Telling the Parents

Summary:

Telling your parents you've met someone is hard enough, but what about telling them you've met two someones? Or that one of them is a man? Or maybe the fact that he's the last scion of your family's greatest enemy's?

Or

Adrian comes out to his parents and Trevor and Dracula need to find a way to handle that.

Work Text:

“Mother, father. I have something to tell you.” His mother stops her work looking up with concern and his father straitens slightly, expression tightening into the serious lines he rarely carries around them.

“Adrian? Honey are you ok?”

“I” He takes a deep breath and steals himself. “I met someone, two someone’s.”

“Do they know about each other?” His mother asks seriously.

“Yes.”

“Then that’s wonderful honey.” His mother beams at that pulling him forward into a tight hug. “You’ll have to bring them round for us to meet them.”

“I will but, I have to tell you something about them.” More specifically one of them, the fact that Sypha was a Speaker and a magician would be nothing to his parents but Trevor, “One of them is… is…”

“Male?” His father asks and Adrian stiffens turning startled eyes on his father. “Don’t act so shocked son, we do have eyes.”

“Vlad!” His mother scolds stepping away from him to give his father a glare, “Be polite about it, Adrian was clearly nervous about this.”

“You knew?” He asks voice slightly faint and she gives him a small smile pulling him down into a chair so that she can press a kiss to his forehead.

“We had an idea, but we didn’t want to press things until you were ready to talk about them.”

“You didn’t think we would care about that sort of thing?” Father asks and Adrian quickly shakes his head.

“No. Not really I just, I wasn’t sure how to tell you.” He’s still surprised they figured it already but that makes part of this easier.

“Good, and are they aware what you are?”

He nods “Yes, I’ve told them everything. They are ok with it.”

“That’s wonderful.” His mother says beaming. “You’ll have to tell us all about them. What are they like? What are their names?”

Adrian sucks in a slow breath chancing a look at his father “Sypha Belnades and Trevor. Trevor Belmont.”

“WHAT!”

“This is such a bad idea.” Trevor says looking up at the castle looming over them.

“You’ve said that before Treffy.”

“Then I’ll say it again, this is such a fucking bad idea.” Sypha gives him an unimpressed look which Trevor thinks is unfair; she isn’t the one whose family has spent centuries fighting the vampiric owner of said castle.

“Look Adrian was nervous enough about this. Do you really want to ruin this for him with your moaning.” Ouch low blow. Although Trevor has to admit that she has a point, Adrian might not be able to beat Sypha’s puppy dog eyes, but he can do pitifully miserable very well.

“Fine. I’ll keep my mouth shut and pretend fangs’ dad doesn’t want to eat me ok?”

Sypha sighs in the particular way she does when she thinks they are being stupid, which Trevor also thinks is very unfair. Still she doesn’t try to say anything else and knocks firmly on the massive fuckoff door. There’s a minuet of silence where Trevor can almost hope they got the wrong massive freaky castle before the door creeks open revealing Adrian minus his fancy coat but up one ridiculously frilly shirt that Trevor is absolutely going to mock him for later (even if he does look sinfully good in it).

“Adrian, you look good.” Sypha exclaims pulling the blond into a hug.

“Thank you. You look lovely as well.” Adrian says pulling back with a smile, he turns to Trevor giving him a once over before adding. “I see you managed to make Trevor look half-way decent.”

“Hey!”

“It wasn’t easy, but I did my best.” Sypha laughs.

“Oh fuck of the both of you. Just because I don’t waltz around in a frilly nightgown all the time doesn’t mean I can’t look good.”

“Oh I know, it’s just hard to tell when you’re caked in mud and smelling like a sewer pit.” Adrian replies acting as though he hasn’t ended up covered in monster guts many times in their adventures. Trevor is about to call him on his hypocrisy when a woman’s voice calls out.

“Adrian honey, is that them?” Immediately Adrian turns pulling himself up straighter and giving Trevor a ‘behave’ look.

“Yes mother.”

Trevor wasn’t sure what to expect from a woman who married Dracula, but it wasn’t the small, kind looking woman that steps out onto the castle doorstep. She looks just like her son minus the ethereal edge and with small lines of age beginning to creep in around her eyes and mouth. She’s dressed nicely but not overly fancy, which means that his boyfriend’s sense of style probably comes from his vampire half. All in all she looks like any middle-aged mother he might meet in a quiet town.

“It’s so nice to meet you both.” She says seeming pretty honest about it. “You must be Sypha.”

“That’s right. Thank you for inviting us.” Sypha answers still showing no sign of nerves.

“Well you’re the first people Adrian’s ever told us about. Of course I had to meet you both. And this must be the infamous Trevor Belmont.”

