to future consequences

Summary:

Bant is unhappy, very unhappy. There will be consequences to Anakin’s actions and the whole Order will suffer for it.

Work Text:

Bant is very much occupied.

This does not mean, however, that her best friend (who better watch out or he’ll find himself at the bottom of that list) gets to wiggle out of telling her things, especially ones as important as this.

Obi-Wan looks suitable cowed as she makes her way in, expectant and irritated and it almost calms her. As it is, she decides to tire herself out complaining first. If she’s still got energy after that, he can suffer.

”How could he do this!”, Bant exclaims. “He was underage, damn underage by our customs and the official should have checked.”.

”I should have-“, Obi-Wan tries to intercede but Bant is having none of it.

”Don’t you dare Obi-Wan Kenobi! Anakin Skywalker was a Senior Padawan. He attended the lectures you sent him to - the right ones - but he didn’t listen and that’s on him not you.”.

Her friend offers her a tremulous smile.

“That he then proceeded to swear a set of oaths that conflicted with his first was his choice not yours.”.

”I can’t help but feel that I enabled him.”, Obi-Wan offers.

Bant scoffs, “If you had, he would have told you right away. He didn’t because he knew you wouldn’t approve.”.

”He didn’t because he didn’t trust me.”, Obi-Wan counters.

”Maybe”, Bant concedes, “but I saw you with that boy. It was not because of something you did or didn’t do.”.

She is so firm with this that Obi-Wan cannot bring himself to argue, the words frozen on his tongue.

”Besides, we are not being unreasonable. The political ramifications alone are bad enough but the danger he poses to his wife and the danger any potential children could bring is very real.”.

Anakin Skywalker has some mastery over the Force and he shines in it. He could very easily hurt his family by accident and the difficulty non Force sensitives have in giving birth to a Force sensitive is well documented.

Bant herself has been at the lecture at least three times - and has seen Anakin Skywalker there too. Has he forgotten it all? Has he forgotten them?

”Bant, he- the Tusken Massacre.”.

It’s decided then. She doesn’t have the energy to yell anymore, let alone at Obi-Wan. That doesn’t mean his apprentice is off the hook though.

”How will we ever be allowed on Tattooine? We are seekers of peace and one of our own destroyed that on a whole planet for one woman.”.

It may have been his mother, it may have been anyone but Bant could never justify these killings, this massacre. And he did not spare the children. He did not even spare the children.

”He cannot be allowed anywhere near the crèche.”, Bant declares and clearly Obi-Wan has been more active than it seems because he gives her a wry smile.

“It was one of the first things I did”, he confirms, “and he won’t be allowed near Ahsoka either.”.

"Good", she says firmly, "but this is still... I don't know how we'll be able to do our duties when he so flagrantly deserted them like that. And if it comes out, which it will, a marriage between a Jedi Knight with good connections and a Senator, one of the faces of the 2000 - it will be a disaster.".

Bant can hear the sound of tea boiling in the kitchen and light footsteps but she doesn't give it much thought, instead continuing on.

"Any and all bills relating to us will be scrutinised, the 'Jedi are trying to take over' groups will come out of the woodwork in full force and our treaties will be worth almost nothing. We are supposed to be impartial, for Force's sake! What are we going to do now?".

"We launch a preemptive counter media campaign.".

It occurs to Bant then that there was indeed someone in the kitchen, making tea and she sheepishly looks at Adi Gallia.

She’s heard about Feemor’s visit and she’s starting to think that there’s some sort of regular rotation of Hight Council members in Obi-Wan’s rooms. It doesn’t matter now, she’s more interested in what Master Gallia has to say.

There will be consequences, too many to guess but they may as well try.
