Chapter 1: The blue-eyed Slave
Chapter Text
Din came into the Jabbas hideout ready to collect his bounty. It was crowded and loud. He hated it. When he got to him he threw the bounty in front of Jabba.
The Hutt looked at it. "Good job. Stick around for tonight's festivities."
Din wanted to decline but knew it wasn't a good idea. So he stood and watched a Twi'lek girl perform. Nothing he hadn't seen before, she was pretty but not really his type. The evening went on like that multiple slaves trying their best to entertain Jabba, natural Hutt stuff.
Before the last person came out Jabba got even more excited than usual. Din wondered why but when he came out he knew why. It was a young man, probably about 20. His eyes were a piercing blue and he had soft-looking blonde hair. He stepped into the middle of the room where a twilek girl tied a black blindfold on him so he couldn't see anything.
Din looked confused until the man was handed two torches and people started shooting at him. The man evaded every blaster shot gracefully while spinning the torches. It looked like he was dancing.
Din couldn't look away. He moved as if he knew where the people would shoot as if he could see. It was weirdly beautiful and mesmerizing.
The man threw the torches in their respective holders and did a flip forwards pulling off the blindfold now only being a few meters away from the Mandalorian breathing heavily. There was this beautiful sadness running through him. But before he could look at him any longer the man was yanked away by the chain around his neck.
Jabba had pulled him towards himself. "Did you enjoy the show Mandalorian?" He pulled the man closer. "This one's my favorite, a real jetii."
The man tried to move away only to be yanked closer. He looked at the Mandalorian almost as if he was begging him to help him.
Din stepped closer to the Hutt. "What about my payment?"
"15,000." Jabba let the Jedi go who immediately moved away.
"I want the 50,000. I don't bargain you should know that."
"Hmm, how about I'll let you pick a slave on top of the 15,000, that's more than fair."
"I have no use for slaves, Jabba."
"Then sell it. Slaves go well here, you know that especially a pretty Twi'lek woman. You can get your pick."
"Any slave?"
"Yes," Jabba called all his slaves out and made them line up except for the man.
Din looked at them, all pretty generic and would bring him a pretty penny. But the man, if he was really a Jetii he would make him a lot more. "I want him." He pointed at the blue-eyed man.
The man looked at him surprised, his eyes full of emotions but nothing Din could pinpoint.
"Not him." Jabba yanked the man closer with the chain.
"A deal is a deal Jabba. You said any slave. Are you not a man of your word?" Din knew he could get what he wanted.
The Hutt got angry because he knew he had to give the bounty hunter what he wanted. "You don't want him. He's only good for circus tricks and a handful. He will escape."
"I can handle it. My payment, please." Din walked past the other slaves up to Jabba.
"You're not making friends." Jabba handed him the chains and the credits.
Din pulled the man closer holding his blaster to the side of his head to keep him from trying shit. "I'm not here to make friends. I'm here to make money." He left the hideout and kept walking to his ship all the while having his new slave stare at him.
When he got to the ship he tied the man up and threw a blanket over him, since he was barely dressed. "Don't try any funny business. We're only driving for 3 days then I'll resell you. I should get some good money for you."
The man didn't answer but looked around as if analyzing his surroundings before looking at Din. "Who are you gonna sell me to?"
"The highest bidder."
"There's no way I can convince you to let me go right?"
"Look it's nothing personal but I'm not a Saint that frees slaves."
"I understand." The man looked at his tied-up hands.
Din sighed and sat down on his chair starting the ship. They flew in quiet for a while until the slave spoke up again.
"I can be helpful, you know. I'm a good flyer and I can do housework or protect your ship-"
"I don't have a need for you. I like to travel alone and in silence."
"Please, you can beat me and hit and use me just don't sell me."
"Why do you want to stay here so badly?" Din turned around confused by the other's behavior.
"I'd rather stay in one place than keep changing hands. It's-" He paused for a second. "And you have a ship and seem nice. I don't want to end up being confined to one place again."
"How would you even know if I was nice?"
"Years of experience you learn how to read people."
"I won't keep you. So be quiet now, jetii."
"I'm not a Jedi. I've never been formally trained."
"But you can do that space magic stuff right?"
"You mean the force, yes."
"Okay, then you'll still get me a lot of credits. Now be quiet."
The man rolled his eyes. And leaned against the wall trying to get some sleep.
Din kept flying. Why should he care about some random guy? He was just gonna sell him and get his money. But when he was performing Din almost felt his pain, how alone he was. Eventually, he went to sleep.
When Din woke up the slave was already awake and looking at him. He went and got something to drink and a Ration bar, setting it down in front of him before getting back to flying.
"Aren't you gonna eat?"
"Mandalorian, we don't take off our helmet in front of other living sentient beings. Now eat and be quiet."
The man ate and there was silence for a while.
"I need to use the bathroom."
Din sighed and got up untying him and leading him to the restroom holding the chain while turning around. When he was done Din went to tie him up again.
"Could you tie me up in front of a window please?"
"Why?"
"I haven't seen the stars in ages. I promise I won't give you any trouble."
"Okay." Din tied him to the chair next to him.
"They're beautiful don't you think?"
"I don't know. They just don't really stand out to me."
"I guess when you see them more often they lose their flare." The man turned to Din. "You know I really thought you would be my ticket out of this life."
"Why?"
"You seemed like the type. You know morally grey, does what he needs to survive but has a good heart. Did I get you wrong?" Blue eyes piercing through him.
Din didn't answer.
"Well, maybe I get sold to some okay people. Maybe they have a farm. I miss our old farm."
He wanted to answer when he noticed a ship following him. It was Solo's ship. Shit. Quickly he started calculating a jump to hyperspace. "Strap in." He made the jump getting rid of the pursuer. What did he want?
"Well, looks like we're early." He landed.
"What? I thought we would need 3 days."
"Yeah but after that jump time got cut short. Let's get you out of here." Din took him on the chain and went outside the ship ignoring the other's demeanor.
He went to the market to find a slave trader. "I would like to sell this slave."
The trader walked over to inspect the slave. "Hmm, he's pretty. Good physique. Maybe 30.000?"
"He's a Jedi."
The trader immediately hushed him. "Don't be so loud about it. Wrong people could hear that. Can you prove it?"
"Yeah, do your thing." He nudged the man.
The slave took a deep breath and made some of the trader's merchandise float.
"Well, still 30.000. I don't have any more at the moment. I can trade you a nice Twi'lek girl for him." The trader grinned. "I could use him around here."
"30.000 isn't enough and I have no use for slaves. Who are the wrong people? They are bound to pay a good price for him."
"The empire. But don't, it would be a death sentence. They kill every Jedi they come across." The trader looked saddened at the slave who looked like all the color drained from his face.
"Thank you. I'll find someone who'll pay a good price." Din turned around heading to his ship. "Come on let's go." He nudged the slave forwards until the man stopped and looked up at the expressionless helmet.
"Please, I'll do anything. I'll cut out my tongue and won't bother you anymore but just don't-"
"I haven't decided on anything yet. Calm down. I'll need to think about it." Din led the man back to his ship and tied him up in front of the window before taking off again.
"I'm sorry."
"What?" Din turned around to see the man looking down at his hands.
"For being such a handful. I just- I could be helpful-"
"Stop it. I told you, I have no use for you."
"But-"
"No, now get some sleep."
They flew for hours in silence and Din felt a bit bad. That was until the man spoke up again.
"What is your name?" Blue eye's staring at him piercing his soul.
"Why does it matter?"
"It doesn't just felt like asking, I wanted to know what to address you as." He shrugged. "I could also call you master if you want to."
"Din."
"Din? I like that it sounds nice like it was picked with care and love."
"Do you have a name?"
"I had but it's not like it matters anymore." He smiled politely but Din could see the hurt behind it. "You know I wanted to be a pilot but then I got into the trade." He chuckled. "Sorry, I just talk a lot in awkward situations like this."
Surprisingly Din didn't tell him to be quiet but furthered their conversation even if he knew it was a bad idea the more he knew the more personal this whole thing would get. "How old were you?"
"12. I changed hands a lot but was mostly used for labor and babysitting. Well, that was until I turned 16. I- Let's just say sometimes people like to use their slaves for entertainment. Got to Jabba's place a few months ago."
"I'm sorry, that's-" He got interrupted when he noticed a ship on his radar. "Solo again? What does he want?"
Din's question got answered as he received a message.
"We want the kid." The man sounded calm. "We'll pay you."
Din prepared to jump to light speed not trusting the other. So he did. There was no way that man would pay him after boarding. 'Do you have any ties to Solo?"
"The smuggler?"
"Yeah."
"No, I mean I've seen him around at Jabba's but it's not like I was allowed to talk to other people. Why?"
Din looked at him for a bit wondering if he should tell him. "They've been tailing us. Probably want to bring you back to Jabba."
"Will you give me over again?"
"No."
"Good."
They went quiet again until the man spoke up again. "You know I am good at mechanics and electronics, worked for someone in that field before so-"
"Please stop talking. I don't like knowing too much about work-related stuff it makes the job complicated.'
"Okay, I'm sorry." After that, the slave didn't say anything again. Almost as if he had given up.
The next day Din had made up his mind. He found a buyer and as nice as the slave seemed he had no use for him and needed the money. So he kept flying to the meeting point. When his passenger woke up he broke the news to him.
"Look I found a buyer for you. We'll be arriving at the meeting point shortly." He somehow wanted to apologize but kept quiet.
"Okay." The man just looked out the window. He knew there was no point in changing his mind, even if he ended up at some rich asshole's place he would manage. He always does. It was just another disappointment. The two didn't talk the rest of the way until they arrived at the drop-off location.
Din went out with him seeing the other nervously pick at the skin around his nails. The slave's face dropped when he saw stormtroopers come out. He desperately grabbed onto the other's arm. "Please, Din. Not this please anything but this."
"I'm sorry."
The slave felt a storm trooper grab the chain around his neck ready to pull him away. He fought against it seeing the Mandalorian talk with the other storm trooper. He was panicking unable to breathe.
"My name is Luke Skywalker!" He screamed as loud as he could to make the other see him, see him as more than just a commodity. "I just turned 20 years old 2 weeks ago, 2 days after empire day!" He felt tears fall down his cheek as he pleaded with the other. "I grew up on Tatooine with my aunt and uncle, they- their names were Beru and Owen Lars. We- we were moisture Farmers before they got killed. Please I am begging you, I haven't lived yet." He felt the chain slowly choking him out. "I was stuck in a dungeon stuck in other people's houses for years! I haven't lived yet, I don't want to die. Nobody has loved me yet. Please Din! I am someone's child, someone's nephew-"
Din was staring at him throughout the whole ordeal but the other couldn't see what he was thinking through the helmet.
"I am a person! Please-" He was gasping for air. "I am not finished yet!" Tears rolled down his face as he fell to the floor. He could live with anything, the abuse, being overworked. He just wanted to live.
"Ah, kriff!" Din drew his blaster shooting the stormtroopers.
Chapter 2: Freedom and Familiar Faces
Chapter Text
There was a reason Din normally never talked to his bounties or work acquaintances, having distance made the job easier. But he couldn't just leave him, not after all that. So he went up to the other who was still kneeling on the ground trying to catch his breath. He could've pulled him up on the chain but he just offered him his hand.
Luke looked up at him only now realizing the other had changed his mind. He hesitated for a second until he grabbed his hand desperate to get out of here.
"I'll set you down on a nearby planet, jetii."
Luke couldn't really say anything scared to upset him or ruin this. He felt relieved and wanted to hope that this time he would finally get away. He followed the other back to the ship still holding onto his hand.
When they got back on the ship Luke just kept looking at him still not believing it. Din ignored the stares and took off. After getting a few miles away he got the key to unlock the chain around his neck. He stood in front of him and slowly unlocked it.
When the big collar dropped off the Jedi's neck he grabbed it. The feeling of nothing around it was so unfamiliar to him. He took a deep breath, this was really happening he was gonna be free. Without hesitation, he hugged the other probably crossing multiple boundaries. "Thank you! Thank you so much!"
Din didn't like the physical contact but seeing the dark bruises around the other's neck made him feel bad and let him hug him. 'Let's find a planet to drop you off."
Luke stepped back nodding all excitedly. He moved to the window this time without any chains holding him back. The stars looked even more beautiful than before. After a while, he fell asleep.
Din put the blanket on him again and looked for some of his clothes he could give the other so he didn't look like a slave runaway. He found an old turtleneck and some pants. He put the clothes down before him. With a sigh, he sat back down and continued flying. He had made a big mistake getting on the wrong side of the empire and for what some slave? Well actually for Luke he knew his name now, he knew his uncle and aunt's name, and honestly, them dying resonated a bit too close to home for him.
The next day he woke up his passenger. "Hey Jetii, change into those clothes before we land."
Luke looked around confused. But after years of being used to it, he just followed the orders immediately before realizing that Din had given him normal clothes to put on, no slutty outfit or anything as he'd been used to. He also remembered yesterday's events. When he was done he came back out of the bathroom. "Thank you, Din. I owe you my life if there is any way I can repay you, anything just say so."
"No need." Din went to land on the planet. "Okay, we're here. You'll need something to get started.' He gave him a few credits, enough to last him two months
"I can't accept this. You were already kind enough and lost out on money because of me. I can manage."
'Look the world outside of the slave trade is though too. You'll need a bit to get you started believe me."
Luke wanted to argue but thought it would be more impolite to not accept. "Thank you."
"Don't mention it. Well, time to go out. I need some stuff from the market so I'll leave too."
Luke smiled at him widely probably the first time he had ever really smiled in what felt like forever. He was so excited to go outside.
Din felt his heart flutter a bit feeling warm seeing him so happy. When they got out he watched him run out taking in the air.
The Jedi was spreading his arms taking a few good deep breaths in and out before turning around to the other. He felt like a child again running free on the farm with biggs. But not really knowing where to go next he followed Din. Honestly, the abundance of choices overwhelmed him. So he stayed close to the other.
He stepped at a market stall to look at the wares and lost the other. Without a familiar face, he started to panic. He felt like everyone was staring at him. His breath quickened as he desperately looked around trying to find him again. He turned around and ran into someone. "I'm sorry!" He put his arms up to shelter his face. "I'm sorry."
The guy he ran into just looked at him annoyed and kept walking. Luke was still standing there holding his hands up until he slowly calmed down lowering them. He hurried to try and find the ship again but failed. His anxiety only got worse when he made eye contact with Han Solo.
"Hey, kid!" The smuggler walked over to him.
But Luke immediately turned around and ran. He was not going back. Behind him, he could hear the other yelling while he focused on finding Din. Luckily after a while, he saw him strolling over the market and ran up to him hiding behind him.
"Luke?"
"Din, I need help please-"
The Mandalorian was just about to ask what was going on when he saw Han sprinting their way. He grabbed Luke without thinking and pulled him to his ship where Han stopped them.
"Please, I don't want to go back there." He hid behind Din. "Please don't make me."
"Back off Solo."
'You back off Mando." He frowned at him before turning towards the kid. "I am not here for Jabba. Some guy called Ben hired me to get you and make sure you're okay."
"Ben?'
"Ben Kenobi. He said he was a family friend when you were younger."
Luke stepped forward past Din. "I- how do I know you're not lying to me?"
"I'll bring you to him."
He wasn't dumb. The Jedi just got his freedom and he was not about to lose it. "No."
"What?"
"I said no." He couldn't hide his excitement at being able to deny him. "Why would I follow you to an undisclosed location like that?"
Han raised an eyebrow at him. "Fair point, kid. Honestly, kind of banked on you wanting to come with me." He turned to Din. "Ben said to pay you 100000 credits for him. That is double what you were gonna get from Jabba. It's a fair deal and you have him off your hands."
"I don't own him."
"You sold him already?'
"I freed him."
Han hit his face and groaned. "Really?! Quiet brooding asshole Mandolorian decides the perfect time to turn a new leaf is now just to fuck me over?"
They stood there for a few seconds No one really having more to say or do. They were at a standstill. Until they were joined by a cloaked figure. "Ah, there you are!" The man took off his hood to reveal himself as Ben Kenobi.
Luke just stared at him not really knowing what to say. He felt a mix of emotions overcome him until only anger prevailed. He marched up to him. "I thought you were dead! You-" He hit him against the chest. "You could've saved me, got me out and now you show up?! You were my friend!"
"I'm sorry, I tried to locate you but you were too hard to trace. Well, that was until I heard of a special slave at Jabba's Palace. I wanted to get you, I really did but someone got there before me." Ben felt awful, horrible for failing him. "Please forgive me."
Luke was livid but even the chance of him telling the truth of someone looking for him was enough to make him back off and stop hitting him. "I don't care. I don't need you anymore. I got out, no thanks to you."
"I know but you'll need my help after the stunt you and your buddy pulled with the stormtroopers."
'How-"
"Look let's talk about this over a bite to eat. I'll invite all three of you." Ben's gaze fell on the mandolorian.
Han immediately agreed under the condition his best friend could join. But Din hesitated. "Okay." He only agreed to make sure the other wouldn't get hurt. This could still be a trap set by Jabba and he couldn't have him get captured again after all the trouble he went through to free him, not to forget the money he lost out on.
So they went to a nearby diner, Luke never leaving Din's side. He trusted him most out of the others. When they arrived they were joined by a Wookie who he assumed was Solo's best friend.
He was overwhelmed with all the choices and swallowed hard feeling his anxiety dwell again. It was so long ago that he had a chance to choose what to eat. His heart was beating too fast for his body.
"You want a recommendation, kid?" Han nudged him having noticed his discomfort. He was lowkey about it too not drawing too much attention to it.
Luke looked up at him thankful and gave him a smile. "Please."
The other suggested something to him and they ordered. When the food arrived Luke stared down at it. Should he wait? He was used to waiting until he got explicit permission to eat so he looked around to see the others eating, well, minus Din because of the helmet. So he carefully and hesitantly ate a bite, after not being reprimanded he ate more just now realizing how hungry he had been.
After a bit, Ben spoke up. "So, I have a proposition to make. I will make up for not getting to you sooner, providing you with a warm place and a new start in life."
"I think I'll be fine on my own thank you." Luke was still bitter and just took another bite of his food.
"Okay but let me at least get you to a safer planet. Let me at least do that for you."
"Fine.'
"Good." The older man then turned to the others. "I have a proposition for you too. I have a special task that could benefit from an extra pair of hands and you'll get rewarded handsomely."
"How much?" Han looked at him skeptically.
"Let's just say you are rescuing a princess."
He looked at the Wookie for a second before agreeing. Din on the other hand didn't quite know if he should agree. He was a bounty hunter, not some hero. "No."
"Okay, I respect your choice. Let me at least compensate you for keeping Luke safe." Ben went to offer him some credits but the other declined. It just seemed wrong to accept credits after freeing him. It felt too much like selling him.
So after eating they made their way to their ships and Din went to part ways with them. Luke grabbed his hand. "Before you leave and I probably never see you again." He took off a ring from his finger and put it in the Mandalorian's hand. "Thank you for all your help, for giving me my freedom back." He heard Han calling for him. "I will never forget you and what you did for me Din." He turned around and hurried to reconnect with the others. They arrived at Han's ship and he looked around amazed.
