quarter hour from home

Summary:

Jiang Cheng isn't stupid. He knows when and where to cross certain lines, what rules he can or could bend, and ones he shouldn’t break.

Now, if only that applied to his brother. His A-niang should've verbally beat this behaviour out of him sooner.

If theres any person Jiang Cheng hated more than ever in that particular moment, his annoyance of a brother, Wei Ying, takes the cake.

Whether he was trying to pay attention to that Old man Qiren (and his mind-numbingly boring lectures), or trying to eat his bland lunch peacefully, his brother always found a way to spice things up. Not necessarily in a good way, mind you.

If Jiang Cheng earned a dollar for every rule his brother broke, he'd be swimming in cash, and have no need for a job once he graduated. (If he graduated at all.)

Currently, Jiang Cheng was waiting by the school gates with his sister. Their elder sister. Why? Well, because Wei Ying decided to be an absolute dumbass and pester one of the top students (named, 'The Twin Jades of GusuLan', appropriately,) and got himself punished for bringing and drinking alcohol in class.

Out of all the stunts he has pulled this year, this one definitely takes first place for literal stupidity. Not counting the times he's spiked the water fountains with peppers, wrote in bathroom stalls with a sickeningly bright pink highlighter, or 'accidentally' setting one of the workbenches on fire during chemistry ("-in the name of science," or whatever dumb thing he quoted. Ugh).

But right now, Jiang Cheng needed  answers . Not excuses, not a redirection or shifting of blame. He wants answers, and he wants them now.

"A-Xian!" Yanli calls to a figure approaching from the library, not in any sort of anger or discontent. The figure laughs boisterously and Jiang Cheng registers him calling out his jiejie's name.

"Wei Wuxian," He growled out once the perpetrator was within ass kicking distance. "Explain what the fuck were you thinking when you pulled that stunt today! You could've gotten suspended for that!"

Wei Ying laughs nervously, before turning away from the two. "You see, it was Huaisang's idea, and-"

Jiang Cheng glares at his brother at the shifting of blame, making Wei Ying pause briefly to meet his brother's angered eyes.

"-it kind of stemmed from there?" The troublemaker peeped.

Yanli sighs, before addressing her brother, "A-Xian, all the buses have already left for Yunmeng. We need to walk since A-die and A-niang can't pick us up."

Wei Ying whines and pouts, "Why can't your boyfriend just take us home? Or just take you home, since I'd much rather shijie's feet be used for more important things than walking her brothers home." Yanli's cheeks flushed slightly at the mention of Jin Zixuan.

"Well, maybe if you didn't bring alcohol into school, we wouldn't have to walk!" Jiang Cheng had sounded beyond pissed, allowing some bottled up annoyance to soak into his speech.

"And also, full offence , but I don't buy that Huaisang of all people would have the bright idea of bringing alcohol into a lecture. And I don't think he repeated a year to break more rules anyways." He jabbed at his elder brother, who feigned pain in retaliation. How delightful.

Unfortunately, trying to lecture Wei Ying is like trying to absorb water through a completely soaked sponge. Inefficient and prone to overflow. Words coming from literally anyone except that second jade bounce right off of him.

Whatever higher being or deity is up there right now is probably rolling their heads because of his brother. Honestly, the fact that stoic-faced stone wall managed to put up with him baffled Jiang Cheng to no end.

He silently cursed as the sun hid behind some clouds. Not just some clouds, but dark grey ones. Rolling layers and sheets of darkness had collected over the sky without him noticing.

"Ah, it looks like rain. Shijie, did you bring an umbrella?" Wei Ying squinted at the retreating sunlight.

Yanli shook her head, "Unfortunately, A-Xian, I hadn't prepared an umbrella for today."

Jiang Cheng cursed. The gods truly hated him today. Either that, or enjoyed the bouts of chaos Wei Ying had continued to engage in.

"Let's just try get back home fast, then." Jiang Yanli suggested, walking at a brisk pace towards the back gate of the school. Wei Ying followed at a similar pace. Jiang Cheng sighed, hoping that the distant rumble of thunder would stay away for, perhaps, another ten minutes.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me .” Jiang Cheng groaned as a heavy rain drowning out his complaints, making him almost inaudible. Jiang Yanli sighed, watching the curtain of rain fall around them.

“Well, it’s a good thing this roofed bus stop was conveniently placed here, right ChengCheng?” Wei Ying leaned onto the attached bench.

Jiang Cheng fumed, “Who the fuck is ‘ChengCheng’? We wouldn’t have had to get stuck here it you hadn’t gotten in trouble!”

“Yes, but you and shijie could have left while I was getting my punishment.” Wei Ying nudged Jiang Cheng, who subsequently kicked at Wei Ying’s shin.

“I’ll break your legs if you do this again.” Jiang Cheng threatened.

“Getting in trouble or getting caught?” Wei Ying grinned with feigned innocence.

“They mean the same thing, dumbass.” Jiang Cheng lightly shoved Wei Ying, trying to get his point across.

“A-Xian, how would you propose we get home now?” Yanli shuffled over to her squabbling siblings.

“Hm? In this weather? We should probably wait it out. Buuuuuut ...” Wei Ying dragged out the last word. Oh no. He knew that grin.

Jiang Cheng braced himself for whatever stupid thing that was about to come out of his brother’s mouth.

“How about I race you there, ChengCheng?” A competitive smile graced Wei Yong’s face.

“Are you fucking stupid? A-niang will be pissed if you get home completely soaked! Jiejie, don’t listen to Wuxian-“

“Catch me if you can~!” Wei Ying sung as he broke into a sprint, water hailing down on his form as he ran off into a sheet of white.

“You- Get back here! Where do you think you’re going?” Jiang Cheng took off after his brother, his jiejie had wrapped a jacked on her head as a temporary umbrella, and took off with them.

Oh, Jiang Cheng swears on his single fucking life that Wei Ying would get a trip to the fucking ER.

Meanwhile, Jiang Fengmian sits at a coffee shop, sipping a rich latte as rain pummeled the streets outside.

I can’t help but feel I’m forgetting something, Fengmian blinks, shrugging off the thought.

Ah, what was that old saying? ‘If you don’t remember something, it’s probably not that important.’ Yeah. That’s the one.

He took another sip of his latte, staring out the window of the coffee shop.

“Perhaps the kids would like to visit the Yunmeng Supermarket tomorrow… hm, yes, they would like that.” Fengmian continues to watch the hailing rainstorm outside. Not once, did he remember to check the time.

I may have miscalculated the weather today, he thought. Hopefully his children brought an umbrella to school today. Hopefully.

Seven (7) missed calls on a silent phone later, and a raging Yu Ziyuan's anger-induced rant later, Wei Ying sits in his room, tucked under his bed. Of course he was grounded. What was he thinking?
