Chapter Text
"For over a century, I have lived in secret; hiding in the shadows, alone in the world. Until now. I am a vampire. And this is my story."
A young couple, Darren and Brooke are driving in their car through the woods.
"An hour's drive to hear that crap. You know, it wasn't even a band. A guy with a guitar. An hour each way." Darren says keeping his eyes on the road.
"He wasn't that bad." Brooke responds turning towards him.
"He sounded like James Blunt." Darren exclaims annoyed.
"What's wrong with that?" Brooke questions with a smile on her face. Darren turns his head towards her for a second.
"We already have a James Blunt. One's all we need." Darren says quietly.
"So why'd you come?" Brooke asks.
"Because I love you." Darren answers honestly.
"Nicely done. What's with all the fog?" She quips.
"It'll clear in a second." Darren says softly, attempting to ease her worry.
"Watch out!" Brooke yells out in warning.
[They run over a man.]
"Are you okay?" Darren asks his girlfriend who seemed to be in shock.
"We just hit someone! Oh my god!" Brooke exclaimed panicked.
"Call for help." Darren orders her as he jumps out of his car and heads towards the unconscious man.
"Come on, come on!" Brooke exclaims in anger as her phone isn't working.
"Please be alive! Oh, my god." Begs Darren, hoping he hadn't killed someone.
[The man wakes up and bites him in the neck.]
Hopping out of the car, Brooke warns yells out to her boyfriend.
"There's no signal! Darren! Darren?"
[Brooke runs and gets dragged up into the sky.]
Salvatore Boarding House
[Stefan is on the roof.]
"I shouldn't have come home. I know the risk. But I had no choice. I have to know her."
[Jumps off roof]
Gilbert Residence
[Elena is writing in her diary.]
"Dear diary, today will be different. It has to be. I will smile, and it will be believable. My smile will say "I'm fine, thank you." "Yes, I feel much better." I will no longer be the sad little girl who lost her parents. I will start fresh, be someone new. It's the only way I'll make it through."
[In the kitchen.]
"Toast. I can make toast." Jenna says quickly, shoving things into her purse.
"It's all about the coffee, Aunt Jenna." Elena replies, pouring herself coffee into a mug.
"Is there coffee?" Jeremy questions whilst walking into the room.
"Your first day of school and I'm totally unprepared. Lunch money?" Jenna stopped, turning towards the two teenagers.
"I'm good." Elena commented, Jeremy grabbed the money from Jenna's hand.
"Anything else? A number two pencil? What am I missing?" Jenna questions going back to shoving things into her purse.
"Don't you have a big presentation today?" Elena remarked to her aunt.
"I'm meeting with my thesis advisor at...now. Crap!" Jenna grabs her keys and bag and rushes towards the front door.
"Then go. We'll be fine. You okay?" Elena questions turning towards Jeremy.
"Don't start." Jeremy voiced, rolling his eyes and walking away.
[MISSING PERSONS: BROOKE AND DARREN BEHIND ELENA ON TV]
Bonnie's Car
[Elena and Bonnie are driving to school in Bonnie's car.]
"So Grams is telling me I'm psychic. Our ancestors were from Salem, witches and all that, I know, crazy, but she's going on and on about it, and I'm like, put this woman in a home already! But then I started thinking, I predicted Obama and I predicted Heath Ledger, and I still think Florida will break off and turn into little resort islands...Elena! Back in the car." Bonnie rambles on whilst driving.
"I did it again, didn't I? I--I'm sorry, Bonnie. You were telling me that..." Elena responded turning her head towards Bonnie.
"That I'm psychic now." Bonnie declares glancing at Elena before turning her attention back on the road.
"Right. Okay, then predict something. About me. About us." Elena acknowledged.
"I see..." Bonnie starts.
[A crow hits their car.]
[Bonnie swerves and hits the brakes]
"What was that?! Oh, my god! Elena, are you okay?" Bonnie exclaimed worriedly.
"It's okay. I'm fine." Elena muttered shakily.
"It was like a bird or something. It came out of nowhere." Bonnie says breathing heavily.
"Really, I can't be freaked out by cars for the rest of my life." Elena admits shaking her head.
"I predict this year is going to be kick ass. And I predict all the sad and dark times are over and that the two of us are going to be beyond happy."
[A crow is on top of a road sign.]
Mystic Falls High School
[Stefan walks inside the school.]
[Inside the school.]
"Major lack of male real estate. Look at the shower curtain on Kelly Beech. She looks like a hot — can I still say 'tranny mess'?" Bonnie expresses her opinions upon walking into the school.
"No, that's over." Elena chuckles, as the two girls make it two Bonnie's locker.
"Ahh, find a man, coin a phrase. It's a busy year." Bonnie joked.
[Elena waves to Matt. He ignores her.]
"He hates me." Elena sighs sadly, laying her head against the cold metal.
"That's not hate. That's "you dumped me, but I'm too cool to show it, but secretly I'm listening to Air Supply's greatest hits." Bonnie attempts to comfort her.
[Caroline approaches them.]
"Elena. Oh, my god." Caroline spoke.
[Caroline hugs Elena.]
"How are you? Oh, it's so good to see you."
[Caroline lets Elena go.]
"How is she? Is she good?" Caroline asks turning towards Bonnie.
"Caroline, I'm right here. And I'm fine. Thank you." Elena stated, smiling softly.
"Really?" Caroline questions softly.
"Yes. Much better." Elena nods.
"Oh, you poor thing." Caroline expresses "sympathy".
[Caroline hugs her again.]
"Okay, Caroline." Elena chokes out, tapping her on the back.
"Oh! Okay, see you guys later?" Caroline walks off.
"OK! Bye!" Bonnie quietly yelled out after her.
"No comment." Elena says turning towards Bonnie once again.
"I'm not going to say anything." Bonnie shakes her head, closing her locker.
[Outside the school.]
"Don't take more than two in a six-hour window." Jeremy orders Vicki, placing the pills in her palm.
[Vicki takes the pills.]
"Hey, Vicki. I knew I'd find you here with the crackheads." Tyler Lockwood walks up towards his "girlfriend."
"Hey." Vicki responds.
"Hey, Pete Wentz called. He wants his nail polish back." Tyler turns his attention towards Jeremy with a smart quip.
"Pete Wentz, huh? How old school T.R.L. of you. Carson Daly fan?" Jeremy retorts sarcastically.
"Ty, be nice. That's Elena's little brother." Vicki reminds him.
"I know who he is. I'll still kick his ass." Tyler stated.
[Vicky and Tyler kiss]
[Outside the school office.]
"Hold up. Who's this?" Bonnie stops Elena, looking into the school's office.
"All I see is back." Elena says unimpressed.
"It's a hot back."
Elena looks at Bonnie and lets out a scoffed chuckle.
[In the school office.]
"Your records are incomplete. You're missing immunization records, and we do insist on transcripts." The secretary at the front desk informs Stefan, looking at him.
"Please look again. I'm sure everything you need is there."
[Stefan compels the secretary.]
The secretary looks back at the papers.
"Well, you're right. So it is."
[Outside the school office.]
"I'm sensing Seattle, and he plays the guitar." Bonnie declares confidently.
"You're really going to run this whole psychic thing into the ground, huh?" Elena noted.
"Pretty much." Bonnie acknowledged her as she smiles.
"Jeremy, good batch, man." Some random boy says walking by the girls.
"I'll be right back." Elena says angrily as she stomps off after Jeremy.
"Please be hot." Bonnie quietly begs, still stuck on the new guy.
[Elena enters the boy's bathroom.]
"Whoa! Pants down, chick!" A boy yells out exiting a stall and quickly the bathroom.
[Elena grabs Jeremy's face, looking into his eyes to see if he's high.]
"Great. It's the first day of school and you're stoned." Elena states angrily.
"No, I'm not." Jeremy denies quickly.
"Where is it? Is it on you?" Elena interrogates him.
"Stop, all right?! You need to chill yourself, all right?" Jeremy yells out in annoyance.
"Chill myself? What is that, stoner talk? Dude, you are so cool." Elena says in disappointment.
"Look, stop! I don't have anything on me. Are you crazy? I could get expelled for something like that." Jeremy admitted to his sister.
"You haven't seen crazy, Jeremy! I gave you a summer pass, but I am done watching you destroy yourself. No, no, no, you know what? Go ahead. Keep it up. But just know that I am going to be there to ruin your buzz every time, you got it?" Elena declares to him before her voice softens.
"Jeremy, I know who you are. And it's not this person. So don't be this person."
"I don't need this." Jeremy spat out.
[Jeremy leaves.]
[Outside the school office, Bonnie watches Stefan.]
"Thank you." Stefan gives his thanks as he is handed his roster.
"You're welcome." The secretary says going to the back of the office, putting Stefan's file away.
[Outside the boy's bathroom.]
"Uh, pardon me. Um...is this the men's room?" Stefan asks Elena, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Yes. Um, I was just, Um—I was just—It's a long story...." Elena stumbles over her words.
[Elena tries to pass. Stefan makes way for her.]
"Thank you."
[In the history class.]
