Chapter Text
Alear and Alfred were following Alcryst, the second prince of Brodia, with his retainers, Lapis and Citrinne, through the Royal Road towards the Grand Crossing and making their way to meet the Crown Prince Diamant and King Morion. Alear keeps peeking over at the prince, who took a shot at him. Alcryst is attempting to calm his retainers from their interaction a moment ago and reminding them that it was his fault for shooting at the Divine One, and that he should have known better.
“That is enough, Alcryst. If we so easily ambushed the Divine Dragon and the so-called Crown Prince of Firene. Then they are not worthy of being allies of Brodia.” Citrine glared back at the two following close behind.
“I agree with Citrinne. Please, stop blaming yourself, Prince Alcryst. You were protecting the border and us. That's worth more than these two demanding anything from us.” Lapis added a shape tone.
“Now wait a second, I was pointing out that if you had harmed the Divine One, Brodia’s reputation would have been damaged and there would have been consequences.” Alfred defended the women’s attitudes towards them.
“Terribly sorry, Crown Prince Alfred, but we were not talking to you.” Citrinne jabbed at Alfred.
“Wha-!” Alfred stopped in shock.
“Ah, Citrinne!” Alcryst protested.
“I believe this was a conversation between us. I didn’t think it was a Firene custom for people to include themselves in other people's private talks. Shows just how well Firene royals act.” Citrinne smirked. Lapis giggled at the annoyed face Alfred was making.
Alear giggled at his friend’s struggle. The Divine Dragon observed how quickly Alcryst’s retainers were there to defend him after Alferd scolded him for his actions. It was obvious to anyone that the two women loved and respected their prince dearly and were ready to defend him against anyone who could harm him. It was a shame that Alcryst did not seem to have the same view of himself. Retainers, servants, and stewards were there to serve and protect their lords and ladies, but the pure loyalty to a kind and worthy leader is demonstrated by the people who are willing to follow them, rather than just being duty-bound.
“Alright… I sincerely apologize for that. I was unaware that you were speaking to yourself, but certainly your volume and tone could have been heard by an entire army.” Alfred did his best to sound polite, but the twitch of his smile gave his irritation away.
“Oh! Well, if that is the case, then-” Citrinne continued to press before Alcryst stepped in.
“Please enough, Citrinne!” Alcryst interrupted. Citrinne stopped immediately. Shocked at first by the sudden sternness of her prince.
“Crown Prince Alfred, again, I am so sorry for my retainers. Please know they mean no harm, they’re just…” He looks back at his two most trusted retainers and friends. “Protective.” He said quietly, before bowing to the Firene Prince.
“Oh… I mean, it's no problem at all. I may have overstepped myself. I should be the one to apologize.” Alfred became flushed by the Brodian prince’s actions. “As they said, you were just protecting the border, and you had no way to know who we were.”
Alear watched in fascination as the second prince of Brodia was able to step in to break the tension of the conversation. It may have been an odd tactic for the amount of apologizing and bowing, but it got the job done. Even Citrinne and Lapis seemed more cooperative as they all traveled together.
Alcryst then turned towards the Divine Dragon, “Allow me to say this again, Divine One. I am sorry for taking a shot at you!”
Alear smiled gently, recalling the prince referring to him as charming. Right now, the prince was the one in his eyes who was ravishing. “It is all fine. We could have done things better, too. There is no fault with anyone here. Can we all agree on that?”
Everyone nodded their head in unison and continued heading towards the Grand Crossing. As they drew near, Alear began talking to Alcryst.
“Prince Alcryst, I must comment on your archery skills.” Alear reached to touch the area of his cheek where the arrow had slightly grazed him.
The arrow was skilled and powerful. Even as a warning shot, with no intention of killing. Alear knew that shot, that beautifully aimed to graze right beside his cheek, had the precision and power to slay an enemy in one shot. Alear chuckled in remembering the sudden gasp of shock that spiked through his body when he first felt that arrow fly past him, realizing he could have been dead right there.
“No, no, Divine One, I’m really not all that skilled! I just-” Alcryst curled himself in discomfort. Alear observed that the prince really did not know just how amazing he was with a bow.
“He is one of the best archers in Brodia,” Lapis added, her face full of pride for her lord.
“No… Many of them are far more skilled than I am, Lapis. Please do not tell lies to the Divine Dragon.” Alcryst denied. Lapis and Citrinne looked heartbroken at their lord. They knew how wonderful and skilled a person Alcryst was, but he never believed them.
Alear made a mental note to himself that if they got Alcryst and his retainers to join their army, Alcryst would make an excellent archer addition. They had Etie, but having additional archers would be ideal for the upcoming battle.
“Alright, so tell me more about your older brother, Diamant. He’s the Crown Prince of Brodia, right?” Alear is attempting to continue the conversation with Alcryst.
“Yes, Diamant is everything a noble prince should be. Strong, wise, and humble. Unfortunately, he got me as a younger brother.” Alcryst continued to walk forward.
