Chapter 1: All in the day's work
Chapter Text
‘Ow, you stepped on my foot George!’ Kipps hissed. The pain was bearable but coming from George, it was not a pleasant one on Kipps's part of course.
‘Who asked you to stand too close behind?’ George grunted. ‘Bloody hell Lockwood, I can hardly see a thing around here. Can we at least get one light going?’ George whispered.
‘Not yet. It’ll know we’re here. We need to find its source. It must be up here somewhere.’ their leader replied. Anthony Lockwood slowly walked ahead with George huffing in agitation. The two boys along with Quill Kipps have been scanning around the upper floor corridor for more than ten minutes looking for the source of a type two visitor they were trying to catch.
Lockwood and Co. were back again on a case doing their best yet. Ever since the incident at the Fittes House and the Rotwell institute about a year ago, calls have been flooding in ever so frequently. People were lining up to get their properties and other parts of London which still had traces of Visitors to be cleaned. Their fight against paranormal acts was hardly over. Since Fittes and Rotwell were still under investigation and to put it simply, forced to be inactive until further notice by DEPRAC Lockwood and Co. gladly accepted the new cases. Holly and George could not have been more happier since there is stuff to do and as for Quill Kipps and Flo Bones, Lockwood continued to rely on their expertise. Kipps of course gladly accepts since he has nothing else much to do anyway. Even if his talent was gone, he preferred to be where the action is and help what he can towards the team. His role was more of a consulting adviser to Lockwood and Co.
‘Got anything yet up there?’ Lucy called out to the boys. She and Holly Munro were downstairs in the hall. Lockwood touched the railings and looked down the balcony.
‘Not a sound love.’ Lockwood replied to which George and Kipps nearly cringe at his last word. Well, they are not trying to hide anything anymore really since everybody knows the relationship that has been going on between Lucy Carlyle and Anthony Lockwood. Suddenly George stopped walking.
‘Guys, the temperature’s dropping’. He said. The thermometer in his hand showed the temperature slowly going down and now reaching nine degrees and going lower. Goggles now on his eyes Kipps looked around him. Through the goggles, he could see a slight figure from afar floating with speed toward them.
‘She’s here!’ Kipps said. ‘And she’s coming to us fast.’
‘Get down!’ Lockwood warned. The three men quickly ducked as the ghost swept just above their heads and headed down to where the girls are stationed at.
‘Holly, behind you. Watch out!’ Kipps shouted. Holly turned and quickly jump to the other side when the screaming ghost nearly attack her.
Lucy move in full throttle and slice the ghost in half. By this time around Lockwood and Kipps came running from the staircase to their aid. Kipps continuously threw the salt bombs directly at the female ghost. The ghost let out an antagonizing scream that most certainly made the team cover their ears. She hovers above them as if targeting her next prey. It was damn well dying for a good kill. The team certainly wanted to live another day and tried their best not to get ghost touch.
‘George now would be a good time to locate the source and put an end to this mess’. Lockwood cried out.
‘Getting there!’ he ran along the hallway. George’s eyes scanned around the area where the ghost was first in sight according to their client.
‘Oh for heaven's sake! Lucy, tell Cubbins to look up. That’s the strongest where her energy is.’ said a very familiar old voice that has been following Lucy for not less than three months ago.
The Skull returned to their side after what has been such a long time disappearance. Lucy very much welcome him back and not that Lockwood did not mind the connection those two had but he has been keeping and eye on the Skull and at arm’s length if it thinks of talking Lucy to do anything he deems threatening. Once again the Skull aid Lockwood and Co in their desperate hour of need.
‘George, the skull said to look up.’ Lucy said.
‘Look where? There’s nothing– no, wait!’ George stopped and saw something that he was desperately searching for. ‘Of course that’s it! Lockwood, it’s the chandelier! That’s her probably her source.’
‘Blow it up then’. Kipps screamed as he threw magnesium flares toward the now rampaging ghost who was about to launch an attack on Holly and Lucy again. Lockwood ran back to the stairs while the others kept the screaming ghost occupied.
‘Lockwood, don’t!’ Lucy came running to him but was suddenly held back by the ghost which now hovers in front of her.
‘I’m taking you with me. I’m so lonely…’ it whispered to Lucy. She nearly felt her body go numb as the ghost worked its way to trap her with her power.
‘Hell no.’ Lucy revived and struck the ghost with a salt bomb from her hand.
Without warning, Lockwood jumped from the railings and caught onto the chandelier. He noticed something dangling from one of the white stones. There was her source, a gold diamond ring. How on earth the ring got there did was puzzling for him indeed but that is another story to cover for another time. Lockwood better cover the ring in a silver net quick. The ghost noticed this and let out another piercing scream. She went straight to Lockwood who then threw the diamond ring to George. The boy caught it with the silver net in his hand and thus ended the fight with the female ghost disappearing out of sight. Lockwood felt his hand almost slipping from the chandelier. Lucy grasped an iron chain and then swung to catch him. The pair landed tumbling on the carpet floor with Lockwood falling on top of her.
‘Don’t ever do that! You know how it makes me feel seeing you doing reckless stuff again.’ Lucy then hugged him in which he respond the same only tighter. They stood upright and suddenly he received a light smack on the chest from Lucy. She was really upset.
‘Sorry Luce, someone has to get the thing. It’s okay…. everything is over now.’ He breathed from exhaustion.
Lockwood rested his forehead on top of her own. The glimmer of light coming from under Lucy’s t-shirt caught his attention. It was the very golden sapphire necklace that belonged to his late mother which now wraps neatly around the neck of a new owner.
‘Well, it’s nice seeing you two getting all lovey-dovey but we really need to call it a night.’ George cleared his throat. Kipps was already seen locking the iron metal box where Holly had placed the source of the screaming ghost.
‘Coo, that was a boring fight. I thought she would be more menacing considering that she killed almost three generations of the men in this house. Then again, you can’t judge appearances. Some ghosts may look scary but in truth they are ridiculously boring.’ The Skull commented. Lucy let out a chuckle.
‘I’m surprised it took you a while to locate her source. Didn’t take you for a slow poke. You seemed to be losing your touch.’ Lucy clapped back. She certainly know how to get him ticking.
‘I am most certainly not. With her screaming like a banshee you think it’s easy to spot the signs? I have ears too you know. Not that you can see it. I’d like to see you try blocking her screaming voice out of your head.’ He spat. Lucy could only shake her head at his remarks but there was a slight smile nonetheless. She thanked him for his help. To the very least upon returning, the Skull becomes a bit more cooperative.
The team retreated to their circle and kept all their belongings and kits back into the bags. They took separate cabs where Lockwood, Kipps, and George volunteered to go to DEPRAC to bring the source to go to the furnace. The ladies on the other hand went home. Lucy head back to 35 Portland Row while Holly went back to her own place. What a night it was indeed for these famous five. Another case solved and another happy customer as George would say. Lockwood and Co. is indeed making a name for themselves in the psychic investigation world and nothing will ever stop them to become London’s best psychic agency. For a while, life was good….
Chapter 2: An Offer From a Viscount
Summary:
‘So, Bridgerton… Is that our next case?’ She asked.
