Chapter 1: THE MADMAN AND THE AVATAR MEET
Chapter Text
"So like, do you have a few screws loose in your head or were you born crazy?"
________
"Y/N?" A meek voice called out, hesitantly peeking into the hallway.
"Y/N, are you there? Please inform me if you're experimenting or n-" A scream followed her sentence as a flurry of green and pink particles quickly zoomed past the poor assistant, making her fall onto the carpeted floor.
Thankfully, the commotion settled down as the hallway was now clear of any suspicious particles or smoke. Though, it was still a mess.
"Oh Erys! I can't wait to show you a breakthrough I just made!" Someone shouted out, emerging from one of the rooms. A tall figure clad in pink, green and white kneeled to where Erys was, a goofy smile on their face.
"Y-yeah.. but please go clean yourself first."
Wiping the colour off their aviator goggles, they revealed the excitement in their E/C eyes. "Oh Erys! Don't sweat the small stuff, we can do that later! Anyways, I was trying to-"
The brunette sighed, knowing nothing can stop them when they're this excited. It was a charming aspect of their personality afterall.
Following after them, Erys smiled. She couldn't lie that she wasn't the tiniest bit excited too.
===
"Going into the city again Miss Y/N?" Erys asked, putting away a couple of reports. The madman hummed, nodding their head. "I need to get some moon peaches and a couple strands of giant fly hairs!"
Sweating at the odd ingredient, Erys tapped at the desk. "I don't think fly hair and raccoon monkey intestines will make your fruit fly..Why don't you send someone out like usual?"
"I can't always be stuck inside, I need to get some in the field research! Anyways, I'll be out now, rest well Erys!!"
And with that, you exited the building, ignoring Erys' protests.
"I pray for the safety of whoever is in their way this time..." Erys thought, cleaning up her desk.
THE MADMAN'S MEDICINE AND ODDWARES!
That was the business you were born into. Your folks had started out small, selling small homemade gizmos and providing medicine from the ol' book of water tribe traditions.
Soon after, they made a name for themselves until they had you!
Y/N L/N-Baruch, a child genius and natural observer of things was just what they needed to boost the family business!
Though, Y/N thought that medicine was too easy to deal with so they had begun the experiments.
Nothing creepy and overly extreme of course! They're just a bit of a madman, hence the business' name! Although the business is going extremely well and has been gaining popularity amongst noblemen, Y/N's parents had volunteered as figureheads.
The face of the company, the ones on the news, the people involved in events, that was all them.
So no one actually knew the actual madman behind the screen. Thus, people had made rumours about said "madman". But you didn't mind, it gave a small thrill to your life. So you had remained a secret.
"Hey have you heard? The madman is making some kinda new medicine! Do you think they'll release it to the public soon?"
"Really? Well.. wouldn't we profit a lot if we got a tiny lil' peek? We'd be millionaires!"
"But.. do you guys know who the madman is?"
"..."
"Madman who?" You asked enthusiastically, observing the fruit in front of you. Your sudden presence had startled the grannies, making them wave at you.
"Oh oh! Y/N dear! Here to get some fruits again?" The old woman, Granny YuMing, smiled warmly at you. She knew of your position in the business and she often heard gossip but she kept her lips sealed. What a kind woman.
"Yes, the usual and do you have the assortment I asked for?" Nodding her head, she reached behind the booth and gave you a box, her touch gentle and careful.
"My grandchild managed to gather everything right after you asked! They're an eager young person you know!"
"They get their genes from you! You were active in your youth no?" She chuckled, giving your shoulder a good slap as you two part ways. Just as you left, you though of visiting some other places you hadn't in a while.
"Whoopsie, I've done it again." You thought, noticing that you had walked aimlessly into another street. "Oh hey, what's that over the-"
"Watch it bastard!" A man screamed, standing along two others. However, you ignored them, observing the intricate design on the glass cup you had spotted.
Irritated with your ignorance, the supposed leader grabbed the back of your coat and yanked you hard. The motion made you stumble to the ground, staring at the man with confusion.
The man however, appreciated the reaction, putting on a smirk. "Next time, if you don't-"
"Sir, that was extremely rude." You said sternly, standing up and dusting your coat. "Don't you know simple manners? Or perhaps you were neglected as a child? Do you suffer from some sort of emotional distress-"
"SHUT UP YOU BAS- UGH! I've had enough of you, boys, take car- ARGHH!"
Intense eyes stared at him as he moved awkwardly, his body retreating to the ground. His muscles cramped up and he finally gave up, muttering in pain as his buddies gasped.
Rashes and red spots started appearing on his skin and he desperately tried to scratch it all, causing it to worsen.
"Cool right? I managed to sneak some specially modified cream onto you. Rash cactus juice and a little white dragon bush to cramp you up AND give you terrible skin. I'm pretty sure makeup companies would HATE it though!" You smiled cheekily as he looked at you in horror. His two friends looked less than friendly as they swung at you, bending at you to keep the distance.
"You seem to forget that you're in Triple Threat Triad territory! Just one phone call and you'll regret-"
"Regret what?" Another voice spoke. Footsteps emerged beside you and a tall, brown haired muscular woman stood in front of you, cracking her knuckles. She had a reckless kind of air to her and you took note to not do anything careless just yet.
"T-trying to play h-hero? You and y-your- argh! friend t-there aren't gonna have a pleasant day if you mess with us!" The leader struggled, pain still visible in his voice.
You laugh slightly. "That's big talk coming from someone who can't even stand up to me!" The sheer excitement in your voice caught them off guard and to be honest, a little creeped out. The girl got in a stance, definitely ready for a fight and they went two on one while you stood by at the sidelines, observing their movements calmly.
"There's no need for combat at a time like this but this girl.. seems to have a few cards up her sleeves." Your inner hypothesis proved true when you witness her do two other bending techniques.
"Fascinating, she's using more than one- wait, is she the Avatar?" The sudden discovery excited you so much that you subconsciously let out an excited squeal and the two goons had suddenly remembered you were there.
Smirking at each other, they distracted Korra and headed straight for you, seeing you as a vulnerable target.
Snapping out of her sudden trance, Korra lunged towards you, panic filling her eyes before both of the goons stopped right in front of you in awkward positions.
