Chapter 1: The Beginning

Chapter Text

No sooner after the hellish Entrance Exams ended, we began to live a life full of leisure. No more books, no more classes.

Except one thing.

Kaburagi has been acting suspicious. By that I mean very, very suspicious.

Several days after we finished our Entrance Exams, Kaburagi called me out to the usual conference room.

His expression was serious.

Scary.

This is one of the times I’m happy with Enjou’s presence.

“Oh, before I forgot. Enjou-sama.” I turned towards him and bowed down. “Congratulations on your engagement.”

Surprisingly a few days ago, we received the news of Enjou and Yuiko-san’s engagement. According to mother, while there were several gossips about their relationship before among her circle of friends, this was the first time the families of both parties let out an official announcement.

Due to that, my least favorite kouhai the Bird Brain Katsuragi seemed oddly proud whenever we passed by each other. Well, the first few times he did sent a few sarcastic words my way but after a few…uh,  accidents, I supposed he learnt his lessons.

Usually I’ll do it when no one was around but as his behavior was getting irritating, my reflex was almost automatic. It was beyond my control.

Truly.

Let’s say that rather than being the reliable witnesses that they are, Iwamuro-kun, Class rep, Satomi-kun and Akizawa-kun chose the dark path and covered all the evidence of my wrongdoing.

The Bird-Brain’s dumbfounded expression was fun to watch.

Not to mention Serika-chan and the others also were more than happy to punch the hell out of him before I could say a word.

Oh well.

What wonderful accomp- I mean, friends they are~

Speaking of which, there’s one time after I saw that Bird Brain off did Fellow Stalking Horse approached from behind, saying “At least don’t do it in such a public place.” Despite that, I knew that my reputation as the elegant Kisshouin Reika needed to be maintained so I simply smiled in response.

Anyway, back to Enjou. Was it just me or smile seemed a bit…odd? Eeeeeek, there it was! That archaic smile!

“…Thank you, Kisshouin-san.”

If you’re grateful, would you mind dropping that smile off? Scary.

As the main perpetrator behind this entire gathering was still silent, Enjou and I began chatting about trivial things like the exams, the faculty we’re aiming and such. Basically most of it was about our future plans as a college student.

“I’ve decided.”

“Hm?”

“Huh?”

Enjou and I immediately turned towards Kaburagi who suddenly stood up with a determined expression on his face.

On what exactly? I raised my eyebrows in confusion, but that damned Kaburagi was quiet after all that announcement.

“Um, what might you be speaking of, Kaburagi-sama?” I asked back after a while. Don’t just act cool with your hands on your back like that!

“Confession. To Takamichi. I’ll do it.”

“…Confession? You, Kaburagi-sama!?”

What’s this all of a sudden!? This idiot disciple of mine…? A confession!?

“Since when did you become so bold, Masaya?” Enjou, who apparently thought the same thing, blurted the question.

“I’ve been thinking about it for a while now. The Entrance Exams is over. Our remaining times as teenagers too is almost over. After the announcement of Shuusuke’s engagement, I don’t think there’s much time before mother make her move. That’s why…I’ll make it clear to her. About my feelings.”

He lifted his head and looked at us with a serious gaze.

I averted my eyes in hurry. Enjou apparently did the same thing. The intensity of it all tells a lot.

 Kaburagi is determined.

Nothing we said right now could sway him from this decision.

“…Well, if you’re sure about this Masaya…I won’t stop you. But how are you going to confess?”

“…”

The last time I asked him this question, I believe this idiot decided on some extreme method, didn’t he? Buying enough roses to cover Wakaba-chan’s entire house, or a plane to make a confession from the sky.

And the handmade rings…Let’s forget about that.

“Renting my family’s-“

“Vetoed.” I interrupted swiftly, earning myself a glare from His Majesty the Emperor. Sorry, Wakaba-chan’s future is more important than my fear towards you. After all that you said, you’ll go to your usual methods?

Fat chance!

Don’t waste my feelings like that! I thought you’ve become more mature!

In the end, Enjou and I managed to convince him to do the basic confession without unnecessary extra gestures. Kaburagi went home immediately after we finished the discussion, preparing himself for tomorrow.

Both of us watched silently as the door closed.

“…”

“…”

Now that Kaburagi’s gone, it’s time for us to have our own discussion.

“Enjou-sama…”

“Don’t worry. I’ll prepare myself as well.”

“…It’s still winter.”

“…Then I’ll have a sleepover at Kaburagi Estate this week.”

“Incidentally, if thing’s still not going well, I suggest…”

“No, Kisshouin-san. Just…no.”

Tsk. What’s with that expression on your face? Make sure you handle him properly then, this time. Just so you know, I won’t allow myself to be a pathetic reject the second time!

I won’t allow myself to be cursed again!

Just as I’m about to exit the room, Enjou’s voice rang from behind. He was still sitting, his back leaning against the couch.

“I’m kind of jealous of Masaya.”

“Huh? Why?”

“That guy, despite being the way he is, I admire that recklessness. At the very least, he’s straightforward with his feelings without caring about anything else,” said Enjou with a small smile. “Compared to him, I’m basically a coward.”

“Enjou-sama…?”

“I waited all this time…without taking care of the trouble from my side. Following the elders wish…Burdening myself. That was a mistake.” He looked up in thought, murmuring those words.

I’m not sure if he’s even talking to me right now.

***

Despite leaving early for his so called ‘preparation’, the next day Kaburagi was clearly nervous. Just this morning I saw him accidentally bumping into several people on his way to class.

His eyes were bloodshot.

What the heck did he do last night? Don’t tell me- Reading poetry books again!?

“Did you see Kaburagi-sama this morning? He was so dreamy~”

“I know right! The way he apologized after bumping into others is so cool!”

“Wait. Aren’t you the one who stood in front of him on purpose just for that?”

“Goodness, of course not, Rune-chan. It was absolutely incidental!”

Apparently the topic of Kaburagi occurred even in my group of friends. Aren’t we supposed to discuss about our trip? I mean, who cares about that idiot…! Can’t we talk about something else? Any other talks that doesn’t involve praising Kaburagi?

“Maybe he was haunted by the spirit of-“

Not that kind of discussion please, Fuyuko-sama.

As time went by, Kaburagi had gotten himself into a lot of accidents. Bumping into other students in the hallway almost fifteen times, almost entering the female washroom once, falling down on an empty path five times, almost slipping down the stairs two times.

The spectating students become one with the wall, staring at anything but the Emperor.

I shook my head while standing far, far away from said person.

What did you say? Enjou’s been looking at me for a while now? Goodness, you must have been mistaken. He was simply looking around in worry for his dear friend.

Yes, yes, that must be it.

Oh, look at the time! We must make haste, before the dessert sold out!

I make it a point to not stare at the crime scene over there.

It was of course, until I saw him once again, right in front of the female washroom. He even has the gall to look surprised seeing me here.

“Huh, Kisshouin? What are you doing here?”

What am I doing here!? WHAT AM I DOING HERE!!? THIS IS THE FEMALE WASHROOM!

“Forgive me Kaburagi-sama , for what I’m going to do.”

“Huh? Oi, why are you pushing me? Ouch, it hurts! Kisshouin!”

I forcefully pushed him away before any more witness arrive. Before I go, I gave my fellow female juniors a kind smile to reassure them that this idiot won’t do this kind of thing ever again.

Being the Emperor of Zuiran and the former President of Pivoine, Kaburagi won’t get into much trouble, especially when it was another accident.

But there’s still the risk of him damaging his perfect reputation. As a fellow Pivoine, I couldn’t allow that.

I brought him to the same conference room, the one we used as our base for the entire year. I leaned against the door with my arms crossed.

Being dropped off on the cold floor suddenly without warning, Kaburagi eyed me with a glare.

“…What?”

“Kaburagi-sama, do you realise what you have done this entire day? What kind of visage you display towards the rest of the Zuiran population in less than 10 hours?” I continued on by listing all the incidents he almost involved with, including the recent one.

I made sure to highlight the fact that he did it twice, scaring all the juniors inside it.

His eyes shot wide at the revelation.

“Kaburagi-sama, I understand that you are nervous, as this being the first time you ever did any kind of confession,” I said, ignoring the “Oi!” from a certain person. “However, your behaviour is unacceptable. You planned on confessing your feelings today, did you not?”

I eyed the forlorn male before me and sighed.

“Let’s forget about the other things for now. The washroom incident, you did it twice. What if Enjou-sama didn’t stop you the first time around? What if somebody other than me opening the door a while ago? What if it was Takamichi-san? What will you do? Do you want Takamichi-san to brand you as a pervert? Right before your confession?”

“…No, of course I don’t want that.”

“Then stop moping around and act like your usual self. Everyone did a confession at some point in their life. It was just another phase of life,” I said, parroting what Ririna told me months ago.

Well, maybe I did change the content a little. Just a bit.

Kaburagi dipped his head in shame as he listened to my every word. He nodded every so often while muttering something.

For some reason, he shoved me a notebook, containing his script for the eventual confession. He asked for my pointers and what other things could he do to improve it.

The script itself was five pages worth. With two of them containing what can he do and provide for her.

“…”

I immediately crossed those with the red pen he gave me, ignoring the shocked expression from His Majesty the Emperor.

***

When he said confession, I expect it to be during their so called ‘dates’, away from the whole Zuiran population.

Apparently I was wrong.

After being lectured, Kaburagi decided to add one more day before he finally confess to Wakaba-chan. His excuse in the mail was that he’s not ready, and having to do a confession following his pathetic behavior that day was too much for him to bear.

If Kaburagi was smart enough, then he would definitely choose anywhere but Zuiran as his place of confession. Or maybe do that after everyone else have gone home.

…But that idiot chose to do that in an easy to spot place, the one that have a huge chance of people passing by. And he, of all time, called Wakaba-chan early in the morning to do that.

By chance, I too decided to arrive early to school that day. I definitely didn’t expect to hear those two familiar voices on my way to class. And after peeking secretly from my spot, I saw them.

They were chatting at first, before Kaburagi brought out a familiar notebook and began to read.

Right in front of Wakaba -chan.

Idiot! Who on earth- Who the heck would do a confession like this!?

Are you having a speech!?

KABURAGI!!!

Then,

“Kisshouin?”

I flinched and slowly turned around.

Standing not far behind me, was Fellow Stalking Horse, or better known as the second lead for the manga ‘You are my dolce’.

The one who chased for Wakaba-chan’s heart.

Mizusaki Arima, the former Student Council President.

.

.

.

.

.

But what’s he doing here!?

Right at this moment…!

Just as Kaburagi’s about to confess!

“O-Ohohoho. What might you be doing here for, Fe- I mean, Mizusaki-kun?”

Urgh, meeting his eyes was tough. I couldn’t even-! No, no, no, no! Don’t look at the right!

Act natural. Act natural, Reika! You’re an actress, an actress!

Eeeep! He looked even more suspicious!

Come to think of it, Fellow Stalking Horse has always been an early riser, isn’t he…It was perfectly normal for him to arrive around this time.

With his arms crossed, Fellow Stalking horse stepped closer to where I stood, eyes glancing over my shoulder.

“I should ask you the same question. What exactly are you doing here? Eavesdropping?”

…I don’t know what you’re talking about…? “Um, I’m simply on an early morning stroll, as you can see.” I tried without looking at him.

“…An early morning stroll huh…”

Do you really have to look that doubtful, comrade? I mean, I know that I have yet to move from this spot, but can’t you just take my words as the truth?

“I’m not sure if you know this, but you’re acting weird. Even more so than normal.”

“Hey! What’s that supposed to mean!?”

Even more so than normal!? What, is he saying I’m a weird person to begin with? How rude!

…I know my lie was not that believable but hey, could you please stop peeking from there, comrade? My height couldn’t possibly match yours you see? It’s hard enough to tiptoe myself, much less blocking you left and right like this.

Earlier you were judging me for eavesdropping, but do you even realize that you’re basically did the same thing, Fellow Stalking Horse?

Kaburagiiiiii, when will your confession end!!!!?

Do you know what kind of trouble I am in right now!!!!?

I tried to distract Fellow Stalking Horse with useless chatters but he didn’t buy it.

“Anyway, I need to go to the Student Council room now so..” said Fellow Stalking Horse as he proceed to go to the direction opposite from where we came from.

Where Kaburagi and Wakaba-chan’s at.

But if he went there, and they meet each other, what would happen?

Another drama!?

Worse, what’ll happen to Kaburagi? Another trip!?

Eeeeeeeek!! That’s not the script! Not at all! Why the manga didn’t have this much trouble!?

“Do-Don’t go, Mizusaki-kun!”

“Wha-? Kisshouin!?”

In desperation, I clang onto Fellow Stalking Horse from behind, wrapping my arms around his chest as an effort to stop him. Just in case, I wrapped my legs around his as well, successfully locking him in place.

No! It’s only less than two months before graduation! I couldn’t-! I wouldn’t allow this to happen!

I know you’re the better man Fellow Stalking Horse but-! Please! At least, let Kaburagi hear Wakaba-chan’s answer!

Without any interruption!

I’m begging you! Fellow Stalking Horse!!!

Then,

“That’s why I…! I like you! As a friend, and as a woman!”

It was Kaburagi’s voice.

I froze, and I could feel Fellow Stalking Horse did the same.

“…”

“…”

Both of us were loss at words.

I tried climbing up and peeked on his face from my position to no avail. As his legs now free, Fellow Stalking Horse immediately make a detour towards another location.

Silence reigned for a while, until he opened his mouth.

“I understand. I won’t go there anymore. Just, let go first Kisshouin.”

It was curt and short. I’m not sure what kind of emotion that he displayed at this moment but.

I couldn’t help feeling guilty.

I mean, Fellow Stalking Horse was the second male lead in ‘You Are My Dolce’.

It’s kind of sad when he was rejected by Wakaba-chan in the manga.

But to think it happened before my very own eyes…!

“Mi-Mizusaki-kun, just now…I mean, the thing with Kaburagi-sama…” I stammered.

I looked down on the floor as I spoke due to guilt, until I felt a hand patting my head gently.

“…Why are you making that expression for?” said Fellow Stalking Horse as he chuckled. “Even if it’s those two, it’s wrong to eavesdrop on other people’s confession. Don’t worry, I won’t say anything. Anyway, it’s better if we left them alone, don’t you think?”

With that, Fellow Stalking Horse escorted me back to class, and left soon after.

As it’s still early, only my fellow rep, Satomi-kun has arrived.

“Satomi-kun…”

“Eh?! Kisshouin-san?!”

.

.

.

“Huh? Kisshouin? What are you doing here?”

I looked up to see Fellow Stalking Horse, who just exited the Student Council room. The surprise in his eyes was so obvious from where I stood.

A Pivoine standing in front of the Student Council…

I could even see the sight of the new president standing abruptly before the door was closed.

