Chapter 1: Devastated
Summary:
Prince Leonardo and his wife, Mona are trying to have a baby and are told the chances of that are slim. Raphael and Donnie are Omegas and dating, but Donnie breaks up with him, because Omegas have no rights and can only date Alphas. Donnie says they will have better futures with Alphas and his parents have agreed to let him marry one.
Raphael learns that his parents are drowning in debt and in order to recover from it, they tell Raphael to go to the king's concubine choosing ceremony. If Raphael is chosen, all their money troubles are over. Raphael is forced to agree.

Mona is 24
Mikey’s 23
Leo’s 19
Donnie’s 16
Raphael’s 15
In the Hamato Kingdom, Mona Lisa was sitting at the banquet table with her husband, Prince Leonardo and his parents, King Hoshi and Queen Laiko. Prince Leo and his parents were talking animatedly about the Omega selection ceremony the next day. It took place annually and the king chose one to be his concubine. He currently had four wives and nineteen concubines.
“I can’t wait for the ceremony,” sixty-four-year-old King Hoshi said. “The choices seem to be lovelier every year. Choosing one is tough. Maybe I’ll choose two this year to be different. What about you, son? Will you take an Omega this year?”
“No. I’m happy with Mona and the others, Dad. They're more than enough for me and I love them.”
“Mona is still not with child. You need to consider taking an Omega. You can always pass off the child as yours and Mona’s. No one would know.”
“We would know and I find that idea revolting,” Leo said as he took Mona’s hand. “A child will happen when the Good Being wishes so, Dad.”
“You’ve been married three years, Leonardo and there is still no child. People are starting to talk and wondering if she is barren.”
“Mona isn’t barren. It’ll happen. Excuse us. We have a meeting we need to attend. We’ll see you later,” Leo said as he got up and then offered his hand to Mona.
Mona had been fighting back tears as she listened to the conversation that had occurred since she and Leo had married three years earlier. She desperately wanted to give Leo a child. His other two wives had each given him a daughter, but the girls were not allowed to rule. Only a male could. Mona wished she could provide Leo with a son. Leo’s other wives also could not bear any more children, as both their pregnancies had been high risk and it was deemed life threatening for them to have more. If Leo didn't have any sons, he might have to abdicate when his father died, so his cousin, who had three sons, could reign.
Mona stood, took Leo’s hand and they headed to their appointment to receive the results of their tests.
XXXX
“What’s the verdict?” Leo asked as he gently squeezed an anxious Mona’s hand.
“Your Highness,” Dr. Matsu, their OB/GYN, who was dark haired and brown eyed said as he adjusted his glasses, which had slipped down his nose. “It’s not good. The chances of you having children are slim at best. Adoption and IVF are your best options.”
“I knew it! I can’t give him a child,” Mona wailed as tears rolled down her cheeks.
“It’s going to be okay, my love,” Leo said. “We will have a child. There are…”
“We can’t adopt, because only blood children can be heirs and IV isn’t a guarantee! I can’t deal with this!”
“Mona, please. Let’s try, my love. Some couples have been lucky. That could happen to us. Please.”
“I don’t know…”
“All is not lost, Your Highness,” Dr. Matsu said. “I know many couples who battled to conceive and they went the IV route. They’re now proud parents.”
“I’m willing to try,” Mona said. “I really want to be a mother. All my friends are and I feel like the odd one out, you know.”
“Great. Let me tell you all about what it’ll entail.” He did so and then said, "It’s a lengthy process, but it really is your best shot at parenthood.”
“I’m on board,” Leo said.
“I am too,” Mona said. “Do we start now?”
“Uh huh,” Dr. Matsu said. “I recommend you use an ovulation predictor kit. I have one here and I’ll explain what needs to be done. He did so and added, “In order for it to be effective, you’ll need to have sex every day.” He handed the kit to Mona. “Come see me when you’re ovulating and we’ll take the next step.”
“I’ll do it,” Mona said. “I hope it works. I know some couples go through multiple cycles and still don’t have a kid. It’s so stressful that it tears couples apart. I don’t want that to happen to my husband and me.”
“Our love is rock solid, love. You don’t have to worry,” Leo said as he squeezed her hand. “Nothing will break us apart.”
Mona smiled lovingly at Leo and said, “Thank you, Doctor. We’ll see you soon.”
“If you think of any further questions, Your Highnesses,” Dr. Matsu said as he stood and extended a hand. “Please call me or come see me.”
“We will. Thank you, Doctor,” Leo said as he stood and then shook Dr. Matsu’s hand.
Mona stood, shook Dr. Matsu’s hand and she and Leo left the room.
Leo and Mona then left the building, climbed into their black stretch limousine and Leo told their driver to take them home.
Mona thought about the IVF procedure.
I hope it's a success. Even though Leo says he loves me and that our love is rock solid, I fear that my inability to provide him with a son will make him either take a new wife or a concubin. Whatever he does, he'll blame me for not having a son and we will end. It sounds silly, but that's happened to other marriages. I don't want it to happen to us. Oh, please let me fall pregnant. I know I would be an amazing mother.
XXXX
A frustrated Agaki Aito cursed when he checked his online bank account and saw that he was deep in overdraft and debt. He didn’t know how he'd recover from it, because his construction business wasn’t doing well. His wife and his youngest son, Raphael were totally reliant on him. Thankfully, he didn’t have to worry about his eldest son, Michelangelo, who had a thriving gardening business and could take care of himself. Maybe he could ask him for money to…
No. I can’t ask him. He and Kiwa will soon be parents and need all the money for their child. I’ll find another solution.
Mei, Aito’s wife entered the room and seeing how downcast he was said, “What’s wrong, love?”
“We’re in debt and overdraft,” Aito said. “I don’t know what we’re going to do.”
“I have a solution. King Hoshi has a ceremony each year when he chooses an Omega to be his concubine. If Raphael is chosen, we’re financially set for life and Raphael will never have to worry about a thing. All his needs will be taken care of.”
“So, you’re suggesting offering our son to that lecherous old man? That’s repulsive,” Aito said angrily.
“It is, but being an Omega, Raphael doesn’t have many prospects with the new laws that were passed. He can’t work, go to university or even drive a car. Only Alphas can. As his mother and an Omega, it hurts me greatly and I do not like the idea of him being with that old man either, but it honestly is the best solution, Aito. The ceremony is tomorrow night.”
“Raphael will refuse.”
“He has no choice. We will tell him when he returns from school.”
“I don’t like it, but I guess you’re right. It’s sad, because he’s such a bright boy and deserves way better. I hope the law changes and Raphael will have the freedom to do what he wants.”
XXXX
Just turned fifteen-year-old emerald eyed and kelly green skinned Raphael was eating ice cream at his favorite café with Donnie, who was also an Omega. In the Hamato Kingdom, Omegas were forbidden to be with one another, but no one knew that he and Don were an item, because they’d kept it a secret and had managed to do so for six months by discreetly meeting at places no one who knew them would frequent.
“So, what do you wanna do tomorrow?” Raphael asked.
Sixteen-year-old Daigo Donnie set down his spoon and said, “There’s no easy way to tell you this, Raph. I’ve…”
“You’ve what?”
Donnie sucked in a deep breath and said, “I’m moving and I’m getting married. The deal’s done and I leave tomorrow. I’m sorry. I should have told you sooner.”
Feeling like his world had crumbled and his heart had shattered, Raphael placed a hand over his heart and said in a broken voice, “How long have you known?”
“Two weeks. I wanted to tell you, but I didn’t know how. I’m sorry. I love you and I’ll always treasure the moments we shared and hold you in my heart.”
“Empty words,” Raphael snapped. “If you loved me, you'd have said no, told me sooner and we could have run away and…”
“Running away’s pointless, as we would have been found. Both us of have bleak futures with our Omega statuses, so when this extremely wealthy guy asked my parents if I'd consent to being his spouse, my parents thought that was a great idea. I agreed when I met him. I’ll be taken care of and I can still do my lab experiments. I can have children. You and I wouldn’t have been able to. He’s a really nice guy. If things were different and one of us was an Alpha… I don’t want to hurt you, but I have to think of my future, Raph. You need to do the same. Find a cool guy to settle down with, have a family and be taken care of…”
Raphael had heard enough. Hurt, fury and grief flashed on his face as he picked up the table next to him and threw it. It narrowly missed a passing waiter and crashed into a wall.
The laws might have changed again and we could have been together publicly, but Donnie didn't love me enough to wait. He accepted the first proposal he got and dumped me. Fucking jerk. I really loved him. I feel like I can't breathe. It hurts so much. Love isn't supposed to.
Security approached Raphael and tried to grab him, but he shoved them away and said, “No need. I’m going. I loved you, Donnie, but I guess you never loved me, as you accepted the first proposal you got and never fought for our love. I’m not gonna offer myself as a bedmate, so my needs can be taken care of. I’m not that desperate or pathetic. I can take care of myself. Goodbye, Donnie. Have a nice life,” Raphael yelled and stomped out of the café.
A shocked and heartbroken Donnie looked down at his coffee.
I'm sorry, Raph. I didn't want to do this, but our kind has no real prospects and I have to think of the bigger picture. We would never have had a future together the way we wanted. I hope you find someone who'll make you happy and give you all the love you deserve. I'll always miss you and I hope as time passes that you won't hate me anymore.
XXXX
A devastated Raphael arrived home. All he wanted to do was curl up on his bed, be left alone and sleep for a thousand years. Nothing mattered now that he and Donnie had broken up and the void Donnie had left would never be filled.
My precious Donnie's gone. We were so good together and inseparable. How am I gonna cope without him? I thought we'd be together forever. Yeah, we couldn't have kids, but we thought that maybe we could adopt and... How could Donnie do this to me? How could he offer himself to someone he doesn't love? Yeah, he'll be taken care of, but isn't love more important? I could never do that. I know I'm an Omega and I don't have many prospects, but I could never sell myself like that and my parents would never make me either. They love me too much.
Mei had had heard the front door open and close and said as she entered the living room, “Hey, honey. How was your day?”
“Fine,” Raphael said.
“How did your history test go?”
“Don’t know.”
“And your math test?”
“Got an A+,” Raphael said as he withdrew the test paper from his shoulder bag and handed it to his mom.
“Well done, my angel,” Mei said and kissed his cheek. “I’m incredibly proud of you. I’ll make your favorite meal to celebrate. You’re such a smart boy.”
“It’s just a test…” Raphael said dismissively.
“It isn’t. Let’s show your dad,” Mei said and led a protesting Raphael to the kitchen.
XXXX
“Look what our boy achieved,” Mei said as she handed Aito the test paper.
“An A+. That’s fabulous, son,” Aito said. “I’m so proud of you.” Aito rarely praised his children, so his words meant the world to them.
Raphael puffed out his plastron with pride and his eyes shone with happiness as he said, “Thanks, Dad. Can I go now? I got….”
“No. Your mom and I need to discuss something with you. Please take a seat.”
“You aren’t sick, are you?” Raphael said anxiously as he plonked down onto a seat.
“No, honey,” Mei said as she sat down. “None of us are. It’s to do with your future.”
“What about it?” Raphael asked.
“We’re getting older and we... We’re in overdraft and debt, Raphael, and your dad’s business isn’t doing well, but our main concern is your future. It’s bleak at best. Surely, you know that.”
“So, one day the laws will change and I’ll be able to get a job. In the meantime…” Raphael said, having a sinking feeling about what they were going to say next.
“The laws won't change anytime soon, son,” Aito said. “And I really hate to say this, but your best prospect is to find someone wealthy who can care for you. I wish you could go to university and could pursue your dreams, but that isn’t allowed.”
“Right. My future is what you care about,” Raphael said heatedly as his eyes blazed. “Let’s be honest here. You’ll get money for life from that person for giving me to him. That’s what matters, not me. You don’t care that I’m being treated like a mere business deal. What about my happiness and what I want? Doesn’t that matter? Next, you’ll tell me that you already promised me to someone.”
“Your happiness matters, son, but we have to be practical and realistic. You have zero prospects. Do you frigging understand?”
“You’re selling me like I’m a piece of meat. I won’t do it!” Raphael raged and stood up.
“So, you don’t care that we’re drowning in debt? You’re being selfish, Raphael!”
“I’m selfish? You’re basically selling your kid for money! Don’t you get that? Why can’t you ask Mikey for help?”
“He’s got a lot on his plate. Raphael, look, it won’t be so bad. You'll...”
“Won’t be so bad? Right. I won’t do it!” Raphael roared.
“You’ll do it. Our word is law! You owe us for all we’ve done for you. Come on, son. Help your parents. This is the only way.”
“I hate you!” Raphael snarled as his green eyes flashed. “I thought you loved me, but you wanna give me away, so you can be financially stable. It’s got nothing to do with my future. How'd you feel if your parents sprang this on you?”
“Raphael,” Mei said as she placed a hand on his arm. “Please. We’ve never asked you for anything before. It might not be forever. Your dad and I could…”
“Save it,” Raphael hissed as he folded his arms. “You have no idea what you’re asking me. My freedom, so you can be financially stable and… It makes me sick that you could do this to me, your son, whom you’re supposed to love. That being said and despite how furious and disgusted I am with you two, I don’t want you to be in debt and I still love you. I’ll do it. Who is the geezer you wanna marry me off to?”
“The king,” Aito said. “The Omega choosing ceremony is tomorrow night. Catch his eye and he might choose you.”
“That old, creepy, lecherous, disgusting man?” Raphael yelled. “Really? I’m gonna barf.”
“He is all those things, but he is wealthy and would provide you with all you need.”
“I’d rather his son if I had to choose. He’s also horrid, but at least he isn’t ancient.”
“His son isn’t on the cards. Tomorrow, you’ll wear your finest kimono to the ceremony.”
“How does this ceremony work?”
“You’re all paraded in front of the king. He only chooses one, so you have to look fetching and alluring to stand a real chance. Then there’s a binding ceremony when he gives jewelry to his Omega. Later that night, the deal is really sealed when…”
Raphael felt bile rise in his throat at the thought of mating with the ancient gruesome-looking king and vomited on the floor.
I'm gonna lose my virginity to that vile man, be his concubine and have his kids. That isn't what I had planned. No. I wanted to travel and then to settle down, be a farmer and get married to the person of my choice and someone I loved. I don't wanna do this, but if I don't, my parents will still be in debt. They can't ask Mikey. He's dealing with a lot and doesn't need the extra pressure. I'll do it, but I'll hate every second and I'll never love that old bastard. Maybe I'll get lucky and he'll die before we've mated. Then I'll get his son. That would be more preferable, but I won't love him either. My heart belongs to Donnie, even though he has hurt me and I could never love anyone else.