They both cried for help before their bodies were forcefully slammed onto the hard ground, red spots taking over their skin. They screamed in pain, desperately trying to scratch their skin but even the slightest movement prevented them from doing such a simple gesture.
"You're the Avatar, aren't you?" You smiled brightly, eyes not blinking and practically bulging out as you make your way towards her.
Korra picked up the two thugs and threw them alongside their boss, sweating awkwardly at your sudden outburst. "Yeah, glad to finally meet someone who recognizes me." She muttered out a little proudly before glaring at the crying BIT- I mean, thugs on the ground.
"I don't know why they're like that, is this some sort of new Avatar power I have? WAIT, THAT WOULD BE SO CO-"
"Actually, I just slapped some cream on them earlier." You said bluntly, cutting Korra's excitement short. She pouted but also dismissed the feeling.
"Cream..? I don't think cream does that-"
"DON'T WORRY, I'LL TELL YOU ALL ABOUT IT! BUT FIRST, WHAT'S YOUR NAME? WHAT'S IT LIKE BEING THE AVATAR? IS THAT A POLAR BEAR DOG? WHICH TRI-"
"Okay, slow down Mr. Eager, you should get me dinner first-"
"Sure can do! We'll eat the best food in the city, I already have a reservation ready!"
"Wait what-"
"Oh, and I'll obviously get your polar bear dog some gourmet as well!"
"... I could get used to this."
Chapter 2: AIR TEMPLE ISLAND
Chapter Text
"You probably think everyone's living it up here, don't you?"
________
Erys flinched at the sudden tapping, glancing towards the madman's bored face. They've been sitting in silence for hours now, the woman staring worriedly at Y/N.
Unfortunately, they didn't go through with dinner yesterday since the Avatar, or rather Korra, was dragged towards the police station. Seeing as nobody witnessed you since you seemed like a generic bystander, which you were not, they let you go in a matter of minutes.
You were gonna protest but Korra looked at you with a "Don't tell em nothing about your crazy ass cream" and you just obliged.
Now, you were just trying to distract yourself as you waited for any news about Korra's whereabouts.
"Any news, Erys?" You asked, not even hiding your boredom as you wrote down possible ingredients for your next batch of experiments.
The brunette re-adjusted her coat, getting on the phone. While she did the talking, you decided that you'd work on plans for one of the newest ideas you came up, something that will possibly come in handy.
Maybe Korra would even help.
"Y/N sir, they've reported that she was released shortly after Chairman Tenzin came yesterday. They've witnessed them getting on a boat to Air Temple Island." Erys reported, looking more professional than she was earlier.
You nod enthusiastically, standing up and slamming your hands onto the table, startling Erys once again.
"I'll be making my way to Air Temple Island later then! That's probably where she'll reside in for now. Cancel all of my meetings for today, I have work to do!" You smiled cheekily, running out the door.
Before you even made it to the labs, Erys pulled you back quickly, making you trip in the process.
"Sir, you have a very important appointment with Mr. Sato! He's been meaning to discuss with you and your parents for a while now." She said worriedly, almost in a scolding manner.
You rubbed your chin in thought, dragging a long hum.
"He wanted to discuss joining forces no? I would've rejected it anyway. Just cancel the meeting. Tell him something about independence or something." Erys deadpanned at you, giving you a "wtf is that excuse" face.
"What?? His technology and my science do NOT work! He's too uh.. generic? And too strict on safety." Letting go of your coat, Erys nodded, turning towards the direction of her office.
Slipping on your goggles, you chuckled, sprinting towards the lab.
"Time to put my skills to the test!"
Crazy laughter emitted from the room, scaring all the employees nearby.
>>>
Tenzin watched as Korra got brutally beaten up by the spinning gates, getting thrown out at the last minute. He sighed, pinching his temples as Korra shouted profanities at the machine.
Suddenly, a shiver went up his spine and he turned behind him, as well as the other kids. He had sensed some kind of shift in the wind before something came out of the water.
The five of them made their way there, looking at the small vortex in the water before a table emerged with someone sipping tea, the tower of water overshadowing them.
Y/N put down the cup of tea and shot their hands up, greeting them cheerfully.
"HELLLLLL-O! RESIDENTS OF AIR TEMPLE ISLAND AND KORRA!" You shouted excitedly, jumping off from the tower of water as Korra frantically caught you in her arms.
"Hmm, no airbending yet huh?" You asked curiously as she sighed, putting you down.
You bowed at Tenzin and his children before asking them various questions.
"Tenzin, guys, this is Y/N! We met on my first day here, she was uh, at the scene." Korra introduced, still slightly embarrassed from mentioning the incident.
"Wait, what are you doing here anyway? And how did you know I was here?" Korra asked, scratching her nape. You chuckled, putting an arm around her.
"It isn't hard to miss a giant White Lotus ship with an angry teenager on it!" Jinora, Meelo and Ikki stifled their laughter while Tenzin sighed for the 100th time today.
"And the reason I came here is that I wanted to invite you to hangout! See the sights, eat the food, you know! Hanging out stuff!"
Tenzin put a hand on your shoulder, looking at you apologetically. "I'm sorry but Korra mustn't leave the island. She has to focus fully on her training."
"Aww, but Dad, can't she stay? Pretty pleaseee-!" Ikki whined, dragging on her words. Tenzin made the funniest face you've ever seen, obviously embarrassed when Jinora and Meelo started chiming in as well.
"Fine, fine! Ahem, Y/N, you can stay for dinner if you'd like. My children seem to be eager of your presence." He said formally.
You stroked your imaginary moustache, pretending to think it over before you loudly agreed. The kids cheered and immediately pulled you away from Tenzin and Korra.
A single tear went down Korra's cheek as she made a playfully hurt expression, making you all laugh.
>>>
Maybe you were bored but you stayed another day on the island.
Night had fallen a lot quicker than you expected but you were starving anyway. Thankfully, you managed to inform Erys about your stay and she promised to deal with the company for a few days.
All day long, you witnessed Korra's training, you might've even wanted to joined in a little! But you were enamoured with several exotic plants in the gardens and also the structure of the island itself.
Who knew an island that looked so small from afar would actually be really packed with places to venture in? Perspective am I right?
You both sat next to each other during dinner and you really liked the food, it was tasty! There was conversation here and there but you were tuning it all out at the moment, thinking about the materials you'd need for your recent experiment. It was until Korra nudged you that you snapped out of your trance, smiling at the family.
