i set out to rule the world

Summary:

He had felt like the entire universe was at his fingertips, had felt safe, loved, like he belonged, once. He would ask what happened to that innocent child, but the answer was standing in front of him, wearing his golden gauntlet.

or, what goes through Loki's mind during That Scene in Infinity War, based on a song

Notes:

this is based on the song East by Sleeping at Last, which i heavily connect to this scene

Work Text:

I set out to rule the world
With only a paper shield and a wooden sword.
No mountain dare stand in my way,
Even the oceans tremble in my wake.

How innocent both of them had been, once. It’s been centuries since then. Two children, playing at warriors, not yet venerated as gods.

The tide is brave, but always retreats.
Even the sand, it cowers under my feet.
My kingdom towers above it all,
While I sleep safe and sound in my cardboard walls.

He had felt like the entire universe was at his fingertips, had felt safe, loved, like he belonged, once. He would ask what happened to that innocent child, but the answer was standing in front of him, wearing his golden gauntlet.

Now I bear little resemblance to the king I once was.
I bear little resemblance to the king I could become.
Maybe paper is paper, maybe kids will be kids-
Lord, I want to remember how to feel like I did.

Those times, those days of innocence, were over now. Loki and Thor had grown up. The world had changed them. Thanos had changed him. Loki would do anything to go back to how it was before.

So I draw my sword with the morning sun,
I summon the moon as soon as the day is done.
The clouds march on, on my command.
Even the rain, it falls according to plan.
The trees bow down and give their leaves.
I humbly accept their offerings of peace.

He liked to think he had started to make amends. He had offered the role of king to Thor. He had brought peace to the Nine Realms, had been a more fair ruler to his people than the Allfather before him. It was a start.

The years wore on and changed my heart,
The leading role for a smaller part.

He had thought he lost Thor, before, on Sakaar. And he knew he would (could) never let it come to that again. I once thought the world of you. Loki longed for that to be true once more. To be worthy. A return to how it was. A new beginning.

Now I bear little resemblance to the king I once was.
I bear little resemblance to the king I could become.
Maybe paper is paper, maybe kids will be kids.
But Lord, I want to remember how to feel like I did.

In the end, his mind was made up. His brother had to survive. Loki owed him that, at the very least. Thor would have a new beginning. He would make sure of it. So he stepped out of the shadows, conjuring but a small dagger, knowing it would be one of the last things he would do.

I set out to rule the world
With only a paper shield and a wooden sword.
