His code was splintering from the inside out.
Binary snapped and bit at him like broken electrical wires, snaking underneath his carefully curated mask. His performance was convincing, of course—he was a ringmaster, after all. No one suspected the AI of fissuring at the seams of what held him together, mimed and mimicked enthusiasm a brilliant cover for what truly calculated inside of him.
Only when out of sight from the digital performers did he crumble…only then did he glitch into a garbled mess of overheating circuits and faltering processors.

She takes a step forward, lashes fluttering shut against the weight of this paradise. To her hazy recollection, she hasn’t felt so at peace in a long time…though, at the moment, she cannot remember why. After all, this seems to be heaven; why would she feel any sort of displeasure here?
As her eyelids lift to reveal pinwheel irises, she remembers.
Her room is dark and shadowy, shades of vibrant blue and red muffled in the dimness of circus night. She is on her back and staring at the drooping canopy of silk above her stiff mattress. The muted circus ambience trickles through the bottom of her door, as do her fellow castmates that chatter in the halls beyond this somewhat safe space.
Pomni groans and plants her face into her hands.