“Raph,” Mei said, concern in her eyes. “Are you okay?”
“No. I’m not,” Raphael replied testily. “But who cares, right? You’ll get money for life if I’m chosen and I get to be that despicable man’s bedmate. A win for us all, huh? Not. On that gross note, I’m going to bed. I don’t want dinner. Don’t bother!”
Raphael stalked out of the room and went to his room.
XXXX
Raphael turned on his laptop and did a search on the Royal Family. He soon found his possible future mate and wrinkled his nose in revulsion as he studied him.
Look at him. He's super old, has warts on his face, is short and fat and he's known for being cruel to his wives and concubines. How can my parents be okay with me being with him? His son at least isn't hideous and he's smiling. He has stunning blue eyes too. I don't want this. I wish there was another way to help my parents or at least to marry me off to someone less grotesque and who's closer to my age. Oh, Donnie, I miss you. I wish you'd come back and the two of us could run away and make a life elsewhere in a kingdom where two Omegas can be together. Tears rolled down his face as he reflected on the wonderful times he and Donnie had shared. I love you, Donnie. I always will and no one else will ever have my heart.

Chapter Text
Raphael woke up at 7 a.m. the next day and dread pooled in his stomach at the thought of what would occur that day.
Today's the day I'm maybe gonna be bonded to the gross king. The thought of being with him makes me wanna puke. I wish there was another solution to the financial problems. He reached for his phone on his nightstand that he’d left there when he’d gone to bed and checked his messages. Donnie and he always texted each other in the mornings before school and on weekends to make plans, but there was nothing from him, which sent home the message that he and Donnie were really done. Maybe I should call Donnie and beg him to change his mind and to be with me. I don't want us to be over.
Raphael was about to dial Donnie’s number when there was a knock on his door and he heard his mom’s voice.
“Raphael, it’s time for breakfast and then we need to get you ready. We leave for the palace at eight.”
“The frigging ceremony’s only this evening. What’s the hurry?” Raphael asked.
“We would like to leave early to avoid the traffic and also, the Omegas are allowed to spend the day at the palace and to use the facilities to preen themselves for the evening.”
“Preening? I’m not a chick and I’m fine as I am! I’m not gonna…”
“Get your butt downstairs now!” Mei said in a tone that brooked no disobedience.
“Yes, Mom,” Raphael muttered and climbed out of bed. “This day is gonna suck. Who am I kidding? My life is gonna suck and there’s nothing I can do to change it.”
Raphael threw on jeans and a T-shirt and went to the kitchen.
XXXX
Breakfast was a hurried affair. Then Raphael showered and donned the red silk kimono that Aito’s sister had given him for Christmas the previous year. He loathed the outfit, which made him feel like a girl and the thought of spending all day glamming himself up for the creepy king was nauseating. He’d refuse and tell them he was fine as he was. He didn’t need perfume, essential oils, makeup or any other shit. He was a boy. Damn it.
“You look fabulous, Raphael,” Mei said. “The king will surely love you. Look at our boy, Aito. He’s all grown up.”
“Dashing,” Aito said. “You’re sure to capture the king’s heart.”
“Lucky me,” Raphael muttered. “What’s gonna happen to my studies?”
“You don’t need that anymore if the king picks you,” Aito said.
“So, all I’m gonna do is pop out babies and make the king happy? Doesn’t sound like much of a life. I’m smart. I could be doing more with my life and making a difference in the world.”
“I know, but we can’t change the laws, Raphael. I’m afraid that’s as good as you’ll get. You’ll adapt. Maybe if you’re really good, the king will let you read his books, so your mind doesn’t stagnate. Anyway, it’s time to go.”
“How are you okay with all of this? Don’t you at least feel some shame that you’re doing this?”
“Raphael, we need to go!”
“Answer me. How are you okay with the idea of that bastard knocking up your son and him being relegated to a breeding machine?”
Mei winced at Raphael’s words and said, “We try not to think…”
“Try not to think about it, huh?” Raphael said sarcastically. “Well, when you get your first paycheck, you think about what I went through for you to get it!”
“That’s enough!” Aito said. “We need to go. Stop stalling, Raphael, and get in the damn car.”
“Don’t you care, Dad?” Raphael asked.
“I do, but there is no other solution to our troubles and I can’t see another way for you to have a bright future.”
“Bright future? Being the king’s concubine and constantly having babies isn’t a bright future! It’s a nightmare. Have you heard the rumors about him abusing his wives and concubines?”
“You shouldn’t listen to gossip. Get in the car!”
Raphael knew he wasn’t going to get anywhere with his parents, so he stormed off to the car, climbed in and sulkily waited for his parents to join him.
They don't really care about me. All they want is money and if I give the king kids, they get more. I'm just a breeding vessel and all my dreams are ashes, especially if I'm chosen. My life is over and I'm only fifteen. I never had a chance to do what I wanted. How's that fair?
His parents soon joined him.
His father started the engine and began the short drive to the palace.
XXXX
They reached the palace gates ten minutes later and were stopped by security who queried their reasons for being there. After explaining that Raphael was going to participate in the Omega ceremony and after a quick search of their car for any narcotics or weapons, they were allowed to enter the grounds.
Aito parked a couple of minutes later and marveled at the palace architecture. It was over two hundred years old and was modeled on Buckingham Palace, because the king’s great x 3 grandmother had been in awe of it and wanted something similar. There were one hundred rooms and eighty bathrooms, which were beautifully decorated and luxurious. Only the best for the Royal Family.
“It’s something, son, huh?” Aito said. “Quite a change from our place. Don’t look glum, Raphael. You’ll love it here. You’ll have everything you want. You’re lucky.”
Raphael didn’t bother to answer him and climbed out. He gazed at the building and frowned.
It looks magnificent and opulent, but it's also my prison. Goodbye, freedom. Hello, rules, babies and boredom.
“Shall we go in?” Mei asked when she saw a bunch of other people dressed similarly to Raphael. “I think they’re also here for the ceremony. Let’s follow them.”
“Raphael, smile!” Aito ordered.
“Why?”
“Because I say so. Come along.”
Raphael and his parents followed the others to a doorway where they were stopped by more security. After getting clearance, they all went inside.
XXXX
“Wow!” Mei said as she stared around her. “Look how stunning this place is, Raphael and this is only a small room designated to the public. I love it. The décor is French. Look at that chandelier and those incredible paintings. That tapestry over there is beautiful!”
“Yeah. Just incredible,” Raphael said and rolled his eyes. He couldn’t care less about the décor. As far as he was concerned, it was still a prison and nothing could make him change his mind.
He, his parents and others were ushered into a huge room and told to wait.
“What now?” Raphael asked.
“It’s time for the preening to begin,” a girl said. “You’ll love it. It’s so much fun. We get the ultimate beauty treatment, which includes bathing, makeup, massages, manicures and pedicures.”
“I don’t need that. I’m a boy! You’ve done this before?”
“Oh. You’ll still have to have the treatment. It’s mandatory. Yeah. This is my third attempt to be his concubine, but I can’t next year, because I’ll be twenty then and too old. The king likes them young and twenty is the cut off age. How old are you?”
“Fifteen. That’s crazy. Twenty isn’t old. Why do you do this?”
“Same reason as you, I guess. Got no prospects and if I’m not chosen now, well, my life is bleak unless I find another rich Alpha. You’re young and a looker. The king will love you.”
“Hmm. Are the rumors about him abusing his wives and concubines true?”
A servant appeared before the girl could comment and told Raphael’s parents they could wait there while he and the other Omegas had their beauty treatments. Then the servant ushered the Omegas into the area where the treatments would commence.
XXXX
There was a gigantic tepid perfumed pool for them to wash in, which contained fish that would remove their dead skin cells.
Raphael had never been naked in front of anyone else before and he blushed as he discarded his kimono and then slipped into the water. The fish instantly began to nibble at his feet and he couldn’t help chuckling, because it was extremely ticklish.
He smelled the scented water as he washed himself all over and grimaced.
I smell like jasmine and girly shit. I hate it! What's next? Makeup? I refuse. There's no way they're gonna do that to me!
He was about to get out of the water when a servant appeared and said, “No. I haven’t cleaned your shell.”
"Fine," Raphael huffed and then stood quietly as the man scrubbed his shell with a brush and removed all the dirt. That soon done, it was polished with beeswax.
“Much better. Your shell was filthy and you stank before you bathed. That’s unacceptable and you clearly have no pride! Now you smell like jasmine, the king’s favorite scent. He’ll be pleased and you stand a better chance…”
“I didn’t stink. I smelled like a guy, which is what I am!” Raphael yelled as his temper ignited. “A masculine, Alpha…”
“Yawn. I’m not intimidated by your rage, Omega. Dress and go to that lady over there,” the man said and pointed at a woman.
“That’s not my name. It’s Raphael!”
“I don’t care what your name is and nor will I attempt to remember it. You’re just another Omega to me. Go now. I have other Omegas to see to!”
Raphael glared at him. What a dick. He dressed and went to the designated lady.
“He told me to see you,” Raphael said.
“Ah. Yes,” the woman said. “Take a seat. I’ll do your fingernails and toenails.”
“The hell you will! They’re fine as they are!” Raphael bellowed.
“Sit down now!” she screamed in a tone so vicious that he flinched and then sat down.
“Good,” she continued and then inspected his toenails. “They’re disgusting. Look how long they are. When last did you have them trimmed?”
“I’m a guy and…”
“That’s no excuse to let yourself look gross. Don’t you have any pride? You could poke someone’s eyes out with these. I’ll be right back.” She returned a few minutes later with a basin of warm and soapy water and put his feet into it. Then she inspected his nails. “You bite them. You’ll have to stop that. The king likes his concubines to look immaculate and nail biting is a no.”
“Whatever. What else does he like?”
“The list is long. You’ll learn in time. I think we should paint your nails orange. It’s the king’s favorite color.”
“No! Look, I’ve endured bathing, shell scrubbing and I smell like a girl. I’m gonna have my nails done. That’s enough. Please stop,” Raphael said and stared at her pleadingly.
“It’s mandatory, Omega.”
“Ugh. Then leave my face alone!”
“Oh, honey, orange lipstick will make your eyes pop out and go well with your skin color,” she said and smiled meanly.
“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?” Raphael said irritably.
“Very much. Be a good dear while I trim your nails. Then I’ll paint them orange.”
The woman cleaned, filed down and trimmed Raphael’s toenails and then painted two coats of orange nail polish onto them. That done, she turned her attention to his fingernails. She cleaned, filed down, trimmed them and then painted two coats of nail polish onto them. Then she turned her attention to his face. "It won’t take long, honey,” she said.
Raphael glared at his fingernails. Look at me. I'm dressed and beautified like a girl. It's degrading and emasculating and all to help my selfish parents. They could have called Mikey. Why put me through this? I don't deserve this and I certainly don't want it. It's hell and it's only gonna get worse.
Raphael had forced himself not to flinch when she’d applied the nail polish, but he battled when she told him to pucker up his lips and when she applied the lipstick. How he wished he could get out of there, but there was no going back now.
She applied pink blush to his cheeks and then said as she handed him a mirror, “That’s it, honey. Take a look at your improved self. I think you look cute.”
“I look repulsive,” Raphael snapped as he took the mirror and then stared at himself in horror. “It makes me look like a clown. I hate it!”
“I’ve been doing this job for thirty years and all the male Omegas say the same thing before the ceremony, but their tune changes when they’re picked. They’re happy, because all their needs are met and they don’t have to worry about money anymore. They do whatever is asked. You’ll be the same way, love. You’ll be happy to be his and you’ll do as you’re told, even if it’s to wear dresses.”
“I’ll never be happy and I’ll never love the king!”
“You’re feisty and strong willed, little one. That’ll change too. The king will make sure of it. I’m done. Go wait in the room over there,” she said and pointed to another room.
“What about my parents?”
“Little one, you’ll see them after the ceremony and you can go home if you’re not chosen. If you’re chosen, you’ll see them when the king says you can. That is all. Be off now.”
“When the king says I can? What about when I want to?” Raphael demanded.
“Concubines don't have rights. You do as you’re told and you’re grateful for any attention the king gives you. Go now. You’ll be called when the ceremony is about to begin.”
Raphael digested the news as he walked to the designated room.
No rights. I'll be a prisoner and at his mercy. Mom and Dad, when you get your cash, think of what I'll be enduring. You could have asked Mikey for help. I don't think you wanted to, because I think you knew you'd get more cash from the king and it'd be for life, so you jumped at this. You don't care that I could be abused and that I can't pursue my dreams. All that matters is that you'll be paid. I should have refused and run away. I agreed, because I love you. You don't love me. No one does. I'm all alone.
XXXX
Raphael waited in the room with the other Omegas until the clock struck six. They had been given sandwiches and water at three p.m. There were four hundred of them and each of them had a number pinned to their kimonos. Raphael was number twenty. The king would traditionally see all the Omegas, who'd be paraded in front of him and he'd speak to each of them for a few minutes, but he also didn’t have to see all of them. He could select which one he wanted and that was the end of the event.
A servant appeared and told them that the king was ready to see them. They were ushered into the formal sitting room, where they anxiously awaited their turns.
XXXX
The king sat on his golden throne and grinned as he studied the long line of Omegas. They looked stunning and he knew he'd have a hard time choosing.
Raphael saw the king and blanched.
He looked positively gruesome in his online photo. He's worse up close. Yuck. He must have at least six warts on his face and he's so fat. How can his wives and concubines stand him? I'm gonna puke.
It was soon Raphael’s turn. His stomach churned when the king’s eyes raked over his body approvingly. It made Raphael’s skin crawl and he had to force himself not to throw up.
He's studying me as if I'm something he wants to eat. I feel violated and sick. I hope he doesn't...
“Name?” King Hoshi asked.
“Raphael.”
“Age?”
“Fifteen.”
“Ah. Perfect,” Hoshi said and grinned. “I like them young and you’re gorgeous. I take it you’re a virgin. All the potential concubines are supposed to be.”
“Yes.”
“Not much of a talker, are you? That’s okay. I have my wives for that. Your job is to please me in bed and to give me brats. Are you virile?”
