Summary
"My name is Castiel, Angel of the Lord, Junior Member of the Garrison Forces, and Soldier of Heaven! I do not know why you keep calling me ‘Cas,’ but stop it at once.”
“Alright, Castiel, Angel of the Lord, junior—” Cas pressed the blade into his throat, hard enough to put pressure on his Adam's apple but not enough to draw blood, “ah! Alright. Fine.”
“Why are you here?”
“I made a mistake,” Jack called out before she could cut. She turned her head to face him, yet refused to take the blade off Dean. “I was trying out my powers and I wanted to try time travel, but I lost control and went too far back. I don’t have the strength to make the full jump forward, so we’ve been inching our way back to 2017.”

Summary
Cas is dead and Dean has to find a way to live without him. He does a pretty shit job -- everyone else thinks he's doing just fine.
"He finds himself kneeling next to Cas' body again. He's not sure why but he reaches out and grabs Cas' hand and holds Jack's head and he feels like tearing his own skin off and he feels like this is the only time he's ever truly been able to breathe and he feels like he doesn't even have lungs. He looks at Jack then, right in his eyes, and he says, "this is your Dad," in his unused, raspy voice and Jack just sniffles a little and snuggles closer to Dean's chest and Dean feels like everything and nothing at the same time. He wants to live in this moment; he thinks he'd be better off dead."

Summary
Somewhere along the margins they mention imprinting. It's not that prevalent in human beings, turns out. The book mentions ducks and tiny ducklings that open their eyes to a whole new word and find the first thing they see the freudean ideal of a perfect mother, even if it is, in fact, a giant bitch of a snake about to eat them.
Dean shot him. Does that make him Jack's ideal of a perfect parent, despite being a giant bitch of a hunter about to kill him?

Summary
And then his hand slides down, fingers skimming over Dean’s stomach, and Dean sucks in a breath when he feels the smallest brush of grace. It’s warm, like standing under the sun during spring, and it’s reaching for something, but Dean doesn’t know what. He looks up when he hears Jack’s soft gasp, and he’s surprised to see an expression of awe on his face.
“There,” he breathes. “I feel her.”

“Hello?” she called while resting her hand at the gun at her waist “Is that you Jack?”
A groan came from behind the counter, it was a voice too deep to be the newborn half angel, there was only two people left it was either Sam or Dean, still with her hand on the gun Mary walked very carefully to see who was the culprit for the noise, her steps so light you would think she was trying to mot startle an wild animal.
“Dean?” she called, a suspicion that it was her eldest in there.Or

Summary
Then it’s just him and Jack. Him and the kid.
And the entire near future branches out before him, a sad unflattering replica of Sylvia Plath’s fig tree. Where the possible futures don’t stretch into years and lifetimes, but grow into short stalks of accidental maiming. Where the kid gets sick because Dean doesn’t know how to feed him, gets bruised because Dean doesn't know how to hold him, cries because Dean isn’t his mother or his father or a sub-family he can count on.

Or: Cas dies, Jack is a newborn baby, Sam is going through something, and Dean doesn’t know what to do. Until he does.

Summary
Cas looks up at him with wide, watery eyes and a scowl that makes Dean want to crush him to his chest until they both suffocate. Instead, he crouches down in front of Cas and looks him square in the eye. The stubborn bastard looks right back. After years of the same goddamn staring contest, it isn’t hard to figure out that Dean is always going to be the first one to break.
“I could hitchhike to Cozad,” he suggests. “Bring you back an ambulance.”
But Cas only shakes his head and grips the sleeve of Dean’s shirt like he’s trying to keep him in place. “House,” he insists. His breath seems to be slowly dissipating until there’s only enough left for one word at a time. “Faster."
Another moment passes as Dean looks over his shoulder down the long stretch of road as if just staring into the middle distance will make something happen. A car will appear or something. Some kind of quick fix that wouldn’t mean a roll of the dice with Cas’s life.
No such luck. Maybe Cas is right. Maybe time and rest are all they need.
***
Or Dean recalls the time that he and Cas found themselves stranded in a house with a shadowed past.