“There really is no need to be so hard on yourself.” Alear tried to convince the prince that he was being so harsh on himself again.
“There is no need to waste your kind words on a worm like me, Divine One. Unfortunately, I am the one to lead you to Brodia Castle, even if there is someone better. I promise I’ll do my best to get you there safely.” Alcryst said while still walking to the Grand Crossing.
“Ah, wait-” Alear wanted to say something, but was stopped by a hand on his shoulders. Looking back, he sees that it was the retainer, Citrinne.
“Thank you for your kindness, Divine One. However, Alcryst won’t believe your words right now.” Lapis smiled with a hint of sadness.
“Yes, we have tried for years to help with Alcryst’s lower view of himself, but unfortunately, the wounds cut deep. His self-esteem is something that has a deep root in his childhood, and cannot be healed right away.” Citrinne looked at her prince.
“Oh… I see. I apologize for interfering in personal matters. It just makes me sad that he views himself that way. Honestly, from what I have already seen, the prince is an excellent archer and seems genuinely compassionate and humble.”
Both Citrinne and Lapis smile at the Divine Dragon. Proud and pleased to know that even the Divine One has acknowledged their prince. This could be the change Alcryst needs to begin gaining some confidence in himself.
“Oh, just wait until you see him in action on the battlefield. Be careful, he may sweep your heart away like he did with Lapis here.” Cirtinne giggled in a playful tease.
“No! That is not true, Citrinne! I just admire Alcryst's bravery and his will to protect those around him!” Lapis quickly defends with a light blush.
Alear blinks in surprise, not expecting such a comment. “Uh.. What-?” Alear begins before hearing Alcryst call out.
“Ah! There it is. The Grand Crossing.” Alcryst announced to the rest of the party, but then he noticed that Elusian soldiers were waiting for them on the Grand Crossing.
After their encounter with the second princess, Hortensia, the battle on the Grand Crossing began. Alear remarks on the trio’s teamwork and how perfectly in sync they are with each other. Lapis takes the front with graceful, yet powerful swipes of her sword. Citrinne was a master of casting spells, but what really caught Alear’s eyes was Alcryst. His need to stand in front of the two to protect them, ordering them to get behind him, and taking one-kill shots left and right with ease. Typically, archers were in the back, but he took to the front on his own. Invading many of the attacks targeted at him with astounding acrobatics and powerful encounters. Alear was impressed, and he was so glad to have the Brodian trio join their army against Sombron.
As the fight continues, Alear focuses his current fight against an axe-wielding Elusian, ready to take the final blow against them; however, a pegasus flyer sweeps up behind him for a surprise attack. The pegasus-flyer enemy’s lance was about to slash across his back; nobody else was nearby, and there was no time for him to dodge or counter. This attack would have been terrible with a serious injury! Thankfully, an arrow suddenly cut across the battle, piercing the Pegasus right between its base of the wing and the spine area. Cause the beast to go out of control in agony. Finally, another arrow came across, hitting the rider straight through the heart.
Alear looked where the arrow was shot from and found Alcryst standing behind his bow, muttering, "I'll apologize later!”
Alcryst ran up beside Alear, “Divine One, are you hurt!? Please get behind me! I'll protect you!” Alcryst extended a hand towards Alear. Who was the charming one here? Right now, it was Alcryst who was being extremely charming and princely in Alear’s eyes!
Badump
“Be careful, he might sweep your heart away.” Citrinne's words echoed in Alear's mind. His eyes go wide. It's like that arrow hit his heart instead of the enemy!
No! Nooooo! Nope! It's just a stressful situation, and everything is running at a high level.
Alear shakes his head and focuses on the battlefield. Taking Alcryst's hand, the two aimed for Hortensia and brought her down together. For their first time fighting together, something just felt right to Alear. It was a perfect fit! Things just clicked, and if they continued to fight and train together, Alear could envision them fighting side by side and winning in the most dire situations.
After the battle, Hortensia unfortunately got away with one of the Emblem rings. Corrupting the Emblem rings. It made Alear sick thinking about it. They needed to find the remaining rings fast and reclaim the stolen rings. He checked on all his allies, but when he came across Alcryst, he felt a large smile naturally spreading across his face.
“Divine One, your leadership and strategy skills in battle are incredible! Honestly, I feel more at ease with you guiding me on where to shoot.” Alcryst praised.
Alear gulped down a nervous lump in his throat, feeling a slight blush spreading on his face. How did hearing praise from Alcryst make him feel anxious, but also excited? He has been receiving praises from many of his allies before, but this hits straight to the heart.
“I just do my best to make sure everyone gets out of the battle safe and sound.” Alear rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment. “Honestly, you saved me big time with that pegasus flyer earlier. Thank you,” Alear praised.
“-!” Alcryst reacted in shock.
“Umm, did I say something wrong? I’m sorry for making you feel uncomfortable." Alear worries.
“No, it's not that. It's just… You probably already noticed that I don't take praise well. I don't feel like I deserve them.” Alcryst confesses and lowers his head.