"Don't touch anything kid."
Luke ignored him and found two droids, one immediately introduced himself as C3PO and he smiled at him, introducing himself too. The second one was smaller and beeped at him. He kneeled down in front of him and used his thumb to clean off some of the dirt chuckling at the happy noises the droid made. When he had free time at Jabba's place he always spend time with the droids.
When they took off he found himself playing a holo board game with the Wookie. He vaguely remembered it from one of the places he stayed at, though he never played before only got bent over it. A shudder went through his body remembering it and he shook it off. After one round he got more into it and played some more with him until the Wookie who he then learned was named Chewie got called into the cockpit by Han.
He fumbled around with the sleeves of his shirt feeling sad that Din had left him. Maybe he had grown attached this quickly because he had been kind to him without expecting anything back. He leaned down on the table sighing, he was free but to be honest he didn't really know what to do with himself know. There were too many options he could go back to babysitting or train his powers. Having made up his mind he went searching for Ben.
"Oh Luke, do you need anything?'
"I want to join."
"What?"
"I want to join the rescue mission. I can help."
"No."
"I don't want any money or anything I just want to help.'
"No, that's too dangerous." Ben sat down with him. "We're talking about the empire here."
"I know." He looked him dead in the eyes. "Look I want to do something with life, something that matters. This is my decision and I will not argue about it. I'm good at evading shots and I can sneak us in or talk my way out."
"Evade shots?"
"Some circus trick Jabba made me do. Blindfold me and make me use the force to evade blaster shots. I actually got pretty good at it after a while."
"You can do that?"
"Yeah, I had a lot of time to practice it and honestly if your life depends on it you learn faster. Believe me, blasters hurt."
Ben looked at him for a while agreeing to him to come with him if he got to help him refine his abilities.
Later that night Luke couldn't really sleep so he went to the cockpit instead to talk with Han. "So, I've seen you around sometimes. Do you work for Jabba?"
"Sometimes he pays well. You haven't been there long have you?"
"A few months. But honestly, it was enough. He never let me talk to anyone else, well except for Boba Fett. I guess he really liked Fett."
"You talked to that guy? I feel sorry for you."
"He was actually really kind. I was given to him for the night but he did not touch me and just let me sleep.' Luke smiled to himself. "Guess Mandalorians have a track record of being kind to me."
"Sorry."
"Huh?"
"Didn't mean to pry.' Han felt bad to remind the other of that event and the events in his past. But Luke just smiled at him.
"It's okay. I like taking especially in an unfamiliar situation like this." He chuckled. "You know I could probably sneak us in really well some high-ranking generals booked me sometimes so I might be able to pull some strings."
During the next few days of driving, Ben gave him an old lightsaber which he said was his father's. He showed him how it worked but warned him how dangerous it was to just swing something like that around without knowing how.
Chapter 3: Saving the Princess and joining the Rebellion
Chapter Text
On the day of the mission to free the princess, Luke snuck them in dressed in his old clothes a bit sad to not wear the comfortable turtleneck Din gave him but business is business. Han put on a helmet and pretended to be his new owner or pimp. It felt weird. Chewie followed them as their bodyguard. Moradmin Bast welcomed them a bit surprised. "I didn't order you here. You shouldn't be here."
"Well looks like someone thought you might enjoy some company." Luke immediately went closer to him putting his hand on his chest charming him like he always used to.
"Okay then. It's not like anyone would turn down a gift like this and I just finished my shift."
Han was surprised and impressed by how fast he had the other around his finger and watched him leave into the man's room with him winking at him.
Luke felt the man grab his face and kiss him before getting pushed onto the bed roughly. He hated this, hated how he touched him but he just had to wait for the right time.
"I haven't seen you in a long time, slave. So I had to play with others but none were as fun as you." He let his hand run over his body to his waist. His grip was tight and hurt making the other squirm a bit.
He shuttered at the thought mostly because he knew exactly what the other was into and that it would hurt even more. He knew the plan was to just flick the key card out to Han and distract the general but he couldn't. He hated how he touched him how he made him call him all kinds of things, how he would choke him and make him struggle for air. Tears started to form in his eyes as the guy got ready to undress him. So he took a lamp beside the bed and hit it over his head knocking him out.
Quickly he undressed the man and gagged him and tied him to his own bed before changing into the man's uniform, luckily it wasn't too big. He made himself look a bit more presentable and went out.
"What the- kid that wasn't the plan." Han looked at him confused.
"Well, change of plan. Also, this is way easier for us. Now let's go." He started walking trying to avoid suspicion. Luckily for him all the generals and workers he had entertained over the year had let enough slip so he could talk himself out of any situation, knowing enough of how the empire operated.
After they got Princess Leia out they went to reconnect with Ben who got killed in front of them. So they quickly got back into the ship flying away. Luke was sad no matter how mad he had been the other was the first old friend he has seen in a while and if what he said was true he truly tried to get him out of there. Not wanting to stay in that uniform he quickly changed out of it and back into the clothes Din had given him feeling a lot better afterward.
Leia had sat down looking at him with some questions on her mind. So Luke sat down next to her smiling. "Are you okay?"
"What?"
"You were trapped there for I while, being held in one place never feels nice."
"I'm fine, the most important thing is that we get these droids to the rebellion."
Han chimed in. "And that I get my money."
"What a gentleman. You'll get it soon enough." She turned to Luke. "And what are you doing this for?"
"Oh, I don't want any money.' He put up his hands and chuckled. "Guess I want to explore my freedom and do something with my life."
"Freedom?"
Luke pulled down the turtleneck showing her his bruises. "Former slave." He shrugged.
"Oh, I'm sorry."
"It's fine."
The two kept talking for a bit until they arrived at the base. Luke looked around a bit, the lightsaber Ben gave him strapped to his waist when he ran into a familiar face. "Biggs?"
"Wormie!" His friend went up to him to hug him. "I haven't seen you in ages I thought you wanted to join us pilots. What have you been up to?"
"Long story." Luke looked up at him. "You got so buff."
"And you got taller, huh?"
He just smiled at him so glad to see his best friend again. It almost made him forget about all the trauma. He hugged him again leaning further against him.
A few days after Din had parted ways with the Jedi he got back to his normal life taking jobs here and there until a particular client caught his eyes. She was part of the rebel alliance and it piqued his interest mostly because he wondered if that Ben guy was there and tell him if Luke was able to settle in. To be honest he was worried. So he took the job. He was tasked with capturing an empirial general and so he did.
When he found the base after cryptic instructions he saw them readying up for a fight. After bringing in the bounty and collecting his money he went looking for Ben only to learn that he had died. Seeing no point in staying he got ready to leave until someone called his name.
"Din?"
He turned around to see the Jedi in a flight suit running over to him with a big smile on his face.
"What are you doing here?"
"I could ask the same question."
"Oh yeah, I decided to join the rebellion." Luke smiled at him. "So, did you decide to help out here, or what brought you here?"
"Oh no, I dropped off a bounty." Din looked at him he looked like a completely different person in that flight suit. "Didn't you plan on finding some nice place to settle down?"
"Yeah, but I got overwhelmed unsure what to do. So I decided to do the right thing and help out." He smiled at him. "I am glad to see you again."
Din didn't quite know what to say. He hadn't thought he would see him again but was sort of glad about it.
"So-" Luke dragged out the word. "Are you gonna stick out for a while? We could use some extra hands."
"I don't really get involved in stuff like this."
"Oh okay." He felt a bit disappointed as he wouldn't have minded spending some more time with him. "Well, you should probably still hang around and wait until we win to take off. You are in the middle of a battlefield after all."
"What if you don't win?"
"Not an option." He smiled before getting called away to his x-wing.
Din didn't quite know what to do but the other was right leaving now when the death star just arrived would draw fire to him. So he decided to stay and wait. The rebels who remained in the station were helping from below and he couldn't help but follow the battle. He was worried so many went down until there were barely any rebels left. Could he just sit here while they died, while Luke died just for the sake of not getting involved? For the sake of sticking to his ideals? Knowing he couldn't just let him die, he got into his ship taking off to help. His ship was a gunship after all.
When he got there it looked like Solo had the same idea as he was getting ready to shoot the three tie fighter tailing Luke. He joined the smuggler and they made quick work of the ships giving the Jedi the opportunity to shoot. After landing it they and the rest serving rebels took off away from it.
"Great shot, kid that was one in a million!" Han celebrated on the radio sequence.
As they got down all the rebels who stayed on the ground Luke jumped out of his X-wing celebrating with the rest of the rebels who had run over. "Luke!"
"Leia!" Luke looked at the princess and they embraced laughing before Han joined in. He hugged him
The Jedi was still high on adrenaline "I just knew you'd come back. I just knew it!"
"I wasn't gonna let you get all the credit and take all the reward!" Han laughed with him when Leia pulled him into a hug as well.
"I knew there was more to you than money." She pulled him close smiling.
When Luke saw Din step out of his ship he ran up to him. "Not really getting involved in this stuff my ass!" He hit him against the chest laughing. "Knew I pegged you right! Morally grey Mando with a big heart under there." He grinned at him.
Din wanted to disagree and say something when he was pulled into a hug and it knocked the air out of him for a second. But before he could react Leia came over to him. "You must be Din! Thank you for your help."
Han hit him on the back. "Turned soft, bounty hunter?"
"What about you, smuggler?"
"Touché."
Luke put his arms around both of them. "Okay, I think it's time to celebrate!"
"I think that Luke is right." Leia smiled widely.
"I should leave-" Din tried to interject but just got dragged with them.
They sat down in a small sitting area a bit away from the other rebels celebrating. Leia had gotten them some drinks. Luke sat next to Din. He kept glancing over at him from time to time.
They drink a bit except for Din because of the helmet. "You saved my life two times now!" The Jedi smiled at Din. "You've got to let me repay you somehow."
"Hey, what about me? I saved you too." Han pretended to be annoyed, Chewbacca seemingly agreeing.
"Oh, of course." Luke turned to Han. "Maybe I can help you with your ship? I'm quite handy."
"I'm joking kid."
"Right-" He chuckled a bit embarrassed before turning back to Din. "Oh, by the way, I totally forgot, I can give you your clothes back if you want to."
"You can keep them."
"Really? Thanks." He took another sip of his drink. "So, what have you been up to?"
"Bounties."
"Oh, yeah. Anything interesting happen?"
Din had felt uncomfortable but hearing the other talk to him so effortlessly and smiling at him made him relax and feel more at ease. So he talked a bit about his bounties Luke listening to him intently. It felt nice to have someone so interested in him.
As the evening went on Leia got up ready to go to sleep. "We will hold a royal award ceremony tomorrow morning to honor you four for your great service to the rebellion. So don't drink too much."
Din wanted to interject not wanting to be part of this but she had already left. Han leaned back. "Royal award huh? That sounds good."
"Yeah, I can't really believe all of this is real." Luke chuckled. "So much changed in the last few days."
They finished up their drinks and headed to bed. Luke shared a room with Han and Chewie while Din was in his ship to make sure no one saw his face and not knowing what to do about tomorrow.
After a while of lying awake in bed, the Jedi got up. He went to the bathroom tiredly looking at himself. No matter how happy he was at the moment and how safe he felt he couldn't shake the feeling of somehow ending up back there. His fingers trailed over the now a bit faded bruises around his neck. Feeling his emotions start to swell up he decided to go outside. On the way, he felt his breathing become harder. When he arrived on a balcony he gripped the railing tightly trying to stable himself, his heart beating too fast.
"Are you okay?" Din had seen him hurry out and got worried.
Luke shot around at the sudden noise, lightly hyperventilating and trying to catch his breath. "No-" He looked like shit full on panicking as tears formed in his eyes. "I thought I'd be. Why- I thought I would be okay, happy, having gotten out but I'm scared. What if this is just some cruel joke? Or I'll end up there again, have them touch me again- I don't want to go back!"
"Hey, you're not going back." Din tried to calm him down. "You're safe. No one will hurt you or touch you against your will." Seeing him like this stung. He wanted to help but didn't know how.
Luke looked at him multiple emotions going through him but nothing the other could pinpoint. "Promise?"
"I promise, as long as I am around, you're safe." Din knew he shouldn't make promises he might not be able to keep but he could try his best.
"Okay." The Jedi trusted him. Maybe it was foolish to trust a man this fast but he saved his life twice now and freed him from his literal chains. How could he not trust him? "Thank you." He reached out carefully taking his hand, scared of crossing boundaries. "You're a good person."
"I'm not a good person, Luke."
"To me you are." He put his hand on the side of his helmet finally haven been able to calm his breathing a bit again. "No matter what you did in the past I trust you, Din."
Chapter 4: Royal Awards and Fixing Ships
Chapter Text
The next day Din had managed to catch the princess before the ceremony to cut himself out of it. So when it came time for it he was in the crowd watching as well. He had wanted to leave first thing in the morning without any fuss but after his conversation with Luke last night he couldn't bring himself to leave without a word. So he watched the ceremony from the crowd. He saw the Jedi walk up together with Solo and the Wookie. Din noticed that he was wearing his clothes and a jacket he had borrowed from the smuggler. It looked good on him.
Leia tried her best to keep her serious face for the ceremony but when Luke smiled at her she couldn't help but smile back, especially when Han did as well. She had grown so fond of the two in such a short amount of time. Taking a minute she grabbed the medallion and after putting on on Chewie she adorned Han with it who just winked at her.
Din watched as they finished up. Even though he never cared much about the politics and who were the good guys and who the bad he couldn't help but feel that this was a win for the people. Seeing the Jedi with that award around his neck he felt a sting knowing he had almost handed him over to certain death. If he had made one different decision he would've been dead by now and the death star would still be functional. Normally he didn't have these attachments but that persistent soul had somehow gotten in under the wire, gotten him to care and it scared him. He had been so lost in his thoughts that he didn't notice him running up to him.
"Din! You're still here." He smiled at him widely. "I was worried you might have already left."
"Yeah, I thought staying for a bit longer wouldn't be a bad idea with all that debris out there."
"Oh, right. Well, I am glad you're still here."
"Yeah?"
"Of course!"
Before they could continue talking they got joined by Han who hit the Mandalorian on the back. "And where were you? Did you get stage fright, mando? Scared you might get red?"
"Han." Luke nudged him and chuckled. "Leave him alone."
"Anyways, so what are you gonna do now? The empire will probably make bounty hunting harder for you.' The smuggler looked at him.
"Well," Din thought for a moment. "I'm good at staying low. So, getting around some stormtroopers shouldn't be a problem."
"You know you could always keep helping out here."
He was surprised that it was Han who insisted on him staying and not Luke. "This isn't really the way. Mandalorians don't get involved in stuff like this. We don't pick sides."
"Then why did you?"
"What?"
"You stepped in just like me. You picked a side. Why?"
Luke intervened noticing that Din was uncomfortable and probably felt backed into a corner. "Look, it doesn't matter why he did it only that he did. Let's just be happy we won for now."
The Mandalorian was glad the other stopped the discussion because honestly, he didn't really know the answer to that question himself.
"So I guess you're getting back to bounties then?" Luke smiled feeling a bit sad about it but in the end, he understood Din. He had his own life and code he lived by. There was no way he could fault him for that.
"Soon, I'll leave when I know I won't run into the empire."
"Great! So you are staying a while longer?"
"I guess." Din didn't quite know what else to say. He grew a bit uncomfortable seeing Han eyeing him suspiciously. "I'm going to fix a few things on my ship, now. I've been meaning to do that."
"Can I come with?"
'Sure. But don't you think some people might want to talk to you after the ceremony?"
"They can wait."
"OK." Din left with the Jedi.
Leia walked up to Han who was now standing there alone. "Where are those two going?"
"To his ship." He paused for a second. "I'm worried about the kid."
"Why?"
"I don't trust the Mandalorian. I've seen him around a few times at Jabba's place he was never conflicted about handing a bounty over even if they were killed. So why would he free Luke?"
"I mean maybe the bounties he had were all kind of bad people." Leia thought for a moment. "I see your point. But if he really had some sinister intentions, why saw him again?"
"I don't know. Maybe I am worried for nothing and you're right. But I just don't want to see the kid get hurt."
'He won't."
Meanwhile Luke had followed Din on his ship. It felt different to be on it this time. He smiled to himself looking around. "So, is there anything I can help you with?"
"Are you good with hyperdrive motivators?"
"A bit, what's the problem?"
"Mine seems to have an issue. It must have gotten damaged or something."
"I'll take a look at it." Luke smiled hoping he could help. He took a few seconds looking at it before turning to the other elated. "I can fix it. It's just minor damage. Do you have some tools?"
"Yeah." Din put them down in front of him and started working on the other things. It was weirdly nice to have someone work on his ship with him. He had been so used to doing everything alone and he liked it but with him it was different. Maybe it was his easygoing personality or the light in his eyes despite everything that had happened to him or his smile. But no matter what it was it made Din gravitate towards him.
Luke was so glad to work on a ship again. He had missed it as the older he got the less he was used to help out with things like that. But he liked getting lost in his thoughts just tinkering with technology. It was all so intricate. "So, do you work for Jabba a lot? I hadn't really seen you before."
"I try to avoid clients like him. But he does pay well, normally." Din didn't mind talking to him. He felt at ease. "How are you, by the way? After yesterday-"
"I'm okay. I think I've just got some things to work through." Luke turned towards him smiling, a bit of oil and dirt on his cheek. "Thank you for caring. It really means a lot. All those things have shaped me but I can't let that keep me down."
The Mandalorian was impressed by his attitude about things and how he could still see the good in people, in him. It made him want to be better, to try harder. "So you said you lived on a farm?"
"Yes! I always hated it wanting to see the world. But now I would love to be back there again just for a while to lay in the sun and relax." The Jedi smiled to himself, glad to relive these happy memories. "Aunt Beru always made the best food and Owen let me ride his speeder with him."
'That sounds nice." Din felt himself smiling to himself remembering his own parents and how they used to tug him in and hold him when he was scared.
They sat there for a few minutes just silently understanding each other and understanding each other's pain before Din spoke up. "So, you're a war hero now. I'm sure they would be proud."
"I guess." Luke chuckled before finishing up the work. "I think it should work again."
Din got up and went over to him to look at it. "That was quick."
'Well, there wasn't really much damage."
Without thinking Din reached out to wipe off some oil on the other's cheek. When he realized he froze. "Sorry, I-"
"It's fine." Luke smiled at him softly. "I don't mind."
Din didn't quite know what to say. He was still a bit surprised at himself. But as the Jedi used his thumb to clean his helmet he felt more at ease, knowing that he hadn't weirded the other out. "Would you like to take it for a spin? See how well it works."
"Sure! Let me just tell Leia."
He watched him leave, questioning what had come over him that he would over to take him on a ride.
Chapter 5: Taking the ship for a Spin and Parting Ways
Chapter Text
"Ready to go?"
"Yes!" Luke sat down in his ship with him. He looked around excitedly. Getting to fly around in his ship with him not bound to anything made him unbelievably happy.
