Charles blocked him from the shelf. "What's wrong with it?"
Edwin tried to dodge around Charles to put the book away, which didn't work at all. Crystal snorted. "It requires more energy than I possess," Edwin said quickly, and made a final dodge around Charles, succeeding thanks to the distraction.
The book got up on the shelf and Edwin stalked back to his desk, grabbing another book up seemingly at random and preparing to stick his nose in it. Charles put his hand on it and pushed it down. "That's what I'm for," he said, which Crystal didn't understand at all. Stupid magic boys.

As Crystal rips the breathing tubes off of her face, she finds herself waking up with a gunshot wound healed in her stomach, yes, but also she finds herself gasping in the air of a dead world.
And when she grabs the closest thing she has to a weapon- a heavy bedpan, because she’s a detective, not a fucking idiot- she wanders out into the hallways to find lights flickering over dead bodies littered everywhere, gunshots through the heads, with a warning a warning painted on the walls in what might be read spray paint but the evidence points to a very different answer entirely: THE DEAD WALK THROUGH HERE.

The initial trade is an easy one; one memory apiece, as long as the circle holds. One happy memory. (The happiest memory, some might say.) That’s it.
Monty offers up a memory of their first kisses, that giggling trip to a playground in London in order to “rewrite bad memories.” (What a mess, now.) Crystal offers up the day that they’d saved Niko, and she was finally able to wrap her arms around Niko’s shoulders for the first time in over a year. Edwin offers up his memory of escaping hell the second time around with Monty and Charles and collapsing into their arms on the floor of Crystal’s bedroom. Niko offers up the memory of them all at movie night, her snuggled into Crystal’s arms, Crystal kissing her forehead. Charles offers up his memory of the last date that he and Monty and Edwin went on.
Except…there’s a trick to it.