Alear stays silent, letting Alcryst continue his explanation. “But just now… I honestly didn't mind being complimented by you, Divine One. I really appreciated it. I hope that wasn’t weird to say.” Alcryst shyly tucked his longest hair strand behind his ear.
CUTE!
WHAT THE HELL!!?
Such a simple move, no one would have a second thought about it, but it was making Alear's mind go to places he had never been before. Or at the very least, none that he can clearly remember.
Wait! Cute? Calling another person cute when you have just met them? Is that okay, or is that going into a creep area? !
“N-no, it's not weird at all. I'm honoured that you're okay with it. Actually, am-” Alear smiles, keeping calm and not letting his mind wander.
“Ah! Oh no, what am I doing!? I'm acting so casually with the Divine Dragon. I am so, so sorry! Please excuse my rude behaviour!” Alcryst interrupted and started to bow.
Wait, what just happened? “Ummm, Prince Alcryst, it's alright. Really, I'm just glad that you-” Alear tried to comfort the prince.
“Sorry, now that the bridge is clear, we can head to Brodia Castle. I'll take you there to meet Diamant and my Father.” Alcryst bowed again and headed back towards Lapis and Citrinne.
“Okay…” Alear signed. He felt his shoulder slump. He wanted to talk a bit longer and tell him that he would be honoured if the prince continued to fight beside him.
He suddenly could hear Alfred giggling behind him, “What's so funny, Alfred?” Aleat glares back at his first friend.
“Oh, nothing, buddy! Nothing at all.” Alfred attempted to hold in his giggles. “Feeling a little rejected there, Divine One?”
He noticed… Damn it!
How is the same guy, who is oblivious to Celine’s concerns for her brother’s health or the awkwardness Boucheron felt whenever the prince tended to feel up his muscles, able to see through Alear's disappointment of being cut short by a prince he just met?!
“I don’t know what you are referring to, Alfred, but thank you for your concern,” Alear stated firmly, feeling his eyebrow twitch. Alfred could not stop himself from bursting into laughter at the Divine Dragon sulking.
Alcryst met back with Citrinne and Lapis, getting ready to head back home to the castle. He pulled his hair to calm his nerves. He was so disrespectful to the Divine Dragon just now, acting all casual and too comfortable with a deity! Although it was so easy to talk with him. Alcryst glanced back at the Divine One; those kind, soft eyes were something to be seen, and that graceful smile was something that could capture anyone’s heart.
Strong arms swing the Liberation sword, delivering powerful strikes against enemies while protecting and commanding allies with excellent military precision in strategy. Ultimately, these strengths and determination are demonstrated in the battle. It was incredible—something Alcryst could not convey into words alone. The Divine Dragon truly shone through the ugliest of battle… something Alcryst could never do. Standing beside the Divine One in battle would be an unlikely dream to a worm like him.
“Are we taking a peek at the Divine One, there? Hmmm…. Alcryst?” Citrinne suddenly came into Alcryst’s sight in front of the Divine Dragon. The biggest teasing grin spread all over her face.
Alcryst’s face blossomed as red as a tomato, “AH! Citrinne?! No…No! That’s not- I mean...” Alcryst stuttered out his words.
Citrine giggled at her cousin’s reaction, “I can’t blame you, the guy is stunning to look at. An actual dragon deity. I’m personally intrigued by the man myself.”
“C-Citrinne!” Alcryst fumbled, not sure whether to defend or protest against his cousin’s words.
“Oooh, can you just imagine being tenderly held by the Divine Dragon and being lovingly stared at by those beautiful, mixed-matched eyes! Or going to a ball with the Divine One himself, standing side by side in his arms! All eyes on me as the one chosen by a deity himself!” Citrinne cooed at her fantasies.
“You’d definitely stand out if you were a special person to a dragon,” Lapis added with a light blush. Playing out her own fantasies, but she was never going to share them. Ever.
“Nnnnngh! Just the thought of it could make a girl melt! Maybe even a prince, what do you think of the Divine One there, Alcryst?” Citrinne eyed her blushing cousin.
“No! No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.” Alcryst breathed, “NO! I have no interest in being the center of attention at balls; I would look so out of place with the Divine One!”
Citrinne’s eyebrow raised with a smirk, “Oh, so the idea of being side by side with the Divine One did come into mind? I also noticed you didn’t refuse the idea of being held by him either. Oh! Classic fairy tale, a prince falling in love with a dragon!”
Placing his face in his palms to hide an even deeper blush, “That’s not what I meant! Can we please drop the subject and head to Brodia Castle?”
“Aw, don’t worry so much, Alcryst. I’m only teasing.” Citrinne smiled gently.
Alcryst took a breath and dropped his hands, “Teasing or not. You know, once he knows how weak and worthless I am, he probably won’t even want me as an ally. Much less, even a friend or something else.” Alcryst’s tone turned dark and painful.