"Okay, Strap in." Din took a route close to the planet and under cover just to make sure they wouldn't run into any imperial ships. "Let's see how good your handy work is." He started the hyperdrive and it seemed to work. "Great."
Luke looked out the window at the sky. "Well, seems like I still got it."
"Thanks for helping."
"No problem." He smiled at him. "It's the least I can do after everything you've done for me."
"You don't need to do anything."
"I do. You saved me, Din." Luke leaned over to him.
"No, you don't. You do not owe me anything. It's alright." Din looked at him reassuring him. "Just enjoy your freedom and live your life that's all I want from you."
"I-" Luke didn't quite know what to say but he didn't need to as he got distracted seeing the ring he had given Din lying on the dashboard. He was glad the other had kept it and not sold it. To be fair it probably wouldn't have fetched him a good price anyways.
Din noticed him looking at it. "Oh, your ring. Why did you give it to me?"
"Well, it was the only thing I had left from my old life and it is important to me. So, I wanted to give it to you as a token of my gratitude and maybe a bit selfishly in hopes you wouldn't forget me."
"Forget you?"
"Yeah, I don't really know why. I just-" Luke shrugged. "It was stupid." He chuckled. "But I am glad you kept it. Thank you."
Din looked at it. He wasn't quite sure himself why he had kept it. It just felt right. "Well, maybe there's no need to know everything."
Luke smiled. "I guess your right. I like talking to you."
"Me too."
"I'm glad I got to get to know you, that you chose me and not some Twi'lek girl. I know it was mostly because I would have brought you more money. But I don't care how I met you I'm just happy I did."
Din felt touched. The other made him feel wanted and most importantly not alone. "Are you sure you want to stay with the rebellion? Because I could maybe do use some extra hands on my ship and you'd be safe."
"Yes, as much as I would like to leave with you, I can't. I feel like I need to do this. Knowing that I could make a difference and help people makes me want to help out even more." Despite knowing he couldn't go with him Luke was ecstatic that the Mandalorian suggested it.
"Alright, just stay safe okay?"
Luke smiled and leaned over to the other. "You care about me, don't you? The 'just business Mandalorian' cares about me, huh?" He teased him amused at the revelation.
"Stop." Din pulled back into the rebellion headquarters, landing his ship.
"I care about you too. So stay safe as well, please. I hope I'll get to see you again." The Jedi never moved his eyes away from him. He didn't want him to leave, he wanted to stay with him. But every time he thought about how, it always ended the same, with them splitting up. Din couldn't stay and he couldn't leave.
"Yeah." Din knew the same thing. He would have to leave eventually and to be honest, he could've already left but he didn't want to. "But I'll probably stay around until tomorrow. You know to make sure there aren't any imperial ships left out there."
"Okay." Luke smiled a bit sad to hear he was leaving so soon. "I should probably go and talk to Leia about the next plans but I will see you later."
Din watched him leave. He didn't even know why he cared so much, but offering someone they could stay with him on his ship meant a lot. The other had made him care for him and made him want to be around him.
Luke was strolling toward the princess. "Leia!" He waved at her. "So what's the next plan?"
"Oh hey, back from your little cruise with the Mandalorian?"
"Yes, everything works again." He smiled still a bit conflicted.
"Are you okay?" She gently put a hand on his shoulder.
Luke took a deep breath. "Din offered me to stay with him and help on his ship."
"Well, that's great." Leia was a bit sad thinking the other had accepted. "So why the long face?"
"What's the point of seeing the galaxy, if it is like this if people suffer? I want to leave with him, to not worry about anything. But I can't. This feels right, helping people feels right."
"So you're staying?"
"Yes, I had made up my mind a while ago. I want to help to make a difference."
"I am glad."
The rest of the day Din hadn't run into Luke again, that was until the sunset. He was sitting on the balcony thinking when the Jedi joined him. "Hey, couldn't sleep?"
"Yeah." Din turned around looking at the other. "What about you?"
"You got me." Luke chuckled. "Would you mind if I sat here with you?"
"No." Din shuffled over a bit making room for him. "Take a seat."
"Thanks." The Jedi sat down next to him looking up at the sky.
"Are you okay?"
"Yes, I'm just not used to the silence and calm. It makes it harder to sleep." Luke chuckled thinking back to everything. "Normally there was always some background noise, either some arguments or snoring or something. While this is nice it seems off."
"I see."
"What about you? What's keeping you up?"
You. Is what Din would say if he was honest but he wasn't. "Just hoping the empire won't have remembered my ship. I mean I was quick and they probably won't but it would be a hassle."
"I'm sure they don't remember. I mean they surely have bigger issues with the death star and everything." Luke smiled at him. "So, I guess you're really leaving tomorrow then?"
"Yes."
"I hope they don't cause you trouble. You're a good guy, Din. I won't forget what you did for me." He took the other's hand hoping it would be okay and surprisingly he didn't pull away.
Din gave him a holo com. "If you ever need help, contact me."
"Din-" Luke looked at the device. He hadn't really seen one in ages. His uncle and aunt gave him one before everything but it got taken from him when he got into the trade. Smiling he let his thumb run over the edges. "Thank you."
"Don't mention it."
"But-"
"I should try and get some sleep. You should probably rest too." The Mandalorian stood up not wanting to stick around scared he might change his mind and stay even longer. "Goodnight, Luke."
"Good night, Din."
He left sitting down in his ship.
The Jedi kept sitting there looking at the holo com. How could he ever properly thank the Mandalorian? He smiled to himself. His life had been complete shit but since the other showed up he was able to breathe again. He was no longer feeling numb.
Din sat down in his ship pulling off his helmet. He let his hand run through his hair. What was he supposed to do? The Jedi had awakened something in him. It made him want to shield him, to protect him from all the shit the universe would throw at him. He took a deep breath. Was giving him the holo com the right decision? Or was he just selfishly hoping to be able to stay in contact with him? He was scared of his feelings, scared of how much he cared so he started packing his stuff and made sure to be able to take off early.
The next morning he flew off without another word to anyone. It was better this way and he got work to do.
Luke saw him take off and just smiled as he felt a tuck at his heart. He just prayed the other would be okay and that maybe they would be able to see each other again. "Until next time, Mandalorian."
Chapter Text
Over the next few years, Luke hadn't seen Din. He wanted to contact him but always chickened out and then the whole rebellion got more and more. On top of that Din said to call him if he needed help. So he had always assumed it was only for emergencies, still, no matter where he went he kept it close to him. After some time he had almost forgotten about it but every now and then when he stumbled upon the device he remembered the other and everything that he did for him.
He was sitting outside of Yoda's hut. Tired from all the training and being on this planet with only Yoda to keep him company. While he was thankful that he had a great teacher he would've definitely preferred Obi-Wan. Thinking about it made his stomach turn a bit. He never thanked him. When his old friend died he was still so mad about everything, about him not getting him out earlier. He didn't want him to think that he was still mad at him because he wasn't. To be honest he might have never really been mad at him. Thinking about it, sure there was the initial burst of anger but after that, he had just pretended to be angry and tried to convince himself that he was. It was a defense mechanism because, in fact, he had been scared, scared of being hurt again, scared of Obi-Wan leaving him.
His hand went over his neck, gently caressing it. It has been so long now but it still feels like it wasn't long enough. Those years have messed him up more than he would like to admit. He tried to forget it, tried to move on, to concentrate on his training on the rebellion but he couldn't. His hands got a bit shaky, not as bad as that one night when the Mandalorian comforted him but just enough for him to notice. He took a few deep breaths in an attempt to calm himself because even if he still couldn't fully shake those memories he had at least gotten a bit better at handling them. The thing was being on Dagobah with only RD2D as company was getting to him. He didn't like being isolated, being alone with his thoughts. But most of all he missed his family, the family he had finally found.
Every few nights he would just look up at the sky and try to imagine what the others were doing. Leia was probably still up working much to Han's disapproval. Luke knew they had a thing for each other even if the princess didn't want to admit it. He smiled to himself thinking about C3PO arguing with Chewie. His hand had stopped shaking ad he recalled playing that chess-like game with the Wookie. It had been fun. Being with them always made him feel safe, feel at home. He loved them and cared for them deeply, which was something Yoda clearly disapproved of. Luke knew he wasn't mad about it. It rather seemed like his teacher was worried.
Suddenly he got pulled out of his thoughts by a ringing. He almost jumped and immediately went to search for the old holo com that Din had given him. For a moment he just stared at it unsure if he should pick up or not. It felt as if his heart had stopped. Noticing how long he left it ringing already and scared the person on the other line would give up he quickly picked up.
Din had spent his years doing his normal work, though he could never ignore the nagging feeling that something might have happened to the other. He didn't quite know why he worried but he did. Those blue piercing eyes never left him. Over time he started to focus on other things and it worked for the most part. He even started working for Jabba again as if nothing happened. The Hutt was mad for the first few weeks after everything but got over it quickly handing it to him that he outsmarted him.
The empire never gave him much trouble. It was probably the benefit of wearing a helmet everywhere and keeping a low profile. He slipped through controls and past stormtroopers, none of them any wiser that he helped the rebels. To be fair he only really helped them because of the Jedi. If he had never met him he wouldn't have done anything. Sometimes that bothers him that he can turn a blind eye to things so easily if he wanted to. He ignored his thoughts and went to look for a new job. When he got to his usual joint he saw a group of bounty hunters huddled around some imperial soldiers. Knowing that this couldn't be good he joined the group to listen and find out more.
He heard them talking about a job for a lot of credits, like a sketchy amount. Thinking it was a scam he was about to turn around when he heard the name of the bounty. Luke Skywalker. He felt his breath hitch and his heart flutter. It has been years since he saw him. He shouldn't care so why did he? Seeing the picture they provided just drove the point home. It was a picture of him when he was still at Jabba's place. Din tried his best to let no one notice his change in demeanor. He waited until the crowd disbursed and left for his ship which was parked nearby. On the way, he heard the other bounty hunter talk about the Jedi, about how he could buy them a nice new ship and Din hated himself for thinking the same way about him at one point.
When he arrived at his ship he looked for his holo com everywhere. He had to warn him even if the conversation would be awkward. Finally finding it he hesitated. Should he really call him? The Jedi never contacted him, so he probably didn't want to hear from him, right? He probably already knew about it using his space magic thingy. Or did he? What if he didn't and he was in danger? Before he knew it Din had called him. He anxiously stared at it. It rang for a long time and he was just about to stop the call thinking the other probably didn't even have the holo com anymore when the call went through.
"Din?" Luke started at the device in his hand. He felt his head spin and a smile creep on his face. "Oh my- I- how are you?" Seeing the other even as a little hologram made his heart skip a beat.
"Luke, where are you? You're in danger."
"What?"
"You are in danger. I'll come get you. Just tell me where you are."
"Wait." Luke looked at him confused. The smile on his face dropped. "Din, I don't understand. What is going on?"
"I just overheard some imperial soldiers. They are sending bounty hunters to get you. It's bad, you don't want to know how much they are paying them."
"Wait-" He took a minute to think just to make a horrible realization. "They won't find me where I am but they might find Leia and Han! I need to make sure they're safe."
"But that's probably exactly what they want. Luke, you can't-"
'I have to! If they get hurt- if they get hurt because of me I will never forgive myself." He looked up at the other. "Din, I need to get to them."
"Okay, let me help you."
"I couldn't-"
"Please, let me help."
"Alright, let me send you my location." He hung up and send it to him. Luckily Yoda had pulled out his X-wing a few days ago. Quickly he went to it and finished cleaning out the rest of the swamp gunk. When he finished he went to collect his stuff. During the last nights, he had nightmares that something happened to them, and saw them in a city up in the clouds. He went inside Yoda's hut to get RD2D. "Come on buddy we got to go."
Yoda got up from where he was meditating and asked him where he was going.
"My friends are in danger. I've got to go to them. I need to make sure they're okay."
"Decide you must how to serve them best. If you leave now help them you could, but you would destroy all for which they have fought and suffered."
Luke took a minute to think about what his teacher had said but shook his head. "Sorry, Yoda, I need to go." He went and put on his flight suit getting ready for takeoff.
"Luke, you must complete the training."
"I can't keep the thoughts of them getting hurt out of my head. They're my family I have to help them." He helped RD2D in his ship and checked the time. Din should be waiting just on the next planet to discuss their plan.
"You must not go."
"But Han and Leia will die if I don't. Look I am sorry but I can't risk their lives to finish my training here."
Yoda tried to argue with him to stay a bit longer but Luke couldn't. He knew he couldn't and there was no way around it. "I'll come back, I promise." With that, he took off.
Din was sitting in the small bar they agreed on. He didn't know how the other would react to seeing him after three years of no contact and he didn't know how he himself would react. Maybe this was all a mistake he should have just warned him and left it at that but he couldn't. When the Jedi walked in he held his breath. He looked so different. There weren't any faded bruises around his neck anymore. On top of that he wasn't lanky and thin anymore he had gotten buff. The way he carried himself also looked more confident and less anxious. Din remembered the first time he walked over the market with him after freeing him and the panicked look he had unsure what to do know. But right now there wasn't even a glimpse of that. A smile crept onto his face.
Luke saw the other sitting at a table in the corner. "Din!" He hurried over to him and before the Mandalorian could react or protest he pulled him into a hug. Even if he was freaking out inside about how awkward this was he didn't care. He just pulled him into a hug. "Are you okay? Did anyone give you trouble?"
"I'm alright. Are you?"
"Yeah, just worried about Leia and Han. I hope they're gonna be okay." Luke looked at his hands. "I think I know where they are. I just need to sneak in."
"But it's most likely a trap. If they want you you'd be walking right into it."
"I don't really have a choice Din."
"Okay, but I'll come with you. We'll take my ship and sneak in. They are only expecting you to come not some random bounty hunter so we have the upper hand. When we land they will probably monitor you so I will wait until the coast is clear to come out as well and follow you."
"But they are probably expecting my ship, flying with yours would arouse suspicion."
"Doesn't your X-wing only hold one person?"
"Yeah, but you could trail after and get in separately with your ship. They don't know you just say you were told there was a job for you or something. They will probably be too occupied with the whole empire business to suspect you." Luke looked at him worry painted on his face. "Look, Din, if anything goes wrong I want you to leave without me and save yourself. I can't be responsible for more people getting hurt."
"Luke-"
"Promise me."
"I promise."
"Okay let's go." They went and took off.
Din trailed after the Jedi with just enough distance to seem like they weren't coming together and just like the other said they seemed confused and irritated but let him land. Now it was only a matter of finding the other again.
Luke had snuck into the building. He knew they knew he was there but he had to try anyway. There was no going back. He carefully hurried over the empty corridor seeing Han frozen in Carbonite being carried off. Shit. Was he too late? He wanted to follow him but before he could he got shot at by Boba. Well, this wasn't what he expected. He waited until the bounty hunter stopped shooting at him to follow him. But before he knew it he ran into a second group of stormtroopers who had Leia, Chewie, and C3PO.
Again he tried to follow them and got shot at. As his friends got dragged away Leia yelled at him that it was a trap. He knew that it was but he couldn't just leave. Seeing them after his time apart only to get separated immediately again hurt. He just wanted to sit down with them and drink or talk like they did after the death star. Not knowing what to do he still followed them. When he went through the door the room he entered was rather ominous. "Oh, this isn't good." It was pretty dim only small lights barely illuminating the room. If the situation hadn't been so serious Luke would have made a joke about how stupid and overdramatic this all was. "I have a very bad feeling about this."
Din on the other hand might not have found Luke but he had found Han who was being carried away. Solo definitely had looked better. He followed him around to see Boba with him. Of course, Fett took the bounty on the smuggler's head, it was a great deal and he had always been somewhat close to the Hutt. Din quickly took out the two stormtroopers and imperial guards. He was lucky he had his silencer on. Boba looked at him and opened fire.
They were at a standstill both being good shots. Din didn't know what to do he tried to etch ever so closer that was until Fett aimed his blaster up and shot at the ceiling making it crumble between them. He used that time to leave. "Bastard." Din was mad that he had just managed to evade him this easily but part of him was also impressed. He tried to find a way when he heard a second commotion in the hallway. It was the Wookie screaming. Feeling split in two a took a quick second to weigh his options before running in his direction. There was no way he would get to Solo in time and at least like that he could try and make sure the others were okay.
When he ran into Leia she almost shot him, probably thanks to Fett wearing the same armor as him. He put his hands up.
"Another bounty hunter?" She didn't seem to recognize him and who could blame her it's been years.
"It's Din." The Mandalorian looked at her calmly. "I'm here with Luke. I heard about the bounty and wanted to make sure he was okay. I-" He got pulled into a hug.
"Oh my, how could I forget? You're the Mandalorian who helped with the death star!" She smiled at him before their situation dawned on her again. "I would love to chat but we need to get Han. He-"
"Fett already took him. I tried to get to him but he was too fast. I'm sorry."
They wanted to talk more but got attacked by Stormtroopers. Din only now noticed the other man with them. But seeing as he shot at the Troopers he assumed he was on their side. The group managed to get to the millennium falcon and flee after the man who Din learned was called Lando told the city to evacuate. Shit! Luke was still in that city. As if the Jedi could read his concern Leia heard him calling and told Chewie to turn around. They saw him hanging from the city.
"Kriff, that kid-" Lando looked at him through the window of the falcon.
Quickly but carefully they got him into the ship. Din had got up to the top hatch the catch him. "Got you."
Luke held onto him tired as he went back to the cockpit with him and they finally took off. Din felt his stomach turn seeing his wounded face. Leia immediately ran up to him helping to stabilize the Jedi.
"Are you okay?" She sat him down. "You look horrible."
"I'm okay."
Din looked him up and down noticing one of his hands missing. "Kriff, Luke, your hand."
Luke looked at the stump where his right hand used to be. "Oh- I'm fine. I mean, I'm not but it doesn't hurt-"
"Okay, you're in shock." Leia gently caressed his cheek. "Come on let me look at it." She took him to the living area and made him sit down. "Alright, at least you won't bleed out as the wound has been cauterized. We can fix this in the medical bay at the rebellion fleet. We'll get you a robotic hand or something." She looked at Din. "Can you watch him for a while? I need to speak with Lando."
"Sure."
"Make sure he doesn't faint or anything. He's probably still in shock." With that, she left them.
Luke smiled at the Mandalorian. "Guess this is the new me huh?" He raised the stump looking at it.
"I mean it's unique. You can lean into it. It's definitely a story to tell." Din was babbling not sure how to comfort the other.
"Maybe I can get different attachments." The Jedi chuckled. "Oh, when the shock wears off I am going to be in so much pain." He let his head fall against his chest plate. "Kriff, this is bad."
"Just hang in there. We're gonna fix this." Din gently put his hand on his head. He wasn't sure if he was allowed to touch him like that. But when he felt him relax with his touch he just left his hand there. It felt like they had just seen each other a week prior. Seeing him again after all that time hadn't felt uncomfortable like he thought it just felt normal.
