Chapter Text
“Thank you for all your help, I will now be returning my brother to Asgard.” Thor held Loki’s arm tightly as he pulled him towards the elevator.
Tony picked up the glasses he had just been pouring, handing one to Bruce as he sauntered out from behind the penthouse bar, “Not so fast, Hammer Time.” Thor turns around to face the Avenger, furrowing his brows.
“I’m not letting you take him unless you can prove to me he’s not getting out again. I don’t know why he targeted Earth but, I’m not risking him coming back.” Tony states, approaching Thor.
“I assure you, Son of Howard, he will be placed in the securest prison of the Nine Realms.” The god lifts his chin proudly as he boasts of Asgard’s achievements.
“First off, never call me that again and Secondly, that’s not gonna be good enough. I want complete access to every camera, sensor, and file that sees his block. If you aren’t willing to send that over, he’s staying where I can watch him myself.” Thor seems conflicted at Tony’s demands.
“I’m not certain that I can give you that,” Tony rolls his eyes, preparing to have Jarvis notify SHIELD of Thor’s noncompliance, “However, I could arrange for you to have a meeting with my father.”
Tony looks back at the rest of the Avengers, having a silent conversation before turning back to Thor, “When can he get here?”
“Actually…”
Tony, Bruce, and Clint fall to the floor almost instantly after emerging from the Bifrost. Steve kept it together for about 5 seconds before hunching over against a wall and trying not to vomit. Natasha, while successfully appearing fine, felt about the same as Steve. When the Midgardians finally recover, Thor excitedly introduces them to Asgard while the group escorts Loki to Odin.
“..And that’s where Lady Sif attempted to castrate me after I asked her why she didn’t have a boyfriend, Oh! And right over there was my favorite spot to hide from my tutors. If you look down the-”
“Will you shut up, you big oaf? We have tour guides for a reason.” Loki interrupts, throwing his head back exaggeratedly.
“Oh, like you’ve never been excited to have your friends over- oh wait! You’ve never had any.” Loki huffs, looking off in another direction. As the group finally approaches the palace, Thor directs them to a sitting room off to the side of the entrance, “You can wait there as I take Loki to his cell, when I return we can go find my father.”
“Hell no! He was literally in my head, I think I’ve earned the right to watch him get chewed out by his dad. There is no chance I’m missing that opportunity.” Clint stands up, the rest of the Avengers following. Thor looks at his friends, his brother tensing up next to him. “Then, we shall find the all-father.” Thor states eventually, dragging a much more reluctant Loki behind him.
“I insist on waiving my right to a trial, brother. I may not deserve your grace after my actions but I beg of you to still respect me enough not to put me through this. I am not asking for mercy, I am pleading that you not be more cruel than is necessary.” Thor continues forward, ignoring his brother’s words.
The Avengers roll their eyes, “Quit it with the pity party, Slytherin Reject.” Tony mocks, shoving him forward.
“Isn’t Slytherin green and silver?” Bruce asks.
“He might be wearing gold but, based on the fact he just got beat by people he was calling ‘lesser beings’, I think silver is the best he’s ever gonna get. Can’t imagine daddy’s gonna give him Child-Of-The-Year” Tony laughs out.
Thor stops abruptly.
“Hey, Point Break? You good?” The genius asks. The group looks at Thor, concerned. The god glances beside him to make eye contact with his brother before turning around to look at his friends. “We’re here!” he exclaims.
The group enter the throne room, as they near the All-Father, the midgardians bow respectfully. Odin appears visibly displeased. When the mortals raise their heads back up they look at eachother, Clint smirking excitedly before turning his attention to Odin.
“You wonder why I was never going to allow you to rule Asgard, Loki. Yet, you behave like this.” the elder begins.
“It is my birthright!” Loki shouts angrily.
“Your birthright? Your birthright was to die!” His voice echoes in the large empty space. All seven of them stiffen at the tone.