Raphael bristled at his words, but forced himself not to react and said, “I am fertile, Your Majesty.”
“That is good. You’re young, so I’m sure you’ll give me many babies. Any sexual experience at all?”
“No, Your Majesty.”
“I shall teach you everything I know, pet. I want him. This ceremony is over. The rest of you can leave. Servants, remove them. Raphael will stay with me.”
“W-what?” Raphael said in disbelief when he saw the servants remove the other Omegas from the room.
“I have chosen you. Come closer, Raphael, so I can see you better.”
“B-but…”
“No buts. You’re mine now. Do as you’re told!”
Raphael obeyed him and said, “You chose me. Why?”
“I liked the look of you and I did not want to look at anyone else. You’re stunning and I adore your eyes. They’re like green gems. I can’t wait to possess you body and soul,” King Hoshi said as he cupped Raphael’s cheek. “I will after the celebratory dinner and you’ll soon be gravid. I may be old, but I’m still virile. Haha.”
“What about my parents? Can I see them?” Raphael asked as he inwardly shuddered at the king’s words. He was chosen and soon he would be the king’s bedmate. There was no escaping it.
“No. We have lots of mating to do. You won’t have time. You’ll see them when I know you’re gravid. Until then, you’re completely mine!” King Hoshi said as he slipped a hand down the back of Raphael’s kimono and then squeezed his rump, which made him emit an unmanly squeak. The king chuckled and added, “Wow. That’s cute, Raphael. I love your little squawk and I can’t wait to hear the noises I’ll pull from you in bed. I hope you’re a screamer. I love that. Let’s go to dinner and I’ll introduce you to my son. He’s the only one joining us tonight.”
“I’m…”
“Such a shy thing, aren’t you? Good. I like them submissive and shy. It’s easier to train them then,” King Hoshi said as he took Raphael’s hand and slipped a ruby ring onto his ring finger. “This ring symbolizes our union.”
“Train?” Raphael asked in shock, wondering if he’d heard him right.
“That’s right. Train you to be the perfect bedmate. You’ll do everything I want without question, no matter how degrading or how perverted it is. I own you body and soul and there’s nothing you can do about it. If you try, you’ll never see your parents again and I could have them killed. Hmm. Come now. It won’t be so bad if you listen, Raphael,” King Hoshi said and led him to the formal dining room.
Raphael trembled at his words. Kill my parents? Train me? Sick! I've entered a living nightmare. Mom and Dad, I told you that the king is abusive, but you told me not to listen to rumors. Fuck. Being a concubine is one thing, but a beaten and submissive pet is another. I don't want this. I've never been petrified before. I am now. Please let a miracle happen and that vile man dies. I've heard that Prince Leonardo is terrible too, but if he inherits me when his dad dies, he wouldn't treat me so horribly, would he?
XXXX
Prince Leonardo was sitting at the table and engaged in a conversation with a travel agent on his phone. Hearing footsteps, he told them he’d call them back and ended the call. Glancing up, he saw who he guessed was his dad’s new concubine and his dad. His breath caught in his throat when he studied Raphael and he thought he was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen.
She's gorgeous and her eyes are mesmerizing. I could stare into them forever and never tire. Wow. Dad picked a real stunner, but she's wearing too much makeup. I don't like it. Poor thing looks miserable. I'll try to help her settle in and be a friend to her. If things were different, I'd have her in a heartbeat and give her all the love she deserves and more. I'm smitten with her at first sight. I've never felt that way about anyone, but I can't pursue her, because she's Dad's and off-limits. I also don't want a concubine and more wives. I have to ignore my feelings for her.
“This is Raphael, Leonardo,” King Hoshi said. “My new concubine. Raphael, this is my son, Prince Leonardo.”
“Oh,” Leonardo said as he stood. “A boy. Sorry. I thought… It’s lovely to meet you, Raphael.”
“Likewise, Your Highness,” Raphael said, while inwardly seething that Leo had thought he was a chick.
“Please sit down,” King Hoshi said and directed Raphael to a seat. He was about to sit down when his phone rang. Glancing at the number, he cursed. “I have an emergency that I need to tend to. I’ll fetch you when I’m done, pet and we can get better acquainted,” King Hoshi said with a wink and left the room.
“Yes, Your Majesty,” Raphael said, while inwardly trembling at his words. He knew the king meant they’d soon mate.
Leo smiled amiably and said, “How old are you, Raphael?”
“Fifteen.”
“That’s really young. Are you from around here?”
“Your dad likes them young,” Raphael said flatly, which made Leo bristle. “Yeah.”
“Um," Leo said, feeling uncomfortable and at a loss for words. He was glad when the servant appeared and brought the first course of parsnip soup. He smiled at the servant, thanked him and when he went away, said, “Raphael, I couldn’t help noticing that you looked downcast and…”
“Would you wanna be an old king’s concubine?” Raphael hissed and then clamped a hand over his mouth. He was talking to a prince and being totally disrespectful. Leonardo could be furious, tell his father and then Raphael would be severely punished.
Instead, Leo was amused and said, “You’re open and not afraid to speak your mind. I like that, but my father doesn’t. It' be wise to keep your opinions to yourself and to listen to him. He can be very strict.”
Raphael removed his hand from his mouth. “Leo, I’m not a wallflower and I’m not a submissive girl. That isn’t gonna happen. I’m a guy who has opinions and I’m not gonna be anyone’s pet!” Raphael snapped as his eyes blazed.
Leo chuckled and then said, “You’re feisty. I like that. Dad’s met his match. Leo, huh? No one calls me that. I like it and I love your attitude. You’re fascinating, Raphael. I take it your nickname’s Raph. Can I call you that? It’s such a shame…”
“I guess. What?”
“Nothing. Please eat. Do you go to school?”
“I did, but that’s done now, because all I’m gonna do is have babies and I don’t need that.”
“I can talk to my father and ask him to allow you to continue your studies.”
“You’d do that?” Raphael asked in astonishment.
“Of course. There’s more to life than just having children, Raph. You seem like a bright young guy and it would be a sin to let your mind stagnate.”
“Thank you. You seem very open minded, Leo. I’m shocked. I heard rumors that you were like your dad.”
“Ah. The good old rumor mill. I’m nothing like my father, Raph, and I’m sorry this life was chosen for you. I sense you’re unhappy and I’ll do my best to help you settle in. You can always talk to me.”
Raphael ate all of his soup and then said, “Why can’t I be yours? You sound kind and understanding and I’d be happier with you.”
“Because you’re Dad’s and off-limits,” Leo began. His phone rang. “I have to take this, Raph. I really enjoyed our conversation and you’re a delight. We’ll talk soon,” Leo said and left the room.
Raphael sighed. The prince seems like an okay guy and I like him. I wouldn't love him, because I'll only ever love Donnie. Only he has my heart, but I'd be happier with Leo than with his awful dad and life would be more bearable. Can't the old man croak and that happen?
The servants brought the rest of the courses: roast beef, veggies and all the trimmings and then chocolate cake.
Leo and the king hadn’t returned, so Raphael was all alone. He silently ate and thought about what would soon occur: mating and submission. Revulsion coursed through him and he had to force himself not to vomit.
King Hoshi appeared when Raphael had finished dessert and said, “Let’s go to my chambers. Did you like dinner, Raphael?”
“I did. Thank you, Your Majesty,” Raphael said as he stood up and went to him.
“Good. I’m in the mood for some fun,” King Hoshi said and took Raphael’s hand. “I have new toys that I think you’ll like.”
“Toys?” Raphael spluttered as he was led to the king’s chambers.
“Sex toys. I told you I was going to educate you. Don’t be scared. You’ll love everything. I promise, my little virgin.”
Raphael shuddered inwardly. He's gonna hurt me and I can't do nothing about it.
XXXX
Inside King Hoshi's bedroom, the monarch suddenly launched himself at Raphael and pushed him back onto the king-size bed. Ignoring a terrified Raphael’s squawks, he undressed him with one hand and pinned him down with the other.
Nude, vulnerable and knowing what was about to happen, Raphael whimpered. Tears rolled down his cheeks and dripped onto the bed.
“You’re exquisite,” King Hoshi said as he ogled Raphael and kneed his legs apart. The sight of his naked concubine made him drop down and his dick pressed up against Raphael’s hole, which made Raphael tremble.
“Please be gentle,” Raphael tearfully begged. “This is my first time.”
“Gentle is for pansies,” King Hoshi said and chuckled evilly. “I like it rough.”
King Hoshi lined his dick up at Raphael’s entrance and was about to thrust into him when he felt tight pressure across his chest, nauseous, dizzy and shortness of breath.
I'm having a heart attack. I have to get the doctor.
King Hoshi managed to sit up and said as he gasped for breath, “Call the doctor!” The agony in his chest intensified and as he clawed at his chest, his heart gave out and he fell forward onto Raphael. His eyes closed.
“What happened, Your Majesty?” Raphael said fearfully and when there was no reply, he realized what had happened. “He had a stroke or a heart attack and is either dead or unconscious. I have to get help.”
Raphael managed to move the obese king off himself and then got up and ran to the bedroom door. He opened it and then went in search of help.
XXXX
Raphael soon saw a servant, who was on her way to bed and said, “The king needs medical attention. Get the doctor!”
“What happened?”
“He was gasping for air and suddenly keeled over. I think he had a heart attack or a stroke and he isn’t moving.”
“I’ll get the doctor. Go wait in the bedroom. The doctor will want to ask you questions.”
Raphael nodded and returned to the bedroom.
XXXX
Raphael stared at the dead or unconscious king and said, “That was unexpected. Is he dead? What’s gonna happen to me?"
Notes:
A/N Is the king dead? What'll happen to Raphael now?
Thank you for all the kudos and comments. They mean the world to me.
Chapter 3: Leo's clause
Summary:
The cops question Leo and Raphael about the king's death. Leo tells Raphael that he's his now and realizing how miserable Raphael is, proposes that if Raphael doesn't love him in a year, he can leave and be reunited with Donnie. Raphael accepts. Leo tells Lotus, his first wife about Raphael and she's as mad as a snake and refuses to accept it. Leo sweetens the deal more and asks Raphael to be his husband. He can still leave in a year if he wants, but he'll have more rights and their children would be legitimate. Raphael agrees.

Chapter Text
Leo was in bed with his wife, Lotus Blossom when he heard a knock on the door and his personal adviser and confidante Tiger Claw say, “Your Highness, come quickly. Your father’s ill.”
“I’ll be there now, Tiger Claw,” Leo said as he rolled off his wife. “I have to go.”
“As usual,” Lotus said crossly. “I’m tired of a quickie here and there, Leonardo. I want more and to spend more time with you. So does Kimiko. Mona isn’t the only wife.”
“I promise I’ll do that,” Leo said as he donned his dressing gown and then kissed her cheek. “I’ll keep you informed about Father.”
Lotus watched her husband leave the room. Then she closed her eyes and went to sleep.
XXXX
Meanwhile, King Hoshi's bedroom door opened and two doctors and the female servant that Raphael had spoken to entered the room.
The doctors went to the king, crouched down, checked his pulse and when they found none, shook their heads sadly.
“He’s gone,” the one doctor said. “What happened, young lady?” he added as he glanced at Raphael, who'd donned his kimono and who was standing with his arms folded.
“I’m not a chick!” Raphael hissed as his green eyes blazed. “My name’s Raphael, his uh, concubine. He and I were about to, you know, when he keeled over.”
“I see. Did you kill him?”
“Why would I do that? I didn’t know him before today and I had no reason to want him dead. I bet he had many enemies. He wasn’t a good man from what I hear. You might wanna talk to those people. What’s gonna happen to me?”'
“There’ll be a police investigation,” the other doctor said. "Everyone, including you, will be questioned. King Hoshi didn’t have any health issues. I reckon this is a homicide, but we’ll only know the cause of death after an autopsy and toxicology tests, which could take several weeks. You’ll remain at the palace until the investigation has been completed.”
“Am I gonna go home to my parents then?”
“That’s up to Prince Leonardo, who’s now king. He decides what’ll happen to you.”
Just then, several police officers entered the room, cordoned it off as a crime scene and then began questioning the female servant and Raphael.
“I’m Detective Rogers. Young lady, what happened?” a burly, dark haired and eyed male cop asked as he looked at Raphael.
Raphael rolled his eyes skyward and said irritably, “I’m not a girl! My name’s Raphael. The king likes his concubines to dress as girls and to wear makeup and shit.”
“You’re his concubine?”
“That’s right, bright spark. I was chosen as his concubine from the hundreds of others today. Lucky me, huh?”
“Did you kill him?”
“I never met the guy before today.”
“Want to tell me the events of tonight?”
“I was chosen as his concubine. Then we had dinner and he keeled over in bed.”
“Was anyone else present at dinner?”
“His son.”
“Did King Hoshi act weird during dinner?”
“No.”
“Did you poison his drink? If you killed him, it’s best to come clean now before…”
“I didn’t poison his drink and I didn’t murder him in the bedroom!”
“Anyone who can vouch for you?”
“His son was with us at dinner and can vouch that I didn’t spike the king’s drink. He wasn’t present in the bedroom, but I didn’t kill the king. Why would I? I was his chosen concubine and I was gonna be spoiled rotten and have all I wanted. I wouldn’t have done anything to mess that up. You’re wasting time talking to me. You should focus on others in the palace and the king’s enemies if he had any. And before you ask, the only person I’ve talked to besides the king is his son. We weren’t in cahoots to kill the king, because I didn’t know Prince Leonardo before today either.”
“You seem to know what questions I was going to ask. That makes me think you do have something to do with King Hoshi’s death and are trying to throw me off.”
“I watch cop shows and I’m smart. For the last time, I didn’t kill the guy. Have you talked to his family? Maybe one of his wives and other concubines did it.”
“I’m not done with you here. Stop trying to deflect…”
“I’m done with you. I’ve told you everything I know. Wait. King Hoshi received a phone call at dinner and then told me that he had an emergency to attend to. He left and I only saw him again a while later. Prince Leonardo was with me for a while and then he also got a call and left. I was alone for the rest of the meal. I have no idea who called him.”
“So, it’s possible Prince Leonardo killed his father,” Rogers said and made notes.
“Leo would never do that. He’s an awesome and kind guy.”
“Leo, huh? That sounds cozy to me. You know what I think? I think you and Prince Leonardo were having an affair and one of you spiked the king’s drink with poison, so that you could be together. You met long before today and premeditated the event.”