Citrinne was stunned by the sudden turn Alcryst made. She did not intend it to turn out like this, but somehow her little teasing just got Alcryst to a darker place. Lapis came in to quickly aid, “That is not true, Prince Alcryst! The Divine One appears to be very kind; he has already welcomed us to the Somniel to rest before heading to the castle.”
“Yeah, but it’s only a matter of time. Come on, let us keep going.” Alcryst halted the conversation and began heading back.
“...” Both Citrinne and Lapis looked at each other in silence.

Finally reaching Brodia Castle and meeting Crown Prince Diamount, Alear sees the brotherly love and respect between the two. Noticing that Alcryst is always putting Diamount before himself and never demanding attention or trying to one-up his older brother. Instead, he supports and makes sure there is less of a burden on Diamount and keeps him stable. As the next king, Alear can sympathize with the crushing responsibility that comes with ruling. Then meeting King Morian was a surprise. Even commenting to Alfred that he was expecting a scary, monster of a man, but seeing how the man supported each of his sons and gave his fatherly advice was so sweet to see. Alfred confirmed that he was like that in the battle; here was his family-man side.
Then the fight with Elusia began. First, they had to deal with Crown Princess Ivy; then they heard that this was all a setup for King Morian. They rushed to the king's aid, but unfortunately, it was too late. King Morian was captured, and the look on Alcryst and Diamant’s faces reminded him of how it was with his mother. Alear noticed the frightened tremor in Diamount's voice at the thought of losing his father. Alcryst remained silent, his eyes wide in horror, like he was still trying to process what was happening. The crashing weight of the realization that war is unpredictable, and anything can happen at any moment. Even the unthinkable can happen right in front of you. However, Alear knows they can win, so long as they have the Emblems. They will always win.
After the preparations were completed for the next battle at Destinea Cathedral, Alear found Alcryst sitting alone underneath a tree by the stable at the Somniel. He was curled up like a ball, with his legs tight against his chest and his hands resting on top of his knees. He was just staring at nothing, but Alear could see his mind was probably going into overdrive. His eyes stared off into the abyss, but his hands were holding his clothes so tightly that his knuckles were white. Very slowly and carefully, Alear approached and sat near the prince, gently calling for his attention.
“Alcryst,” Alear whispered, very carefully placing a hand on top of the other’s.
The Brodian prince jumped, startled from his anxious mind. He looked at the Divine Dragon, and Alear’s heart was about to shatter. He appeared to be holding his breath and just on the verge of breaking down from the stress of the situation. Alear attentively loosened one of Alcryst's hands from his clothes and gave a comforting squeeze.
“Alcryst, breathe. Breathe.” Observing Alcryst taking in a stuttering breath, then exhaling.
“Good, again. Slower this time.” Alear kept his eyes fixed on Alcryst's breathing, waiting as it slowed down, and his eyes were coming back into focus.
“Divine One?” Alcryst’s tone was weak and painful. He was trying to hold back tears. Crying would not help the situation; it would only cause more trouble for others—something Alcryst did not want to cause for people around him.
“It’s okay, I came to get you. We’re ready to head out to Destinea Cathedral.” Alear said.
“Good.” Alcryst’s tone suddenly went cold and dark. Getting up fast, solely focused on getting his father back. That sudden change honestly scared Alear. The second prince usually had a level head in a fight, but this involved his father’s life. Was taking him into this battle the right thing to do? What if he does something hasty?
“Hold on, Alcryst,” Alear called out. Alcryst turned to face the Divine One, “Are you alright to be in this fight? I’m concerned for you and Diamant.”
“Please, keep in the lineup for this fight, Divine One. I need to be there for my brother and my father.” Alcryst defended, concerned he was going to be benched for this fight. Useless as he believed he was, he needed to be there until the very end.
“I can understand that, but you seem ready to do something reckless. I want to make sure you and Diamant don’t do something that will endanger yourselves.” Alear reasoned.
Alcryst frowned. He understood where the Divine One was coming from. Trying to be kind because they had no idea what could be waiting for them. King Morian, his father, is likely already dead. However, the slightest hope remains that they will make it on time, and his father will come home safe and sound.
“Divine One, remember what you said to me?” Alear waited in silence, not sure where Alcryst was going with this. “You said that I should stand more and do things my way. Going to Destinea Cathedral and fighting to save my father is something I need to do. I know all too well what the possibilities are and… I want to be there to face them.” Alcryst announced his determination.
Alear’s eyes went wide in amazement, just like when he witnessed Alcryst taming and befriending their wolf friend. His advice was taken to heart, and somehow, a sense of pride came over Alear. His words affected Alcryst, and he stood taller for it, which made Alear proud to call the archer his ally and friend.
“Okay, let’s get going then. We have the Emblems and our allies. I know we can win.” Alear smiled with confidence.
“Thank you, Divine One.” Alcryst sighed in relief. They headed off, meaning with the rest and departing for Destinea Cathedral.
