Mike's heart hammered at the implication of his words, waiting for Will to notice, to comment on it so Mike wouldn’t have to say it outright, only for the realization not to come.
“Because it was from El?” Will asked, his voice strained with false bravado. “You can tell me if you still like her, you don’t have to put up a—“
“—Because it was from you.” Mike blurted, cutting Will off and derailing that train of thought.
That late hour madness was loosening his lips once again. They were so close to the end of their world as they knew it, it was verging on the last time he ever could. Could Mike die proudly without ever letting the words fall from his lips? They’d been waiting on the edge for ages now, watching every moment that went by without drop. This is what finally caught Lucas’s attention, enough to fully draw him back to the present. El had never asked for his help before; he’d never imagined that she would ever need it. She quite literally had telekinetic superpowers, not to mention Mike’s unwavering support even after their breakup and Will’s steadfast presence as her adopted brother. What could Lucas possibly do?
