Shinichi Kudo is finally returning to a life of normalcy after an antidote for the apoptoxin has been developed-- going to school, having fun with friends, and the like. However, this new normal slowly reveals itself to be an endless purgatory sealing him inside the mundanity of high school forever. How can he ever escape this nightmare? And who's this classmate that feels so familiar?

Okay so it turns out I have more thoughts I wanted to share about the whole creation process, but feel free to tune out if you'd like.
So I honestly can't judge whether the story's coherent anymore, because I had a general conception of how I wanted it to be at the start... and then I had to rewrite 15 of the first pages because things weren't adding up anymore. Hopefully Shinichi's thought process made some sort of sense?
I also definitely feel like the ending was rushed. I think the thing with Ran and Shinichi having an irreparable falling out seems a little shoehorned in, but I felt like it was an essential part of the story, because otherwise Shinichi just seems like a selfish asshole. There are cons of Shinichi having to return to the real world... and he chooses to do so despite these cons. I don't know if that came off the way I wanted to though. Overall I think I was too fixated on giving Shinichi agency since he seems to be a little lacking in that department in a lot of the doujins I've seen, but I think this backfired and Kaito ended up just getting dragged along with the plot. A bit cringe, but whatever! It's 98 pages in 2 months, babey!!
I would encourage everyone not to think too hard about this story. I feel like it falls apart under scrutiny but if you simply coast on the vibes it becomes an enjoyable, even profound experience!!

I've never done something this ambitious before, so I hope everyone enjoyed! Even though it was 98 pages... it still doesn't feel quite enough to convey what I wanted to say! I had friends tell me, "Oh, just illustrate a couple of the scenes, it'll be fine," but then I didn't listen and went ahead and drew this anyways. This definitely isn't my best work, but it's the first time I was able to read my own manga and become immersed in the world I was creating, so that's a huge milestone for me.
Rereading this, I feel like the strongest scene here was the action scene... which made me a bit sad. I mean, it's supposed to be a ship fic and the best part is the goddamn action scene??? But I thought about it some more and honestly this is probably my greatest takeaway after watching any given Detective Conan movie, so I suppose I was very true to form in that sense. I think the middle was paced perfectly, and I am still absolutely vibing that I was able to put in the magic trick, which I borrowed from this video: https://fronchtost. /post/666067492633034752

I always love people's different interpretation of Pandora!! And since I like time-loop based angst I absolutely love this so much! I especially love when Ran switching back and forth to Aoko, and then Kaito's saying he won't have anyone if the Nakamoris isn't around.... my goddd my heartttt 😭😭

  I just can't get over the fact that Kaito and Aoko were, in some way, prototypes for Shinichi and Ran. Like obviously they have their differences, but you can't deny that from a character design and narrative function standpoint they're very close parallels, so I wanted to play around with that a little bit! Kaito is afraid of confrontation with Aoko, so in some ways he doesn't want her there... but on the other hand he can't seem to let go of her completely either, and I'm kind of obsessed with this weird bastardization of the two. And likewise with Shinichi... he knows that this isn't his Ran, but the words that Aoko says rings so true to him that it still hurts.
  And yeah! I think while Magic Kaito is a comedy at heart, it does leave Kaito very emotionally vulnerable just because there isn't anyone who he can confide in, aside from Jii, and maybe his mom? But my point being, Shinichi has a lot of adults, like the FBI agents and Agasa and a ton of other people who are looking out for him. I think Detective Conan is honestly the diametric opposite of Magic Kaito in this aspect. He's supposed to be keeping the whole Conan thing under wraps but the sheer amount of people who know his secret is laughable. It's not trying to be comedic but it ends up pretty ridiculous anyways, whereas MK is trying to be funny, but leaves Kaito very emotionally isolated in the end.

    I agree with the way you view these stories, I also like that about them. Haven't really realised that they are opposites also in the aspect of having people to confide in. If you think about it, with Ai and Agasa, Conan is surrounded by people who know about him on the daily. Whereas Kaito only has his mom? And the "butler"? He is always making a show and pretending it's all fun and games, but he is very sad and lonely beneath it all. I always liked that.
    Anyway, great doujin ^^ I was a bit confused at first but I really liked your take on Pandora and how this would resolve. Also kinda cool, that the two of them finally found out about each other and got closer through that. It is over now, but finally they can be there for eachother. Kaito doesn't have to hide from Shinichi anymore and that's probably a weight lifted from his shoulders aswell.
    Btw I laughed at the "Emotionally! I meant emotionally" and the "Pandora doxxed you" hahaha

First of all, that coffee can? A+ lmfao And that bit with Shinichi emptying his pockets omg loved that. oo and every time reality sorta shifted or collapsed and started over. I mean hot damn what a compelling story I was hooked. and the ending - big oof to the feels but still so perfect

