Work Text:

He’s fine.

He’s all banged up and on bedrest for the next month.

But he’s fine.

Deku is alive.

He’s in bed and he’s eating the miso soup that Katsuki had tried to feed him but Deku insisted that he was an adult and he could do it himself. Katsuki gave up on his endeavor to spoonfeed his boyfriend at any given chance. He’d let Deku have this one. One of his arms was still recovering and he had a mild concussion, but other than that he was doing well. He looked exhausted. The fight had been nasty and it had taken Deku two days to wake up.

Katsuki watched him fight for his life.

He hadn’t known if he’d ever hear Deku’s voice ever again. See his eyes. His smile.

No.

Deku is alive and he’s fine.

Deku set his spoon in his bowl and frustratingly tried to push his hair away from his face again. His hair was getting long and he wouldn’t be able to go get it cut for a while. Maybe if he was up and moving around in the next week, Katsuki would take him just to get out of the house. He’d start to go crazy if he was trapped in their apartmentment for a month. It had been a week and he was doing okay so far. For now though, Katsuki fished an elastic headband out of their bedside drawer, gently pulled it over Deku’s head, then slid it up over his hair to push his bangs away from his forehead.

Deku smiled dopily up at him. “Thank you, Kacchan,” he softly as he began to eat again. Katsuki climbed into bed with him and slid an arm over Deku’s lap. Deku took a few more bites then set the bowl on the table. He slid down into bed and rolled onto his side to face Katsuki with a smile. His stupid smile.

“You’re quiet today, Kacchan,” he said, brushing Katsuki’s hair away from his forehead.

“You have a concussion, dumbass. Of course, I’m being quiet,” he grumbled as Deku’s hand came to rest on his cheek.

“You know what I mean,” he laughed softly. His stupid, sweet laugh.

Deku was right. He’d been pretty quiet today. He mostly moved around their place and took care of Deku. He’d been doing that for the past week but now that things had slowed down and he wasn’t completely fussing over Deku, he’d had more time to process what had happened.

Deku almost died.

It wasn’t the first time Deku had flirted with death, but it was the first time he’d been knocked out for that long. Katsuki really thought there was a massive chance he’d never see Deku again.

“I thought I was gonna lose you,” he said finally. Deku’s smile fell and he immediately moved to rest their foreheads together. Even when he was recovering from a near death experience, Deku wanted to care for others. That was so like him. He had to be emotionally exhausted but here he was, comforting Katsuki. Katsuki both loved and hated this about him.

“I’ve never known life without you, Deku,” he said, his voice breaking, tears forming in his eyes, “and I really don’t wanna know what that’s like.”

Deku started to cry too, because of course he did, “Kacchan, I-”

“No, Deku, you almost died,” he said, his voice thick with emotion but still soft, minding Deku’s concussion, “I had to watch you in that hospital bed, plugged up to all those machines. You looked dead and I wasn’t sure if you were ever gonna wake up. It was fucking scary. And I… I can’t even yell at you about it because your fucking brain is broken.”

He reached up and rubbed some of his tears away with the heels of his hands, then chanced a look at his boyfriend. Deku stared back at him with his lips parted and tears streaming down his face. He slid his arms around Katsuki’s shoulders and pulled him into his chest.

There he goes again. Ever selfless Deku.

Katsuki wept into his chest and allowed himself to be held by Deku. His stupidly sweet boyfriend carded his hand through Katsuki’s hair and whispered apologies, love confessions, and promised to be more careful. He knew there was only so much Deku could promise. Near death experiences were an occupational hazard of being a hero, but Katsuki was selfish when it came to Deku. He wished Deku would be a little selfish sometimes. Just a little.

Bakugou Katsuki had never loved anyone or anything as fiercely as he loved Midoriya Izuku. Through it all, the good, the bad, and the ugly, Deku had never abandoned him. He was more than Katsuki deserved, but Deku chose him over and over again. Proudly. For the whole world to see.

“You fucking better,” he said in response to Deku’s promises, “cause you’re fucking it for me, Deku. I don’t… I don’t know what I’d fucking do. If anything ever happened to me you’d have options. I’ll never love anything like I love you, Deku.”

Deku is quiet after that. It was almost like time had stopped. He wasn’t even sniffling anymore.