Ririna was right. Whoever got chosen as the new president is a small fry. Fellow Stalking Horse’s dream to connect all the students was still a long way to go it seems.

Unaware of the fact that I’m gossiping needlessly about his successor, Fellow Stalking Horse slowly approached me.

“What are you doing here, Kisshouin?”

“Gokigen’you, Mizusaki-kun.”

“Good morning…?”

Anyway, I first lure him with a small chat about this and that before getting to the main point.

“Incidentally, Mizusaki-kun, do you still have any leftover work to do?”

“…Not really. Why?”

In front of Fellow Stalking Horse who regarded me warily, a sweet smile slowly making its way to my face.

“So Mizusaki-kun, what do you think about playing truant for a day?”

***

To be honest, it’s quite easy to get out of the school. I think we were given a leeway, being the final year students and all. As long as we ignore the suggestive smiles on the guards’ faces, I suppose everything went well.

The hardest obstacle was actually the first part – convincing Fellow Stalking Horse to come.

It’s easier than I thought.

Just adding a bit of blackm- no, charm and wit, he finally gave up and let me do as I wish.

It’s not like I took a few hostages to persuade him.

It’s really not.

Anyway, as it’s only a day trip, we couldn’t possibly go too far from Tokyo. Hence, I decided to choose our destination on the spot as we browse the map at the station.

A well-known tourist destination - Akihabara, the famous ‘electric town’.

As the objective of this trip was to mend Fellow Stalking Horse’s broken heart, we started our journey by visiting the Game Corner. Being the model student that I am, it’s reasonable to say that I’ve never even step foot here. Even in my past life, the number of times I’ve been here was scarce.

What’s surprising was the fact that Fellow Stalking Horse seemed quite familiar with it. When I asked, he said, “I went with my friends several times during the holiday.”

What’s more unforgivable was his most recent visit to the arcade was with Tomoe-senpai! Without even asking me!

How could you!?

Aren’t we supposed to be fellow stalking horses!?

“Kisshouin. Are you pouting?”

I’M NOT!

I left Fellow Stalking Horse in the dust, leaving him puzzled before going to exchange my coins. To think I was betrayed like this! By most trusted vice-chief too!

“Oi. Are you angry?”

“Whatever you’re talking about, Mizusaki-kun? Angry? Me?” I let out a giggle, and turned my head from facing him, and again when he came to my left. I heard him sigh as he looked on. Hmph!

Oh, that claw machine over there… Isn’t that…!

Tarow the Taro! It’s huge!

Wow! I thought only certain places actually sell its merchandise. I should tell Aoi-chan about this!

Speaking of which, now that I look at it up close, I noticed that compared to the other claw machines which had other dolls inside, this one seemed untouched.

Do-Don’t tell me…! It’s too unpopular that no one wanted it!?

Impossible!

I immediately went in front of the machine and try my luck.  Unfortunately, even after my sixth attempt, I remained unsuccessful. Uwahhh…

No choice. I need to use my trump card.

“Mizusaki-kun…”

“…What.”

I silently gestured to the claw machine with my head, using the same move I used against Onii-sama. I pulled his sleeve and looked up. You’ll help me, right? You won’t deny your comrade’s pure wish like this, right?

My attempt was successful.

Since he helped me with this personal mission of mine, it won’t do if I continued this cold war any longer. So like a good friend, I immediately burst out and told him my thought as he started the challenge.

“I mean, how could no one was interested in it? He’s a-do-ra-ble! An extra with that kind of pitiful face, that’s supposed to be its charm!”

“…This guy? Really?”

“Or could it be that they’re so popular that they sold out quickly?”

“…I’m pretty sure it’s the same batch from eight months ago…”

“Hmm, did you say something, Mizusaki-kun?” Since the atmosphere was a bit noisy, Fellow Stalking Horse’s voice went passed my ears. Could you speak more clearly, comrade?

“Nah, nothing.”

Fellow Stalking Horse was successful on his first try, as he brought me the biggest Tarow from the machine. Filled with gratitude, in the end I decided to come clean with him.

“…That’s why Mizusaki-kun, the next time you went out to see Tomoe-senpai, make sure to bring up my name as well. It’s not fair that you hog Tomoe-senpai all by yourself.”

“…Hog? And how am I supposed to do that?”

Just act casually. For example, if Tomoe-senpai ask you to hang out with him, say things like “It’ll get boring just with the two of us. How about asking Kisshouin to join us” or something like that.

What’s up with that ambivalent gaze, comrade?

Anyway, now that the misunderstanding has been cleared up, we enjoyed the rest of our time there. Fellow Stalking Horse seemed to like the fighting game though. And he’s winning.

I could see his opponents wailing as their characters’ hp went down to zero. Not to mention a few of them sent a few glares our way.

Scary.

“Mizusaki-kun, Mizusaki-kun. How about this game?” I pointed out to the machine in the corner.

“Huh? The Cho Chabudai Gaeshi!?”

Yes, yes. Aren’t you angry at Kaburagi right now for taking the one you like? This is perfect to relieve your stress!

Let’s not tarry any longer. Why’re you hesitating? Is it because I’m here? Don’t worry! I truly don’t mind!

Despite my kind intention to help him release his stress, Fellow Stalking Horse seemed like he was forced more than anything. Was it not enough for him?

Oooooh, that one, the punching game! That might work! Let’s go, Fellow Stalking Horse!

Since Fellow Stalking Horse appeared tired after all the games, I decided to finally take lead in this one.

As I wait for it to start, my mind began to wander.

Kaburagi and Enjou, they’re definitely the most popular guys here in Zuiran. With girls who followed every of their beck and call, if they wanted a girlfriend or something like that, they simply just had to choose.

It was easy.

I’m not the manga Kisshouin Reika, so I honestly don’t mind that much. They could build an entire harem for all I care.

But…!

What I’m having problems with, were the fact that I’m living in a very different world from them! Despite me being a Pivoine!

Far from having a boyfriend, I didn’t even have any admires! While girls blushing at the sight of the two, I was feared! Some of them even ran away as if I’m the vengeful banshee that chase after them!

For example, that Kenmari Dainagon!

Wu Zetian!? Kali!?

Punch.

Go to hell! What’s the difference between me and the other girls!? Even that Tsuruhana changes her boyfriend every single year! And everyone knows how rotten her personality is!

When I ask several people about it, they said I was a flower beyond reach. But what about those two!? If I lived in a different planet, then they should be living in a different universe!

And now, to think that both of them already had their significant other. Enjou with Yuiko-san, while Kaburagi with Wakaba-chan.

But what about Reika!?

Where the hell is my prince!?

It’s useless for me to deny the reality any longer.

I truly am unpopular among the boys. This is painful. No boyfriend, only male friends.

I mean, it’s not that I’m ungrateful or anything like that. Akizawa-kun, Satomi-kun, Class rep, Iwamuro-kun, even Minami-kun!

I’m truly happy for all their support.

But why can’t at least one of them stay in the Forever Alone Village!? Being happy all on their own, while I wither in agony…

All these times I live as someone’s Love Guru…taking on numerous disciples, and with the latest, most troublesome one more or less already done with the application form to enter the gate of Fulfilling Romance Village…

Isn’t this too unfair!??

He’s supposed to be the most clueless one of us three, and he actually managed to beat me in this race!?

Punch.

GAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!

And Enjou!!!

As if I didn’t suffer enough in school, he and Yuiko-san actually dare to waltz through every single party I was in and being lovey-dovey, all “Shuu” and “Yuiko” while linking arms!! And he also has the gall to be “Oh, there you are Kisshouin-san. I’ve been looking for you…” when I obviously was so disgusted that I avoided them on purpose!

What the hell!!?

And Yuiko-san has been staring at me wordlessly with a smile on her face, surrounded by guys saying whispers of love.

Just for that, I rejected all the invitation to the parties I knew they’ll be in and spent my time with Umewaka-kun and the others.

Punch.

After Kaburagi make his relationship with Wakaba-chan know publicly, would there be any bad rumors about me? About being unwanted…

Uwaaaaah, I don’t want that…

Then even guys from upper class wouldn’t want me as their bride.

What would happen then!? Living on my own, with Okaa-sama and Tanuki, while Onii-sama already with his third child…

Will I be called aunt Reika for the rest of my life!?

I came back to my sense as a hand was placed on my shoulder. Huh? Fellow Stalking Horse? And…

There are a few others, a group of high schoolers like us, watching. But why!? What’re they watching…Oh.

Oh.

What displayed in front of me was my score.

“Wow…she actually broke it…”

“Unbelievable, the highest score…”

“Amazing. She’s stronger than you, Takashi! And to think you’re even the president of the karate club!”

For some reason one of them came up to Fellow Stalking Horse and said,

“You better come clean if you had done anything wrong. That girl is not to be messed with.”

“Yeah dude. Are you sure you didn’t do anything to make her angry? Wouldn’t want that face to be destroyed now, do you?”

The guy called Takashi, a burly male similar to Iwamuro-kun came up to me. With that kind of yakuza-like face, he looked at me with worshipping eyes.

That looked eerily familiar somehow. And Fellow Stalking Horse…

“…Kisshouin. It’s been bothering me for a while but, are you that stressed out?”

Anyhow, the guys were bothering us so much that we couldn’t stay much longer. They were kind, but a little annoying. Fellow Stalking Horse also said,

“Your believers in Zuiran are troublesome enough…” and he apparently didn’t want me to collect others outside of Zuiran as well.

As if!

What unfounded rumors!

Kaburagi, Enjou, and now Fellow Stalking Horse! Why are these top three of Zuiran spreading rumors about me like there’s no tomorrow!?

About me collecting Chinese Zodiacs! Being a father-con! And having believers!

Why couldn’t they spread rumors about Tsuruhana for a change!?

WHY MUST IT HAD TO BE REIKA!?

.

.

.

Incidentally, it was also time for lunch.

***

Akihabara was quite famous among tourists. For those otaku who love anime and manga, it’s a perfect spot. Among locals, their electronics are a lot cheaper than other places, so they too frequented to this place. And Akihabara too was famous for their…

Maid Café.

I’ve never experienced a maid café before. Both in my past life as well as my current life. Despite the Kisshouin family having their own maids at home, that didn’t mean I’m not curious about it. Anyway, I dragged Fellow Stalking Horse to the most popular Maid Café here at Akihabara.

“Huh? Why Maid Café?” It’s because I’m curious!

The moment we entered, we were greeted by the sight of maids welcoming us with a smile. They even gave both of us a bunny shaped ears as we sat down. The café itself seemed to be popular with males, so I don’t really think Fellow Stalking Horse looked odd here. For some reason I could feel many stares upon our table. Both from the customers and the maids.

As a few among the maids were blushing, it’s probably due to Fellow Stalking Horse’s face. And as for the male customers, I’d like to believe it’s my rococo styled hair that caught their attention. Ah, there’s the menu.

“What would you like, Mizusaki-kun?”

Hmmm, compared to the ones I used to, it didn’t have that much option but…!

An omurice! A commoner’s omurice! I’ll have that!

Apparently Fellow Stalking Horse was hungry, so he chose the Katsu-curry.

“…And for the drinks, we’ll have the tea, please.” I smiled. Fellow Stalking Horse was still looking at the menu. Are you not done yet?

To my shock, he ordered a strawberry parfait. When the maid offered the combo deals, with a special photoshoot session with the maid, he asked for my opinion. Why!? But having a picture would be a good memory so I agree.

“I’m surprised you even asked me about it, Mizusaki-kun.”

“I’m not interested in that, so it’s your choice, Kisshouin.”

Ehhh!? You didn’t want to join us? But it’s your heartbreak journey! The maid also looked cute in their uniform! Wasn’t this a wonderful encounter!?

“What’s wrong?” asked Fellow Stalking Horse when I sighed longingly, staring at the maids.

“I wonder if I could wear that too.” If the Kisshouin family fall, should I get a job as a maid here? It looked fun.

“That uniform you mean? Probably not.” Hey! What. Are you saying that I won’t be as cute as them while wearing one!? What's with that expression? You're imagining it, didn't you!? And even shaking your head too...!

Fellow Stalking Horse!

“Ah. Didn’t you wear a butler suit once during the School Festival?”

“…I did. My classmates insisted on that.” Satomi-kun most of all. That sheep ears, it’s all his idea.

That reminds me!

“Why couldn’t I remember you visiting us at all during the School Festival, Mizusaki-kun?” I accused, leaning forward. Are you ignoring my class because of me? I thought we’re friends! Even Tomoe-senpai visited me during his final year! Enjou and Kaburagi too!

“…Kisshouin. I visited your class every year. But you’re either on a break or busy with other customers.”

Ehhh!? But why didn’t you call for me!? I could have ignored Kaburagi and serve you! Truly!

I gave a sheepish smile in return as he sighed.

“Oh, by the way, Kisshouin. I think you need to check your phone now. It kept vibrating incessantly when I held it earlier.”

…I’ve got a bad feeling about this.

From my experience, there’s only one person who was rude enough to call or mail me without taking a hint.

He definitely wanted to tell me about his confession with Wakaba-chan. I’m sure of it.

Considering how the manga went, I guess it’s safe to say that it worked out. However,

The dignified Kaburagi Masaya in the manga was a whole lot different from this laughingstock right here so I’m still unsure. Should I take a look at the mail?

But…

As if on cue, the phone rang again, and again – without stopping.

What the hell.

Kaburagi, couldn’t you find another person to talk about your feelings? It’s already five minutes! Are you that desperate!?

Enjouuuu! Where the heck did he run off to!?

Take this troublesome menace with you!!

“…Are you sure you didn’t want to answer that?”

“O-hohoho. Pay no heeds of it, Mizusaki-kun. I’m sure it’s just some chain messages or some sort.” From a high-schooler with the heart of stalker, more-like.

He’ll give up sooner or later.

See?

I wasted no time before putting Kaburagi and just in case, Enjou in my blacklist. Hopefully he won’t be that pushy and used other people’s phone. I should be able to read those messages peacefully right now.

Huh!?

I thought it was only Kaburagi, but apparently the rest of my friends too had mailed me. What happened?

‘Kisshouin. My confession, she accepted it! We’ll be going to see the winter illumination this weekend! Where do you think is the best spot?’

‘What should I do!? She even kissed my cheek before leaving!’

‘Come to our usual meeting place. I’ve got a lot of thing to talk about my next date.’

‘Are you there yet?’

‘Kisshouin! Where are you!? It’s been half an hour already. How much longer do you want me to wait!?’

‘Oi! Shuusuke told me you’re not in your classroom. Your friends also said they never see you. Where did you go!?

Hmm…To conclude, all Kaburagi’s messages indicate that his confession was accepted, as he later wanted to ask me about the perfect date spot for commoners.

And urgh… A kiss on the cheek?

