This is the Barbaric Archipelago… but it’s not what it used to be. Twenty years ago, the Archipelago was ravaged by the “Great Quake”, an event that turned it into a maze of sea canyons. and nothing’s been the same since. The night seems a little darker, the distance between villages a little farther, and more than just dragons menace us now. Creatures born of our darkest fears stalk the altered landscape, given life by some insidious and overwhelming evil. And the dead walk among us.
Astrid and Hiccup's "romantic flight" ends abruptly when Toothless enters the Nest, and the Queen forces him to rat out Hiccup and Astrid. In the aftermath, Hiccup wakes up to find Astrid missing, Toothless back under the Queen's control, and himself a one-legged Draugr sharing his not-quite-dead body with an evil spirit from the depths of literal Hel. And then the Queen press-gangs him into helping Toothless participate in dragon raids on pain of the destruction of Berk.
It's hardly an ideal set of circumstances, and things somehow manage to keep going downhill from there. But Hiccup swears that he'll find a way to get rid of the Queen and get the three of them all back to Berk safely, whatever it takes.

He waited, breathless, for his son to suddenly wake up. Suddenly gasp into life and laugh. He would smile and stutter through some sarcastic joke and Stoick would -
But it didn’t matter now, what Stoick would do. All that mattered was what he had done, what he had said, all the things he couldn’t take back.
Or, Hiccup doesn't make it out alive from his battle with the Red Death, and Stoick mourns his son, Astrid mourns a person she never got to know, and Toothless mourns his other half.