“W-what?” Raphael said in shock, his eyes wide.
“Yep. It makes sense….”
“You’re fucking dumb! I didn’t know Prince Leonardo or the king before today and I had zero reason to kill the king!” Raphael yelled.
“That’s enough,” Leo said firmly as he entered the room with Tiger Claw. “Good evening, officers.”
“Leo, I’m so glad you’re here,” Raphael said. “These men are…”
“Quiet, Raphael,” Leo said sternly. “Please continue, officers.”
“Good evening, your Highness,” another male cop, who was in charge, said. “I’m Detective Chiba. We’re sorry to tell you that the King is dead and that we will have to conduct an investigation to establish the cause of death. This means we will have to talk to everyone who was in the palace today. This room is a crime scene and cordoned off. No one is permitted to enter it until the investigation has been concluded and everything in this room is evidence. My men will be posted here to see that protocol is followed.”
“Of course,” Leo said as he stared at his father’s prone body. Sadness and regret rippled though him at the fact that his father, the man he’d loved, respected and admired when he was younger had passed and whom he hadn’t been close to in recent times for various reasons, but now wasn’t the time for emotions, because he had to be practical. He could grieve in the privacy of his room later.
“Excellent. Then we’d like to take everyone down to the station for formal questioning. I’ll need a list of everyone who was present today.” Chiba mentally noted Leo’s lack of emotion. He knew people grieved differently, but the prince could still have showed some emotion. Perhaps he had something to do with his father’s grief and was mentally celebrating, because he was king now.
“I'll do my best to provide you with the information, but I can’t say who the Omegas were. There's no list. They just show up.”
“I see. Where were you this evening, Your Highness?”
Just then, the ME, James Ford arrived with his assistant. He greeted Leonardo and then placed the King Hoshi onto a gurney. “I am sorry for your loss, Your Highness,” Ford said.
“Thank you,” Leonardo said. “Please let me know the results of the autopsy.”
“I will,” Ford said and he and the assistant took the king away to be loaded into the ambulance and then to be taken to the morgue.
“I repeat,” Detective Chiba said. “Where were you this evening, Your Highness?”
“I had dinner with my father and his new concubine,” Leo said. “Then my father got a call and left the room. I chatted to Raphael for a while. Then I received a call and left to talk privately in my quarters.”
“Who called you?”
“My financial advisor, Eki David. You can check with him and I'm happy to give you my phone to check all my incoming and outgoing calls and texts. I've nothing to hide.”
“I will do that. Did you see your father after you went to your room?”
“I did not.”
“Where were your wives?”
“Probably in bed. It was late.”
“But you don’t know for sure.”
“I do not. I saw Lotus later on and I was with her when I was summoned here.”
“Where was your mother?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did your father have any enemies?”
“Of course. You know his reputation. I don’t know who they are. Dad didn’t discuss his private affairs much.”
“Are you having an affair with Raphael?”
“W-what?” Leo said in incredulity, his cobalt blue eyes wide.
“Are you and Raphael having an affair and that’s why you killed the king, so you could be together?”
“That’s insane. I never met Raphael before this evening and I had no reason to kill my father. We didn’t always see eye to eye, but I would never do that. I loved my father.”
“Did he have any problems with his wives and concubines?”
“How would I know that? Dad kept those matters to himself, but I do know that my mother was happy with him and loved him deeply. She would never do anything to hurt him.”
“She was okay with him having other wives and concubines?”
“It freed her up to follow her interests and to get some space. My father had an insatiable appetite, if you get my drift.”
“I see. Did you see him argue with his wives and concubines?”
“A couple times, but it was mostly about his parenting style. They wanted him to be more present and affectionate with the children. My father could be very distant. Detective, it is late. I am drained and I'd like to mourn my father. I'm happy to come down to the station in the morning to be formally questioned and I will ensure that everyone in the palace does the same thing, but please let me grieve for now.”
“Of course, Your Majesty. That is your title now, right?”
“It is.”
“I am leaving some of my men to ensure protocol is followed.”
“That's fine. I'll ensure that the staff supplies them with food and drink. May Raphael be excused too? Seeing his new love die was traumatic and he’s devastated. He needs rest.”
Chiba hadn’t got that impression from talking to Raphael. He’d thought Raphael was glad the king had croaked. “Of course, but I want him at the station in the morning.”
“He will be. Come along, Raphael.”
Leo, the female assistant, Tiger Claw and Raphael left the room.
Chiba watched them leave. I have a feeling that the new king's involved in his father's death and I'm convinced the concubine is too. I believe they were having an affair and plotted to kill the king, so that they could be together.
XXXX
Leo told the female assistant to go to her quarters. Then he instructed Tiger Claw to do the same thing.
Left alone with Raphael, Leo said, “It’s late and you need rest. Follow me.”
Raphael followed Leo down a long passage.
Leo stopped a few minutes later and said, “Here."
Then he opened the door and he and Raphael went inside.
XXXX
The room was as luxurious as the king’s, but it was more modern and had a laptop and a large CD player on a large desk in the corner. Crime fiction, self-help, philosophy, psychology, history and martial art books were on the bookshelves and Raphael saw a statue of a Persian cat on top of the bookshelf. The bed was king-size, Persian rugs were on the floor and the desk and closets were crafted of maple wood. There was also a large walk-in closet and a massive en suite bathroom with a spa bath, shower and toilet.
“You can stay here, Raphael,” Leo said. “I hope you’ll be comfortable. This room is part of my suite and I’m a few doors away. My wives have their own suites, so you won’t run into them.”
“Thanks. So, what’s gonna happen to me, Your Majesty?”
“You can call me Leo privately. I’m sorry I was abrupt earlier, but I had to answer their questions. That depends. Did you and my father copulate? I need you to be honest.”
“No. He wanted to and was about to. Then he died.”
“So, you’re still pure,” Leo said and heaved a sigh of relief.
“I am. Is that important?”
“Yes. If he’d claimed you, I would have had to send you away, because I don’t want my father’s conquests. The thought of that repulses me. That means his wives and concubines aren’t mine. My mother included. They can continue to stay here if they wish.”
“So, I’m yours? I thought you didn’t want another wife,” Raphael said in surprise.
“Oh. You’re not my wife. You’re my concubine.”
“Don’t I have a say in whether I wanna be yours?”
“No. You were my father’s. He’s dead. I inherit you. That’s the law.”
“Once again, I got no say in my own life,” Raphael said sadly.
“It won’t be so bad. You’ll be treated as well as my wives and if...”
“If?” Raphael said as he quirked an eyeridge.
“Nothing. I know you’re not happy with the arrangement, Raphael. It’s understandable. You had hopes and dreams and being a concubine probably wasn’t one of them, but I assure you, your life won’t be unpleasant. I’m not like my father. I'll do everything I can to ensure you’re happy.”
“No offense, Leo, but I don’t want this. I…”
“I understand. I can release you, but an Omega’s prospects are bleak. This arrangement is the best you’re going to get. Do you grasp that?”
“You can change that. Can’t the king change those laws?”
“No. I am subject to those laws too. Only Parliament can change them.”
“That’s fucking unfair!” Raphael hissed as his green eyes blazed.
“Life often is. You can’t wallow in misery, Raphael. Find something to be positive about. You have a lot to be grateful for. Unlike most Omegas, you have someone who’ll love you, provide for you and give you everything you want. You’re lucky. All you have to do is please me, love me and give me children. That’s not a lot to ask, is it?”
“You are like your father! All he cared about was his needs,” Raphael raged. “I thought we had an understanding earlier, Leo, which was that you’d treat me with respect and not like I’m just a breeding vessel!”
“I will, Raphael, but you have to fulfil your end. You can continue your studies and pursue your interests. Your family can visit anytime.”
“Am I allowed to go out on my own?”
“Nope. I’m not either. I always have bodyguards, which are a necessity. You will too. I don’t want anything to happen to my stunning Omega.”
“I’m not yours!” Raphael snapped. “Leonardo, you’re a dick. I’m not afraid to tell you that and you’re going about the wrong way of making me wanna stay.”
“And you’re a petulant child, who doesn’t realize how lucky he is. What a pair we make, huh? Raphael, I’m truly sorry for the situation you’re in and I know how scared you must be. Alone and thrown into an arrangement you didn’t want. Crud. I could have handled this better,” Leo said with a sigh as he gazed at a glowering Raphael. “I’m breaking protocol by doing this. My father would never do that, so see, I'm not his clone. You're mine. I promise to love you, honor you, cherish you and I'll do everything I can to ensure you know you’re treasured. You'll have the same rights as my wives and everything you desire. If you’re still miserable in a year and want out, you can leave. There’ll be no hard feelings.”
“You’d really do that?” Raphael said in shock.
“Yes. I'm not my father, Raphael. I like my partners to be happy and I care about their welfare. I care about yours. I did the instant I saw you. To be honest, I was smitten at first sight and I was sad you were going to be my father’s, because I knew you wouldn’t have the life you deserved and that I would have given you a better one. I will. All I ask is that you try and love me. You might find you love me back and want to stay.”
“I liked you too, Leo, and I wanted your dad to, you know, because I felt I’d be happier with you. That sounds bad.”
“Yes, but I understand. He was an ogre and you feel like I am too. It’s my fault. I laid down the law like he always did.”
“Leo, I still like you based on our earlier conversation and I’m grateful for the clause. No one else has considered my welfare or given me a choice. I accept the clause and I want you to know that I will be going home in a year, because I can’t love you, no matter what you do and say. My heart belongs to someone else and I wanna be with him.”
“I see. If he feels the same way, I won’t prevent that. Your happiness is all I care about. I’ll be back shortly, hon,” Leo said as his cell phone rang.
Raphael watched Leo leave the room.
Hon? Ugh. That's so sappy. Leo's really not that bad, but I won't love him. I'll do the year, go home and then I'll leave the Hamato Kingdom, find Donnie, make him leave his mate and we'll be together like we're supposed to be.
XXXX
Leo headed to Lotus’s room and went inside.
She was sitting up in bed and reading a book.
“You called, Lotus,” Leo said.
Lotus set aside the book and said, “How’s your dad?”
“He’s gone.”
“I’m so sorry, Leonardo.”
“Me too. So many regrets and wasted time,” Leo said sadly. “The cops want us to go to the police station for questioning. We’re all suspects in Dad’s death. Even me and his concubine. How ludicrous is that? I get they have to cover all angles, but me? I loved my dad and Raph hadn’t even met him before today. The cops even suggested that Raph and I'd plotted to kill Dad, so that we could be together. How crazy is that?”
“It is. Raph, huh? Sounds like you know him well.”
“Not really. We talked a little at dinner. Dad had received a call and left the room. He’s a nice kid and I doubt he had anything to do with Dad’s death. He had nothing to gain from it.”
“What’s going to happen to this Raph?”
“I gave him some bull that I inherited him, which is the law and that he has to accept it. He believed it hook, line and sinker, although he was angry. He’s got spunk.”
“Oh, Leonardo, you shouldn’t have done that. He’ll learn the truth and be pissed.”
“Doubt it. He doesn’t know the Royal Rules. I didn’t want another partner, Lotus, but I was smitten with him at first sight and I was sad Dad had him, because I knew he wouldn’t be treated well and that I could give him love and everything he deserved. Now Dad’s dead, I have Raph and I’ll do all I can to make him happy.”
“I see. Can he give you children?”
“Yes. He’s an Omega and a turtle like me. I’m sorry, Lotus. I didn’t plan on meeting Raph. I’d never thought of…”
“If he gives you a son, your problems are sorted.”
“Yes. I gave him an out. He’s not happy about the arrangement and if that’s still the case in a year, he can walk. He accepted it. Now I just have to make him love me, so he doesn't do that.”
“You always liked a challenge.”
“Are you okay with this?”
“I already share you with Kimiko and Mona. Why should having to do that with one more faze me?" Lotus said sarcastically.
Leo winced at the words and said, “I’m sorry.”
“I’m not okay with this, Leonardo, and I doubt the others will be too, but hey, you’re king and you can do what you want. Our feelings don’t matter!”
“That’s not true!” Leo protested. “I always run things by you…”
“Except this,” Lotus said angrily as her eyes flashed. “Now I have to condone a kid, who will brag like crazy when he gives you an heir and the rest of us won’t matter! What will happen if you meet someone else? Will you take them on too?”
“Raph wouldn’t do that. You’re overreacting!”
“I am, huh? How would you like it if the shoe was on the other foot? Get out, Your Majesty. I’ll be publicly civil to your new plaything, but privately is a different story.”
Leo said nothing and left the room. He shouldn’t have been surprised that Lotus had reacted that way. She'd been wife number one. Then he’d added the others to the mix and now he had Raphael. It was a lot to expect of her, but he wasn’t going to change the dynamics. Lotus had to accept it or she could walk. Actually, he’d make her leave. He wasn’t going to put up with her sass and he was going to make Raphael a better deal.
XXXX
Leo entered Raphael’s bedroom and said, “Wipe that crap off your face, Raph, and get rid of the other makeup. You don’t have to wear it.”
“The jing liked it.”
“I’m king now and I say you don’t have to. You’ll find nail polish remover and stuff in the bathroom cabinet.”
“Fine,” Raphael said and went to the bedroom.
Leo followed him.
XXXX
“So, where were you?” Raphael asked as he removed the makeup from his face.
“My wife called,” Leo said. “I don’t have to answer to you, Raph.”
“But I have to answer to you. I think you have to do the same. That’s fair, right? You want this relationship to be equal and for me to stay.”
“Yes.”
“Then do your part, Leo. Show you love me. I like to know that I can reach my partner and that they’re safe if I’m not around, so let me know where you are. Show your emotions and let me in. You were like a rock when you talked to the cops.”
“That’s Royal…”
“BS. Leo, if you want me to love you, you have to be affectionate and talk feelings and stuff. It isn’t easy for me either, but I will do that. Couples should be able to talk about anything and everything with each other and that’s what we are for this year. I want that and I don’t wanna walk on eggshells with you.”
“I’ll try.”
Raphael removed the nail polish from his fingernails and said, “If I give you kids during this year and I still leave, what’ll happen to them?”
“Depending on their gender, they’ll have different futures. A son might be king one day. I'd have to approach Parliament and ask if they'll allow that. Of course, it'd be easier if we were married. I wouldn't need to ask Parliament and the child would automatically be king when I pass. You can still leave in a year if you wish. What do you say, Raphael?”