So you’re saying it was Wakaba-chan who took the initiative? And what did you do, Kaburagi!? Standing there blushing while holding your cheek!?

As for the rest,

‘Reika-sama! At the cafeteria earlier, Kaburagi-sama and Takamichi-san were holding hands!’

‘What should we do, Reika-sama!? Kaburagi-sama just declared that he and Takamichi-san were dating!’

‘Kisshouin-san, it seems like Takamichi-san has accepted Masaya’s confession. And Masaya told me that you were ignoring all his messages. Where are you?’

‘Reika-san! What’s this about Kaburagi-sama and that girl!? Where are you!!?’

‘Kisshouin-san, where did you and Mizusaki run off to? It’s chaos right now!’

‘Reika-sama? I heard you were sick? Was it serious!? About Takamichi-san and Kaburagi-sama…Reika-sama, how about we go somewhere? A trip with the rest of the handicrafts club…I’m sure things will be just fine after that.’

‘Kisshouin-san. Kaburagi-kun just confessed to me this morning…and I accepted it’.

That one was from Wakaba-chan.

And the others…were sending me condolence messages. What’s this about me being heartbroken!? Who!? Stop with the misconception already!

“By the way, Mizusaki-kun…Have you checked your phone?”

“Huh? No, I forgot to charge it yesterday. Why?”

“Uh…nothing, nothing.”

So he’s not aware of it yet. So am I supposed to be doing the explaining? Uwahh, I don’t want to. I make sure to carefully avoided making eye contact with the guy sitting opposite me.

The food has arrived. Apparently, to make the meal more delicious, you need to chant a few phrases with some cutesy gestures. Fellow Stalking Horse refused to though. So I did it for his meal as well.

It’s kind of fun though. For some reason, Fellow Stalking Horse looked away right after I finished. The tip of his ears were red.

Anyway, the maid also drew love on my omurice. It tasted just like the one in my previous life. Yum~

After the meal, the same maid came with the parfait Fellow Stalking Horse ordered. Ooooh, it looked quite good. For some reason Fellow Stalking Horse placed the strawberry parfait in front of me. Huh?

“Well, aren’t you in a bad mood?”

Eh? So it was for me!? Was it because my action in the arcade? You still remember such a flimsy thing?

…Fellow Stalking Horse!

I was wrong. You truly are the best of them all. More than Enjou, even more so than that damn Kaburagi. You are truly a prince among the cow dungs.

I wanted to cry…

I’ll definitely pray for your successful love life, vice chief!

Fear not! This is simply a mere obstacle in life!

Look at me and Tomoe-senpai! It didn’t hurt that much after a while! It only took a few tears…a week of crying…erasing all those fun memories…Watching as the love of your life smiling happily at his lover…

No, no!

Anyway, I’ll support you! You’ll definitely persevere, comrade!

As a thanks for your generosity, please, have some of this parfait! No need to be shy! Here, I’ll feed you.

"...No, I don't need it..."

"Goodness, there's no need to be shy, Mizusaki-kun. Here!"

"..."

“How is it?”

“…It’s quite good. Better than expected.” Oh, really? Then I’ll have some too.

“Kisshouin, that spoon…”

Huh? What’s wrong, buddy?

Wow, he’s right! The taste of the fresh strawberry truly is delightful. Sweet~

What are you looking at? Is there something on my face? Or…could it be you want another? Huh? No? Alright then.

We ended our meal with a photography session with the maid of our choosing. Initially, Fellow Stalking Horse wanted to just stand in the corner and watch, but since this is our memory together, I pulled him beside me and smiled at the camera.

The picture in the end was pretty. The maid even wrote a little message on the bottom.

I asked for two copies, for both myself and Fellow Stalking Horse.

***

Thinking about Kaburagi’s messages earlier, my guilt towards my vice-chief skyrocketed to the extreme. The scene of him coming to his home, and opening the mails from others. Uwahhh… Just imagining such a sight broke my heart already…

What should I do?

It’s not like I could just tell him to forget about Wakaba-chan right away. The manga Mizusaki Arima, I only saw him smiling sadly at their backs without another word…And to think such a cool person broke down while a few tears trailing down from his eyes…

I COULDN’T JUST IGNORE IT!

Akihabara, Akihabara. What else is here? Maid Café, electronics, games, cosplays, anime and…! That’s it!

“Mizusaki-kun, let’s go to the Manga Café! You read those, didn’t you, Mizusaki-kun?”

“Manga? Yeah, sort of.”

Boys his age probably went for the shounen manga. Things like adventure, friendship and stuff. Hmm…I’ve read several of them in my previous life but…!

That’s not my objective.

Let me show you Fellow Stalking Horse.

The world of shoujo romance!

.

.

.

While Manga Café was relatively common in Japan, the one we went to has a more classical kind of atmosphere. It somehow felt like we were transported into another world. A magical world, with the serene sound of music played the moment we entered, to the aesthetical design of the café itself.

Thankfully I did my research first before going.

Anyway, we were given a briefing regarding the service that was offered. An option between usage of café only or an additional private room. As I believe a lot of time was needed for fellow Stalking Horse to understand the world of romance, I chose the latter.

A key was given for the customers who used the private room.

“Wow, I can’t believe this place actually exist.”

Rightttt!? It’s like a library filled with manga, old and new. Ooooh, that one! The whole series!? I’ve been searching for them for so long! Uwahhhh!

This is heaven!

This one! That one too! I want it all!

“Wait. You’re taking that much books!?”

“What do mean ‘that much’, Mizusaki-kun? I’m not done yet.”

This was barely enough to satisfy me. Not to mention we need to find the books for you as well. Hmmm…manga that centered around the second lead romance…Let me recall my memories back.

As expected, Fellow Stalking Horse immediately went for the shounen section. Boys…

Anyhow, the private room they provided us with, a flat type room is quite cozy to lay on. They also gave us free drinks alongside the room, but I don’t think that’s possible for now. It would be bad if the drink somehow got spilled here now, wouldn’t it…

It’s soft! Laying down while reading manga is the best!

“…Kisshouin, do you really not notice my presence in this room? Your legs… you do realize that you’re currently wearing a skirt now, do you?”

“Oh my, sorry Mizusaki-kun.” I suppose my daily sessions of yoga caused me to do it just as I’m laying down. Huh?

“Take this to cover your legs,” exclaimed Fellow Stalking Horse as he laid his blazer on me.

Goodness, does it bother him that much?

I patted the space next to me. You can lie down as well, comrade. What, no? You don’t want to?

Fellow Stalking Horse opted to lean against the wall it seems. There were about five books next to him. Unlike me, who hoarded fifteen at once. I also handed him three extra shoujo manga which he took after a while.

“Why are you giving me this?”

Of course it’s to help you, comrade!

“That’s why Mizusaki-kun. You shouldn’t give up because your heart’s been broken once.”

As they say, there’s a lot of fish in the sea. With your looks, I’m sure you’ll get someone in no time!

As we read, the conversation between us flows naturally.

“Have you ever read a romance manga, Mizusaki-kun?”

“No, I’m not interested in that kind of things.”

Ehhhhh…Even though you’re the second lead in the manga?

“What’s with that expression? Is it that surprising? I don’t think any of my friends actually interested in it.”

Oh really?

Hmmm… Oniisama likes travel magazines, not romance so that’s reasonable. I’m not sure about Imari-sama though. What kind of stuff did he read for him to be the Casanova Village Chief, I wonder? But his fellow villager, Enjou Shuusuke described romance as something to experience, not to be watched.

No wonder our villages still couldn’t coexist until now.

For me, who engulfed myself with romance in books and dramas, as well as Fellow Stalking Horse who’s never even interested in it..

Lucky them, being surrounded by girls, going on a date with their significant other while the Forever Alone Villagers spending their free time reading manga. Hmph!

Speaking of which, that Kaburagi. Didn’t he like all this romantic stuff? Traditional romance, according to Enjou. But even with all those knowledge, he still couldn’t woo a woman properly.

Handmade necklace?

Covering her house with roses?

Tsk.

I wonder what’ll happen to him if Enjou and I didn’t interfere. It must’ve been a lot more pathetic than it currently was, his pursuit I mean.

But still, even with all that regressing qualities, he actually managed to get a girlfriend before I do.

Why!?

I immediately sat up and turned to my vice chief. I tugged his sleeve to get his attention and leaned forward.

“Huh? Kisshouin? What is it?” said Fellow Stalking Horse as he held my shoulders.

“Mizusaki-kun, as a man, who do you think is the prettiest girl in Zuiran? How would you rank me?”

“…What brought this up?” He said as he averted his gaze.

Hey, it’s just a question. Why wouldn’t you answer me? Don’t tell me…!

Mizusaki-kun!” I exclaimed before gasping. “Could it be, I’m the ugliest…!?”

Hey, look at me! Am I really!? Am I really that ugly!? Could it be due to my rococo hair? Or...my old-fashioned face!? Answer me, Fellow Stalking Horse!

“Stop shaking me already. You’re pretty, alright!?”

Say that while looking at my face comrade. If you dare looked at your right, it’s over buddy!

“How pretty? Among the girls in Zuiran, what is my rank? Top 10? Top 3?”

“The first, the first! Too close, Kisshouin…”

The first!? Goodness, is that how you see me!? As expected of my vice chief! Now satisfied, I got down from his lap and smiled, returning to my reading.

After 15 minutes,

“So, Mizusaki-kun. If I’m a frog, would you still…”

“I’m begging you, anything but that question.”

Ehhh? Why!?

***

As I flipped the pages and read, Fellow Stalking Horse’s voice rang out.

“By the way, Kisshouin. In these manga you gave me earlier…Do girls really like these type of guys?”

“Huh? What are you talking- Ehhhh, why are you reading that!?” That’s mineeee!

“What do you mean, ‘why’? You gave me this earlier.”

“No, no, no! That’s the wrong one!” I attempted to give him the ones where the second lead get their happy ending as well, not that!

Unlike my recommendation for Fellow Stalking Horse, my own reading list was basically made up of wish-fulfilling fantasies. Not to mention the toxic kind of male lead who was later transformed into a better person by the female protagonist. I mean, it’s either a playboy, a jerk, or a pushy asshole. Incidentally, the second male leads they provided us with are a lot better in terms of personality and chemistry.

It’s kind of similar to ‘You Are My Dolce’.

Kaburagi Masaya, Takamichi Wakaba and Mizusaki Arima.

As for his question earlier… Do you have to glance at me like that, Fellow Stalking Horse..

“Kisshouin, you’re not looking for this kind of guys in reality now, do you?” Asked Fellow Stalking Horse with a worried expression.

“O-Of course not!” As if I would subjected myself to such torture!

I only like reading about it, not experiencing it myself... Imagine how much headache would I get, facing hurdles after hurdles to protect our love. Also, I’m not a masochist…

Just look at how much stress I was under due to Kaburagi alone. Adding more would be detrimental to my beauty.

But if it ever happened in real life, then I would definitely choose the second lead immediately.

Just like…

“…What?”

“No, nothing.”

To Fellow Stalking Horse who was gazing at me strangely, I gave a bright smile.

***

Apparently the manga café was too cozy. The food there was more delicious than I previously thought, and after reading a few more books, sleep came by naturally.

I woke up to see several messages from Oniisama and the driver. Thankfully it’s only been a few minutes, so they shouldn’t be that much worried.

I wonder if Oniisama knew about me skipping school today. He won’t blame me, would he? The Entrance Exams are already over, after all.

I supposed Fellow Stalking Horse too was a bit tired from all his work, seeing as he’s still sleeping next to me.

Thank goodness.

I was afraid that I behave inappropriately while sleeping. Hopefully I’m not drooling or anything like that.

Anyway, Fellow Stalking Horse…

This is the first time I saw him being like this. One of the rare times when his face would look peaceful.

Being the Student Council President, he was surely under a lot of stress, especially when his tenure was filled with troublesome Pivoine Presidents, such as Youko-sama and Kaburagi. Not to mention the aggressiveness of the two was something else. Unfortunately, it was always Wakaba-chan who got the short end of the stick.

And Fellow Stalking Horse, the defender of all Zuiran students too share the same burden, since he’s the person who couldn’t possibly see such injustice happened in front of his eyes. Even with his limited power, he tried to fight.

I truly admire his dedication.

Therefore, a part of me actually rooted for him to get Wakaba-chan’s heart.

But seeing as this world too flow according to the manga, at least when it comes to romance, Fellow Stalking Horse could be considered as pitiful.

…The same also could be said about Kisshouin Reika.

The day of the graduation.

When the time finally arrive,

…Would I truly lose everything?

Chapter 2: The Aftermath

Summary:

SURPRISE!
It's been a while since I updated this story. Heck, it's been a long time. And I'm very sorry about that. For those who waited, thank you very much. A year is quite long, I would say, so for those who's still faithful to this story, this is my present for you. I was supposed to update my other story, Logbook of Zuiran but I was still too exhausted to write another chapter.

Being honest, I've been keeping this draft for a very long time but have yet to gather the courage to post it. I'm not sure about you guys, but I do feel like this chapter is quite lackluster. That said, I'm really liking the in-depth analysis made by several readers of mine from the previous chapter. It did help me a bit in planning the story, so thank you very much! And for the others, you guys made me smile with your comments and support! If you guys wish to make another analysis, then feel free to do so! Even though I'm a bit inactive this year, I must've admit that I love to re-read every comments that you guys wrote. Hopefully I'm not accidentally making her ooc after all this time.

P.S: Reika-sama is being super petty in this chapter hahaha.

That said, enjoy!

Chapter Text

Just a day ago, Zuiran was greeted with a rather shocking news.

Kaburagi Masaya, the one regaled as the undisputable Emperor of Zuiran, and was admired by many has just announced his newfound relationship. And what’s worse, the object of his affection was one of the rare cases of scholarship student here. A commoner, in other words.

Needless to say, the whole school immediately plunged into chaos.

“Reika-sama! Is it really true!?”

“Kaburagi-sama and Takamichi-san are rea-really dating!?”

“Please tell me it was just a dream, Reika-sama!”

.

.

.

…THAT IDIOT!

I told him to confess in a secluded place, away from the rest of the Zuiran populace for a reason! And what did he do!? Waltzing inside a public place such as the cafeteria, and with no warning shouted and I quoted “We’re in a relationship!” to the whole school.

Hasn’t he ever heard of tact!?

What was he planning on doing after that!? Huh!? Expecting all the students would accept it!? Just like that!?

KABURAGIIIIII!

And as if that’s not enough, I, the one who was absent in the midst of it all need to clean up his mess! People kept coming up to me asking whether it was true or not, or if it’s simply a joke made by Kaburagi, or if it’s all a hallucination!

HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW!?

To begin with, I’m not even there! Whatever that idiot did, has absolutely nothing to do with me! Ask Kaburagi himself if you wanted to know that badly! Or Enjou! That pair of best friends surely aware of each other’s secret!

