Ed has a strict “no kids” rule and he will not break it for anyone, as brave or passionate as they might be.
“Izzy!” He says. The man straightens up and so does the kid. “Put her on a boat with water for a few days. That should be enough to get her to some port.”
He expects anger or pleading from the kid, but instead she looks… hurt, almost. Maybe disappointed. The men start pulling the ropes that bind her to move her along, and she stands her ground surprisingly well for someone so light Ed could probably lift her with one hand. Her eyes feel like they’re boring holes in his skull and so he decides to turn away and head back to his quarters.
Maybe, if he was younger, or if he’d slept more, or if he had gotten to put that oil on his knee, he would have walked faster and wouldn’t have heard the girl’s next words. However, as it is, he doesn’t and therefore he does hear them. And when he does he stops dead in his tracks.

This wasn’t about ability. It was about humiliation. A grenade tossed into the space between them, designed to detonate Sharp’s pride and send him limping away, wounded. This was Dylan’s weapon of choice when cornered, when kindness felt like an assault: verbal cruelties, expertly aimed at the softest spots. Push them away. Make them leave. Build the walls higher.
The insult stung. A younger Sharp might have snarled, might have let the pain and the pride dictate his retreat.
