Summary
Horatio’s story, from before the beginning until the very end.
A medium-velocity-burn journey through the fluff-to-angst pipeline with a loyal, nerdy, prickly, laconic, and gentle person as a guide.
Expect complex backstories, wild canon divergences, sexually charged character development, and classics as a coping mechanism.
I always wondered how exactly someone seemingly so well-adjusted and self-sufficient as Horatio becomes so blindly devoted to someone like Hamlet?

Summary
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Renaissance gentlemen, from their young days brought up together at the Danish royal court with the crown prince of Denmark. Now students, they’re enjoying themselves immensely at Wittenberg University – perhaps a little too much, their contemporaries might argue. Carefree bordering on careless. Indulging in food, drink, and – behind closed doors – each other.
Unfortunately, they will be summoned back to Elsinore, where the walls have ears and secrets can be fatal. This fic is about the characters in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, but I’m also drawing from their extended characterization and dynamic in Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. So these are the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern who have to navigate court intrigue, not timeloop amnesia, but they still play questions.
Fair warning that these characters remain in their historic setting and will not have the vocabulary we have today to describe their actions and feelings.

"That place ain’t for amateurs,” he warned. It should have been sealed off years ago, if you asked him. “It’s an unforgiving, muddy pit. It’ll swallow ya whole if ya underestimate it.”
“Speak for yourself, old man,” her boyfriend said around a belch, slamming his half-empty bottle onto the counter.
“Hamlet!”
“Oh, calm down, Ophelia. Don’t let some superstitious redneck scare you, I have everything under control.”

Summary
He didn’t let go of Guildenstern’s hand though.
It was like when they were kids again...before they were friends with the Crown Prince of Denmark, and therefore easy targets for those who liked to throw their status and power around.
Rosencrantz was an especially easy target.

Summary
“I’ve always wanted to do that.” Rosencrantz was looking a little red in the face, a shy smile which turned to confusion and then sheer horror when Guildenstern gestured at the keys on the table.
“You...were about to forget your keys.” It was taking a while for his brain to kick back in.
Rosencrantz glanced between the keys and Guildenstern’s face for a moment, before grabbing the keys and booking it for the door, the loud BANG of it slamming, echoing around the apartment.

Summary
"I reached for instinct, certain that it would be there, and it wasn't. Do you understand?"
It starts like this:
A sudden burst of pent up frustration, false confidence, and sheer desperation—a bold attempt to be bold and attempt—and a violent course correction, involving a startled horse.
It continues like this:
Two Elizabethans, scuffed and muddied, trudging across a courtyard at Elsinore. One of them is limping.

Summary
Hamlet’s calm voice finally made him stop. He looked at him attentively, his arms outstretched in a placating attitude. Horatio took a deep breath, and at last managed to focus all of his attention on the prince.
He is exactly the way I remember him, he thought, almost miserably. The perfectly smooth and clean vests, the thin gold crown resting precariously on his disheveled hair, the facial features so striking and unmistakable.
And yet, as Horatio studied the figure in front of him, more evident the enormous differences became: the skin even paler than normal, the expression slightly altered, the eyes way too dark to belong to the prince.
That was a lie.
Or, what happens to Horatio after the royal massacre, having been left trapped in the story with only ghosts as company.
