Small Doses

Summary:

Sucrose wondered why Noelle was always so bright to her.

Work Text:

When Sucrose first met Noelle, they were both first-year middle schoolers and Sucrose was being her usual self, shy and not wanting to mingle but their homeroom teacher decided to pair them up as partners during homeroom hour. When Noelle greeted Sucrose, the minty green-haired young girl wondered if taking the grey-haired girl’s hand was okay. After a few moments passed, Noelle realized that Sucrose was too shy to take her hand and she dropped her hand, only smiling at Sucrose in response. Her smile is so blinding. Sucrose thought as she shyly turned away but Noelle saw a hint of a small smile, which made her happy. She’s smiling so that’s a good sign. Noelle just didn’t want Sucrose to hate her and seeing the way Sucrose was treating her now, the other girl realized that Sucrose doesn’t know how to treat other kids because she stuck to herself.

Noelle considered a smile from Sucrose, no matter how small, was a win.

When Sucrose had gotten home from school, she was greeted by her brother, Albedo. “Hey, little squirt, how was school?” He had just gotten home after a day of high school.

“Made a new friend, I think,” she responded, making Albedo playfully ruffle her hair. Sucrose’s ears flickered at the soft touch, showing her brother that she was happy.

“You should bring her over some time,” he advised her, and Sucrose’s ears flattened against her head, causing Albedo to frown. “You’re not strange, Su.” Albedo promised Sucrose, and the girl shook her head.

“I am rather odd,” she accepted it as fact already. She wasn’t like other people and she only leaves the house to go to school so that was already odd in itself.

“Maybe your new friend will want to invite you to places,” Albedo spoke to Sucrose and the girl shrugged her shoulders, not knowing what to say.

Once she had retired to her room for the night, Sucrose found herself thinking about Noelle. She has such a bright personality. I wouldn’t be able to handle that bright smile all day, every day. She thought as she kicked her legs about, feeling her cheeks flush.

The girl paused.

Why was she blushing?

Sucrose never had an answer to her question until she and Noelle were in their first year of high school and Noelle’s smiles were just as blinding as they were back in middle school.

Oh.

It had taken Sucrose to realize that she was in love with Noelle. I did say I can only take her in small doses. Her personality is so big and bright. Sucrose thought, wondering if it was worth it to tell Noelle about her feelings. She didn’t want to bother the young woman, after all. She would probably find me strange for confessing to her. Sucrose thought, weighing her options.

Sucrose knew that if she told Noelle about her feelings, then they wouldn’t be a secret but then there was the later embarrassment that the object of her affections knew about her feelings.

Sucrose wondered what to do and she turned to Albedo, calling him on her phone during lunch hour. “Just tell her, kiddo,” he told her.

“How?” Sucrose begged the man to give her a strategy.

“There’s no strategy in confessing, just do it, “ he said, wishing her luck.

When the call ended, Sucrose lightly glared at her phone. “That wasn’t helpful at all,” she frowned, turning back to see Noelle approaching. Just in time to watch me fail at confessing. She thought. Once Noelle was next to her, Sucrose stared at her, wondering how to tell Noelle that she loves her. She didn’t want to regret telling Noelle, and her heart nearly dropped when Noelle kissed her cheek.

“I know, Sucrose. You can tell me when you’re ready,” Noelle said with a soft smile on her face.

Huh?

She already knew about Sucrose’s feelings?

Sucrose thought that she kept them under wraps for so long.

“What I meant was that I know about your feelings because you’re open with me, even if you aren’t speaking to me. I can read you,” she told Sucrose and the young woman knew that was true. She allowed herself to be vulnerable around Noelle because she trusted that the young woman wouldn’t hurt her.

“I…I…” Sucrose didn’t know why she was trying to force herself to say the words, seeing that Noelle had just said that she would wait for Sucrose to tell her those three special words.

“Don’t worry, darling. I will wait a lifetime for you,” Noelle said, gently kissing Sucrose on the lips, making both girls blush as they were happy at the kiss.

Those three special words came on their wedding day. “I love you, Noelle.” Sucrose said with a bright smile on her face.

Noelle smiled as happy tears rolled down her cheeks. “I love you too.” She said as they shared their first kiss as a married couple.