Lucy did not want to say anything at first but she noticed the couple seem to be eyeing on her for quite a while now. Not that she mind but based on the expression the Viscount gave her produced an uneasy feeling in Lucy's gut as if he was looking at a long lost lover. Lucy shook her head at the thought. Maybe she was only imagining things.

Chapter Text
The sunlight behind the half closed curtain of the window shone through her face. Slowly, Lucy opened her eyes. Or more to say the mid-day light. After last night’s event, she felt super tired even after a long rest. Her body have not fully recovered from the soreness but still, Lucy was eager to start the day. Other than that, she remembered that Holly informed the whole team that a new client will be coming at two o’clock. The Skull does not seem to be moving so she guessed that it was still inactive. Well, it is daylight anyway; not that she worried he would disappear again. Lucy yawned and then slowly sat upright. She took her towel and then made it for the shower. After changing herself, Lucy headed for the kitchen. She could already hear George’s voice from behind the door. It sounded as if he was trying to prove a point like in a debate competition.
‘We should accept it. I mean, how often we’ve had offers from a Viscount? None.’ he said.
‘Though we don’t see eye to eye much but I’m with George on this. It’s a good offer though.’ Kipps agreed. He took a bite of the doughnuts that Holly bought over from Arif’s shop.
‘We’ll see what the client has to say first. I know what you’re thinking George. You’ve been wanting to explore the Bridgerton Estate ever since Flo told you of its stories’. Holly turned her head to the now opened kitchen door. ‘Oh, good day Lucy’.
‘Hey Holly’. Lucy greeted as she took a seat at the table. ‘So, Bridgerton…. Is that our next case?’ She asked. Holly nodded in reply. Lucy helped herself to some waffles. Not long after, Lockwood came in and joined them all in the kitchen. He took a seat at the head of the table.
‘From what i know, the Viscount's brother recently moved into a new home.’ George informed.
‘What seems to be the problem?’ Lucy asked curiously.
‘Obviously, they are not the only ones occupying the place’. Kipps said.
George informed that the mansion was built a hundred and fifty years ago and it was owned by the Burnswick family. The design of the mansion was made by Baron Cedric Burnswick himself. He and his wife stayed at the estate for two years before her untimely death. George flipped through his notebook.
‘How did it happened?’ Lockwood asked. He was in serious thought.
‘Childbirth. The Baron was driven to madness by her death and it worsen because their baby died a few months later. His manservant found his body at the foot of the staircase'. George corrected his glasses. 'He probably jumped off and killed himself. All his fortune are passed on to a distant relative named Professor Hugo Bridgerton. Now he's an interesting fellow'. George turned to the next page of his notebook. ‘Apparently, he was an archeologist. A lot of the artifacts he excavated are still on display at the museum. Now, what else do we know also happened five decades ago?' George made them think.
'The problem' Lucy gave the correct answer.
'Precisely. He was a rather private person really. Not married nor does he have any children.’ George explained.
'What about his death?' Holly asked.
'A heart attack. Interestingly, the maid found his body also at the foot of the stairs.' George said. There was a long pause.
'From the sound of it one of them might be our culprit'. Lockwood concluded. George nodded.
'Could very well be but we'll know more if we go to the mansion itself. That will only happen if you agree to accept this case Lockwood'. George said with a good amount of hope.
‘Hold on a minute'. Kipps voiced out. 'You said the mansion was undergoing rennovation isn’t it? Why didn’t the ghosts attack any of the workers?’ Kipps said in puzzlement. ‘Surely with all the construction noise going on all around, there had bound to be ghost sightings.’
'I thought about that too'. Holly wondered.
‘The construction was done only in daylight. The Viscount’s brother made sure that the site was well guarded and equipped with iron and salt. They had sensitives woeking around the area too.’ George explained.
‘Oh, so that explain then.’ Lucy said. George shook his head.
‘I don’t think that’s the case. Other than posh parties or social gatherings, who knows what happened on the Estate before'. George said there might be more to the story. His eyes filled with the thrill of hunger to learn new information. 'It's certainly worth exploring'.
‘The Viscount's representative is coming in an hour's time. So let’s be on our best behavior.’ Holly instructed.
‘I’d say we give them a warm Lockwood and Co hospitality then.’ Lockwood smiled. He gave a wink to Lucy which she just shook her head at his antics. Even so, Lucy returned his smile with her own.
*****
A while later, the team gathered in the living room. Holly came from the front door bearing unexpected news. She called on Lockwood. Lucy turned her attention to the window where she could see a luxury black car spotted parking in front of 35 Portland Row. Lockwood and Holly both rushed to the door leaving Quill, Lucy, and George wondering. Soon, they returned along with two unlikely guests. The man, clad in a dark blue suit had an air about him that speaks a class of his own. The beautiful lady beside him, Lucy suspected of Indian descent, smiled at her.
'Everyone, this is Viscount Anthony and Vicountess Kate Bridgerton. Please, do sit.' Lockwood gestured. Both couples greeted the whole team and then settle down on the couch.
Holly was already seen pouring tea for the guests.
'I must say my lord when our assistant said that you'll be sending a representative we didn't know that you be here in person. It’s an honor to meet you.' Lockwood said. Anthony smiled and gave a nod.
‘My wife, Kate here thought that it would be best for we to tell the problem ourselves. So, Lockwood and Co… Your reputation in the ghost-hunting world precedes after the Fittes and Rotwell incident.' Said Anthony. Lucy already sees Lockwood letting out a grin. The one he uses to bring in clients.
‘Ah that. Just helping out with what we can.’ Lockwood tried to divert from the question. In a way, the public does not know the whole truth and they were all forced to keep the knowledge to themselves by DEPRAC. Anthony then turn his attention to Lucy.
'I take that you are Ms. Carlyle'. He spoke.
'Yes sir.' Lucy responded. 'Pleasure to meet you.’
'Oh, do call me Anthony'. He grinned. Lockwood did a double take. Somehow, even to him what the Viscount said sounded less formal. Kate could only manage a smile.
‘Uh, It's okay sir'. Lucy forced a smile. Somehow, his expression seemed to be gentle rather than earlier.
'Forgive me but what is your age?' Anthony asked her. That caught Lucy off guard.
'I'll be 17 this year.' She replied politely. Anthony nodded in amazement. Lockwood looked at the two and then cleared his throat.
'I see... Have you always been a listener?' Anthony asked. Clearly he was interested.
‘She's the best in the country Viscount. I'm very pround to have her as my associate.' Lockwood interrupted before Lucy could answer. Kipps and holly exchange small smirks as they very well know how Lockwood view Lucy more than just an associate. 'So, what can we help you with?’
'Oh, yes. We've come to ask for your team's assistance. One of our family properties are infested with visitors. My brother and his family are the newest victim.' Anthony paused.
'The rennovations are going well and nearing to a finish that is until....' Kate paused and looked at her husband.
‘My niece & nephew found a hidden room’. Said Anthony with a serious look. 'My great, great uncle Hugo kept quite a lot of items in there'.
‘What sort of things?’ George asked further. ‘Not sources I suppose?’
‘Unfortunately, some of them are'. Said Kate.
'How many sources are we talking?' Lockwood asked.
'We don't have the exact numbers'. The sensitives we hired dare not to go in. We contacted DEPRAC about it.’ Anthony replied. 'Hence, Inspector Barnes gave us your contact number'.
