Gale's reaction was like the hiccup of a heartbeat. His gentle hands suddenly tensed around my face, then released just as quickly and stroked my cheek in apology.
"Tav, did you just say—? Taveela, can you hear me?"
His face swam in and out of my vision as a new wave of the burning heat roared through my veins. He held onto me with delicate care, but the intensity of his gaze bored into my soul.

Years after the defeat of the Absolute, things have settled down for Halsin, Astarion, and Zakai. Arkadios is growing up surrounded by a loving pack, New Reithwin is thriving, and everything is looking up... at least until Zakai's old bardic order makes an appearance. The Order of the Crimson Oleander doesn't accept resignations, instead they will take what they consider theirs and return it to where it belongs.
Halsin and Astarion aren't about to let their beloved mate go without a fight, even if that means following him into the Underdark, to the very seat of drow power that is the City of Spiders. They'll need all the help they can get to see him safely returned, so hopefully their old friends are up to the task and some new allies won't stab them in the back...

“I want you to,” Ari replied without thinking, and something primal inside her crowed a victory as Karlach clenched her fists and dropped her head back to lean against the door, and Shadowheart’s pupils blew so wide Ari could hardly see the soft green of her irises.

Astarion ran away from his Alpha after 200 years of torment and torture in the hopes of finding someplace safe. He finds the grove and finds unlikely allies in the leaders of the grove. It's a shock to him how much everyone seems to care for each other. Where he comes from you do what you must to survive.
