RUN!

Summary:

Legend was having an eventful day.

...Actually, never mind. He was rather having a pleasant day so far. It was what happened 5 minutes ago that made him decide that it was an eventful day.

Mainly, it was the fact that he was running away from the village knights.

Written for Kirb for the LUAAP 2021!

Notes:

Hello everyone! I am here to give you a fic based on the wonderful artwork of Kirb! When I saw their artwork of the Chain in a fairy forest, I immediately knew that I had to write something about it. So without further adieu, I hope that you enjoy!

As usual, I own nothing. This was completely inspired by the Legend of Zelda, Linked Universe, and Kirb’s beautiful art.

This piece was inspired by Kirb’s artwork of the LU boys, which you can find here: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/772466020781785141/877922918879858688/image0.png.

Work Text:

Legend was having an eventful day.

...Actually, never mind. He was rather having a pleasant day so far. It was what happened 5 minutes ago that made him decide that it was an eventful day.

Mainly, it was the fact that he was running away from the village knights.

The group had arrived in Castletown in an unknown Hyrule. Time made reservations at an inn, and everyone went to explore and sightsee.  There was even a festival occurring at the time that they had arrived. Colorful streamers danced in the air, and the banners were exuberant and joyful. Children ran about with candy in one hand and were playing with the other kids with smiles on their faces and laughter bubbling out of their lips and floating into the air. Lanterns were strung about on lines, and even fairies were involved in the celebration. They danced about and flitted around the heroes as they took in the festivities.

“Hey Old Man, can we go and explore? We won’t get lost, I promise!”

...Legend knew that they were going to get lost.

“C’mon pops, we’ve been on the road for 2 weeks. Let’s enjoy ourselves!” Warriors slung a shoulder around their eldest.

“...Please?” was all Wind said before activating what everyone dubbed “puppy dog eye” mode. In other words, it was futile for Time to say no.

Everyone looked towards their leader with hope shining in their eyes.

Time smiled. “Just don’t get arrested.”

And with that, they scattered.

Wind dragged Twilight and Warriors with him to look at the games on display. Wild and Hyrule went off to explore and probably get lost. Time went over to some tree and sat down on the bench to people watch. Sky went off to go look for something to get his girlfriend, and Four made a beeline for the blacksmith stall.

The thought of getting a few tips from the blacksmith crossed his mind. As he decided to check the man’s stall out later, Legend decided to peruse the stalls and see what people had for sale.

Vendors at stalls were selling all sorts of different festival foods and knick-knacks. Shouts of “Come get your fresh hot buttered apples here!” or, “Spring Solstice pins, only 200 rupees! Come get yours today!” were thrown his way as he fought the stream of people coming from all directions. He even spotted Twilight and Wind playing some sort of ball game at a vendor stall with Warriors nagging Twilight to “throw higher”.

Legend made a stop at the bakery booth.

“Hello young man, what can I do for you today?” The woman working the stall was short and held kindness in her eyes as she allowed him to peruse the confections that were on sale. Cupcakes were stacked in the display case, with icing and fresh berries glistening on top and shimmering in the evening light. There were pastries with fruit filling leaking out of the edges, shiny and mouth-watering. Packs of cookies were lined up, each cut and frosted to look like the fairies that were fluttering about him.

Legend made it seem like he wasn’t one for sweets, but in reality, he probably had the biggest sweet tooth out of everyone in the Chain. He just didn’t like to admit it. “I’ll take a 2 pack of cupcakes, please.”

“Of course dear! That will be 35 rupees.” As he handed over his rupees, she collected them and placed the cupcakes into a box. He thanked the woman and went on his merry way. He heard some sort of band playing music somewhere within the swirling mass of people coming to and fro. He smiled as he went to take a bite of his treat.

Everything was very, very , smooth for him. There had been no trouble whatsoever since they arrived in this Hyrule. Everyone seemed to be having a great time.

Maybe Hylia decided to give us a break. Goddess knows we deserve it, Legend thought.

Then, he heard a voice shouting. A very familiar voice shouting.

“You cheapskate!”

“Hey, what’s with the yelling, kid? It’s a genuine treasure!”

Legend looked to his right and stared. There, he saw a crowd forming around the area as Hyrule yelled at the vendor, with Wild right behind him with a silent glare pointed towards the man. “Everyone knows that the Hero of Legend wore a blue hat after his adventures were over! You’re just trying to make a quick buck by selling all this junk thinking people will buy it! I’d never buy from you!”

Legend sighed and placed his cupcake back into the box. He gently pushed his way through the crowd to the front and walked over to the two heroes.

“Look kid, if you’re not gonna buy it, then just walk away. I would hate to call the knights over to escort you away.” The man didn’t sound sorry at all.