"Ahem, Y/N I was just asking if you like the food?" You nodded enthusiastically, making Pema smile with satisfaction. "It's wonderful to know that Korra is making some friends here during her stay. Take care of her will you?"
Korra huffed, eating her rice aggressively. Tenzin cleared his throat, catching everyone's attention. "I hope we're not keeping you from anything Y/N. Do you usually have dinner with your parents?" He asked, trying to soothe the intense stiffness in the air.
You shook your head. "My parents are usually attending events or meetings so I usually eat with Erys! Though there are a few occasions where we eat together but it's always some fancy shmancy restaurant. The food is luxurious yeah but it gets bland over time ya know?" They all blinked in unison at your statement.
"Oh well, you're welcome to visit us if you want to have dinner again. I think the kids really like your company." Pema answered, wiping Meelo's mouth. "Say, you're a water bender right? Did you and Korra meet before in the Southern Water Tribe?"
"Oh yeah, how did we not bump into each other? I mean, I don't know everybody but I would've at least recognized your name..." Korra chimed in, trying to down the delicious meal.
"My parents had me in the city, they don't really talk about any of my relatives though." Your answer was short and vague but they didn't press any further and finished up their meals.
===
"Korra?"
"Y/N?"
You both blurt out each others' names in unison before Korra made a shushing motion. You covered your mouth with one hand and gave her a thumbs up as she sighed. She gestured for you to follow her down towards the rocks and you nodded.
"What are you doing here? Are you sneaking out too?" She asked, finally letting her guard down. You shook your head, pointing towards the edge of the island.
"I was just gonna check out a cave on the island. I haven't gotten around to exploring yet, there might be ingredients I could use!" Shaking off your excited and to be honest crazed look, Korra pointed towards the city.
"Hey, do you think we can go to the city instead? Having a guide would be nice." You agreed and she fist bumped the air.
She grabbed you and threw you into the water, alarming you until she dived in herself and you guys zoomed on over.
Chapter 3: WELCOME TO REPUBLIC CITY
Chapter Text
"This could go wrong in so many ways!"
________
After gracefully, ahem I mean, painfully landing on your butt, you find that Korra had accidentally flung you a few feet away from where she had landed. You stand up in the hallway, trying to find anything implying of an entrance or exit.
Eventually you heard voices, arguing maybe but it quickly died down. You quickly walked towards the place and cupped a hand to your mouth.
"Korra!" You dragged out her name, hopeful that she might've heard you. You reach an entrance to another room and took a peek inside.
Your E/C eyes met with gleaming emerald ones. "Y/N! I thought I lost you!" You peeled your eyes away from Bolin and happily smiled at Korra, jumping at her as she hugged you back.
"Oh, is this the friend you were talking about? She's uh, very physical." The owner of those magnificent green eyes spoke and you averted your attention to him.
"Oh, you must be the one who- WOAH!" Your attention was caught again by the view behind him. The place served as a sort of balcony and preparation centre and you could see the match from there too. You rushed over there and gripped the fence.
"Oh wow! You can see a pro-bending match way better here and with the help of my goggles, I'll definitely see every single detail!" In the midst of excitement, you accidentally got a little too close to the edge and slipped on the metal gate.
Before you were sent to see God personally, a hand managed to grab onto your coat and forcefully yank you back. Your back hits the ground and you see an irritated face belonging to one of the players.
"Bolin I told you, no more crazy fangirls." He said with a sigh before putting one his helmet. Yeah, you don't really like this guy and it was obvious.
You jump back onto your feet and jabbed a finger onto Mako's chest, startling him. "Maybe you should be nicer to people, I might be crazy but at least I'm not mad all the time!"
Hearing no response, you take it as a win and huff. Korra gave you a pat on the head and Bolin apologised before joining his brother. "Oh man they were attractive-" Was all that played in Mako's mind before he shook his head. Korra laughed, giving you a little pat on the shoulder.
You both watch the match with excitement and Korra seemed to really enjoy it. In the midst of the match, you felt your spine jolt with a piercing pain. Your eyes instinctively glanced over to the crowd and you see a hooded figure flinch slightly before retreating to the darkness.
Your vision blurred and you put a onto your forehead, sweat beginning to form. Everything came to just as the announcer cheered for the Fire Ferrets' victory and the crowd went wild.
Korra was too distracted to notice but you figured you shouldn't interrupt a golden moment like this.
"WOOHOO! Yeah! One more win and we're in the championship tournament!" Bolin cheered after returning to Korra's side. He took of his helmet, doing finger guns at you.
"So, what do you think Y/N- Huh?" His tone dropped when he saw a surprisingly neutral and slightly serious face, different from how you were earlier. You were still staring at where the hooded figure retreated, thinking hard.
That face looked surprisingly thoughtful to him, like he was the only one who has ever even seen it. At least, that's what his lovey-dovey romantic fantasy filled brain told him.
Korra turned to Y/N eventually and caught just a glimpse before they reverted back to their usual demeanor. "Oh wow, Bolin you were really rocking the show! Too bad Mako stole the spotlight!" A mischievous grin that would've suited you seemed out of place right now, at least that's what Bolin thought but he brushed it off.
"Yeah, Bolin's got some moves!" He returned the same energy until Mako and Hasook finally arrived. They seemed to be having a one sided argument and man was Hasook rude. Ruder than madface Mako, though you didn't really appreciate him calling Hasook useless either.
You seemed to be tuning out again when Korra tapped your shoulder, gaining your attention. "Y/N, this place is AMAZING! I've been immersed in bending my whole life but this.. this is a whole other league!" She excitedly ranted to which Bolin chimed in.
"Think you could show me a few tricks?"
"Absooo-lutely!" Mako replied with some kinda grumble but you didn't bother learning the language of dying worms so you ignored him.
"Just ignore him. Yeah, I could show you the basics. Although I'm just not sure how my earth-bending would translate to your water bending." He replied, seemingly thinking. "..But we'll figure it out."
You chuckle, waving your hand around. "That's no problemo for my friendo here!" You almost seemed affection with the way you confidently backed up Korra. "She can earthbend! And she's a pretty damn good one at that!" Korra blushed in pride, crossing her arms.
Bolin seemed to stop in his tracks, his hands fumbling around. "I'M SORRY- No no! I didn't mean to assume cause I- uh you know, was just figuring with your water tribe get-up that you are a.. water tribe gal." He said awkwardly.