"Once our home state of Virginia joined confederacy in 1861, it created a tremendous amount of tension within the state. People in Virginia's northwest region had different ideals than those from the traditional deep south. Then Virginia divided in 1863 with the northwest region joining the union." Mr. Tanner explains as he teaches the class. He continues his syllabus of the day.
[Elena and Stefan exchange looks.]
Bonnie texts Elena
(HAWT-E. STARING @ U.
[Elena looks at Stefan. She then looks back to the front.]
After first period a car pulls up into the student parking lot. Two girls get out of the car and head into the school. The eldest girl hands the younger girl a piece of paper and talks to her quietly, before they go their separate ways.
As the older girl walks up some stairs to get to the 3rd floor she feels a slight tingling sensation in the air. Before she can look up to see where it's coming from she bumps into another girl, this causes her to accidentally rip her paper from the tight grip and the other girl's things to fall onto the floor.
"I'm sorry." She helps the other girl pick up her things as people keep walking by them rushing to get to their classes.
"Thanks. I'm Bonnie, I don't think I've seen you around before."
"I'm Asia. I'm new." Bonnie nods, before she realizes what Asia had just said.
"Wow, two new students in one day. That's new. Not crazy new, but new."
"I don't know who the other person is but it's actually three. My little sister is a freshman."
"Cool." Bonnie looks down at Asia's paper and frowns.
"Sorry. I ripped your paper." Bonnie apologizes.
Asia looking down at the paper and let out a groan.
"Well, you can make it up to me by helping me find my class."
"Sure, what class do you have?"
Asia looked at the ripped paper and saw "Pre-Calculus"
"I have Pre-Calculus."
"Well come on, my class isn't that way but I'm happy to help."
"Thanks." Asia says to Bonnie.
As the two girls walk, they make small talk about random things.
When they reach Asia's class, Bonnie invites her to the Mystic Grill and the Falls party that would happen this week.
Asia happily accepts the invitation.
Cemetery
[Elena walks into the cemetery and writes in her diary.]
Dear diary, I made it through the day. I must have said, "I'm fine, thanks," at least thirty-seven times. And I didn't mean it once. But no one noticed. When someone asks, "How are you?" They really don't want an answer.
[A crow appears on her parents grave stone.]
"Okay. Hi, bird. That's not creepy or anything. Shoo!" Elena stands up and waves her hand at the bird.
[The bird flies off.]
"That's what I thought." She says swallowing the fear she had.
[The crow reappears and fog starts to ascend around the cemetery. A man is standing behind a tomb. Elena starts to run.]
"Ahh!" Elena cries out in shock.
[Elena trips and falls. She gets up and sees Stefan.]
"You okay?" Stefan rushes to help her up.
"Were you following me?" Elena asks him warily, ready to run if needed.
"No, I-a, uh, I-a just — I saw you fall." Stefan denies the accusation quickly.
"Uh-huh, and you just happened to be hanging out in a cemetery." Elena says this with more demand and suspicion in her voice as.
"I'm visiting. I have family here."
Elena deflates, and quickly apologizes.
"Oh. Wow. Tactless. I'm sorry. It's the fog, It's making me foggy. And then back there, there was this - this bird, and it was all very Hitchcock for a second. That is the bird movie, right, the Hitchcock?...I'm Elena."
"I'm Stefan." Stefan accepts her half assed apology.
"I know. We have History together."
"And English and French." Stefan notes on the other classes they have together.
"Right." Elena says furrowing her eyebrows softly.
[Stefan pulls a leaf out of Elena's hair.]
"Thanks...Nice ring." Elena blushes before glancing down, noticing the ring.
"Oh. Um, It's a family ring, yeah. I'm kinda stuck with it. It's weird, huh?" Stefan laughs softly trying diffuse the awkwardness.
"No, no. It's just, I mean, there are rings and then there's that." Elena joked.
"Did you hurt yourself?" Stefan asks smelling the thick scent of blood.
"Hmm?" Elena questions him.
"Did you hurt yourself?" Stefan sternly repeats himself.
"Oh, uh, I don't know." Elena turns around and puts her leg up on a broken tree part.
[Elena pulls up her pant leg and sees a cut gushing blood.]
"Oh! Would you look at that? That is not pretty." Elena winced in pain as she pulls her pant leg back down. The cotton rubbing against the split skin.
[Stefan turns around and his face changes].
"Are you okay?" She asks with a small confused smile.
[Stefan's eyes start to change]
"You should go. Take care of that." Stefan suggested rubbing his nose.
"Really, it's nothing." She waves off the suggestion.
[She turns around but Stefan has disappeared.]
Salvatore Boarding House
[Stefan is writing in his diary.]
"I lost control today. Everything I've kept buried inside came rushing to the surface. I'm simply not able to resist her."
Creed Household
Asia drives her sister back to the house and parks on the sidewalk. Entering the house she puts her bag on the coat rack. She walks into the kitchen and sees her mom making a sandwich.
"Hey mom. How's your day going?" Going to the fridge, she grabs a yogurt.
"It's ok. We finished unpacking all of the boxes. How was school today? You make some friends yet?"
"I think I made one. Her name is Bonnie. She invited me out for a party and lunch."
Athena hums quietly, before turning around to grab a paper plate.
"And where is this party?" She asked putting her sandwich on the plate.
"At some place called the falls. I'll be sure to call you or dad or anyone else if I'm in trouble."
"Can you take your sister with you?" Before Asia could start talking, Athena cut her off.
"You know she has a hard time making friends. This could help her."
"Fine."
"Good. Then you can go. Be back by 12 o'clock. And don't drink too much. You know what, don't drink at all." Asia made a face which Athena countered with one of her own.
"I was a teen once, we all go through that phase."
Mystic Grill
"Hey Vick." Jeremy greets Vicki, only to have Vicki somewhat ignore him.
"I'm Working."
[She arrives at Matt and Tyler's table.]
"Thanks, Vick." Matt says as his older sister pours him some coffee.
"Do you need another refill?" Vicki asks ready to pour some coffee for Tyler.
"I'd love one." Tyler says in a way that suggests a double entandre.
[Vicki leaves the table.]
"Please tell me you're not hooking up with my sister." Matt begs his best friend.
"I'm not hooking up with your sister." Tyler lies through his teeth. Matt saw through the lie though.
"You're such a dick." Matt says rolling his eyes, sipping his drink.
[Jeremy catches up to Vicki.]
"Hey, what's your deal? I mean, summer you act one way and then school starts and you can't be bothered." Jeremy expresses his anger to Vicki.
"Look, Jeremy, I really appreciate all the pharmaceuticals, but you can't keep following me around like a lost puppy." Vicki replied quietly.
"When's the last time you had sex with a puppy?" Jeremy quietly pointed out.
"Hey, keep it down. I don't want to tell the whole world I deflowered Elena's kid brother." Vicki spoke in a hushed tone.
"Yeah, and deflowered and deflowered." Jeremy joked about their sexual encounters.
"We hooked up a few times in a drug haze. It's over. You gotta back off before you ruin things between me and Tyler." Vicki informs him.
"Oh, come on, the guy's a total douche. He only wants you for your ass." Jeremy remarked.
"Yeah? What do you want me for?" Vicki retorted.
[Caroline and Bonnie enter.]
"His name is Stefan Salvatore. He lives with uncle up at the old Salvatore Boarding House. He hasn't lived here since he was a kid. Military family, so they moved around a lot. He's a Gemini, and his favorite color is blue." Caroline rambles about Stefan.
"You got all of that in one day?" Bonnie says in disbelief.
"Oh, please, I got all that between third and fourth period. We're planning a June wedding." Caroline says ecstatically.
"Yeah, well he's not the only new student we have two more." Bonnie informs Caroline.
"Really. Spill, are they cute too." This causes Bonnie to let out a chuckle.
"I guess. Their names are Asia and Danae. Their family moved here four and half months ago. I think they're from Philadelphia, just from how thick their accents are. Asia is in our grade and Danae is a freshman."
"Four and half months ago, woah. Talk about terrible timing."
Gilbert Residence
"I'm meeting Bonnie at the grill." Elena yells out to Jenna, heading towards the door.
"Okay, have fun. Wait, I got this. Don't stay out late, it's a school night." Jenna says.
"Well done, Aunt Jenna." Elena chuckles, turning towards the door once again.
[She opens the door.]
"Oh." Elena hesitates, keeping her hand on the doorknob.
"Sorry, I was about to knock. I wanted to apologize for my disappearing act earlier. I know it was...strange." Stefan explained.
"No worries. I get it, blood makes you squeamish." She said in a causal voice.
"Um, something like that. How's your leg?"
"Oh, it's fine. Just a scratch, barely. How did you know where I lived?" Elena questions Stefan.
"It's a small town. I asked the first person I saw. Um, I thought you might want this back." Stefan explained to Elena.
[He hands her her diary.]
"Oh, I must have dropped it. I--thank you."
"Don't worry, I didn't...read it." Stefan joked softly.
"No? Why not? Most people would have." Her tone was genuinely curious.
"Well, I wouldn't want anyone to read mine." He replied gently.
"You keep a journal?" Elena stressed softly.
"Yeah, if I don't write it down, I forget it. Memories are too important."
"Yeah. I'm just gonna...umm, you don't have to stay out there." Elena gestures for him to enter.
