This sounds like an interesting story, I'm interested in reading it. Is the first chapter meant to only be a picture?

  National Novel Writing Month starts tomorrow, so I'll be posting from then on.
  I've already written part of it, but for it all to count I'll be posting throughout November.

Absolutely brilliant! I totally fell in love with this fic in the first chapter and I though, 'Well, it certainly can't get much better than this.' Guess what... I was horribly, horribly wrong. I adored every single part of this fic, including the plot (obviously, considering parts of it were ridiculously well researched), the characterization (all the characters were pretty much reacting and saying what I'd expect from them as an avid Sherlock fan) and the dialogue (which was funny, serious and introspective. This story provides a very good look at how trauma can affect a person and as a sufferer of PTSD I can safely say that it can be horrendously hard to recover.
I don't mean to end this comment on a bad note I just thought I'd tell you that when you referred to the Wills of both John and Sherlock at the start of the fic (possibly close to the middle), I think you meant to refer to the Power of Attorney. The Last Eill and Testament only comes into effect when the person has been declared officially sea by a qualified medical professional whereas the Power of Attorney comes into play when the person is no longer considered capable of making financial, medical, legally or similar decisions in the interests of their own well being. Situations such as comas, vegetative states, being declared mentally unfit, under the influence of a drug/alcohol addiction (hence people being shipped off to rehab by family members), etc. There are a few different types of Power of Attorney such as medical, legal and financial and until you are considered of age (no longer a minor) in your country of residence, your parents are automatically considered your Power if Attorney however a minor can change this be petitioning the courts for Emancipation. Just figured you'd like to know this if it hasn't already been pointed out bet some equally pedantic reader. ;-D

  Wow, thank you so much for your comment! I'm beginning to think I should go into writing/publishing professionally ;) The story started out with me being bored while stuck in hospital, I never thought it would reach these proportions, let alone this many readers. I am sorry to hear that you suffer from PTSD. I hope my portrayal of it in this story has not offended you. I have done some research, obviously, but writing realistically about it is quite hard when you only have a bit of research to go on.
  Thank you as well for pointing out that it's Power of Attorney. I could have sworn I'd changed that before publishing it. I may have confused it with the German concept that translates as Living Will. That might be the medical power of attorney, coming to think of it. I'm glad you pointed it out though :D

    Don't worry, if you'd offended me you'd totally know because I would've come right out and said it! ;-)
    I totally undertsand the horror of research; I myself hate doing it when your writing something (be it an original work or fanfiction, hell even a short story requires some research!) and it is very time consuming for something that is meant to be for pleasure, like Sherlock fanfic!
    By the way, if you were to ever write professionally I would totally buy, like, a million copies of your book(s) just so you'd write some more. Seriously though, I am not kidding!

      I actually like the research, it's an old habit that comes with my professional training, but I do agree, it does take time away from writing. John's uniform alone was a nightmare to research - which one would he wear? What does it look like? The 5th Northumberland Fusiliers DID exist but don't anymore.
      I never thought I'd write about war or the military in general and I had no prior knowledge whatsoever. But I'm glad that I seem to have pulled it off.
      Should I ever write something that can be published professionally, you'll be the first to know!! Thank you so much!!

        Oh my gosh yes if you ever do write professionally you have to let me know. Just shoot me a message here on AO3 and be all just like, "Yeah, remember me? I wrote that story called The Bravery of a Soldier that you were obsessed with a while ago and I'm just letting you know that i've published [insert book title here] and you should definitely go and read it." And by, like, the next day you'll have a reaply that goes something along the lines of, "Oh WOW, this story is AMAZING! My favourite part was totally when you [insert specifics here] and that plot twist where [insert specifics here] and then that character [insert name here]! I totally hated him/her but they were still my absolute favourite!" And so on and so forth.
        But seriously though. Start thinking about it seriously. *pointed look*

I've still got plans for 2 more Sherlock stories as well as one original one, but my writing time is limited due to work and several shot courses I'm tryin to complete before I start studying towards a MA. I really need to write more though, been writing too much non-fiction lately (job related).

        Excellent. In that case, be honest: What was your favourite scene or chapter? I've been asked to join a local writers' group and now basically have to do a reading for them before they decide whether I can become a full-fledged member. It doesn't matter at the moment that this is fanfiction (and I'll have to translate whatever I decide on to German). I've never been asked to do a reading before and seeing as I've written it, I like it all in equal parts. So, hints please. :) What did you like the most and why? Just to give me an idea of where to start.

