Waking Up

Summary:

It takes a lot of strength to heal. Max knows it's easier when you have support...

Notes:

Set after MTMTE #45 - 46 (the story about the Roboids, Fort Max and the Scavengers)

Work Text:

It must be difficult to Come Back.

He remembers feeling afraid, not wanting to return to his battered frame and to the reality where so many things hurt.

He remembers the fog clouding his thoughts and First Aid's words - gently coaxing him back to life. Every now and then he was waking up - only to fall back into the quiet darkness.

That darkness didn't want anything.

Didn't expect anything.

Didn't cause him pain.

And sometimes he misses that shroud of silence. He misses its calm, the easiness of just not thinking about anything and anyone (about his plating being torn apart; about his limbs getting sawed off; about - - - no, that's too much).

As he sits next to the med-berth guarding one of the Roboids - a purple and white mech still trapped in his turbo-bear alt - he remembers what it took to make him want to come back. To make him stay awake even though it hurt, even though it made him see everything again (Overlord's grin when he started whimpering; the saw grazing his chest plates; those hands twisting off his interface panel and - - - too much, again).

He shakes his head, trying to clear his thoughts. He focuses on those ones pushing him towards the light - on First Aid, on Cerebros, on Rung.

He looks at the small Beastformer, still sleeping after the un-Domestication procedure and imagines the fog around the fragile mech's processor - the fog you have to claw through on your own to face your fears and trauma.

Max knows how it feels. And the anchoring power of knowing someone Cares.

He carefully touches the purple paw; he doesn't know the mech's designation but it doesn't really matter.

"I know it's hard" he says. "You are safe here. Please come back."