[He tries to go in but he can't.]
"I'm fine. Sorry, were you going somewhere?"
"Yeah, I'm meeting a friend. Do you want to come?" Elena invites him to hang out with her.
Mystic Grill
"How's Elena doing?" Matt questions as he sits at the table where Bonnie is meeting with Asia in an hour.
"Her mom and dad died. How do you think she's feeling? She's putting on a good face, but it's only been four months."
"Has she said anything about me?" He asks desperately.
"Oh, no. Nope. I am so not getting in the middle. You pick up the phone and call her." Bonnie replied calmly.
"I feel weird calling her. She broke up with me."
"Give it more time, Matt."
[Elena enters with Stefan.]
"More time, huh?" Matt negatively remarks.
[He walks over to Elena and Stefan.]
"Hey, I'm Matt, nice to meet you." Matt introduces himself.
"Hi. Stefan." The two men shake hands.
"Hey." Elena awkwardly greets her ex boyfriend.
"Hey."
[At the table]
"So, you were born in Mystic Falls?" Caroline interrogates Stefan.
"Mm-Hmm. And moved when I was still young." Stefan replied in a level voice.
"Parents?" Bonnie asks noticing he rarely talks about them.
"My parents passed away." He said in a grieving tone.
"I'm sorry. Any siblings?" Expressing sympathy, It was Elena's turn to ask a question.
"None that I talk to. I live with my uncle." Bonnie caught onto the fact that he implied he had siblings and quickly talked about it.
"But you do have siblings?"
"What?" Stefan says stunned, looking at Bonnie.
"You said "None that I talk to." So you have siblings, where are they?" Before Stefan could answer, Caroline changed the subject.
"So, Stefan, if you're new, then you don't know about the party tomorrow." Caroline exclaimed excitedly.
"It's a back to school thing at the falls." Bonnie informs.
"Are you going?" Stefan questions, looking at Elena.
"Of course she is." Bonnie answers for Elena.
30 minutes later
After Caroline, Elena and Stefan left, Asia finally pulled up to the Mystic Grill with Danae.
"You know, for such a small town, things are very easy to look over." Danae commented.
"Don't be rude. It's nice." Asia parked outside the Grill.
"You hate it." Danae stepped out of the car, Asia following.
"You don't like how everyone knows everyone. It's stupid. You like big cities, with lots to explore and different cultures and foods. Here there's like 20 black people. There's not even a Latino or an Asian or Native American. Although I know Native Americans were on this land first." Danae started rambling, which she does when she's talking about something she's passionate about.
"Would you hush. I love you, but I will seriously leave you here and pretend like I don't know you." Asia always got her little sister to be quiet with that little threat, mostly because she actually did it. And she got a beating for it.
Walking into the Mystic Grill, Asia gets that tingling sensation again and looks around for Bonnie, when she sees her at a table she walks over, Danae following after her older sister.
"You felt that too, right?" Danae quietly asks her sister.
"Of course I did." Making it to Bonnie's table Asia greets her.
"Hey there killer."
"Hey A." Glancing at the other girl beside her, Bonnie could tell that was her sister.
"And you must be Danae?" Danae made a face.
"No. I'm Danae. And you're Bonnie, nice to know you're mom gave you a name." Asia's head turned towards her sister so fast, she almost cracked it.
"Stop being mean before I tell mom." Danae rolls her eyes before apologizing.
"It's okay. I get it, you moved somewhere else and you don't feel comfortable."
"See, she understands. Well, that took a load off, I'm going to get some hot chocolate."
While Danae went to a bar stool, Asia sat with Bonnie and had a conversation whilst she consistently apologized for her sister.
Salvatore Boarding House
"You promised." Zach, Stefan's great-great nephew angrily says as he stomps into his room.
[Zach shows Stefan the newspaper article.]
"This was an animal attack." Stefan says confidently, yet with a slight confused expression.
"Don't give me that. I know the game. You tear them up enough, they always suspect an animal attack. You said you had it under control." Zach said tightly.
"And I do." Stefan responded truthfully.
"Please, Uncle Stefan. Mystic Falls is a different place now. It's been quiet for years, but there are people who still remember. And you being here, it's just going to stir things up." Zach pleads with Stefan.
"It's not my intention."
"Then what is? Why did you come back? After all this time, why now?" Zach asserted.
"I don't have to explain myself." Stefan stated in a harsh and defensive tone.
"I know that you can't change what you are. But you don't belong here anymore."
"Where do I belong?" Stefan asks his nephew.
"I can't tell you what to do. But coming back here was a mistake."
[ Stefan opens a door. Pulls out a journal with what looks to be a really old picture of Elena. The writing under the picture says Katherine 1864]
Mystic Falls High School
[In history class.]
"The Battle of Willow Creek took place right at the end of the war in our very own Mystic Falls." Mr. Tanner explains.
"How many casualties resulted in this battle? Ms. Bennett?"
"Um...a lot? I'm not sure. Like a whole lot. I don't really pay attention to racist wars."
"Cute and realistic becomes dumb in an instant, Ms. Bennett. Mr. Donovan? Would you like to take this opportunity to overcome your embedded jock stereotype?" Mr. Tanner starts calling out "random" students.
"It's okay, Mr. Tanner, I'm cool with it."
"Hmm. Elena? Surely you can enlighten us about one of the town's most significant historical events?"
"I'm sorry, I--I don't know." Elena hadn't been paying attention or even studying. I mean who would, it's only the second day of school.
"I was willing to be lenient last year for obvious reasons, Elena. But the personal excuses ended with summer break." Tanner being Tanner came at her.
"There were 346 casualties. Unless you're counting local civilians." Stefan cuts in, rescuing Elena.
"That's correct. Mister...?"
"Salvatore."
"Salvatore. Any relation to the original settlers here at Mystic Falls?" Mr. Tanner questions Stefan.
"Distant."
"Well, very good. Except, of course, there were no civilian casualties in this battle." Mr. Tanner thought he was right.
"Actually, there were 27, sir. Confederate soldiers, they fired on the church, believing it to be housing weapons. They were wrong. It was a night of great loss. The founder's archives are, uh, stored in civil hall if you'd like to brush up on your facts, Mr. Tanner."
"Hmm." Mr. Tanner hummed in annoyance.

[Stefan arrives at the party and is listening for Elena.]
"Just admit it, Elena." Bonnie presses for her best friend to admit she likes Stefan.
"Oh, okay, so he's a little pretty." Elena gushes whilst blushing.
"He has that romance novel stare." Bonnie says hyping it up.
"Well, what about this Asia girl. You said you got a feeling when you're around her." Elena questions Bonnie about the new friend she made.
"Yeah, not that feeling. But like, like we were supposed to meet. You know?"
"Maybe this was what your psychic powers are telling you. That she's here to help."
"Maybe."
[Caroline walks up to Stefan.]
"Hey! You made it!" Caroline yells out over the loud music.
"I did."
"Well, let's get you a drink." Caroline grabs his hand and starts tugging him, but he plants his heels into the ground.
"Well, I'm-."
"Oh, come on." Caroline ignores him and continues tugging him.
[Bonnie and Elena are still talking.]
"So where is he?" Bonnie asks looking around at all of the teens at the party.
"I don't know. You tell me, you're the psychic one."
"Right, I forgot. Okay, so give me a sec. Grams says I have to concentrate." Bonnie shakes her hands out and takes a deep breath.
"Wait, you need a crystal ball." Elena looks around and grabs a random beer bottle.
[She gives her a bottle. Bonnie takes it and touches Elena's hand. Bonnie spaces out for a while, comes back to her senses, and abruptly pulls her hand back.]
"What?" Elena asks Bonnie in concern.
"That was weird. When I touched you, I saw a crow."
"What?" Elena's voice now scared and shaky.
"A crow. There was fog, a man. I'm drunk. It's the drinking. There's nothing psychic about it. Yeah? Ok, I'm gonna get a refill."
[Bonnie leaves Elena alone.]
"Okay? Bonnie!" Elena watches Bonnie run off. She sighs.
[She turns around Stefan is behind her.]
"Hi." Stefan greets Elena.
"Hi."
"I did it again, didn't it?" Asking about him mysteriously disappearing constantly.
"Yeah."
"I'm sorry. You're upset about something."
"Oh, uh, no, it's- it's just Bonnie. She's...You know what? Never mind. You're...here." Elena says through a soft smile.
"I'm here." Stefan smiles back.
Asia's car
"Mom says don't let me out of your sight, no drinking, no drinking and driving and no drugs or smoking." Danae reminds Asia reading the list of orders, from her blackberry phone.
A "ping" sounds off on Danae's phone and she reads the last order.
"And get brioche bread before the stores close."
Asia nod's parking her car by the bonfire but not too close. She and Danae then get out and look around for Bonnie.
[Bridge near the party.]
"You know, you're kind of the talk of the town."
"Am I?" Stefan wonders aloud.
"Mmm hmm. Mysterious new guy, oh, yeah. It's like a book."
"Well, you have the mysterious thing going, too. Twinged in sadness." Stefan jokes softly.
"What makes you think that I'm sad?"
"Well, we did meet in a graveyard." Stefan deadpanned.
