There are two ways to save those affected by the Egg; tearing out the concentrated area of vines from the patient, or killing them. The former option is much more tedious and has little to no chance of not leaving permanent damage to the person. It's also much more time-consuming. Unfortunately, Wilbur doesn't have the motivation or patience to do that. He may not have many weapons, but he has a meat tenderizer and it's doing quite well.