You stifle your laughs, pulling up your goggles to let your tears spill through. "No, you're right. I'm a waterbender and a firebender." She replied smugly which seemed to stroke her ego.
Bolin mumbled confusedly and Mako sighed. "You're the Avatar and I'm an idiot." You pat Mako's back to which he looked the other way, full of irritation. "That's so true, didn't catch you as the honest and humble type!" You laugh at him mockingly as he rolled his eyes at you.
===
You comfortably sat on the staircase, watching Bolin teach Korra some probending techniques while Mako leaned on the rails.
"So uh, who are you supposed to be? The Avatar's mongoosecat?" The bag of worms beside you asked and you tap the back of his head. "Uh uh ah! That's not very nice of you to ask! And I'm so very clearly her friend, you bag of rotting whale carcasses." You mumbled the last insult quietly and he turned to you.
"What?"
"Okay, let me try it again." You clapped at Korra's improvement and she smiled at you. Mako raised a brow. "Not bad." You glared at him and Korra chuckled.
"You think you can do any better?" Mako asked with annoyance.
"I'm not one for sport but I can do this!" You pull back your hand and throw something at Mako to which he expertly caught with his hand. "Seriously? Are you still a kid-"
Seeing your retreating form, he glanced at what he caught and saw what looked to be
"Stink bomb!" You shouted out gleefully.
Let's just say that he needed a serious shower after that.
>>>
You heard a knock on the window beside you, causing you to glance up from your latest work. Korra waved at you, seemingly amazed.
You opened the garage door and she immediately gawked at everything. "Whoa, I knew you were crazy but I didn't know you were a crazy scientist!" She pointed towards several round capsules on your desk, the ones you had been working on.
"What are those?" You chuckle, beckoning her closer. "Remember that stink bomb I threw at Mako? Well, I actually use them for something other than elaborate pranks. I didn't really have a use for them until now but I'm hoping I will." You explained her how to use it and she immediately geeked out.
You then noticed a package she was holding with your business symbol on it. "Oh Korra, what are you holding?" She glanced at the package and smiled, holding it out to you.
"You've lived way longer in the city than I have, I would've thought you knew what Madman's was by now!" She flipped out a patch and immediately stuck it to your forehead and you felt relaxed. Of course, you were familiar with your own work.
"These are some pain relief patches from Madman's, Pema recommended them to me because of the training. I brought some for Bolin and Mako too. To help with their probending that is." Aww, that was so sweet of Korra.
"Oh, we better head over to the match. I have a motorcycle we can use to get there quicker."
"Whoa, you ride?"
"Yeah but I prefer blimps or planes."
"HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS?!"
===
"Hey Y/N, you're not wearing your usual goggles." Bolin pointed out, making Korra turn to look at you. "Oh yeah, I didn't notice."
"I'm gonna use these to get a better look at the match. Plus I'd get to see Korra this time too! I can't miss a single detail." That was partially the truth but you couldn't risk worrying them about some mysterious hooded figure who may or may not be evil.
You sighed, watching the three of them depart to the ring. You were excited that Korra got to be the replacement but you can't help but feel like something bad is gonna happen. Your hunch had proven correct when Korra was immediately pushed back a space.
Suddenly the same piercing pain came back and you immediately turn towards the crowd, seeing the same hooded figure. You locked onto your target and discreetly made your way to the crowd and chased after them. Sensing you, they immediately bolted.
It seems a commotion had happened in the match because everyone was gasping, some even dramatically standing up in their seats. "Oh no you don't-!" You grasped onto the hooded figure's cloak and you two had a little game of tug of war.
Eventually they pulled you out of the crowd but you managed to hold on tight. In a but of distress, they blinded you with some kind of light and took off their cloak, escaping into the darkness.
Regaining your vision, you groaned and rubbed your eyes. "Damn it, they were a weasel!" But alas, you managed to get some sort of evidence. You stuffed it into your bag to inspect further later. The nearest exit was only a few minutes away so you opted to walk there and find a cheering Tenzin
"Y-Y/N??? Ahem I mean, good to see you again Y/N." He immediately fixed his posture, coughing into his fist. You waved at him, stifling your laughs. "Tenzin, I thought you didn't like probending matches?" You tilt your head and Tenzin looked away sheepishly.
"Uh, um, well, I just came to uh, get Korra but.. I think they're doing well on their own right now. I'll be heading back now, goodbye." And with that he left. You chuckle, waving at Korra before leaving to get to them.
===
"Congrats guys! Hugs for everyone, yes, you're included you slimeball!"
"Seriously? I thought you were over the insults."
You ran to them with open arms and the first to receive your hug attack was Bolin who accepted it with a smile. You two laugh as you moved on to the whale ca- I mean, Mako who you gave a side hug that crushed his bones a little and finally-
"We won!" Korra had her arms open as you jump onto her unexpectedly and she spun you around. Placing you back down, you pulled out a round capsule and pressed a button, making everyone freak out.
"Celebration bomb!"
All four of you ended up being a colourful, glittery mess.

"Are you just rich or do you work for the Mafia?"
________
"30,000 Yuans?"
"YEAH THAT'S LIKE, A CRAZY AMOUNT OF DOUGH!" Bolin ranted, clutching his head.
"Yes, I guess that amount is hard to come by for some people." You muttered, fiddling with one of your mini bombs. It was like playing with a rubik's cube, only it explodes if you solve it.
A hand snatched away your bomb and you gasped. "Wait wait wait! Y/N, I got an idea! What if we sold some of your doohickies? It'll make for some great coin!" Bolin brainstormed enthusiastically, fixing in a piece before the timer started.
"Well, I'll see what I can do to help." You smiled, snatching the mini bomb away. You proceeded to throw it out the window and used your bending to make it go higher up in the air, confusing the three.
A few seconds more and an explosion went off in the sky, luckily surrounded by enough water to lessen the impact. You pat Bolin"s head as he gawked at the scene, his face turning pale.
"Do you guys have any other ideas that don't involve circus tricks and potential hazards?" The bag of wor- I mean, Mako groaned, lifting up his bag. Bolin whimpered while Korra made a thinking face.
"It's fine, I'll figure something out. I always do." He said like the emo bitch he is and left.