“You know, Loki. I remember on the day of your brother’s coronation, your mother noticed I was concerned about Thor being too young to take over. Do you know what she said to me?” Odin continued.
“What?” Loki asked.
“Thor won't be alone. Loki will be at his side to give him counsel.” Odin stood up, walking off to the side to take a goblet of wine from a servant before he began again, “It’s hard to imagine a time when we trusted you to be the voice of reason.”
“You expected me to do all the work while Thor takes all the credit? How is that fair, father?”
“It doesn’t need to be fair, child. We saved your life, raised you as our own, and you dare to ask more from us? You clearly are no son of mine, being ungrateful must be in your monstrous blood.” Odin punctuates his final words by slowly descending from the stairs.
“I was the only one who ever attended your lessons, I followed your orders and learned all that I could. I volunteered in the hospitals, I strategized for Thor and provided distractions so our warriors could escape. I did everything you ever could have asked of me, yet you refuse to give me a chance. Now, when I do just as you have, when I conquer as Thor does, I am punished for it? You did not raise me as your own, Odin. It is very clear who shares your blood.” For a moment Loki forgets they have an audience, he supposes now it does not matter.
The humans, standing behind Thor and Loki, share glances. Steve and Tony look at each other for a moment longer, Tony mouthing to the super soldier, “I don’t like this one bit.”
Odin stares at Loki, smiling. “Loki, if those classes had ever been for you, my first lesson would have been on the importance of public opinion. Even if I allowed you to take the throne, there wouldn’t be an Asgard to lead. They’d all revolt! You whine to Frigga how Thor’s friends treat you so poorly yet the only friends you seem to make are animals! The harsh facts are simply that you are not likable!”
This appears to hit Loki unexpectedly, a flash of betrayal flickers on his expression before being schooled back to neutrality. As Odin walks forward, Thor shoulders himself to partially block Loki from his father.
“No matter your heritage, the brain in your head, the masculinity of the form you take, or how many planets you attempt to conquer, you will never sit on this throne.” As Odin begins walking towards the door he concludes, “I apologize to our guests for the actions of this frost giant, I truly believed he could at least die correctly. Unfortunately, it appears he is a failure in that too.” Odin exits, gesturing for the guards to take Loki from Thor and then follow him. As the door slams shut the room is completely silent.
“What the fuck, Thor?” The god looks up to see his friends staring at him with varying expressions of disbelief.
“My brother has always been a handful, his shenanigans tend to anger our father. I am sorry that you had to see him like that, it is never a pleasant sight.” Thor hangs his head, walking to sit on the steps.
“Does your father say things like that often?” Steve asks, stepping forward.
“Well, yes, but Loki knows he doesn’t truly mean that. He’s just upset.” Thor elaborates, leaning his elbows onto his knees.
“Does he?” Tony speaks up, having drifted to the back of the group at some point.
“What do you mean?”
“Listen, I’m just saying that it doesn’t seem like the sort of thing you blurt out in frustration. That was brutal and as someone who has been on the receiving end of a rant like that, I guarantee this is not the first time Odin has said that stuff.” Thor appears to get angry, standing up and clenching his fist.
“Odin is a great father!” Thor’s voice booms, sounding from every direction in the massive throne room. Steve steps forward, flexing his arm in case he needs to use the shield.
“To you.” Steve responds softly.
“To all of us!” Thor is exasperated at this point.
“All of us?” Natasha repeats, crossing her arms.
“Yes! Before Hela was banished, her and our father had plenty of arguments but everyone knew how close they were.” Thor explains, realizing that the midgardians likely did not know of the oldest child of Odin.
“Hold on, your father banished his own daughter?” The Black Widow questioned, eyes widening in shock.
“Don’t put it as though he was cruel! Hela refused to retire from her conquests like our father wanted to.”