  FUNNY STORY ABOUT THE COFFEE CAN. I based it off of the Mr. Brown coffee brand (which??? I thought was an Asia thing but turns out it's just Taiwan??? oops) and when I pulled up a picture the guy in the logo's Megure energy was OFF THE CHARTS. It took me a while to find because I had misremembered the brand as "Mr. Bean" and I kept getting that character with a mole, and so from the start I had intended on pulling a WcDonald's and changing one letter. Anyways what I'm trying to say is that I don't think anyone expected the hot take of "Inspector Megure's Nonbinary Swag on a Coffee Can" when they opened this up but by god I'm not sorry!!
  I was actually a little hesitant about the part with the pockets!! I feel like if I had more time I would have actually taken it out... I remember thinking about it and the first time through I was like "haha this would be really funny". But then I kept looking at it and I was like "IS this funny???" and by the time it was time to draw it it was too late to change it, but I also thought it wasn't funny anymore. So I'm glad you liked it!! I'm glad I kept it in :D
  I wonder if it's bad form to talk about what I envisioned this to be, rather than commenting on what it is? But the truth is, all of the linework in this manga was freehanded-- the sketch layer WAS the final linework, and the reality collapsing pages were double the work because I had to draw twice as many lines. Originally I wanted the pencil draft to actually be different from the linework... the pencil draft would be what the "script" was supposed to be, and the final linework would show a deviation from the script, and thus the collapse of the narrative... but I ran out of time for that! Maybe I'll add it back in later?
  On my design of Pandora-- So one of the other fandoms I'm into right now is Pathologic, which is this old Russian survival game about three healers saving a small town on the Russian steppe from a deadly plague. In that town, there is this weird and fucked up building called the Polyhedron, and this design is based very loosely on that building. (VERY loosely. I seem to have a natural affinity for turning everything into a fruit/plant-based motif. The actual building is all just abstract geometry.) In the game, only kids can enter the Polyhedron, and it's sort of sealed off in its own way, and in particular there's a fanfic in that fandom that lives in my mind rent-free, where one of the healers were sealed in there, living out years of his life in a tragic utopia. After I plotted out the basic outline for this story, I realized they were pretty similar, so I said "fuck it" and made Pandora based on the Polyhedron LOL

I think that’s actually a really interesting interpretation of pandora, you live forever in a world you create. I also love how Ran and Aoko blend into the same people, its a very good way to draw parallels to their situation.

maybe my favorite thing here is how within those first few pages you really deftly sow the idea that there is something actually Wrong™ with the world that Shinichi's in, and i love the way that feeling just grows until Kaito resets them the first time.

Oh wow. I feel like I have no words to express how good this is. This is just so pretty? It feels like reading an actual manga, with the style and the really nice way the panels are laid out and everything really. This must have taken so much time and I am in awe of this dedication. There are so many moments that I just paused to admire the art or composition (Kudo's face as he first wonders what is going on, the way Kudo thinks about his memories like with Ran, the reflection when talking about how the night can't fall, the reflection as the glider moves up, so many just so nice)
I admit I was confused the first time, but wow on my first reread it was so nice. The emotional beats just feel like they are hit masterfully. Kudo's confusion as the loops occur. (Ran changing into Aoko and back and forth was so interesting.) Kuroba being desperate. The action scene as they fell? So intense. And then the ending felt really meaningful. I really like how positive Kudo is, which can make sense with how much support he has compared to Kuroba. His line when he tells Kuroba to keep going (and eventually maybe forgive himself) was just so nice and heroic almost, something I can see him saying. It's a really nice message, to keep on moving forward and having an actual effect on people even if it's hard. (And it was also fun to see their interactions, with Kuroba being bothersome haha during the card trick earlier, with Kudo being exasperated and then pleasantly surprised, and then Kudo hiding the earlier shouting when Kuroba asked about what happened in the illusion. I really like the way you wrote their dynamic! And I thought the jokes were amusing!) And then I reread this again just to look it at all once more.
I'm glad I also saw on Tumblr that you might print this? You should put the interest check link in the notes here as well! I'm going to need to figure out how to keep my eye on any possible updates haha. I think this was a really amazing comic and will probably be thinking about this! Thanks for writing, drawing, and sharing!

I know in a comic this long there surely HAD to be bangers but I really do love the ones you listed out!! And yeah it did take a lot of time but I was really passionate about this concept and I really wanted to do it justice!
  Honestly I'm really glad that you're upfront about it being confusing the first time. I knew it was an incredibly ambitious and convoluted story that I wanted to tell, so I'm glad the reread was a better experience!! I've always been obsessed with stories that... get richer on rereads, I suppose! On one hand, it's accepting the fact that most people won't do that reread, and will walk away with an incomplete picture most of the time. But I'm glad that readers like you are rewarded for your time and patience!
  I knew exactly how I wanted to end it; in my head I knew it was Shinichi who wanted to return to the Real World :tm:, but when it came to putting it down on paper and making Shinichi explain himself, I suddenly got very self-conscious about it LOL. I was like, "Oh no, I feel like this is so out of character for him to be so straightforward and sentimental; would he really say something like this?!", so when you said that it was nice and heroic and you could see him saying it, I was really happy! I was a bit worried that I was getting too carried away with the whole convoluted plot that I didn't write their dynamic well, but it seems like that's not the case!