Unfortunately, that sliver of hope was crushed by the reality of what the Divine Army faced in Destinea Cathedral, the horrible and cruel fate of turning a father into a mindless, corrupted monster. Forced to attack his sons, and the sons needing to retaliate. Alear gritted his teeth at the disgusting cruelty of violating the king’s body and forcing family to kill one another.
Diamant was the first hit against his father. “Was I a good son? I guess I should have asked you that sooner.” Diamant whispered. He took up his sword to slice through his father’s chest, but not enough to bring him down. Diamount readied for another strike, but his hands were shaking and his resolve was quickly wavering. He could not do it. He lacked the strength within him to finish it.
However, stepping to the front was Alcryst; he knew this was something that would break Diamant’s heart. He had to protect his wonderful older brother. “Father… if you have to die, let it be by my hand. This would be a terrible burden on Diamant. Thank you for everything. I love you. I always will.”
Alcryst’s arrow pierced the air with the power and resolve that was needed to free his father from this corrupted state. Striking straight into the heart, bringing King Morian to the ground. Final words whispered from the corps hit the Brodian princes, “Raa…argh… Strong of body… Strong of heart.”
Their father’s soul was freed, but it did not hurt any less. Alear observed the Brodian princes, especially Alcryst, as he saw his hands clenched in a tight fist and shaking. That was heartbreaking to watch, but the incredible kindness Alcryst showed touched Alear’s heart. To avoid placing the burden on Diamant, Alcryst took on the responsibility of bringing their father down. Alear wanted to talk with Alcryst, but they were still in the middle of a battle. Their final target was King Hyacinth, but it was all a trap.
Marth warned him, but Alear’s ego got the best of him. He believed that as long as they had the rings, they would win; additionally, Alcryst’s and Diamant’s pleas to stay for their father’s body all came with their fall. The Emblems were stolen, and the group was on the run from Veyle and the Four Hounds through Shadowy Moor, surrounded by the Corrupted soldiers and closely pursued by formidable enemies. If Ivy, Kagetsu, and Zelkov had not switched sides and come to aid them, it was highly possible one or more allies would have been lost that day. They were able to awaken Lucina and Lyn, but the defeat was a hard one. Lessons were learned, and they needed to get back up and keep moving forward.
__________________________________________________________
Easier said than done. After the death of King Morian and losing their collective rings, Alear sits on his bed, his forehead resting on his interlocked hands. He felt like an idiot. The decisions he could have made better, and the actions he could have taken to prevent the whole thing. The recurring image of all the Emblems, his friends, being corrupted. Losing all of them… losing… Marth. Sighing in frustration and regret.
It was currently dusk outside. The sky was coloured in a beautiful mix of oranges, pinks, and purples. It has been a couple of days since the battle in Destinea Cathedral. Everyone needed time to recover physically and mentally. Alear chooses to stop sulking in his room and heads out to check on his friends. Many were just fine, but Diamant was still grieving his father. However, he reassures the Divine Dragon that he will recover and be ready for the next battle. Finally, Alear went looking for the younger prince, but Alcryst was nowhere to be found. Anxiety began to build as Alear searched the entire area of Somniel, with no sign of the archer in sight.
Alear tried to talk to Alcryst earlier after he got defensive with Ivy, but Alcryst stated he was fine and the Divine Dragon should focus on Diamant’s mental condition. Alear did as requested, giving Alcryst time to process everything and conducting regular checks on Diamant. However, now it was time to focus on how Alcryst was doing, whether he agreed with it or not.
Still unable to find Alcryst anywhere around the main building of the Somneil, Alear was close to having a panic attack! When he was having trouble locating the prince, his mind started to go into some dark ideas. What if he went off somewhere alone to grieve and was attacked by the enemy? Maybe the pain of taking your parent’s life caused him to think about taking his own life? He should have focused on Alcryst more because he was the one who ended it with his hand. Alear could not even imagine the pain Alcryst was going through at this moment. He was the one Alear… What was he to Alear? He was the one Alear was getting genuinely attached to.
Shit.. I should never have left him alone this long.
Running down the path towards Lookout Ridge, as if he were the avatar in a video game, he spotted a thin figure looking out in the distance at the cliff. Just standing in silence towards the open clouds of the heavens, Alear was able to let himself breathe in relief. He stopped near the fire pit area to catch his breath. Massaging his forehead in an attempt to relax the stress he just put his mind through, and wiping off any sweat on his face. Taking a deep breath to calm himself, he called out for the prince and walked towards him.
“There you are, Alcryst. I was looking for you.” Alear came beside the prince. He was never going to mention his mental freak-out or how hard he was running all over the place.
“Good evening, Divine One.” Alcryst nodded. Not saying anything else to engage in a conversation.
Alear observed that Alcryst was just staring blankly out into the horizon; his hands were not tight, and his eyes looked emotionless. He was still processing everything, and he probably had not talked to anyone, having to shoulder it all by himself. Although Alear knew Citrinne, Lapis, and Diamount checked on him, but Alcryst probably did not share his troubles with them. Not wanting to be a burden to them with his grief.
