Summary
Mythical creatures were heavily favored everywhere in the world. It was near impossible for humans to work anywhere that didn’t only pay minimum wage and wasn’t a dead-end job.
Some humans, those who couldn’t get jobs at all, had the option to sell themselves into a multitude of cruel and heavily illegal markets. Businesses that would drain a human of most of their blood in order to feed vampires, let demons experiment with their magic on them, have shapeshifters practice shifting by taking their form, or would have werewolves hunt them down for sport.
Even if all of those horrible practices and businesses were outlawed, it didn’t stop them from existing.
Basically, it was hard for humans to survive anymore.
Tommy was human, but nobody knew. Not a single soul knew that he was human and it was a secret that Tommy was sure he’d attempt to take to his grave.

Or, Tommy is a human living in a world where only mythical creatures can succeed. He has hidden his humanity for his entire life.
When Tommy is fostered by a new family, one mistake leads to his biggest secret being revealed and his humanity accidentally taken from him. Found family and healing quickly begin in the aftermath.Series

Only members of the royal family had wings.
But somehow, Tommy has wings and he definitely isn’t in the royal family.
He doesn’t live in a castle, he lives in a cardboard box in an alley. He doesn’t have a crown or any fancy golden jewelry, he only owns one rusted silver ring that he found on the side of the road.
Tommy doesn’t have any money to his name, any clothes other than what he already wears, or anything of any real value.
Yet he still has wings, bright gold and shiny and firmly attached to his back, like they’re meant to be there, like they aren’t a contradiction to everything everyone knows about avians and about the royal family.

Or, Tommy lives in a kingdom where the only avians are the royal family. This wouldn’t be an issue if Tommy didn’t also and have wings, and also wasn’t in the royal family.
After trying to hide his wings for years, the royal family finally finds out and tries to give Tommy the home he never had, even if he originally thought they wanted to execute him.Series

“Since when did you care about impossible odds?” Uni replied, her upset eyes meeting Flicker’s. “We never gave up back home. We don’t need to give up now.”
Flicker glanced away. “Even—even outside the arena, beating the odds didn’t mean everyone lived. Remember what Art said about the Games? Remember Oli?”
“I remember. But I also remember how you said his death wouldn’t be in vain, that we wouldn’t use that kind of a loss against each other!” Uni responded, borderline shouting now.
“I’m not trying to use that against you. I’m saying that sometimes in the process of surviving, some people have to die.” Its voice rose to match Uni’s tone.
“That’s why you have to survive, not me. You’re a better leader, the Rabbits need you. They don’t need me.” Uni dropped her gaze, taking a deep breath.

“Uni Krinstall, hm?” The announcer hummed. “What a strange last name. I’ll bet most capitol citizens don’t even know what a krinstall is. Would you mind telling them?” He held the microphone in front of her face.
Uni narrowed her eyes but forced herself to school her expression into something more calm, more blasé. “Sure. A Krinstall is what I’ll be when I burn all you capitol assholes at the fucking stake.” She spat, having no remorse for the gun she heard being loaded only a few feet away.
“You’re really so full of fire for someone who’s appearance is more akin to that of a wilting flower.” The announcer stated, eyes glimmering. “A wilted, burning flower, perhaps.”
Uni gritted her teeth but said nothing, ever-aware of the gun she knew was aimed at the back of her head. She knew she had it in her to say more, but she told herself that now wasn’t the time.

Maybe they could start getting along?
And it was not like the time manipulating powers he possessed were not just another ace up his sleeve to ensure his definite survival.

Tommy had always hated hybrids.
Not for no reason of course. He wasn’t that much of a jerk.
It was just that he had never met one that wasn’t rude to him in one way or another. He hadn’t met one who wasn’t quick to hate him, disregard him, or just generally make him feel like crap.
They also seemed to be at the root of many of his traumatic experiences.
That was why Tommy wasn’t very pleased to be in this car right now. He wasn’t exactly thrilled to be headed to house number 14, one that Sam had told him was a family of hybrids.

Belatedly, Tommy wondered if the reason nobody left the village was because of creatures like the one in front of him.
“I’m not going to hurt you.” The creature said, his mystical voice drawing Tommy out of his thoughts. “I only want to help.”
Tommy didn’t believe the creature’s words for a moment. He quietly shook his head, beginning to lift himself to his feet. His hands shook and his legs trembled, making him almost worry that he would fall.
The creature tilted his head, eyes glowing brighter for a moment before returning to their original light level. “You aren’t human… are you? The forest would’ve killed you long ago if you were.”
Tommy took a careful step backwards. Tommy knew that he was different, but he couldn’t be anything other than just an odd human. Not being human seemed like such a foreign and terrifying concept.

Today, he didn’t win despite it being a melee and he knew why.
His eyes had actually looked at someone in the audience for once. A mistake he’d only make this once. A cloaked figure that had brown eyes and a familiar face, although it looked much more tired and less like the hallucinations he sometimes saw. The cloak was for the wings on the guys back, because he knew this person. They’d been close before he got put in here, for no particular reason. It had been Wilbur, he was absolutely sure of it. Somehow, his friend had found him and that brief hesitation was his doom. It had gotten him an uppercut to the jaw and a quick knock out.