"It's alright, something will work out. Anyways, I gotta head back home for a bit. Goodbye Korra! Goodbye Pabu! Goodbye Bolin! And goodbye Pabu~!" And by home, you meant to the bank.
"You said goodbye to Pabu twice."
"I love Pabu."
===
The streets were lined with high class nobles and rich people alike. You didn't like going this way but it was the fastest way to your home. The sound of chatter was blocked out as you tried to think up ways to present them with money without them suspecting anything. You could just say you were a noble, it was half the truth, but that might cause some indifference, maybe...
Eventually you saw Zuko's statue and a familiar boy below.
"Hey Bolin! How's the business going?" You asked, a warm smile on your face. Bolin was in fact talking to someone, tall and seemed like the type to do bad stuff. Totally not suspicious at all.
"O-oh! Y/N, yeah uh, really great! My buddy Shin here just offered me a small job." He showed you the money and you felt a hand on your shoulder. Shin smiled at you weirdly and put out a hand to you.
"The name's Shady Shin. Now what's a lovely doll like you doing here?" Now that wasn't shady at all. You shook his hand and his other shot up and traced your knuckles, all the while you kept a neutral face on.
"Hey Shin, hands of-" Shady Shin ignored Bolin completely, cutting him off.
"Ya looking for money too? I have a few job proposals that- AHHH" Irritated with his advances, you crushed his hand in yours. He tried to jerk back but your iron grip seemed to tighten, his hands slowly turning a deep purple.
You finally let go once you were satisfied. You must have broken at least one finger but he'll be fine. Probably.
Bolin shook your shoulder lightly, slightly freaking out. Shady Shin was about to punch you before he saw the threatening aura surrounding you and thought twice.
"A-Anyways, see you tonight Bolin. For t-t-the j-job." He quivered back into his seat and the Sato mobile sped off. Immediately after, Bolin clutched both hands in his and looked at you concerned.
"Oh man that was crazy. Are you alright? Is HE alright??? Did you really just snap his fingers? ARE YOU OKAY?" Realizing the closeness, he let go of your hands like they were on fire and took a step back, clearing his throat.
"Ahem! Sooo I gotta go get ready for that uh... job." He said awkwardly, scooting to the side. "Oh Bolin, I know you can handle yourself but just in case.. here!"
You presented to him a small necklace with a small conch shell hanging on it. He looked at it weirdly before putting it on.
"What's this for?" He asked, rubbing his thumb on it. You pulled out a similar looking conch shell out of your pocket. "If you're ever in trouble, all you gotta do is press the top of the shell here and I'll come find you." You demonstrated by pressing a small hidden button on top of his conch shell and a small beeping noise emitted from yours.
"Plus I've always wanted a reason to use this!"He scratched his nape and looked away from you. "Alright, but I CAN fend for myself okay!"
>>>
It had been a few hours since you last talked to Bolin. You were doing some leftover paperwork, specifically writing a letter to apologize to Mr. Sato. Your private phone rang and Erys left the room to give you privacy.
"Hell-"
"Y/N WE NEED YOU TO COME TO THE TRIPLE THREAT TRIAD HQ. CAN'T EXPLAIN, MEET US THERE." Korra's voice screamed through the phone, making you wince. She seemed to get farther from the phone near the end of the call which meant she was in a real hurry.
"Well I guess I gotta go save my childr-" A beeping sound made it's way to your ears and you glanced at the conch shell on the desk.
"Oh shit."
Your motorcycle sped through the seats as you looked at the map Erys had prepared. You weren't very familiar in this part of the city but you had luckily put a tracker on Bolin. Eventually you heard a series of screaming and vehicles roaring that lead to an open area. You parked your motorcycle nearby and hid behind a wall, trying to access the situation with your goggles.
Mako and Korra seemed to be fighting two thugs although they seemed like they were struggling. Upon closer inspection, you noticed that they were chi-blocking them. You slipped your hand into your satchel, activating them and chucking them near the two thugs.
A bang went out and shoved the two thugs back, giving Naga the chance to shove them out of the way. You slid into the scene and put a protective barrier between them and your friends. Plus Mako I guess.
Seeing the unexpected help, the two goons glanced at each other and fled.
"Took you long enough." Mako sneered and you splashed water in his face.
"Shut your trap."
You went ahead and inspected your bombs while Mako and Korra had a conversation of some kind. Your bombs had managed to retract some broken pieces off their masks. A kind of smooth, resistant metal. This could be a clue for something bigger. Maybe you can go back to your lab and-
"Y/N did you hear what I said?" Korra asked, tapping your shoulder.
"I was asking if you had a lead?" You nodded, showing her the chipped off metal to which she tilted her head.
"This is a rare type of metal, meaning not many people can obtain this but I don't think it'll help right now." Mako and Korra's faces dropped but you wiggled your finger.
"Butttt-! I do have a lead. I put a tracker on Bolin before he went for the job just in case he was in danger. I could locate him but it won't show the exact coordinates seeing as it's triggered in a limited radius. If we can get the general idea of where he is then it would help a bunch." You explained to which they scratched their heads, making you sigh.
"We need to go somewhere he might be before I can track him down again." And Korra's face lit up while Mako's face had the same scowl from before. He jabbed a finger at you, obviously mad.
"Wait wait, you knew he was gonna take a shady job? Why didn't you stop him?!" He yelled angrily, making you face him with a neutral expression. He grabbed you by your collar and shoved you back. "You knew he could've been in danger and you didn't do ANYTHING ABOUT IT??"
"They seemed acquainted so I didn't think much. That's why I put a tracker on him you old leather chair." His face scrunched up in a sour expression before he huffed and turned his back to you.
===
You had parted ways with Korra and Mako, saying you'll do some searching of your own in other areas to which they nodded.
So far none of the places you visited had set off the tracker. You even had to have Erys do some work as well seeing as you weren't having any luck.
After what felt like hours, you finally stopped at a stall opting to get a snack. You sat down, pulling up your helmet just enough for your mouth to be exposed and sighed dramatically. The cold air nipped at your skin but that didn't distract your gloomy thoughts.
"Sir, one glass of grape juice PLEASE!" You screamed a little at the end, frustration finally taking over as you slammed your head onto the counter, startling the poor man.
You heard shuffling beside you and turned your head towards the newcomer, an exhausted look on your face. There sat a bulky man, dressed entirely in black with a few red accents while a mask adorned his face.