“I wanted to check on you.” Alear carefully looked over the archer's body for any injuries that still needed to be tended.
“Don’t concern yourself with me, Divine One. Just focus on Diamant. I’m fine.” Alcryst’s tone was dry and flat. Alear knew that was the answer he would get. It was probably the same for his retainers. This time, Alear was not having it.
“No,” Alear replied a bit too sharply—shocking Alcryst out of his trance.
“Huh?” Alcryst questioned.
“No, I will not just focus on Diamant. I did what you asked, I checked on him regularly. He is in pain and is grieving, but now I want to focus on you.” Alear clarified.
“I’m fine, Divine One. Please don’t waste your time on me. It’s not worth it… I’m not worth it.” Alcryst wrapped himself with his one arm, curling in discomfort.
Yes, should have expected this .
Sometimes Alear wondered if Alcryst was simply putting himself down due to a lack of self-esteem or if he was being stubbornly humble. Probably both, but either way, he knew just pressing him would not change anything. If he kept asking, Alcryst would keep shutting him down, so Alear needed him to open himself willingly. Changing his approach differently, and he area they were in was perfect for that. Everyone else was currently in the Cafe Terrace for dinner. It is Boucheron on cooking duties today, so people should be enjoying a well-cooked meal. They are presently alone right by the fire pit.
“Alright, if that’s the case,” Alear tried to be casual. “Then, since you’re free, and the weather is cooling down. Join me by the fire.” Alear gently grabbed Alcryst’s hand and guided him towards the fire pit.
“Huh?! B-But shouldn't you be getting dinner or doing something with someone else?” Alcryst assumed Alear was just being his usual generous self. Checking on all his allies after every battle, making time for each person to get to know them better. Alcryst was nothing special; the Divine Dragon would enjoy his time better with someone else, like his brother. Diamant was probably suffering more than he was.
“No, I don’t feel like eating right now, and enjoying a nice fire with you sounds like a delightful idea.” Alear smiles at Alcryst while he starts a fire with the fire starters they have set aside.
“Oh, okay…” Alcryst sat down in a seat by the fire, watching the Divine One start a fire like a regular human person. Honestly, it crossed Alcryst’s mind that he had never seen Alear’s dragon form.
“That’s because I don’t know how to transform or if I can.” Alear answers with a smile.
“Oh, no, no. I’m sorry, Divine One! Did I voice my thoughts?” Alcryst covered his face in embarrassment.
“Hahaha, well, yeah, obviously you did, but it’s fine.” Alear got up after the fire was burning intensely and sat beside Alcryst.
They sat in silence for a moment, letting the hypnotising flames calm their souls, then Alear began to talk again, “You know, after waking up from a 1000-year sleep, I don’t remember anything from before falling asleep. So I can’t remember how to turn into a dragon. My mother could, so I assume I can, but I never got the chance to ask her. Truth is, I didn’t even recognize Queen Lumera as my mother.” Alear confessed
Alcryst was shocked to hear that, “Really? You don’t remember anything?” Alcryst asked.
“No, everything is still hazy. When I try to remember anything, nothing comes to me. When I woke up, it was as if I were meeting my mother for the first time. That probably made me the worst son in history. She watched over me all that time, and I couldn’t recognize her at all.” Alear looked down at the flames with a sad smile.
Alcryst stayed silent; he had no idea how to respond to that or the words that could provide some comfort. He watched as Alear took another breath to continue.
“Just before Lythos Castle was attacked, she mentioned she wanted to give me a birthday gift, one that she had waited for 1000 years to give to me once I woke up. She died protecting me before she had the chance.” Alear’s voice cracked at remembering the day.
“I’m sorry for your loss, Divine One. I only met Queen Lumera a couple of times when I was a child. My father took me and Diamant to Lythos Castle to meet with your mother. She was so gentle and kind to us.” Alcryst smiled, recalling the meetings with the beautiful woman. “She took us to see you once.”
“Oh? I know Alfred and Celine mentioned they came to visit me many times, but not so much the people of Brodia.” Alear commented with curiosity.
“The people of Firene are devout followers of the Divine Dragon, so I’m not surprised they go often. Brodia tends to be all about strength and power.” Alcryst muttered in slight annoyance.
“True, so tell me how your experience was on visiting me?” Alear peered back at Alcryst.
Thinking back, even as a child, Alcryst found the Divine Dragon Alear a radiant and beautiful being to look upon. Seeing him in his sleeping form for the first time was something he remembered very clearly from his childhood, because his father teased him afterwards about how big his eyes got in wonder, and how he gave his father problems when it was time to leave, he wanted to stay longer. Both Queen Lumera and his father laughed at his excitement and enthusiasm. His father commented on how this was a rare occurrence in his youngest, how Alcryst was always soft-spoken and never argued with him or his mother.
