Amy felt like she was in the Twilight Zone. There was no way that this could really be happening. Maybe it was all just a bad dream. Bright and Ephram weren’t really sitting on her couch kissing each other. That was just insane. Bright liked girls. And Ephram liked…well, her. Amy pinched herself. Well, that rules out a nightmare.
As she continued to watch them kiss, Amy tried to figure out what she was feeling. Shock? You betcha. Jealously? Check. Betrayal? Maybe a little. Ephram was supposed to be hers. She had first dibs. And even though she hadn’t paid much attention to him lately, he wasn’t supposed to hook up with her brother, for God’s sake. He and Bright were supposed to hate each other.
She thought back to the past few weeks. While she had been ignoring Ephram in favor of Laynie, Bright had stepped in and took her place. Bright and Ephram ate lunch together and hung out after school and on weekends when time allowed. A few times, Amy had witnessed looks and touches between the two, but it didn’t register with her that it meant anything.
Amy hid and peeked around the doorway as they stopped kissing. She could see Bright smiling and hear the low rumble of Ephram’s laughter.
“What’s so funny, man?” Bright asked.
“You. You’re grinning like an idiot. It‘s kinda cute, if not a little weird.”
Bright’s smile widened, if that was even possible. “Yeah. I can’t help it.”
“Dork.”
“Geek.”
She heard them both laughing and it made her feel warm inside. She couldn’t remember the last time she had heard Bright laugh, really laugh, or the last time she had seen either of them that happy. Maybe, she thought, this wasn’t such a bad thing after all.