"You're.. Amon." You spoke, your hand slowly creeping into your satchel. He nodded, his hand grabbing your wrist tightly. "Now now.. I am here to have a nice chat with a friend. No other motives, I promise. But if you must..." He said, his voice low and discreet.
He let go of your hand and you grabbed one of your stun grenades, your thumb brushing against the trigger. Amon chuckled creepily and set his arms back onto the counter.
"That's a neat little gadget. Say, why don't you join the Equalists?" He spoke out casually, making you grit your teeth. "What?" Your tone was flat with a bit of edge to it, obviously angry at his proposal.
He waved his hands as he spoke. "Aren't you tired of being bossed around by benders? My men saw you and I've taken some interest in those contraptions of yours." You look down at your reflection in the grape juice, eyebrows knitted together.
"He doesn't know I'm a bender.. I've been keeping a lower profile than I thought." You contemplated even though you literally just made a flashy entrance to Air Temple Island a few days ago but he couldn't possibly tell who you are with your helmet on. If he didn't know then you would have an advantage. A way to get in.
You hesitantly put your stun grenade down, your guard still up. Amon chuckled at this again and rummaged his coat, handing you a white porcelain mask similar to his. There were holes where the eyes were supposed to be and two red lines went down from there to the mouth. A folded piece of paper was tucked behind it.
You brushed your hands against the surface before taking the mask from him quickly.
"I expect to see you at the rally soon..." He stood up and waited.
"Just call me Jinx."
>>>
"Korra?" The Avatar woke up with a start, staring at Mako, you before they both scrambled far from each other.
"Did you guys really just sleep in a park defenseless?" You questioned, eyes narrowed down at Mako while Korra fixed her hair a little. Mako grunted, pulling at his scarf. "We were waiting for a lead. Just got tired is all." He cleared his throat and pointed at a lanky man on top of a small podium, shouting out messages about equality and the such.
"That your lead? Well, that looks like a fun little show to interrupt!" A smile stretched across your face as you jumped onto Mako's back and he yelped, urgently latching onto your legs to keep you both balanced. He let out an annoyed sigh as Korra giggled beside you.
Shenanigans go down because the author is too lazy to describe everything.
===
After successfully scaring the guy, getting a map and comparing leads, the three of you had a solid lead.
"So the three of us will get in, grab Bolin and then out. Easy peasy." Mako spoke, cracking his knuckles. "It's not gonna be that easy dunderhead, you and Korra almost got taken by them, they have fancy gadgets and chi blockers!" You protested and he scoffed.
"We can do it if we do it quietly and discreetly."
"Oh, no one will suspect an old leather chair at a rally."
"STOP CALLING ME THAT!" He started and you crossed your arms.
"And to be exact, you and Korra will have to go by the entrance. I have another way to get in without being detected so if something goes wrong, we at least have another way out." Korra leaned forward, tilting her head.
"Then why not tell us? Wouldn't it be easier?"
You scratched your nape, looking away from them. "Well actually, it's better off if you both don't know about it right now but I'll definitely be there with you. Please, believe me when I say it's better this way." You asked in all seriousness, catching Korra's attention.
"Okay," She started, her hand patting Mako's shoulder and he rolled his eyes.
"We're putting our full trust in you."
Chapter 5: THE ACTUAL SAVING PART
Chapter Text
" Are you an ally or another storm?"
________
The moonlight above illuminated everything in your path. The soft touch of blue mixing with the cruel splash of red had quickly transformed the scenery in front of you into a series of darkness and smoke.
You had arrived to the revelation in advance, the white porcelain surfaced on your face while an obsidian cloak hid your body into a simple silhouette. The bodyguard at the entrance halted you as you walked towards the entrance, pulling you back by the hood.
"Hey! What do you think you're do-..ing?" He grew silent as a reflection of his own terrified face was shown on the smooth surface of your mask. You clear your throat, tugging at your cloak.
"What's the matter brother?" You spoke though your voice came out lower and distorted. The voice changer is working, you thought as the big bulky man violently pulled his hand back to his side and lead you in.
"Deepest apologies comrade, please, step in."
Ignoring him, you instantly followed down the narrow path, pipes running along the walls. You glanced at the paper, a note on where to meet Amon and whoever this Lieutenant guy was.
Arriving at a dimly lit room, you once again readied your hand on the baton clasped to your thigh. A dark laugh emitted from the wall behind you and you turned around, baton in hand.
"Now now Jinx, we are all friends here." Amon spoke, hand on your shoulder. You're really starting to regret choosing Jinx as a cover, it sounds kind of cliche and basic and oh my Avatar you're feeling a bit embarrassed too. Another figure emerged beside him, goggles gleaming under the light.
"This is the machinist you mentioned Amon?" He spoke, wariness visible in his tone. "Isn't one enough?"
Amon put two fingers up in a gesture of silence, the Lieutenant instantly seizing his words. He gestured for you to sit as well and you reluctantly did so. Amon sat across you while the Lieutenant stood beside you, hands at the ready in case you felt like goofing up.
"Now before we commence with our event, I'm just going to give you a little.. pep talk." He started ominously, hands clasping. "I want you to stand with me and experience the most crucial moment in history but just know that if you secretly turn your back on me,"
He tilted his head, staring you down with intensity.
"You will face the consequences."
"Yeah no, I'm dead, this was a bad idea after all. I'm gonna disintegrate any moment now."
A knock on the door alerted the three of you, the atmosphere only thickening.
"Well, it is time. Please, follow me." He ushered and you stood up, following after the Lieutenant. He glared at you that made you want to shrink and pass away on the spot but you managed to hold out.
>>>
"Where are they?" Korra grumbled, ignoring Amon's speech. "They said there was a clear sign but I haven't seen anything indicating that they're here!" She whisper-yelled while Mako had his usual grumpy face.
"They probably bailed, I knew they weren't reliable." A sharp jab made it's way to his side and he groaned.
"Don't talk about Y/N like that." She uttered, crossing her arms. He turned away from her, rubbing his hip to try and soothe the pain.
"And now a few words from our newest addition, Jinx!" Amon announced, letting way for a smaller figure behind him. They had a similar mask and with a mic in hand, they put it up towards their mouth area.