There is another vivid memory of Queen Lumera saying something else to him, but it was hazy. He can not remember the rest, unfortunately. He chuckled at the memory, and he bit his lip to keep from crying when remembering his father’s laughter.
“I would say you were the same you are now,” Alcryst was careful not to mention the beautiful or radiant part. “Sleeping soundly and difficult to wake up.”
Alear raised an eyebrow and smiled, happy that Alcryst felt more at ease joking with him, “Oh, dare you.” Both were chuckling at the light jabbing.
Both settled in a comfortable silence, simply enjoying the warm comfort of the fire and each other’s company. As Alear continued to look at the flame, his one dream that had kept haunting him came to mind.
Alear gripped the ground, “There is something that has been repeating in my dreams since I woke up, I haven’t told anyone. Not even Vander…” Alear looked off the side.
Not ever the Divine Dragon’s knight, Alcryst was curious, but he did not want to overstep. “Ah- are you sure you want to tell me then?”
“I want to tell you. I feel right telling you about it. We are on equal footing, and I trust you, Alcryst.” Alear gave the most radiant and kindest smile Alcryst has ever seen.
“You keep saying that, but are we really on equal footing?” Alcryst questioned.
“I’d like to believe we are. I trust you to share my more profound thoughts. One day, I hope you feel comfortable enough with me. No pressure. And I can’t count how many times you had my back in battles.” Alear stated with confidence.
“I know you have helped me out multiple times. Both in battle and outside.” Alcryst agreed.
“I’m glad I could do something to help. You’ve protected me, and I’ve protected you. Ultimately, we protect one another. I’d say we are on equal footing, right?” Alear reasoned, giving the prince a warm smile.
“Right… Thank you for trusting me with this.” Alcryst blushed and gave a thin, shy smile back. Alcryst did not smile often, so little moments like this were a win in Alear’s books.
“In this dream, I see myself, only with both eyes, and my hair is entirely red. Dressed in black, I’m surrounded by flames with bodies all around me, and I’m covered in their blood. The ‘me’ always looks back at me with a sinister grin of pure evil before I wake up in a panic. That dream honestly scares me more than the Corrupted does.” Alear confesses, poking at the fire.
Alcryst is in shock; that dream sounds horrible. He can never imagine Alear looking evil. The man was the kindest person Alcryst has ever met. Also, the Divine Dragon was afraid of something; he could sympathize with a bad dream, but Alcryst had no idea the Divine One was scared of the Corrupted.
“I didn’t know you were scared of the Corrupted. We fight them so often, but you are always at the front fighting with such fearless strength.” Alcryst turned his body towards Alear, “And this dream, you could never be evil, Divine One. You are way too kind for that.”
Alear turned towards Alcryst with a smile, “Thank you. I tell myself it’s just a dream, but something about it makes me feel anxious. As for dealing with the Corrupted, I had to overcome the fear of them. So I could lead our army and ensure we didn’t lose any more allies. I’ve already failed my mother’s wishes once, losing the Emblems we collected, and my actions almost got everyone killed. I don’t ever want that to happen again.”
Alcryst nodded his head in sympathy, “A-are you still afraid, Divine One?”
“I’m afraid every time we go into battle, Alcryst,” Alear confessed, feeling so relieved to get that off his chest finally. Vander always stated that he was the leader of their army and that he had to stand firm, showing no weakness or fear. Alear smiles at having Alcryst here to share his worries, knowing he can trust him with his true feelings.
Alear continues, “I am terrified that my decisions will get you or anyone else killed, like how my choices probably got your father killed. I don’t want to lose you or any of our friends, like we did Marth and the other Emblems.”
“No, you were not the one who got my father killed! It was Veyle, the Hounds, and Sombron! We all rush to get there as fast as possible! We were just…” Alcryst clenched his fists. “We were too late.” Alcryst choked back tears.
Hearing about all of Alear’s fears and concerns reminded Alcryst of just how much of a regular person the Divine Dragon Alear was. He has just as many weaknesses and doubts as everyone else, including his brother, Diamant. Alcryst just recently learn that his mighty and perfect brother feared facing off against mages. He always imagined his brother was not afraid of anything. That he was perfect in every way, he believed the same towards the Divine Dragon. However, they all faced fears and issues every day. It warmed his heart that the Divine One was open to him about all he had learned about him tonight.
“Divine One, can I confide in you about something?” Alcryst's body began to shake; he could no longer hold back the tears.
“Of course you can.” Alear took hold of Alcryst’s hand in comfort, hoping it would encourage Alcryst to continue.
“I’m scared about losing my brother and being left all alone. I didn’t think my powerful father could be killed, but it happened! He’s gone and I’ll never see him again!” Tears poured from Alcryst’s eyes.
“I know it had to be done… My father was corrupted and needed to be set free, but I still feel like my father’s blood is all over my hands. I chose to end it myself to protect Diamant, but after the battle ended, it felt like I murdered my father! Part of me knows it’s not Ivy’s fault, but I want to scream at her for what her father did! I didn’t want you… Or my brother to find out how I felt because I thought I looked pathetic!” Alcryst cried harder as he let everything out over the last couple of days.