‘When did the supernatural activity started?’ Lockwood interrogated further.
‘About three weeks ago. We noticed ever since the discovery of the hidden room, strange things have been occurring within the household.’ Said Anthony.
‘The people in the household experienced weird day dreams but are not really dreams at all. Then there's the furniture being moved and then lights flickering. We thought it was some sort of a type one or some pesky type two. That is until Jane, my niece, told her mother that she saw it. The visitor manifested itself to her.’ Anthony explained.
The rest of the team felt the scare from Kate's words. Kipps was pursing his lips and deep in thought. George continues writing down their explanation.
‘Jane started to act differently. She would lock herself in her room and always seem to be spacing out. One day she was caught sleepwalking and nearly jumped off the balcony. Luckily, her mother and nanny managed to catch her in time.’ Anthony said.
‘We've sent her to live with my sister Daphne until we get rid of the visitor but…' Anthony paused.
Droplet of sweats started forming on the Viscount's forehead. Kate took out her lace handkerchief and handed it to him. He thanked her and wiped of the sweat on his brow
‘It's okay… you can tell us.’ Lucy said.
‘It ghost-touched her nanny'. Anthony elaborated. The atmosphere changes by the very mention of the information of death that even George stopped writing for a second to look straight in front. None of the team said anything. They continue to listen to the story.
"My brother's son Thomas suffered ghost lock. The poor boy was with her when the dreadful incident happen.' He continued.
They learned that nanny was trying to protect the Thomas but the visitor has got to her first. There was a sad look in Anthony’s eyes. His face portrayed the look of every parent's nightmare. No one wished anything bad to happen to the people they love. Kate held her husband's hand.
'I'm so sorry to hear that...'. Lucy sympathized. Anthony could only smile.
For Lucy, having to experience loved ones gone from ghost-locked, the memories during her last mission with Norrie and the team at Jacobs made it depressing for her to remember. Nonetheless, it became the very reason why she wanted to put a stop to the hauntings before more people lost their lives to the problem.
'We need you to get rid of the ghost before it takes another victim.’ Said Kate said seriously.
‘Could you tell us more about the nanny that died?' Lockwood asked.
‘Diana was a good person. She has always been very caring towards my brother’s children. She lives up north before coming to work for the family.’ Said Anthony.
‘Forgive me but I still couldn’t help wondering. Why would the ghost attack Diana?’ Lucy asked in wonder.
‘The question is Lucy, did she do something she wasn't supposed to?’ George said.
Diana was not the type of person who have any dark secrets. The Viscoubtess said she was like an open book and one of her good traits was that she loved helping others. Diana was lending a hand to two of the servants who were in charge to clean the hidden room. Lockwood listened tentatively.
George corrected the brim of his glasses. 'Maybe Diana must have took something that she should'nt have. Did any of the servants suffer any attacks?’ he asked.
‘No one has ever dare to venture into the mansion after that awful incident.’ Kate answered.
‘It could mean that there might be another source that DEPRAC is not aware still kept inside the house.’ Lockwood concluded.
‘My sentiments exactly.’ Anthony nodded in agreement. ‘My brother and his wife is staying with us at Aubrey Hall for the time being. I've spoken to Inspector Barnes and he recommend that you guys are suitable for the job.’ Anthony said. Lockwood grinned.
‘Rest assured Viscount Bridgerton. We’ll snuff out the visitor in no time. The mansion well be in good hands.’ Said Lockwood. '
‘I sure hope so Mr. Lockwood. I've heard your team has a reputation of burning houses down in flames.... or so I read’. Anthony joked.
He earned a light nudge on the ribs from his wife who then stared at him. He quickly closed his mouth. That earn a silent chuckle from Kipps, Lucy and Holly. Lockwood could only smile to the joke. After going through the series papers and contracts with the Viscount, Lockwood seals the deal much to george's delight. Both Lockwood and Lucy accompanied theie guest to the door.
Anthony turned to Lucy and asked where she was from. Lucy hails from the northern parts of England and has been working with Lockwood and Co for more than five years now. He merely said that Lucy looked like someone she knows. Lucy can only smile at the comment. After that, she and Lucy shook hands. Anthony and Kate bid the two agents goodbye and then drove away from Portland Row.
‘You seem certain that they can help us’. Said Kate.
“What Colin and Penelope said about the visitor my dear and judging by that girl’s talent, I believe Lockwood and Co are exactly what we need’. Anthony answered.
'Is... that all?' Kate questioned. Anthony gave her a look and then let out a slight smile. Kate entertwined her hands with his left hand. She knew her husband all too well.
'Darling, I know what you're thinking. I too wished for it to be true but bear in mind Anthony, that girl... is not who you are looking for'. Anthony did not say anything. His eyes turn to the rearview mirror looking at the reflection of the girl with the blue sweater until she disappeared into the door of 35 Portland Row.
Chapter 3: The Portrait of a Man
Summary:
'I need their help to dig up on someone'. Anthony answered. Simon sat straight on the sofa.
'Oh, who dares to piss you off this time?' Simon joked.
'Very funny...Her name is Lucy Carlyle. Find whatever you can of her and simon...' Anthony whispered. 'No one must know about this'.

Chapter Text
She's coming!' Said Mary. 'Lucy, hide!'
Lucy's body shivers from the thought of getting beaten up by mum again. She quickly hid herself into one of her sister's closet. The sound of mum's footsteps rushing in was enough to make her scared. All she did was eating a piece of chocolate cake which of course belonged to her mother.
'Wait till i get my hands on you, you little brat. Where are you? come out now!' Said Mrs. Carlyle demanded. A girl clad in a flowery red dress came in. '
'Lucy's not in here mum. With you carrying that old thing she probably ran off to the river.' Cindy voiced. She is the eldest of the Carlyle daughter. Cindy enters the bedroom and then slumps on the bed. Mrs. Carlyle huffed and puffed. She was scanning the room wondering where could that wretched little girl be hiding. Her husband's belt at the ready in her hands. Mrs. Carlyle then stormed out of the room. Another girl enteres.
'Did she do something again?' Caroline took a seat in fron of the dresser. 'I've always thought she was peculiar. I don't understand why mum and dad still kept her around?' She paused and the ran her fingers to do her hair as she looked into the mirror. 'I mean, she's not even our sister'.
'She has the talent. Why else do you think mum adopted her? At least she can make money for the family'.
'Talent my arse. The only talent Lucy posess is getting herself into trouble'. Caroline gave a laugh.
Lucy's heart sank upon knowing the truth. She knew of course that she and the Carlyles are not blood related. It happened when she was five years of age. Her mother told her that she was found unconcious in an empty property where her father was the caretaker. They suspected her falling from the stairs. The only memory she had was waking up in a remote town hospital. The doctor diagnosed her with amnesia and it may take a while to jog her memory back. Not that her parents cared anyway. Mrs. Carlyle took her in after realizing the talents Lucy possessed.
'What fortune you will bring to me'. She utters wickedly
Mr. Carlyle died earlier after in which Lucy does not give a damn. Her memories from before was all a blur. Life with the Carlyles was the only life she knew ever since. Lucy was fortunate to meet with Norrie White and the became fast friends. That is until the incident with the company Jacobs happpened which resulted to her being accused and sent the family to humiliation. She has had enough beatings from her mother and side eyes from her siblings and the village. Hence, she ran away.
