Thomas had felt his heart skip a beat when those kind yet strong, unyielding eyes had settled into his own, Vincent’s lips quirking upwards just so.
At the end of the Conclave, Thomas Lawrence had thought the worst to be behind him. But, apparently, God wasn't entirely done with him yet. First, he'd had to deal with the late Pope denying his resignation. Then with Adeyemi and Tremblay nearly toppling the Church over. And now...now Thomas had fallen in love with the Pope.

“Thomas?” Ray’s voice—warm, startled, worried—calls through the room. He hesitates on the threshold for barely a breath before crossing the room.
Thomas shakes his head. “Go away.”
But his voice is ruined—thin, unconvincing, more plea than command.
Ray crouches beside the desk, eyes searching his face. “What happened?”
Wordless, Thomas gestures to the syringe. His hand betrays him again, trembling as he tries to lift it, as though the evidence of his failure must be shown. He drops it almost immediately, ashamed.

Aldo smiles at him again. “I’m sure you are, Thomas. Think nothing of it.” He withdraws his hand, patting Thomas’s twice as he does so. He turns a little in his seat, shifting to Guilio, who has thus far been engaged in a book. “Guilio – I meant to talk to you about the upcoming trip to Madrid–”
Thomas watches, with some lagging confusion, as Guilio shuts his book and the two switch to logistics, Thomas having been neatly carved out of the conversation.
Or, Thomas has agreed not to resign. The reactions he gets are not what he expected.

“Probably on the technical team again. You?” Ray tosses the question back before putting his phone down and waiting for Giulio’s answer.
“Whatever they’ll give me”
“Yes but if you were to choose…”
“Jason Dean.”
Ray’s eyes widened a bit from his answer, obviously surprised considering he rarely wants to be a main lead. Giulio prefers stage directing according to the roles he had for most of their productions. He was only an actor once or twice during their “Falsetto” run. Well, it was for emergency purposes but the point still stands. So it was a bit…out of character for him. But maybe he wants to try something new this time. Nonetheless, he was fully supportive of his bestfriend’s decision.
“And your preferred Veronica?”
“Whoever they pick.”
“Again, not an actual answer.”
“Do you want to hear a name?” Sabbadin smirks a bit teasingly, glancing at his roommate. Ray did want to hear a name but not because of whatever reason Giulio’s thinking right now. He was curious about his ideal qualifications with his potential Veronica.

“Dally any longer, and I fear that neither of us will be in anyone’s good graces,” Thomas replies as Ray sweeps past them. “But I would’ve…” He glances furtively at Benítez; for an instant, it’s the thrill of misbehaving at seminary again. “I would’ve liked that.”
“There’s a computer in the office.”
“We’d have to cross Sister Agnes.”
“Ah. Never mind that idea, then.”
Oh, the things I would’ve liked had we been young men together, Thomas thinks wistfully as they approach the dining room. I would’ve liked you.

Not only unappealing. Offensive.

This is God’s punishment for sinners of the highest degree: never-ending, soul-destroying hunger that tips just barely into numbness.

“Read it,” Ray urged. “It was addressed to you.”
“Later,” Thomas said, but Ray shook his head.
“Look at the date.”
Thomas took Ray’s proffered reading glasses and scanned the sheet of paper, which appeared to be a drafted memo. His eyes widened at the date at the top of the sheet: 20th October, 2021. That was the day after the Holy Father’s death. He then read the actual content of the memo, and he regretted it deeply because by the time he finished, he felt dizzy.
He wanted to throw up.
Thomas Lawrence has the burdensome duty of organizing a conclave to elect the new pope. When he receives a message claiming that the Holy Father might have been killed, the burden becomes a race against time as he works to prove the claim before the Church can crown a murderer.