Why would you ask me about it!?

I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING!

Thankfully, a summon from the teacher came just in time, and I immediately pulled Satomi-kun, my fellow rep along.

At least he won’t be bothering me about those things. Not to mention, I need to find more information about this.

“How was it anyhow?”

“Huh? Oh, you mean the scene with Kaburagi-kun?” Satomi-kun immediately told the full story of what happened, before a wry smile making its way to his face.

“The girls went mad right after he left. Tsuruhana’s group especially, I guess they’ll probably create some more problems sooner or later.”

“Hmmm, is that so?” It’s totally impossible for them to do anything to Kaburagi, so their target was definitely Wakaba-chan.

This is why I told him to keep it as a secret at first! And what did he do!?

Just as I’m mulling about how to pummel that idiot disciple of mine to the ground, Satomi-kun’s voice rang out again.

“By the way Kisshouin-san, where did you and Mizusaki went to yesterday? Many people came by to our class, searching for you.”

“Oh, truly?” I was surprised. I don’t remember telling my fellow rep anything about my outing with Fellow Stalking Horse. My eyes immediately narrowed in suspicion, as I asked, “How did you know about that, Satomi-kun?”

Satomi-kun stared blankly at me before grinning. “Ah, I just guessed it. But from your reaction, I suppose it’s true huh, Kisshouin-san?” Then he leaned closer to my face, saying, “Did you guys went on a date or something?”

He, he tricked me!

“Hey!”

“Hahahaha!”

Then,

“Good morning, Kisshouin-san.”

Both of us stiffened and slowly turned around.

It was Enjou, with his usual archaic smile on his face.

And where did he come from!?

Wasn’t this hallway was supposed to be empty!?

“Go-Gokigen you’ Enjou-sama.” I forced a smile. “Whatever are you here for?”

Come to think of it, Kaburagi and Enjou were still on the blacklist, weren’t they? Did they send me other mails after that?

Was that the reason for this dark aura I’m seeing right now?

Eeeeeek, scary!

“Ah, Masaya has been searching for you,” smiled Enjou. To Satomi-kun, he said, “Would you mind if I take her away from you for a moment, Satomi-san?”

“Uh, well…” I immediately tugged on his sleeve and glared. Don’t you dare agree.

“My apologies, Enjou-sama but we were summoned by our homeroom teacher. I believe we need to make haste,” I replied before taking my fellow rep’s hand and make my escape without looking back.

“Ehh? Kisshouin-san!?”

Don’t fall into the devil’s temptation, Satomi-kun! Run!

***

I thought that would be the end of everything.

I was wrong.

Just a few hours later, while I’m hanging around with Serika-chan and the others, Kaburagi and Enjou suddenly came to my class.

“Kyaaa! It’s Kaburagi-sama and Enjou-sama!”

And as usual, the girls all cheered while parting left and right as the two made their way to my table. I really don’t need that kind of consideration…

“Kisshouin! Where the heck did you go!? I mailed and called you so many times since yesterday!”

“Gokigen you’ Kaburagi-sama. Forgive me, but I forgot to charge my phone until this morning.”

“How many times do I have to tell you!? You have a phone for a reason! I need to go personally just to see you!”

I didn’t ask you to come and get me…

“Anyway, let’s go!”

Huh?

“Come along, Kisshouin-san…”

Just like that, with Kaburagi on my left and Enjou on my right, I was forcefully escorted out of the classroom while the rest of the class watched silently. From the corner of my eyes, I saw Satomi-kun clenching his hand while mouthing, ‘Good luck, Kisshouin-san’ on my way out.

You know Satomi-kun, how about helping me get out of this mess for once?

I’m not joking, you know. Rather than moral support, I would appreciate it if you just save me now…

We are fellow reps, aren’t we? What about our friendship? Why are you shaking your head for!?

You’re leaving me just like this!?

SATOMI-KUNNNN!!

***

Unsurprisingly, my idiot disciple immediately shifted the conversation to Wakaba-chan the moment we entered the room.

The smile on his face was kind of irritating to be honest.

And why the hell are you blushing for!?

That’s just a kiss on the cheek, you know! On the cheek!

Enjou, stop laughing already! How about calming down that best friend of yours for once!?

Urgh. With these unfiltered reactions, I started to wonder what the heck did those two consider me as…

“…So, do you know any good place, Kisshouin?”

“…Huh?”

Kaburagi crossed his arms in irritation.

“…For the winter illumination. Did you not hear me just now?”

Ah, that. I also seem to remember him texting me about it at the Maid Café.

But still, winter illumination, huh.

A magical place which is a must for couples to visit for a phenomenal, romantic night.

If you’re honeymooning in Japan, or a couple who’s planning on going to a romantic trip at this time of year, these illuminations are highly, highly recommended.

Kasumi-sama had once told me about her first winter illumination with Tomoe-senpai before.

As for the rest of my friends…

Sakura-chan went to one with Akizawa-kun. Aoi-chan with her boyfriend. Moriyama-san with hers. Satomi-kun with his girlfriend. And of course, Tomoe senpai with Kasumi-sama.

Even…Even Umewaka-kun went to one with Bea-tan!

How wonderful, to see one with someone you love.

For a high school couple, it’s a must. Even if you only have a dog for a partner.

KEEEEEEEEEEEEH!

And to think that idiot Kaburagi actually manage to go on one before me!

What the hell!?

How unfair is this!?

That guy already has everything! Looks, wealth, intelligence, popularity! And now a nice, wonderful girlfriend like Wakaba-chan!

Brain filled with useless, foolish, trashy romantic ideas aside, as well as terrifying stalkerish behavior, he’s almost perfect in every aspect!

I know that Kaburagi is the male lead of ‘You Are My Dolce’, but…!

How could he take my dream of going to a winter illumination with a lover from me? His master!?

That winter illumination…I wanted to see too!

Not with Oniisama, Imari-sama or that Tanuki! I want to have a romantic night, with my own lover too!

Uwaaaaah!

I really wanted to cry.

“…Kisshouin-san?”

A hand on my shoulders took me back to my senses.

“Ah, Enjou-sama. Forgive me. I’m still thinking about a proper location for the winter illumination.” I answered back with a smile.

“Oh, I see. Take your time, then.”

Thank you very much. But what’s with that look for, Enjou?

Not to mention, aren’t you supposed to be more knowledgeable about this kind of thing, considering your current status as someone else’s fiancée?

And stop glaring at me, Kaburagi. What happened to that red-faced boy from before?

He must have been so shocked from yesterday’s incident that he even forgot to buy a magazine related to his date today.

Idiot.

“So? Did you get anything?”

“Ah, excuse me for a moment, Kaburagi-sama.” I took out one of the magazines that I had prepared for my non-existent date for my final year of high school out and placed it on the table.

“As you can see here, there are a lot of winter illuminations being held all over Japan this year. But the most popular spots would be these four,” I pointed out to the ones I’ve already circled before. Each one had several cute little sticky notes at the side, which were filled with my handwriting.

“Oh, why don’t we just go to…”

“I however, would advise Kaburagi-sama against going to the one in Tokyo.”

“Huh? But why!? What’s wrong with that place!? It’s an amusement park, isn’t it? Then Takamichi and I could…”

Could what? Re-experiencing the joy of how a normal date should have been at an amusement park? Without booking it for yourself first?

Finally entering the world of mortals now aren’t you, Kaburagi?

“Because it was in Tokyo, Kaburagi-sama. Where many people we know, be it families, friends, or even acquaintances were at. Being the most popular one out of the four, it’s almost impossible for them not to be there.”

In fact, I could even name several Zuiran students who’s planning on going to the same amusement park. And let me tell you, Kaburagi. It’s not just simply several people.

The chance of you meeting them is quite high, you know. And if Imari-sama was to be believed, then there would be several other Oneesama who’ll be attending as part of his harem.

Don’t pout. Accept the reality.

To stress the danger of such a choice even further, I added,

“Takamichi-san will surely receive a serious blacklash if your relationship is exposed to your family. You know how complicated it’ll be, don’t you, Kaburagi-sama?”

“…I think Kisshouin-san is right, Masaya. Your parents won’t take the news kindly, much less the other members of high society. Unless you prove yourself to them, Takamichi-san would never get accepted as your partner.”

“But…”

“They might even try to find you a fiancée to break your relationship with Takamichi-san, Kaburagi-sama.”

At least, that did happen in the novel. Kisshouin Reika and Kaburagi Masaya almost become engaged due to them finding out about his relationship with a commoner.

In other words, if Kaburagi and Wakaba-chan got exposed right now, it’s highly likely that I would be involved as well.

And that is definitely a no.

The upcoming graduation, the day my fate is sealed.

As if I wanted any trouble during these critical times.

What are you looking so unsatisfied for!?

My family’s life depends on this!

“…Fine. I get it already.”

You better. It’s my future we’re talking about!

Anyway, Kaburagi began to flip on the magazine while Enjou peeked from the side in interest.

“That’s quite a detailed note, Kisshouin-san.”

“You know, I think this one has more detail than the one you wrote for the exams.”

“…Truly? Should I take it back then?” I asked back with a dazzling smile on my face, while reaching out for said magazine.

“Masaya.”

“…I’m just joking.”

Hmph.

Kaburagi began to read the entire magazine with a serious expression, probably formulating a proper plan after being attacked continuously by Enjou and I.

It’s kind of pitiful now that I look at it.

No, Reika.

Don’t be so soft. Don’t even had a string of pity towards the enemy.

That’s Kaburagi!

The one who made your life hell!

The one who took your dreams!

The one who pushed away all your luck in romance!

A new member of Casanova Village!

Speaking of which…

I turned to Enjou.

“Enjou-sama, don’t you have any good spot to recommend to Kaburagi-sama? I sure was surprised.” Surely this is simply a walk in the park for someone like you.

He simply smiled in response.

“I wonder,” he said. “I’m not sure if my idea would be good enough for Masaya, you see? I just go to wherever my partner invited me too.”

This again!?

A standard reply from a member of Casanova Village.

So you rather let the woman did all the thinking huh, Enjou?

His casual way of doing things irked me somehow.

“Where did you go on a date to in winter then?” I couldn’t help asking, and found myself seething in resentment at his answer.

I really shouldn’t have asked.

First with Kaburagi and his never-ending problems of romance, and now Enjou’s unwanted display of love…

Ah, now that I think about it, right now I’m the only one without a lover in this room.

Despite the three of us sitting at the top of the school hierarchy.

I suddenly realized how sad my life was.

Forget a boyfriend, I haven’t had a single confession in my entire life!

What’s the difference between the three of us anyway!?

After a long, long time browsing the magazine did Kaburagi decided on his pick for his date.

…But Kaburagi, while I really appreciate you listening to my concern and all, there’s really no need for you to go all the way to Kyushu, you know?

Even Enjou was surprised.

“This is a bit…” he murmured from my side.

Now that his concern for the date is settled, we chatted for a bit.

His useless romantic endeavors aside, Kaburagi sure is knowledgable in other things. He even gave me several advices without me asking.

The discussion for our future, for example.

Being the heirs of their respective families, both Kaburagi and Enjou will definitely choose the business course, just like Oniisama and Tomoe-senpai.

However, I, on the other hand, did not have that kind of restriction. The same goes with the other girls.

Whenever I talked to my friends about it, most of them just pick the course that seem interesting, or classy.

As of now, none of them choose it with a career in mind.

“What about Kisshouin?”

“I still have yet to choose a concise one.” I’ve thought of business course, simply because it was the same department Oniisama and Tomoe senpai were in.

That course was quite in demand nowadays too.

But now that I think of it, that means I’ll be in the same class with Kaburagi and Enjou for several years.

Huh?

Being in the same class with Kaburagi and Enjou? Wouldn’t that mean I need to spend most of my time with these two troublemakers?

Then I’ll be resuming my duties as a love guru again…

Wait.

.

.

.

KEEEEEEEEEEEH!

As if!

The reason why I didn’t have anyone right now is because of these two!

Not to mention Kaburagi will definitely pull me alongside him in his romantic endeavors!

And Enjou…

As if his current public display of affection wasn’t enough, do I really have to taint my eyes with the scene of those lovebirds!?

Especially when both of them will be closer than ever at the university.

And what if they went on a double date and asked me to come along!?

Do I have to live the rest of my life as a third-wheel in somebody’s relationship!? And eating their dog food!?

NO WAY!

IN YOUR DREAMS!

Then,

“Kisshouin-san?”

A hand landed at my shoulder once more.

Before I knew it, Enjou’s face was in front of me.

…Too close, too close.

“Enjou-sama, do you mind moving away a little?”

“Ah, sorry about that.”

As Enjou returned to his seat, I tried to calm myself down.

No, Reika.

Calm down.

It’s simply your imagination.

A hallucination.

Breathe in, breathe out… Okay, okay.

When I rose my head, two pair of scary eyes were boring down at me. Eeeeeek!

For some reason, Kaburagi and Enjou were staring at me. While Enjou gave me his usual archaic smile, Kaburagi was basically glaring.

“Kisshouin. What’s that just now?”

Kyaaaah!

Could it be my aura of envy leaked out!? And controlling my body!?

Or could it be he heard the insult I just hurled at him in my head!?

No, Reika. Even for Kaburagi, the male lead for ‘You are My Dolce’, such thing is impossible.

He won’t be here, pathetically asking for advice if that’s the case.

Act normally and smile. You’re an actress, Reika. An actress!

“Forgive me. Where were we again?”

Kaburagi’s eyes bore at me with suspicion.

“…Hey. You just glared at me, weren’t you?”

“Whatever are you talking about, Kaburagi-sama? Such thing, wasn’t it simply your imagination?”

I deflected his accusations one by one, laughing “Ohohohoho” until he’s too tired to press further.

Thankfully, Enjou was silent till the end, but that suggestive smile on his face...

I immediately changed the subject.

“Speaking of which, Kaburagi-sama, did you ask Takamichi-san about her plan for the future?”

 That took Kaburagi’s attention.

“About that. Takamichi told me that she’s still undecided about it.”

“Ah, I see...”

“...So I listed out and analyzed every available option that would seem suitable for her on a file and gave it to her.”

“...”

As expected of a stalker. How meticulous.

But still…

Kaburagi, you didn’t do it purely out of the goodness in your heart, didn’t you?

Did you secretly insert your department of choice in that file?

.

.

.

…Hey. You just avoided my gaze just now, didn’t you!?

I knew it!

“What about Takamichi-san’s reaction then, Masaya?”

“She seems ecstatic more than anything.”

Wakaba-chan…

You could at least be a little suspicious about this, you know?

Please think back about all the trouble Kaburagi brought you before!

“In some way they do make a compatible pair,” murmured Enjou from my side.

What does that supposed to mean, Enjou?