Luke like him touching him. It felt so caring and gentle. He melted into the touch. Maybe he should have called him or left with him because right now he noticed how much he had missed him and how he made him feel safe.

I really enjoy writing this! :) Let's see where the two end up next-
Chapter 7: The calm before the Storm
Chapter Text
After getting a new cybernetic hand Luke was getting adjusted to it in the medical wing. Din was planning on how to get his ship back caught up in his thoughts.
"Hey, Din!" Luke went up behind him surprising the other. "Look, it almost looks like my real hand." He showed off his new hand.
"Oh, wow, they really did a good job." Din looked at it but got distracted by the other's bright smile. "You look better."
"I feel better. Though to be honest it might just be the pain medication. Sorry about your ship. But I'm sure we'll get it back!"
"Yeah, maybe we can manage to get your x-wing back too."
"Hopefully. That ship and I have been through a lot together." Luke took the Mandalorian's hand. "You want to walk a bit with me? This station is giant and I feel like finding some nice quiet place to bunker down."
"Sure." Din walked down the hallway with him not minding that he still held onto his hand.
"Oh by the way, do you know where they took Han?"
"Yes, but you're not gonna like it."
"Why?"
"Fett took him to Jabba's Palace. Turns out Solo had some unpaid debt."
Din was right Luke didn't like this, not one bit. He stopped for a second. "Well, this complicates things."
"You don't have to go. Leia seems more than capable of handling rescuing Han. Lando would probably help too."
"It's okay. I'll go with them we just need to adjust the plan." The Jedi shrugged and turned to him smiling. "But let's not worry about this today. You've got to tell me all about what you've been up to for the past years!"
Din was taken aback a bit, surprised but also flustered at how Luke looked at him. "I- uh, there's not really much to tell. Nothing really changed I just took some more jobs over the years."
"Tell me about them." Luke kept walking with him. He smiled to himself listening to the stories. They eventually found a quiet place to sit down.
The Mandalorian had forgotten how nice it felt to just talk to him. He liked him listening so intently and paying attention to him. When he finished Luke laughed at the story and gently nudged him with his elbow and his heart fluttered. Kriff. When did he become so handsome?
The Jedi felt calm sitting next to him and listening to his story. He slightly moved closer their legs touching ever so slightly. "Sounds like you had some interesting jobs."
"Yeah, what about you?"
"Oh, we moved around a lot with the empire on our back and everything. There were a few close calls like on that ice planet we stayed on but overall we managed to stay safe." Luke remembered that one time he nearly froze to death. "I went to train with this old Jedi master. He's a bit strange but a good guy, not much for conversation though. Being alone on that planet with him and R2D2 was boring from time to time but hey now I got a better grasp on his whole force thing."
"That sounds nice. So you're a real Jedi now?"
"Well, Jedi in training more like it." He put up his robotic hand. "I definitely have a lot more to learn." A chuckle escaped his mouth. "Thanks for staying with me and making sure I was okay."
"Don't mention it."
"You are way too humble, Din. I really appreciate all your help. Someday I'm gonna repay you!" Luke leaned against him playfully and just hoped the other didn't mind. "One day I'll save your life, you'll see. I'm gonna make some cool entrance or something. It's all about presentation."
"I'll hold you to that." The Mandalorian joked. "If you don't save my life like a badass with a great entrance I'm going to be disappointed."
"I never disappoint."
"Yeah?" Din teased him.
Luke looked up at him only now noticing how close he was to him. "You doubting me?"
"And if I was?"
"Well, then I'd just have to prove you wrong." He smiled at him moving a bit closer so there was only an inch between his face and Din's helmet.
"Ah, there you are!" Leia came up behind them.
Luke flinched and moved back. "Oh- Hey, is everything alright?"
"Mind if I steal you for a second?"
He went with her a bit annoyed at the disruption. Before moving out of eyesight and earshot of the Mandalorian he gave him an apologetic look and mouthed be right back. "So, what's up?"
"I wanted to check if you were okay. You were supposed to check back at the medical station to get some more medication for the night."
"Wait, it's that late already?"
"Yes, I was worried you might have passed out somewhere or something."
"Sorry, I guess I lost track of time." He scratched the back of his neck feeling guilty that he made her worry.
Leia just smiled and sighed. "Well, you're alright so everything's fine. But I guess time flies with good company, huh?" She teased.
"I don't know what you mean."
"I think it's adorable." She handed him the pills. "I'll let you two catch up some more."
"Thanks." Luke took the painkillers and went back to Din.
"Everything okay?"
"Yeah, Leia just gave me some more pain medication for the night." He sat back down next to him. "Where were we? Oh yeah, me saving you in the future."
Din chuckled and Luke cursed Leia for interrupting them. If the Jedi was honest he had always gravitated towards the Mandalorian. How couldn't he? He was kind and cared for him even if he had a more rough exterior. On top of that, his voice was calming to listen to, like it was his favorite song.
"Guess I got to get myself in a troubling situation then." Din smiled to himself.
"You better." Luke leaned back against him. "I am worried about how this whole rebellion will end."
"It's going to be fine."
"You think so?"
"I know so. Like you said yourself losing is not an option." Din gently put his hand on the other's trying to reassure him.
"You remember that?"
"Yes, and I believe you."
Luke was touched. He felt his heart melt. "Thank you."
"Do you sometimes think about what would have been if you left with me or if I stayed?"
"Yeah, I actually thought about it a lot after you left. But I think it's good that I didn't leave with you. I would have probably been happy, perfectly safe, and still have my right hand." He chuckled and closed his eye. "But I would have never trained or made a bigger difference in this world. I would've been the same defenseless kid I was three years ago." There was a short pause. "I might still fail and struggle but I am happy with the person I managed to become. But I think it's also good that you didn't stay. Don't get me wrong I would have loved for you to stay but it wouldn't have made you happy. You have your own life and I think that's great. I think no one should pressure you to change that. I mean that's what I like about you."
"Yeah?"
"Yes, you have your own morals and code that you stick to. You chose a path but aren't selfish about it. I mean you went out of your way to help me again. It's admirable." Luke nudged him. "I'm glad you're here now, though."
Din just hummed a quiet "Hm" and they just sat there for a while enjoying the calm when the Jedi's medication kicked in and he started to dose off. The Mandalorian didn't quite know what to do looking at the sleeping figure. Should he wake him? Maybe he could just let him sleep a bit longer. He watched his chest slowly rise and drop. The other seemed so calm he didn't want to disturb him even if that meant sitting here the whole night. After a while, the other started to tumble over and afraid he might fall off the bench Din carefully put his arm around him steadying him. Was he allowed to do that? They hadn't spoken in three years so why did this feel so normal?
A while later Luke woke up still drowsy. He looked around unsure where he was when his eyes settled on the Mandalorian. "Din?"
"Oh, you're awake."
"Sorry for falling asleep."
"Don't worry about it. Looks like you needed it."
Luke sat up stretching as a yawn escaped his mouth. "You could've woken me up."
"I know."
"Thanks though for letting me nap a bit." He smiled at him while fixing his hair.
"Maybe you should go to sleep and rest."
"I think you're right. Walk me to my room?"
"Sure." Din walked with him, the ship being oddly quiet and empty at this hour. He felt his hand brush up against the other and it made him want to grab it but he just kept on moving.
When they arrived at the Jedi's room Luke hugged him. "See you tomorrow?"
"Yeah."
"I missed you, Din. Have a good rest of the night."
"You too." The Mandalorian watched him disappear into his room and went to sleep himself.

Chapter Text
The next day Luke headed off in search for a new lightsaber and Din left to get his ship back. When the Mandalorian came back after a week the other was still gone. He looked for the princess. "Excuse me."
"Oh hello, Din, you're back, took you a while." Leia smiled at him. "How can I help you?"
"Yeah, I ran into a bit of trouble and had to lay low. Is Luke back yet?"
"No, he's still off doing his Jedi stuff."
"Do you think he's okay?"
Leia chuckled softly. "It's sweet that you care. But I am sure he's fine. This whole thing probably only takes a while."
"Oh ok."
"Are you going to stick around this time? I know someone who might like that."
Din wondered who she meant by that. "I can't. Sorry, I need to get back to my tribe."
"Of course, if there is anything we can do for you to thank you for all of your help just say so."
"It's okay." He paused for a second. "Actually can you tell Luke to stay safe and call me if he gets into trouble?"
"Sure, but you do the same." She smiled at him. "We'll have your back too."
At the time Luke came back a few months later Din was already gone. He was sad about it of course but had expected as much. On top of that, there were more pressing matters, Han. During his trip he had thought of a plan, he didn't like it but it would put the least amount of people at risk. When the day came he had his lightsaber hidden in R2D2 and Leia dressed up as a bounty hunter mask and all. Before they went in she stopped him.
"Are you sure about this?" Her voice was completely distorted due to the voice changer. "We can always back out and find a new plan."
"I've got this. I'll just wait for the right opportunity to get Han and get out." He smiled at her. "Don't worry about me. I got this."
"Okay, if you need help just send for us. We will be there in a second."
"I will."
The two went aside R2 beeping next to them. As soon as Luke set foot into the hall seeing the Hutt and everyone he felt his heart drop. Maybe he wasn't ready for this. He felt everything come up again as if someone scratched open an old wound. Knowing that Leia would immediately abort if she noticed his discomfort he took a deep breath and tried to calm himself. The next few minutes had been a blur. The princess delivered her lines about haven found a particular slave the Hutt might be interested in and that she had wanted his favor so it was a gift along with the droid.
Jabba looked at the bounty hunter curiously and didn't quite know what they meant until he meet eyes with the man, blue eyes piercing through him. "Ah, the Jetii!"
Luke picked at the skin around his fingers feeling him stare into him. This was fine. Everything was fine. He gathered all his will and just stared back at him. Right, he wasn't the same person as those years ago. He got this.
Jabba laughed happily. He gestured for some of his guards to take him away before turning back towards the princess. "You join our festivities! You made a friend."
Luke found himself in a room having some clothes thrown at him. He quickly changed into a rather revealing outfit. Needing to find a place for his communicator he quickly slipped it into his shoes before stepping outside to the guards. Never had he thought he would let them put chains on him again. They didn't feel as heavy as they used to though, probably due to the muscles he gained. Yoda might have said strength comes from somewhere else but right now the physical part definitely helped. He still felt like he was about to have a panic attack but he just followed them out.
Leia didn't like this. the other was right this was the least risky plan. But when she saw him step out in the outfit, his eyes full of emotions with nothing she could pinpoint, she felt sick to the stomach. This was so wrong. He had only ever let a few things about his past slip but it was enough for her to know that it was horrible. Not being able to watch this she left. She was just supposed to drop him off and as much as she wanted to get him out of there right now she trusted him.
The Jedi looked after her when Jabba dragged him over at the chain making him sit close to him. Luke managed to swallow his emotions. He just watched everyone mingle and some Twi'lek girl perform. The night went on without much fuzz. But when the silence hit him he started to feel his emotions overwhelm him again all the things he had buried deep down and repressed. He grabbed the chain around his neck trying to pull it away because he felt like he was suffocating. There was no way to calm him down again. He felt tears run down his cheeks. "Kriff." Why couldn't he just deal with it, be over it? It had been so long but being back here in that outfit just brought it all to the surface. He closed his eyes and imagined himself somewhere safe. Before he knew it he thought of Din. His mind wandered to their evening before they parted, to how the Mandalorian put his arm around him and how gentle he always was. Thinking about that he finally managed to get some sleep.
The next day he was allowed to mingle a bit with the other people in the palace. The Hutt was never sexually interested in any of the slaves which was a blessing. He seemed to just enjoy the company and entrainment they provided as well as getting to look at pretty people. If it weren't for the situation Luke would probably feel somewhat flattered. He found himself strolling through the masses trying to locate Han. When he saw him adorning a wall like some decoration he felt awful. This was so wrong. But before he could look at it longer some guest wrapped him up in conversation. He talked with the man and ignored how he looked at him.
Throughout the day he did his best to entertain the guest without letting them too close to him. He almost flinched when he saw Din come in. Kriff, he didn't want him to see him like that. Quickly he tried to escape his field of vision. He moved through the guests but it was of no use as he found him looking right at him. When he noticed him wanting to come up to him he shook his head slightly gesturing to him that right now wasn't the right time.
For the rest of the evening, he could feel the other stare at him. Finally, having managed to get out of Jabba's sight he went up to Din pulling him a bit further from the main group.
"Luke, what is going on?" Din gently put his hand on his shoulder. He was concerned.
But the Jedi just smiled and put his hand on his. "Everything's okay. I can't tell you more right now. Not here but I am alright."
Din wasn't really convinced but he respected the other and knew he must have some plan. But he planned to stick around just in case. He watched Luke from afar making sure he was okay.
Luke did his job with ease almost as if he never left, which somewhat worried him, that was at least until he got ordered to privately entertain someone for the night. Most of the people had already left, gone to sleep, or disbursed except for the man. He didn't want this but also felt like he had no choice. So he followed him down the hall to a room. When they arrived at the room he felt the man touching his waist, the touch burning under his skin, in a bad, not sexy way. He flinched making the man grab onto him harder. Eventually, he found himself pushed onto the bed the man leaning over him cornering him. "Stop."
"What?"
"Stop! Don't touch me, please." He felt his voice fail him as the man ignored his pleas. Trying to push him off he failed since the other was bigger and stronger than him. Tears filled his eyes. "I said stop!"
Din who had gotten worried had actually taken a Twi'lek girl to the room next to him in hopes of being able to get him out somehow. When she tried to make some advances he quickly turned her down saying she could just go to sleep instead. Confused but not complaining the girl sat on her bed while he figured out what to do. He was just about to go outside and try knocking on the door when he heard a crash coming from the room. Quickly he rushed out and into the room to find the man slumped against the wall bleeding and Luke shocked on the bed.
"Luke!" He hurried over to him kneeling in front of him to block the sight. "Are you okay?"
The Jedi didn't answer shaking and just staring at him.
"Can I hug you?"
A nod.
Din carefully touched his arms, easing him into it before embracing him to calm him down. He felt the other's hands desperately cling to him and his heart broke. "You need some air."
"I-" He got interrupted by sobs. "I can't leave."
"You need to leave. This is not safe."
"No, Han-"
Din made him look at him. He knew there was no way to talk him out of it. "Then let me help you. There is no need for you to do this alone." His hands cupped the Jedi's face and he gently wiped away some stray tears.
"Okay."
"Now, let's sort this out." He kept caressing his cheeks to calm him down. "Can you tell me what happened?"
Luke looked at him as lost as when the other had freed him all those years ago and even though he never saw his face looking at him calmed his nerves. The normally so cold and emotionless helmet somehow looked so soft on him. "I tried to get him to stop but he wouldn't-" He paused. "So, I tried pushing him off and I don't know how or why but I must how been so desperate that I unintentionally used the force." He took a deep breath to try and gather himself again. "Is- is he alright?"
Din felt his heart break all over again hearing the shakiness in his voice. "Why do you care? He hurt you."
"Please, Din."
"I'll check. You stay here." He stood up and went towards the man. He checked his pulse and he was still alive just knocked out. Well saying 'just' might not do it justice he had a major head wound and probably some brain damage. "He's alive."
"Oh, thank god." Luke sighed relieved until he realized he was alive. "Kriff! He's gonna be so mad and probably tell Jabba and-"
"Don't worry about it. I'll take care of it."
"What?"
"I'll take him outside and talk to him. I can be very convincing." Din looked at the wound, he would have to fix it up. So he tore a bit of his sleeve off to bandage it.
Luke watched him intently seeing a part of his skin. He felt himself staring and looked away not wanting to make the Mandalorian uncomfortable.
After a while and cleaning off the blood from the wall he handed the other the blanket that had fallen off the bed as well. "You must be cold."
"I- thank you."
"Are you okay?"
"I will be."
Din kneeled back down in front of him to be on eye level. "You know you can always call me if anything is wrong right?"
Luke felt a small smile creep on his face after everything that happened this night, being here with him right now felt good. He leaned his forehead against the other's. "I know, Din. Thank you."
Din was just about to answer when he heard the man wake up. He went over to him.
"What?" He held his head confused looking around before realizing what happened. "You little-" Before he could finish his sentence he got pulled up by Din. "Hey-"
"We're going for a little walk." Din held his blaster against the man's side discreetly before walking out. He was glad it was dark because it had made it easier for them to slip past the guards. When they arrived outside he spoke up again. "You're lucky you only got knocked out."
"What do you want Mando?"
"I want you to leave, never come back and never tell anyone about this."
"And what is if I don't?"
Din held his blaster up to his neck. "I'll find you."
The man rolled his eyes but as he was only some rich asshole with no real fighting experience he agreed and left. Din took a deep breath this was bad. This whole plan was such a bad idea not only is this probably horrible for the Jedi's mental health but he is lucky that Jabba's 'colleagues' feared the Hutt or they would have turned his 'new slave' into the empire real quick. Luke had to learn how to lay low, he was an official war criminal after all.
So, he decided to stick around to make sure nothing bad happened. He had gotten attached and it was bad.
The next day went normal, he felt the Twi'lek girl eye him still confused. But he focused on the Jedi who had gone back to his usual self, though he noticed he was a bit more tense keeping more of a distance from people.
Luke spent the day talking to more of the guest and entertaining Jabba by doing some small Jedi tricks. He managed to get a few moments with R2D2 who was not happy that he was now a glorified moving table. As the night rolled around he hoped to get a good night of sleep when he heard that someone had requested his services. Great. He missed the days Jabba had kept him all to himself. Trying to figure out a way to get out of this he went to the room where the guest was apparently already waiting.
When he stepped through the door surprise hit him. "Din?"
"I thought this way you wouldn't have to worry about people booking you and you could just sleep."
Luke felt his heart flutter. How could someone be so considerate and sweet? He beamed and pulled him into a hug. "Thank you, you big softie!"
Din wanted to protest but just smiled letting the other hug him.
"You scared me! You could've told me beforehand. I was walking down here all nervous and uncomfortable."
"Sorry."
"Don't apologize." Luke chuckled and gently nudged him. "You are way too nice."
"So, what's the plan? When are you getting Han out?"
"I thought this would be easier but there are always so many eyes everywhere and this outfit doesn't really make it easier to blend it."
"We could get him out at night, together."
"What if we get caught and you get hurt?"
"Mesh'la, I am not worried about that. I am worried about your safety here." Din didn't quite know why he called him that. To be fair he was beautiful but it just kind of slipped out. "Look, I can take care of myself, worry about yourself for once please."
Luke smiled at him softly. He didn't know what he called him but it made his heart flutter. "Okay, maybe we can do that tomorrow night? We can sneak passed the main hall and get him out, quick and easy, at least I hope so." He took his hand. "You truly are one of the best people I've ever met, Din. You must be my guardian angel or something, always showing up when I need you the most." He gently squeezed it. "Thank you, I feel like I say that a lot but also not enough."
Din was happy just being able to help him. He wanted to hold him close and shelter him but knew he shouldn't, he had already gotten way too attached and too far in. "You should try and get some sleep."
"Stay with me?"
"I-"
"Please."
"Okay."