“Thor, did it ever occur to you that Odin’s favoritism could be considered cruel to his other children? From what I know of Norse Mythology, Odin was a conqueror. Would it not be expected that his daughter, raised feeling as though conquering was her very purpose, might have a difficult time being abruptly told that conquering is no longer acceptable?” Banner interjects, walking forward to sit beside Thor and pull him back down onto the steps. When Thor appears confused, Tony continues on Bruce’s line of thought.
“You ever hear the phrase ‘put yourself in someone else’s shoes’?”
“I do not think I would fit? You are much smaller than I, Starkson.” Thor looks up, confused.
“No, it’s- It means to think about things from another person’s perspective” Bruce explains, lightly chuckling at the miscommunication.
“Listen, SHIELD has some really good analysts. Maybe, if you convince your dad to allow us to take Loki off his hands, we can put him in some sort of ‘villain rehab’?” Steve proposes, sitting on the other side of Thor.
“Why? Why would you want to help him after all he’s done?” Thor stares at his friend, baffled.
“Some people would say the same thing about me. Thor, every single person in this room is a hero because someone looked at them and believed that they could be capable of good. Seeing what I’ve seen today, I think your brother deserves at least one fair opportunity to prove himself.” Natasha pats the god’s shoulder, squatting down in front of him.
—---------
“Hello, Loki. How ya doin’ today?” The man walks into the room, dragging a chair to sit down facing the cell. He pulls out a clipboard, setting it on his lap and smiling up at the trickster.
“Horrible.”
“Aw? How come?” He tilts his head, leaning back in the chair as he waits for Loki to respond.
“Well I’m stuck in this cell still.” In true diva fashion, the god lays dramatically on the floor with the back of their hand rested on their forehead.
“Come on, Lokes! We’ve been doin’ this for months now and you still start every session off with the same tragedy. I thought you were supposed to be the god of chaos! I’m gettin’ bored over here.” The SHIELD psych specialist smiles, propping his feet onto the edge of a nearby control panel.
“How dare! Oh! The agony!” Loki stands up only to pretend to faint like a maiden in distress.
“I kind of miss when you were just a run of the mill supervillain. A few months stuck in here and you're just a complete nuisance.”
“You don’t mean that!” The god sits up, using magic to create pearls just so they can clutch them.
“I absolutely do! You’re my least favorite criminal to psychoanalyze.”
“A most notable coward, an infinite and endless liar, an hourly promise breaker, the owner of no one good quality.” Loki jumps to their feet, walking around the cell and punctuating each insult with a point.
“Did you steal that from All’s Well That Ends Well?” He laughs at the god’s antics.
“More like he stole it from me! Pathetic mortals! Thou know nothing of the arts!” The trickster stands facing away from the man, feigning offense.
“As much as I love our conversations, I actually have a job for you.” Loki moves to the front of the cell, sitting criss-cross on the floor in front of the analyst.
“Is this more homework? I am not writing another diary, I never know what to write!” The god pouts, quite pathetically.
“Nope, the Avengers need help with another sorcerer. Her name’s Wanda Maximoff, a Hydra volunteer. This is her file,” He brings down the cell walls, handing Loki the clipboard he walked in holding, “Thanks to me, they’re willing to give you the role of understudy!”
Loki looks up from the file, “So, what do I do?”
“You just need to help me! I’m gonna analyze her behaviors and what we know of her backstory while you use your knowledge of magic to find a way to take her down? Got it? Then, if worse comes to worst they’ll take you off the bench and let you try taking her down yourself.”
Loki smiles up at his friend, rushing forward to hug him. When Loki pulls back he looks him in the eyes “Really?”
“Really.” Mobius smiles and leads the god out the door.
Notes:
I didn't want to make the physical abuse too apparent because I thought it would be best for Thor to have just never fully realize the severity of the situation for several reasons. One is that I was worried it might seem like he was being consciously ignorant to it and the other major one is that I knew that I wanted Thor to still have that moment where he gets to rectify all the times he didn't understand to what his brother was actually trying to say. Also, sorry it's so dialogue and action-heavy! I usually write for film.