Perhaps sensing my gaze, Enjou turned to me and smiled.

Huh.

“That aside, I’m more concerned about Mizusaki.”

Huh? Fellow Stalking Horse?

“Mizusaki-kun? Why so suddenly…?”

“Masaya was worried that Takamichi-san will be in the same department as Mizusaki and dump him,” Enjou explained, smiling wryly.

“Hey! I didn’t say that!”

“Well, I paraphrased it for you, Masaya. It’s not like you had anything worth hiding from Kisshouin-san, in any case.”

“Shuusuke, you…!”

So Kaburagi was afraid that Fellow Stalking Horse will wipe Wakaba-chan off her feet once she regained her sanity and dump him, huh…

Well, not that I blame him or anything.

After all, someone like Fellow Stalking Horse is undoubtedly a wonderful man.

And for Kaburagi to have him as a love rival…

While everyone was going crazy about these two people, from a neutral standpoint, if we make a comparison between them…

To be honest, Fellow Stalking Horse is definitely the better option.

The only thing he lacked is in regards of family status and wealth.

But in return, Wakaba-chan would live the rest of her life in peace compared to what she experienced in the manga after her encounter with Kaburagi.

However,

“I do not believe that you need to be concerned about that, Kaburagi-sama,” I said while flipping the pages of the copy from Wakaba-chan’s file.

“Huh? What do you mean by that?”

“Mizusaki-kun was not interested in any of these options, you see. In fact, he is adamant on entering the law department.”

At least, that’s what Fellow Stalking Horse told me before. From the looks of it, he didn’t appear to be interested in any other options.

Kaburagi’s eyes narrowed in suspicion. “And how do you know about that?”

“…A little birdie told me.” I couldn’t possibly say that the man himself told me now, could I? They might brand me as a traitor who colluded with the enemy if they knew.

Now that I think of it, Mizusaki Arima in the manga too decided on the law department didn’t he…

He definitely had the man of justice aura with him.

“Law, huh…”

“Kaburagi-sama on the other hand, is definitely ill-suited for it.”

“Oi!”

“Well, I can’t disagree with that. Masaya did have a history of stalking someone before,” chimed Enjou with a laugh.

“Shuusuke…you bastard…!”

Kaburagi’s face somehow remind me of a raging bull.

Tsk.

Being his best friend, Enjou sure knew Kaburagi’s criminal records well. I’m not sure about the terms ‘before’ though…

I mean, Kaburagi’s still doing it, you know.

If not for that face and his family’s prestige, he’s probably already been charged as a stalker long ago.

Not to mention the victims, Yuuri-sama and Wakaba-chan who’s kind or perhaps oblivious enough to not say anything.

By the way Kaburagi, you’re fighting a losing battle. It’s better if you just sit down, you know?

From his eyes, I suppose Kaburagi still has doubt about Wakaba-chan’s feelings huh…

“But still, aren’t you thankful to Mizusaki now, Masaya?”

“Huh? What for?”

“I mean, at least he didn’t ruin your parade yesterday, did he?”

Kaburagi suddenly went silent, before sighing.

“Well, I can’t deny that. I guess I’m lucky enough that he didn’t appear during my confession.”

“…”

“Yeah, you can consider yourself lucky enough that no one discover you and Takamichi-san that day. That place was not what I would consider as ‘secluded’, after all.”

“You still won’t stop bringing that up, huh…”, muttered Kaburagi, arms crossed. “I already told you, no one was there, much less Mizusaki. He’s absent, wasn’t he? And…Why the heck are you looking at me like that, Kisshouin?”

My eyes drifted slightly to the side.

“…Nothing, nothing at all, Kaburagi-sama.”

…I can’t possibly tell him the truth now, couldn’t I?

If he knew I saw him pathetically reading his note of confession to Wakaba-chan, what will he do to me!? Not to mention, his rival in love, Fellow Stalking Horse was listening the same thing as well.

When I asked Satomi-kun about Fellow Stalking Horse’s condition this morning, he said that Fellow Stalking Horse behaved quite normally. At least. He didn’t appear heartbroken or anything like that when he heard the news.

“Are you sure about that, Satomi-kun? Are you sure he didn’t cry? Or appear lost in thought? Did he accidentally bump into someone while walking aimlessly?”

“Kisshouin-san, too close. You’re too close,” he said, raising his hands in surrender. “Yeah, I’m sure about that. But we’ll take the necessary precaution if something did happen, so don’t worry.”

Goodness!

Although you did sell your friends off several times to save your own skin, but still, what a good friend you are, Satomi-kun!

“Then I’ll be depending on you, Satomi-kun!”

“…Yes.” Satomi-kun seemed to be lost in thought, as he seemed to murmur something.

“…In fact, I think he seemed to be in a good mood today, rather than anything…”

Hmm?

“Did you say something Satomi-kun?”

I didn’t quite catch that.

“Nah, nothing.” Then, he glanced sideways at me. “But still, Kisshouin-san. You seemed awfully concerned about Mizusaki, aren’t you?”

“…Ah, he’s a good friend of mine, you see…”

“I don’t see you getting all that concern about me though. I’ve known you longer than that.”

Ehhh…

What kind of response is this, fellow rep?

Are you accusing me of practicing favoritism among friends, Satomi-kun?

“…You can try breaking up and have your heart broken, and then we’ll talk.”

“Are you cursing me?”

No, of course not.

But you need to experience living in Forever Alone Village once in a while, you know?

Don’t worry, it didn’t hurt that much.

Anyhow, why the heck is he looking at me like that?

He was staring silently and me with furrowed brows, as if he was thinking about something.

But what…?

Could it be that he was still thinking about what I said?

I’m half joking, you know. You boys are not the only one who knows how to joke.

“Is there something on my face, Satomi-kun?”

That woke him up.

“Ah, nothing. Nothing at all.” While saying that, his eyes shifted to the right.

Very suspicious.

While I do love my fellow rep and all, sometimes that man really like making trouble for me every now and then.

Especially when he began to grin like that out of nowhere.

I faintly remember the same expression during the Sport Festival and Cultural Festival, in which he pushed me to do absurd things for fun.

What the heck are you plotting, Satomi-kun?

I unconsciously took a step back.

Satomi-kun didn’t seem to notice it and approached me further, with his hands on my shoulders.

“Anyway, about Mizusaki…” He started, before sighing. Huh?

“I seem to remember his mood didn’t seem to be good this morning.”

Huh? So suddenly!?

“But you just said there’s nothing wrong with him.”

“…Ah, I might have missed that.”

“…”

“Anyway, I thought it wouldn’t be that effective if we tried cheering him up, so…”

He looked to me and smiled, saying,

“You could try cheering him up too, Kisshouin-san.”

That was my last conversation with Satomi-kun.

Anyhow, knowing Kaburagi, he must be self-conscious immediately after being told the truth. Adding his insecurities with Fellow Stalking Horse…

No, Reika.

You must take care of your safety as well. No matter how shockingly deplorable it was, you must keep your silent.

Such thing should be criticized privately, not publicly.

If push comes to shove, I could just rope Fellow Stalking Horse in with me and let it all out.

“It’s quite surprising, huh.”

“…I was worried that he’ll do something at the cafeteria when Takamichi and I made our announcement, but I guess it’s just my luck that he’s absent on that day,” said Kaburagi, who suddenly turned his gaze towards me. Huh?

“And speaking of being absent, where the hell did you go, Kisshouin?”

.

.

.

A sudden attack…!

“That’s right, Kisshouin-san. We’ve been looking all over for you yesterday, you know,” added Enjou, who’s eyeing me with an archaic smile.

Aren’t you supposed to be on my side!?

Speaking of which…

Was it just me or did the temperature drop all of a sudden?

“O-Ohohoho… Kaburagi-sama, Enjou-sama, I’m feeling unwell that day…” I exclaimed shakily, looking around before catching Enjou’s stare.

Kuh, don’t look into his eyes, Reika.

He’ll see through your bluff!

“And don’t let me start with your habit of blocking your contacts, Kisshouin.”

“…Ah, about that. I simply do not wish to be bothered due to my condition and all…”

Urgh. He still hold a grudge about that!?

Don’t you have other people to talk to!? That useless best friend of yours, for example!

In the end, I managed to escape with that flimsy excuse. At least, from Kaburagi. I made a point to not stare my left, where the devil was at.

Before I go out however, I decided to ask something that’s been bugging me for a while now.

“By the way, Kaburagi-sama. It may be impertinent for me to ask this but why would you suddenly announce your relationship to the public?”

I have no reservations if he wanted to confess to Wakaba-chan after the Entrance Exams but…!

Why must it be in such a public place where anyone can hear you!?

Do you not have any idea about your current status, Kaburagi!?

I told him to go to a secluded place for his confession was to make sure it was kept as a secret!

And what did this idiot do!?

Don’t you know how much trouble you brought me today!?

I was being given pitying looks from other students because of you!!

Not a small number of people tried to comfort me and gave me some sort of dessert as soon as I stepped into the school.

Even…Even my cute kouhai Minami-kun gave me a huge box of chocolate, all because he thought I was heartbroken…

ALL BECAUSE OF YOU!

IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT, YOU HEAR ME!?

“Huh? Oh, aren’t relationship supposed to be made public?”

“…”

“…”

.

.

.

DAMN YOU, KABURAGI!

GO DIE IN A DITCH, YOU HEAR ME!?

GO TO HELL!

***

Despite all the chaos that’s been going on, my job as a class rep went on as usual. Things like helping the teachers with some errands, for one.

Satomi-kun, my fellow rep was on another errand so I was alone.

Also, somehow I felt like the entire room was staring at me. Was it just my imagination?

There were no other students except for me, so the teachers…?

But why!?

“Thank you for all your hard work this year, Kisshouin-san,” said my homeroom teacher, effectively broke me out of my reverie.

“…Ah, thank you for your hard work as well, sensei,” I replied before bowing my head.

As I was about to excuse myself however, my hand was grabbed from behind. For some reason, my homeroom teacher stared at me with a complicated expression on her face.

“…Say, Kisshouin-san. It might not be my place to comment something about this, but, if you have any problems, you can just talk to me, you know? As your sensei and a woman who is much older and has much more experience, I can, no, I will definitely help you.”

“Huh?”

Then someone who I recognized as my middle school homeroom teacher came and patted my shoulders, saying,

“It’s fine to let yourself be sad for a while, Kisshouin-san. I experienced the same thing when I was your age. This pain you felt, you can consider it as a rite of passage, a growing experience, and you will be a better, stronger person for it.“

Huh!?

Before long, several other teachers began to surround me, saying things like,

“Kisshouin-san, you are an exemplary student that we had no worries about you. This world is vast. You’ll definitely meet other people who suits you better.”

“Yes, yes. That’s right, Kisshouin-san. If you could fall that hard for a person who is wrong for you, imagine how hard you can fall for the person who is perfect for you."

“You’re still young, Kisshouin-san. There’s no need to feel down about something like this. There’s definitely a much better future waiting for you.”

In the end they even gave me several gifts like chocolate box, chocolate bar, mochi and…cat strap?

But why!?

Why are you looking at me with pitiful gazes like that!?

Now that I think about it, the things they said to me…weren’t these the kind of stuff you would tell a heartbroken person?

Don’t tell me…

“It didn’t really matter how wonderful Kaburagi-kun is, if he didn’t want your love, then you will eventually find someone who does, Kisshouin-san.”

.

.

.

I KNEW IT!

Despite my efforts denying all the accusations that were thrown at me, all the teachers in the room seemed to believe that I am upset with the news about Kaburagi and Wakaba-chan dating.

“I will definitely support you,” exclaimed my current homeroom teacher, before pulling out something from her bag.

Hmmm? This is…!

Before I knew it, I was carrying a huge bag with all the presents to my classroom, where another stash of desserts were at.

“This seems a little familiar…” muttered my fellow rep to my side.

Sorry, Satomi-kun.

You won’t leave me alone with all these gifts now, right?

You’ll help me, won’t you?

“…I’m not even sure where on earth did they get this idea of giving me chocolates to calm me down in the first place. I don’t remember being that easy,” I said.

“…”

“Hey. What are you looking at?”

“…Nah, it’s nothing.”

Probably sensing my dissatisfaction, Satomi-kun immediately changed the subject. He took one box from the stash, saying,

“This is a lot more than what you received last time, isn’t it? To think that even the teachers get involved, they really went all out with this, aren’t they…”

“…” I’m not sure whether I should be flattered or not.

I love receiving gifts as much as the next person, but…!

Why are all these due to their misconceptions about me being heartbroken due to Kaburagi and Wakaba-chan’s relationship!?

Also! Why the heck would I felt anything towards that damn Kaburagi, anyway!?

“I really don’t get it. What the heck makes them so sure that I’ll be despairing over the news?”

I know that Kisshouin Reika was supposed to be a villain and all, but…!

Had I not explained countless times that I held not one speck of feelings towards that idiot!?

He could join the enemy village for all I care!

Even when I tried to crush the rumors down the drain by using the connections that I have, none of them truly works. According to Akizawa-kun and Class Rep, the rumors have rooted in Zuiran rumor mills since long ago. From elementary school, to be exact.

BUT WHO STARTED THIS SHIT!?

“I guess the others didn’t really like to entertain the fact that you’re not interested in Kaburagi-kun nor Enjou-kun, Kisshouin-san. After all, you guys are an ideal couple in their eyes.”

Ideal, my foot.

I really should’ve just ship both of them to the temple, and shaved their heads myself.

“…Kisshouin-san. It’s not like I don’t understand what you’re feeling right now but it’s pointless if you want to take action now, of all times.”

“I know, but…”

“Think from the positive side, Kisshouin-san. At least your treatment is much better compared to Mizusaki.”

“Mizusaki-kun?”

Why Fellow Stalking Horse?

I did ask Satomi-kun to keep an eye on him, as well as collecting information from my spies but I have yet to meet him myself.

“…Ah.  The boys didn’t stop crowding around him today. They kept needlessly comforting him nonstop as well as stopping Takamichi-san from approaching him.” He shook his head. “Even I as a spectator felt it’s quite annoying, to be honest.”

Then, he paused for a moment.

“Um, I’m not sure if I should tell you this or not, but…”

“What is it?”

“They were planning on inviting him for a blind date this week.”

AGAIN!?

My eyes immediately narrowed in suspicion.

“Was it Kenmari Dainagon again?”

“…Yeah…”

I KNEW IT!

Apparently, Kenmari Dainagon wanted to end his bachelor life and has attended several blind dates these days. Coincidentally, unlike him, his usual companion actually managed to hook up with one of them, leaving him on his own.

So he’s trying to convince Fellow Stalking Horse to replace his companion.

.

.

.

I’m convinced.

Despite his current single status right now, Kenmari Dainagon will never ever swore his allegiance to the Forever Alone Village.

