Well, it was more that he did not care, to be honest. Loki is a scientist at heart, he likes to test things, so what could be better for a magical being like him than to have the Tesseract? Of course, he was going to experiment with it, what was Thor thinking?
Oh, yes... Thor did not know. It did not matter though. It was a detail.
