Waffle Cat Family Cat

Summary:

Jason did not let anybody into his apartment. He hasn't even told anybody about his apartment.
Now he's out of maple syrup.

Notes:

As is usual, I would like to say all of my batfam characterizations are a result of fanfiction! If I got something wrong about anybody you'd like to correct me on, please let me know!

This is how Jason learns Marinette is also a human! So it takes place part-way through Alfred's fic.

WARNING: mild swearing

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“So? What do you think?”

“I like them.”

“I told you they have the best waffles in Gotham!”

“I’m surprised there is such a thing as take-out waffles.”

Jason frowns at the voices coming from his kitchen.

Stephanie he recognizes. If her irritating voice hadn’t given her away the conversation topic certainly would have done so. What other lunatic talks about take-out waffles at 3pm on a Tuesday?

But who is she talking to?

Jason strides into the kitchen, only to come to a halt as he sees there is a strange girl with dark black/blue hair sitting at his small dining room table with Stephanie, a large plate-sized waffle covered in blue and black berries and absolutely smothered in maple syrup (the good proper shit from Canada, not the cheap crap he had to suffer through as a young kid).

“Jason!” Steph smiles at him, mouth smiling wide and eyes promising murder, “You never told us your magic cat was actually a magic girl!”

Said girl is staring determinedly at her giant waffle, shoulders hunched up around her ears. Jason can see she’s staring at him out of the very corner of her eye, and the slowness that she raises a dripping piece of waffle to her mouth shows how much she’s focused on Jason’s reaction.

She looks scared, and Jason hates it. He’s gotten used to having a shitty (albeit oddly affectionate) magical cat shedding all over everything he loves and making poor attempts to suffocate him in his sleep by laying across his face at night. Sure, that said cat can turn into a person is important and definitely something he should have known about, but honestly? If she wanted to hurt him, or any of his family, there have been so many opportunities for her to do so. She can teleport and disintegrate shit, she could have murdered his entire family without any of them realizing what was happening, but she deliberately showed him those powers and then proceeded to never use them in a harmful manner.

Yeah, she used them in an annoying manner, but never a harmful one.

So human Marinette? Jason’s biggest concern is how old she is and where her parents are. He’s pretty sure Bruce keeps adoption paperwork in his office at the manor for… reasons… Jason could ask Alfred for copies if need be.

“What, I’m not allowed to keep secrets any more?” Jason steps forwards and slowly runs a hand over her hair, a gentle petting motion that she (as a cat) greatly enjoys. At his non-reaction Marinette slowly starts to relax, leaning into his hand as he gently pets her hair.

Really, it could use a wash. But that’s a discussion for another time.

Stephanie rolls her eyes, dumping more of his precious maple syrup over her already soaking waffles. “Of course you’re allowed secrets. Just not adorable ones!!” Steph reaches in Marinette’s direction with grasping fingers, “I just want to pinch those little cheeks, she’s so cute!!”

Jason sighs and leans against a counter; he only has two chairs because his table is so small (also to discourage multiple people from visiting at the same time). “No pinching, Waffle Girl. Also, you better buy me some more syrup since you’re apparently going to be using the entire bottle on your single waffle.”

Lips pursed in a very obviously fake pout, Steph deliberately pours the last of Jason’s maple syrup onto her drowning waffle while maintaining eye contact. Marinette snorts quietly, glancing at the two of them carefully as she takes another bite of her own waffle.

“Fine.” A large glob of peanut butter is dropped onto Steph’s drowning waffle. “I will buy more of your fancy syrup, you food snob.”

“I’m not a food snob!” Jason ignores the raised eyebrows judging his life choices. “I just don’t like eating literal garbage!”

Steph snorts. “Such a posh thing to say, Jaybird.”

He rolls his eyes. “Yeah, that’s me. The posh one.”

-----

He tries not to slam the door as Steph leaves, he really does, but Jason has never been that good at self control.

God fucking damnit.

Being a cat parent was hard enough, being an actual human parent?

Jason isn’t sure he’s capable of pulling that off without ruining whatever poor sucker he’s responsible for. Like Marinette.

“Ummm….. Jason?”

The voice is soft, unfamiliar, and yet Jason feels like he could easily be able to recognize it given a day or so.

“What’s up, kitten?”

She’s hunched in on herself again, shoulders rounded, arms crossed, eyes down.

Wow. That hurts his heart. There’s like, and actual ache in his chest at that look.

“I… I don’t....”

Jason slowly walks forwards, kneeling in front of Marinette and gently taking her hands into his. She doesn’t look at him, just at their joined hands, but it’s an improvement.

“Listen, kid, I’m pretty shit with feelings and I’m sure you know that by now.” She flinches, and her hands tug gently against his grasp. “What I mean is I’m not going to ask why you were a cat, or why you didn’t let me know you could be a human sooner, if that was even an option for you. Your reasons are your own, and to be honest you’ve had loads of opportunities to fuck things up in a bad way for me and my family that you haven’t taken.” He smiles gently as she peeks up at him, blue eyes wide and searching. “Whatever your reasons are, you can tell me when you’re ready or not at all. You’re more than welcome to stay here however long you need,” he squeezes her hands gently, “for however long you’d like.”

She doesn’t move, or even seem to breathe, and for a minute Jason thinks that he’s managed to colossally fuck things up, but then he hears a shaky inhale and suddenly he’s almost falling on his ass as she drops down to her knees and slumps against him, her head tucking neatly underneath his chin.

His arms come up around her and he shifts so he’s sitting cross-legged on the ground and she’s sideways in his lap, curled up against him and clutching his shirt with both hands. She’s sobbing, quietly getting snot and tears all over Jason’s shirt.

Welp.

If she agrees to it, he’s definitely going to be asking Alfred how to adopt a kid.

Cat Marinette adopted him, now it’s time for him to adopt human Marinette.

Notes:

So, I wrote this in one sitting, while my Marinette-meets-Damian fic has been sitting in my google doc for over a month and I'm still not happy with it :/

Have some family acceptance feels to kick off Pride Month!!
