Earlier that day, after a particularly rough bout of training, Phainon had casually suggested they play a game of strip poker. Mydei had only raised an eyebrow—strip poker, really?—assuming it was only one of Phainon’s usual throwaway remarks. But later, when Phainon led him into an out-of-the-way courtyard and pulled out a fresh, unopened deck of cards from his coat, Mydei realized he wasn’t joking.
“C’mon, you’re not chickening out, are you?” Phainon had teased.
“Shut it,” Mydei muttered. “You use that line way too often.”
“Only ‘cuz it works,” Phainon replied brightly, already cracking the seal and clumsily shuffling the cards.
