Summary
In 36 B.C., Marcus Aemilius Lepidus was forced into exile in Circeii by Octavius Caesar (later Emperor Augustus). Here, he meets Avilius Postumius Albinus, a younger Roman with a sheltered upbringing who fled into exile at the end of 44 B.C. due to his association with Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus, one of Julius Caesar's assassins.
Years later, in 30 B.C., Lepidus finally decides to open up to Avilius about his political career to give him a better understanding of the political situation in the late Republic. However, this act of sharing ends up being about more than just politics when Lepidus eventually opens up not only about his career but also his past.
