Work Text:
Weiss Schnee never did anything she didn’t want.
Adamant on never getting handheld for being blind, she refused an animal companion. Weiss Schnee never let anyone take that independence away.
Except when it came to her father. Who apparently thought it acceptable to drag her out of bed and take her to her monthly doctor’s visit, refusing to listen to her and leaving behind her walking stick.
Now, at 21 years old Weiss Schnee was left alone after her checkup. Her father had made up an excuse that work had called and informed her Winter would pick her up right after. Refusing to get any help, Weiss kept walking, counting the steps to make it to the front office having it memorized after the many times it has happened before. Muttering angrily at herself she turned a calculated corner only to get absolutely trucked.
Force throwing her off her feet she fell backward and slammed onto her ass, hiss ringing out through her teeth as the pain went through her body.
"What in the world is wrong with you!?" Weiss gasped out. Her legs were shaky as she got up from the floor, holding her head she waited for someone to answer only to be met with silence.
"Well? What do you have to say for yourself!?"
Again, silence.
Anger simmering in her chest. It took a different kind of asshole to ignore a blind person, one which Weiss was glad to tear into.
"Who runs into a blind girl and can't even apologize!"
Not a second later did Weiss let out an inhumane scream as the person wrapped their arms around her waist. Heart hammering Weiss tried to pry the person's arms off of her.
"What are you doing! Get off of me!" She tried taking a step back in hopes of catching her assailant off guard but the assailant followed with more force than necessary and caused them to crash onto the floor, again.
Panic finally settling at the possibility of this being a pervert of some kind, she opened her mouth to shout for help, but she heard someone come in before she could.
"Ruby!?"
The assailant. Or well Ruby from the sound of it, finally let go. Leaving Weiss sagging in relief.
"What in the world is going on here?" The same voice asked. Making her way onto her feet for the second time that day Weiss ground her teeth moving her head in the direction of the voice.
"She ran into me and didn't even apologize! Next thing I know I'm being assaulted!"
"Hey back off! She's mute! Didn't you see her try to sign?" The voice sounded angry, and if Weiss could guess it seemed they were getting closer to her.
Weiss scoffed, "can't you see I'm blind?"
A beat of silence passed before she heard some light shuffling away from her.
“Er- I’m sorry I didn’t-”
Weiss huffed, “exactly, now I demand an apology!”
"Weiss Schnee right?" Another, more husky voice asked. Weiss felt her anger rise at being ignored but wrinkled her nose.
"I recognize your voice. You're Blake Belladonna."
“Ah, babe what’s her being a Sneeze got to do with this?”
“Yang, she’s the daughter of the CEO of Schnee Dust Corp, the company my parents are suing.” Gods not this again, Weiss thought.
Weiss grounded her teeth together, “I don’t particularly care why a Belladonna and Yang are here; all I need before making my way would be an apology from her.”
Weiss waited impatiently as she heard the light shuffling of movement followed by a sigh.
"Eh- Ruby wants to say she's sorry. She was trying to find me to translate to the staff but I was kind of busy with Blake-" Weiss made a face at the implication.
"Next time keep it in your pants and prioritize your sister."
A small chortle was the reply to it and Weiss thought it sounded kind of cute.
"Ruby, don't laugh!" Yang whined.
"I told you we shouldn't have left her," Blake said.
"KitKat! You weren't complaining earlier!"
Weiss sighed as the conversation continued. "Belladonna. Yang. Ruby. As much fun as this hasn't been. I really must get going. Now have a nice day."
Touching the wall to make sure she was heading the right way she continued walking her intended path.
A tug at her shirt caused her to pause already knowing who it could be. "Yes?" She snapped turning around. It wouldn't do good for her to ignore a mute. Waiting patiently she flinched as she felt a hand run up her arm to push a piece of paper up to her face. "You know I can't read right?" Ruby pressed the paper a bit harder. Shoulders sagging Weiss extended her hand out feeling it fall onto her palm.
Maybe she'll get Winter to read it for her.
Later that evening Weiss made her way to her elder sister's room.
"Winter?"
"Yes, sister?"
Weiss pulled out the piece of paper that Ruby had given her.
"Could you tell me what this says?"
Winter was silent for a moment and Weiss could tell she was studying Weiss' face.
"Of course."
Weiss inwardly sighed in relief before handing her sister the note.
"Weiss, could I ask how this came to your possession?"
"Winter please, just read it for me."
Sighing Winter read it out loud, "I'm super sorry for today. If you're free tomorrow, call me and I'll make it up to you." Weiss felt her face flush.
"She also included her number, would you like for me to read it out loud?" Winter asked, clearly humored by the note, a small chuckle leaving her lips.
"Yes please.”
3 years later
Weiss had not expected falling in love with the dunce that had knocked her off and onto the ground, but life still threw curveballs at her no matter how many times she prepared herself for it. Both their elder sisters couldn't understand how they had fallen head over heels for the other one, and neither could Ruby or Weiss, but what they did know is how comfortable and right it felt.
Their first couple of meetings were difficult, seeing as Weiss can't see and Ruby can't talk, it wasn't until their friend Penny suggested they try morse code that they finally figured out to communicate without Yang or Blake nearby.
"Come here, Ruby," Weiss said. She sat on the edge of their couch hands opened wide waiting patiently for Ruby. Feeling her girlfriend's hands lace into her own, she pulled Ruby forward and into her lap and letting her rest her head onto her chest.
Both Ruby and Weiss were pretty private people, choosing to only curl up with friends or family and to hold hands to communicate effectively in public. If someone waved something at Weiss or asked Ruby a question, they would fill in the other on what was happening. For example, if someone was trying to get Weiss' attention, Ruby had to tap her direction and who it was, while if Ruby wanted to say something to someone who didn't know sign, Weiss could be her interpreter.
Ruby looked up at Weiss' face and took in the features of her lover's face. The smooth pale skin, her soft angelic white hair, and the scar running across her eye from an accident long ago. Ruby loved everything about her. Ever since they tripped over each other at the doctor's office, Ruby found herself head over heels for Weiss. Although their first interactions were cold and problematic thanks to Weiss' attitude, they had forged a deep relationship with each other throughout their first year of friendship before they decided to date.
Smiling softly up at Weiss she decided to tell her how much she loved her. Lifting her left hand she began tapping her message on Weiss's nose and watched as a blush formed onto her girlfriend's cheeks. "I love you too, Ruby."
Humming thoughtfully Weiss lifted her hand to find Ruby's face and traced her fingers from her neck to her cheek before leaning forward to kiss her sweetly.
"I love you so much, Ruby," Weiss whispered pulling her into another kiss. Ruby's hand took Weiss' own as the other wrapped behind her back and tapped a message across Weiss' back.
"I know. I love you too snow angel.”
Ruby sighed softly rubbing her cheek into her girlfriend's neck. The white-haired girl's arms wrapped around the younger one's body pulling her in closer. Ruby closed her eyes listening to the soft thumping of Weiss’ heart that slowly lulled her to sleep.