Alear wrapped his arms around Alcryst’s body and gently tugged him in closer. Tucking the prince’s face into his shoulder.
“I will never consider you pathetic. I have seen what an incredible and kindhearted person you are. I hope you see that for yourself one day. I’ve had my moments of being pathetic too. At the Cethidrial, I could do nothing but beg and plead for them to stop. I felt powerless to do anything. You are not alone in this.” Alear stroked his back and held his head in tenderness.
Alcryst began to pull away, believing that it was inappropriate for him to cry on Divine One’s shoulder, but Alear halted his movement with a light squeeze.
“No, it’s okay. I want you to be here. Don’t worry about anything and just let everything out.” Alear whispered comfort in Alcryst’s ear, stroking his hair.
Alcryst chose to let everything go; he held onto Alear’s shirt as if it were his only lifeline. His tears ran down his face like a river soaking the Divine One’s shoulder and staining his face. All his regret, grief, and even some of his frustration toward himself and the people around him came pouring out in waves. It was likely that this was the hardest Alcryst had ever cried before. Usually, he keeps everything to himself and does not let Diamant, Citrinne, or Lapis know his inner struggles. Alear stays quiet the whole time, not letting Alcryst go for even a second, allowing the prince to cry out everything he needed to get out. Checking ever so often to make sure no one was coming close. He wanted this moment just between him and Alcryst, nobody else. That sense of protectiveness came over him, making sure to hold him close and not letting go.
Time passed, and Alcryst’s cries began to slow down. It could have been hours or seconds later, Alear did not care. He still held the prince in a comforting tightness until the cries came to a stop, and Alcryst’s arms went limp. Checking to make sure Alcryst was alright, Alear gently turned Alcryst over to lay his head down onto his lap. The poor prince fell asleep from exhaustion. All of that crying and releasing the tension from his body finally allowed his body to finally relax.
He probably hasn’t slept since the day they raided the cathedral.
With Alcryst lying on Alear’s lap, the Divine Dragon was able to notice the prince’s facial features better. The young man had dark circles under his eyes, likely due to a lack of sleep from anxiety keeping him up late at night. Although he looked at peace right now, his usually tense eyebrows were relaxed. His long eyelashes still had tears peeking out from them, and Alear gently wiped away any remaining tears. Peeking down at the prince’s lips, they were thin and a lovely shade of pink. Alear had noticed it before, when stroking his head in comfort, but now, with a better touch, Alcryst had the silkiest hair he had ever felt on his fingers. His hair was a beautiful midnight blue, and with the silver of the moonlight, it had an enchanting effect.
With the notice of moonlight, Alear broke himself out of his trance and noted that it was already dark out. Very carefully, without disturbing Alcryst, he put out the fire and picked up the prince, carrying him back to his room and making a mental note to avoid anybody close by. Knowing Alcryst would be embarrassed to be seen being held like a princess by the Divine One. Alear giggled at the likely reactions of the prince if he knew, but continued to his room. When he arrived, he got to admire just how easy it was to carry him here and how nicely he fit in his arms.
So cute.
He took care to lay Alcryst down tenderly and was respectful, removing only his shoes, jacket, and any other clothing that would be uncomfortable to sleep in. Once Alcryst appeared satisfied on his bed, Alear cleaned the tear stains from his face and lightly stroked his bangs out of his face. Letting his eyes roam the prince’s sleeping face again, Alear allowed his hand to drift down from Alcryst’s hair, to stroke his cheeks, across his jaw softly, and finally glide to poke his index finger at Alcryst’s lips.
What would it be like to hear my name from these lips?
Alear uncoussiously brought the finger, which was just touching Alcryst’s lip, up to his and gave it a lick.
What would they taste and feel like? I really want to kiss him.
No!
Alear shook out his thoughts. There was no consent on whether Alcryst would be alright with that or not. However, Alear had to admit that he absolutely enjoyed those moments by the fire with Alcryst. He was able to discuss and share things he had not been able to do with anyone else in the army, and he knew without a shred of doubt Alcryst would keep it to himself. His feelings for the prince were developing strongly. Alear wanted to treat Alcryst with care and show him just how wonderful he truly was. Was this considered love? Whatever this feeling is, it’s warm and pleasant—definitely, not a family warmth, but something much deeper and primal.
I want to cherish you.
Sitting beside Alcryst on his bed, Alear gave some more gentle, loving strokes to his bangs before bending down to kiss the young prince on his forehead.
“Sleep and dream well, Alcryst.” Alear smiled in satisfaction.
Alear left Alcryst’s room quietly with a skip in his steps. Something about these newfound feelings filled Alear with a sense of glee that had him smiling from ear to ear. He wanted to have another talk with Alcryst again later, as he had been able to get so much off his chest. After tonight, Alear just felt so much lighter with the heaviness off his shoulders. He made his way back to his bedroom to get the rest he also needed.