"Right. Well, no, technically we met in the men's room. You don't want to know, it's....it's not exactly party chit-chat."
"Well, I've never really been very good at, uh, chit-chat." Stefan says trying to ease her into talking to him.
"Last spring. . my parents' car drove off of a bridge into the lake. And I was in the backseat and I survived, but...they didn't. So that's my story."
"You won't be sad forever, Elena."
[Woods by the party.]

"No, Ty. I'm not having sex against a tree." Vicki warns Tyler. But he keeps pressing.
"Oh, come on, it would be hot."
"For who? No, it's not going to happen. It's not going to happen, not here, not like this. No. I said no. I said no! Ow, that hurts!" Vicki cries out.
[Jeremy appears.]
"Hey, leave her alone!"
"You know, you're starting to get on my nerves, Gilbert." Tyler spat out his words slightly slurring.
"Just go, Tyler, get the hell away from me." Vicki shoves Tyler away from her and backs away.
"Wow. Vicki Donovan says no. That's a first."
[Tyler leaves.]
"I didn't need your help."
"It seems like you did." Jeremy remarks.
"He was just drunk." Vicki tries standing up for Tyler.
"I'm drunk. Am I throwing myself at you?" Jeremey waves his arms around as he speaks.
"No, you're worse. You want to talk to me, get to know me, see into my soul and screw and screw and screw until you're done with me."
"Is that what you think?"
"That's what I know."
[Bridge by the party.]
"I like Bonnie, she seems like a good friend. Who are the other girls with her?"
"Best friend in the world. I think that's Asia and Danae. They're also sort of new." Elena tries to explain.
"And Matt, he can't seem to, uh, take his eyes off of us."
"Matt's that friend since childhood that you start dating because you owe it to yourselves to see if you can be more." Elena stops at a part of the bridge.
"And?" Stefan ponders.
"And then my parents died, and everything changed. Anyway, Matt and I, together we just, I don't know, it wasn't, um...it wasn't..." She couldn't get the word out.
"Passionate?"
"No. No, it wasn't passionate..."
[Stefan's eyes start to change.]
"Hey, um, are you okay? Um, Your eye, it just, it's--."
"Oh, um...Yeah, no. It's, um, it's nothing. Um, are you thirsty? I'm gonna get us a drink."
[He leaves.]
[Near the party.]
"Jeremy? Is that you?...Jeremy?" Vicki calls out.
[Fog descends around her. A man is standing behind her. She is attacked.]
[At the party.]
"Looking for someone?" Matt asks walking up to Elena.
"Hey." Elena greets him.
"When you broke up with me, you said it was because you needed some time alone. You don't look so alone to me."
"Matt, you don't understand. It's--." Elena tries to give an explanation, but he cuts her off.
"That's okay, Elena. You do what you have to do. I just want to let you know that...I still believe in us. And I'm not giving up on that."
"Matt..." Elena calls out for him as he walks away.
"Hey! There you are. Have you been down to the falls yet? Because they are really cool at night. And I can show you...if you want." Caroline walks up to Stefan and immediately starts flirting obnoxiously.
"I think you've had too much to drink." Stefan tells her.
"Well, of course I have. So—."
"Caroline. You and me, it's not gonna happen. Sorry." He says this sternly.
[Stefan approaches Elena.]
"I was wondering who abducted you, but now I know."
"Is she like that with, uh, all the guys?" Stefan asks as he stands beside her.
"No. You're fresh meat. She'll back off eventually. Hmm. God, you gotta be kidding me!"
[Jeremy is drunkenly walking into the woods.]
"What is it?" He says with concern.
"My brother." Stefan follows her eyesight and sees Jeremy.
"The drunk one?"
"That would be the one. Excuse me."
"Need some help?" Stefan calls out over the loud music.
She yells back as she walks away to get her brother.
"Trust me, you're not going to want to witness this. Jeremy! Jeremy!"
[In the woods.]
"Jeremy, where the hell are you going?"
"I don't want to hear it!" Jeremy slurred out.
"Yeah, well, too bad!"
[Jeremy trips. He sees Vicki's body, she's been bitten.]
"Vicki? No! Oh, my god, it's Vicki!" Jeremy sobers up quickly, adrenaline pumping through his body.
"Oh, my god!"
"No!"
[At the party.]
"Somebody help!"
"Vicki? Vicki, what the hell?!" Matt shouts running towards his older sister.
"What happened to her?" Tyler now somewhat sober, asks.
"Somebody, call an ambulance!" Asia who had now made it to the crowd of people with Danae and Bonnie, pulled out her phone and called the cops. (Which was a first for her.)
"Everybody back up, give her some space!" Tyler booms loudly to the crowd of people.
"It's her neck. Something bit her. She's losing a lot of blood." Elena quickly observes.
Danae quickly asked for the car keys and ran to get a clean cloth.
"Put this on her neck."
"Vicki, Vicki, come on, open your eyes, look at me." Matt pleads to his sister.
They were all so worried about Vicki that no one noticed Stefan slipping away from the group.
Salvatore Boarding House
"What's going on?" Zach asks quickly after Stefan rushed into the house.
"Someone else was attacked tonight, Zach, and it wasn't me."
[Stefan enters his bedroom. A crow appears.]
"Damon." Stefan spat out through gritted teeth.
[A man is standing on the balcony.]
"Hello, brother."
"Crow's a bit much, don't you think?"
"Wait till you see what I can do with the fog."
"When'd you get here?"
"Well, I couldn't miss your first day at school. Your hair's different. I like it."
"It's been 15 years, Damon."
"Thank God. I couldn't take another day of the nineties. That horrible grunge look? Did not suit you. Remember, Stefan, it's important to stay away from fads."
"Why are you here?"
"I miss my little brother."
"You hate small towns. It's boring. There's nothing for you to do."
"I've managed to keep myself busy."
"You know, you left that girl alive tonight. That's very clumsy of you."
"Ah. That can be a problem...for you." Damon teased.
"Why are you here now?"
"I could ask you the same question. However, I'm fairly certain your answer can be summed up all into one little word...Elena."
[Woods]
[Matt leaves by ambulance with Vicky.]
"Hey. We're all gonna go to Mainline Coffee, wait for news." Bonnie informs Elena.
"I gotta take Jeremy home."
"Elena, there's no way I'm psychic. I know that. But whatever I saw, or I think I saw, I have this feeling..."
"Bonnie, what?"
"That it's just the beginning."
Salvatore Boarding House
"She took my breath away. Elena. She's a dead ringer for Katherine. Is it working, Stefan? Being around her, being in her world? Does it make you feel alive?" Damon continued to tease Stefan.
"She's not Katherine."
"Well, let's hope not. We both know how that ended. Tell me something, when's the last time you had something stronger than a squirrel?"
"I know what you're doing, Damon. It's not gonna work."
"Yeah? Come on. Don't you crave a little?"
[Damon starts hitting Stefan.]
"Stop it." Stefan says in an warning tone.
"Let's do it. Together. I saw a couple girls out there. Or just, let's just cut to the chase, let's just go straight for Elena."
"Stop it!" Stefan continues to warn him.
"Imagine what her blood tastes like!"
[Stefan's face transforms.]
"I can."
"I said stop!"
[Stefan runs into Damon, throwing him out of the window. When he lands on the pavement, Damon isn't there.]
"I was impressed. I give it a six. Missing style, but I was pleasantly surprised. Very good with the whole face...thing. It was good."
"You know, it's all fun and games, Damon, huh? But wherever you go, people die."
"That's a given."
"Not here. I won't allow it."
"I take that as an invitation."
"Damon, please. After all these years, can't we just give it a rest?"
"I promised you an eternity of misery, so I'm just keeping my word."
"Just stay away from Elena." Stefan begs Damon.
"Where's your ring? Oh, yeah, the sun is coming up in a couple of hours, and, poof, ashes to ashes. Relax. It's right here."
[Damon grabs Stefan by the throat and throws him against the garage.]
"You should know better than to think you're stronger than me. You lost that fight when you stopped feeding on people. I wouldn't try it again." Damon turns seeing a light switch turn on.
"I think we woke Zach up. Sorry, Zach."
[Woods]
[Jeremy is drinking a beer. Elena arrives.]
"You okay? I called Jenna, she's on her way. Those people in uniforms, last time I checked, they're the police. People are going to stop giving you breaks, Jer. They just don't care anymore. They don't remember that our parents are dead, because they've got their own lives to deal with. The rest of the world has moved on. You should try, too."
"I've seen you in the cemetery writing in your diary. Is that--is that supposed to be you moving on?"
"Mom and Dad wouldn't have wanted this."
Mystic Grill
"Are you sober yet?" Bonnie asks Caroline.
"No."
"Keep drinking. I gotta get you home. I gotta get myself home."
"Why didn't he go for me? You know, how come the guys that I want never want me?"
"I'm not touching that."
"I'm inappropriate. I always say the wrong thing. And...Elena always says the right thing. She doesn't even try! And he just picks her. And she's always the one that everyone picks, for everything. And I try so hard, and...I'm never the one."
"It's not a competition, Caroline."
"Yeah, it is."
"If you think it's a competition then you are trying too hard. Don't chase after a guy, let the guy chase you."
