Brand did not survive the attack on the Sun Estate which cost Rune everything. For twenty years, his ghost has lingered, his bond with Rune holding them together even in death. But Brand has learned over twenty years how to protect his scion, and Rune would never give up what they have, even if people think him mad. Or - Brand is a Poltergeist, and still keeping Rune safe.

Summary

“You know, Brandon,” Addam says levelly, “going to someone’s house generally involves getting out of the car first.”
That’s when Brand realizes that they have been parked in front of the house in silence for two full minutes. He rolls his eyes. “Whatever. Do you have the beer?”
Addam blinks at him. “You can’t possibly have been serious about that.”
“What? They drink beer! When you get invited to an American’s home, you bring a six-pack or a tuna casserole. Everyone knows that, man!”
“He’s sort of right, I think,” Rune chimes in. “Or cupcakes. Damn, we should have gone for cupcakes.”
“I picked a bottle of red wine,” Addam tells them patiently. “And chocolates. We are not bringing your mother Bud Light on our first visit.”
Rune perks up at the mention of wine and chocolates, so Brand lets it go. The man’s probably right, too. “I got a few bumper stickers too, just in case.”
A pause. “Bumper stickers?” Addam repeats, sounding half horrified, half exhausted. It’s a tone no one else masters quite as perfectly in Brand’s opinion, and although he’s trying to be careful, he uses it frequently around Rune and Brand.Series

An awkward silence grows in the space between them. Addam has a sudden inane urge to comment on the weather. It has been beautiful and sunny lately but surely he can come up with something else to talk about with his future husband.
"What are your hobbies?" he asks instead. "Do you like to dance?"
Rune shrugs and grimaces. "Two left feet," he says apologetically. "I don't do much besides work."
A finger comes subconsciously to his mouth and he bites at a hangnail. Addam realizes suddenly that he must be as nervous as he feels himself.

Addam is cornered into an arranged marriage. He knows nothing of his new fiancé and they only have a month until they're married. What could go wrong?

They deposit him on the front steps of the narrow house. Somehow Max expected more pomp and flair between the ravaging of one court's demise and the redistribution of its wealth and things. Things including one seventeen year old former groom of a now-dead Lord Hanged Man. Things including him.
In some ways it's a relief to finally be free of Lord Hanged Man's clutches. The only thing is, he's not sure if Lord Sun is worse.

There's a coat strewn on the porch outside the door and it catches his attention long enough that he steps off the doormat and falters.
Brand is standing in the yard, practice sword in his hand except that it's not a practice sword at all, it's live steel. There are bodies lying in the grass around him, stained crimson. They're small - children, not adults - and Rune can't breathe.
"Brand?" he whispers. Brand turns to look over his shoulder, his eyes cold like Rune has never seen them before.

Waking up to a pounding hangover headache was not a completely foreign concept to Max, but it wasn’t a frequent one, so he still found it to be a nuisance. Waking up in an unfamiliar dimly lit room with foamy, soundproofed walls, though, was indeed foreign to him, so that he found to be a bit more worrisome.
And that was before he tried reaching up to rub at his temples, only to discover the enchanted silver cuffs around both wrists. The chains threaded down through the back of a chair and around his ankles, securing all four limbs behind him.
--Max is kidnapped by an old acquaintance of his, on orders from his uncle. Rune gets caught in the crossfire.

Max nods, and he’s already panicking about what to respond to that when Brand continues:
“To tell you the truth, I don’t think Rune likes camping either. So, really, it’s more likely that I’ll be the one at a disadvantage, having to hear the both of you complain.”

Summary
A lot of things change after the disaster in the Westlands. Rune is getting courted. He has a teenager to somehow see through to adulthood. Eyes are swiveling back to the son of the fallen Lord Sun, which is hardly what he wants, but their jobs keep money flowing into Half House, and that's good enough.
The only anchor in Rune's life is the one he's always had: Brand, ready and willing and able to go to war.
OR, after The Last Sun, the secret Rune buried in the bottom of his heart at 13 years old slowly breaks out.