Sometimes, in her sleep Lucy dreamt of a warm smile and caring hands that held her close. The smell of lilacs and a beutiful blue coloured parasol that belonged to a woman shielded her from the bright afternoon sun. She could not see her face due to the sunlight. The mysterious man bent down and whispered sweet words near her ear and then patted on Lucy's head. Lucy dreamt of herself running and playing in what appears to be a garden. Laughter could be heard. The man caught her in his arms and then circled her around.
'Gotcha, my little princess' He said. The woman joined them. She laughed and for once Lucy was happy.
****
The road to the estate was boring. At least George manage to fill in their ride with his research. Lucy gazed outside of the train window. Her mind lingers upon the thought of the estate they are about to go. Somehow, deep in her heart she is curious about the Bridgerton Family. Anthony's face kept playing in her mind. It was as if meeting an old friend who returned after being away for a very long time.
Lucy never really talked much about her own family to the other members of the team but with Lockwood it was an exception. Since they are in a relationship, Lockwood wanted to learn everything about her. Lucy’s parents are not the loving kind which very much put the sourness on their relationship. Her five other sisters were not much of a help either. The only one she consider her ally was Mary. Well, being close to age, they were each other’s comfort. Lucy still occasionally write to her. She got to know that Mary moved out of their village and settled in Netherfield to work as a maid for a wealthy family. Nonetheless, Lucy was happy for Mary and wishes her the best.
‘The Viscount said the hidden room was found on the second floor. That’s in the eastern wing.’ George showed them the house master plan.
‘Blimey, that’s an awfully big mansion. I mean, take a look at the rooms we have to search.’ Lucy shook her head. ‘It might take us more than two days to search for the source.’
‘Don’t worry Luce. Vicountess Kate have arranged for us to stay at the Bridgerton's family Bed and Breakfast. Francesca Inn and spa, yeah that’s the name’. Said Lockwood.
'Francesca?' Lucy thought. Lockwood did not heard her.
‘Right, once we’re there you guys are to take the temperature recordings of each rooms. George and I will take the first temperature recordings at the east wing.’ Said Lockwood. The others nodded in reply.
‘God, there’s got to be at least 20 rooms here Lockwood’. Kipps let out a huff.
‘Hmm...Jolly.’ Holly simply said.
‘I reckon there’s gonna be any sightings up here though.’ Lucy pointed out at the attic. ‘Still, it might be worth to check on the staff’s quarters. Hopefully there' something there.’ Lucy pointed.
‘Okay. You, Holly and Kipps can check that part of the house. If you see or hear anything, do not engage first. Report back what you see and be alert at all times’. Lockwood instructed.
***
They arrived at the mansion around two o’ clock. Anthony greeted the crew. There was another fellow that Lockwood and Co was introduced to. The man had a fair and handsome features that made the day seem brighter yet his eyes portray a hidden sadness about him.
‘Mr. Lockwood, This is my brother Colin. He's the owner this place’. Said Anthony. Colin shook hands with Lockwood and the rest.
‘Mr. Bridgerton’. Lockwood greeted.
‘Pleasure to meet you’. Colin nodded in greeting. ‘I trust you have all you need for the job tonight?’
‘Yes, we bought the necessary stuff.’ Lockwood gestured to the bags behind them. ‘I’m very sorry to hear about what happened to your son. We will do what we can to contain the visitor sir’.
‘I hope so Mr. Lockwood. My wife and I are truly grateful to you and your team’. Colin said.
‘Shall we come inside?’ Anthony chimed in.
“Yes, we should.’ Lockwood nodded.
Lucy bent down on the ground and then open her bag pack. She slowly turned the lever of the Skull’s Jar. She informed him of the event so far. The Skull being annoying as always commented that the place reeks of unusual energy that he never encountered before. Something was different indeed. It wasn’t until Lucy stepped into the mansion the Skull gave a cry that startled Lucy.
‘What the hell Skull?!’ Lucy whispered rather angrily.
‘Oh boy.... I’m starting to feel queezy now. This one is powerful Lucy. You better not slack off’. It warned.
‘Where’s the strongest you felt?’ Lucy asked again. Holly who was next noticed Lucy was mumbling to herself. She did not need to know why as Holly knew perfectly well to whom Lucy was talking.
‘What did the skull say?’ Holly tried asking quietly. Lucy leaned in close to her.
‘The skull has picked up an energy. He's trying to locate it’. Lucy whispered. Holly's brow furrowed. Well, just their luck. Anyhow, there is nothing to worry about right? Holly thought to herself. The others walked further in front.
Suddenly, Lucy heard faint noise coming from her left. Next to her she saw the long hallway. What was that? She thought. Lucy took off her back pack and placed it down much to the Skull’s dismay. All of a sudden Lucy felt as if her body was moving on her own accord. She followed the sound. The further Lucy walked, the sound started to become clearer and clearer to her ears. It was so beautiful but why does it felt so different?
‘What is this music?’ Lucy muttered to herself. The song ended once she reached in front of a door at end of the hallway. She stood in front of it. Lucy gulped and her mind is reeling with the suspense of what lies behind the closed door. What will she find? She did not realize her surroundings went cold. All she want to do now is to open that door. Lucy reached out her hand and grab the handle. A jolt hit her square on the chest. She felt something or more to say, someone was breathing behind her neck.
‘You came back..... ’ The croaky voice in the wind let out its whisper. A sudden laughter could be heard.
Lucy’s eyes widen. Oh no, she thought. Her forehead sweating. Her body froze and hand practically glued to the doorknob. She tried calling the others but her voice just seem to shut on its own. Then all of a sudden, an arm reached out to touch he hands. The coldness pierced her skin and the felt like as if someone has set he skin on fire. Lucy screamed and struggle to let go.
‘Lucy! Lucyyyy!’ The sound of Lockwood’s voice shock her. His hands was seen gripping both her arms while shaking her body in order for her to wake up. Lucy gasped and opened her eyes. Lockwood looked so worried and alarmed. Her mind was a mess and she felt her head hurt. Holly bend down and dabbed her neat handkerchief on Lucy’s forehead to clear of the sweat on the girl’s brow. Lucy’s eyes looked around her. The Viscount’s and his brother all stared at her.
‘Wha- What happen? Lockwood…’ She said rather like a whisper. Lockwood caressed her head.
‘Lucy, your hand.’ Holly gasped. There was a small bruise and it was in that instant, the pain of ghost touch hit her very nerve.
Colin suggest to take her to the local hospital but Lucy did not want to as it might be risky for listeners like her. Lockwood and Anthony decided that it was best for them to step outside.
Lucy learned that she was going in a different direction than the others were. Thank goodness George turned around and he was the one who discovered that Lucy left the Skull on the floor and saw her walking to the other wing. He called her out but Lucy was far gone. Lockwood and Kipps ran to get her. Lucy apologize and said that she did not heard them at all. Lucy informed them of the music she heard.
‘What kind of music was it?’ Asked Anthony.
‘I'm not sure. Its like some kind of tune that comes out of a music box’ Lucy answered. 'Which room did i went to?' Anthony looked at Lockwood and then back to her.