Hospital
[Matt is sitting at the hospital with Vicki. Vicki wakes up.]
"Vicki...Hey. Hey, it's okay. You're gonna be okay."
"Matt--."
"Hey, don't try to talk, okay? You're fine."
"Vampire." Vicki tries to warn before passing out once again.
Creed Household
Asia parks in the same spot as before, before the two girls just sit in silence.
They look at each other before getting out of the car and into the house.
They head to the entertainment room where the rest of the family is watching television. Danae grabs the remote and cuts the TV off.
Darius throws a piece of popcorn at her, cursing.
"We have a problem." Asia says urgently.
"What is it sweetie?" Mama ponders, with a concerned look on her face.
"The doppelgänger isn't the only one here. The vampires are coming back. And the Bennett witch doesn't know she's a witch. Or at least she doesn't believe it."
Adrian says what everyone is thinking.
"What do we do now?"
Gilbert Residence/Salvatore Boarding House
Dear diary, I couldn't have been more wrong. I thought that I could smile, nod my way through it; pretend like it would all be ok.
I had a plan. I wanted to change who I was; create a life as someone new, someone without the past.
Without the pain.
Someone alive.
But it's not that easy. The bad things stay with you.
They follow you.
Mystic Grill
[Caroline is alone at the table. Damon looks at her.]
You can't escape them, as much as you want to.
[Damon smiles at Caroline. She smiles back.]
Gilbert Residence
[Elena is in her bedroom.]
All you can do is be ready for the good. So when it comes, you invite it in, because you need it. I need it.
[Elena sees Stefan outside her window.]
"I know it's late. But, uh...I needed to know that you were ok." Stefan explains himself.
"You know, for months, that's all anyone's wondered about me. If I'll be ok."
"What do you tell them?" Stefan questions Elena.
"That I'll be fine."
"Do you ever mean it?" Stefan wondered.
"Ask me tomorrow. It's warmer in the house. We can talk. Would you like to come in?" Elena invites him in shyly.
"Yes."
[Stefan enters Elena's house.]
Chapter 4: Night of the Comet
Summary:
The comet comes.
Bonnie starts “seeing” things.
Notes:
Sorry I’ve been MIA. I’ve been caught up in school work and having to plan for prom and stuff.
Also another warning.
I’m adding some realism into the story, to make it a bit better. So if you don’t like it, move on.
Chapter Text
Woods
[A man and a woman are camping in the forest. Fog descends around the tent.]
"Hey. Did you hear that?"
"Hear what?" He questioned his girlfriend.
"I heard thunder."
"There's no thunder."
"Are you sure? Because if it rains, then we won't be able to see the comet."
"It's not gonna rain. Listen, I...got you a little something. It's back in the car. Don't you move."
"Stay dry."
"It's not gonna rain." He says exiting the tent.
[A dripping noise pounds on the tent after the man leaves. The woman smiles triumphantly.]
"I knew it! I told you it was gonna rain!" She said triumphantly.
[She sees her boyfriend up in a tree. His blood dripping on the tent. She runs to the car.]
"Open! No! Please!"
[The car beeps as the doors unlock. The woman looks around nervously. Someone drops from the trees and kills her.]
Gilbert Residence/Salvatore Boarding House
"Dear diary, this morning is...different. There is change. I can sense it, feel it.
I'm awake. For the first time in a long time, I feel completely and undeniably wide awake.
For once, I don't regret the day before it begins.
I welcome the day...
Because I know...
I will see her again.
I will see him again. For the first time in a long time, I feel good."
[Elena goes out of her room.]
Gilbert Residence
"Do I look adult? As in respectfully parental?" Jenna asks Elena for her opinion on her outfit.
"Depends on where you're going."
"Jeremy's parent-teacher conference. Hair up or down?"
[Jenna puts her hair up.]
"Sexy stewardess." Elena comments.
[Jenna lets it down.]
"Boozy housewife." She comments again.
"Up it is. You're feisty today."
"I feel good, which is rare. So I've decided to go with it. Fly free, walk on the sunshine, and all that stuff. Where is Jeremy?"
"He left early. Something about getting to wood shop early to finish a birdhouse."
[Jenna pauses.]
"You guys don't have wood shop, do you?"
"No."
"Yeah."
Hospital
[Jeremy stands outside Vicki's room.]
"You can't be in here, hon. Visiting hours don't start till 9:00." A nurse tells him as she goes to check Vicki's vitals.
"I just...how is she?" Jeremy asks desperately.
"She's lost a lot of blood."
"Yeah, but she's gonna be OK, right?"
"She needs her rest. So you come back later. Come on."
Mystic Falls High School
[In history class, Elena and Stefan look at each other while their teacher lectures.]
"Originally discovered nearly 5 centuries ago, it hasn't been over Mystic Falls in over 145 years. Now, the comet will be its brightest right after dusk during tomorrow's celebration. Are we bothering you, Mr. Salvatore? Ms. Gilbert?"
[Elena and Stefan drop their gazes. The bell rings.]
[In the hallway.]
"I brought it. Told you." Stefan hands Elena a book.
""Wuthering Heights" by Ellis Bell. You know, I can't believe she didn't use her real name."
"All the Bronte sisters used pseudonyms. It was the time. Female writers weren't very accepted then."
"Where did you get it?"
"Uh, it was passed down. Through the family."
"Ah." Elena didn't believe him but she let it go.
"I have lots of books. Go ahead. Keep it."
"Oh, no. I...but I would like to read it again. I promise I'll give it back."
"Ok."
[In another hall]
"I'm confused. Are you psychic or clairvoyant?"
"Technically, Grams says I'm a witch. My ancestors were these really cool Salem witch chicks or something. Grams tried to explain it all, but she was looped on the liquor so I kinda tuned out. Crazy family, yes. Witches? I don't think so." Bonnie rambles, waving her hands around.
"Yeah, well, feel free to conjure up the name and number of that guy from last night."
"I didn't see him, you did. Why didn't you just talk to him?"
"I don't know. I was drunk."
[Outside, Jeremy walks up to Tyler.]
"Hey, Tyler. Hey, I'm sorry to interrupt. I was just wondering how Vicki's doing, since you guys are so close. Is she ok?"
"She's fine. Now get out of here." Tyler says annoyed.
"How bad is she? Do they know what attacked her? Is she going to make a full recovery? Was she happy to see you? What room number was she in?"
"I'm gonna kick your ass."
"Yeah, you keep saying that, but when are you actually going to do it? Huh? 'Cause I vote for right here and right now."
[Jeremy shoves Tyler.]
"Walk away, Gilbert. It's your final warning."
"No, this is your final warning, dick. I'm sick of watching you play Vicki. If you hurt her one more time, I swear to God, I will kill you." Jeremy threatens Tyler.
[Jeremy leaves.]
"Damn, that was like a death threat. Did you hear that?"
[He turns to the girls beside him.]
[Matt and Elena talk about Vicki.]
"They're keeping her overnight to make sure there's no infection, but she should be able to come home tomorrow."
"That's good news."
"Yeah."
"Did you get in touch with your mom?"
"Called and left a message. She's in Virginia Beach with her boyfriend, so...we'll see how long it takes her to come rushing home."
"Vicki's lucky that she's ok."
[Stefan is sitting on a table revealing that he has been listening to their entire conversation.]
"I know, and now there's talk of some missing campers."
"Did she say what kind of animal it was that attacked her?"
"She said it was a vampire."
"What?" Elena says in disbelief.
"Yeah, she wakes up last night and mutters "vampire" and then passes out."
"OK, that is weird."
"I think she was drunk. So what's up with you and the new guy?"
"Matt, the last thing that I want to do is hurt you."
"You know, I'm...I'm actually gonna go back to the hospital. I want to be there when Vicki wakes up, get the real story about last night."
[Stefan disappears.]
[Jenna talks to Mr. Tanner in the history classroom.]
"As Jeremy's teacher, I'm concerned. All right? It's the third day of school and he's skipped six of his classes. He could get truancy and CPS would have to be called."
"Mr. Tanner, are you aware that Jeremy and Elena's parents died?"
"Four months ago, a great loss. Car accident. Wickery bridge, if I remember correctly. And you're related to the family how? The, uh, mother's kid sister?"
"Younger sister."
"Right." Mr. Tanner says tightly.
"Yes. Six classes? Are you sure? I mean, that's kind of hard to do."
"Not when you're on drugs. It's his attempt at coping, Ms. Sommers. And the signs are there. He's moody, withdrawn, argumentative, hungover. Are there any other relatives in the picture?" Mr. Tanner asks her with a concerned expression.
"I'm their sole guardian."
"Uh-huh. Could there be?"
"What are you suggesting, exactly?"
"It's an impossible job, isn't it, raising two teens that are trying to find their place in the world?"
"It's been tough, but, no, it's not."
"Wrong answer. It is an extremely impossible job, anything less and you're not doing it properly."
Hospital
[Matt is waiting with Vicki. She wakes up.]
"Whoa! Vick. Vicki, hey. Vick, it's Matt. Hey, what's wrong?"
"No! No! Get off! No! No! No!"
"Nurse!"