He actually dare to kidnap one of my precious villagers under my nose!?

My vice-chief, too!

I really shouldn’t have let him off in the first place.

Considering his endless sins against me, the fear that I have planted deep in his heart must’ve vanished by now.

Not to mention, I haven’t seen Kenmari Dainagon in a while. I kind of miss him a bit.

Now that the Entrance Exam’s over, we have a lot of free time, aren’t we?

If you think you’re lacking some female companion, how about I help you with that?

As I was thinking that, the edge of my lips curled up.

“…Kisshouin-san, your face’s actually kind of scary now…”

“My, was it not simply your imagination, Satomi-kun?”

“No, really. You look like a serial killer in the movie, Kisshouin-san.” He paused and hesitatingly asked, “You’re not planning on bringing Azumi down once and for all, are you? I mean, your smile is pretty terrifying.”

Don’t mind the details, Satomi-kun.

As I laugh “Ohohohohoho,” Satomi-kun simply sighed and told me not to scare Kenmari Dainagon so much.

Speaking of which…

“Do you want some, Satomi-kun?”

I tried to offer my fellow rep a part of the gifts like last time but he shook his head, saying,

“These gifts seem like it would bring bad luck, more than anything…”

Hey!

Aren’t you supposed to be on my side!?

So am I supposed to finish all these on my own!?

These cursed gifts!?

With all the things that happened, do you really think I have any remaining luck left to be sacrificed!?

“Satomi-kun…”

  “…Stay strong, Kisshouin-san.”

Saying that, Satomi-kun patted my back with a smile.

***

After his public announcement, Kaburagi seemed to be following Wakaba-chan wherever she goes.

Huh? What’s the difference, you ask?

Well, rather than just pulling her for a small talk whenever they passed by each other, Kaburagi was basically waiting outside her class, before going to whatever business they both have.

That idiot.

Even Wakaba-chan was surprised.

Due to his actions, Wakaba-chan went around Zuiran with Kaburagi most of the time. I could barely see her with her friends anymore.

Damn Kaburagi.

She has her own friends too, okay!?

Just because you’re dating, that didn’t mean she need to be with you all the time!

If you’re that lonely, how about searching for that best friend of yours!?

Where is he anyway!?

However, I have to admit.

Kaburagi’s presence certainly have its own advantages, especially in repelling troublesome threats such as Tsuruhana and her gang.

From what I heard, they have been plotting to corner Wakaba-chan and have her break up with Kaburagi as fast as possible. But there’s almost zero chance for them to do so.

Speaking of which…

I thought Wakaba-chan’s friends would be ecstatic due to the Emperor’s presence but apparently I was wrong.

From what I’ve heard, they were too afraid of the repercussions they may face by hanging out with the Emperor, who was the idol of the entire school that they dash away as soon as they can at the slightest hint that Kaburagi wish to hang out with Wakaba-chan.

Now that I think about it, all of them were former student council members like Wakaba-chan too, weren’t they?

Their reactions were a bit tame compared to the other girls.

Now that I think about it, they seem to be glancing at the direction where Fellow Stalking Horse and his numerous dedicated bodyguards were at. Even from far away, I could sense the irritation in Fellow Stalking Horse’s expression.

Hmmm….Could it be that rather than Kaburagi, they were pining for Fellow Stalking Horse?

Ah…!

Now that Wakaba-chan has been spoken for, will they start making their move!?

No way!

Over my dead body!

Fellow Stalking Horse is a member of my village! My vice-chief even!

I accompany him on his heartbreak trip not long ago, but for him to get over it in such a short time!?

Even…Even if he wanted to leave the village that badly, what’s wrong with bringing me along with him…

“Reika-sama? Is there something wrong?” Serika-chan’s voice broke me out of my reverie. When I came back to my senses, I saw Serika-chan and the others started looking at me with concern.

“Hmm? Ah, nothing to be fret about. Sorry for worrying you, Serika-chan, everyone.”

Goodness. My aura of envy just leaked out.

The stress from Kaburagi must have been piling up, for me to get this mad at my vice chief.

No, calm down Reika.

Breathe in, breathe out. Yes, that’s it.

Fellow Stalking Horse is your fellow villager. Why are you getting all mad at him? Didn’t you wish for a wonderful encounter between him and the maids at the café?

How could you suddenly become the demon that got in everyone’s romance!?

Remember the teaching of the Forever Alone Village!

Do not wish harm upon your friends!

Do not get in their pursuit of romance!

.

.

.

When we entered the cafeteria, our gaze immediately shifted to the center. Where the Emperor of Zuiran was at.

To be exact, where the Emperor of Zuiran and his girlfriend were at.

Despite the fact that all the attention were upon their table, it seemed that the two people were unaware of it.

From the corner of my eyes, I saw Serika-chan and the others’ lips trembled as they watched the scene playing out, that I almost felt sorry for them.

“Let’s find our seat, shall we?”

“…Yes, Reika-sama.”

Anyhow, after sitting down, I took my chance to look around the cafeteria to see the reactions of the other students.

Some time has passed after Kaburagi dropped the bomb, but according to Saika-chan, there was still mixed reactions among the Zuiran students.

Apparently they were divided into three groups; the supporters, the oppositions, and the neutrals.

I had a feeling the majority was in the second group though.

At least, I knew that Ririna and her gang didn’t seem to mind much, though the former has been bothering me nonstop last night.

Despite arriving to school later than usual yesterday, for some reason she already knew that I was playing truant outside, and kept asking me if I was troubled by Kaburagi and Wakaba-chan’s relationship.

I’m kind of scared of what she’ll do so I hurriedly deny it.

During these troubled times, I really didn’t need anyone digging up a hole for me to jump in.

Anyhow, my friends aside, the Pivoine members at the salon would definitely find this relationship a blasphemy on their prestige.

Not that they could do anything about it.

Even at the Salon, I noticed a number of the Pivoine members didn’t even move from their spot, opting to do their own things. Fuyuko-sama and Sarara-sama, for one. And a few others.

The others who certainly displeased by the news didn’t seemed like they dare to bring it up to Kaburagi.

Surprisingly, the first-years who made a scene last years were silent as well, though they did glance at me every so often.

Hmmm, were they in the neutral faction, perhaps?

I knew that Fuyuko-sama and Sarara-sama lived in their own worlds so that much was true. The first-years on the other hand…

Could it be that they were too traumatized by Kaburagi spartan training to even join the rebellion? Afraid that Kaburagi would haunt them again?

To think that these people were the troublesome, cocky brats from before…

Amazing, Kaburagi.

Quelling down the seeds of rebellion before it even started…It’s like he can predict the future.

Speaking of which,

When I bring up the topic of my future career to my parents, both of them were adamant that I enter Zuiran, no matter how excellent the other universities were. Because I’m a Pivoine and all that.

“Why not Zuiran, Reika!?”

“Otousama, too close, you’re too close. Anyhow, I simply wanted a change of pace.”

I mean, if the downfall of the Kisshouin family did happen, won’t it be embarrassing for me to suddenly quit due to the lack of fund? Not to mention most of them already knew me to begin with.

Won’t the Kisshouin name suffer?

Am I not being a thoughtful daughter here!?

“Reika-san, Okaasama understand your feelings. However, Zuiran is undoubtedly the best university there is. Or, could it be that you’re planning on enter the same university as Fukioka-san?”

“Ah, no. It’s just that…”

In the end, despite all the things I said, my admission to Zuiran University has been set in stone. I took my Entrance Exams for Zuiran University with my other friends, much to their delight.

.

.

.

You’ve done it, Tanuki.

Starting tomorrow, I’ll definitely show you the danger of corruption and fraud. This time…I’ll make sure that you know…!

…What does ‘Swift is Heaven’s Judgement’ truly means.

Steel yourself.

Anyhow, I told Oniisama, who just arrived from work about the news.

He didn’t seem surprised.

“Is that really weird? If you already agreed, then just go.”

“But won’t it be embarrassing if I pull out all of a sudden?”

“Huh? Why exactly would you pull out?”

“…”

“What did you say?”

“…If Otousama got caught for fraud, won’t we lose most of our money?”

“This again?”

Oh gosh, Oniisama. Don’t look at me like that.

You may not believe it, and it may not happen, but what’s wrong with preparing for the worst?

Hmmm…Now that I think of it, Otousama and Okaasama would be going on a trip which, incidentally, the same time as my entrance exams. Should I just…

“Reika, don’t.”

“But Oniisama…”

“Don’t worry. Like I said before, I’m not that useless that I couldn’t provide for my sister’s future. Just trust me, okay?” He patted my head and shot me a kind smile.

He even prepared the necessary document as a proof to his claim.

O-Oniisama!

To think that he already prepared a fund just for my studies…!

What a reliable brother!

With such an excellent brother, how could I have any worries about my future!?

“Ah, and there’s still Imari, you know.”

“Imari-sama?”

…The Casanova Village Chief?

Would Imari-sama be alright if we suddenly ask for money?

I mean, if the downfall did happen, I could hardly imagine Imari-sama turning his back on us and all, but…

“Imari has heaps of secrets he didn’t want others to know. If worst comes to worst, we can just extort him for some.”

.

.

.

Huh?

“O-Oniisama, what did you just…”

Did my ears just tricked me?

Not asking for money, but blackmailing…

O-Oniisama!

Your eyes…They’re terrifying!

The secret Imari-sama has…Could it be…The list of his past lovers? But it’s no secret the kind of person the Imari-sama is, and I hardly doubt his parents didn’t know about it, Oniisama. So what kind of secret that Imari-sama wanted to hide…?

I gasped.

Could it be…!?

Don’t tell me…Did you mess with married woman, Casanova Village Chief!?

Even for you, isn’t that too much!?

Hmmm….I seem to remember Imari-sama charmed Okaasama and Kaburagi’s mother with his sweet words before.

And if I follow that theory, then…!

Eeeeeeeeek!!!

No, no, no! Stop delving deeper, Reika!

Remember, ignorance is bliss! Ignorance is bliss!

I desperately shook my head to forget all the images inside my brain.

Okay, calm down Reika. Yes, that’s it.

Oh, god.

Just how deep into the swamp of lust did you fall into, Casanova Village Chief!?

Do you even have a way to return to the right path!?

“So that’s why, don’t worry about it too much, Reika.”

“…I see. I’ll leave it to you, then, Oniisama.”

…For your sake, you better pray that the Kisshouin family wouldn’t fall into ruin, Imari-sama.

***

I don’t know why, but the heat regarding Kaburagi and Wakaba-chan’s relationship has yet to fade. The Zuiran students, well, some of them were still in denial about it all.

With the way Kaburagi waltzing around with Wakaba-chan almost every single day, they should be used to it, no?

But I was wrong.

Thankfully, Serika-chan and the others have decided to accept the harsh reality and moved on, although their gazes towards Kaburagi was a little heartbreaking to look at.

Anyhow, regarding this, I decided to act as a spectator and asked my friends to do the same, as to avoid making Kaburagi mad and all. I mean, if they did bully Wakaba-chan, then wouldn’t it involve me as well, since I’m their leader?

Kaburagi by himself is annoying, but an angry Kaburagi is something I’m not looking forward to see.

Especially if that anger was directed to me, just like in the manga.

Even through the phone, I could feel his rage when I purposely ignore his useless mails about either Wakaba-chan or their date.

What a terrifying man, that Kaburagi.

Anyhow, despite my identity as Kaburagi’s mentor as well as Wakaba-chan’s friend, watching the fun from the sideline was my initial plan.

However, before I knew it, another rumor began to circulate among the Zuiran populace.

It was Tsugumi Saika-chan, my trusted spy as well as Ririna’s close friend who approached and told me about it.

“Rumors? What kind of rumors could you possibly be talking about?”

There’s already numerous rumors and gossips about the current situation, so what makes this one any different, is what I wanted to ask.

For her to suddenly pulled me into this secluded place, rather than simply sending me a mail…

Was it that important?

But Tsugumi-chan just looked at me with complicated gaze, and stammered. Huh?

“Please feel free to speak at your comfort,” I said with a smile.

“Um, that is…”

Is…?

I thought about convincing her a little bit more, but she suddenly went to a frenzy and shouted,

“SomeonewasmakinguparumoraboutReika-samabeingarejectandbesmirchReika-sama’sreputation!”

Huh?

What did she say?

“Um, could you please slow down a bit, Tsugumi-chan…”

I tried calming her down and patted her back repeatedly.

Yes, that’s it. Breathe in, breathe out…

It feels good, isn’t it? That’s how I usually do when Kaburagi is involved.

“So, can you tell me now? About the rumor.”

Tsugumi-chan was gazing at me with the same complicated expression, swallowed and started her story.

“Someone was…making up a rumor about Reika-sama being a reject and… besmirch Reika-sama’s reputation…”

“…A reject?” I repeated.

…Huh?

The main idea of the rumor was that Kaburagi had already rejected me early on when I confessed to him, and I was so humiliated by the rejection that eventually led to my absence on the day of the announcement about Kaburagi and Wakaba-chan’s relationship.

And some other rumor said that I was rejected by both Kaburagi and Enjou, and I was also depicted as the shameless villainess that got in way of people’s relationship.

With the way people are talking about it, it seems like the description actually did match the manga Kisshouin Reika.

And not the person that I am.

A villainess who comes between the love life of the male and female lead, and try her best to interfere and destroy said relationship?

Me!? Confessing to Kaburagi and Enjou!? Do they really see me as a blind person who only thinks about looks!?

I TOO VALUE ONE’S PERSONALITY, OKAY!?

Kaburagi with his forceful approach, stalkerish behavior and idiotic ideas…

Enjou with his evil schemes and terrifying eyes like Japanese dolls…

THOSE KIND OF PEOPLE ARE NOT MY TYPE!

AND BEING REJECTED BY THEM? WHO, ME!?

AS IF!

IF ANYONE DOING THE REJECTION, IT’S GOING TO BE ME, OKAY!?

“Um, Reika-sama?”

“…I’ll kill them…”

“Eh…?”

WHO IS IT!?

WHO THE HECK IS SPREADING THESE UNFOUND RUMORS!?

“Reika-sa…”

“…Saika-chan.”

The edge of my lips involuntarily curled upwards.

“Y-Yes!?”

“Would you mind doing me a favor?”

***

Before long, the results for our Entrance Exams came out.

How nerve-racking.

Oh, my stomach hurts…

The night before, I spent the entire night chatting and having discussion with my friends about today. With Serika-chan and the others, Sakura-chan, Aoi-chan, Akizawa-kun, even Satomi-kun…

My chat with Serika-chan and the others filled with topic of Kaburagi and Enjou, as per usual.

They didn’t care much about their grades, and seemed confident enough that they could pass, having chosen the least competitive department and all.

Serika-chan and the others, while they initially wished to enter the business department due to Kaburagi and Enjou’s presence, the competition was too fierce. Hence, they simply relent by being in the same university as those two, and hoping they would get the chance to pass each other, or something like that.