'Luce... there was no room. You were in a daze and almost gotten yourself ghost locked.' Lockwood said. He did not intend to sound overprotective but Lucy in danger put him on edge.
This surprised her. What Lucy experienced back at the mansion was no coincidence. Colin suspected she was daydreaming. Some of his servants experienced the same thing. For it to gain a powerful hold on Lucy, Lockwood informed the team need to be extra cautious at all times.
'We should go. Your friend here, I reckon she could use a rest.' Colin siggested to Lockwood.
***
Everyone took his word into account. They can live to fight another day. What happen before proved to them that the visitor was a strong type two. Anthony and Colin drove the team to the inn that they have prepared for their stay. Surprisingly, it only took them fifteen minutes to get there. Lucy stepped out of the car. She found herself staring at the view of the inn. Her heart suddenly took her breath away. Oddly enough, this inn looks all to familiar to her. Where have she seen ot before?
'This place...' Lucy uttered. Colin heard her.
'Oh, It belongs to our family.' Colin answered her curiosity. 'Come in Ms. Carlyle'. There was a housekeeper waiting in front of the doorway. She greeted the Bridgerton men.
'Welcome everyone' Said Mrs Wilson. 'Oh Anthony, put those bags down. Let the servants bring them in.'
The old lady fussed. Anthony could only smile but did as he was told. The rest of them walked into the inn. She greeted the crew but stopped when she turned to face Lucy. There was a moment of silence. Lucy blinked at the old housekeeper.
'Is there something wrong?' Lucy simoly asked.
'Oh... oh my. No dearie. For a moment there i thought you were.... never mind.' Mrs. Wilson waved her hands. She turned her heels and invited them to come inside.
The bright and sophisticated design of the place captured the ambiance of the inn. Holly said it was as if she stepped into a fairytale castle. Even Skull seemed to be enjoying himself. The Viscount made sure Lockwood and Co had a good stay. According to Mrs. Wilson, the inn was named in honor of the one member of the Bridgerton siblings.
'Your rooms are upstairs to the left. I have booked two rooms for all of you. Dinner will be at 5:30'. Said Mrs. Wilson.
'Thank you Mrs. Wilson. We'll take it from here.' Colin said.
Lucy looked around the hall. The place somehow gave her a feeling she cannot describe. She felt like she wanted to cry. She walked toward the drawing room. Anthony noticed and then followed her from behind. Holly was doing the same.
'Is the place to your liking Ms. Carlyle? Anthony asked.
It's.. it is breathaking my lord'. Lucy replied. Holly walked toward the fireplace. There was a portrait of a man.
'Who is this?' Holly pointed out. Lucy and Anthony turned facing her. Lucy froze at the very look of the portrait that hung top of the wall of the fireplace. That face! she thought. The eyes staring at her were the same ones she dreamt.
'Ah, that is my father. The former 8th Viscount Bridgerton'. Anthony said. George came in and joined them. He looked at the picture and all of a sudden his eyes squinted.
'Hey... i know this guy'. He tried recalling from memory. Lockwood stood behind him.
'Isn't this man from your drawing Lucy?' Lockwood questioned. George snapped his fingers.
'Oh yes! that one. Now i remember. The picture you drew on the thinking cloth.' George said. 'That's him'. Lucy went silent whereas Anthony and Colin looked at her. Anthony's eyes nearly went wide wide at the thought of Lucy and his late father.
'Have you met my father before?' He asked her. Lucy did not know what to say. The man in her dream was the Viscount's father?
'Um, no. I don't. It was just a silly dream i had and i wanted to capture a face....' She paused as her gaze the look upon Anthony who was for sure surprised.
'Is he well?' Lucy asked. Anthony's expression went somber.
'Our dear father died years ago.' Colin interrupted.
Lucy felt her heart clenched. It was as if someone stabbed a knife through it. She was lost for words and she could feel the sting in her eye.
'Lucy, are you okay?' George gestured to her. She simply nodded and smile. Lucy turned her face away. Why was she feeling sad all of a sudden! Who was this man to her? It was as if the love she felt coming from him got taken away.
Anthony excused himself and walked out of the drawing room. He immediately made a phone call. His heart could not bear it any longer. The past couple of months had been a torment for him. He did not want to acknowledge it at first but a certain picture of Lockwood and Co in the newspaper he once encounter during breakfast produced a thought of ever finding his long lost sister.
His father have searched for years but were futile. It drained him of his health. They stopped after seeing no hope of finding her at all. Anthony never mentioned his effort on finding her to his family especially to his dear mother. He rather kept ir silent. The pain of losing her little girl was something his mother did not wish to be reminded ever again. Hence, their father named the inn to honor the memory of their lost child. He also hoped if his little girl is alive, she would come here, back to their family.
'Hello. Simon, its me.' Said Anthony.
'Hey bro. What's up?' Somon asked.
'Are you still in contact with that private investigation agency you used to hire for your dealings?' He asked.
'Yeah... why?' Simon frowned. Clearly his brother in law was up to something again.
'I need to dig up some info on someone'. Anthony answered. Simon sat straight on the sofa.
'Oh, who dares to piss you off this time?' Simon joked.
'Very funny...Her name is Lucy Carlyle. Find whatever you can of her and simon...' Anthony whispered. 'No one must know about this'.
Chapter 4: She's not Dead
Summary:
'She is not dead Colin!' Anthony let out a firm tone. 'Francesca is still alive'.
'You should've died when i hit you hard on your head and pushed you down below'. She cried out. Lucy was so confused. The visitor studied Lucy's face.

Chapter Text
Lucy's thermometer showed slight cold but steady temperature. Kipps and Holly scanned the other rooms on the servants quarters one level below her. Sometime last month, Holly broke out to the whole team that her talent was beginning to fade. She was still able to put a good use on whatever the essence of her talent that's left remaining. Holly train together with Kipps for the past few months and got more comfortable accepting the way she is now. Like Kipps, she too acquired the assistance of the goggles.
'Temperature is 40 degrees over here'. Said the other girl who was teamed up with her. Lucy turned facing Edwina. She is Kate's sister who happens to be a consulting agent at Tendy's. At first Lockwood and Co disagree to be supervised as they prefer to work without supervision but as per Kate's request, they had to include Edwina and Anthony's little brother Gregory on the search. Gregory trained as an agent at Fittes but after the Fittes and Rotwell disaster, Anthony had him transfered to Tendy's instead. Gregory went with Lockwood and George to the east wing.
'Okay....' Lucy replied. Not that she mind Edwina's company but Lucy have always been self conscious around girls. Edwina was the same age as her. She carry such a lovable and sparkly personality that Lucy and George noticed Holly and her got on like a house on fire.
'Where else do we need to check?' Edwina asked.
'We're down to two more rooms'. Lucy replied.
'Okay. Let's take one room each'. Edwina suggested. Lucy nodded. Edwina walked ahead of her and enter the second last room. Lucy took the last one. A tingling sound coming from her bag pack.
'Hmm.... Everything here seems quiet. Too quiet. ' Said the Skull. Lucy enters the other room. She placed the skull in the jar on the small dusty table.
'Agreed... So, did you pick up anything?' Lucy asked.
'Nothing extraordinary so far except that this house's energy is maliciously messed up. I think you ought to go to the pool instead. That area is worth checking. The rest in this wing are ancient history waiting to decay. ' The Skull suggested.