[Matt goes to look for a doctor. Stefan enters the hospital room and compels her.]
"It was an animal that attacked you. It came out of the night and jumped you. You blacked out. It's all you remember."
"It's all I remember."
"An animal attacked you. You blacked out. It's all you remember."
"It's all I remember."
"Nurse! I need help! It's my sister."
"She seems fine."
"But, she was screaming, she was-."
"I'll be back in about an hour or two just to do a routine check. We'll see if she needs a psych evaluation."
[Vicki is back in bed. Matt sees Stefan leaving. He follows Stefan. Stefan enters a room with blood donors and blood bags. His face starts to change, but he leaves as quickly as possible. Matt enters the same room. He looks for Stefan but does not find him.]
Mystic Grill
"Well, I was talking to Grams, and she said the comet is a sign of impending doom. The last time it passed over Mystic Falls, there was lots of death. So much blood and carnage, it created a bed of paranormal activity."
"Yeah, and then you poured Grams another shot and she told you about the aliens. So then what?" Caroline changes the subject back to Elena.
"So then nothing."
"You and Stefan talked all night? There was no sloppy first kiss or touchy feely of any kind?" Caroline said in slight disappointment.
"Nope. We didn't go there."
"Not even a handshake? I mean, Elena, we are your friends. Ok? You are supposed to share the smut."
"We just talked for hours."
"OK, what is with the blockage? Just jump his bones already! Ok, it's easy. Boy likes girl, girl likes boy, sex!" Bonnie rolls her eyes and texts Asia, inviting her down to the Grill. After a very long minute she gets a response.
Bonnie only catches the end of the conversation.
"Profound." Elena says disgusted.
[Elena gets up.]
"Where are you going?" Bonnie asks in confusion.
"Caroline's right. It is easy. If I sit here long enough, I'll end up talking myself out of it instead of doing what I started the day saying what I was going to do."
[Elena leaves.]
"Who were you texting? Is it a secret beau?" Caroline leans over trying to read the text message, but Bonnie locks her phone before she can get the chance.
Caroline pouts and sits back, slouching.
[Asia and the boys arrive a couple minutes after Elena leaves.]
The waiter arrives with the pie and milkshake a couple minutes after Elena leaves, just as Asia is pulling up in her car.
Asia steps out of the car along with three guys, all a bit older than her.
Bonnie waves her over and the foursome head over towards the Bennett girl and a blonde.
"Hey A. This is Caroline. Caroline this is Asia."
"Oh, that's your new friend right. Who're the cute ones next to her?" The boys all made faces before looking at each other.
"These are my cousins. Alex, Henry and Darius." Bonnie greets them politely which they return.
"You guys want to head inside? It's kinda cool out here." Asia nodded and they all headed inside, Asia almost forgetting about her sweets until Alex noticed them on the table.
Grabbing the food, she rushed into the grill following the group.
Once they get comfortable, they start talking about the comet and what they like about Virginia and its attractions.
Gilbert Residence
"I picked up dinner. Tacos. I had an urge for guacamole."
"No, I'm good, thanks."
"Eat anyway. It's a ruse. I want to talk."
[Jeremy starts to leave.]
"Hey, you! Come. Sit."
[Jeremy sits down]
"Back in school, freshman year, I could eat my weight in nachos, with extra cheese. It was my munchie food whenever I got stoned."
"You get high?"
"Did. Past tense. But, yeah. Loved it. Anything to get a little distraction from life...reality. And it worked. For a while. Never lasts, though. Hey, I'm not saying I wouldn't love to rail back and kick it, but with a thesis looming and a waistline expanding..."
[Jeremy gets up and leaves when Jenna isn't looking. But Jenna notices and she sighs.]
Hospital
[Matt is sleeping on a chair. Vicki wakes up. She throws a gelatin container at Matt. Matt stirs.]
"What the..."
"Finally you're awake."
"Hey. How are you feeling? You look better. I was worried before. You really had me freaked out with all that screaming."
"Wait, what are you talking about?"
"You don't remember?"
"I feel fine."
"Good, good. Doctor said you might be able to come home tomorrow. You just need a psychiatric evaluation. Vick, what attacked you in the woods?"
[Vicki hesitates.]
"An animal. What else could it have been?"
"That's not what you told me." Matt says with a pointed look, Vicki scoffs.
"What did I say attacked me then?"
Before Matt could answer, Jeremy knocks on the door.
"Hey. How do you feel?" Jeremy ponders warily.
"I'm doing better."
"I...I'm gonna...I'm gonna go grab a coffee. Hey, Jer." Matt greets Jeremy.
"Why are you here?" Vicki asks Jeremy once Matt leaves.
"I just wanted to see how you were doing."
"Did you see that look on Matt's face? That was suspicion. I don't want people to find out about us, Jeremy."
"Well, you gotta get over that, 'cause I'm not here like that."
"Tyler is finally showing some interest."
"You have to get over that, too. Do you see Mr. Concerned? Tyler? Are you under there? No."
"It's not cool for people to know. Ok? I'm older than you, and Matt and Elena would freak."
"I understand that. No one's going to suspect anything. And why wouldn't I check on you? I mean, I'm the one who found you."
"You are?"
"Yeah, I carried you out of the woods."
"Thank you."
"Yeah, you're welcome."
Salvatore Boarding House
[Elena goes to the front door and knocks, it opens and she enters.]
"Stefan? Stefan?" Elena calls out, trying to see if he's home.
[A crow flies into the house. Elena turns around and Damon is standing there.]
"Um. I...I'm sorry for barging in. The door was...open."
"You must be Elena. I'm Damon, Stefan's brother."
"Really? He didn't tell me he had a brother. He mentioned he had siblings but.. You two don't look related either."
"Well, Stefan's not one to brag. Please, come. I'm sure Stefan will be along any second." Damon ignores her last comment.
They walk into a large area.
"Wow. This is your living room?"
"Living room, parlor, Sotheby's auction. It's a little kitschy for my taste. I see why my brother's so smitten. It's about time. For a while there, I never thought he'd get over the last one. Nearly destroyed him."
"The last one?" She was deeply confused by what he was talking about.
"Yeah. Katherine, his girlfriend? Oh, you two haven't had the awkward exes conversation yet."
"No." Elena rolls her eyes and shivers softly as she starts getting uncomfortable.
"Oops. Well, I'm sure it'll come up now. Or maybe he didn't want to tell you because he didn't want you to think he was on the rebound. We all know how those relationships end."
"You say it like every relationship is doomed to end."
"I'm a fatalist. Hello, Stefan."
"Elena. I didn't know you were coming over. Couldn't give me a heads up?" Stefan states dryly walking into the house a bit more.
"I know. I should have called, I just..." Elena tries explaining herself but is cut off.
"Oh, don't be silly. You're welcome any time. Isn't she, Stefan? You know, I should break out the family photo albums or some home movies. But...I have to warn you. He wasn't always such a looker."
"Thank you for stopping by, Elena. Nice to see you." Stefan blankly states.
"Yeah, I should probably go. It was nice to meet you, Damon."
"Great meeting you, too, Elena."
[Stefan is blocking Elena's way as he glares at Damon.]
"Stefan....Stefan?" Elena calls out softly ready to go around him to leave.
[Stefan moves; Elena leaves.]
"Great gal. Whoo. She's got spunk. You, on the other hand, look pooped. Did you over-exert yourself today? Let me guess...hospital." Damon teases Stefan.
"Someone had to clean up your mess."
"Well, were you successful? Did the powers of persuasion work? Remember, if you don't feed properly, none of those little tricks work right." Damon continues to tease his younger brother.
"How long was Elena here?"
"Were you worried, Stefan? Scared we may be doomed to repeat the past? Isn't that why you play your little game, "I'm a high school human"?" Damon doesn't even realize that is exactly what's happening.
"I'm not playing any game."
"Of course you are. We both know the closest you'll ever get to humanity is when you rip it open and feed on it."
"What kind of game are you playing, Damon?"
"Guess you'll just have to wait and see, won't you?"
Gilbert Residence
"He's on the rebound and has raging family issues." Elena explains to Jenna after she gets comfortable in the house.
"Well, at least it's an ex-girlfriend. Wait till you date a guy with mommy issues or cheating issues. Or amphetamine issues."
[Jeremy enters the house.]
"Jeremy? Jeremy, where were you?" Jenna climbs off the couch and follows him to the steps.
"More stoner stories? Look, Jenna, I get it, you were cool. And so that's...that's cool." Jeremy's words are somewhat slurred and Jenna caught on.
"Oh, no, no, no!" Jenna grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl.
[Jenna throws an apple at Jeremy.]
"Ow! Why? Why...why did you do that?"
"Listen up! Quit ditching class or you're grounded. No discussion."
"Parental authority, I like it. Sleep tight." Jeremy heads up the stairs towards his room.
Hospital
[Vicki wakes up. She looks at Matt and sees him sleeping in a chair. She goes into the bathroom to wash her hands, when she looks into the mirror she sees a glimpse of Damon.]
"Matt. Mattie?"
[Matt turns into Damon with his vampire face. She wakes up from the nightmare screaming.]
Mystic Falls Town Square
[Elena and Bonnie are handing out pamphlets.]
