“Love doesn’t matter, Travis,” Jackie says. “Don’t you remember?”
Travis shakes his head, and when he does her face goes blurry, like an old photograph worn by years. He squints, blinking, trying to focus, trying to make Jackie look like herself again, but it’s no use — she’s not Jackie anymore. Travis doesn’t really know who she is. The necklace is still there, and her eyes are big, but they’re not the right color, somewhere between dark chocolate and brilliant green. Her hair’s fuzzy, some shade of brown or blonde that Travis can’t place, and he’s blinking and trying to make it make sense, but the more he blinks the less like Jackie or Nat or Lottie she looks, the less like a girl she looks at all. Antlers are coming from either side of her head, her face concealed by pale shiny netting. He squints, trying to look through the mesh to see her eyes, but all he sees is dark, dark, dark.
“Come on, Travis,” she says, and she almost sounds like Nat but she doesn’t, voice too low and grainy and inhuman. “Does a hunt that has no violence feed anyone?”
