The McVesselpocalypse

Summary:

One day in Smashville, Hornet takes the void babies to McDonald’s.

Work Text:

Working at a Smashville McDonald’s was… an experience. Not a bad experience— you were paid and treated especially well for a McDonald’s. It was just… an experience. Smashville was an interdimensional community with members of every shape, size, species, occupation, and more. The bizarre was normal in Smashville.

Like a small army of toddler-sized cloaked, insectile children and one large entity of a similar appearance stampeding into the playplace.

“...Sorry,” said the red-cloaked figure that was apparently some sort of chaperone as she produced handfuls of paper slips from her pockets.

Each slip was a scrawled order, sometimes just a crude picture of a Happy Meal.

“...I am Hornet. We’re… still getting accustomed to this place.”

The cashier just started taking their order. Standing around wondering what the hell was happening wouldn’t do any good with a horde of hungry… whatever they were. (Apart from adorable.)

The children poured into the playplace like a tiny grey tsunami, funneling into the entrance tube like the last of a drink being sucked through a straw. They quite audibly began fanning out through the entire structure. Despite being unable to vocalize, a dozen tiny creatures rampaging through plastic and plexiglass certainly made a sound.

According to the girl called Hornet, they were called Vessels, and this was their very first time at McDonald’s. Despite their expressionless masks, they seemed so… happy. It was honestly heartwarming, especially when other children gradually began interacting with them.

By the time all of the food was ready, Hornet looked like a pack mule carrying all of the bags. When she approached the playplace, Hornet called out to them. Some of them visible through the plexiglass visibly froze at the promise of food. Vessel after Vessel began popping out of the slides like some sort of magic trick, Hornet counting each tiny masked head.

“Wait. Where is Hollow?”

There was a tapping in response from above. The giant Vessel was wedged in one of the tubes, apparently stuck in an attempt to reverse direction when the food arrived.

It was the only prompt needed for the little bug children to pour back into the structure to rescue their oversized sibling. After a bit of pushing, pulling, and wiggling, the entire horde of Vessels emerged triumphant.

In Smashville, you see a LOT of things. But a shadowy bug baby using tendrils of darkness to vacuum chicken nuggets into their eye socket as they and their siblings traded Happy Meal toys was new.

And adorable.