Trevor calls up his best memories of courtly etiquette and bows low, he’ll show Adrian behaving. “I’m not sure what your son’s been telling you but I’m sure it’s all lies.”

She laughs “Oh he’s been saying only good things I promise. It’s my husband who keeps complaining, but I’ve made him promise to behave.”

She made the most powerful vampire in the world promise to behave. Like Dracula was just a normal man who was annoyed by his daughter’s new suitor. Trevor’s not sure what power Mrs Tepes has but he has to admit he’s impressed.

“Now shall we enter? Dinner is nearly ready.”

“Belmont.” A deep voice rumbles the second Trevor steps into the surprisingly homely dining room. He straightens and turns to take in the towering figure of the Belmont family’s greatest foe.

“Dracula.” He says stiffly. Fuck this is it, the Belmont line is going to end because he couldn’t resist his partners begging faces.

Except that Lisa pushes her way into Dracula’s space and jabbing him in the side, the vampire shuts whatever he was about say and looks the very image of a cowed husband even though there’s no way in hell that he felt that.

“Why don’t you three take a seat. Vlad would you help me bring everything over?” She asks in a way that is more of a command. Trevor lets himself be led over to the table and doesn’t miss how Sypha and Adrian sit on either side of him like they do when they think they need to keep him in place. He would object that he can control himself, but he honestly can’t blame them.

There’s already a few bottles of what he hopes is wine on the table and Trevor reaches from one only to get his own jab from each side. Rude, it wasn’t like he was going to down the whole bottle. He has more sense than to get drunk in Dracula’s castle.

Lisa enters the room still happy and smiling holding a large tray of something delicious smelling, Dracula follows her carrying significantly more, Trevor’s half surprised that he stooped to carrying them rather than just making them float along like Adrian does when he’s showing of.

“Please help yourselves.” Lisa says sitting down opposite Trevor leaving her husband to sit facing Sypha. There’s definitely a conspiracy here to keep people between him and the Vampire lord but Trevor decides to be the bigger person and not bring it up, until they’re out of here at least.

Everyone reaches for food and Trevor isn’t stopped this time when he pours himself a generous glass of what is in fact wine. It’s good food and for a little while Trevor can dig in and pretend this is a normal meal with normal company instead of the strangest fucking line up of people in history.

"So how did you three meet? Adrian didn't go into the details." Lisa asks once everyone's stuck in.

"We all happened to be in Gresit when the town was being troubled by monsters." Sypha explains, "Trevor and I help the townsfolk fight it off, but there was an explosion and we ended up in the catacombs and found Adrian. Trevor thought he had something to do with it and of course they had to start fighting instead of talking things out." Shit, of course Sypha couldn't just change the story a little, telling someone you tried to stake their son is not the best way to win them over.

"I guess I shouldn't be surprised that a Belmont would attack first and think later." Dracula draws with a sneering look that makes Trevor want to punch him in his smug face.

"I started it." Adrian says loudly cutting of what was probably a reprimand from his mother and making Trevor blink in surprise. "Sypha had already got caught in one of the traps there and Trevor was right to be suspicious given the timing.

That's definitely not the truth, or rather a creative version of it but Trevor is happy to role with it if it means Dracula is less likely to snap and kill him.

"hmm" Dracula doesn't look impressed "And how did that turn into this," he gestures at the three of them.

"Well, we had to find the cause of the attacks and Adrian thought he knew where they were coming from so we decided to working together." Sypha explains. "And then one of the townsfolk mentioned that there was some trouble at a nearby village that might be related and that turned into us traveling together."

"Well I'm glad you were able to help the people." Lisa says "I've tried to help and spread knowledge but it is a wide world and a large task."

"Especially when you've got corrupt assholes in the Church preaching that everything they don't like is heresy." Trevor snorts, there's an instant pain in his leg as Sypha kicks him but Lisa just looks a little sad and nods.

"There are many who fear what they can't explain or control. I was nearly killed by a Bishop a year ago for the crime of healing people." Her voice turns angry at the end and Trevor can see the same stubborn glare that he's gotten hundreds of times from Adrian.

"We can start a club." He replies and it's a little more bitter than he intended but who's going to fucking blame him.

"Yes, I heard about what happened to your clan." Dracula says and not even the threat of Sypha's pointy shoes or sleeping on the floor can keep him from reacting to that.

"Oh and I bet you and your vampire friends had a proper party at that huh!? Go raid a small down and laugh it up at how the Belmont's got wiped out by the very people they were trying to protect!"

"Don't you dare assume what I do!" Dracula snaps pushing to his feet, the room itself seems to darken slightly but that might just be from the vampires sheer size.

"The Belmont's may have been a thorn in my side but Leon was once a friend and I took no pleasure in seeing his descendants receive that fate."