Boys like Satomi-kun and Akizawa-kun didn’t seem all that nervous as well.

Among those I’ve chatted, Aoi-chan was the only one who shared the same feelings as me. We’ve spending our time comforting each other.

Speaking of which, Sakura-chan surprisingly took Zuiran Entrance Exam as well. I could barely hide my shock when she suddenly approached me from behind on the day of the exam.

Anyhow, when I told Sakura-chan about my worries about my future, she immediately called me, saying,

“Reika, are you sure that’s not the results of you reading too much shoujo manga?”

“How could you say such a thing, Sakura-chan!”

Even if ‘You are My Dolce’ was a manga in my previous life, but this would become my reality if I didn’t play my cards right!

Speaking of which, didn’t Kaburagi made a public announcement in the manga as well? If it happened in at the cafeteria, doesn’t that mean it follows the flow of the manga?

Uwaah, then, what about me!?

Far from bullying Wakaba-chan, I didn’t even harbor a speck of romantic feelings towards Kaburagi, unlike the manga Kisshouin Reika. But, what if my ending was already decided from the very beginning!?

The downfall of the Kisshouin family…

I don’t want that…

Even with my suspicion with the tanuki, Oniisama himself has done an exemplary job as the heir of our company, and from what I heard, many people already approved of him. Just looking at this, it’s almost impossible for the future to happen.

Also, being the smart person that I was, there’s already a written agreement between me and Kaburagi, but would that idiot really follow the plan?

What if he found a loophole that he could take advantage of!?

The humiliation that Kisshouin Reika faced during graduation, and the Kisshouin family’s downfall…

The fate of a villainess…

.

.

.

You left me with no choice, Kaburagi.

I shall diligently remind you of our agreement starting now. From morning to night, even in your sleep, you wouldn’t escape.

Prepare yourself.

“…By the way, Sakura-chan. If I couldn’t avoid that kind of fate, how about letting me work at Akizawa-kun’s company? Does he need a new assistant?”

Akizawa-kun himself was an Internal student. While his standing was not as comparable as either Kaburagi or Enjou, his family owned quite a decent company. And Akizawa-kun, being the male heir will surely inherit it.

“Haaah!? Don’t be ridiculous.”

Ehhh…

Such a fast response.

So cruel, Sakura-chan…

“…Even if something like that happens, you can just work with me, Reika. I may not inherit my family’s company, but my grandmother was already planning on handing me her boutique.”

“Ehh? Truly!?”

That’s amazing, Sakura-chan!

To be honest, working together with a good friend like Sakura-chan is more enjoyable compared to working in Kisshouin company.

At least I won’t be fretting about my coworkers talking smack about me and all that.

No one would make fun of my hair…

And Sakura-chan even assure me that she’ll pay me extra if I ever need the money.

Anyhow…

“Thank you very much, Sakura-chan!”

“…Right. I don’t really think that’ll happen, but, well, as long as you’re happy.”

Goodness…

What a wonderful friend!

Sakura-chan reminded me to go to sleep early before hanging up.

Now that my plan B has already been decided, most of my worries slowly fades away.

The next morning, my parents were all smiles as they waited for me during breakfast. For some reason, both of them already congratulated me for passing the test.

Huh?

This kind of confidence, where did it come from…?

I still haven’t check the results yet, you know…

Won’t you get embarrassed if I suddenly fail? Not that I wanted to, of course.

But still…

It didn’t hurt to be a little pessimistic, don’t you think? At least you won’t hurt that much if the results didn’t match your expectations.

However, despite my reasoning, both Tanuki and Okaasama already planning on celebrating at some high-end restaurant tonight. Oniisama who was silently eating his food simply smiled and gave me a pat on the head before leaving.

Apparently, he was quite busy with a new project these days. He did assure me that he’ll get it done before dinner though…

Even Oniisama…

Huh? Tanuki and Okaasama too? You guys are leaving? Just like that?

Without any word of support?

What do you mean, “We’ll see you tonight”?

I also need a several encouraging words, you know?

Tanuki! Okaasama! Oniisama!!

Come baaaack!!

Hmm?

Ah, I got a message.

Good luck, Reika-tan! I’ll be rooting for you!’

.

.

.

Be-Bea-tan…!

As expected of my doppelganger!

Thank you very much!

***

I was feeling fidgety during my entire journey to Zuiran University until I came across a surprising sight.

It was my magnificent first love and the man of my dreams, Tomoe-senpai, standing on the side. The sight of him leaning against the tree lazily…!

What a welcoming feast to the eyes.

Hmmmm…

Was he waiting for someone? I started to look around.

It looks like the others were too busy crowding near the announcement board to notice him. Should I take my chance? In such a public place?

But if I forgo this chance…

It didn’t take long before I fully make up my mind.

I immediately called his name,

“Tomoe senpai!”

And trotted to his side.

“Huh? Oh, it’s you, Kisshouin-san!”

“Gokigen’you, Tomoe senpai!”

“Good morning!” He replied back with a grin.

Uwaaah, what a dazzling smile!

I knew it! Tomoe senpai was more brilliant at a close distance.

Among all things, I could hardly expect this to happen. To think that my first love, who I last met at the Cultural Festival, was currently in front of me. In flesh!

Oh my! Could this is what my love fortune mean!?

Tomoe senpai, the man of my dreams who I could only meet a handful of times was here.

What a great blessing!

Could this be my reward for working hard these past few years!?

Oh god! If this is a dream, please don’t let it be over!

“I would have asked what are you doing here, but today is the day your result came out, isn’t it?”

“Yes! What about you, senpai?” It’s not like I’m not happy for his presence. But as far as I know, there won’t be any class today, being weekdays and all.

“I have some business to attend to,” he replied as he waved the file on his hand.

Ehhh...So it’s because of work? I thought you’ll be here a while longer though, O’ Fortuna…

As I was chatting with my beloved senpai, a familiar voice suddenly rang out.

“Senpai, Kisshouin.”

I turned around to find Fellow Stalking Horse approaching us.

“Oh, Gokigen’you, Mizusaki-kun!”

“Oh, Arima’s here too?”

While Tomoe-senpai and Fellow Stalking Horse were exchanging pleasantries, I took my chance to examine my vice chief. It was my first time interacting with him after our last outing.

Haaaaah…

…As expected of the second male lead in ‘You are My Dolce’. In casual clothing, he looked a lot cooler than usual. Even the other girls started pointing at him while blushing.

His fellow villager on the other hand, were treated like a banshee who caused the boys to flee at first sight! How unfair was this!?

And I’m looking at you, Kenmari Dainagon!!

Not only did he started several unfounded rumors about me, he even dare to encroach upon my love life!

That little…!

Should I pay him a visit? What department did he aim for, again?

As I was busy planning Kenmari Dainagon’s doom, the conversation between the two went around my ears.

“I guess today’s my lucky day, since I didn’t expect to see you both here at the same time. Hasn’t it been quite a while, Arima?”

“…I’ve been busy.”

“I see, I see,” nodded Tomoe-senpai, grinning. “I would love to accompany you both to see your results, but I have to get going soon. How about an early congratulations?”

“I would have preferred something more than just lip service, senpai.”

“Eh…”

Fellow Stalking Horse went silent for a while, seemingly thinking of something. Huh? Was it just me or did Fellow Stalking Horse gazed over here just now?

“…Then senpai, why don’t you treat Kisshouin and I today?”

“Huh? So suddenly?”

“I remember you’re saying something about giving me a present if I pass the Entrance Exam.”

“…Ah, I did remember saying that.”

“Also,” For some reason, Fellow Stalking Horse shifted his gaze on me, as he spoke slowly, “It’ll be boring with just the two of us, so how about asking Kisshouin to join us?”

That sentence sounds familiar somehow…

I’m not sure if you’re mocking me or not, comrade.

And to finish it off, Fellow Stalking Horse exclaimed,

“Aren’t we your ‘most cherished kouhai’, as you put it?”

S-So bold, Fellow Stalking Horse!

I know that Tomoe-senpai is kind and all, but aren’t you being rude? But Fellow Stalking Horse didn’t seem too worried, and he just bring my name up too, didn’t he?

Hmmm…

I’ve decided.

For the chance of having one in a lifetime date with Tomoe-senpai, I decided to swallow back my words and silently gazed at my first love.

I’m not pressuring you, okay?

…But, do you really have the heart to reject this cute kouhai of yours, that you claimed to see as a little sister?

After you trampled all over my heart?

Answer me, O’ Fortuna!

“Eh…” Tomoe-senpai who finally noticed my gaze froze, and started backing away. But the more he moved, the more I stepped forward. Meanwhile, my eyes didn’t even blink.

Say whatever you want, but I won’t be defeated!

“This is a scary sight,” Fellow Stalking Horse muttered from behind, but I don’t care!

Even though Tomoe-senpai promised to visit me often after graduating, I’ve only met him a handful of times.

During White Day, at the Cultural Festival and right now!

He’s not Onii-sama so I couldn’t be too willful, but that didn’t mean I could just give up this opportunity that had been sent to me on a silver platter!

That’s why, I’ll fight till the end!

In the end, after he got cornered with his back against the tree, Tomoe-senpai finally raised his hands in surrender, saying,

“Alright, alright, I get it. I’ll treat you both, okay?” He then looked at me and said helplessly, “You too Kisshouin-san. You’ll hurt your eyes, so please stop.”

Hearing that, my expression lit up instantly, and I stepped back.

“Goodness, you shouldn’t have, Tomoe-senpai. Aren’t you supposed to be busy? But if you insist senpai, then I’ll be happy to join you both.” To finish it, I bowed with a smile, “Thank you, Tomoe-senpai.”

“…”

“…You’re welcome.”

Thankfully, I managed to secure the promise from Tomoe-senpai at that time, as he got a call not long after from the professor he’s supposed to meet with.

“Well then. I’ll be going first, Kisshouin-san, Arima.”

“See you later, senpai.”

Gokigen’you, Tomoe-senpai!”

Haaaah, what a short, wonderful encounter.

And to think that I’ll be having lunch with my first love after this…!

Oh god.

Is today truly my lucky day?

Am I going to experience my long-awaited spring!?

I immediately turned to my side.

“Thank you, Mizusaki-kun!” I said sincerely.

“Ah, it’s nothing. I’m afraid that you’ll get at me again for ‘hogging’ Tomoe-senpai, as you put it. Not to mention, you’re quite stressed out due to the new rumors, aren’t you?”

Eh? You also knew about that?

“…I didn’t expect for you to be attentive to these kind of things, Mizusaki-kun. I sure was surprised.”

Being honest, I seriously never pegged him as someone who is interested in gossips and all that. Also, I thought he’ll be busy training his new successor and all these days.

“People kept talking about that kind of thing over and over again these days. It’s almost impossible for me not to know.”

Ah…

“…Especially when you make that racket with Kaburagi a few days ago.”

“…”

“…I’ve been thinking, Kisshouin. You’re not really thinking about killing him, are you?”

“Of course not.”

Kaburagi is the one and only heir of the Kaburagi family. I’ll be an idiot to do that.

At the very least, non-lethal injuries was what I would go for.

I’m sure that a little chair won’t hurt.

“Anyway, Satomi and Akizawa also mentioned something about you being in a bad mood because of that.” He looked up in thought for a moment, before saying,

“…Just treat it as my gift for you.” And he smiled.

Oh my!

My vice chief, who’s totally unaware of my initial plan to mess up with his love life due to a moment of envy, was paying back my hate with boon!

I had wronged you, Fellow Stalking Horse.

To think that I, the proud Chief of the Forever Alone Village, actually had the traitorous thought to betray my fellow villager who stuck with me through thick and thin like this…!

To think that the reality of Kaburagi’s successful ventures has turned me to this kind of person…!

It’s all Kaburagi’s fault!

And Enjou too!

Those troublemaking bastards keep bothering me every now and then about the tiniest thing, while talking about their love life casually as they laughed, as if I don’t exist!

I also want to talk about my love life too, okay!?

That damn Kaburagi, who tend to spoke thoughtless things like, “Eh, you knew about it, Kisshouin?” when I spoke about places that’s popular for dates as if he’s mocking my position as Forever Alone Village Chief while he’s already moving to another village!

Throwing me away like that, after I spent my precious time guiding him to the art of understanding a commoner’s life! What an ungrateful disciple!

You’re no better that me, you got it!? You remember the necklace you painstakingly took long time to make!? It has been given to Wakaba-chan’s sister! It didn’t matter how graved your initials alongside hers as you pour your love into the necklace, it’s useless! The necklace has now become a child’s plaything! You got it!?

And Enjou! Despite his new status as someone’s fiancée, he actually has the guts to invite me to the places in the magazine with just the two of us, as if he’s pitying me for my lack of love life! Be aware of your status, why don’t you!? If someone founds out that the Enjou’s heir who’s engaged was going out with Kisshouin’s family daughter like this, won’t it invite nasty rumors!? About me being the third wheel in their relationship!?

As if!

I won’t be anyone’s third wheel, you hear me!? Not to Kaburagi, not to you either!

I’m a peaceful Village Chief of the Forever Alone Village! Not the villainous Reika in the manga!

Also, how often did he neglect his brother that Yukino-kun was in a bad mood every time I went to the Petite Pivoine? And when I asked Yukino-kun about his brother’s whereabouts, he pouted and spoke Yuiko-san’s name as he snuggled in my arms!

As if it’s not enough that I’m hearing about their love life from their own mouths, I also had to hear it from other people as well!

And those rumors!

Gaaaahhh!!!

These irksome Fulfilling Romance villagers!

Damn them! Damn them all!!

While I was busy cursing those two, I suddenly heard someone calling my name from behind.  As if my curse has been acting up again, I suddenly found myself facing Kaburagi and Enjou.

And Wakaba-chan.

.

.

.

Let me rephrase it.

Fellow Stalking Horse and I were walking together to see our results. And all of a sudden, someone called my name, causing both of us to turned around. And in front of us, were Wakaba-chan, the one Fellow Stalking Horse likes, Kaburagi who is her current boyfriend, and Enjou.

Satomi-kun told me about how the boys tried to avoid having Mizusaki accidentally stumbled upon the two in attempt to safeguard his heart, and I didn’t hear anything from my spy about him confronting the two.

Simply speak, this is the first time the three of them were together after Kaburagi’s confession.

…This is bad. No, scratch that. This is the worst thing that can happen.

Why did we run into them, of all people!?

And why am I the witness to this scene anyway!?

It’s as if the time had stopped. No one said anything, and no other people could be found here.

“Go-Gokigen’you, Kaburagi-sama, Enjou-sama, Takamichi-san,” I forced a smile and greeted. I intend to break the ice, or something like that but my voice was squeakier that I thought.