"I.. would like to express how glad I am to join this wonderful community. I had a friend who was a bender, well, they were a friend but that old leather chair bossed me around no end. He treated me like I was some expendable servant and I just.." The figure breathed out, relaxing their shoulders.
"Let's just say, I couldn't take their bullshit anymore."
Mako's eyes widened, nudging Korra. "Korra that's them, that's Y/N! Only they would call me an old leather chair, it has to be them." He muttered and Korra nodded, smiling happily.
Once the small speech was over, a few people were brought on stage, restrained and guarded. Amon continued explaining, who they were, what they've done and you watched him do so.
You stood at the sidelines behind the bender, Amon and Lightning Bolt Zolt taking a stance. The latter had started out with offense but it quickly escalated.
The lightning slowly faded, the last burst of fire shooting out of Lightning Bolt Zolt's hand as he groaned, his body almost lifeless as it hits the ground right at your feet.
He looked up at you weakly, launching at you weakly to which you dodge with ease. Once again, he fell to the ground, out of breath. His eyes were fear stricken and he shakily looked towards you.
"What.. what did he do to me?" He sputtered, voice full of disbelief. Amon looked down at him, making him quiver.
"Your firebending is gone... forever." He announced, the crowd muttering in awe. In the corner of your eye, you watch Korra and Mako discussing something and caught you glancing at them.
They subtly pointed towards the pipes and you hoped you really did understand what they were implying. You tug at your cloak and put your full attention towards the next fight, hoping they caught your drift.
You moved closer to where the last two people were kneeling and neared Bolin. He looked up at you with pleading eyes. "Hey uh hello, I think there's been a mistake- please I just want to go home, I'm not a bad guy!"
"I swear this was just one job, I don't use my bending for evil, I swear-" He continued pleading and you knelt down, undoing the knot. He was petrified at this point but you couldn't act just yet.
"Come on.." You mumbled, foot tapping onto the ground. The Lieutenant raised a brow at you questioningly and was about to speak to you but the sound of an explosion caught everyone's attention.
Steam started flooding the room and your feet moved on it's own, disappearing into the steam. Mako and Bolin ran out, sliding at the last minute to climb the ladder hurriedly. Electricity then courses through their bodies, the sensation burning up their bodies in pain as the Lieutenant smiled down at them viciously.
Their grips loosened, their bodies thumping to the ground. The concrete ground below them provided no comfort but the sudden smell of smoke and sewage woke them up, suddenly very aware of their current situation.
Both Mako and Bolin got up to their foot, getting into sloppy stances, bodies still weak from getting electrocuted.
Waves of heat emitted from Mako's hands to which the Lieutenant skillfully avoid, swinging around his batons in hopes of neutralising him which proved successful.
Seeing his brother down, Bolin hauled a few hefty rocks at the perpetrator. The Lieutenant started running at him, electrocution and chi blocking him. In a cruel swing, he took down Mako and Bolin.
The Lieutenant glanced down at them both. "You benders need to understand. There's no place in the world for you anymore." He remarked, looking away.
In one swift motion, he was thrown into the air, head hitting against the wall. Ice trapped him to the ground, his weapons out of reach.
"I think you should stop talking now, old man." You asserted, your mask still snug upon your face. He groaned in pain, falling back.
"Yeah, I wouldn't count us out just yet." Korra chided, appearing beside you. She turned to you and smiled before whistling for Naga.
Grabbing both of Bolin's shoulders, you hauled him towards Naga and threw two of your stun grenades before creating a wall of ice and following after the others.
===
"I really appreciate you being here with me." Korra mentioned, squeezing your hand tight.
The cool blue tones of the moon soothed you, no longer reminded of the incident that had occurred just before. The light breeze caused Korra to shiver but you deduced that the wind wasn't the only thing making her skin crawl right now.
You squeezed her hand reassuringly and rubbed her shoulder to which she smiled at you gratefully.
She walked ahead a few minutes after and you stood a distance away, allowing her some space to talk with Tenzin. You guess that experiments would have to wait a while.
>>>
A loud scream caught your attention, your eyes turning away from the book you were currently writing in. Your hand grasped onto the handle of your lamp, your door creaking slightly.
Slowly, you made your way towards the direction of where the scream came from. You ended up standing in front of Korra's room. Loud, heavy breaths could be heard and Naga's whimper had confirmed your suspicions.
Lightly knocking on her door, you let her know it was just you. A minute later, Korra opened the door, sweat trickling down her forehead.
"Y/N..? Sorry if I bothered you I just-" You gently wrapped your hands around her, minding the lamp. The sudden gesture caused Korra to stand there awkwardly before she melted into the hug, holding you tightly.
"Is... is it alright if you stayed here with me for the night?" She croaked out, voice weak and tired. You rubbed circles on her back and nodded, following her in.
Naga rubbed his head against your palm and you scratched behind his ears, making his tail swing. Korra sat up on one side of the bed, waiting for you to get in.
You slipped under the blanket and turned towards Korra. Your fingers gently combed through her hair, the act relaxing Korra as she cuddles into your side.
You both fall asleep after a while, comfortably basking in each other's comforting presence.
Chapter 6: GROWING TENSION
Chapter Text
Oh man this is gonna be super awkward isn't it?
________
"Kwong's? That fancy ass restaurant for nobles?" Korra questioned, trying to see if she heard you right. Her arms were crossed and she was leaning back slightly, contemplating something.
Despite her relaxed posture, you could tell that something was bothering her.
"Yeah, I have a reservation there, we can go tonight too! It would be a nice getaway for a while, plus you get to eat meat~!" You teased, making Korra snort. She made a shushing motion, looking around.
"You can't say that here, Tenzin will probably freak!" She whispered, although she didn't look all that serious. You hoped that she would let go a little tonight, you fiddled with your fingers at the thought.
"So? Will you go?" You asked cheerfully, clasping your hands together. Korra looked at you with a sorrowful look, "I'm sorry but... I'm not really in the mood to be in the city right now.. you get it, right?"
The Avatar looked away dejectedly and you feel guilt piling up in your gut. Of course she wouldn't wanna be anywhere near the city after what happened! You gave her a reassuring smile, patting her shoulder.
"Hey it's alright! I can always just dine with you guys again, the food here is great!" Korra rested a hand on your shoulder, shaking her head. "Nah, you still have that reservation. It would be a waste to not go." She said thoughtfully but you suspected that she had some kind of ulterior motive.
