Summary
“Double or nothing,” Chimney declared across the fire loft station, eyes narrowed at Buck.
In the middle of the table was a pile of cheesy Dorito chips that they were using instead of money. The game had started halfway through their shift. Whenever they had down time, they had returned to it. The bell had yet to go and they were taking advantage of the spare time.
Buck snorted, shaking his head. “No way. Last time I did that I ended up with millions.”

Summary
“You ok superman?”
“The… the waves are getting quite close.” Chris said, voice quiet, not wanting the other children to overhear. His hand remained fisted in the white fabric.
Buck swallowed heavily, nodding. “Do you remember learning about the tide?”
“How the moon pulls at the ocean?”
“Yeah, just like that. Well the tide comes in land twice a day, and it goes out twice a day. This is the second high tide.”
“So… this is normal?”
Buck nodded again, “Very normal.”
Chris hummed, fist loosening. “Promise?”
Buck smiled, offering his pinky finger wordlessly. Chris hooked his own around it, standing taller.
“It’s not that I was scared,” Chris said, “I know you’d save me again. I just - I thought I’d check.”
He turned around, walking away before Buck could argue that he hadn’t saved him last time. Eddie’s gaze burned into his cheek.

Summary
Buck didn't recognize the car, so at first he just carried on like normal. The car was pretty badly damaged, but Buck was able to reach through the broken window to check the driver's pulse. It was weak, but steady. He leaned his head in slightly to check the backseat, and it was suddenly like all of the air had been sucked out of his lungs. He hardly noticed the second kid, the one behind the driver's seat.
He was too busy staring with mounting horror at the familiar kid on the passenger side. Not just any kid—his kid.
"Chris!" Buck's voice didn't even sound like his own, almost shrill in his terror. Christopher didn't even stir, but Buck's keen eyes registered that his chest was rising and falling—he was breathing. Still breathing, even if Buck felt like he couldn't.
OR
When the 118 responds to a pile-up, one of the cars turns out to belong to Christopher's friend, with Chris himself in the backseat.

Summary
Words couldn’t quite describe the feelings that had taken root in Buck these past few weeks. Like a tree, a small seed was planted and it just continued to grow, spreading its limbs to every part of Buck’s soul.
Hurt. Anger. Helplessness.
Buck just felt so…stuck. Trapped in a place he never wanted to be, but can’t find the strength to leave, because there is comfort here. Who knows what he will find on the other side. It could be worse than where he already is.
Buck had his routine. Wake up, go to work, come home, wallow in self pity, repeat. He can admit it wasn’t the greatest or healthiest routine, but it was better than nothing.
Or: Buck has been having feelings lately as he refuses to let go of the thing causing him pain. He is desperate to ignore them. Eddie is trying to help him work through them.

Summary
Recently, there has been a strange pull whenever he gets close to his best friend. Something sharper, heavier than his usual skin hunger, an itch that seems impossible to scratch. At first Buck chalks it up to the usual clinginess, like it’s some kind of side effect showing up after ignoring it for so long.
But this thing seems a little different and he doesn’t understand it. He feels so lost and frustrated, especially when he’s forced to curl his hands into fists just to prevent himself from leaning over and bite the tendon of Eddie’s forearm while they’re bent over the same sheet of paperwork.
Or Five Times Buck takes everything Eddie's willing to give, and one time it's Eddie who takes everything Buck wants to give.