Trevor feels the breath catch in his throat and he staggers to his feet, Lisa is also rising, trying to calm her husband down and he knows that Sypha and Adrian are talking to him but he can't focus on that. He grabs the bottle form the table and breaks for the door relived when no one tries to stop him.

Damn the foolishness of Belmont's, Vlad thinks with a scowl as he stalks the halls of his castle. You'd think a few centuries of fighting night creatures would give them some sense, but no. And now there's one lost in his castle and his wife and son are upset at him about it!

Thankfully the Belmont hasn't gone far, caught in the twisting magic of the castle, and he steps out onto a balcony to see the man hunched over against the cold wind and staring around in confusion.

The Belmont, Trevor as Lisa had insisted, turns to face him and his back goes immediately stiff, one hand jerking towards his waist. He doesn't try to pull out that whip though.

"Hey, funny story I could have sworn this was the way out." He says in a voice that is trying to sound joking but failing miserably.

"The enchantments on this castle are designed to confuse attackers, your clan most of all."

"And yet you claim you regret our- what happened?!" Trevor snaps "Trying to put on a good image in front of your family, keep them from seeing the monster underneath." It's a weak barb and Vlad keeps his face neutral as he stares down at the man.

"The front of this castle was once littered with skeletons." He states "My wife knows what I have done Belmont, if you think to provoke me you wont succeed. All this is doing is wasting time while you freeze yourself to death."

"Didn't know you cared."

"I don't. But I have sworn to bring you back unharmed and I do not break my word." He says firmly steeping to the side to leave room for the Belmont to pass. "Now maybe you can stop acting like a child and we can return to this tiresome dinner."

Trevor eyes him suspiciously and gives a considering look to the edge of the balcony before sighing and walking past him. Vlad follows him thankful that he did not have to knock the man out and drag him back, Lisa and Adrian would have been very upset at that.

There's several pleasant minuets of quiet as he leads the way back to the kitchen but expecting the Belmont to keep quiet was clearly a fools hope.

"You said you were friends with Leon Belmont?" Vlad hides an eye roll answering with a short sharp

"Yes."

"That wasn't mentioned in any of the family stories." Trevor pushes and Vlad finds himself losing his grip on his patience.

"The stories you were told as a child. How old are you Belmont? I can't imagine you had many years of training before the church reared it's head."

"I got enough to survive!" Trevor snaps "Enough to bring down creatures of the night."

"Lesser creatures only no doubt." He says dismissively "And yet you stand here in the home of a Vampire Lord, for love of his son, and I for some reason have yet to kill you. That more than anything should show you that these matters are not as simple as humans like to make them."

There's a long tense moment as Trevor thinks that over and Vlad honestly isn't sure if he's going to bolt again but eventually he relaxes,

"I'd say it's for the same reason.  Shit, this is not where i expected this night to go."

"For once Belmont I can agree with you." He says, turning away and walking back to the kitchen, there's a flurry of footsteps as Belmont catches back up with him. This time the man thankfully holds his tongue and they make it almost to the kitchen before Vlad stops placing a hand firmly on Trevor's shoulder.

"What want another heart to dead heart?" The man quips trying and failing to pull away.

"No." He states and stares down at the man with his best glare. "I do not like you dating Adrian, but this is his choice and I will not interfere but should you hurt him in anyway I will make sure you line dies for good. Understand me?" He's made men faint in fear with less but the Belmont at least has his family's pride and squares his shoulders and nodding.

"Yeah, I get it."

"Good." He doesn't waste any more time and sweeps back into the kitchen,

"Vlad, did you find him?" Lisa asks with a frown that turns to relief as Trevor steps inside.

"Hey, sorry about the trouble Mrs- Lisa."

"You should be!" Adrian snaps forcing his way into Trevor's space. "You know how dangerous this place can be and yet you run of."

"Relax fangs, I'm fine." Trevor says putting his hands up.

"Yes because you have more luck than sense." Sypha says pushing her way in next to Adrian.

"Hey I can be sensible!" Adrian scoffs at that but doesn't stop his clear fretting. It's somewhat amusing seeing the man caught between them being nagged at and fussed over in turns.

Vlad meant what he said to the Belmont. He doesn't approve, thinks Adrian could do far better. But not for the same reasons as before. Trevor Belmont is a damaged man that clings to his trauma and hides it with jokes and alcohol but he has some of the honor and nobility that came so easily to Leon, unlike some of his forefathers.

So not as bad as it could have been.

Notes:

So it's been a while since I was involved with the Castlevania fandom or series so I hope my characterization is ok. I just had the first part of this floating around and it was such a fun idea I had to come back and finish it.
