War wasn’t all bad. In between the smell of death and blood, there was still two soldiers, shining in the company of each other.

I don’t even know why I’m writing this. I’m not a poet. I’m not Tim with the emotional shit. Maybe I thought that getting it down on paper would make the voices go quiet. Maybe it won’t, but the nagging in the back of my head tells me that if scared little Timmy got better, that I could too.

    Summary

When boxes from the Spiral killer start showing up again, Zeke and O'Brien expect the games to be starting again. They hadn't been prepared for the Valentine's game that unfolded instead.

    -

“That’s a bigger box.” O’Brien comments, staring at the box nervously. Zeke doesn’t respond, he grabs a glove from his desk and opens the box carefully, trying to hold in a gag when he sees the contents, “is that a fucking heart?” O’Brien asks incredulous, failing to hold in the gag. Sat nestled amongst white tissues inside the box is a heart, the stench of iron clear in the air and based on the size Zeke assumes it’s probably human.

“So let me get this straight. Your father was forced to point a gun at the SWAT team by...”
Zeke rubbed his eyes, suppressing the need to groan in frustration. “By William Schenk.”
He'd been in this fucking interrogation room for the past six hours and they still weren't done asking questions he'd already answered a million times before.

    -

After William escapes, Zeke is interrogated about what happened when suddenly a new Spiral murder is reported.

    Summary

Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried is a strange sort of book, at once a novel and a collection of stories, autofiction and complete make-believe, fiction and fact. It contains just barely too much fact to pass as pure storytelling, just barely too much fiction to qualify as memoir that plays a little fast and loose with the details. The book does not quite fit the standard image of metafiction, if such a thing exists, with its inherent experimental nature and oddities that insist the reader take it at something more or less than face value. At the same time, it includes enough of those elements—the recursive sense of writing about writing—to reward a study of what makes its stories something very like metafiction.