'Do you think the source is there?' she hoped.
'Like i said, the pool is worth checking'. He said. Lucy wasted no time and put on her bag pack once more. After recording the temperature of the room, she made her way out of the servants quarters.
'Lucy, where are you going?' Edwina asked while coming out of the other room. Lucy almost forgotten about her.
'Uh, I'm heading to the pool area. I want to check that place out'. She said. 'You can continue here'.
'Alright. Take someone with you. Remember, we go in pairs'. Said Edwina in an almost worried tone.
'That's why i'm looking for Holly'. Lucy lied. She let out a reassuring smile just to prove to Edwina that she is capable to take things solo. Edwina did not blink.
'On second thought, I should come with you'. She offered herself. Lucy cursed under her breath.
Right at the moment she needed to connect with the Skull, Edwina had to crash in. Well, she cannot blame the girl as no one except only a handful of people knew she could talk to ghost.
Lucy and Edwina arrived at the pool area. Edwina commented that Colin had requested the design of the pool area to be modern but the construction remain unfinished. Looking at the state of it, the skull commented that the owner had no eye on landscaping at all.
'I wanna cry just looking at this piece of work. Mr. Bridgerton could've gone for Greek inspired baths. This design looks like a big bathtub made for ducks to bath while socializing with pigeons'.
'Hey, not everyone have taste like yours.' Lucy said.
'That's what make me spectacular'. The Skull let out a cheeky grin.
'I was being sarcastic'. Said Lucy through gritted teeth.
'Oh sweetie, so was I'. The skull teased.
Lucy let a low growl and rolled her eyes. She continue looking around. She could see Edwina searching at the sets of chairs placed in one area. Lucy took the opportunity to tap into her surroundings. By using her sense of touch, she can hear voices of of the past. She placed the skull in then bag down and knelt at the edge of the pool.
At first there were faint noises but slowly she could hear them. There it was again! The same music she heard when she first came into the mansion. Laughter and giggles rang in her ear. It led her to the voice of a little girl singing while dancing around the pool. She was having a good time. A small splash from the water startled her. Lucy opened her eyes. She looked to her front and stared onto the surface of the water. Something... was moving inside.
***
'Took you long enough. Found anything yet?'. Kipps asked. Holly gave each of them a bar of chocolates and with the help of Gregory, they pass around to the others nice cups of warm tea.
'Oh we found something alright.' George said. His eyes was gleaming whenever he came across a new discovery. 'Turns out there are two death glows underneath the carpet of the master bedroom. Lockwood noticed it due to the brightness. Well, by his standard of brightness of course'.
'Now we're on to something.' Lockwood said looking pleased.
'Gregory, when your ancestor acquired this mansion, did the Brunswick family left any records about the mansion's history? anything in particular? Lockwood asked.
'My late father kept some in the library at Aubrey Hall. You're welcome to have a look'. The young boy said. 'I can ask my brother to let you borrow them for the case'.
'Excellent!' George grinned. Lockwood thanked him.
Lockwood looked around. He noticed that two people are not with them. He asked Holly where Lucy and Edwina went. Before she could answer, a dreadful scream made them all come to a halt.
Upon hearing a loud splash behind her, Edwina turned only to find Lucy missing. She kept calling for her. Her eyes darted to the pool in front of her. The water was no longer still. Edwina gasped and feared for the worst.
'Oh God, Lucy!' Edwina yelled. 'SOMEBODY HELP!'
***
Lucy's vision led her to see the face of her father, Mr. Carlyle. Her eyes went wide upon what he was about to do. He struck her head with a hard object. Lucy yelped in pain and then she fell into the water. He entered the pool and grabbed her by both arms. In her shock, Lucy clawed her hands on his own in order to break free. She tried fighting his strength but he was strong.
'Dad NO!' Lucy cried. She let out a shriek when he roughly pulled her hair and then sunk her into the water. He did it over and over for a few more times.
Lucy gasped for air.
'Naughty girl. What did you see just now?' His voice sent chill into her spine.
Lucy felt herself drowning. Suddenly, there was a strong pull. Lucy coughed the water out of her mouth. She looked to her left and right. This time it was a different surrounding. Standing in front of her was a woman clad in a maid uniform full of blood. Her sharp blue eyes and greyish pale skin indicate that lucy knew, this she was not of the living. There was something about her that made Lucy felt very scared and afraid. The face of the woman reminded her of her very inner child's nightmare. Around the visitor's neck, lucy noticed something shining. It was a silver necklace with a beautiful emerald ruby on display.
'You.... ' The visitor voiced in a whispery tone. Her eyes filled with hatred. Lucy felt the coldness of her surrounding.
'Who are you?' Lucy asked. She tried to place a connect with the visitor in front of her. 'I'm here to help. You cannot stay here'.
'Help me? ' She let out a short laugh'. She replied. ' You should've died when i hit you hard on your head and pushed you down below'. She cried out. Lucy was so confused. The visitor studied Lucy's face.
'You don't know who you are so how could you possibly know me?' she laugh. 'Such a shame... I use to take care of you before you betrayed me Francesca! ' Her reply made Lucy shocked to no ends. Francesca? that name pops out often. What could the visitor mean by that?
'What do you mean by that? Why are you looking for Francesca? Lucy asked again.
'You were still young back then. But, I sensed your all to familiar energy the moment you enter this place'. The visitor gave her a sardonic smile. Lucy tried to reason with the visitor and in fear for her own life.
The connection she felt was starting to kick in. This visitor was no ordinary ghost. Lucy's worst nightmare on all her years of fighting off the problem materialized before her. The woman walked inch by inch closer to her. Her eyes widen.
'Oh my god... you're a type three!' Lucy cursed. The visitor let out a scream and pushed her off the railings. Lucy screamed as she felt herself falling under. All of a sudden she felt a very strong wind catching her. She fell on the hard floor but there was no pain as the wind covering her prevented the nasty fall from happening. The woman let out an angry yell which accompanied by a shriek. Lucy looked up and saw a young greyish looking boy with spiky hair. She knew perfectly who that was.
'Skull!' Lucy Said with delight. she immediately got up to her feet. 'Wait, am i dead?'
'If you don't wake up soon you might just be.' He said. There was panic in his voice. Something Lucy did not expect to hear from him of all people. ' Lucy, you're dreaming'.
'What?' Lucy gaped in confusion. 'How's that possible? and why are you even here?
'She's the one causing the day dreams. You either need to wake the fuck up or consider getting ghost lock'. Said the Skull. The woman flew toward them. That was their cue to run.
'Head for the pool!' He cried out. They ran with all their might. The skull used his powers to hold off the woman by sending the paintings and furnitures flying mid air and throw them towards her. The woman tried blocking every blow. They arrived at the pool.
'You're gonna pay for what you did to me you silly girl! ' The woman's voice echoed everywhere all at once. The skull throwing the set of chairs to block the door of her path to them. He turned to look at Lucy who was shaking and panting hard as if she had ran a marathon for dear life.
'Time to wake up. Brace yourself'. He stretched out his hand to her while holding the other in place preventing the woman from come out. The strong gush of wind blew Lucy backwards causing her to fell into the water yet again.