"Tonight, night of the comet! Would you like a program?" Bonnie hands a pamphlet to some lady.
[She turns to Elena.]
"Would you like a program? He didn't call, huh?" She hands another pamphlet to someone.
"Or text. But I realized we never even exchanged that stuff. We've never gotten to the texting part."
"That's an important milestone in any relationship."
"Isn't it? The timing is wrong, anyway."
"When is it ever right?"
"I'm not ready, Bonnie."
"That's fine. Who is?"
"At least I put myself out there."
"Is that what you're calling it?"
"What do you mean?" Elena seemed a bit offended.
"All I'm hearing is reasons why you can't."
[Caroline sees Damon and approaches him. When she gets closer, he's gone.]
Salvatore Boarding House
"What is Damon doing here? Why did he come home?"
"'Cause I came home. He wants to make my life miserable. That's how he enjoys his."
"Well, he's putting us all at risk. This girl in the hospital could talk."
"She won't. I took care of her."
"You're sure?"
"I'm not sure, Zach. I don't know how well it worked. I'm not as strong as Damon."
"So what happens if it doesn't work?"
"I don't know. I'll deal with it."
"I won't let you kill a human. Is she worth it? Uncle Stefan, this girl you came back for? 'Cause I don't think she is."
Stefan stays quiet with a contemplative look on his face. He knows Zach is right, Elena isn't worth all of this, but he'll do it anyway.
Mystic Grill
"Vicki, what are you doing here?" Jeremy questions Vicki since she was supposed to still be in the hospital for another day.
"Fighting with Robert about my schedule. You'd think getting ripped up by a rabid animal would merit an extra sick day."
"Are you feeling ok?"
"I hurt."
"Well, the doctor gave you something, right?"
"The kid stuff. Nothing with an "o" in it. I think they were on to me."
[They laugh. Jeremy gives her pills.]
"Here. Knock yourself out, literally. Just be cautious and don't tear your stitches."
"Thanks, Jer."
"So you gonna, uh, watch the comet later?"
"I hadn't really thought about it. But I could be talked into it. I'll meet you out there in a few."
[Tyler approaches them.]
"Hey, Vick. How you feeling?" Tyler asks her trying to sound sincere.
"Like you care." Vicki rolls her eyes.
[Vicki leaves. Tyler catches Jeremy looking at him in a mocking manner.]
"What are you lookin' at, Gilbert?"
Mystic Falls Town Square
"Hey, I got some candles." Caroline hands a candle to Elena as Matt walks towards her.
"Hi. Hey." Elena greets him awkwardly.
"Hey."
[Matt lights Elena's candle.]
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
[Elena lights someone else's candle. She looks up and sees Stefan.]
"Thank you. Hi."
"Hi."
"You know, that comet...it's been traveling across space for thousands of years. All alone."
"Yeah, Bonnie says it's a harbinger of evil."
"I think it's just a ball of...snow and ice, trapped on a path that it can't escape. And once every 145 years, it gets to come home. I'm sorry about yesterday. I wasn't myself."
"You seem to spend a lot of time apologizing."
"Well, I have a lot to apologize for. Yesterday, that wasn't about you, ok?"
"You didn't tell me that you had a brother."
"No, I said I had a sibling that I didn't talk to. We're not close. It's, uh...it's complicated." Stefan corrects her.
"Always. He told me about your ex. Katherine."
"What did he say?"
"That she broke your heart."
"That was a long time ago."
"When you lose someone, it stays with you, always reminding you of how easy it is to get hurt."
"Elena..."
"It's OK, Stefan. I get it. You have no idea how much I get it. Complicated brother? Check. Complicated ex? Check. Too complicated to even contemplate dating, double check. It's OK. We met, and we talked, and it was epic, but...then the sun came up and reality set in. So..."
[Elena blows out her candle and walks away.]
Mystic Grill
[Vicki sees Damon and walks over to him.]
"I know you."
"Well, that's unfortunate."
"Um...I don't...I don't know how, but...your face. Excuse me. Sorry." Vicki stops herself abruptly.
[Vicki goes into the restroom and takes some pills. When she looks up into the mirror, Damon is behind her and attacks her. She screams.]
"Hey, has anyone seen Vicki?" Jeremy asks in concern.
"You're her stalker. You tell us." Tyler snapped at the younger boy.
"I can't find her. I wouldn't be asking if I knew where she was." Jeremy retorted quickly.
"She probably found somebody else to party with. Sorry, pill pusher, I guess you've been replaced."
"What's with the pill pusher?" Elena asks in confusion.
"Ask him." Tyler says smirking.
"You wanna do this right now?" Jeremy moved forward ready to fight him.
"Are you dealing?" Elena asks, pushing her little brother backwards.
"She's never gonna go for you."
"She already did. Over and over and over again." Jeremy gloats proudly.
"Yeah, right."
"Woah, Woah!? You slept with Vicki Donovan? I mean, Vicki Donovan slept with you? That's illegal. If you're going to have sex do it with someone your age." Caroline stated in slight shock, not wanting her best frenemies little brother to go to jail.
"There's no way." Tyler scoffed out in disbelief.
"Oh yeah. And I didn't even have to force her into it."
"What the hell is he talking about, Ty?" This caught Matt's attention.
"Nothing, man, just ignore him, he's a punk."
"You know what, how about all of you shut the hell up and help me find my sister? How about that." Matt had finally had enough. And he surely wasn't going to let the previous statements go.
"We'll check the back." Bonnie let Matt know before heading off, whilst texting Asia in case she sees anything however minuscule.
"I'll check the square." Matt runs off to look for his older sister.
"I'll come with you." Jeremy tries to go after him.
"Oh, no, no, no. You are coming with me. So that's your game now, dealing? And having sex with an 18 year old!" Once they're in a private corner, Elena lets herself blow up at him.
"I'm not dealing. And it's none of your business who I sleep with."
"Bull. Look, I'm sick of the tough love speech, Jer. It's clearly having no impact. Vicki is 18, she could go to prison. The courts don't care if it was consensual. They will put her in prison."
"You and Jenna, between the two of you. Enough already!"
"We can stop if you want. Send you to a therapist where you'll be forced to deal with it or to rehab where you'll sit in group and tell some stranger how you let your life fall apart. Or you could talk to me."
"I vote for none of the above. And you leave Vicki alone."
Street
"Hey." Matt sees Stefan as he continues to check the square.
"Hey."
"Have you seen my sister?"
"No, sorry."
"I can't find her. She's missing."
"I'll keep an eye out for her."
[Stefan starts to leave.]
"Hey. I saw you at the hospital yesterday."
"Did you? Ok." Stefan tries to play it cool.
"What were you doing there?"
"Visiting."
"Visiting? You know, Elena and I, we've known each other for a long time. We might not be together right now or ever anymore, but I look out for her. She's still my friend. And I'll always look out for her."
[Stefan hears a scream nearby, followed by Damon and Vicki's voices.]
"You really have to stop screaming."
"No, please, stop. Don't..." Vicki begs Damon, trying to pull herself up from the ledge.
"Shh. I got you..." Damon continues to 'comfort' Vicki.
"Excuse me." Stefan excuses himself.
[He leaves.]
[Stefan sees Damon and Vicki. He jumps on the roof.]
"No! No!" Vicki continues to panic and scream.
"Shh, I'm not gonna drop you." Damon tells Vicki.
"Not bad. Have you been eating bunnies?"
"Let her go." Stefan orders Damon.
"Shh. Really? Ok."
[Damon pulls Vicki to the edge of the roof.]
"No!" Vicki cries out in fear.
"No, no, no!" Stefan runs to grab Vicki and pull her to safety.
[Damon throws Vicki to Stefan.]
"Ugh! Relax." Damon grunted out.
"What's happening?" Vicki was scared and confused.
"I don't need her to be dead, but...you might." Damon looks at Stefan maliciously.
"What attacked you the other night?" Damon asks turning to Vicki.
"I don't know. An animal. Why do you care?"
"Are you sure about that? Think. Think about it. Think really hard. What attacked you?" Damon ignores her question.
"A vampire."
"Who did this to you?" Damon repeats once again.
"You did!" Vicki yells at him in anger.
"Wrong!" Damon yells out, getting agitated.
"Don't."
"It was Stefan."
"Don't." Stefan continues to beg and plead.
"Come here."
[Damon grabs Vicki on both sides of her head and compels her.]
"Stefan Salvatore did this to you."
"Stefan Salvatore did this to me." Vicki sounds so lifeless it would have scared him if he was human.
"He's a vampire. A vicious, murderous monster."
"Please, Damon. Please don't do this." Stefan begs his brother.
"If you couldn't fix it before, I don't know what you can do now."
[Damon pulls off Vicki's bandage and throws her to Stefan. He then walks towards them.]
"Aah!" She cries out in pain.
"Ugh! Your choice of lifestyle has made you weak. A couple of vampire parlor tricks is nothing compared to the power that you could have, that you now need. But you can change that. Human blood gives you that."
"No!" Vicki tries to run, Damon drags her back.
"You have two choices. You can feed and make her forget. Or you can let her run, screaming "vampire" through the town square."
"That's what this is about? You want to expose me?" Stefan can't figure out his plan for his own life.