For some reason, Kaburagi and Enjou were gazing at me with a strange look. Why!?

And Wakaba-chan, why are you moving your lips so oddly like that? Huh? My arm?

I followed her eyes, and found myself staring at the linked arms of me and Fellow Stalking Horse. But when…?

It must’ve been when I happily chatted with him a while ago. And Fellow Stalking Horse was probably polite enough to just go with it.

Ah, wait.

Why should I feel guilty about this? Wakaba-chan aside, Kaburagi and Enjou had nothing to do with me, since we’re acquaintances at most. Since when did my matter become their business!?

Hmmm…

“Is there something you need from me, Kaburagi-sama?” I asked.

I thought Kaburagi would at least avoid me for a few days more after that episode, but I suppose not.

Between the three, the one who likes to push his unwanted business upon me would be this guy. Enjou is polite enough not to, but I couldn’t deny that my troubles also came from him. I mean, this pair of friends tend to be a set who likes to threw their problems at me.

I didn’t accidentally spoke my thoughts out loud just now, did I? But Fellow Stalking Horse didn’t look at me strangely, so that’s most likely not it.

In any case, I really need bring Fellow Stalking Horse out of here. I mean, as if seeing the two together wasn’t enough, they were wearing matching clothes while holding hands.

Just by looking at the familiar brand logo, I already knew whose stupid idea was this.

Was he trying to make a claim? That’s Wakaba-chan was his girlfriend? How boorish.

Speaking of which, Fellow Stalking Horse was calmer than I thought. I thought his eyes would stay a little at his love rival and the love of his heart, but he seemed to not care about it that much. It looked like he was lost in thought.

Was it just my imagination?

When I asked that, Kaburagi looked at me blankly. Huh? Earth to Kaburagi?

“Ah, no, Kisshouin-san. Masaya wanted to ask if you’re willing to go with us to see the results. You haven’t go there yet, have you?” Enjou said with an archaic smile.

Well, I haven’t, but…

“I already made some promises with my friends, so.”

Going with the three of you together, wasn’t this just bringing trouble upon myself?

Are you not aware of the rumors that’s been spreading around for a while now!?

“With Mizusaki?”

“Eh?”

Why Fellow Stalking Horse?

Now that I think of it, I’m with the former Student Council President, who known to be enemies with the Pivoine. Not to mention that he is Kaburagi’s official love rival and all.

Am I being suspected of colluding with the enemy!?

Once again, I didn’t really see why it’s any of their business, to begin with.

I couldn’t simply leave Fellow Stalking Horse like this either. Between Kaburagi, Enjou and Fellow Stalking Horse, I like the latter better after all.

Unfortunately, Fellow Stalking Horse backed down first.

He probably sensed my hesitation since he gazed at me for a while before saying,

“…That’s not it. I’ll get going first, Kisshouin.” With that, he gently pried off my hands and started to walked away.

Fellow Stalking Horse…

It must’ve hurt him so much, to see the girl he liked all this time holding hands with a love rival right in front of him…

And due to his regards to me, his chief, he even willingly stepped down rather than confronting Kaburagi and Enjou.

“Kisshouin-san.”

…If, if it was the usual Kisshouin Reika who cared for her status at school, I would just let it be and meekly follow Kaburagi and Enjou, like all the other times.

But I’ll become a university student soon.

If I continued to live in fear like this, then what about in the future?

Should I just cater to Kaburagi and Enjou’s wish, while disregarding my own?

.

.

.

I don’t want that….

I looked at the back of my vice chief, plucking some courage. Before he could get any farther, I shouted,

“Wait, Mizusaki-kun!”

And trotted over to his side.

Fellow Stalking Horse stared at me questioningly, since his sleeve was grabbed by me, but he didn’t make any move to separate us.

He was waiting for my explanation.

Before I knew it, I pulled him further away from the other three, ignoring their surprised looks.

“Huh? Kisshouin?”

I raised my head, and our eyes met.

“Mizusaki-kun, let’s…”

I grabbed his sleeve even tighter. Satomi-kun’s words before kept repeating in my mind. And before I knew it, the words are already coming out of my mouth.

“Let’s go out, after we received the results. The restaurant that Tomoe-senpai said, l’m quite familiar with the area. We, let’s go there first after this, and spend our time there until Tomoe-senpai arrived.”

For my vice chief, I didn’t have that much power to help him, so I could only accompany him like this to cheer him up.

I’m not sure if it’s due to guilt, pity or pure comradeship between us.

But I know I can’t let him stay like this.

After all, Fellow Stalking Horse was one of the characters in the manga that I had no problem associating with from the very beginning.

We may have our disagreements before, but I’d like to believe that we’re friends now.

It won’t do to leave him like this.

That’s why…

“Will you wait for me?”

Fellow Stalking Horse paused slightly.

For some reason, his eyes were staring intensely at my own. Then…

“…I think I understand now.”

…Huh? What is he…

Then, I felt a hand gently knocked on my head. When I looked up, Fellow Stalking Horse was smiling.

For some reason, I had the impression that the smile he had was similar to the one I saw from Tomoe-senpai.

The smile that reassure you that everything was alright.

The smile that calm you down the moment you gazed at it.

And…

“Sure. I’ll wait.”

.

.

.

The smile that makes me fall for him in the first place.

***

Haaaah, I’m tired.

Due to my unwanted companions, my initial plan of keeping a low profile went down the drain. As soon as we arrived, people were already looking and pointing at Kaburagi and Enjou. I could spot some Zuiran students among them but there were also non-Zuiran students as well.

Honestly, these people are too eye-catching for their own good.

The only good thing about their presence was the fact that everyone stepped back and make some way for us.

Hmmm, several girls were glaring at Wakaba-chan, it seems.

Not that I blame them, seeing as how Kaburagi casually placing his arm around her shoulders and all.

That thoughtless moron.

Anyhow, as the three of the top 5 rank of Zuiran, it didn’t take long before they found their names on the board. However, compared to the two who were not even surprised, Wakaba-chan’s reaction was more sincere.

“I got it,” she exclaimed with a smile.

Good for you, Wakaba-chan!

Wait, I haven’t checked mine yet!

As I was about to search for my number however, someone snatched the paper on my hand. It was Satomi-kun.

“…1978? Let me see…” My fellow rep looked up the board, before exclaiming,

“Ah, there’s your number, Kisshouin-san,” and smiled brightly.

“…Although you come so rudely like this, I’ll accept your regards, Satomi-kun. What about you?”

Seeing Satomi-kun being relaxed enough to bother me at this time, I could already guess anyhow.

“I passed, of course.”

“Well, congratulations to you then, Satomi-kun.”

Though unexpected, Satomi-kun’s presence is very welcoming, since I did wish to avoid people lumping me up with those two.

So I quietly pulled Satomi-kun away from conspicuous spot and we began chatting. Apparently, Satomi-kun was about to go home after seeing his results, before he saw us.

“You seem like a cat on a hot tin roof, Kisshouin-san. Your head kept looking at anything but the board.” And as my fellow rep, he just couldn’t leave me be.

…While I’m grateful, I would really appreciate it if you use another idiom, Satomi-kun.

And I’m looking at my surroundings!

Being the person that I am, I simply couldn’t put up enough confidence to be the first one to look at my results. I need others to do that…

But I didn’t expect for my companions to be those three!

How the heck am I supposed to feel reassured!?

Comparing my results with them, that’s like the difference between heaven and earth…

Anyhow, why does my back feels cold all of a sudden?

“…Satomi-kun? Would you mind taking a peek on what’s behind me?”

“Eh? So suddenly?” He was surprised, but did as I said.

“…Don’t make it that obvious.”

“Yes, yes…” And I felt him froze.

“Did you see it?”

“…Yeah…”

So what is it?

“…Personally, I think it’s best for you just run away from here as fast as possible, Kisshouin-san.”

“Huh?” But then a voice rang out from behind.

“Did you pass, Kisshouin?” It was Kaburagi.

Aside from him, Enjou and Wakaba-chan also made their way to this direction.

“Ah yes, I did.”

“Oh, congratulations then.” Since Kaburagi was courteous enough to congratulate me, I did the same, though he looked totally unconcerned.

When Enjou and Wakaba-chan came, they too congratulate me.

Thank you very much.

I didn’t do as well as the three of you, but still, thank you.

Anyway, for some reason, we began to move to another spot, as they began to chat about their activities later on, to celebrate the occasion.

Satomi-kun was all too happy to make himself scarce, but I held his arms and pulled him with me.

You’re not leaving me for the second time.

Why don’t we go down together this time, Satomi-kun? What do they call it? ‘For better, for worse, in sickness, in health, for richer, for poorer?’

You dare to claim that you didn’t remember our oaths when we became class reps?

Huh? We didn’t do those? Oh, that doesn’t matter.

I’m telling you this now, but struggle is futile.

Try asking Kenmari Dainagon, if you want.

Kaburagi rose his brows on both of us, but made no comment. I could feel the suspicion from his expression though.

From the conversations, I could tell that they’re planning to go to a famous amusement park located in another prefecture since according to Kaburagi, the winter illumination there is quite famous among couples.

Of course, he didn’t say it in front of Wakaba-chan. He whispered to me while the other two were distracted.

It’s one of his surprise, as he put it.

Apparently, he wanted my advice on that.

But hearing the process for his grand plan from Kaburagi himself, I got a feeling that he has yet to start any lesson from the opposing village.

Being honest, that seem like a marriage proposal, than anything else.

Tsk, tsk.

He even had another handmade jewelry, made from scratch with their initials as a gift to Wakaba-chan.

“Don’t tell me it’s a ring.”

“A bracelet. Anyway, I’m planning on getting her a handmade ring for the marriage proposal.”

And then he proudly told me about having Wakaba-chan wear all of his handmade gifts when she finally becomes his wife.

Which unfortunately, include the necklace he gave her.

The one that was now in Wakaba-chan’s sister, Nao-chan’s hand.

“…I see.”

Seeing him all delighted like that, I couldn’t possibly bear to ruin his parade.

Speaking of which…

“By the way, Kaburagi-sama. Wouldn’t it be weird if you three went to the amusement park on your own?”

Kaburagi and Wakaba-chan are a couple, so it’s not that odd but what about Enjou?

Hearing that, Kaburagi stared at me with a quizzical expression. But why!? I thought about asking him that, but his next statement shook me off.

“What do you mean by us three? You’ll be coming too, Kisshouin.”

.

.

.

HUH!?

“Why me!?”

The heck!?

WHY DIDN’T I HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT THIS!?

According to Kaburagi, since we always went out together, he thought I’ll be open for another outing.

SAYS WHO!?

Just because I’m single, that didn’t mean I have no one to spend my time with! I have, in fact!

With the magnificent Tomoe-senpai!

Who is a thousand times better than you!

I already spent a lot of effort to convince Tomoe-senpai to bring me along. As if I would allow you to ruin all my plans!

“Ah, forgive me Kaburagi-sama but I have another appointment today.”

“Huh? You do?” To my irritation, that Kaburagi actually had the gall to looked surprised while saying so.

What’s with that degree of suspicion?

You thought I had nothing better to do, just because I’m single!?

While I was busy cursing Kaburagi in my mind, Wakaba-chan and Enjou approached us.

“So when will we depart, Masaya?”

“Huh? Oh, right after this.” Then, pointing to me, he added, “Kisshouin won’t be going, so it’ll only be the three of us.”

The two of them quickly turned their heads to look at me.

“You won’t be going, Kisshouin-san?”

To Wakaba-chan enquiry, I replied,

“Ah, yes. I already have a prior engagement with others.”

“Is it that urgent?”

“…Yes, Enjou-sama.”

Between Tomoe-senpai and the two of you, the former is certainly more important.

You can give me that suspicious smile all you want, but I won’t go.

You should try to become a third wheel once in a while, like how I used to.

Enjoy the feeling of being a member of Forever Alone villager, Enjou.

But the next heir of the Casanova Village Chief had a secret weapon in store.

“Even if I brought along Yukino with us?”

Huh? Yukino-kun?

I didn’t remember Kaburagi mentioning anything about that. In fact, Kaburagi himself looked more surprised, rather than anything.

“My, Yukino-kun?” I have to admit, I was a little tempted when hearing the angel’s name, but my promise with Tomoe-senpai and Fellow Stalking Horse takes precedence.

Not to mention the smile on Enjou’s face reeks of trap.

I’d be an idiot to fall for that.

“Please send him my apologies, Enjou-sama. I already have a prior engagement with someone, so I couldn’t possibly join you. I’ll make the time for the kids at another date, so please tell him that as well.”

And with a smile, I quickly left.

Then,

“…Can I go now, Kisshouin-san?”

“Eh? Satomi-kun? What are you doing here?”

“…You’re asking me that now?”

Anyway, Satomi-kun was kind enough to escort me to the meeting place, where Fellow Stalking Horse was waiting.

When he saw Fellow Stalking Horse, Satomi-kun’s eyes blinked rapidly as he looked at both of us in surprise.

I could hear an “Ehhhh…” from his expression.

Fellow Stalking Horse greeted him and they chatted a bit about the results. I took my chance to order a drink from the café.

But Satomi-kun seemed odd compared to usual.

He kept looking at Fellow Stalking Horse and I back to back while grinning from ear to ear.

You’re kind of scary right now, Satomi-kun.

When I offered to buy him a drink for all the troubles I’ve caused him a moment ago, Satomi-kun immediately stood up, saying,

“No, no, It’s fine. It wouldn’t do to bother you two, so I’ll be going now.”

And flee just like that.

Fellow Stalking Horse and I looked at each other, and then at the door.

“…”

“…”

…You know, I’m pretty sure I didn’t see him running that fast during the Sport Festival.

Not to mention, that scandalous expression on his face...

.

.

.

You know, despite how he looks, I really trust Satomi-kun with all my heart.

But still...

I've a bad feeling about this.

Really.

Notes:

There's a few obstacles I noticed when writing this fic.

Firstly, I'll admit, I'm very bad at writing romance so I wish to apologize if this fic didn't meet your expectation. I tried reading many novels and manga to get the feeling of high schoolers in love, and most of them was not my kind of romance. Secondly, for some reason writing Mizusaki is harder than I previously thought, compared to Satomi. I suppose I didn't exactly grasp his personality well since he only appear once in a while. I wanted to make a six part one shot for this fic, so my current knowledge is definitely not enough.

Hence, I would like to know what you think of Mizusaki as a character, or maybe if compared to someone like Kaburagi and Enjou, as well as how Mizurei would fare as a couple. Just your honest opinion/analysis of them. I personally think he's the best when it comes to domestic life with Reika, and their relationship later on would be extremely hilarious, what with Reika's craziness and him dealing with the aftermath.

Anyway, I'm not sure if I've express it enough but thank you for reading! Not just this fic, but all the other fics I wrote. I really appreciate it.