Lucy opened her eyes. She gasped for air and her hand reached out the surface. She felt a painful pull at her legs and suddenly succumbed back into the dark water. It was all she could see then. Lucy was dead scared and never felt so distraught until now. She wanted to scream and cry. Someone grabbed her left hand. Lucy let out a yell as she turned to her left. Lockwood caught her just in time. His eyes gazed at her own. They had worry and fear written all over. He lunged forward and what happens then sent Lucy's head to an almost short circuit. He sealed their lips together and held her by the waist bringing their bodies together while swimming to the surface.
***
'Holy fuck!' Kipps said rather shockingly. They arrived at the pool area only to be greeted by a distraught Edwina. Holly immediately ran over to her to calm her down. Edwina told them she could not find Lucy and suspected that she fell into the pool. Lockwood wasted no time at all. He took off his coat and jumped straight into the water ignoring George and Kipps's yelling.
He swam up and then down. His heart beating fast fearing on what will happen to the girl he loves. He swam up to catch his breath only to be greeted by seeing series of flying chairs trying to block the entrance to the pool. The door banged hard as if something wanted to come in. He saw the Skull in the bag pack glowed ever brightly. Holly and Edwina screamed while Kipps and George already in a defending stance; pointing out their rapiers.
'What's happening?' Gregory said. His hand holding the rapier out rather shakily. He stood in front of Edwina and Holly in order to protect the ladies.
'I bloody don't know!' Kipps cursed. He felt the tension and rush.
'Lockwood get out of there!' George yelled when he saw him in the pool. He of course did not heed him. Lockwood turned to his front when he heard a loud splash. He saw a hand appearing only to be pulled under again. He dived once more and found Lucy. His Lucy is alive!
The two of them reached the surface. Lucy placed her arms around his neck for support and panted hard. She slumped her head on his shoulder and then started crying. It was a scary ordeal on what she thought could leas to her untimely death. Lucy was grateful to see him. Lockwood held her in his arms tightly. They were soaking wet and God knows how much of their energy was drained. George called out their names.
'Shit!' George said when he saw the state his two favourite people are in. 'Are you two okay? Someone grab a blanket or something'. Kipps helped Lockwood and Lucy got out of the pool. Lucy did not let go of Lockwood and stayed in his arms for a while. Lockwood tried comforting the frantic Lucy by stroking her back with his right hand.
'Shh...I've got you. I'm here now'. He whispered to her ear.
'Oh Anthony... It was horrible.' Lucy cried as she said his name. The settled down on the bench. Holly gave the two warm tea to beat the coldness they were feeling.
Lucy's body albeit covered with his coat still shaking from the cold. Lockwood held her close. He turned his eyes to the others. He pretty much guessed what goes on in their heads. None of them want stay longer. Lucy tried standing straight upon remembering something mighty important.
'I... know.... what the source is'. Lucy said word by word in an almost whisper. She felt her energy slowly drifting away from her body and her head was spinning. Then her visions went black. Luckily, Lockwood caught her in his arms.
***
Anthony, Colin and Mrs. Wilson came to their aid. Upon learning what happened, Anthony quickly called the doctor to tend on Lucy. Her body suffered from the coldness of being in the water too long. Mrs. Wilson had to cover the poor dear with three blankets. Lucy stayed in a newly available room where the doctors checked on her. Lockwood never left her side. The rest of the team waited patiently in the living room.
'This is my fault'. Anthony said. Edwina and Gregory begged to differ. 'I should provide more security'.
'No brother. Its not. Heck, none of us could predict this would happen.' Gregory said.
'That bloody ghost is a strong one. I hate to break it to you Viscount but i don't think your brother should move in that mansion'. Kipps said seriously.
'Lucy said she know what the source is'. Gregory said. George nodded.
'Let her rest first. We'll ask her when she's well enough. For the time being, its best that Ms. Carlyle stays out of the job'. Anthony instructed.
'She won't like that'. George said.
'Better her alive than dead Mr. Karim'. Anthony remarked. The others said nothing. The door opened and along came the Bridgerton's family doctor. Anthony stood up and walked toward him. George beat him to it.
'How is she doctor?' George asked.
'She's fine. You're all lucky that your teammate has a will made of iron that one. With good amount of rest and food, she'll be holding a rapier in a jiffy'. The doctor said to all of them. 'Did any of you knew she's allergic to bees? Best not let any near her'. Anthony's head shot up. That allergy information was all too similar to a certain someone very important in his life. The others shook their head.
'May we see Lucy?' Holly asked.
'I don't think so. She's still sleeping. Besides, I believe she is very well taken care of.' The doctor replied. Upon remembering Lockwood who was still upstairs with Lucy, the team felt assured.
Anthony however felt indifferent. Lucy was left alone with Lockwood and somehow it triggered something. Was he feeling jealous or is it the brotherly protective complex kicking? Since the boy Lockwood was always around Lucy, when Anthony looked at the two he almost felt as if someone wants to steal his little sister all over again.
He experienced the same thing when Daphne announced her relationship with Simon, his own best friend. That sent him on the edge of his seat as he very well know what kind of man Simon was back then. Slowly things began to change and he accepted their union. If he didn't, he bloody well know that his mother will most definitely kill Anthony from trying to separate the couple.
He shoved the feeling away. Who was he to question who Lucy chooses? She was not his sister. She was just another potential. Yes, he thought. Another potential. His mind wonder elsewhere. Simon's news was certainly coming in late and he had been patiently waiting. He did not want to arouse anymore suspicions from the man. Anthony escorted the doctor out.
'I took some samples of Ms. Carlyle's blood to see if there are any other symptoms'. The doctor's word was cut short. Knowing this, Anthony would not want to miss this golden opportunity.
'Could you do me a favour doctor? I would like to run some test'. Anthony then explained his reason. The doctor's expression looked as if someone dropped a bomb on top of his house.
'Oh my dear Viscount. This is a big issue indeed but if you're completely sure....' He paused. 'Come to the hospital when later. I'll set everything up for you'.
Anthony nodded with delight. The doctor bid him good day and drove off. Anthony turned behind only to find Colin standing at the entrance. He did not notice his presence. He gave Anthony a disbelieving look.
'Why do you need to run a DNA test on Ms.Carlyle?' Colin asked. 'Don't deny it Anthony. I heard your conversation'. Colin said. Anthony let out a long sigh. He did not expect for any of his family to catch him like this. Colin's facial expression suddenly change.
'Oh my God.... You're not still on to that matter are you? Anthony! you're being ridiculous again'. Colin said. 'She's been gone for years. Heck dead for all we know'.
'She is not dead Colin!' Anthony let out a firm tone. 'Francesca is still alive'.
Colin stood there flabbergasted. He could not believe that his elder brother would open old wounds that shook the very foundation of the Bridgerton family household for so many years.
'Do we mean little to you?' Colin uttered. Anthony knew what he meant.
'I loved all my siblings equally. You have no idea what its like watching our parents fell into despair of losing their child Colin..' He said.
'I do brother. I do....' Said Colin in an almost cry. He held back his tears. The thought of his dear little boy Thomas claimed by ghost lock left his heart almost crippled. Anthony placed his hands on Colin's shoulder.