Luke shuffled to the side of the bed and gestured to him to join him. He was sitting against the headboard.
Din carefully sat down next to him. He didn't really know what to do when the Jedi leaned against him.
"You make me feel safe." Luke closed his eyes and enjoyed the closeness. He had seen him at his worse when he was a shadow of himself and he never thought less of him. Even when he was unsure of himself, he respected him. The simple motion of offering him his hand and a spare change of clothes back when they met made him melt. This man had shown him kindness when most people wouldn't and he saved him not only physically but mentally. He wasn't sure how long he could've stayed in the trade before he would have lost any semblance of himself.
They stayed like that until both of them fell asleep. When Din woke up he felt a bit sore from sleeping in his armor but seeing the Jedi leaning against him still sleeping calmly made it all worth it. He waited a bit longer before nudging him awake.
Luke drowsily looked up at him a smile spreading across his face. "Good morning." He had an indent where his face connected with his armor.
"Morning, mesh'la."
He sat up stretching. Just one more day and he was out of there for good. He should probably let Leia know. So he took out his communicator at sent her a message that if he didn't make it to the pick-up spot tonight something went wrong. "Okay, so tonight-" He paused getting a bit worried.
"It's going to be okay."
"I know." Luke looked at the time. "I should probably get out there. I will meet you tonight."
"Okay."
They parted ways and during the whole day Luke couldn't help but glance over at Din. He had definitely grown attached to him and wished that maybe this time they could stick together.
When the time came Din had again requested the Jedi for the night and Jabba obliged but wondered why the Mandalorian had sold the slave if he liked playing with him so much. Luke went to the room with him and they waited until it got quiet to sneak out. They made sure to be as quiet as possible when Luke tripped and almost fell against the Hutt when Din caught him. He looked up at him the other's strong arm around his waist. Feeling his face burn up a bit and get red he quickly stood up and mouthed a thank you before continuing to walk.
Din followed him and watched him unfreeze the smuggler who fell on the ground before them.
Luke kneeled down next to him and helped him up having him lean against him, the other shivering and clearly disoriented. "Han, relax, it's me, Luke. You're okay. We're going to get you out of here." He pushed some of his hair out of his face.
"I can't see."
"Your eyesight will return in time," Din answered. "It's hibernation sickness."
"Is that the Mandalorian?"
"Yes."
"Where am I?"
Luke held him stable so he wouldn't fall over. "Jabba's palace. Come on we have to get you out of here." He helped him stand letting him rest against him. They were just about to leave when they heard Jabba laugh behind them. "Kriff, really?"
"I know that laugh," Han spoke up. "Look, Jabba, I was just on my way to pay you back and I got a little sidetracked. It's not my fault."
"It's too late Solo. You may have been a good smuggler. But now your Bantha fodder. Take him away."
Han tried to argue but got dragged away no matter how hard Luke tried to hold onto him.
"As for you two." He looked at Din and him. "I am disappointed. Take the Mandalorian to the smuggler as for the slave-" He paused. "Bring him over to me."
Luke looked at Din scared he didn't want him to die or get hurt because he dragged him into this stupid rescue mission. He tried to get to him but they both got dragged apart.
Din went into the cell without a fuss, knowing that he would have to find a way out.
"Who's there?" Han was still majorly disoriented.
"It's the Mandalorian."
"What's gonna happen to the kid? He's crazy thinking he can rescue someone when he can't even take care of himself."
"He's going to be okay. He's a Jedi now." Din answered but was worried himself.
"A real Jedi? How long have I been gone for?"
"I think it's been a year."
"A year?!"
Meanwhile, Luke was brought in front of the Hutt. "Jabba, let my friends go. We can give you triple the amount Han owes you and you can profit from this."
"Little Jetii slave wants to make deals?"
"I urge you not to underestimate me."
"I will not bargain with you, slave. I shall continue to enjoy watching your circus tricks in my court."
Luke looked over to see one of the guard's guns and pulled it over to himself with the force pointing it at the Hutt. But before he could shoot the trap door beneath him opened and he and one of Jabba's men dropped into the Rancor pit. "Kriff." He knew the trouble he was in he had seen too many people get dropped in here. But if the Hutt thought he would go down without a fight he was mistaken.
He stepped back as he saw it come out of it's den and eat the guard. It was way more intimidating in person but he quickly grabbed one of the bones on the ground before getting picked up. He couldn't lose. This wasn't only about him but Han and Din as well. So thinking quickly he shoved the bone in the beast's mouth keeping it open and impossible for it to bite down, which made it drop him. He looked at the exit and opened the gate running out of it to find a second locked gate. "You have to be kidding me.' Panicking he looked around to see the Rancor come toward him. He grabbed a rock and though he was planning to throw it against the giant first he saw the button he used to open the first gate. Hoping he wouldn't miss he threw it against the button making the gate drop and fall on the beast killing it.
He took a deep breath feeling bad because in the end it had been trapped here just like him but he had no choice. The Hutt wasn't as happy though as he ordered his men to get Din and Han as they would all collectively suffer for this. At the same time, Leia and Chewbacca arrived having grown concerned about them not making it to the meeting point. They naturally immediately got apprehended but not before Lando managed to sneak in dressed as a guard.
Luke saw Han again as they together with Chewie and Din got hauled off. "Han! Are you alright?"
"Luke! Together again."
"Wouldn't miss it."
"How are we doing?"
"Same as always."
"That bad, huh?"
The smuggler heard the Wookie greet him happy to see his best friend alive again.
"Chewie, is that you? How did you get roped into this?"
The Wookie answered.
"Leia is here too? Where?"
The princess who was now dressed in a slave's outfit and sitting in front of the Hutt answered. "I'm here."
Jabba declared that they would be terminated immediately too with Han making an off-hand joke about hating long waits that made Luke chuckle. Before it was announced that they would be taken to the Dune Sea and cast into the Pit of Carkoon, where Sarlacc resides, where they would be slowly digested.
"You should've bargained." Luke comment. "That's the last mistake you'll ever make." They got taken away while both Han and Din wondered why in the hell the Jedi was so confident.
"I think my eyes are getting better," Han mentioned while they were on a ship driving through the dune sea. "Instead of a big dark blur, I see a big light blur."
"There's nothing to see." Luke joked. "I used to live here, you know."
"You're going to die here, you know. Convenient."
Luke knew he still had an ace up his sleeve in case everything went wrong. There was a reason he had R2 hide his lightsaber. The only thing he dreaded was having to fight in this outfit which was in fact not convenient at all.
Din looked over his shoulder. "Actually yeah, why are you so confident?"
Luke smiled at him. "Don't worry. Just look after Han with Lando for me okay? I've got this."
"Oh great," Han interjected.
When they arrived Luke looked down at the pit. It was nasty but also kind of cute in a way. It looked like a little bird. Still, he would prefer not to be too close to it. He stepped up to the plank and after another one of Jabba's speeches he spoke up. "Jabba, this is your last chance. Free us or die."
The Hutt laughed, never had he seen such misplaced confidence. Not only were they on the executioner's road but the Jedi was still dressed in his slave outfit.
Din watched him step forward and give a salute like a madman when he jumped off grabbing hold of the plank and flinging himself back up with a front flip while grabbing the lightsaber R2D2 had shot out for him. A fight broke loose as multiple guards fell off the ship into the pit. He joined in nicking a blaster and kicking someone down while helping the Wookie keep the still half-blind Han safe.
During the turmoil, Boba Fett flew over to them shooting at them which made Luke wonder why he hadn't turned him over to the empire yet. Maybe he had been afraid of the Hutt or his relationship with Jabba had been more complicated.
Lando got kicked down holding onto the ship for dear life when Han heard him screaming for help he leaned down to pull him back up. Din meanwhile shooting down the guards on the main ship, Jabba's ship, that were trying to shoot Luke.
The Jedi fought with Boba Fett cutting open his jet pack. He hesitated for a while recalling how he had been kind to him when he was a slave before he ultimately kicked him into the pit as the bounty hunter tried to do the same to him. "Sorry!" He looked after him for a second before jumping on the second smaller ship to make quick work of the guards there.
Leia meanwhile strangled Jabba with her own chain which was honestly really cathartic for her.
Din had lost sight of Luke until he saw him climbing the exterior of the big ship. "Kriff, that is impressive." He shot down one of the guards trying to shoot him down before helping Han and Chewie to pull Lando up.
Luke had gotten to the deck where Leia was. "Are you okay?" He shot her a smile before going back to fighting.
"Yes, but we have to get out of here!"
"Get the gun, and point it at the deck."
Leia did as she was told pointing the giant gun at the deck before returning to Luke who had grabbed onto a piece of rope. He held onto her and fired the gun before swinging back to the smaller boat.
"Let's go and don't forget R2 he jumped off so he should be around here." They picked up the droid before flying off.
Luke leaned against the railing taking a deep breath while the giant ship behind them went down. He looked over to Din. "Thanks for having my back."
Leia went over to Han and kissed him as the ship exploded.
"That's Leia kissing me right?"
"Yes, you idiot." She gently caressed his cheek. "Are you okay?"
"Yes, my sight is getting better."
Luke hurried over to him kneeling next to the princess. "That's good news! I was scared that you might have some lasting damage."
Han rubbed his eyes and blinked a few times seeing everything a bit blurred. "Are you not wearing a shirt?"
"Eh, long story." Luke chuckled. "Oh, on that topic, do you guys mind if we make a quick stop?"
"Sure where?" Lando looked at him just glad he didn't die back there.
"Jabba's palace."
"Kid, we just got out of there." Han looked at him like he was crazy.
"I know just drop me off. I have something to get from there."
"Luke-" Leia wanted to interject.
"I'll go with him." Din put a hand on his shoulder. "There shouldn't really be many guards left there. They all sort of crashed."
She sighed. "Okay, but you have 30 minutes or we will storm the palace with the rebels."
"Deal."
They sat Din and Luke down. "What are we doing here, Luke?"
"I am getting the slaves out of here. Who knows when the next Hutt will come here or who it will be. I am not leaving them behind."
"I don't know if that's a good idea. There-"
Luke turned to him. "Respectfully I don't care. I will not leave them here just to be sold again." He went inside, the Mandalorian following him. There were only a few guards who disbursed when he told them Jabba was dead and to not fight him. There were a few stubborn ones who left when Din pointed his blaster at them.
The Jedi stepped into the Slaves' quarters. He didn't quite know what to say. "I am here to free you and get you out."
They looked at him confused especially because he was still dressed like a slave and had a bounty hunter standing behind him. That was until he drew his lightsaber.
"Stand back." He quickly cut the chains with which they had all been tied to the floor. "I am with the rebellion. We will provide you with clothes and credits for a new start in life. If you do not wish to come with me. You can leave as you are free now. No one will make choices for you anymore." He waited for a second until he made sure they all digested what he just said. "Is this everyone or are there still others left?"
"We're everyone, sir." A petite Twi'lek woman got up and took his hand. "Thank you."
"Now let's get you all out of here."
"What about Jabba?"
"Jabba is dead."
He went outside with them smiling as he saw a few happily feel the sun on their skin. Everyone had gone with him because they didn't quite know where to go. Before Leia got time to worry he called her to pick them up with the falcon. When she stepped out, now back in her regular clothes, she looked perplexed.
Luke smiled at her. "Got some room for more passengers?"
"Sure?"
Luke helped them all inside and looked at Din who stood in front of the ship but did not come inside. "You're leaving again, huh?"
"Yes, my ship is just a bit further from here."
The Jedi smiled. "I bet we'll meet again." He stepped closer to him and kissed the top of his helmet surprising the Mandalorian. "Stay safe."
Din watched him leave still overwhelmed until he yelled after him. "You too."
Luke chuckled and they took off. He went to the cockpit. "Thanks for the pick-up, Chewie!" He looked at Han who was a bit pissed he couldn't see enough to fly. "Good thing you're not flying yet."
"Who are your new friends, kid?"
"Let's say, old colleagues." He smiled and pat the other on the shoulder. "I should probably get back to them." He went to them and helped Leia to hand out some water and rations, before pulling her aside. "Oh, I told them, we would get them something starting money and clothes."
"You could've talked to me about this before." She sighed. "But of course, we can get that for them. This was important to you right?"
"Yes."
"You're a good person. Where's Din?"
"He left." He smiled a bit sad but with their track record, they would probably meet again. "I should probably go back to the group, and ask if they need help." With that, he left.
Leia watched him leave knowing full well that he was infatuated with him and it was tragic seeing them always separate. But nonetheless, they had more important things to worry about, the empire.
Notes:
A bit of a longer one, also are you guys ready for some Grogu and finally sticking together?
Chapter Text
Din was on the bridge having set Grogu down and drawn his blaster as the dark trooper started pounding against the door. His friends had done the same. This was bad, really bad. They had no chance of winning but he couldn't back down. He had to protect the child no matter the cost. The ship's alarm went off again as a ship approached.
"An X-wing." Bo Katan spoke up, looking out the window.
"One x-wing, great we're saved," Cara commented sarcastically as the other tried to get the x-wing to identify itself but no one answered.
Din went over to look at the cameras as the dark troopers stopped pounding against the door. He was confused but still anxious about what they were supposed to do. There was no way one person could get to them through all those machines.
Fennec seemed just as confused. "Why did they stop?"
Din watched the dark troopers turn around on the cameras.
"A Jedi?" Bo Katan watched someone absolutely destroy their enemies on the cameras.
This caught the Mandalorian's attention. If it really was a Jedi maybe they could get them out. Maybe it was Ahsoka who had changed her mind.
During the confusion, Moff Gideon took the chance and grabbed a blaster shooting at Bo Katan before aiming it at the child. Din managed to throw himself between the shoots and him. Luckily Mandalorian's armor was tough.
Seeing as a Jedi was coming his way and seeing no way out for himself Moff Gideon tried to shoot himself before Cara knocked him out.
Din watched Grogu looking at the screen seeing the Jedi make their way towards them. He watched him get into the elevator towards him after fighting his way to the top. When he saw them crush the dark trooper with his hand he was absolutely positive that the child would be okay. It was impressive. He picked Grogu up and told the others to open the doors. When they wouldn't he did it himself.
He watched the man come in, putting his lightsaber away and taking off his hood. "Luke?"
"Oh- Din!" The Jedi smiled widely as he hadn't seen the other in years. "I- the child called me. I didn't know you were with him!"
"That was definitely not disappointing."
"Oh, you remember." Luke chuckled.
Grogu looked at him curiously before looking back at Din.
Luke wanted to hold back and be a professional but he hugged his old friend. "I- kr- are you alright? I don't know what to say. I was hoping I'd see you again but-" He noticed the Mandalorian's friends stare at him and backed away. "I mean-"
"Right, Grogu." Din picked up the child. "It's time for you to be with your kind."
"I don't think he wants to leave you." Luke put his hand on his shoulder. "Come with us, at least to help him adjust."
"Doesn't your X-wing only fit one person?"
"We can fit, it might be a bit tight and snug but we'll manage." He hoped he would come with him.
"But-"
"Just go with him." Cara joined the conversation seeing them fumble around like teenagers with a crush. "This is what you wanted for the kid and it looks like you two are friends so even better."
"Okay." He looked back to the others. "Are you going to be okay?"
"Of course," Cara answered, smiling. "Now go."
Luke held out his hand like Din had done for him and waited for him to take it. "Come on."
Din took it and left with him to the elevator still holding Grogu close. He had missed him, missed his smile. Maybe he should have stayed but if he did he would have never met the child.
"Now, how have you been?" Luke beamed at him. "I haven't seen you in what five years?"
"Yeah, it's been a while. I've been alright, the usual bounty hunting business. Well, until recently." He looked at Grogu. "What about you? I heard about the empire and everything. That was you right?"
"Yeah, that was us." Luke chuckled scratching his neck. He didn't really like talking about it and was glad when they arrived at the X-wing. "Let's see how we'll fit." He climbed up into it taking Grogu and extending his hand to Din. "Hope you're okay with sitting in my lap." He joked.
Din took his hand and all three of them squeezed into the X-wing. It really was snug and he did not expect to be literally sitting between his legs when they met again. He held Grogu in his lap as the child tried to play with Luke's cape. "Sorry, he's a bit of a handful."
Luke chuckled. He was running on minimal sleep keeping up with his nephew and trying to keep him out of trouble. "He's gonna fit right in." He took off to Chandrilla. "Maybe he'll be friends with my nephew."
"Wait, you have siblings?"
"Oh, yeah, see turns out Leia is my sister! We found out a bit after you left and she and Han got married and well, they had little Ben."
"Man, this Galaxy is small."
"I know right? Like what is the coincidence of you being Grogu's dad and him contacting me." He paused. "You know you could've called me."
"Yeah, I lost my communicator, bounty situation."
"Well, then let's get you a new one." He looked at the man sitting between his legs smiling. "Tell me about some of your bounties. You know like that night we sat together at the rebel fleet."
"Okay." Din recounted some stories like the mudhorn story when they arrived at the planet's capital. He got out taking Grogu in his arms and helping Luke out.
The Jedi thanked him. "Come on let me show you my apartment." He walked him over to it, opening the door to R2D2 beeping at him. He had just left on a whim, as soon as he got the message. Leia was probably worried sick as he was supposed to teach today. He let the two in, the child playing with the droid. "Make yourselves at home. I'll show you the guest rooms." He showed Din the room he would be staying in before showing him a children's room that he had furnished for when Ben stayed over. "You must have been through a lot today, can I get you anything?"
"Do you have something to drink for Grogu?"
"Yeah." Luke went and got the kid some orange juice before finding his communicator go off. He had left it here in a hurry. "That's probably Leia. I should take that sorry." He took the call.
"Where are you?!" She seemed really worried. "Are you okay? Do-"
"I'm okay and home. Leia, I picked up a youngling. If you want to we can talk more tomorrow but it's late right now. I'm sorry for not calling you back earlier I just got home and I forgot my communicator.'
"Okay, we're coming over for dinner tomorrow then." She paused. "You scared us. But I am glad you're okay."
"Sorry."
"It's alright. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Yeah see you." He hung up. "Sorry, now where were we? Right, let me show you the rest of the apartment." He showed him around. "As I said make yourself at home." He smiled. "If you need anything just say so."
"Thank you."
"You don't need to thank me, not after everything you did for me." He took his hand. "I missed you."
"I missed you, too." Din smiled to himself. "Do you mind if I take a quick shower?"
"Not at all. There are towels in the cupboard under the sink."
He went into the bathroom and got out of his armor. Letting the cold water run over his body he thought about how they always met again and again. He wasn't sure if it was still coincidence or something else. When he stepped back outside, all dressed again he didn't see Grogu and Luke in the living room. Immediately he went into panic mode, not knowing where the child was. He hurried through the house when he saw one of the guest rooms open and the Jedi kneeling next to the kid's bed. He was humming some melody while tugging Grogu in. Seeing him interact with the child made his knees feel weak, especially when the other turned around to him and shot him a bright smile before getting up and walking over to him.
"He got tired so I tucked him in. I hope that's okay." His voice was low as he didn't want the wake Grogu.
Din just nodded.
