The Winchester's quiet life is disturbed when suddenly strange events occur in the world that has been quiet and supernatural free. First there's the strange weather, storms and hurricanes that stopped as suddenly as they started, and then "dinosaurs Sam", said Dean, " you're telling me there's frigging dinosaurs roaming earth".
A knock at the bunker door cut off Dean's rant as he gave Sam a weary look heading up the stairs. "Hello Dean we need to talk about Jack" says Cas calmly as if no time had passed as if he hadn't been dead, hadn't sacrificed himself to the empty to save Dean. "Cas", stuttered Dean, " no you're dead". Cas shook head, "I've being back for some time". "Back for some time", the words are like a knife in Dean's chest. "Back for some time", and Cas didn't call in, didn't tell him he was alive.
Anger tries to creep in, threatening to overturn Dean's control. He turns away from Cas, taking a few deep calming breaths. A routine he's been perfecting over the last six months.
He's not that person any more he reminds himself, anger doesn't control him. Turning back to Cas he shrugged, " So Cas, what's up with Jack and is this related to dinosaurs by any chance", he said coolly business-like.
He sees the confusion and flash of hurt in Cas' eyes. What did the guy expect that he could drop back into their lives with no explanation, apart from "I've been back for some time", and Dean was gonna wrap him up in a hug and throw a damn party.
He turns walking down the steps hearing Cas shut the door and follow him. Sam springs from his seat his brother's eyes wide, " Cas", said Sam. Dean cut him off, "yeah yeah he's been back for a while apparently, he's here about Jack, could be something to do with dinosaurs roaming earth".
Sam looks completely blown away at both Cas' reappearance and Dean's lack of joy. " Hello Sam", said Cas, "yes, the strange events are being caused by Jack. I fear we didn't consider the possible problems that could come from leaving a four-year-old in charge of the whole world", he said sitting down with a heavy sigh.
Dean swallowed, " we", he said sharply. "You were the one that said the kid was gonna save the world, you were the one who thought he was worth trading your life for and not telling us off course. You telling us now he's not up to the job and we have to clean up the mess as usual".
Cas shrunk in his seat, " he's a child Dean", the angel said. "I didn't know this was going to happen and he has done amazing things. He has restored heaven. All your family, they're at peace now, they're not locked in a memory, heaven is the paradise it was supposed to be".
Dean couldn't stop himself, " does that include our Mum who he killed huh, she got paradise in heaven instead of being here so that makes it all ok". Regretting the words instantly Dean dropped his head into his hands shame overcoming him, "sorry", he mumbled, " I didn't mean that".
"It's ok", said Cas his voice low. It's not okay none of this is okay and both of them know it. There's so much tension between them but as usual the problems of the world come first. " What do we do Cas?", asked Dean, "is this an emergency, I mean he's brought dinosaurs back, not exactly end of the world material".
Cas gave Dean an unimpressed look, " dinosaurs aren't exactly friendly Dean", he said, accomplished with air quotes that almost made Dean smile. Sam butted in, "these ones are", the younger Winchester said with a wry smirk.
Turning the laptop on Sam turned it so Cas could see. A half panicked, half amazed news reporter is clambering over words while in the background people are screaming as giant creatures roam in the background.
One of the creatures, a Tyrannosaurus rex darts towards a woman who's frozen in fear. As it reaches her the creature pounces but as the woman goes down to the ground the dinosaur's whole body begins to quiver, its tail beginning to thump like an overexcited dog and its tongue emerges beginning to lick the woman's face enthusiastically.
Sam closed the laptop, "they're not harming anyone thankfully", he said, "but why is Jack bringing back dinosaurs and is he anything to do with the storms that have been happening lately Cas?" .
Cas sighed, "because he's four", he said, "four year olds like dinosaurs even if they're God and the storms are what happens when God who also happens to be a toddler throws a temper tantrum. Yes the dinosaurs are harmless because Jack is good and doesn't want to harm anyone", Cas broke off throwing Dean a withering look before continuing, "however it still isn't appropriate for prehistoric creatures to be roaming earth".
Dean let out a huffed breath, "so what do we do about it?", he asked. "Will the kid come if you pray to him". Cas shook his head, "I've been praying to him for months and he hasn't responded", the angel muttered the pain evident in his voice.