It's soo good, really! I've never seen a similar interpretation of what pandora does and I really like this version a lot!
Also... the card trick... AAAAAH!!! THAT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITES TO PERFORM!!! It really made my heart hammer like crazy to find it drawn out in a dōjin!!!
And how they wake up in mid air... and 4th wall break...

  Honestly the magic trick was a super self-indulgent sort of thing, I sort of shoehorned in plot relevance but ultimately it was just because I really loved that particular trick!! It was actually pretty challenging to storyboard, since a lot of the flourish is lost when you only take moments from the trick. I hope that part wasn't too confusing, though! I think I made it pretty entertaining, and when crunch time really came I'm glad I didn't cut it out!!

And honestly it wasn't confusing at all ;) (I mean the trick is meant to be confusing and you didn't do an animation so it really doesn't matter that some moves are not shown... if anything it keeps the flow going...) And the flow does keep going! You did a great job there, all the more since the story seems to be pretty challenging to draw out in an understandable way... Yet you managed this without a hitch!

I love Shinichi’s face expressions every time the day resets! And the different interactions in each loop were great. The first time before it began to loop was quite normal (other than the fact Kaito apparantly attended the school) until Shinichi confronted Kaito and called him… an imposter?!?! I was so shocked out of my mind that I fainted three times and died. (Just kidding. I just laughed at the amogus joke.)
The first loop was short, but I liked this confrontation as well!! Shinichi was kinda mean, though. (“This isn’t about your feelings, Kuroba. You don’t belong here.”) Ouch. But also kinda cool.
The second loop definitely raised the most questions!! Kaito suddenly took Shinichi with him to talk, which was very different from the previous two times since this time he initiated the change. And Shinichi somehow stopped the resets from happening. Was Kaito looping as well, like Shinichi? Was he the real Kaito, or was he just part of that world? Those were some of the questions going through my mind. And then the flickering between Ran and Aoko was confusing. (After I was finished though, I read through the comments and found out it was because Kaito’s subconsciousness simultaneously did and didn’t want her to be part of this peaceful world, and I really liked that! You put a lot of thought into this work.)
The third loop was my favourite loop! The card trick scene was so good!! I loved it. It was cool and fun! Shinichi’s face expression in one of the panels (the one that say’s “But look!”) was so funny. Shinichi’s train of thoughts leading to the memory/flashback of the night was super smooth. It revealed what had happened that caused Shinichi to be stuck in this world. The deduction right after that was smart. Then Kaito confronted Shinichi!! Shinichi’s explanation of his deductions to Kaito and Kaito’s reaction was so good. I really liked this scene because it was deep and emotional. I never thought about how Shinichi has so many people on his side, while Kaito barely has anyone. The fear that his lies would some day catch up to him only makes sense, since that’s what happens when you have a secret identity.
That panel when they finally woke up and were falling from the sky and glass was all around them was so pretty!! AND THEY WERE HUGGING OH MY GOSHHH. I love the action when they finally woke up as well! Kaito’s “R-18??? No way!” was super funny!! And Shinichi’s words in the end about moving forward and being honest was just so true!! It’s a great lesson :)

  I'm really glad you had such different reactions to all the loops. Part of me was really worried that time loop stories would get too repetitive, so I tried to change it up so the reader wouldn't lose interest... it seems like it worked, at least for you!
  I said this in another comment, but I really debated about putting the card trick in. It felt really self-indulgent and I was worried that it wouldn't belong in there but what I've found is that most Kaito fans really enjoy magic, actually, so honestly there's not a better target audience for putting a card trick in a doujin LOL

Okay Soh you know many of my thoughts on this already.
But. The ending. “It was a beautiful dream” and then we find out Shinichi hasn’t spoken to Ran in a year??? Emotional damageeee
The art is beautiful and the imagery is incredible and the time loop is confusing at first (as it should be) but it clears up later. We start to understand what’s going on along with Shinichi, and I love that so much.
The pacing is great and I love the concept behind it, and Pandora’s fake immortality was a stroke of genius.
This reads so well. I love it so much and I feel so inspired to create things after reading it. I love it so much. I don’t have any more words, but I guess I’ve already said a lot to you about this.
It’s so great, you’re so talented and you really didn’t have to flex this hard aghshshs leave something for the rest of us dude

  I'm really glad you enjoyed the art and imagery and I LOVE it when I get comments on pacing because it's a part of storytelling that I really think is super integral to my enjoyment of it! And Pandora's fake immortality... what can I say except Pathologic brainrot's got me down bad? It almost felt cliche to me, but I guess if we're all coming from different places people will naturally have a different response haha

  I'm glad you stuck around long enough for things to make sense! I think a problem with these time loop fics is that they often either are repetitive or confusing, and I chose to lean towards "confusing"... glad it panned out!!
