Work Text:

Eula glares at the entrance of Mondstadt, steeling herself before she heads towards the headquarters.  The stares and whispers hardly phase her, but she just knows that nosy librarian will somehow sense her return even though she purposely neglected to send any notice.  Taking a deep breath, Eula does her best to mentally prepare herself.

Before she can move forward, a shout catches her attention and Eula turns her attention upward.  A soft smile graces her features for a moment before quickly being hidden behind her usual scowl.   There is one other person who never fails to miss her returns to the city.

Even from a distance, Eula can see the bright smile that spreads across Amber’s face.  Within seconds, her feet touch the ground and Eula braces herself, knowing what is to come.  Amber races forward, clumsily packing her glider away, and nearly tripping in her haste.  Stepping forward, Eula manages to catch Amber before she can fall, exhaling sharply at the impact.

The sound of Amber’s gentle laughter surrounds her and Eula allows herself a moment to indulge in the familiar warmth.  It doesn’t take long before Amber winds her arms around Eula’s neck and squeezes tight, her voice just as sunny as always.  “You’re back!”

“And I see you’re as clumsy as always.”  Eula rolls her eyes, her hold lingering well after Amber has managed to right herself.

Amber giggles, her eyes shining as she looks up to meet Eula’s gaze.  “I had to make sure you didn’t try to run off before we could catch up!”

Eula huffs, averting her eyes.  “I doubt I would ever manage it.”

“That’s right!”  Amber shifts, moving to the side until she has a firm grasp on Eula’s arm.  She glances up, eyes full of mischief when their gazes meet.  “I’ll just have to track you down if you try.”

A light flush colors Eula’s cheeks and she does her best to ignore the sudden fluttering within her chest.  Clearing her throat, Eula manages a dry response, “Oh?  Such bold words from the fearsome Outrider.”

With a laugh, Amber tugs Eula toward the city.  “I bet you haven’t been eating properly, let me treat you to a meal.”  Her voice raises as they near the city gates, “You can tell me all about how you’ve been working hard to keep things safe.”

Eula narrows her eyes, knowing exactly what Amber is trying to do, but the expression does little good.  Amber has long grown immune to such things, determined to sing her praises whenever possible.

Amber lets out a happy hum as a few people spare curious glances in their direction, pulling Eula forward until they reach Good Hunter.  Eula lets Amber slip away, keeping her distance as she talks animatedly with Sara, and pretending not to notice the suspicious looks that come her way.

Thankfully it does not take long for Amber to make her selections and she quickly begins to put everything together, waving Eula over toward the stove.  She straightens up, puffing out her chest with a grin.  “I hope you’re in the mood for sticky honey roast.  One of our honorary knights has been teaching me a thing or two and I think I’ve nearly perfected this recipe.”

Eula raises her brow, thinking back to one of the last times she experienced Amber’s cooking.

As if sending where her thoughts were headed, Amber pouts, reaching out to poke Eula’s shoulder.  “I know what you’re thinking and I’ve gotten better!”

Crossing her arms, Eula snorts.  “At least you’re not using that explosive puppet.”

A blush spreads across Amber’s cheeks.  “That was one time!”

“A very memorable time.”

Amber sticks out her tongue.  “Just you wait, I’m going to make you the best dish you’ve ever tasted!”

The corner of Eula’s mouth quirks slightly, a hint of a smile.  “We’ll see.”

Swatting at Eula’s arm, Amber huffs, but her eyes are shining with mirth.  She finishes putting the final touches on the dish before placing it into the stove.  A comfortable silence falls over them and Amber leans against Eula, tangling their fingers together and squeezing softly.  “I’m glad you’re back.  I’ve missed you.”

Eula gently returns the gesture, fingers running over Amber’s knuckles.  Words catch in her throat, but she knows Amber can hear what she cannot say out loud.

I missed you too.