She insisted and you were sure that she just wanted to be by herself for a while. You kick a stray pebble away, pouting a little. "Alright.. I'll bring back some food for you and Naga though!"
And maybe Erys, poor girl needed a break from all the work you dumped on her.
===
The blinding lights of Kwang's Cuisine greeted you and you winced a little, shielding your eyes. You had left your usual accessories at home, including your goggles and bag. You always felt a little vulnerable without your goggles but it's not like anyone here knows you-
"Y/N??"
The world hates you.
You reluctantly turned around, tugging at your hair. The awkward smile on your face quickly turned into a grimace at the sight of the rotting whale carc- I mean Mako.
"Oh, fancy seeing you here. Although I shouldn't be surprised if you worked here you old leather chair." You insulted him, making him groan.
"That doesn't even make any sense!"
"Maybe you're just uneducated on advance humour."
He huffed at you, looking like he's holding back. You scoff, walking towards the entrance. He ran up beside you, pulling you back. "Wait you're going in?" He questioned and you crossed your arms.
"Yes I am, what? Do you need me to hold your hand like a kid?" He scratched his nape, looking down at his shoes. You raised a brow as he stiffly stood in front of you.
"I just.. haven't been to such a fancy place so..." He didn't continue, or rather, he was too embarrassed to. You sighed, grabbing his sleeve and pulling him with you.
"They're not gonna bite if you have a reservation. You have one right?"
"Y-yeah.. Uh, Asami just asked me to show up." You wanted to face palm so hard right now.
"And you couldn't just show up?" He glared at you when you said that but was taken away by a man clad in purple.
"You must be Master Mako, welcome to Kwong's Cuisine. And- oh! Lovely to see you here again, Master Y/N!" He gave his best smile, clapping his hands together. "Would you like the usual table?"
You waved your hand dismissively,"Ah, not today, I have a reservation at a different spot." The man nodded, his polite smile widening. "A change of scenery is great once in a while. I do hope you enjoy your meal, please excuse me." And with that he whisked Mako away.
>>>
You were expecting some kind of awkward tension during dinner tonight but you didn't expect for it to be this awkward.
You shifted in your seat, placed beside Asami while Mako silently glared at you from across the table. Your eyes were avoiding his as you practically stared holes into the table. Asami, ignoring the tension, happily chatted up Mako as you fidget with your hands.
It seems like you zoned out way too much, only snapping back to reality when the waiter served the food. You thank him and slide your order towards yourself, practically inhaling the food (it was less than graceful but the others didn't seem to mind).
"—wanna meet him?" Asami spoke, though you didn't hear what they were talking about before. Your eyes trailed over to Mako who looked excited.
"Meet one of the most successful captain of industry in all of Republic City? Yeah, I'll take you up on that." He answers excitedly.
"Hmm, maybe in a little while. Don't tell anyone but he's a bit mad at the head of Madman's—" You almost choke on your meal but saved yourself by smoothly downing some water (read: knock over your glass and snatching another one from the waiter instead).
"Why? Do they have some kind of rivalry going on?" Mako queried, intrigue filling his eyes.
"Not really, planned a meeting after months and Madman just cancelled it! Kind of a jerk if you ask me, said something about independence." You knew this was gonna come bite you in the ass later. I mean, it is kind of a jerk move but like, there were other things happening so..
"Wow, that does sound like a jerk. I mean, I get the whole independence thing but still, couldn't they have said that early on instead?" Mako clenched his fist, an unimpressed face on his features.
You visibly shrink at their degradation, catching Asami's attention. "Oh, sorry Y/N, we didn't mean to exclude you but still, you can agree that it was rude of them right?" She egged on in an attempt to include you.
"..yeah, what an asshole." You finally spew out, not finding the harm in it. Asami lights up and pats your head. You were so gonna spend the night in the lab again.
As the three of you gradually warm up to each other, you find that the slimeb- i mean, Mako, wasn't as bad as you thought. He was even decent but you suspect it's because of Asami. Asami on the other hand was really delightful, you enjoyed her rambles and felt comfortable around her. It's safe to say you made a new friend.
"Wait actually, I have to ask you something Y/N." Mako is looking right at you with a suspicious glare. You get on guard, wringing your hands together.
"Go on."
"Okay so I know for sure that you're a regular here. The staff seems to know you well and you seem so well off!" You didn't like where this was going.
"I've seen your gadgets up close and I'm sure that costs a lot of money to make, the metal you used definitely costs a fortune." Crap, when did he get so observant??
"You obviously have a lot of money, you're definitely a noble. So why didn't you sponsor us? I'm sure you'd be more than willing to for Korra and Bolin." He finished, crossing his arms. Asami silently watched the exchange, a slight tension in the air.
"... Yes I am uh, kind of rich? But the reason I didn't-" You started, nervously playing with your fingers.
"But if you did, Bolin wouldn't have resorted to working for those crooks! We wouldn't even be in danger!" He angrily cut in, annoyed at your slow response.
You go silent, eyes avoiding any contact with his as you fidget with your fingers. Mako was still staring daggers at you but you couldn't bring yourself to speak up. You didn't mean for that to happen to Bolin and you eere gonna give the money eventually but—
"I wouldn't blame them if they didn't at first." Asami spoke, her voice cutting through the tension and thankfully confused Mako enough to calm him down.
"A lot of nobles are wary of their connections, relationships. There's always a voice at the back of their head telling them that they're using them for their money." She continued and Mako relaxed, a solemn look on his face.
"You look like you've had one too many bad experiences, huh?" She turned to you, putting a hand on your shoulder.
"...it's true." You meekly force out, your brain desperately distracting you from those memories, thoughts even of when you were younger. Even now, there were people who tried to use you for your skills and money.
That was before Korra though, and ever since, you've had better days.
Mako look conflicted, staring down at your now silent figure. Despite glaring at one another and being at each other's throats, he considered you a friend. Well, maybe not a favourable friend but he knew he could rely on you.
He sighs begrudgingly, crossing his arms. "I.. I'm sorry for pushing you like that." He managed to force out an apology, even if it seemed a bit half-assed in your opinion. You accept it nonetheless and give him a grateful nod.
"...Anyways, let's finally get some dessert!" Asami enthused, making your eyes light up.
Asami might be one of your favourite people now.