“You told me that you didn’t want another wife, Leo. What changed your mind?” Raphael said and raised an eyeridge.
“Call it going with my dick,” Leo admitted and then chuckled at Raphael’s puzzled expression. “I’m besotted with you, Raph. I’ve never felt this way about anyone before. You’re feisty and you push my buttons. I love it. You’re a breath of fresh air. I think you’re gorgeous and I believe you deserve better than being a lowly concubine. I’d like you to be my husband. You’ll legally have all the rights my wives do and our children will be legitimate. That is important to me. We can have the ceremony soon. You can still leave in a year if you want to. As my husband, you can travel with me. I can take you to public events and so on. As a concubine, you'd have been relegated to the palace and kept out of sight. What do you say?”
“How do your wives feel about this?” Raphael asked as he removed the nail polish from his toenails.
“Their opinion doesn’t matter.”
“It should. Don’t you care about their feelings?”
“Not when it comes to you,” Leo admitted. “I want you and I don’t care if they approve or not. If they don’t like it, they can leave. I’m serious. I’d be happy with one partner. You. I’d do that for you, Raph.”
“I…” Raphael began.
Raphael thought about Donnie and his selfish parents.
Being Leo's husband would give me more rights and any kids would be legitimate. My parents might get more money. If I have a son, he'll automatically be king when Leo dies. Can you believe that? Me, a lowly Omega, the dad of a king. I can still leave in a year if I don't fall for Leo. As the king's ex, I'll have a better life, because I believe Leo would ensure that I was financially stable for the rest of my life. Leo's wives might be upset about this, but I'm gonna do it and think of the bigger picture, which is me being a free, wealthy and happy Turtle with Donnie.
“So, Raph?” Leo pressed?”
“Let’s get married,” Raphael said. “I have a request.”
“Anything,” Leo said as his eyes shone with happiness.
“I don’t wanna wear makeup and I’m not gonna wear girly stuff. I’ll wear a kimono if I gotta, but that’s as far as I’m gonna go.”
“Deal,” Leo said and took Raphael’s hand. He kissed it. Then he leant close and pressed a tender kiss against Raphael’s lips.
The kiss was soft and delicate like a butterfly’s wing and just long enough, so that Raphael could feel the warmth of Leo’s skin and inhale his heady scent, which was a mixture of musk and sandalwood.
Leo smells amazing and he's a good kisser. Stop it, Raph. You aren't gonna fall in love with him. It's a year and then you can find Donnie. Remember that.
Leo smiled and said, “Like that, Raph?”
“It was nice and I liked it. You’re gentle. I didn’t expect that.”
“That was just a taste of how it’ll be with me. I really am not my father’s clone. I'll do what I can to make you happy and I'll give you everything you desire. I'll let you rest and fetch you for breakfast in the morning. There are clothes in the closets. If they don’t meet your approval, I’ll take you shopping. Tiger Claw is my personal advisor and confidante and if you need anything and I'm not around, he'll help you with whatever you need. Sleep well, Raph.”
“You too, Leo.”
“We can discuss the wedding tomorrow. No expense will be spared, Raph, so please don’t hesitate to tell me what you want. Night.”
“Night, Leo. I got a long list.”
“Hah. I bet you do.”
Raphael watched Leo leave the room. Then he went to the bedroom, undressed, climbed into bed, lay down and closed his eyes.
What a fucking weird day. I was gonna be the ugly king's concubine, but he died and now I'm gonna be his son's husband. What a change in status. Who'd have thought that a lowly Omega like me would live in a pad like this and be the king's mate? I mustn't get used to it, because I know I won't love Leo, no matter how awesome he is and I'll be outta here in a year. I only love Donnie and I wanna be with him. Donnie, I miss you so much.

Chapter Text
The next morning, Leo woke at five and beamed when he thought about Raphael.
He's adorable and I'll do everything I can to show him I love him. I wonder if he's ever had pancakes. I'll make him that and we'll breakfast together in his room. Then I'll introduce him to everyone.
Leo donned his dressing gown and went to the kitchen.
XXXX
“Leonardo,” Bella, the Irish cook said in shock when she saw him. Only she was there. The other staff would arrive soon. “I am surprised to see you here. I want to convey my condolences about your father. He will be deeply missed.”
“Thank you, Bella. He will be,” Leo said. His father had been old school and had never called anyone by their first names and hadn’t liked it when people had used his first, but Leo was more modern. Publicly, he was old school.
“Is there anything you need?”
“No, thank you. Bella, there'll be a new addition to the family. I’m marrying Raphael, my father’s concubine. I love him very much and I want him to be treated with respect. I'd like you and your staff to provide the food for the wedding, which will be a huge occasion. Only the best for Raphael. Do you understand?”
“Of course. May I be bold and ask why you are marrying your father’s concubine? It is not protocol.”
“I’ll allow you that one question, as you are like a mother figure to me. The simple answer is that I fell in love with him when I saw him at dinner last night and my father’s death has provided me the opportunity to give him the love I don’t feel he'd have had with my father. I’m besotted with him. Do I have your word that you’ll treat him with respect and carry out his every wish? He and I will, of course specify what we want for our wedding.”
“Absolutely. He must be special to have captivated your heart so quickly.”
“He is. You’ll like him. He’s outspoken, passionate, has a great sense of humor and more. He’ll breathe life into this stuffy place and I think he’s exactly what I need. I'm too reserved and primp and proper at times.”
“I have known you since you were a baby, Leonardo, and I can honestly say that you need someone who’ll get you to come out of your shell more, who’ll be the oasis you need through the challenges that life throws at one and who’ll give you the love you deserve. You are a good person and sometimes I…”
“You what?”
“I don’t feel you get that from your wives. If Raphael can do that, I will love him to the moon and back like I love you. I regard you as my son. I also think you’re unhappy with your situation. You never wanted three wives. Your father pressed you to marry them, because it would create peace with their kingdoms.”
“You know me well,” Leo said with a sigh. “I love my wives, but something is missing. I don’t know how to explain it.”
“Chemistry and passion?”
“Yeah. There’s no romance and it's staid. Does that make sense? I sound like a jerk.”
“Not at all. I am sad you are in that situation and I am glad you feel you can talk to me. I was in that situation, but I got out and I am now happily married. I want the same for you. Perhaps Raphael can light your inner fire and is the passion you seek.”
“I think he is,” Leo said with a smile. “Anyway, I want to make him breakfast. I was thinking the chocolate chip pancakes I had in New York last week. Do you have a recipe?”
“Of course. I make them all the time for my grandchildren. Let me show you.”
For the next while, Bella showed Leo how to make the pancakes. He soon had two huge stacks of them on plates and placed them on a tray. A jug of maple syrup was also placed on the tray.
“You take the pancakes. I’ll bring the coffee,” Bella said as she placed cups, a pitcher of milk, a bowl of sugar and a coffee bodem on a tray. “I guarantee your Raphael will love this, Leonardo.”
“I hope so. Thank you for helping me. Do you think you can teach me to be a great cook? I want to be able to make Raphael whatever he wants.”
“I would be delighted. Let’s go.”
They left the kitchen and headed to Raphael’s room.
XXXX
Leo and Bella entered Raphael’s chamber and Leo’s breath caught in his throat when he saw Raphael stretched out in bed with his eyes closed and the blankets off. His eyes raked approvingly over Raphael’s buff body and heat flooded his groin as he imagined him and Raphael making love, but he pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind. Now wasn’t the time for those thoughts, especially as Bella was present.
“Morning, Raph,” Leo said as he placed the tray on the desk.
“I’ll leave you,” Bella said and set her tray on the desk. “By the way, he’s a looker, Leonardo. I can see why you’re taken with him,” she added with a wink and left the room.
“Hey,” Raphael muttered sleepily as he opened his eyes. “How long have you been there, Leo?”
“Just a few minutes. I brought breakfast. I thought we could eat together. Do you like pancakes?”
“I’ve seen them on TV,” Raphael said as he sat upright. “My family only makes Japanese food, but I have had ice cream. You made pancakes? No way! You’re pulling my leg.”
“I did,” Leo said as he settled the tray on Raphael’s lap. “They’re choc chip and here is Canadian maple syrup. I hope you like them. Your coffee is here too.”
“No one’s ever made me breakfast. Thanks, Leo,” Raphael said and then spontaneously kissed Leo’s cheek, which made him flush.
“You’re welcome. I plan on being a good cook, so I can spoil you,” Leo said as he took his plate and then drizzled maple syrup over the pancakes.
Raphael poured syrup over the pancakes, speared his fork with pancake and tucked in. “Wow,” he said as happiness shone in his eyes. “This is heaven. I could eat these all day. Thanks, Leo. I’m impressed. I can’t cook for shit, though. Mom and Mikey did all the cooking.”
“Mikey? Maybe we can learn to cook together.”
“I’d like that. Mikey’s my older brother. He’s married and he and his wife are expecting. They’re busy, so I don’t see them much.”
“That’s sad. You must miss him. Think he’ll come to our wedding?”
“I don’t know. He’s really busy." Raphael chewed and swallowed another pancake. “My parents will want to be there. They’ll be chuffed with my status. Even more so when they get their paycheck,” Raphael said bitterly.
“I don’t understand,” Leo said and blinked in confusion.
“They were okay with your dad bedding and treating their son as a breeding vessel, so they’d get paid and would be freed from their debt. Give them their money, but I don’t want them at the wedding and I don’t want them around me,” Raphael hissed.
“Raph, that’s terrible,” Leo said in astonishment. “There had to be another way to fix their financial problems.”
“They coulda asked my bro, but they didn’t wanna burden him. I love them, Leo, but I don’t wanna be around them. I’m hurt that they could do that to me.”
“I understand. I’d feel the same way. I'll talk to them,” Leo said and ate more pancake. “Have you traveled, Raph?”
“The farthest I went to was Tokyo for my great aunt’s funeral when I was eight. We were there for ten days. I didn’t see much, though, because it was the mourning period and we only left the house for the funeral and the airport to return home.”
“We'll travel if you would like to, starting with our honeymoon. Where would you like it to be?”
“I can pick?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t know. I’ll think about it. You’ve traveled a lot, huh? What’s your favorite place?”
“Anywhere with you.”
“Leo, be serious.”
“I loved New York, Paris, Madrid, Honolulu and Cape Town, but none of those places were with you. Any place with you will be far more special to me. Choose a place I haven’t been, so we can experience it for the first time together,” Leo said and devoured the rest of his pancakes.
“Okay,” Raphael said and ate more pancakes. “I’d like to see the Seychelles. There are tons of islands. Most of them are small with only one resort, so we’d have it to ourselves. There are lots of activities and we can even swim with dolphins," Raphael said and beamed at the idea. “I’ve always wanted to do that. The Seychelles is close in proximity to Tanzania and Kenya, so we could even go on a safari in the Masai Mara or Serengeti. That would be amazing. Have you and your wives been there?”
“No. I wouldn't take you to any place I took them. That'd be tacky. I love that idea. I’ll get Tiger Claw to liaise with my other staff and travel agent.”
“Will you have to take your staff with you?”
“Of course. They'll be within ear shot, but we'll have our privacy, Raph,” Leo said as he placed his plate on the tray.
“Great. I don’t exactly want them to, uh, see us, you know.”
“Me neither.”
Raphael polished off the rest of his pancakes and said, “Thanks, Leo. That was terrific.”
“You’re welcome,” Leo said as he took the tray and then set it on the desk. He handed Raphael his cup of coffee and added, “You need to think about our wedding reception menu."
“That’s easy. Burgers, fries, onion rings, a huge chocolate cake and milk shakes,” Raphael said with a grin. “I see them in American movies and they look yummy.”
“Are you kidding me?”
“No. I don’t want boring traditional Japanese all the time. I wanna experience new stuff.”
“I doubt think the guests will like that, Raph. They’re very traditional.”
“Whose wedding is it?”
“You’re right. If that’s what you want, I’m for it.”
“Thanks. You’ve had those, right?”
“I have and I liked them, but I would never have chosen them for my wedding feast. You’re different, Raph. I like that.”
“Yeah,” Raphael said and sipped his coffee. “I am. I just wanna try new things. That’s what life should be about.”
Leo drank some of his coffee and then said, “Indeed. I’ve agreed to go nontraditional for the marriage feast, but I'd like us to be married traditionally.”
“Okay. I’ll wear the kimono,” Raphael said and sipped his coffee.
“Thank you. I married my first wife at Daiku’s Chapel. He was my great times seven grandfather. We had seven hundred guests there and at our reception, so it was pretty big. I married my other two wives at a registry office and we had a small and intimate reception of forty. I want us to be married at Jun’s Chapel. You know his history, I trust.”
“Yeah. We learned about him at school. He was one of the most brilliant warriors in the kingdom, was the first king and is your great times something grandfather.”
“Great times twelve. I admire him greatly and have strived to be like him. The chapel is massive and can seat four thousand. I want to be married there, because of the significance of it and because it is grand and opulent. I want our wedding to be a huge extravaganza and to show the world how crazy I am about you. I want it televised. I didn’t agree to it with my other wives, but I want it to be for us, so that everyone can witness our beautiful love story and share in our day. I want our wedding reception to be bigger than my previous ones. I'll be inviting heads of state, friends, family members and acquaintances from all over the world.”
“It’ll be broadcast?” Raphael said in amazement. Donnie will see it and will be stunned. Maybe he'll contact me and want me back.
“If you agree.”
“Sure. Why not?”
“Raph, if you leave me, I’ll still ensure you’re taken care of financially for the rest of your life. On that note, I think you need to meet my wives and kids.”
“Leo, they aren’t gonna like me and will see me as an enemy, especially if you keep favoring me over them.”
“Initially maybe, but they’ll soon grow to love you. How can they not? You’re an adorable giant marshmallow. Mine.”
“I am not,” a blushing Raphael said as he stood up and then went to the en suite bathroom.
Leo gazed at Raphael’s butt and once again thoughts of him and Raphael making love flashed in his mind. I love Raph and I can't wait to show him that. I have the perfect proposal setting and the perfect ring. I'll pop the question tonight.
Raphael finished his shower a while later, donned a blue silk kimono and then he and Leo linked hands and went to Leo’s wives’ quarters.