Luke took his hand and pulled him outside before closing the door behind him. "Now, we have some catching up to do." He went to the kitchen to pour himself a drink. "I would offer you a drink, but Mandalorian, right?"
"It's alright."
He sat down with him taking a sip from his beverage. "So, tell me all about who Din, is now. Still the morally grey caring, sweet Mandalorian or did anything change." He grinned while looking at him and making himself comfortable on his couch.
"Not much changed in my life except for the kid."
"Right! How did that happen?" He chuckled.
Din told him about how he met Grogu and what they have been through. "So, I had to get him to back to his kind."
"Seems like you're his kind though."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, you're sort of his guardian and you mean a great deal to him." He smiled putting his hand on Din's. "And I think he means just as much to you."
"I don't-" Din didn't quite know how to react to that. It was true, he cared for the child deeply and wanted to keep him happy and from all harm. But that was normal right? It was a child after all and a really lovable one at that. But luckily he didn't need to answer as Luke kept talking.
"But anyway, so you and that Shrimp village lady, huh?"
"What about her?"
"Oh, come on Din, she was totally crushing on you! There is no doubt about it." He nudged him feeling a sting deep inside him but ignored it. "I mean, awesome Mandalorian Bachelor with a knack for kids who could kick your ass. Who wouldn't fawn over that?"
"That's not really- I mean even if she was interested I don't do relationships." Din was a bit overwhelmed hearing him talk about him like that.
Luke smiled and sighed. "Not a commitment guy, huh?"
"That's not it." Din paused. "Hold on a second, why are we talking about my love life?"
"Maybe I'm just interested in it." Luke shrugged playing coy. He was indeed interested in him because since seeing him again he got reminded of his huge crush on him and how he had been pining after him. "I mean it's been five years, thought maybe you had a Mrs. Or Mr. Mandalorian." He really hoped the answer was no.
"No," Din questioned what he meant with interested in it. "Well, you wanna talk about stuff like this why don't you tell me about yourself." He tried to steer the situation away from himself which worked.
Luke let out a deep sigh and leaned against him. "No luck. I actually dated a lot but nothing stuck. Guess I have too much baggage. Oh, but you remember Lando? We were together for a while, actually, but thought we were better as friends. There were a lot more but like I said nothing that worked out." He took another sip of his drink. "I think I am just doomed to be single."
"There'll be someone. I mean you're intelligent and handsome. Maybe they are intimidated by you?" Din nudged him not understanding why someone would not want to date him. He was a catch, kind, beautiful, and smart.
"Are you intimidated by me?"
"I-" Din paused not knowing why he was asking him that but decided to answer anyway. "No, who knows maybe I could even beat you in a fight. But even if I couldn't I think it's great."
"Beat me in a fight?" Luke smiled at him. "I'd like that."
"I did get the dark saber. So I could use someone to teach me."
"Sounds like a deal. I'll teach you and I get to keep you here a bit longer this time." He liked the idea of having him stick around. "I'd like to stick together just a smidge longer this time."
Din didn't quite know how to react again. He would love to stay with him, to be able to look after him and Grogu but he shouldn't. "I don't think I should. This isn't my place and-" He was surprised when the Jedi grabbed both of his hands staring straight at him.
"Call it what you want but it can't be a coincidence that we keep meeting. Maybe it's fate if you want to believe in that but no matter why I want you around! This can be yours and Grogu's place." Luke couldn't let him leave again, not after everything. After five long years of being apart, he finally had the courage to ask him to stay. "I know you have your whole Mandalorian code and all and I respect you and it but does it really keep you from staying? You could always still leave and do bounties and just come back here. I can get you an apartment and you could stay there with Grogu if you don't want to be roommates. Just- I want you in my life, Din. I don't want to go no contact for another three or five years. Please, stay."
"Luke-" The Mandalorian just stared at him. He was overwhelmed and confused at his sudden tonal change. Had he always wanted him to stay? He had always assumed that he should leave but hearing him spill his guts out made him rethink everything. It wasn't that he didn't want to stay he did but it scared him how much he cared for him and that even after all these years apart he still made his heart flutter.
"Sorry-" Luke got up abruptly. "I must have had too much to drink." He avoided the other's gaze. "You-" Another pause. "I should go to sleep. I have work tomorrow, excuse me." He hurried into his bedroom and leaned against the closed door sinking to the ground. Why did he say that? It was stupid! How did he let all that spill out? He buried his head in his knees. Now the other was probably weirded out by him but he just wanted him to stay, wanted him to hold him again. He wanted him to make him feel safe and hear all his stupid stories. After all the pining he was tired of being careful, of all the tip-toe. He said too much and overflowed. Why was he so bad at relationships? Either he was too much and scared them away or he was too reclusive tensing up at their touches. He got up and climbed into his bed hiding under his blanket.
Din looked after him. He knew he only had one glass. Did he make him uncomfortable? Maybe staying here was a bad idea but the Jedi seemed so insistent that he'd stay. He was confused and let himself fall down on the sofa. Why was everything so different but still so familiar? Had he changed? Or had it been Grogu coming into the equation? No matter what it was he felt defeated. Maybe it was him pining after the other and wanting to hold and kiss him. Did the Jedi notice that he was crushing on him? Had his feelings finally spilled over and ruined things? He eventually got up and went to bed, but he couldn't sleep. So only wearing his pants and the helmet he stepped outside to get something to drink but ran into the other almost knocking him over.
Luke hadn't realized what was going on as he grabbed onto the Mandalorian's shoulder trying not to hit the ground. He looked up at him his face getting beet red and feeling the other's arm around his waist holding him up. "Sorry-"
"Sorry, I didn't see you. I should be more careful. Are you alright, mesh'la?" It slipped his tongue like five years ago but looking down at him in his arms made his heart flutter all over again.
The Jedi stared at him, trying to catch his breath. "I-" He felt his knees become weak. "Yes, thank you."
For just a moment too long they stayed like this until Din pulled him up. "Can't sleep?"
"No, you?"
"No."
There was an awkward silence again as Luke looked away. "I'm going to go to the balcony. Hope you get some rest, you had a long day." He hurried past him.
Din couldn't help but look after him yet again. Had he always been so nervous around him? He got himself a glass of water and looked at him outside staring at the night sky. After that speech, he couldn't just leave him without an answer especially because he was scared he had upset him. He stepped outside next to him. "Mind if I join you?"
"No." Luke didn't really look at him still feeling awful for dumping all of that on him.
"I would like to stay."
"What?" He looked at him baffled because he had expected him to leave as quickly as he came over again.
"I mean if the offer still stands and wasn't just some drunk rambling." Din joked. "It would be great for the kid." Maybe he was just hiding behind his ways of life to avoid getting closer and maybe falling harder for the Jedi. One day he would wear his heart on his sleeve but for now, he would just stick around.
Luke couldn't help the smile spreading across. He didn't quite know how to react but just moved a bit closer to the other. "That definitely wasn't just drunk ramblings."
"Good." Din smiled to himself as he looked at his new roommate. Maybe this was what he needed, a break from his work and everything for a while.
"Great." Luke couldn't help but feel all giddy inside at the idea of him staying with him. He took his hand. "You should go to sleep. I will see you tomorrow after work."
"Okay."

Chapter Text
Luke woke up the next day stumbling out of his bed. It was way too early and he hadn't gotten enough sleep. Still groggy he took his medication and made his way into the kitchen when Grogu ran into him. Right, he had forgotten his new roommates. "Hey, there." He smiled at him, picking him up. "What are you doing up already?" Carrying him into the kitchen with him he ran into Din who was cooking. Kriff, he looked good standing in his kitchen and cooking in casual clothes. After watching him for a few seconds he moved closer to him. "What's cooking good-looking?" He joked but immediately regretted it scared Din might find it weird.
The Mandalorian turned around seeing him hold the child as it played with his hair and he felt his heart flutter. Wearing a helmet had its perks especially when he had a terrible poker face without it. "I hope you like scrambled eggs."
"Oh, I-" Luke was a bit surprised that the other made him breakfast. It was sweet especially because he normally only had a coffee. "Thank you." He sat Grogu down at the table before sitting down himself and going over his notes for class.
When Din finished up he put two plates in front of them. This was weirdly domestic and even more strange was that he didn't mind it. He watched Grogu dig into the food happily. This was worth it all the trouble he went through was worth it seeing him happy and safe.
The Jedi tiredly ate some of it. He couldn't help but smile. "Thanks, didn't know you could cook." He let his hand run through his hair pushing it out of his face. It had gotten longer and he wanted to get it cut but he hadn't found any time yet.
"I picked some stuff up since I've been traveling with the kid."
"That's sweet." Luke looked up at him. "By the way why are you awake already?"
"I always get up early."
"Oh okay, I also thought that maybe I could take the next two weeks off to focus on Grogu." He got interrupted by a yawn. "I think it would be nice for me to get to know him more before introducing him to the class."
"That sounds good, mesh'la."
Grogu made some happy noises seeming to agree.
"He seems to like you."
"It's probably just the hair." Luke joked and poured the kid some more to drink. "My sister wants to come over for dinner tonight. I hope you don't mind. But if you do I can always cancel."
"Don't, this is your home."
"It's yours now, too and I want you two to feel at home here. So if something ever bothers you don't hesitate to tell me."
"Okay, still I don't mind her coming over."
"Great, then Grogu can meet Ben, too!" Luke smiled at the child. "You two will make great friends. He's a little unruly but a good kid." He finished his breakfast before getting up and turning back to Din. "Thank you again for making breakfast. You're too kind."
The Mandalorian watched him disappear into the bathroom. Meeting the others again after five years? Having been together with the Jedi was already overwhelming enough for him. The last time he met them he had helped rescue Han and the slaves. He wondered what happened with them and if everything still affected the Jedi because he had seemed so much more comfortable with himself and confident. It made Din happy to see him like that.
Luke came back out dressed and ready to go. He was wearing black head-to-toe like when he had rescued Din. The Mandalorian noticed how he seemed to cover everything up to his neck, even his sleepwear covered everything. It seemed a bit strange but by God if he didn't look incredibly attractive in the outfit.
"I'm off to work now." He grabbed his notes and tossed Din a key and a holocom. "Those are my spare keys, if you want to explore the city just remember to lock up." He smiled at them and gave Grogu a small wave. "I'll be back around the afternoon but if you need anything feel free to contact me. See you later!" He left with R2D2, much to Din's delight.
The Mandalorian hadn't really minded it being there with Luke around but he still didn't really trust it. His gaze shifted to Grogu thinking about what to do now. He had already eaten before the other two woke up. Not having to go anywhere or being hunted made him antsy. This seemed too calm and he did not like it. The child cooed at him gaining his attention back. "What do you want to do, buddy?" Another noise. "I wish I could do the mind communication thing." He went over to him cleaning up his plate. "Maybe we can go outside for a bit?" Another noise this time a bit happier. "I think that's a yes. Let me get dressed."
After getting ready he found the child waddling through the apartment looking at everything and trying to get into Luke's room. Quickly but carefully he picked him up. "That's not for you, buddy." The child seemed annoyed but he couldn't just let him invade the other's privacy like that, especially after being allowed to stay here. "Let's leave the room alone and go outside."
He opened the door still holding the child. It was nice and warm while not being unbearably hot. Seeing the busy city made him a bit uncomfortable mostly because he was scared the child might get hurt. Nevertheless, he locked the door behind him and went for a small walk. Some people looked at him confused especially as he walked back to Luke's apartment and started to unlock the door. He just prayed that no one would talk to him and luckily no one did. When he came home he started cooking lunch from them, making a bit more in case the Jedi wanted to eat something too.
After finishing he gave Grogu his plate before going into another room to eat. When he came back out he saw the child still eating so he sat down watching him. "I hope you like it here. It would be very good for you to stay here. Luke is a good guy." Grogu didn't really pay attention to what he was saying as he finished up his meal.
Din did the dishes as the Jedi came back home. Luke kicked off his boots. "Hey, I'm back." He made his way over to them smiling at the Mandalorian. "Need a hand?"
"Oh, hey." The Mandalorian turned around. "Did you eat yet? Because I made lunch for Grogu and there's still some left." He finished up the dishes.
The Jedi chuckled. "You are too nice." He leaned against the kitchen counter looking up at him. "I appreciate it."
"No problem, mesh'la."
"So-" He drew out the word. "Did you two have a good day?" The child cooed happily which answered his question. "That's good to hear. Maybe we could go shopping tomorrow and get you two all the stuff you need like a change of clothes. I mean you didn't really bring any suitcases."
"That sounds like a good idea."
"Perfect!" Luke stretched his arms a bit tired from work and ate some of the food Din had made. "It's a wonder you even managed to make something like this with the limited stuff I had here. I really need to buy some groceries. Sorry, I never really cook for myself so."He chuckled a bit awkwardly and finished up. "Thank you again." Maybe now Leia wouldn't chastise him about not eating enough. Kriff, he still had to clean. He got up quickly. "Sorry I should have probably tidied up my apartment before you two arrived. I should do that now."
"We've been living on my ship I think your apartment is leagues cleaner." Din shrugged and watched Grogu play with the droid. He might not trust it but if the Jedi did maybe he should try.
Luke put away all his clothes that he had thrown in the corner putting them in the laundry basket. He hurried around finding empty bottles under the sofa and discreetly hiding them away in hopes Din didn't see because he didn't want him to think he was an alcoholic or something. To be fair he had found some comfort in drinking but it hadn't been out of control. He drank on the weekends or a glass in the evening but never to the extent where it would impact his day-to-day life. There was something calming about his mind shutting up, especially when your dead dad or dead teacher tried to contact you from time to time. Having the force ghosts as guidance was great but they were a lot sometimes.
After finding out what his father had done, including order 66 he had given him the silent treatment for at least half a year. Forgiving him for cutting off his hand was one thing but for killing 30 or something children and blowing up a whole planet was a different and harder task. He still wasn't sure if he could forgive him but he was working on it not ignoring him anymore.
He got the vacuum out and got to work watching Din talk to the child out of the corner of his eye. Kriff, he was so soft with him. It reminded him of when he held him in Jabba's palace and comforted him. After everything he was almost thankful for his past in a weird fucked up way because without it he might have never met him and ended up where he was now. He didn't even notice himself staring until the other looked at him. Startled he quickly turned away feeling his face get red. Stupid! Get your shit together, Skywalker. Stop it. He cursed himself for crushing on him. After all those years apart why couldn't he have stopped pining? He quickly finished up and put the vacuum away. "Okay, perfect. I think-" The doorbell interrupted him. "Oh, they're early."
When he opened the door he almost got run over by his nephew. Quickly he scooped him up in his arms giving him a big hug. "Hey, there!" He chuckled a bright smile painting his face.
"I can walk-"
"I know but I missed you."
Ben chuckled clearly happy to see him too despite his fake protest.
"Are you not gonna welcome in your dear brother-in-law and sister?" Han leaned against the door frame. But was immediately pulled into a hug by the other after he had sat the child down.
Leia also got pulled into a hug. She took his face into her hands afterward. "You got to stop scaring us and just going MIA!" Her stern look morphed into a soft smile. "So, where's your new student?"
"Oh right! You will not believe what happened."
"Oh god-" She feared the worst until her brother pulled them in and her gaze fell onto the Mandalorian holding Grogu. It took her a moment mostly because the other's armor was different. "Din?"
Han looked passed her his interest peaked to see if it was him.
"Can you believe it? What is the chance of him being the child's guardian?" Luke paused. "Oh right! Meet Grogu." He motioned to him.
Din had watched everything thoroughly overwhelmed but when he saw the Jedi greeting his nephew his heart felt warm. "Hello."
Han hit him against the back, being snarky. "So you went from bounty hunter to father?"
"What about you?"
Luke chuckled. It just reminded him of all those years ago.
"Come on let's sit down." Leia smiled pushing her husband to the dinner table. "I brought food and we better eat it before it gets cold."
Ben eyed the Mandalorian and the child interested, before speaking up. "So you and my uncle know each other? How did you two meet?"
Before Din could even think of an answer the Jedi interrupted him. "Well, you remember when I told you about my life on my aunt and uncle's farm? I eventually left to join the rebellion with your mother and father and met Din on the way."
It clicked and he decided to go with the story. Din nodded. It made sense if he was in his situation he wouldn't want him to know about his past either. "Yeah."
"I hope I can go visit the farm with you someday." Ben beamed at his uncle.
Luke smiled back but the Mandalorian could clearly see the pain behind it. "Maybe, one day."
"Can I sleep over here tonight? Please." The child dragged the last word out giving him puppy eyes.
"Sorry, your room is kind of occupied at the moment." He looked at him apologetically.
Leia just cut into the conversation. "Oh, also don't you remember that we wanted to go to visit Lando tomorrow?"
"Oh, right." Ben seemed disappointed.
They finished eating and Ben asked to go play with Grogu. Din didn't know if it was a good idea but the Jedi just gently nudged him and nodded. He agreed and looked after them as they went into the kid's room. Luke got out some glasses. "Drinks anyone?"
"Yes, please," Leia answered and her husband agreed. "Let's catch up."
The Mandalorian got nervous again preparing himself for the questions.
"So, are you sticking around for a bit this time?" She looked at him. The whole meeting and splitting up thing was getting exhausting because every time she thought this had been it the two ran into each other again. It wasn't that she didn't like the Mandalorian she actually thought he was quite nice and kind but the way he and her brother danced around each other growing closer but never too close was getting on her nerves more than the senate.
Din didn't quite know what to say. Sure he agreed to stick around but he still didn't know for how long. So he just nodded. "Yeah, the child needs some time to adjust."
"That's good." She leaned back a bit. "Now tell us how did you meet the child."
He recounted the story but couldn't help noticing how intently the Jedi listened to him despite already knowing the story. It was a bit odd nonetheless it made him feel a tad giddy.
Luke might have already heard the story but he liked listening to him talk. His voice even coming through the helmet just sounded so lovely. He watched his hands move the slightest bit while talking about it. The whole time he just smiled. This was great this was calm and safe.
"Man, you have a knack for rescuing Jedis, huh?" Han commented after the Mandalorian finished his story.
Luke couldn't help but think of all the kindness the other has showed him and how he had indeed saved him multiple times.
"Thought you were a Bounty hunter." The former smuggler went on. "Sounds like that might be bad for business." He joked.
"The people that gave me the job are now either dead or in jail so I don't think that's a problem. The bridge I burned with Jabba also doesn't matter anymore since he is also dead."
Luke hated that he was somewhat happy that Jabba was dead. It felt wrong to be but also he hated him, anyone, who was involved in his past and what happened to him. Knowing that the last thing he saw was his sister choking him out with a chain gave him some closure. Though he wondered who had taken over the palace now.
"That sounds cold but in context, it's a good thing." Han took a sip of his drink. "I mean wanting to hurt a child definitely deserves jail at the minimum. If anyone hurt my son I would personally make sure they regret it. Plus Jabba deserved what got to him too with how he treated Luke." He put an arm around the Jedi. "No one hurts my brother-in-law."
"Yeah?" Luke chuckled. "Remember that one-time drinking before you and Leia got together?" He teased.
