Chapter Text

In this chapter:

Tasha Zapata

Bethany Mayfair

Mayfair send her wife on an errand when Tasha Zapata arrived at her front door asking for a private audience. She offered beer or tequila, which she recalls
as the younger woman's 'poison' and is very surprised when she opts for iced tea instead. She's in for another, more substantive surprise: "I don't know what
to do, Assistant Director. I...Reade and I are pregnant."

"THAT explains the no beer or liquor," Mayfair nods. "How long has this been a...thing ...a relationship?"

"Since our first day. His nd mine. We...just KNEW. And we couldn't involve YOU, Ma'am: put your career at risk."

"The team knows?"

"Yes. And Brianna, Stuart...Nas possibly..."

"Tasha", Mayfair moans, holding her forehead. "You can trust your team but Nas is NSA and..."

"And very by the book," Tasha finished. "We know. In her favor, she hasn't reported us yet-so there's that."

Mayfair stares dolefully at hr former subordinate. "Why come to me, Tasha? I.m no longer part of the Bureau."

Her gaze steady, Zapata replies "ADVICE. We're in love and I won't give him up. We can be together if I lateral-move to CIA, only...if I do
that I'm afraid that I'll lose myself. I'd like your advice on whether it's worth it since you left the Bureau rather than give up the woman you
love."

"I DID," Mayfair verifies. "And I would do it again, but that was the right decision for ME. I'm not pregnant-you ARE. I'll say this...you may never
find another love like the one that I see shining in your eyes."

Before she can continue a Barbra Streisand classic pipes through the homes excellent hidden speaker system: Mayfair says "LISTEN...this song says it all:"

Life is a moment in space-When the dream is gone: It's a lonelier place
I kiss the morning goodbye-But down inside, you know we never know why
The road is narrow and long, When eyes meet eyes-And the feeling is strong
I turn away from the wall, I stumble and fall; But I give you it all

I am a woman in love...And I'd do anything
To get you into my world-And hold you within
It's a right I defend; Over and over again
What do I do....

With you eternally mine-In love there is no measure of time...We planned it all at the start
But you and I live in each other's heart-We may be oceans away; You'll feel my love
I hear what you say-No truth is ever a lie...I stumble and fall
But I give you it all

repeat chorus

"That's my favorite verse: 'I turn away from the wall, I stumble and fall; But I give you it all'...because it and it and the chorus: I'll do anything' perfectly
encapsulates how I feel for my wife-and how you feel for Reade, I suspect."

'

"Yes," Tasha says.

I am a woman in love...And I'd do anything
To get you into my world-And hold you within
It's a right I defend; Over and over again
What do I do....

I am a woman in love...And I'd do anything
To get you into my world-And hold you within
It's a right I defend; Over and over again
What do I do....

When the song ends, the last first reverberates in Zapata's brain: 'What do I do?'...and in that instant, SHE KNOWS...she knows what to do. She stands and hugs
her host, whispering "Thank you.

Mayfair whispers back: "Get him into your world, Tasha-hold him within-promise me."

"I promise."

Chapter Text

Zapata spent hours searching for Reade; she suddenly remembered that his personal BMW has a 'low-jack' system...a quick call to Patterson and he had his location:
a sidewalk cafe in lower Manhatten. He's at a table with a man and woman who appear a couple; it seems that he's alone...she started to approach them, then thought
better of it and retreated across the street...you fucking coward she fumed inwardly, then strode across the asphalt, her booted heels clacking. The trio
didn't notice her stop in front of them; on a sudden impulse, she bursts into an off-key version of one of Mariah Carey's biggest hits:

I didn't mean it when I said I didn't love you so....I should've held on tight, I never should've let you go...I didn't know nothing, I was stupid, I was foolish...
I was lying to myself....I couldn't have fathomed I would ever be without your love; Never imagined I'd be sitting here beside myself
Guess I didn't know you, guess I didn't know me...But I thought I knew everything I never felt

"MISS!" A smartly-dressed, grey-haired man called from outside the front door. "You have to LEAVE-you're disturbing our guests!"

As she begins the second verse of We Belong Together© she extracts her federal id and flashes it at the yelling clown:

The feeling that I'm feeling now that I don't hear your voice...Or have your touch and kiss your lips 'cause I don't have a choice: Oh, what I wouldn't give to have you
lying by my side...Right here, 'cause, baby (We belong together)...

Reade stood and said "GO HOME, Zapata-you're embarrassing yourself and your singing es terible " (terrible).

"Come with me," she pleads. "PLEASE: we need to talk...I fucked up: terribly, maybe unforgivably...the fact is I love you with everything in me...I can't hide it any longer-
I DON'T WANT TO HIDE IT."

"Ed-you okay?" Reade's male companion asked.

"Yeah; thanks. Tasha-"

The female half of the couple says "Go to her, Eddie. LOOK AT HER: she's standing in the street singing-albeit HORRIBLY, and any fool can see that SHE LOVES
YOU-and I know you well enough to know that that look on your face? You feel the same. GO HER, EDDIE."

A woman at the next table says 'GO TO HER!"

Soon a majority of the patrons in the eatery are chanting "Go to her! Go to her! Go to her!-"

Tasha joins them: "Go to her!"

Cheering and clapping erupts when Reade swings his leg over the short cast-iron balcony fence, steps carefully through the flower bed in front, and strides grudgingly