XXXX
Lotus blanched when she saw Leo enter the room with Raphael, but masking her emotions, she said politely, “Good morning, Your Majesty.” She called Leo that in front of company.
“Lotus, I’d like you to meet Raphael,” Leo said. “Raphael, this is Lotus Blossom.”
“Nice to meet you,” Lotus muttered and reluctantly extended a hand.
“Hi,” Raphael said as he shook it. “Hey. I wanna get something off my chest. I know how awkward it must be to meet your husbands’ intended husband. It’s awkward for me to meet you too. I want you to know that I would never do anything to cause trouble between you and Leo and I know he was yours first. I'd like us to get along and to, I don’t know, maybe we could be friends. It'd make things easier for Leo.”
Hearing the words, Lotus nearly had an apoplexy. That hideous little shit! Us friends? How dare he suggest that! Absolutely not. Intended husband? Leo isn't going to marry him, is he?
Aloud, Lotus said, “Yes. It would be easy for my husband. His needs count after all,” she said snidely, making Leo flinch. “I would like that, Raphael. I hate tension and I don’t want my child to live in a hostile environment.”
“Great,” Raphael said with a smile.
Just then, Kimiko entered the room with hers and Lotus’s toddler daughters, who were Ori and Peni. They were three-years-old and two-years-old respectively and had dark hair and eyes like their human mothers.
Seeing Leo, they ran to him and wrapped their arms around his legs.
“Daddy!” they said in unison.
“Hey, my girls,” Leo said as he bent down and kissed their faces. “Daddy is so happy to see you. Are you being good?”
“Yes, Daddy,” they said in unison.
“Who is this?” Kimiko asked as she stared at Raphael.
Leo ruffled his daughters’ hair affectionately, pulled away and said, “This is Raphael, Kimiko. Raphael, this is Kimiko and these are my daughters, Ori and Peni.”
“Hi,” Raphael said and extended a hand. “They’re beautiful.”
Kimiko shook it and said, “You’re the new concubine, right? One of the staff told me.”
“No. He’s my intended husband,” Leo broke in.
“W-what?” Kimiko said in shock, her eyes wide.
Mona appeared and said, “Well, what do we have here? Good morning, Your Majesty, Kimiko, Lotus and girls.”
“Mona, this is Raphael,” Leo declared. “I’m marrying him.”
“You’re marrying your father’s concubine? How tacky,” Mona said and wrinkled her beak in revulsion. She realized she'd seen Raphael before somewhere but couldn’t remember where.
“They never copulated and yes, I am. I expect you all to treat him with respect,” Leo said as he stared at his wives.
“Why should we, Your Majesty?” Kimiko asked. “He’s a concubine elevated to your bed and that’s all he is. Why should we respect him? He’s also a commoner.”
“Enough! Because I say so. That is reason enough,” Leo said firmly and glared at Kimiko. “If you can’t, you can walk. Come on, Raph. I want to show you around the palace.”
Leo left the room, leaving his angry wives to reflect on all they’d learned. They despised one another, because they felt they were in competition for Leo and always strived to outdo one another, but seeing Raphael, they realized they had a common enemy: him.
“I know we don’t always see eye to eye,” Kimiko began. “But the real enemy here is not one another. It’s that little shit. We have to get rid of him.”
“He suggested that we become friends,” Lotus said. “Can you believe that? Why would I want to do that?”
“He’s trash,” Mona said. “I can’t believe Leonardo wants to marry him. Why aren’t we enough? I know how to get rid of him,” she added as a memory of where she’d seen Raphael flashed in her mind. “I’ve seen him at restaurants with a male Turtle. They were kissing in the back booth at one and the manager asked them to leave.”
“So what? Kissing isn’t a crime,” Lotus said as she rolled her eyes skyward.
“But if we can find dirt on Raphael, like find out that he isn’t a virgin and other dark stuff, Leonardo will drop him and send him back to the trash heap where he belongs.”
“No. I got a better idea,” Kimiko said. “Botulinum toxin. It’s the most toxic substance known and one teaspoon can kill a billion people. My brother’s a chemist and he’ll gladly do this for me. He loves his big sister and would do anything for me. I trust Leonardo’s having an engagement party for his little slut. It’ll happen there.”
“Wonderful,” Mona said and rubbed her hands gleefully as her eyes gleamed at the thought of Raphael soon being dead.
“It’ll be a quick death, right?” Lotus asked.
“Yes,” Kimiko said. “I’ll talk to my brother now,” she added and left the room.
“Isn’t there a less drastic method of getting rid of the little tramp?” Lotus asked. She didn’t really want Raphael killed, even though he was a nuisance.
“No,” Mona said. “There isn’t. This is the only way, Lotus. Don’t feel bad. Raphael will soon be dead and that’s all that matters. You don’t want him to bear Leonardo’s heir, do you?”
“No. I just…”
“Just nothing. You’re in it on it, Lotus and if you drop us in shit, I have stuff on you that Leonardo won’t approve of. You’ll be cast out. You know what I mean.”
“I do,” an ashen Lotus said.
“Good. Let’s take the children to the garden, Lotus. It’s a beauriful summer day.”
Lotus and Mona took the kids to the garden, but all Lotus could think about was the engagement party and her role in Raphael’s death. Guilt gnawed at her as she chewed her bottom lip. She should do the right thing and say something, but then Mona’s threat flashed in her mind.
Leonardo can't learn about my infidelity and gambling. I'll say nothing. I hope Raphael's death isn't too painful.
Later, she and the others went to the police station to give their statements about their whereabouts the previous evening.
XXXX
Leo spent the morning showing Raphael around the Palace.
Then he changed into a yellow kimono. Raphael and he then went to the police station for formal questioning.
When they returned to the palace, Leo went to field calls in his study and to attend to other affairs.
Left to his own devices and not wanting to mingle with Leo’s wives, Raphael read a book in his room.
Leo went to Raphael’s room at six p.m. and said, “I’m sorry I was gone for so long, Raph.”
“You’re the King and I understand that you’re a busy guy. You don’t gotta apologize.”
“I am, but I’ll try to be more present for you. I don’t want you to feel neglected. I’m sorry about my wives.”
“It’s understandable they’re mad, Leo. I don’t blame them. They thought they were enough. Now I’m in the picture. It’s a lot to swallow.”
“Well, they have to accept you, because I won’t give you up. I’ll talk to them tomorrow. Would like you like to go for a sunset walk in the gardens?”
“I’d love that. I heard that your mom planted some of the rarest and most stunning roses in the world. I love plants and being around nature. It’s soothing.”
“She did, but they aren’t as gorgeous as your eyes.”
A blushing Raphael said, “Yeah? I’ve never thought they were special.”
“Yeah. You're extremely beautiful and I’ll never stop telling you that and how much I love you,” Leo said and then brushed his lips against Raphael’s in a gentle kiss. “Let’s go.”
They linked hands and went to the palace gardens.
XXXX
The sun was setting as they strolled along and marveled at the various flowers.
When they reached a patch of sunflowers, Leo stopped and dropped to one knee. He thought it was the perfect setting, because he believed that sunflowers symbolized adoration, loyalty, joy and longevity. Raphael was his sunflower and the awakening of happiness he’d never felt before. He was a dream come true and Leo vowed to never fuck things up.
“W-what are you doing, Leo?” Raphael asked in amazement.
Leo withdrew a small box from his kimono, opened it and said, “Raphael, I wanted to properly ask you to marry me. Will you do so and make me the happiest guy alive? I promise to treasure you, honor you and to do my utmost to make you happy for as long as I live.”
Raphael gasped when he saw the exquisite rose gold, 14 k palladium white gold and silver ring, which had a sapphire stone. He’d never seen anything that magnificent before.
“So?” Leo pressed. “Will you marry me? My knee…”
“Yes! I will!” Raphael said enthusiastically as his eyes shone with happiness. “You’re serious? That’s mine? You really wanna give me this?” He dropped to his knees and stared at the ring.
“It is,” a beaming Leo said as he slipped the ring onto Raphael’s ring finger. “It belonged to Jun and I want you to have it. I have the matching one, which I’ll wear at our wedding ceremony. Yours can double as an engagement and a wedding ring, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be receiving more wedding gifts and gifts just because I love you. You will. Lots of them. I’ll love spoiling you.”
“Wow. I’ve never owned anything this old or so stunning,” Raphael said as he stared at the ring in awe. “I love it and I’ll never take it off. Thank you, Leo.”
“You’re welcome, takara. May I call you that?”
“Huh? Yeah. You can even call me Raphie if you want. It’s more intimate than Raph.”
“I like it. The ring, other jewelry and gifts remain yours if we split. I have a request.”
“What’s that?” Raphael said as he shifted his gaze from the ring and stared at his betrothed.
“I’d like to seal our deal, Raphie."
“Oh. Of course. I’m sorry.”
Leo wrapped his arms around Raphael’s neck and kissed him passionately.
Swept away by the romantic gesture and the moment, Raphael eagerly returned the kiss and deepened it by pressing Leo’s head down.
Wrapped up in each other, the couple failed to see a photographer, who’d managed to sneak into the palace gardens to snap photos of the flowers for a magazine. Seeing the couple, he hid behind a rose bush.
Peeking out, he snapped photos of Leo proposing and then of the newly engaged kissing couple. Then he beat a retreat. He’d hit the jackpot and he knew his boss would be stoked. Maybe he’d get a pay rise.

Chapter Text
The reporter, Hori Kenji arrived at his work and excitedly went to his boss, Nakamura Hinata’s office. He couldn’t wait to show him his photos of the King and his new love.
“Boss, guess what I got?” Kenji said animatedly as his eyes shone.
“I hope it’s something good,” Hinata said as he looked up from the article that he was proofreading. “And something the readers will love. We’re losing customers. No one’s interested in debates, annual fetes and the like anymore. We need to publish articles that’ll keep our readers hooked. If it’s another fete, spare me.”
“It’s not, Boss,” Kenji said as he turned on his digital camera and held it up for his boss to see the photos. “Look at these.”
“Is that the king? Who’s that with him? How’d you get these?”
“Yeah. It’s King Leonardo. I have no idea, but I’ll find out. Well, I kind of went on his property. Security was...”
“You trespassed? Kenji, we can’t use these. We'll be sued by the king for trespassing and for violating his privacy and we’ll have to shut down the paper. It’s too bad, though. Those are fantastic shots. Our readers would have loved them.”
“It’s fair game if the security was lax,” Kenji argued. “The king can’t deny that.”
“He can do anything he wants, Kenji. If he learns of this, he can even imprison you. Do not publish this in my paper. Got it? If you want photos of him, take them like everyone else when he’s in public,” Hinata said and waved his hand dismissively.
“Fine, Boss. We won’t publish them in the paper.”
Kenji sighed as he left the room and went to his cubicle. Fuck this. I will publish the photos. Well, a couple on my social media and sell them to the highest bidder. Fuck the ethics behind obtaining them. I got bills to pay and those photos will more than take care of them. Boss is going home soon. I’ll post them online when he’s left for the night. He can’t fire me. It’s my personal account and my profile doesn’t say who I work for. I have to find the identity of the jing’s new mate. I know who’ll help me. My childhood friend who’s one of the chefs. Kenji grinned and placed a call to his buddy, who spilled the beans, including about the ongoing investigation of the previous king’s death.
A couple of hours later, only Kenji and the night staff were there, but he knew they wouldn’t bother him. He smiled as he uploaded two of the photos he’d taken that day with the caption, “King Leonardo and his new love, Agaki Raphael’s engagement." He wrote underneath that he had more and that if any parties were interested, they could contact him. Then he sat back and waited for his mail inbox to be flooded.
XXXX
Leo and Raphael were having dinner in the large dining room at 8 p.m., when Tiger Claw entered the room. Leo sighed and put down his fork. What now? Always interruptions. All I asked for was some time with Raph.
“Yes, Tiger Claw,” Leo said. “Is something wrong?”
“Forgive me, Your Majesty,” Tiger Claw said as he bowed. “I’m sorry to interrupt you and Mr. Agaki, but it’s urgent.”
“It always is.”
“Can we talk privately?”
“Why? Raphael’s my mate and anything that concerns me is his business too. Talk.”
“Yeah,” Raphael said and placed a hand over Leo’s own. “And vice versa.”
“Okay,” Tiger Claw said as he handed his phone to Leo. “The social media sites are buzzing with private and intimate photos of you and your mate, Your Majesty and using my tech skills, I found the person who took them, Hiro Kenji. He’s willing to sell them and the others he has to the highest bidder.”
“Fucking snake,” Leo hissed as his eyes blazed. “Vulture. I’ll sue the fucking pants off him. These were private. No one was supposed to know about our engagement until the press announcement. I was thinking to have that tomorrow. I want to see him now. And where the heck was security, huh? I pay them to ensure stuff like this doesn’t happen. I feel so violated and on my own land. I shouldn’t feel that way. Bring that reporter to me now and then prepare the dungeon for him and my security!”
“Calm down, love and wait a second, Tiger Claw,” Raphael said and lovingly squeezed Leo’s hand. "We have photos commemorating our engagement and we wouldn’t have if he hadn’t done that. That’s special, Leo. I’m not condoning what he did, okay?”
“You have a point,” Leo conceded. “So, I’m supposed to let him get away with this?”
“No. You could sue him for trespassing on your property, but my bet is that he doesn't have much money, so it might be kinda pointless. Also, your men weren’t doing their job, so the Judge might state that’s kinda your fault and...”
“It’s not...”
“The photos are magnificent. He’s an exceptional photographer, Leo. You can’t deny it and he’s smart as heck. He somehow evaded security. You gotta have real skills to do that. Make him an offer that he can’t refuse. You’ll sue him and he might lose everything he has. You never know what a judge might do. Or he can be the new royal photographer and get a fat paycheck from you each month. He’ll get exclusives of the ones we take too.”
“That sounds like a win-win for him,” Leo said with a huff. “And that he gets away scot-free. You don’t get it, Raph. If he can get on the property undetected, then others could as well and my family could be in danger. I can’t let that happen, especially not to you. I love you so much and I’d be a wreck without you.”
“I love you too. Step up security and lambast them. They’re the main ones at fault, but I’m feeling generous after today, Leo, and I adore the photos. He’s got talent. It’d be wasted in the dungeon. Give him a shot at being your official reporter. Do you really want a court case when you could be thinking of more important things, like planning our wedding?”