"No! I want you to remember who you are!" Damon shouts in anger.
"Why? So what, so I'll feed? So I'll kill? So I'll remember what it's like to be brothers again? You know what, let her go. Let her tell everyone that vampires have returned to Mystic Falls. Let them chain me up, and let them drive a stake through my heart, because at least I'll be free of you."
"Huh. Huh. Wow. Come here, sweetheart." Damon orders Vicki. But she denies.
"No!" Vicki cries out in fear. Damon forcefully grabs her.
"It's OK."
[Damon whispers something into Vicki's ear and she becomes fine.]
"What happened? Where am I? Oh, I ripped my stitches open. Ugh..."
"You Okay?" Stefan grabs her softly and with such concern.
"I took some pills, man. I'm good." Vicki says in a slow tone.
[Vicki leaves.]
"It's good to be home. Think I might stay a while. This town could use a bit of a wake-up call, don't you think?"
"What are you up to, Damon?"
"That's for me to know and for you to...dot dot dot. Give Elena my best."
Mystic Grill
[Matt helps Vicki with her bandage. Stefan walks up to them.]
"She said you found her wandering around."
"Yeah."
"So, um, thanks."
[Caroline and Bonnie are seated at another table.]
"Ugh, it's just so much drama. Ever notice how the druggies are the biggest attention whores?" Caroline snaps annoyed.
"Don't say that. It's rude." Bonnie says in a motherly tone.
"Excuse me. Hi." Stefan walks up towards their table.
"Hi." Bonnie greets back.
"Um, have you guys seen Elena?"
"I think she went home. I'm gonna give you Elena's cell number and her email. She is big on texting, and you can tell her..."I said so"."
"Thank you." Stefan thanks her, smiling.
[Bonnie touches Stefan's hand and has a vision.]
"You ok?" He was confused as to why she spaced out so abruptly.
"What the hell happened to you? That's so rude. I'm sorry. Excuse me." Bonnie runs off towards the bathroom.
[Caroline looks at Stefan.]
"Yeah, she kind of wigs out. It's like her thing."
Gilbert Residence
[Elena goes into Jeremy's room. Jenna is searching his room.]
"Jer?"
"No, it's me, the hypocrite patrol."
"What are you doing?"
"I've become my worst nightmare. The authority figure who has to violate a 15-year-old's privacy."
Jenna checks his shoes.
"Jackpot. I see the hiding places haven't gotten any more creative."
"What brought this on?" She asks sitting in Jeremy's window.
"Your ass-hat of a history teacher shamed me good yesterday."
"You got Tannered. Been there."
"Discover the impossible, Ms. Sommers." Got it. Thanks. Like I didn't know I was screwing up."
"You're not screwing up, Aunt Jenna." Elena consoles her Aunt.
"Yes, I am. You know why? Because I'm not her. She made everything look so easy. You know, high school, marriage, having you. I can't do it. I'm gonna say or do the wrong thing, and he's gonna get worse, overdose and die and it's gonna be my fault. It's impossible."
"This is just the fear talking. You're a little scared, that's all. We all are. I have to go do something. But are you going to be ok?"
Mystic Grill
[Jeremy enters. He sees Vicki and smiles. Tyler walks up to her and they start kissing. Jeremy leaves with a sad look on his face.]
[Caroline is walking to her car. She hears something and stops. She gets to her car, drops her keys, and stands up. Damon is in front of her.]
"Oh...whoa." Caroline jumps back slightly.
"Sorry. Didn't mean to scare you." Damon sounds sincere, but we all know it's a lie.
"No, it's fine. Um...I was hoping I'd see you again."
"I know."
"Cocky much?" Caroline insults him.
Yet it did nothing to deter him from his plan.
"Very much." He smirks.
Salvatore Boarding House
[Elena rings the bell. Stefan answers it.]
"Hi."
"Hey."
"Would you like to come in?"
"The comet's actually this way."
[Elena goes out. Stefan follows her.]
"Sorry for barging in. Especially after earlier." Elena apologizes.
"No, no. I'm glad you're here. The way we left things...I didn't like it."
"See, the thing is, I got home tonight planning on doing what I always do, write in my diary, like I have been since my mom gave me one when I was 10. It's where I get everything out, everything I'm feeling. It all goes in this little book that I hide on the second shelf behind this really hideous ceramic mermaid. But then I realized that I'd just be writing things that I should probably be telling you."
"What would you write?"
"I would write..."Dear diary, today I convinced myself it was ok to give up. Don't take risks. Stick with the status quo. No drama, now is just not the time. But my reasons aren't reasons, they're excuses. All I'm doing is hiding from the truth, and the truth is that..." I'm scared, Stefan. I'm scared that if I let myself be happy for even one moment that...the world's just going to come crashing down, and I...don't know if I can survive that."
"Do you want to know what I would write? "I met a girl. We talked. It was epic. But then the sun came up and reality set in. Well, this is reality. Right here."
[They kiss.]
Forbes Residence
[Damon is kissing Caroline's stomach. All of a sudden, his face transforms and he bites her.]
"Aah!" Caroline cries out in pain.
A/n
Not too much of Asia and Co, new chapter will be a much better introduction of Asia's Mama and Grams. So it'll sorta stray from the storyline a little bit but I'll try to make it fit.
Chapter 5: Sheila & Thea
Summary:
Old Friends
Chapter Text
Three weeks earlier
Mama walked through the large house, still with some unpacked boxes. Walking into the living room, she sees her daughters sitting on the couch, arguing about where to put the family portrait.
"Girls! Girls! Just put over the fireplace."
Luna looked up towards the fireplace, grabbing the large portrait, imagining it hanging there.
"Ah. I like it. We're hanging it there." Luna reaches up and places the large portrait over the fireplace, before turning towards her mom.
"Where are you headed to, all dressed up?"
"Not that it's any of your business. I'm going to go see a friend of mine."
"Is it business, business or just old friend business?" Athena questioned, standing up ready to head out with her mom.
"Girl, sit your butt down. She's a friend. I'll call you girls if I need backup help. Need I remind you, I am a witch, just like all of you."
Athena looked down softly as she sat back down onto the couch.
"Well at least tell us this friends name, so we know who we're looking for?" Theresa spoke up, rolling her eyes at her sister.
"Sheila Bennett."
Sheila Bennett Household
Amalthea walks down the small driveway of the home of Sheila Bennett, making her way up her porch steps.
Knocking softly, she waits patiently. Hearing footsteps coming towards the door, she takes a small breath, smiling softly.
Yet instead of an older woman, a teenage girl answered the door, around Asia's age. She feels a tingling sensation go throughout her body. Amalthea blinks before quickly recovering.
"Hi. Can I help you?" The girl asks politely. Thea thinks she's at the wrong house for a moment before remembering Sheila mentioned she has a granddaughter.
"Hello, I'm Amalthea. I was looking for Sheila Bennett. We're old friends." Thea summarizes why she's here. The girl smiles brightly.
"I'm Bonnie. Grams is in the basement. Please come in." Bonnie steps to the side, letting Thea pass. Once they settle inside the living room, the conversation naturally starts to flow.
"Grams doesn't talk about her friends much. Truthfully, I was beginning to wonder if she really had any." Bonnie spoke her latter sentence in a hushed tone, but Thea heard her perfectly.
Thea chuckled softly, smiling at the girl. This makes Bonnie smile once more, at that moment the two women hear a set of steps coming into the room.
"Thea?" Sheila stopped herself abruptly, looking from her granddaughter to her friend.
"Is it really you?"
"Yes, I'm here. I would've called, but I wanted to surprise you." Thea stands up taking a cautious step forward as Bonnie watches the two women.
"Oh, I can't believe you're here. You're really here!" Sheila rushes towards her old friend and embraces her in a tight hug. The two women laugh and cry out in joy.
27 minutes later
"Oh. Your grandkids are beautiful." Sheila praises Thea on her family.
"Thank you. If you don't mind me asking, where's Abby? I don't see her around." At this question, Bonnie who had been quietly watching the two older women talk, tenses up.
"She left. We don't talk about it much." Sheila answers, having seen her granddaughter tense up.
"I'm so sorry. My mother left me when I was a child as well." Thea expresses her sympathy towards the young woman. "If you would ever like to talk, I'm here."
Bonnie nods, feeling somewhat less pitiful of herself.
After about another hour of talking to her friend and her friends granddaughter, Thea got up to go home.
"Here is my address, if you need anything or just want to talk to someone, come to me. My family would love to help as well." Bonnie smiles at Thea, taking the piece of paper before heading upstairs to her room.
With that, Sheila walks Thea to the door, yet before she leaves she asks a very important question.
"Does she know?" Thea steps outside of the house, turning towards Sheila.
"No. I tell her a little bit about it, but she just thinks I'm a crazy old drunk."
"Show her. Guide her. She has so much power. I know you're doing your best right now, but if you don't get her to believe, she'll doubt herself and her power. I can sense she has great power, unlike anything I’ve ever seen.
Sheila nods, before hugging Thea.
Thea drives back home and when she gets inside the house, she heads straight for Asia's room ready to tell her about The Bennett Family and The Creed Family and their legacies.
The legacies of Old friends.
