It’s Christmas Eve, and Dean, Sam and Castiel are snowed into a small town with a big festive spirit. They splurge on a fancy room in a B&B – hey, they deserve a treat. There’s a tiny plastic tree and a working TV, so they could perhaps overlook the lack of hot water and Dean having to bunk with Sam. Sleeping arrangements soon reach a happier equilibrium: Dean’s just cuddling Cas to keep him warm, he swears – the tingly feeling means nothing! Christmas Day arrives, and Cas still doesn’t have a gift for Dean. Dean doesn’t know what to give Cas, either. Sam has a few ideas, but will the other two truly understand what he means?

Wrong! It’s the kitchen. Of all places and Sam feels like the biggest creep alive, because in those seconds of shock, as his mind begins to process what he’s seeing, he remains completely immobilised. It’s like all the bandwidth from his normal functions has been entirely converted into the energy needed to process this – this – occurrence.

“With Michael.” He sees Dean’s face change. “And the Ma’lak box.”
His voice drops as the bad memory resurfaces. The call from Sam, frantically explaining that something was wrong… that he was headed to Mary’s to figure it out. He’d begged him to head back to the bunker to start working out what was wrong with Dean. He remembers the way Sam had sat him down and explained to him gently what Dean wanted to do.
“You never called me. Sam got a goodbye. Donna. You spent time with Mary.” He tries and fails to keep the bitterness and jealousy out of his voice.
Dean clears his throat awkwardly. “I was going to call you.”
“When?”
“I was.”
“Really?” he demands. “And what were you going to say?”
“I was going to call you.” he insists
“Dean…” he swallows. “What would you have said?”
Dean stands suddenly. “Honestly, Cass. I was never going to call you.”
He finds himself at a loss for words. “But you just said...”
“I know.” Dean says gently. “But I wasn’t going to call you. I was going to pray to you.”

Summary
When Sam leaves for a date with Eileen during a short reprieve from everyhting going on at the moment, Dean lets himself have a bit of a cry.
He mulls over the idea of what would happen if he prayed to Castiel in a moment of lonliness, asking only for some company.
A surprised Castiel shows up in the kitchen of the bunker, wondering why Dean prayed to him asking for comfort, something he never thought would happen. They spend some time together and Castiel soon learns that the friend he has such a profound bound with feels much deeper emotions for him.

Dean has a mid-life crisis at 31 and ends a twelve-year relationship with Cas. He briefly tries to find the life he thinks he's been missing out on, but quickly finds that the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence. When Dean finally comes to his senses, hurt Cas isn't so forgiving and is determined to move on with his life.
What was meant to be a simple fling turns into a nightmare and threatens the lives of both Dean and Cas.

Paradise… it smelt like pie, because, as Castiel had realised, he was in the kitchen.
Dean’s eyes gleamed with mirth, his features sunken and his wrinkles more pronounced, but happy. Alive. Castiel had blinked in shock as a finger dripping with apple pie sauce was pressed up to his lips.
In that moment he had yearned, let the paradise seep into his veins. He really believed it. That Jack could let them have this. Sam, happy with someone who loves him without changing him. Castiel balks at the accusing voice as he pulls himself of the tar like substance and his deep slumber.
The Empty roars. “I’m cranky.” It sneers. “I can’t sleep. That does not bode well for you little angel.”
Jack damaged the Empty itself. It makes sense that the Shadow created this place to be t’s perfect habitat - a place where it could sleep without any disruptions.
"You could let me go.” He says boldly, the thought of returning, of seeing Dean again, emboldening him.
“Now why would I do that?”
“Because you want me to suffer.” he says.
“Yes…” It drawls. “And you will.”
“But I won’t.” He can’t stop the jubilant smile that forms on his face. “I won’t suffer because I’m happy.”
It scowls, Meg’s face twisting in confusion. “But you don’t have Dean.”
“And I never would have.” He states. “But I got the chance to tell him - what he means to me, that he’s worth something, everything. I got to tell him I love him. And he got to hear me… really hear me. So yes, I’m incredibly, undeniably happy.”

Cass’ nose is almost poking Dean’s eye out but his face is the picture of concentration as he pinches Dean’s nose between his thumb and fore-finger, his other hand covering Dean’s mouth completely.
“Okay. What the hell?” he announces.
The thumb war is explainable, the twister was actually nice and though the dancing was strange, it has nothing on this.
“You two having a staring contest?” Sam wonders.
“No Sam.” Cass explains, picking up the stop watch. “Dean said he could hold his breath for two minutes. I didn’t believe him.”
“Ha-ha! Sucker!” Dean wheezes as the watch beeps.
“Though,” Cass rubs his chin in consideration, “A staring contest is a very good idea Dean.”
Then they both sit pull up a chair and sit, bending forward to rest their elbows on their knees in a way that pushes their faces even closer.
“Let’s begin.” Cass announces.
Dean nods once, then they stare.
By now Sam should be used to it. But as bad as they may be, they’ve never stared at each other for over two minutes before.
…
Sam is flabbergasted.
Cass is engineering these… games, in order to get closer to Dean. Physically closer.
And Sam wants to know why.