“You’re right. He’s talented,” Leo said with a sigh. “My men were more to blame. Tiger Claw, go lecture my staff and then bring me the reporter. The dungeon will remain unoccpied.”
“Yes, Your Majesty and Mr. Agaki," Tiger Claw said.
“You can refer to him as Your Majesty too,” Leo said. “I'll be marrying him soon.”
“Got it,” Tiger Claw said as he bowed and then left the room.
“I’m Your Majesty too, huh, Leo?” Raphael said.
“Yes and you’ll rule if I die before you. Raphael, I must tell you something. All matters concerning me are your business too, but I adress issues with practically and think logically. I don’t go with my heart. That is often folly. Do you understand?”
“Yeah. I felt great after today and I thought with my heart. I must be more careful in future, learn to be logical and be more mindful about who to allow around us.”
“Exactly, especially when it comes to our family. Their lives are at stake. I hope this reporter doesn’t cause more trouble. If he does, I won’t hesitate to lock him up in the dungeon and if he harms my family, he will lose his life.”
“It won’t come to that, Leo. He'll be grateful for this new gig. You’ll see. Have you told your wives about the engagement?”
“No, but I’m sure they’ve seen it online and I’ll get an earful later. Whatever. I don't care about them or what they think. You’re the only thing that matters, Raph, and I was blessed to find you. Let’s finish dinner. Tiger Claw will be back soon, I’m sure.”
“And what about divorcing your wives? Do you want that?"
“I wish I could. I’d do it in a naosecond, but I need valid reasons, like infidelity, physical abuse. Falling in love with someone else just doesn’t cut it, you know.”
“Yeah. I understand. I’ll be sharing you forever,” Raphael said and frowned.
“Nope. You get all of me all of the time, Raph. I’m only theirs on paper. I’m modifying my Will too. They get nothing. Only you and my children will inherit. Now eat up. It’s getting old.”
“WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?” Mona Lisa raged as she entered the room and stormed up to Leo. “You got engaged to that thing already? Not only does it look bad with the ongoing investigation, but he’s a slut and you have three wives who already love you and...”
“Shut up,” Leo snarled as he stood up. “Raphael is noble and pure and I expect you to treat him with respect. That’s right. We're engaged and I love him.”
“Love?” Mona said derisively and snorted. “You’ve known him less than forty-eight hours and you’re in love? Fucking crap.”
“Watch your mouth, lady,” Raphael hissed as his eyes blazed. “You’re forgetting who’re you're talking to and I’m no slut.”
“Fuck off, tramp!” Mona screamed as she backhanded Raphael across his face so hard that his head spun. He rubbed his cheek and glowered at her. “I’m not talking to you. Keep your trap shu. Leo, this vermin is lowly and beneath you. He had a boyfriend before you and was thrown out of a restaurant for kissing him. I saw it. That means they probably were at it like rabbits and he isn’t as pure as you think. I on...”
“Yes, you,” Leo broke in coldly. “Need I remind you that you weren’t pure before we married? You had numerous lovers and your last lover died in a battle. Our families thought we’d be a wonderful match for each other. Raphael is noble and as pure as the day he was born. I know he had a boyfriend, but they never went all the way. He is caring, gentle and sweet and our relationship is give and take, not take, take, take like it’s with you and the others. I’ve never been so happy. He’s everything I ever wanted and more and you should know this. I’m only yours on paper and that baby we were trying for isn’t gonna happen. I don’t want a family with you. I know you want my money. You spend it like crazy, so you’ll stay. You’ll get it monthly, but you’ll never have me again. You may as well tell the others. I don’t care if you all leave. I don't care about anything, except my children and Raphael.”
“You’ll be sorry, Leo!” Mona yelled.
“I am. I wish I’d never met you or the others. Get out of my sight. You will be respectful to Raphael or I'll cut your cash flow.”
“Fuck you, you interloper,” Mona shouted as she stalked out of the room.
“Wow. What a spitfire,” Raphael said. “Think she means it?”
“I’m sorry, Raph,” Leo said as he pulled Raphael to his feet and then embraced him.”We had such a lovely day and she’s spoiled it. I don’t think so. Mona’s many things, but she’s not a vengeful person. She'll calm down and accept the new normal. She loves my money too much to leave or to cause drama.”
“She hasn’t spoiled it, Leo. Nothing could. This has been the best day of my life. I just wondered if I should be concerned after that outburst or about your other wives.”
“No. They love my money too much to cause trouble. No one’s gonna hurt you. Only if you want me to in bed,” Leo said in a lower tone. “Forget about my wives. Let’s finish dinner.”
“I hope you’re right, Leo,” Raphael said as he pulled away and then he sat down. Then they resumed their meal.
XXXX
A nervous Kenji arrived at the palace at 9:30 p.m. and was shown by Tiger Claw to a sitting room, where Leo occupied a couch.
“Hello, Hiro Kenji,” Leo said as he stood up. "My assistant told me that you took those photos.”
“I did, Your Majesty. Perhaps...”
“You should let me talk. Hmm? Violating the king’s privacy ended in imprisonment back in the day. Did you know that?”
“I,” Kenji said nervously as his knees shook. Fuck. The king is going to punish me. Ken, you're so dumb. You shouldn't have taken them and uploaded them to the Web.
“You’re lucky I’m not like my ancestors. My husband-to-be and I are impressed with your photography skills. The photos commemorate our engagement and we love them. We would like all the ones you possess, so that we can enlarge them, frame them and hang them in our room.”
“What?” Kenji said in shock, his eyes wide.
“Yes. And we’d like you to be the official royal photographer. You’ll also get exclusives of other photos that we take.”
“You aren’t going to sue me or punish me?”
“You were wrong to trespass and my men were lax, so technically you’re all at fault, but I’m in a good mood today and I’m going to let your indiscretion go if you’ll accept my offer. I am warning you that if you cause any strife, that I won’t be so lenient the next time. I have to consider my family and their welfare at all times.”
“Understood? You’re serious?”
“Yes. You start at eight a.m. tomorrow. Don't be late. Remember to thank my love when you see him. He suggested hiring you and said you have talent. I have posted the official Palace announcement of my engagement on our website. There’ll be a press conference at ten a.m. tomorrow. Goodnight, Mr. Hiro.”
“Thank you. Thank you, Your Majesty,” Kenji said as he bowed. “You have my undying gratitude. See you in the morning. Goodnight,” he added and left the room.
Leo smiled as he headed to Raphael’s room. This was the most magical day. I adore Raph with all my heart and soul. I will forever. I can’t wait until our wedding and we’re united in body, heart and soul.
XXXX
“It’s bulldust,” Kimiko said as she played cards with Mona in her sitting room. “Leonardo marrying that ugly beast. How can he? He has no taste.”
“Apparently, he can do anything he wants. He’s the King,” Mona said sarcastically. “He’s only ours on paper now and he only wants that creature. Ugh. I hate it. We have to get Leonardo to see sense.”
“Good luck. He’s infatuated with it. Nothing will help. Death's the only solution like we discussed the other day."
"Did you get the poison?”
“No. My brother refused to get it. Hey, Lotus, you’re quiet,” Kimiko said and nodded at Lotus who was sitting on a couch nearby.
“I’m just tired,” Lotus said.
“Aren’t you mad about the engagement?” Mona asked.
What’s the point in being mad? It doesn’t change anything. Leonardo will still marry him and we’ll still be only his on paper.”
“So you accept it? Then you’re our enemy.”
“Yeah. I do. Look at Leonardo’s grin in the photos and the way he gazes at Raphael and vice versa. They’re deeply in love and nothing else matters. Only the two of them in that moment. Leonardo has never looked at us that way. He’s been kind and caring, but not like that and he never will be. Raphael is his true love and soulmate. We are lucky that Leonardo will still provide for us and our children and if we wish to leave, we can, but we can’t change Leonardo’s mind. We need to accept that. I did when I saw these photos. I love Leonardo with all my heart and enough to let him go. I’ll miss him, but I’ll eventually deal.”
“What poppycock!” Kimiko said as she rolled her eyes. “I love my husband and I want him back. Mona does too and we will win him back. The tramp has to go and we will get rid of him. Will you help us? Remember, we have that dirt on you.”
Lotus’s heart pounded as she looked at the expectant gazes of Kimiko and Mona. If I say no, they’ll kill me. If I say yes, Raphael’s done for. Shit. I’ll pretend.
“Yes. You’re right. It’s poppycock and crap I told myself to feel better,” Lotus said with a fake smile. “I don’t want to give up Leonardo and I hate that Raphael. He has to die. I’ll help you. I’ll go look up places to find that poison and report to you in the morning,” Lotus added and stood up.
“Wonderful,” Kimiko said and beamed.
“Night,” Lotus said and then left the room.
“Follow her,” Mona said. “I don’t believe her. She's going to tell Leonardo right now.”
“Are you sure? She seemed...” Kimiko said.
“One hundred percent. My gut says she’s going to Leonardo and I’m never wrong.”
“On it,” Kimiko said and rushed out of the room.
XXXX
Kimiko saw Lotus go into her room. She waited and Lotus left her room ten minutes later.
You’re still up?” Kimiko asked. "I just came upstairs and was thinking about bed."
“Yes,” Lotus said. “I wanted to get some chamomile tea.” Damn it. They don't trust me and Mona asked Kimiko to keep an eye on me. I think they want to kill me. Thank goodness I wrote the letter to Leonardo and hid it under my pillow. I hope he finds it soon.
“I’d like some too before bed. Let’s go together.”
“Sure,” Lotus said nonchalantly and they headed to the stairs.
Lotus was in front and was on step three when she felt a shove from behind and found herself falling. Screaming frantically, she desperately tried to hold onto something that would break her fall, but she had no success. She hit her head on the last step and landed in a crumpled heap, blood pooling underneath her.
Kimiko approached the prone body and whispered triumphantly, “You’re gone at last. I never liked you and Mona and I didn’t trust you. I know you were going to tell Leonardo and ruin our plans.
“What the heck happened? I heard screaming,” Leo asked as he rushed out of his room and approached Kimiko. Raphael behind him.
“She tripped on the second last step and then banged her head, Leonardo,” Kimiko said sadly. “We were going to get tea. I think she’s gone. It’s a tragedy. She's so young. Her poor daughter will be heartbroken.”
Raphael checked Lotus’ pulse and said, “She’s still breathing, but you gotta get her medical care right now, Leo.”
“Lotus, I’m so sorry,” Leo said miserably. “I’ll see to it, Raph,” Leo said and went to make a call.
“What really happened?” Raphael asked. “Your story didn’t add up. How could she suddenly trip? Did you have beef with her? Did that other wife?”
“I told the truth,” Kimiko said hotly. “She tripped. We’re not exactly all the best of friends, but we try to get along and do for the most part. We'd never hurt one another.”
“Hmm. We'll have to see what the medical report says then.”
“Indeed. It’ll only state what I said.”
Raphael didn’t have time to answer, as Leo and a medical team arrived. The doctors lifted a comatose Lotus onto a stretcher and into an ambulance. Then they drove to the nearest hospital.
Tiger Claw drove Leo and Raphael to the hospital. They sat in the back.
Raphael held Leo’s hand and thought about the “accident”.
I believe Kimiko pushed Lotus, but why would she do that? Is it because they were love rivals or is it because Lotus knows something that Kimiko doesn’t want anyone to know? And that Mona Lisa, is she involved somehow too? I can’t tell Leo my thoughts now. He’s got enough on his plate. I’ll tell him at a better time. Lotus, I hope you make it for your daughter. She loves and needs you so much.

Meanwhile, Donnie’s mate, Hirano Sota had just finished making dinner for them.
“Here you go, love,” Sota said as he placed bowls of crab curry on the kitchen table. “I hope you like it, Donnie. It’s the first time I’ve made it.”
“Thank you,” Donnie said and beamed at him. He took a large bite and said, “This is sensational, Sota. Not only are you kind, attentive, loving, loyal, honest and gentle, you're also a brilliant cook. I’m so lucky to have found you.”
“And I you,” Sota said with a smile as he sat at the table and then helped himself. “I was on the Net earlier and the Hamato family is in the news again. The king died yesterday and the new king, his son’s getting married again. He already has three wives.”
“That’s because the king only has daughters and they can’t rule, right? He desperately wants a son. If that doesn’t happen, his line ends.”
“Yes. It’s ridiculous. Women should be allowed to rule. Prince Leonardo’s latest flame is male. He was supposed to marry Leonardo’s father, but the old king suddenly passed away and Leonardo took him as his own.”
“That’s kind of gross,” Donnie said with a shudder. “Do you think they shared him?”
“Doubt it. The king died before they could consummate their marriage. Here’s the new mate,” Sota said as he picked up a newspaper from the chair beside him and then showed Donnie. “His name is Agaki Raphael, a lowly commoner. Poor kid. There are rumors that Leonardo’s as awful as his dad. If so, this new mate is in for a rough time. I can’t see the attraction to Raphael. He looks like a brute. I bet the marriage won’t last long. Still, if the king can get a son out of it, he’ll be thrilled. The kingdom will rejoice and Raphael will...”
Donnie’s eyes nearly popped out of his head as he studied the photos of Leo and Raphael. Raph, you’re with the King? I can’t believe it, You’re gonna be Royalty. Oh, Raph, I made a mistake, didn’t I? I like Sota and he’s a good man, but he isn’t you, Raph. I miss and love you so much. I didn’t realize it until I saw these pictures. I have to return and see you. I will do my best. We belong together, Raph. We always have. I was a fool not to fight for us and our love and to leave you. I'll return as soon as I can and I'll stop the wedding. We'll be together, run away and live how we want to.
XXXX
Leo sat in the hospital waiting room with Raphael and prayed that he’d soon receive news from the doctors about Lotus, who was in surgery and who had been for four hours. The doctors had stated that she had cerebral hemorrhaging and they had to operate. Lotus’s family lived far away and they’d be there as soon as they could.
“You want anything, Leo?” Raphael asked. "Coffee, something to eat?”
“Nothing, thanks. I’ll grab something later.”
“You need to eat, Leo. It’s ages since dinner.”
“I can’t. I keep thinking about Lotus. What if she passes? She's so young and our daughter won’t have any memories of her. All she’ll have are photos, videos and others’ memories. It isn’t fair. Lotus and I had our differences, but she was a good person and an exceptional mom.”
“She isn’t gone yet, Leo. You gotta have faith,” Raphael said and grabbed his hand. “She’ll fight and she’s got the best surgeons. They’ll do all they can for her.”
