Summary
Essek Thelyss comes to Soltryce to deliver guest lectures and, on the side, cultivate the brand new Archmage of Domestic Protections. Essek is prepared for espionage. He is not prepared to find a love that will change the course of his life.

Summary
Settling Essek’s arm back into place, Caleb looks up to capture and his gaze again. “Tell me what you want,” Caleb commands, voice low and silky smooth.
“T-Touch it,” he manages eventually, something like relief washing over him as soon as the sound hits the air and somehow it makes more words pour unbidden out of him. “Hurt me, please.”

Summary
Essek swallows hard, struggling against the conflicting signals that his mind and body are giving him. “And you would have me kneel and grovel at the feet of your king instead,” he says, managing to keep his voice level and tone acidic through sheer force of will.
Caleb smiles, a flash of sharp white teeth, and a low, warm chuckle leaves his throat. “King Dwendel has enough sycophants,” he dismisses easily. “But, if you ask very nicely, perhaps you can kneel at my feet instead.”

Summary
“Finally,” a woman grumbles.
Fjord pauses in his tracks. He forces his eyes open.
Sitting at the chipped and stained table in his kitchen— and it takes him a second to remember their names— are Astrid and Eadwulf.
They’re dressed in dark leathers, dotted with pockets and wearing utility belts filled with spell components. Eadwulf’s sword hangs in its scabbard, slung across the back of the chair. They’re drinking his tea.
“Given that you’re a sailor, I expected you to be awake earlier,” Astrid says, making direct eye contact. There’s an undercurrent of disappointment to her tone, like she’s rolling her eyes.
“And I thought you shaved everywhere,” Eadwulf adds. His eyes are not on Fjord’s face.
Fjord pulls Jester's tiny pink housecoat closed over his hips.
“Get dressed, we’re behind schedule already,” Astrid orders.or
Fjord is recruited for a mission. Strange times make for strange bedfellows.

Summary
She plays the grieving comrade well. He can play the unrepentant executioner better.
Bren schools his expression into something cold and resolute. He forces his breath even, his muscles loose.
He gives her nothing. Nothing but a condescending sort of pity, built from rot and rancor, as he meets her eye.
“Don’t be naïve, Astrid."
Written for two of whumpster-dumpster's prompts for Whumpril 2025.

Summary
The Empire is winning the war. In the wake of his master's death, Volstrucker Bren ascended to Archmage of Civil Influence, but he's been secretly undermining the Empire by feeding intelligence to the Mighty Nein, a group of adventurers fighting for peace. When his rival and friend the Shadowhand is captured, Bren acts on the only idea that will spare a Kryn politician from execution: claiming him as a war prize.
Bren and Essek are forced to perform a fake politican/concubine relationship, including all the tension and jingoism it entails, while taking advantage of their circumstances to spy on and steal from the court around them. Bren may wield the leash, but Essek has cards up his sleeve, and even so, Bren fears hurting Essek almost as much as Essek fears losing Bren. Their mutual trepidation must graduate to mutual trust — maybe even love — if they have any hope of surviving the lie they started.

Summary
The peace their countries have reached is tenuous and fragile, and rests on the continued cooperation of two people who have barely met, and who definitely don't, and probably never will love each other. At least everyone is on the same page and wants the peace treaty to last,
right?

Summary
“You have been summoned to the Soltryce Academy, to study under the guidance of Archmage Zevran Margolis.” recited the mage, her face sour with distaste. “It is the duty of all with arcane abilities to use them to serve the glory of the Empire. You are to come with us. To Rexxentrum.”
More than eight hundred miles from Port Damali, almost a month’s travel. An entirely different universe. Any protests had been quickly stifled, tears ignored; the mage hadn’t allowed them even a minute to run upstairs and gather their things - the Empire will provide for you, they had been told. By then, the soldiers had been well-practised at extracting magically-talented children from their homes in the cleanest possible fashion, and they were swift and merciless.
And that had been it.*
In the early 800s, the Empire conquered and annexed the Menagerie Coast. Now, as the Dwendalian military machine continues to demand fresh recruits for their war in the northern wildlands, a group of young conscripts in Rexxentrum find their destinies drawn close together.

Summary
“This game we are playing, is it for information?” Caleb asked once, early in the morning, the darkness never quite leaving the cell room he was kept in.
“Not for them,” the Chiss answered slowly, like an admission. “My… interactions with you are not monitored nor ordered by my officials.”
“So why?”
“You are…. interesting. Different.” A pause. When he spoke again, his tone was quieter. “And perhaps, right to distrust Trent.”

Summary
He had left Bren safe and screaming with Astrid and Wulf so many years ago, but all of them are weapons and none of them are safe, and they pry him out of Caleb Widogast’s half-healed bones anyway.
“It’s good to see you,” Eadwulf says, and the pain is cutting, knife-silver sharp.
(Caleb Widogast stumbles his way into a family. Bren haunts the narrative. They both have secrets).

Summary
Each time Essek returns to his towers, he searches them for new evidence of Dwendalian trespassing. He catalogues every rumpled cushion cover, every ink spot, every dunamantic text left slightly out of place.
It is, he imagines, not unlike coming home to another person.
