“What ye reading?” the lad asked, leaning against his forearms on the table, leaning closer to Simon. He could smell the obnoxious sent of Lynx, not that it was hard, when the apocalypse came, that smell would still linger in every secondary school changing room and teen lads’ bedrooms.

It’s a quiet evening and he’s upstairs, staring at a box that had been left on one of the dressers sometime after he’d woken up and followed the scent of breakfast. He’d spotted it around noon, after he’d come up from the garden to have a quick shower and change, and had felt a little confused, and then a little surprised. There hadn’t been any paranoia, any instinctive panic about a mysterious package he hadn’t put in his own space. It was startling in its own way, to realize just how secure he felt here, how safe.
Then he’d stepped to look properly, and felt a whole different kind of way. The note stuck to it had been in a familiar handwriting, signed with a heart and addressed to him, messy and nigh-incomprehensible if you hadn’t had years of prior experience. It was so simple, just a request, but the context of it had made him fluster, made him flee the room until now with the sun tracking down over the horizon.

Simon chuckled, swinging his legs over the edge of his bed, rubbing his face with his free hand, “And you called me why?” Simon grumbled, pulling himself to his feet, he was half expecting John to ask help to bury bodies and clean up blood, “Want me to go onto the news and say that it was ‘totally unexpected’,”
“Aye,” John answered without hesitation, nodded his head frantically, “Mind being my character witness in court as well?” he pleaded.

Simon nearly flinched when he felt Johnny's hand squeeze his knee under the table, not expecting the touch, but leaning into it once it was there. Their shoulders nearly touched as they sat, refusing to be more than a few inches apart even in a safe place, conditioned by what has now been years of staying close by incase danger unexpectedly strikes. The heat radiating from Johnny was soothing, as was the soft scent of his cologne which Simon caught a whiff of every time he took a deep breath to steady himself.
It was pathetic, really, than a man who has charged headfirst into gunfights without so much as blinking found himself so anxious over a dinner with his boyfriend's family.

The buzzing on a phone broke through Simon’s sleep, an ache was felt through his body, one that he welcomed happily along with the memories of what had happened only a few hours prior. Instead of being able to continue on last nights events, Simon turned around to find John’s side of the bed empty and the sound of the shower echoing through the room. Simon shifted over the John’s side of the bed, looking to turn off the alarm. However, John’s phone was nowhere to be found, the sound of the running water was accompanied by John’s music.
“Shit,” Simon hissed, clambering back to his side of the bed, picking up his buzzing phone. It was nearly nine o’clock, and this was not the first phone call that had come through; he was meant to be on his way to Manchester by now.
