old teenage hopes are alive at your door

Chapter 7: His Favorite Title

Summary:

Prompt: Harry and Hermione have become a couple and now they just have to tell people.

This barely fits...oh well!

Chapter Text

People called Harry Potter many things: The Boy Who Lived, A Liar and Traitor, Out of His Mind, An Ungrateful and Arrogant Brat, Our Best Hope.

Now he had a more welcome and accurate title, one he was proud of: Hermione Granger's hopelessly smitten boyfriend (and personal cheerleader).

At that moment, only two people even knew he was with Hermione. And he happened to be one of them.

Before, they had agreed to keep their relationship secret. There was a war going on and Horcruxes to find and destroy...along with protecting her parents and keeping them away from Death Eaters' clutches. Not to mention a Ron sized elephant that wouldn't be thrilled at the news.

They were almost done with seventh year (or eighth, technically) and still no one knew Harry and Hermione were together. Keeping the platonic facade in front of the Hogwarts - and general wizarding - population was no easy feat, even with an invisibility cloak and certain signals. But they had succeeded.

"Maybe we can tell people now we are dating," Hermione's voice interrupted his musings. "It's almost been a year..."

Harry nearly dropped the quill he was holding. They were at the library, working on a major Charms essay. While Hermione's parchment was nearly full, Harry's only contained his name and the topic.

He swallowed. "Is that okay with you? We both wanted to be low-key, I know -" It would be a relief to hold her hand or snog her without worrying about getting caught. "And there's Ron..."

She looked at him with steady brown eyes. "He is our best friend and will have to learn to deal. I am not some trophy or object to be fought over and won. I'm..tired of hiding us, Harry. I am not ashamed of you, and you shouldn't be either." A pause. "We fought for this, remember? A chance for a peaceful life, along with challenging the 'blood purity' mindset. You're my boyfriend and deserve to live - and act - like a regular teenager."

Harry nodded with a slight smile. "As you wish, regular girlfriend of mine."

She threw a spare piece of parchment at him, which he easily dodged.

An hour later they finished for the day and left the library. On the way to Gryffindor Tower, as they got closer to the portrait, Harry took Hermione's hand in his. "Ready?" He whispered. "Whatever happens, we always have each other."

She beamed at him. "I was born ready, Potter."