Han immediately got red and Din wondered what he meant. "What happened?"
"Well-" Luke started and Han wanted to interrupt him but Leia held his mouth close enjoying her husband's distress. "Let's say Leia's not the only one he really got to know." He nudged him. "Guess we both had a weakness for morally grey scruffy looking people."
Han moved his wife's hand away. "Hey, what do you mean with scruffy looking?"
"Oh-" Din caught on. "Really? Him?"
"Hey, what do you mean with that?!" The former smuggler snapped toward him his wife just laughing.
"I mean, Lando I get. He's on a similar league but-" He cut himself off feeling like he probably shouldn't continue.
Han just wanted to protest but Luke answered first. "Did you just indirectly call me hot?"
"What-"
"I'll take the compliment." He smiled at him sheepishly. "Even if it was by insulting Han."
Leia joined in. "I think that is the best way to compliment someone."
"Hey! On whose side are you anyways?" Her husband protested still bitter. "You married me!"
She gave him a kiss. "I mean-"
They teased each other a bit more while Luke turned to Din. "They truly are an old married couple." He nudged him. "Hope this isn't too awkward for you."
"No, not at all."
"Good." He beamed at him before emptying his glass and joining back in Leia's and Han's conversation. "Get a room."
Din watched them talk and banter amused. They sat together for a while longer until Leia got up. "It was so nice to see you again, Din. But it is late and we should probably get Ben home." She gave her brother a hug looking at him a bit more stern. "And you learn how to communicate. If I get another scare of you just being randomly gone like that again I am putting a GPS in you!"
"Hey! I had to save someone."
"Yeah, and I have to look after you. You're my brother not just some hero." Her stern look turned into a soft smile. "You just worry me sometimes."
"Sorry."
"It's okay. I love you."
"Love you too."
She went to get her son. Han gave the Mandalorian a pat on the back. "Congrats on being a father, buddy." He then looked at the Jedi. "Next time just call us. We would've come with you."
"Yeah."
Din felt a bit weird being called a father but didn't say anything else. He watched the three leave Ben waving goodbye to them especially Grogu who was now expectedly looking up at the Mandalorian. Picking him up he couldn't help but replay being called father and it made him feel warm. He wouldn't have intentionally made the decision to become one but he liked it and truly cared for the child. It seemed like fate. Maybe he believed in it after all. As the Jedi said it couldn't just be a coincidence that they kept meeting and maybe it sounded cliché and corny but maybe they were meant to stick together. Him finding a Jedi child of all people seemed like it.
Luke closed the door behind his family. "I'll go do the dishes." He smiled and went up to his roommates. "Maybe this little bundle of joy should get some sleep too." His gaze fell onto the child.
"I'll tuck him in." Din went to the bedroom to put the protesting child to sleep.
The Jedi pushed his sleeves up and took off the glove of his right hand. He let the water run and scrubbed the plates clean.
When the Mandalorian finally got Grogu to sleep he went back to Luke. He walked up to him seeing the exposed part of his arms. Scars adorned his skin. They almost looked like lightning and as if whatever caused them must have hurt a lot. Before he noticed he was staring the other caught and immediately pulled his sleeves down. "Sorry!"
"It's fine." Luke looked away and turned off the water just having finished. He didn't like how his body looked anymore, the way those scars made it look. On top of that, he didn't want Din to see them. "Just-" He paused. "I should put the Vodka bottle away. We don't want Grogu getting into it." Quickly he changed the topic and put the bottle in one of the higher cabinets. "Hope he went to sleep without a fuss." He plastered a smile on his face.
Din noticed it wasn't one of his usual ones. It looked more forced. So he decided to go with the topic change. "Yeah, I told him we were going out tomorrow and that he needed to sleep."
"Oh, speaking of tomorrow. I will also be gone tomorrow night after the whole shopping trip. I wanted to go drinking with Lando so you two have the apartment to yourselves."
"Okay."
There was a moment of silence between them until the Jedi broke it. "Do you want to watch a movie with me?"
"Sure." Din followed him back to the living room where Luke sat down next to him cross-legged his knee brushing against his leg. The awkward tension from before was gone which made him happy.
Luke couldn't help but steal a few glances at the other. The nagging feeling of worry that he saw his scars had settled deeper down again. Now only his pining remained—he liked sitting next to him having his leg brush against his. After all the time apart he still made him feel safe and he loved that.

Chapter Text
After breakfast, Luke took them into the city the sun shining down on them. This was going to be a good day. They went to a smaller shop together. Before he knew it Din got shoved into a changing room with clothes the Jedi gave him. Surprisingly he actually liked most of them, since they were casual, dark, and comfortable. A few were more flamboyant. But the rest were great. When he stepped out he saw Grogu in a small frog shirt. It was adorable. The child cooed at him apparently liking it.
"Did they fit? I hope I got what you like right." Luke beamed at him. "Though I must say I smuggled some of my personal touches in there."
"I noticed. But most of it actually fit quite well." Din wanted to go pay not caring much for shopping and being happy that it was over when the other stopped him.
The Jedi took the clothes he decided to buy and put them on the counter before turning back to his companion. "It's my treat."
"You don't-"
"Din, please, it's the least I can do after everything you did for me." He got Grogu's things as well after the child had changed back into his original outfit.
"I told you before you don't need to repay me."
"But I want to. Please."
"Okay, thank you."
Luke went to pay for their things before they headed out. "Now let's get groceries. My apartment is on the way so we can put the clothes away on the way." Without thinking he grabbed Din's hand pulling him along. When he realized he got flustered but just kept holding it thinking it would be less awkward to just go with it instead of drawing unnecessary attention to his action. But the way the other's fingers had twitched inside his grip made him feel things. Maybe he was imagining it but he thought their hands fit so well together.
Din was surprised but just let him hold his hand, liking the feeling. There was something oddly familiar about it. It seemed as if this was how it was meant to be. Maybe he should have stayed. What would have happened then? While the thoughts ran through his head and Grogu played with his helmet they arrived at the other's apartment. The child immediately went back to annoying the droid. As much as he was worried about his safety seeing Grogu so carefree and happy made his heart melt especially because the Jedi was still holding his hand. They went to put the clothes away before going back to the living room.
"Okay, groceries!" Luke picked up Grogu who was about to protest at the interruption but got distracted he saw the Jedi's necklace. He immediately started playing with it. Din got worried the other would mind and wanted to gently tell the child to knock it off but his heart almost stopped when the Jedi just laughed softly.
Luke just let the kid play with his necklace, which had actually been one of his late mother's that Leia and he had found when looking into their family. Of course, he cared about it but if what he read and heard about her was true she wouldn't mind Grogu playing with it. On top of that, it was adorable. He just watched him for a bit before turning his attention to the Mandalorian, smiling at him. "Ready?"
Din needed a minute to collect his thoughts. "Yes." He was so happy he wore the helmet right now because he couldn't help staring at the other. "Let's go."
The Jedi went outside with him. He locked the door behind them before walking toward the store. "Oh, by the way, I talked to Leia, if you want your own place, there's this nice cozy apartment close to the school. Not to kick you out or anything, though! I would love for you to stay with me- eh- I mean I just thought maybe you'd like more privacy."
"It's fine. I don't mind staying with you. That is if you don't mind?'
"No! Not at all." Luke was glad the other was going to keep living with him. "I'd like that. I mean I like the company and Grogu could probably benefit from us all staying together too." He cursed himself for rambling again. But the good thing was he could always use the child as an excuse even if it made him sound like a divorcee negotiating custody. He felt the kid look at him slightly judging him but ignored it. "Sorry, I'm rambling."
"Did I make you uncomfortable?"
"No! Why would you think that?" Luke stopped walking looking at him confused.
Din couldn't help but be glad that it wasn't the case. "Oh, you told me before that you tend to talk a lot in awkward situations-"
"Oh-" The Jedi got flustered at how much the other seemed to have remembered about their meetings. It seemed so genuine and as if he was truly interested in him. He felt a smile forming on his face and a slight blush rising, turning his cheeks a subtle shade of pink. "I can't believe you remembered that."
"How could I not? You were probably one of the most outstanding things that happened to me. I mean life is pretty much the same normally. But aiding a rebellion and freeing a smuggler from Jabba are definitely memorable."
He nudged him playfully trying to hide how his crush on him just doubled. What he wouldn't give for a helmet of his own right now. The thought that he had been an outstanding memory in someone's life, someone he hasn't seen in five years made him finally understand the saying of giving someone butterflies. Quickly he picked up his pace a bit to hide his still blushing face.
When they arrived at the store he put Grogu in a shopping cart. The child enjoyed being pushed around in it. Luke grabbed his usual things, mostly consisting of instant meals as he wasn't one for cooking. He turned to Din. "Take whatever you need, I've got it covered."
The Mandalorian hasn't ever really been grocery shopping, mostly just getting ration bars for himself. But since he had picked up the kid he tried to at least provide him with better food. So he picked up some ingredients for easy meals while watching the Jedi stroll through the store and trying to get something from the top shelf when his sleeve dropped just a centimeter revealing a little bit of skin. His eyes fixated on the scars again as the other just used his powers to make the bottle levitate into the cart. It was fascinating. He had seen him use his powers before but it always surprised him just like when Grogu used them. The child in question was amused to see his new teacher use the force.
Luke smiled at him. Grogu was absolutely adorable and he couldn't help but make the other groceries float a bit to entertain him. Seeing him excited made him happy. Normally he tried to keep a low profile but this was worth it. Having to continue the shopping spree he stopped and went to the cash register with his new roommates. This all seemed so domestic and like they were a family. The thought made his heart skip a bit. He quickly paid and took the bags, being used to carrying his things alone when Din just grabbed most of them from him helping. "Thanks-" Luke beamed at him still being touched at how considered the other was.
"No problem." The Mandalorian knew he could probably manage but wanted to help anyways. They went back home to quickly store the groceries away.
Luke leaned against the kitchen counter. "Lando is picking me up in a bit. I don't know when I'll be back yet." He smiled. "I have some movies lying around in the living room if you want to watch something or some board games I play with Ben sometimes. So make yourself at home."
"Thank you." Din looked at the child for a second before looking back at him. "It's been a while since we haven't been moving all the time so this is still a bit strange. But I am sure we'll find something to do."
"Good." Luke stretched his arms out for a second before leaving to get ready. Shortly after he left with Lando.
The Mandalorian found some game for the child to play while he made dinner for them, still making a bit more just in case the Jedi was hungry when he got back. He watched Grogu eat and before he knew it the child was nestling against him on the couch while he read a book. Gently he pat his head as he dozed off.
Not wanting to wake Grogu he stayed like that for a long time until some time around midnight he brought him to bed. He tugged him in and watched him for just a few minutes to make sure he was alright. One day he wouldn't be able to watch over him and he hated the idea.
As the night went on he had gone back to reading not being able to sleep or at least that was the plan when his holocom rang. He picked up to hear music and other people talking.
"Din-" Luke dragged out the word chuckling softly. "Are you still awake?" He slurred his words together.
"Luke? Are you okay?"
"Yep, a-okay, that's me! You- Just wanted to hear your voice. It sounds so nice." The Jedi paused and could be heard talking with a person at the club before continuing to speak to the Mandalorian. "Hm, Lando left with someone and I am bored." There was another pause while he told some guy who tried to get his attention to buzz off. "I'd like to dance with you. Will you come dance with me?"
Din sighed almost being able to hear his begging face and puppy eyes through the phone.
"Please?"
"Where are you?"
The Jedi gave him his address and after making sure that Grogu would be safe with RD2D he walked to the club. When he got there he was a bit surprised that the place looked so shady having thought the other would choose a more upstanding place. It also worried him a bit. He wasn't really planning on going dancing with him. He just wanted to make sure he was okay and get him home safe because the thought of the Jedi walking through these streets alone and in this state made his stomach turn.
Luke found himself dancing with some stranger feeling his hands sneak under his shirt. For a short second, he wanted to push him away but in the end, he let him, not really caring. He enjoyed himself until he saw some guy harassing a girl. Getting angry he walked over there, leaving his dance partner a bit disappointed. "Hey, asshole! Leave her alone."
"Or what? You her boyfriend?"
"Does it matter? She told you to piss off, so do it."
"How about you go find your boyfriend and leave us alone?" The man grabbed the girl's wrist preparing to pull her away.
On closer inspection, the Jedi noticed that she looked pretty out of it, still desperately trying to get away. "Oh, that's it!" He punched the man straight in the face busting his lip open. The music blaring in his ears just pumped his adrenaline more as he got pushed against the wall.
"Bitch!"
He felt a fist make contact with his jaw, which was definitely gonna leave a bruise but now it was on. Quickly he let his knee shot up hitting him between the legs.
The man grabbed onto his jacket tipping it as he tried his best to keep upright. Before tumbling over he hit his head against the other making contact with his nose.
"That was my favorite jacket!" Luke hit him in the chest with his elbow finally making him fall to the ground. The taste of iron filled his mouth as he turned to the girl. "Are you okay? Do you have a friend or someone you can call? I'll wait with you for them to pick you up."
"Yeah, thank you."
Luckily for the. The club was always rowdy so no one really bat an eye when the fight broke out. He put an arm around her after asking if it was okay to help her stay steady. Still being really drunk himself he thanked his adrenaline because otherwise, he would have had a problem keeping them both steady. When they arrived outside he looked at her a bit worried. "Are you alright? Did he put something in your drink?"
"I don't know, I feel a bit dizzy." She paused and gestured to his nose. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, don't worry about me. I had worse." He showed her his cybernetic hand. "Make sure you get some water and your friend looks after you, in case he did put something in your drink."
"Are you like a bounty hunter or something?"
Luke chuckled. "No, just had a few fights. So, I know what I am doing."
"Ah, okay-" She was about to say more when her friend came hurrying over to her giving her a big hug.
"Oh, I was so worried!" The friend took a look at her before frowning. "Are you okay?" She helped her stand.
"Yes, thank you for coming."
"Come on let's get you home." She turned towards the Jedi. "Thanks for looking out for her."
"No problem. Take care!" He shot them a big smile before heading back inside and getting a drink and seeing the guy, he had beaten up, stumble outside.
Din had finally arrived at the club, looking around after a while found a group of friends who pointed him in the direction of his roommate. They had sounded a bit worried getting him even more on edge. He walked over there struggling to cut through the masses of people. He found the Jedi sitting at the bar with a bleeding nose and some bruises creeping up his jar.
"Luke?" Din walked over to him. He looked pretty drunk. "Are you okay?"
The Jedi turned towards him. "Din!" A big smile spread onto his face as he hugged the other. "You came."
"You look horrible. What happened?"
"Rude, you look horrible." He paused for a second. "Well, you don't but still!"
"Luke."
"Uh, authority me likey. You sound hot all serious like that." He placed a hand on his chest.
Din just sighed. "Come on let's go home."
"No! It's not even that late and I haven't drunk enough."
"It's one in the morning and you smell like a liquor store. I am gonna lead you outside now okay?"
"But I don't want to. Fight me!"
"Luke."
"Ah, there is it again!" Luke chuckled. "I love that."
Din carefully and softly put a hand on the other's bicep to get him out. He didn't want to startle him or make him feel unsafe. But when his demeanor didn't change he knew it was okay that he was touching him. "We're going home, now."
"But-" Luke stopped when he felt the Mandalorian pull him outside. The way he kept looking back at him to make sure he was okay and how his grasp was so gentle that he could easily break free made his heart flutter a bit.
When they arrived outside Din finally managed to get a good look at him under the streetlight. His lip was bleeding a bit too and his clothes had been ripped slightly. "Are you okay?"
"I'm okay, Din." Luke wiped away some of the blood. "You should see the other guy." He chuckled before looking away feeling him stare at him and even if he couldn't see his face his worried tone made him feel bad enough.
The Mandalorian cupped his face taking a good look at him. "Alright, you look pretty banged up but nothing we can't fix."
Luke swallowed hard. It was a bad idea to call him because the way he held his face made him crush even harder on him. A slight pink rose to his cheeks.
When Din realized their position he immediately backed off. "Sorry." He looked away feeling his eyes stare into him. "Let's get you home, okay?" He offered him his hand.
"Okay." The Jedi was still too flustered to argue. He just grabbed the hand interlacing their fingers and smiled to himself. While walking he moved a bit closer holding onto his arm with his free hand giving the excuse of being tipsy. Being like this made him happy.
Din didn't mind him being this close if he wasn't so worried about him he would be happy to have him this close. "If you need to slow down or anything just say so."
"I will. Thank you."
He brought him home where the Jedi collapsed on the couch. Watching him he got some water for him. "You should drink this."
"What is it?"
"Water."
"That's no fun. I've got some Vodka on the top shelf, you could get me that."
"No, you definitely had enough to drink. How much did you even drink?"
"I don't know? A lot of shots with Lando and a Bachelorette party. Uh, and they had these amazing cocktails, so like a lot?"
Din sighed before holding up the glass of water. "Come on, drink the water."
"Nope."
"Then let me at least fix up your face. Where's your first aid kit?"
"Bathroom."
Din went to get it seeing it needed to be restocked but there was luckily enough for him to use. Though it did worry him a bit thinking about the other hurt on his bathroom floor fixing himself up. He shook the thought off and went back to the living room to find his friend missing. Knowing where he went he put the kit down before going to the kitchen to see him pour down the Vodka. "Kriff." He took the bottle away from him.
"Hey!"
"Stop. How much did you drink of it?"
"Like half?"
"In the five minutes, I was gone?"
"Yep, that's gonna hit hard in a few minutes." Luke tried to grab the bottle back when the other put it on top of the shelf again. "Come on, Din." He whined.
"No." Din guided him back to the living room. "Now sit down and let me look at you."
"Okay." Luke sit down frowning but immediately got distracted when Din gently cleaned off the blood. It felt as if his insides were doing the Macarena. All his combativeness and sulking went away as he watched him take care of him. The way his fingers made even the slightest contact with his skin made him want to rip that helmet off and kiss him. He was way too drunk for this.
Din did his best to be careful not wanting to hurt him further. "What even happened?"
"Some guy-" Luke got interrupted by the sting of disinfectant as the other applied it to his bruised knuckles. "Some guy was harassing a girl. Probably drugged her too. I told him to knock it off but he didn't so I hit him. Like I said you should have seen him, guy stumbled out of the club. Anyways the girl got home safe and that's all that matters."
"Still, you're lucky he didn't break your nose or that your hand is mostly okay."
"He deserved it!"
"That's not what I mean. Next time use your elbow or the palm of your hand." Din paused for a second. "The guy sounds awful. He deserved to be beaten up. But you also deserve to be safe."
Luke felt his heart flutter. "You are too sweet." He couldn't help the smile creeping up his face when the other finished patching him up. Not wanting him to worry he drank the water.
"You should probably get some sleep."
"Can we maybe stay here for a bit?" He looked at him coyly patting the free space next to him on the sofa. "That is if you're not tired."
"Sure." Din sat down next to him and thought his heart stopped when his friend leaned against him cuddling up to him. It took him a few seconds to realize he needed to breathe.