        Okay, so my favourite part, my absolute favourite part, as in the I-would-have-lived-my-life-as-only-half-a-life-if-I-hadn't-read-it part... well, give me one second to go and find the exact part in question.
        *few hours pause while I use this as an excuse to just reread the entire fic*
        That part would have to be when they're at the Holmes Manor and Watson has just gotten his medals from the Palace and it's that little section where he makes his speech and all the people stand up and cheer and then the soldiers do their part.
        That bit is my favourite and now I'm going to walk away before I go back and change my mind again! Seriously, you would not believe how many sections I had to whittle it down from!

        Ohhh, I wish I knew what the twelve sections were!
        That speech at the end there was one of the hardest to write in the whole story. I really wanted his "Captain, my Captain" moment :)
        It might give too much away though, as it's the end of the book, so as much as I like that scene, I wouldn't be able to read it to anyone or I'd give too much away.
        I thought maybe Sherlock's dumpster victim deduction and John's Whitehall hallucination though I'm always open to other suggestions ;)
        I really need to get back into writing fiction... busy at the moment with 4 short courses, my job, blog AND the potential start of a MA degree, but I should really make more time to write again. Maybe Sherlock's past this time round. We'll see....

        Okay so two of them were the ones you mentioned and if you give me a little while I'll actually manage to find the file that I save all my favourite sections in (read as: when I finally get my thumb out of the proverbial and get so annoyed with the files cluttering up my drive that I'll actually sort them... read as: probably sometime next year).
        Anyway, if you can't choose the scene where John makes his speech (fair enough, if I'd though about it I'd have made the same connection) then I'd probably say Sherlock's dumpster deduction (*snigger*) would have to be my next submission.
        Yes, yes you really do need to write more Sherlock. I am currently going into withdrawal now from lack of backerstreetgirl fics. Seriously, you need to write more fics soon or my Mum is seriously going to put me into rehab for fanfiction addicts IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT!? ME, FOREVER STUCK IN A WHITE PADDED ROOM BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO POST ANYTHING? HUH? HUH? IS THAT REALLY WHAT YOU WANT!?
        *clears throat and adjusts collar slightly* Anyway, I have a life to get back to (lie) and a metric tonne of homework I haven't done (lie; but only by a technicality) so i really need to wrap this comment up (lie) and OHMYGOSH THAT IS SO ANNOYING I AM SERIOUSLY GOING TO ACTUALLY... submit this comment now, truthfully, so I don't get sectioned by my well-meaning family.         I went with the two I mentioned before, Sherlock's dumpster deduction and the Whitehall hallucination. Especially the hallucination was very well received (yay!) :)

Loved this Gen story completely. ArmyJohn, John with a Guitar, PTSD being a real thing, and a good friendship. I know I have read pieces of this before so why I didn't bookmark it a long time ago is a mystery to me.

Reading this again with great pleasure!
One note on Sherlock's "herbal drops": I regret to say this seems unlikely.
Herbs, plants, are made up of the same physical elements and their chemical properties as the rest of the universe, and both Sherlock and Doctor Watson would be aware their effects are entirely chemical, not something magical and Other. Me, I'm a pro-nature fan from the hippie era, and many of my closest friends are wiccans or other nature worshippers, but it's still true that every medical effect of willowbark or spruce leaves or orange juice is still based on the laws of physics and chemistry.
And Sherlock would know this, so even if he'd encountered some positive herbal effects not known to modern medicine, I can't imagine him doing anything but spending some time experimenting to determine a reliable chemical formula for them.
Of course, that doesn't mean he wouldn't randomly test them on the people around him without warning them, but that's another matter. ;)

Yes, it has been three years since you last updated this, but i am going to hope that every once in a while you check in on reviews or comments. Brilliant. This was absolutely brilliant. You portrayed all characters very well and included details, which although they were minor, were intriguing and smart. I was able to picture everything, especially when the video of John in action was described. Thank you for creating this, for I enjoyed it and felt attached to it. I appreciate it.

You were kind enough to allow me to borrow your prescription of John's bullet wound and subsequent scars for the story I'm in the process of developing. With your permission, I should like to also borrow some other details from the past you've formed for John to add to the one I've already created for him. Is it all right if I do so? This story is incredible.
I also super appreciated all the footnotes. Every tiime I thought “shoot, I need to look that up so I understand better” I got to the end of the chapter and there was a note explaining it. So thank you for those.
Also, spot on with the characterization.
And I enjoyed how you showed the emotional struggles without making them overwhelming.