“I hope so. How on earth could she have tripped downstairs? She must have been down them hundreds of times. It doesn’t make sense.”
“It does to me. I...”
“Your Majesty,” Doctor Kimura Isamu said as he approached Leo and Raphael, who stood. “Your wife’s out of surgery.”
“How is she?” Leo asked anxiously as he clutched Raphael’s hand tighter. “Did she make it?”
“Hello, sir,” Kimura said as he nodded at Raphael, who returned the greeting. “We nearly lost her twice. She pulled through, however the prognosis isn’t good. Although we managed to reduce the cranial hemorrhaging, her brain stem has dead, which means she will never regain consciousness and function on her own again. She is reliant on a ventilator and is effectively gone, Your Majesty. I am so sorry.”
“Lotus, no!” Leo screamed as he fell to his knees. “How could this happen? Yesterday, you were full of life and now you’re gone. There’s got to be something you can do, Doctor, please!”
“I am sorry. There is nothing I can do. You will have to talk to your family about the next steps.”
“Is there really nothing you can do, Doctor?” Raphael asked as he knelt down and pulled Leo close.
“I’m afraid not. I wish there was. Please excuse me. I have to see another patient,” Kimura said and walked away.
“Raph, this isn’t true, right?” Leo asked sadly as tears rolled down his cheeks. “Lotus is alive and she’s going to come home and...
“No, angel. Lotus is gone. Sh. Don't cry. I got you. I’m here, Leo. It's gonna be okay,”
“How can it be okay? My daughter just lost her mom. How am I going to tell Lotus’s family? Her dad will be shattered. He lost his wife only two weeks ago. I have to start planning the funeral arrangements. I don’t even know what Lotus wanted. We never got around to talking about it. There’s so much to do. I have the press conference this morning and...”
“Leo,” Raphael said, pulling Leo to his feet, but still keeping him close. “I’ll help you with everything. You aren’t alone. We can put off the press conference. They’ll understand.”
“Maybe that’s a good idea. I can’t believe Lotus is gone, Raph. It seems so surreal.”
“I know, babe,” Raphael said as he touched his forehead to Leo's. “I’m so sorry. I’ll do all I can to help you and your daughter.”
“Thank you. I’m grateful for you, Raph,” Leo said and then kissed his lips. “If I didn’t have you, I’d fall apart and...”
“Leonardo!” an elderly, tall, trim and bespectacled man said as he approached Leo.
“Dad,” Leo said as they embraced.
“How is she?”
Leo turned to Raphael and said, “Raph, this is Lotus’s dad, Yoshida Fuji. Dad, this is Agaki, Raphael, my...”
“I know who that is,” Fuji said curtly. “It’s all over the Net. Your father’s concubine. Now yours. My Lotus should have been enough for you. You did not need two more wives and now you have this slut warming your bed. He’s not even a looker and is from a lower-class family with no connections. You really are slumming, Leonardo.”
“Hey, hey, sir,” Raphael snapped as his eyes blazed. “I’m right here and I’m not a slut.”
“Don’t talk to me, tramp,” Fuji yelled. “Leonardo, we shall talk privately. That shall wait here.”
“He’s not a that,” Leo thundered. “He’s my fiancé and you’ll treat him with respect. Do not forget who I am either.”
“I apologize, Leonardo,” Fuji said quickly. “I should not have spoken to you so rudely, but I am insulted that your concubine is here. Only family should be present and Lotus is a family matter. I would appreciate talking to you privately.”
“It's okay, Leo,” Raphael said. “You talk to him. I’ll sit over there,” he added and pointed at a chair. “Sir, I am sorry....”
“Thanks, Raph,” Leo said as Raphael walked to his chair and sat down.
Leo then turned to his father-in-law and told him all he’d learned.
“She can’t be gone,” Fuji said hysterically as he collapsed in Leo’s arms. “My beautiful only child. How is that possible, Leonardo? This has to be a bad dream. My family is cursed. My niece died last month, my wife died two weeks ago and now my Lotus. I can’t believe it. How’d it happen?”
“Lotus tripped as she went downstairs and hit her head on a step. Kimiko saw it happen.”
“Kimiko? That woman? You take her word, Leonardo?”
“I see no reason not to. She’s many things, but she isn’t a liar.”
“Right,” Fuji said sarcastically. “Leonardo, my belief is that my daughter was pushed downstairs either by your new concubine or Kimiko. It’s no secret that your wives hate each other. Staff gossip and my daughter has told me of her numerous arguments with them. They all see each other as rivals for your affection and your latest thing will too.”
“Raph was with me when it happened. I know you’re looking for someone to blame, but Lotus’s death was a tragic accident. No one pushed her.”
“I want an inquest and I want the coroner’s full report.”
“There’s bound to be one, but you will see. My other wives and Raphael had nothing to do with it. Did Lotus discuss funeral arrangements at any time?”
“She would want to be buried in a white casket and be laid to rest beside her mother and where I will one day reside. The memorial ceremony would be a simple Buddhist one. Instead of flowers, she’d want money donated to the Husky Rescue organization. They were her favorite dogs.”
“We'll work together to ensure all her wishes are fulfilled. Did she discuss our daughter?”
“Yes. Her wish was that her mother and I would have custody if anything happened to her, but given that I’m in my sixties, I don’t think that’s practical. I request that I be allocated a suite in the palace, so that I can be near her. I am retired and I have my own money, so you do not have to worry about that. She is my only family now that Lotus is gone.”
“Of course, Dad. You’re very welcome.”
“Thank you. We will talk more about that later. Let’s go be with Lotus and not prolong the inevitable,” Fuji added and sighed sadly.
Leo and Fuji went to the ICU and entered the room.
XXXX
Gazing at Lotus, who was hooked up to several machines, Leo’s heart shattered as tears filled his eyes. Lotus, I’m so sorry. I’ll do my best for our daughter and ensure she knows all about you. I can't believe you’re gone.
“I love you, my darling daughter,” Fuji said despondently. “You were my greatest blessing and joy and I will never forget you.”
Leo nodded at a nurse who'd entered the room and said, “Can you fetch Dr. Kimura, please? My father-in-law and I have decided to...let her go."
The nurse nodded sympathetically, left the room and returned with Dr. Kimura a few minutes later.
“Your Majesty,” Dr. Kimura said. “Mr...”
“Yoshida,” Fuji said. “Lotus is my daughter. Is there really nothing you can do, Doctor?” he asked hopefully as he stared into the doctor’s eyes.
“No, sir.”
“Then it is time. Leonardo...” Fuji said in a broken voice.
“Doctor, we have decided,” Leo said as he swallowed a lump in his throat. “That we will let my wife go. May we stay with her until she’s passed?”
“Of course, Your Majesty. I am sorry. I wish there was more we could have done.”
“Me too. Our daughter's so young and won’t remember her. Lotus loved her so much and she didn’t deserve this. She was such a kind and loving woman. Everyone loved her.”
Doctor Kimura and the nurse unhooked Lotus from the machines and then a weeping Leo and Fuji sat on either side of her bed and held her hands.
Two hours later, Lotus’s heart stopped beating and Dr. Kimura, who’d stayed with them, declared that she’d passed.
“I love you, sweetheart. Fly high with the angels, my baby,” Fuji said tearfully. “Tell your mother I love and miss her and give her hugs and kisses from me. I hope to see you both someday.”
“I love you, Lotus,” Leo said and then kissed her cheek. “You were a wonderful mom and an amazing person and I’ll ensure our daughter knows that. You brought love and light to everyone you met and now you’re the brightest star in the sky. Farewell. Thank you for everything.”
“I know this is a sensitive time, but did she mention organ donations?” Kimura asked.
“No,” Leo and Fuji said in unison.
“I do not wish it,” Fuji said. “And anyway, there is bound to be an inquest, so organ donation couldn’t happen.”
“I agree,” Leo said. “What happens to Lotus now, Doctor?”
“She will be taken to the morgue,” Kimura said. “And the ME, Dr. Ford will perform an autopsy and determine if there should be an inquest. After that’s done, her body will be released to the undertaker for funeral arrangements. Then the undertaker will be in touch with you. I am so sorry.”
“Thank you,” Leo said as he put an arm around his father-in-law. “We'll go to the morgue too. Lotus would want that.”
Kimura nodded and went to summon an orderly, who took Lotus to the morgue. A heartbroken Leo and Fuji went with them.
XXXX
Leo and Fuji were allowed to briefly see Lotus at the morgue and then they gave their contact details to the receptionist. They left afterwards. Leo went to the bathroom and then to get Raphael. Fuji saw where Leo was headed and decided he’d interrogate Raphael for answers about Lotus’s death before Leo returned.
Spying Fuji, who was walking towards him and expecting another rant, Raphael cringed. Damn it. That man again.
“You, kid,” Fuji said. “I want the truth. What really happened to my daughter? Did you push her?”
“I didn’t. I was with Leo,” Raphael said. “We heard screaming and went to investigate. Kimiko was bending over Lotus and saying she tripped and it was such a tragic accident.”
“Do you believe her?”
“No. I think she pushed your daughter. She sounded upset when she told us, but I believe that was fake. She was glad your daughter died. One less rival. I told her the coroner’s report would state what really happened. She knows I don’t believe her.”
“I see. That is what I believe too. Thank you. I will see that the truth is known and that the perpetrator’s punished. I will get Leonardo to know the truth too. He doesn’t want to acknowledge it. Get him to, kid. You have to. I have to get justice for Lotus. Tell Leonardo to push for an investigation into her death.”
“There’s only so much I can do, sir. I’m just his bedmate, remember?”
“Yes. That was wrong of me and I apologize. You are the only one who the King will listen to at present. Use your influence for my daughter. I beg of you. Grant an old man this request.”
“I’ll see what I can do, sir. I’m so sorry about your daughter. I only met her once, but she seemed pleasant.”
“Thank you. She was a lovely child. Good. I am going to see a friend. I shall see you at the palace later, Raphael,” Fuji said and walked away.
Raphael thought about Fuji’s request. That poor man. He’s lost almost everyone close to him. I’ll do what I can to get justice for Lotus.
Leo joined Raphael and said, “Hi. Thanks for waiting, Raph.”
“’Course I would. You okay?”
“No. Been a hellish day. I’ll talk later,” Leo said and then dialed a number. “Yeah Great. Thank you. That’s excellent. I’ll see you in the lobby. Thanks,” Leo added and ended the call. “We’ll meet Tiger Claw in the lobby. He’ll be here soon,” Leo said and began walking.
“Is the press conference off?” Raphael asked as he followed Leo.
“Yes. It’ll be a while after the funeral. It’d have been tacky and unfeeling now.”
“Right. Hey, Leo, don’t you think that Kimiko being there with Lotus when she had the accident wasn’t a coincidence?”
“Stop it!” Leo said crossly. “First you and now Dad with your conspiracy theories. It’s crap. My wives didn’t always agree, but they wouldn’t harm one another.”
“Stop being in denial, Leo. Kimiko killed her and I’m gonna prove it!”
“Raphael, you’re barking up the wrong tree. It was an accident. I don’t need this. I got enough on my plate," Leo said angrily.
“It’s not about you, Leo. It’s about justice for Lotus,” Raphael snapped. “If she was killed, she deserves justice and the perp, even if it's your wife, needs to pay. She isn’t immune to the law or do you wanna protect her, because she’s the mom of another of your daughters?”
“I wouldn’t do that. If Kimiko killed her, I’d want her punished.”
“Then listen to me. Push for an investigation and ask the cops to interrogate your wives.”
“Look, Raphael, I’m king, but I can’t just demand things. There’s a process. The coroner will determine if there should be an inquest or if there was foul play. If there wasn’t, there isn’t anything...”
“That’s fucking not true. You can do something. Leo, you can ask the cops to investigate.”
“Why would I ask them to waste their time and resources, Raphael, when there’s no reason to?"
“You're a stubborn bastard,” Raphael growled. “If I suddenly died, wouldn’t you want justice for me?”
“Of course I would. I adore you and I love Lotus. I just think...”
“Then do the same for Lotus. Leo, she loved you, was good to you and gave you a daughter. You owe it to them both,” Raphael said as he gazed intently into Leo’s eyes.
“Fine. I’ll do that, but I’m telling you now, Raphael, that Kimiko didn’t murder Lotus.”
Nothing more was said, as they arrived at the lobby. Tiger Claw was there and he helped them into the limousine outside. Then the chauffeur drove them to the palace.
XXXX
Meanwhile, a disguised Mona had arrived at the hospital and was standing outside the morgue. Leo had informed her and Kimiko by text of Lotus’s death. She saw Leo and Fuji leave the morgue, but they didn’t see her, because they were too invested in their conversation. Mona took a deep breath and went inside.
XXXX
Not seeing the receptionist, she looked for the elderly ME, James Ford’s room and went inside. She soon saw Ford, who was about to start the autopsy.
“Good day,” Mona said.
“You shouldn't be here, miss,” Ford said as he looked up.
“I should be. Is that Hamato Lotus Blossom?”
“I insist you shouldn’t be here. Please leave.”
“I have an offer you can’t refuse, Mr. Ford,” Mona said as she opened a bag containing cash. “I bet you want to retire soon and can’t afford to for a variety of reasons. I can make that happen. All you have to do is state that there was no foul play and that there is no reason for an inquest and I’ll give you five hundred thousand Yen. I know you’re on the fence about it, but you have no choice. I know that your wife is here illegally and I know you steal money from your work. Accept my offer and no one will know about it.”
“This is bullshit!” Ford said irately as his eyes flashed.
“Is it. Let me make a call to the cops and tell them all about your activities and about Lara Sue, isn’t it? One call and your life will go up in smoke,” Mona said and reached for her phone in her other hand.
“Okay. You got me. I love Lara and don't want her sent away. Don't do it. You win. I’ll do it. Then I’ll take early retirement.”
“Fabulous. I’ll sit in the corner and wait. Lock the door.”
Ford locked the door, performed the autopsy and then wrote what Mona had instructed him to do. That done, he checked that no one was around, so that Mona could leave undetected, which she did. Then he placed the money into his briefcase, left his report on his supervisor’s desk and exited the morgue. Destination: home and now that his money troubles were over, he’d apply for early retirement.
Notes:
A/N Will Donnie stop the wedding in time? Will the truth about Lotus's death ever be revealed?