"Thanks."
Not really knowing what to do he put his arm around him hearing him hum which just made his heart skip another beat. Was this okay? Was this a normal non-Mandalorian friendship thing? Probably. He shouldn't think too hard about it. But as they sat there he noticed how uncomfortable it must be to lean against his armor. So he gently pushed him away earning him a confused look. "Wait a second." He took off his chest plate and the armor on his arms before pulling him back against his chest. "Thought my armor wouldn't be really comfortable."
Luke beamed at him before nestling back against him feeling a blush creep onto his cheeks. It might be the alcohol but he felt warm and safe in his arm and leaning against his chest was definitely better, not only because it was more comfortable but also because he could feel his chest move up and down with his breaths. There was something so calming about it, about feeling his abs through the shirt and hearing his heartbeat. This felt so intimate and he didn't know if the other realized it too or if it was just him.
Din tried not to question the position just grabbing the book he had and reading again while the Jedi was partially lying on top of him. He was scared that this was too close, too much. All those years he was never good with relationships and if he was honest the other terrified him. Not because he was intimidated by him or anything but because getting too close meant opening up and it meant people getting hurt. He didn't want that for him. What if he was able to look straight through him and notice that he cared for him so deeply, that it wasn't the feelings of a friend anymore? What if he didn't care? What if he felt the same?
Before he could back off now worried to have overstepped a line he noticed the other had dozed up. "Kriff-" He breathed out, looking at him. After the eventful night, he looked so peaceful and calm. It was adorable. Gently he let his hand run through his hair. A smile spread onto his face. Not wanting to wake him he decided to just stay here for the night. "Sleep tight, mesh'la."

Chapter Text
The next day Luke woke up still cuddled against his roommate. Kriff, definitely drank too much last night. Noticing the other was probably still sleeping he smiled to himself and just stayed like this for a while longer. He was flustered and knew he should probably move but he just wanted to stay in this moment for a few more minutes. Feeling his chest slowly rise up and down and his arm around him made him feel safe. He wondered how he felt about him. If he made Din feel all warm and fuzzy too. He looked up at the helmet still smiling like an idiot.
"Luke?"
The Jedi jumped up startled that the other had been awake. His face turned a bright red. "Kriff! Din, you scared the shit out of me!" He looked away not being able to face him and moved further away.
"Sorry. Are you okay?" Din sat up too a bit worried. Was he sick from all the liquor he drank last night? Or was he blushing? The thought of Luke getting flustered over him made him smile. The other made him smile a lot and he hadn't minded staying all cuddled up as they did. But the way he was looking up at him as if he could see right through his helmet had made him melt.
Luke just chuckled seeing him worried about him. Oh, he was so stupid for acting like a love-struck teenager. "Yeah, I am fine. Sorry for yesterday. I shouldn't have called you."
"It's okay. I didn't mind. I am just glad you got back here safe. Why did you choose a joint like that to drink?"
"Well, with being a war hero comes people wanting to talk to you, especially about it." He looked away. He hated talking about what went down on that ship and all the pain it had caused him and others. "I don't really care for it, that's why I go there no one really cares or knows me. Some even hate my guts but that's a different story. Anyways I don't have to always wear my hood then and can show my face. Plus people seeing me drunkenly grind against some random guy isn't necessarily the Jedi image."
"Hate you?" Din tried to focus on that part and not on him grinding against random people and probably making out with them. Kriff, he wants Luke to do that to him.
"Yeah, mostly people who used to work for the empire and are now unemployed or have jobs that they think are beneath them. I get it. War is difficult. Having your entire life turned upside down isn't easy." He paused knowing excatly how much anxiety in can cause you to be put in an unknown environment and situation. "Oh, or people who still worship everything the empire stood for."
"Oh, I hope they don't give you any trouble."
"No, I am alright. They can't throw anything at me that I can't handle."
"That's good."
"Yeah."
There was some silence as they just looked at each other before Din got up from the sofa as well. "I should go make some breakfast for Grogu."
"Oh, oh- yeah! Right I should probably take a shower too!"
Luke smiled a bit awkwardly before turning around and leaving for the bathroom. Taking off his robe he let his fingers run over his scars. He hated them, hated that they will always remind him of how his father had watched him wither in pain before deciding to step in and how he died. It reminded him that he will never have a father, how he will never have the good relationship that he wanted with him after he found out. Because as long as he was alive there was still a chance that maybe after the whole rebellion thing was done they could repair their relationship. But now he is dead and even if he can talk to him sometimes it would never be the same.
He let the cold water run over his body. The only thing he could do now is live with it and he did. He wanted to leave his messed up past behind, the slavery, the death and the war. Maybe he could do that. He had his students to focus on and his little found family to care for. So he pushed his emotions back down. Maybe if he didn't acknowledge them they would leave? It had worked so far and he had always managed to gaslight himself into being okay(This actually works sorta, talking from experience).
Din heard the water running while making some breakfast for them. He liked this but they were getting too close. Maybe he should leave again. Grogu was in good hands with Luke and he didn't want to complicate things. But every fiber of his being screamed at him to stay, to keep both of them safe and to hold the jedi close. When he met Grogu he was overwhelmed with the same innate want to protect him as he was with Luke. With Grogu it made sense, he was a child anyone would do that. Plus having been an orphan himself it struck a cord with him.
But the Jedi was an anomaly. Maybe it was the way he looked at him or how he saw good in him even after he almost turned him over to the empire. He saw him as family and no matter how hard he tried he couldn't run away from it. But he needed to. It was better for him, for them both. Luke deserved the world, the universe and he would never be able to give it to him.
So he decided he would leave the next day.
When Luke got out of the shower he quickly got dressed before joining the others. He went to greet Grogu. "Hey there little guy!" A big smile spread over his face when the child cooed at him. "How about we see what you can do today?"
Din watched them and just got reassured that Grogu would be fine. "Luke can we maybe talk for a bit after breakfast?"
"Sure."
After the Jedi was done eating they went on the balcony. "So what's going on? Is something bothering you?"
"I need to leave soon. Grogu seems content here and I can't stick around forever."
"Oh-" Luke looked away. "I'm sorry. Was it yesterday? I majorly overstepped boundaries there and I am sorry. I promise I will not do that again, ever."
"It's not that. I just can't stick around like this forever and I thought it would be best for the kid if I left early rather than late."
"He needs you. You are his family, leaving would upset him." He desperately tried to reach out to him putting his hand on the other's. "You could do your jobs and come back here or-"
"Luke, that wouldn't work. You know that just as much as I do."
"Okay." The Jedi decided not to fight him on the decision as he knew it wasn't his to make even if it tore him apart inside. His heart was screaming at him to do something to tell him that maybe he needs him too but he didn't. "When are you going to leave?"
"Probably tomorrow. I got a good lead on a job." Din tried to ignore the change in the other's demeanour.
"If you need help getting your things, I can lend a hand."
"Oh, it's fine. Thank you."
The day seemed to go by too fast, Luke keeping his distance from his roommate focusing on the child. As night rolled around he just went to his room quickly not wanting to face the pain of being left again. He curled up against his pillow feeling like he was an anchor pulling everyone under with him until they eventually cut him loose. To be fair he couldn't blame them but he had hoped Din would be different, that he would stay .
Din noticed the other's behaviour and assumed he must have done something wrong. So he made sure to leave early tomorrow.
But when he was gone the next day and Luke found the child upset at his door he couldn't contain himself and ran after the Mandalorian.
"Din!" He arrived at the ship, the mandalorian had bought, just in time, catching his breath. "Wait! Please don't leave. Grogu needs you and I need you too."
"I care about you, that's why I need to leave and-"
Luke stood there staring up at him. The ship's engine blaring in his ears. "Show me that you really care! Please stay, even on my worst days. Tell me that your never gonna leave me again! I can't have you break down my walls and defences and just leave over and over again." He took a deep breath. "So, if you truly wanna leave, please never come back! I know it's selfish but I can't do this not again."
Din just wanted to answer when the Jedi walked closer.
"You don't let people in. I get it, believe me I do. But you stupid, kind, sweet, idiot, please I am begging you just let me in. You saved me, let me do the same for you!" Luke looked at the helmet not caring that he couldn't read his facial expressions anymore. "I know I am a lot. I have more baggage than most people and I still have things to work through but for kriffs sake give me a chance please. If you really cared for me even an ounce you would stay."
"Luke, that's unfair-"
"I know. I know it is, you don't want to stay and I am sorry. But please."
"No it's unfair because I want to stay but you're confusing me." Din closed the distance between them. "You are consistently showing up in my life as if we were meant to stick together and you're so persistent on thinking I am a good guy when I am not. You insist on saying I saved you when I almost killed you selling you out to the empire." He paused unsure how to formulate his next sentence. "I am no better than the people who traded you around like some piece of metal and-"
"Shut up." Luke rolled his eyes. "You are so kriffing dumb, I can't believe it. Stop blaming yourself for something you didn't even end up doing. Yeah, you could have handed me over to the empire but you didn't. Can't you see what I see?" During their conversation, he never stopped looking at that helmet, cursing it. He wasn't able to read his expressions. "Tell yourself you're a bad person all you want but you saved me. Not only that you saved Grogu. I don't care what else you did you're a kriffing angel! Just-" He sighed. "Look, I don't want to tie you to one place, that sucks, believe me I get it. But I mean it when I say I need you and don't want to loose you."
Din didn't answer but climbed down, just leaning his head against the other's and Luke felt his heart stop beating for a moment.

Chapter Text
Luke felt arms around him, and the smell of oil and metal filled his nose. Something he grew to love because it reminded him of Din. He made him feel safe, and without thinking, he buried his face in Din's shoulder and held on tight to him, scared that if he let go, he would leave.
He was so scared, scared to lose the person he really didn't want to lose.
Din just hugged him. I didn't really know why, but he just felt like he needed to. But that was when he heard the other sob and felt him shake. Thinking he did something wrong, he immediately tried to back up to push himself away.
"Don't -" Luke held on to him, clinging close. "Please, stay." He mumbled into the other's shoulder while sobbing.
"Okay." Din didn't really know what was going on, but he just held him tight. He gently pat his back and let his hand run through his hair. "Okay."
They stayed like that for a few minutes, the engine of the ship still roaring behind them. Luke finally loosened his grip and looked up at him, his eyes still watery. "Please, Din."
"Okay, I'll stay." Din brushed some tears away. He never wanted to make the other cry.
"You will?"
"Yes, I will stay with you and Grogu."
A bright smile spread onto Luke's face and he hugged him again. Din tried to remember if he had ever seen the other smile like this before. But he didn't. It was strange. But he wanted to see him smile like that more often. He wanted to be there for him, for Grogu every time.
"Thank you." Luke kissed the side of the other's helmet and held onto his hands. "I-" He paused. "I don't want to force you to stay here though. I-"
"You aren't, I want to."
Luke gave him that smile again. "Good!" He kept holding his hands just looking at him, well at his helmet. "But, eh- sorry, you probably have a job to go to!" He stepped back, letting go of his hands and placing his second house key in them. "I'll wait for you at home. Be safe!"
"You too." Din stepped further back putting distance between them. Home. He would be waiting for him. Something inside him stirred and Din couldn't help but smile stupidly. The other would be waiting for him. Waiting for him. There was something so weirdly warm about that thought. He climbed back onto his ship. "I'll be back I promise." He waved at him.
"You better be back soon. You wouldn't like to be on my bad side!" Luke shouted at him waving back. When he watched him take off he hit his face. "Ah, god damn it, Luke, get your shit together!" He turned around but still felt absolutely giddy. He definitely has a crush on him.
That evening Luke had cooled down and sat on the couch with Grogu sleeping next to him. He was dosing off as well when he heard the door open. It was Din who came back with some laser marks on his armor. "Hey, are you okay?" He tried to keep his voice as low as possible.
"Yes, nothing I couldn't handle." Din walked over to him to see Grogu sleeping leaning against his roommate.
"Join us?" Luke gestured to the empty space next to him.
"Sure." Din sat down only to have the other lean against him immediately. He liked this. Even if it wasn't a normal non-Mandalorian friendship thing he liked the other's closeness.
The next few weeks they fell into a rhythm of meeting at Luke's place in the evening after the Jedi was done with teaching the younglings and Din was done with his jobs. It had gotten strangely domestic to the point where Din would get up early to make the other and Grogu breakfast because he knew that Luke would just have some coffee otherwise.
Luke would always wait for the other on the couch holding Grogu until one day. One day when Luke's mental health was particularly low.

Chapter Text
Luke had found himself in the bathroom after a shower looking at his body. The body that was riddled with scars. Scars that always reminded him of everything. He hated it. Today, he felt particularly down about everything. But it was no use. He had things to do.
He got dressed and put on a smile, greeting his roommates with a bright face. "Well, Grogu ready for school?" He looked at the little gremlin who made happy noises at him before looking at Din. "You're at work today, right?"
"Yes, I'll probably only come back the day after tomorrow."
"Alright, I'll see you then!" He smiled and picked up Grogu and the little bag the other had packed. "You're having a sleepover with Ben, right?"
Happy noises again. "Then it looks like I have the house to myself." He chuckled even though he dreaded being alone. In the start, being alone was refreshing as he never used to be alone, but now it was more difficult than that.
That evening, he sat down and put on Din's shirt, thinking he wouldn't notice he just wanted something nice that smelled like him. He went and lay down on the couch, reading a book. Not soon after he fell asleep.
Din came home later that night as his job went quicker than excepted and saw the other passed out asleep on the couch wearing his shirt. Had he mistook it for his? Or had Din left it lying around? He kneeled down in front of him, gently pushing some hair out of his face. His face looked troubled as if he had a bad dream. So, Din stroked his hair.
This wasn't a normal non-Mandalorian friend thing. Din didn't have normal, friendly feelings for him. He wanted to hold his hands, to hold him close. Wanting to look at him closer, he took off his helmet. Seeing his face without the visor between them felt so close. He watched his chest move up and down for a second until the other started to move.
Quickly, he put his hand over the other's eyes. "Don't."
Luke was about to freak out until he recognized the voice. "Din?" His voice sounded more clear than normal. "Are you not wearing your helmet?"
"I thought you were asleep. I am sorry, did I wake you?"
"No. No." Luke paused and reached out his hand towards the other's face, or so he assumed. "Can I touch you?"
"I-" Din felt himself grow red at the request. 'Yes, if I can ask you something in return."
"Sure." Luke smiled. This was all so bizarre for a moment that he had forgotten how shitty his day had been. He gently touched his face, feeling the stubble of his beard moving away surprised. "Didn't expect you to have a beard." He reached out again, gently running his fingers over his face while keeping his eyes closed and feeling the other's hand over his eyes.
Din was unsure of what to do. He liked it. No one had touched his face in so long. He felt so strangely warm inside it was as if his nerve endings had been dead for so long, and the Jedi revived them.
Luke touched his lips without knowing and pulled his hands back, getting red. "Sorry. Didn't mean to -"
"It's fine." If he were honest, Din didn't mind. He liked the other's touches.
Luke smiled but kept his hands down. "Thanks for trusting me."
"Anytime Mesh'la."
"So, you had a question?"
"Yes, but first let me put my helmet back on." Din used his free hand to hide his face again and to release his hand from Luke's eyes. "Now -" he paused. "Are you okay?"
"What?"
"Sorry, I just - You looked so distant this morning. I wanted to make sure you were okay?" He did, in fact, catch him acting strange that morning. "Do you need help with anything?"
"No, I just feel tired."
"Then rest." Din sat down next to him. " I can stay with you and look over you. Or I could listen to you."
"Thank you." Luke smiled this time more sincerely than this morning. "I just get overwhelmed sometimes. I should not be bothered by everything anymore, but every time I look into the mirror, I am reminded of it."
"It's okay." Din put a hand on his shoulder. "Trauma isn't something that just goes away, but it will impact you less and less as you go."
"I am just so tired of everything. I hate it." Luke sighed and lay down with his head on Din's legs. "I try to quit the habit of critiquing myself so harshly. But I can't. I keep rubbing over all those scars to get rid of them, but I can't. I know scars show how strong you've been, but I hate them."
"That's because you didn't need to be strong. You were a child. You needed to be protected, but no one did. It is like that sometimes, and it's not right."
"What about you? Do you have any scars?" Luke looked at the helmet, which was so comforting to him. "Sorry, that's personal."
"It's fine." Din unbuckled his breastplate and dropped it before pulling his shirt up a bit. "I got shot here by the mother of a son I took away for a job."
"I'm sorry." Luke let his hand run over it. "That must have been hard." He stopped for a bit to think. "Can I show you?"
"What?"
"My body." Luke sat back up again. Looking at his roommate."I want you to see it."
"Of course."
The Jedi took off his shirt before he could hesitate. He was scared to see how the other would react. But to his surprise, Din just touched his scars as he did for him.
"They are so deep." Din's hand ran over the lightning scars that had burned itself in the other's torso."But strangely beautiful, mesh'la."
"Beautiful?" Luke looked up at him.
Din felt himself pulled out of his thoughts, pulling his hand back before the other pulled it back on it. He hesitated but let his fingers run over it again. "Yes, just like you."
Luke felt himself blush. The other calling him beautiful made his heart flutter like crazy. "I like you, Din."
"Yeah, I like you to -"
"No, not like that." Luke's hand was still on the other's holding it against his chest. "I like like you, as in I have a crush on you."
"Oh -"
"Sorry! That was weird and unprofessional and"
"I like you too."
"You do?"
"Yes."
That smile grew on Luke's face again. That one smile Din always wants to see on it. It was strange if all those years ago he hadn't picked him, they wouldn't be here right now.
"No backsies!" The Jedi chuckled. "Oh force, I've been having such an awful few days- I-" He squeezed Din's hand. The one still touching his scars, still touching that part of him he despised. "Sorry, just have a lot going on in my head!"
"Tell me about it."
"I don't know where to start. Or if I should start. But right now, I am just so glad and thankful." Luke leaned his head against the other's. "I am glad that you turned around and stayed, that you accepted my stupid pleas."
"I am glad you had the guts to ask me to stay because I wanted to."
"Really?" Luke playfully hit him. "You could've saved me that embarrassing speech!"
Din squeezed his hand back. "I liked it."
"Kriff, you're going to make me feel flustered all over again!"
Din just smiled watching Luke fuss about it. It was adorable, and he was glad that he was wearing his helmet.
As the evening went on, they got a bit more comfortable, Luke talking about all the things Grogu accomplished today gushing about him. He had grown attached himself.
Din looked down at him as he was resting his head on his legs. He let his fingers run through the other's hair. This was nice. Being able to look after Grogu and protect him was good enough for him. Having the perk of also getting to protect Luke even if he probably didn't need it was terrific. He just wanted to see him happy. It hadn't mattered how or with whom he'd be happy. Finding out that person was him, though hit differently.
Luke just smiled up at him content. He was happy, sure he would have to live with his burdens, but he wasn't alone. Most importantly, he was free to do so. He had the universe in front of him and could go anywhere. To be fair, right now, all he wanted to was to stay right where he was.