“What are you fucking talking about?” he said, finally, pulling away so he could look into Katsuki’s eyes.

“Deku, you know you’re the only on-”

“No, not that. Options?”

Katsuki hadn’t meant to let that slip but it was something that was always in the back of his mind. Deku could have anyone he wanted. Katsuki wasn’t blind to the fact that more than half the class, himself included, was in love with Deku. For all his boasting about his own greatness, Katsuki knew Deku could do better than him. He could have been with anyone but Deku chose him. He could have had a nice life with Uraraka. Todoroki had it so bad for Deku, he probably would have dumped anyone on the spot if Deku even so much as looked his way. And there were so many others who were probably just waiting for Katsuki to fuck up so they could sneak in and take Deku for themselves.

Deku had his pick of basically the entire class and for some godforsaken reason, he was charmed by Katsuki. Deku had to be the only person on earth who found him charming.

Katsuki felt bad for saying what he said. Deku sounded genuinely hurt, but it was out there now.

“You could have anyone, Deku,” he said, looking away from Deku and squeezing his eyes shut.

“But I have the person I want, Kacchan. I have you,” he said fiercely. “I don’t want anyone else. I never have. Not ever. Are you fucking stupid? Kacchan, please look at me.”

After a beat, Katsuki opened his eyes and looked up at Deku. He expected Deku to be furious and see hot, angry tears pouring down his face. There was nothing but utter adoration and worry in his bright green eyes. He shed a few tears and took Katsuki’s face into his hands.

“You’re the love of my life, Kacchan.”

Katsuki sucked in a breath. It was no secret that Deku loved him. Everyone knew. Deku let him know in so many ways all the time. Lingering touches. Stolen kisses. Removing his reading glasses when he’d fallen asleep wearing them. Bringing him lunch to his agency when he’d forgotten his at home. A hand reached out to pick him up when he fell. Deku had put his life on the line for Katsuki more times than he could count. Deku loved him as he was and never once asked him to change. Others tolerated Katsuki, but Deku loved him and he told him every day but, he’d never said it in such a way. Katsuki felt stupid for not knowing it in his own heart. He should have known Deku better than that. He remembered their second fight at U.A., late at night when all their classmates were asleep. Deku was so hurt when Katsuki told him that he thought Deku looked down on him. He’d been being stupid then, too. Deku had been chasing him for years and he was so blinded by his own inferiority complex to recognize Deku’s admiration and kindness.

Deku never did anything halfway and that included the way he loved. Deku loved with his full heart without hesitation.

Deku’s here.

He’s fine.

Deku loves him.

Tears spilled down Katsuki’s face as he rushed forward to kiss Deku. Deku held him close but gently as he slipped his fingers through Katsuki’s hair. Katsuki gripped the back of Deku’s shirt tight, like he’d be gone if he let go. Deku whispered confessions of love between their kisses and Katsuki responded by kissing him again.

Eventually Katsuki pulled away and rested their foreheads together but leaned forward to press a gentle but lingering kiss to Deku’s lips then his cheek. He rested his head in the crook of Deku’s neck and sighed, allowing himself to relax in Deku’s arms.

“I love you,” he whispered.

“I love you so much, Kacchan.”

They rested together quietly for a few minutes while Katsuki rubbed gentle circles into Deku’s back with his thumb.

“Deku?”

“Hm?” Deku kissed his forehead.

“You said fuck.” He pulled back to smirk at his boyfriend. Deku cursed but he wasn’t one for saying fuck a lot. Katsuki was becoming a bad influence on him and he liked it.

“Oh my god, Kacchan,” Deku groaned, once again smiling but with a wince he flopped onto his back. “I’m an adult.”

“Be careful. Your brain’s broken, remember?”

“How can I forget? My head’s killing me and you’re over here trying to break it more.” Deku yawned and threw his arm over his eyes dramatically.

Katsuki laughed and kissed his cheek. “I’m going to get you some water, okay? Try to take a nap. You’re exhausted.”

“Mkay,” Deku said, biting back another yawn as he rolled onto his side and Katsuki climbed out of bed. “Thanks, Kacchan. I love you.”

“Hey, Deku?”

“Yeah?

“You said it twice. It was pretty hot.”

“Oh my god.

He’s fine.