Legend decided to butt in. “Is there a problem here, sir? Are these two boys bothering you?”

Hyrule looked incredibly relieved. “Oh, thank Hylia, you’re here! See, I told you! The Hero of Legend wore a blue hat!”

Legend looked Hyrule in the eyes. “I’m sorry, I think you’re mistaken. The Hero of Legend died hundreds of years ago. The possibility of me being that man is preposterous if I must say.”

Wild was dumbfounded. “What? What are you talking ab--” Legend moved Hyrule aside with two pats to his shoulder and a side glance at Wild. He winked at the two of them with a smirk. The two of them shut their mouths.

Legend turned back around to face the man. “I for one, am incredibly interested in these fine, fine treasures. You say these items belong to the Hero of Legend? You must tell me all about them!”

The man perked up, his eyes holding a hidden smugness. Legend could practically see thinking “sucker” in his head as he sold his pitch to Legend. “Yes! These are true, genuine treasures from the Golden Age of Hyrule! I am a historian specializing in this area, and I always had a great interest in the Hero of Legend! I know all about his life and his adventures!”

The items lining the man’s booth looked like some of his items, but they were also incredibly off. Legend caught a glance of an off-balanced copy of the Tempered Sword, his hook-shot, his bow, and even his portrait…?  It didn’t even look anything like him. The “portrait” was a far resemblance to what he looked like, with his hair painted blue instead of his signature pink. They still can’t get my nose right. He thought to himself.

Legend kept himself from rolling his eyes. He could see that this man was a phony from a mile away. He held up the hat that Hyrule had just been criticizing. The hat was a very bright white; it almost hurt his eyes to look at it. "This very hat was the cap that the Hero of Legend wore when he sealed away Ganon for the first time! He was only a 3-year-old child, a sign that he was goddess born! He took up the sword the moment he could walk and set out to defeat the monster that he was born to battle.”

Now that the two of them had caught on to what was happening, Hyrule and Wild were trying to keep themselves from snickering.

Legend let out a gasp. “Incredible! Do you mind if I try it on?”

“By all means, sir, be my guest.”

Legend handed his hat to Wild and picked up the hat with what looked to be reverence. He placed it upon his head. "It certainly feels legendary. How much for it?”

“A mere 500 rupees!”

“What a steal! I’ll take it!”

The man reached down below to grab a bag for the hat.

“Oh wait, what’s that over there?”

The swindler turned.

Legend whipped back to face Hyrule and Wild.

“RUN!”

And they sprinted away from the stand to the shouts of “Hey, get back here! Guards! GUARDS!”

All three of them were laughing their heads off as they raced through the streets of Castletown. As they turned a corner, they saw a squad of knights nipping at their heels.

“Scatter!” Legend yelled, and the three of them split up to cover more ground.

He dashed through the alleyways, twisting and turning until he could no longer see the knights pursuing him. He used his Roc’s feather to get up onto the rooftops. He smirked and faced the street when he was bumped into by another mass.

As Legend was about to fight whoever bumped into him, he noticed that the man had long blonde hair and a face full of scars. And he was very out of breath.

“Legend! Nice work back there! You played that man like a drum!”

Legend smiled. “No problem kid, he was practically asking for it. Where’d Hyrule go?”

“He went to go cause a distraction. He went into fairy mode and enlisted the fairies for help.”

And sure enough, a swarm of fairies came crashing down the street, the knights being chased by it with the crowd looking on in laughter. Legend and Wild were probably the least of their worries anymore.

All of a sudden, Legend remembered his cupcakes. Miraculously, he had managed to keep a hold of them through the chase.

As he held up the box, he noticed that the paper had been wrinkled and the bow came undone. He gingerly lifted the box up and let out a sigh of relief to see that the confections had been unharmed by the pursuit. Legend held out one of the cakes to Wild.

“You want one? Don’t tell Wars I bought them, I’ll never hear the end of it.”

Wild let out a chuckle as he grabbed one of the cupcakes out of the box. They each took a bite of their cakes and relished in the sweet frosting that graced their tongues. They each sighed as they finished their treats.

Then he remembered his prize from the heist. He took the white hat off his head and held it out to Wild. Wild looked shocked at the offering and accepted it with a smile as he passed the blue hat back to Legend. Wild placed the hat onto his head and started giggling about how he thought it suited him.

Legend spotted Wild taking out his Sheikah Slate from the corner of his eye.

“Would you wanna take a picture?” Legend gave a small smile as he slung his arm around Wild. With a flash, the picture was stored in the Slate.

And as the night continued above the rooftops, the two heroes laughed over cupcakes, heroes caps, and reminisced over what was sure to go down in their memories as one crazy, crazy night.