'I....' Anthony tried finding the right words. ' I promised our father to continue the search. Now I believe.... Ms. Carlyle, she might be the one we're looking for.' Anthony let out a sad smile. His heart was full of hope and he truly want Colin to understand that. Colin did not say anything for a moment.
'And if she's not our sister, what then?' His brother question him.
'I'll keep on looking. I'll do what it takes to find her'. Anthony replied. The look in his eyes made Colin knew that the determination in Anthony Bridgerton was hard to snuff out. He then let out a long sigh.
'Alright. Do what you feels right then.' Colin said. He placed both hands on his hips. Anthony hugged his brother and thank the heavens for Colin's understanding. He let go.
'We will find her. Promise me you'll keep this to yourself.' He said. Colin nodded in reply.
Together the two brothers made their way back into the inn.
Chapter 5: The Girl Named Francesca
Summary:
Um... this is going to sound crazy but i thought i saw you in this picture' He said. 'Probably someone with the same face though.' George held the picture to her. Lucy turned it over and saw something she never thought to see the image of the little girl's face.
Simon... 'its her'. Anthony broke into a sob. 'She's my Frannie!'.
Notes:
Lets all take a moment to mourn for the loss we had yesterday when the Netflix dropped the bomb on us. My heart is hurting and i literally cannot describe how devastating that Lockwood & Co won't get a season 2 😭😭. The story was so good and is Netfix really THAT blind? I feel like someone has ripped my heart all over again. Ruby did not leave Bridgerton to be cancelled like this. My heart goes out to our iron trio. They are the best since the Harry Potter franchise. I pray that they'll be another platform to take on the story. We need to see book 4 & 5 happening!!! Oh my locklye heart😭😭.
Anyhow, i've manage to finish writing this chapter though its a wild ride due to glass case of emotional damage due to the news. I hope all the Locknation is well and stay strong. We can get through this....
Chapter Text
When Lucy woke up, she felt the need to consume a lot of pain killers because her head was throbbing and her body felt weak. The pain from ghost touch inflicted on her body was bearable after Holly's quick rescue with the meds.
What time is it? She thought.
The whole room was partially dark. Lucy's eyes landed at the window. How long did she passed out? Even she could not tell. Her eyes furrowed at the feeling of something hard around her waist. Oh, It was Lockwood's arm. He was in deep sleep behind her. How soft and calm he looked. Lucy tucked a piece of his fringe a little to the right. His steady breathing calmed her nerves. He must be so exhausted after tonight. Lucy could watch him sleep all day but she needs to move and she was too thirsty to go back to sleep. Lucy wants water and she needed it now. Lucy gently pull herself away from lockwood's embrace careful not to wake the boy. She got up and slowly walked out of the bedroom.
Lucy crept downstairs to get a glass of water but was surprised to find that the lights in the kitchen were on. She was greeted by the sight of Mrs. Wilson. The old woman noticed her by the door and invited her for a spot of tea. Lucy notices the clock on the wall showing it was half past four.
'How are you feeling my dear?' She asked. Mrs. Wilson lay out some biscuits for the tired girl to eat.
'I'm okay...' Lucy took one biscuit and ate it with gusto.
'Ooh, you poor girl. Slow down or you'll choke yourself.' Mrs. Wilson warned. Lucy did as she was told and ate slowly.
'Sorry.' She apologized. Lucy wiped her mouth with the back of her hand.
Mrs. Wilson watched her as she ate. Lucy who was not used to being stared at could only manage to eat in silence. After all, why waste good biscuits when its presented to you.
'Its a nice kitchen'. Lucy said. 'Have you always lived here?'
'Oh, no. The Viscount kindly let me stay here when I retired. I was his Head Housekeeper at Aubrey Hall.' Mrs. Wilson smiled. She pours some more tea for herself and Lucy.
'You must've known the Bridgerton's for a long time then'. Lucy said. Mrs. Wilson let out a hearty chuckle.
'They are an interesting bunch indeed. The dowager Viscountess is a wonderful lady. Shame, her husband died early. She takes care of the children all by herself. We all help with what we can'. She said calmly.
'May i ask... if its okay of course....' Lucy did not know how to approach the subject but seeing Mrs. Wilson knew the family well, she might have answers that Lucy seek. 'Do you know who Francesca is?'
Mrs. Wilson's expression changes. There was a long silence and Lucy almost gave up the thought of ever getting an answer. Mrs. Wilson placed her tea cup on the table.
'Yes.... I know her. She used to walk these grounds. Before this was converted into an inn, it use to be the Bridgerton's summer house.' Mrs. Wilson explained.
Lucy learned that Francesca was Anthony's little sister. She was quiet and reserved. That of course did not stop her from being rather mischivious along with her siblings in which causes the nannies the Bridgerton couple hired had headaches.
'I remember that little feet of hers dancing about while trying to mirror Master Benedict's own steps and then playing dress up with Lady Daphne. Oh back then everything was jolly well'.
'What happened to her?' Lucy asked. She took another sip of her tea. Mrs. Wilson's face turned to a sad one.
'She disappeared. Or, to put it simple... gone'. Mrs. Wilson look down on her wrinkly hands.
'She's dead?' Lucy voiced. She did not mean to assume the worst. Mrs. Wilson shook her head.
'No dear. Francesca was listed out as a missing person. Her father and the police searched everywhere. Its like she was gone into thin air. You couldn't imagine Lady Violet's poor nerves.' Said Mrs. Wilson. 'Loosing her child and then her beloved husband after.' Lucy sympathized with the family.
It was one of the dark secrets hardly anyone would speak of. Lucy did not dare to ask anymore further as the sad look on the old lady's face indicates the uncomfortable feeling of just talking about it. She helped Mrs. Wilson clean up and then headed back upstairs.
In her bed, she thought about the visitor and her connection with the Bridgerton girl, Francesca. She decided to tell Lockwood about it in the morning. Slowly Lucy nuzzled her face against his neck and placed a hand on his chest. She liked Lockwood's smell and it comforts her. Lucy felt safer with him than with anybody else for that matter. All her life she wanted to be accepted and loved. Lucy felt Lockwood shifting. His eye slowly opened meeting with her owh. Lucy took this opportunity for a surprise attack kiss. It worked because she felt Lockwood's hand caressing her back up and down.
'Hey...' Lucy whispered against his lips. Lockwood slowly sat upright with Lucy. He pulled her into a tight embrace.
'Oh God, I thought i lost you'. He did not mean for it to sound like a cry. Lucy held him close with her fingers deep buried in his hair. She shushed him.
'i'm here. We're together now....Oh Anthony.' The name she used whenever they are alone and he loved the sound of it coming from her soft lips. Lockwood buried his face in her neck.
'Don't leave me..' He cried.
'Never...' Lucy whispered lovingly to him. Lockwood left trail of kisses on her shoulder. Slowly, they rested their head on the pillow again. His thumb circled her right cheek. He leaned in for another kiss. They broke apart for air. Lucy closed her eyes and embrace the boy further. She was too tired to say or argue about whatever he has to say. Lockwood understood that. Maybe another time then. Lucy was thankful to have him with her during all the trying times. She was grateful to meet with Lockwood and Co and loved her teammates. In short, Lucy was content with the life she had now. The pair stayed tangled in each others embrace till the morning light rises.
****
The whole team gathered in the library to discuss last night's event. It shocked them to learn that the visitor was a type three. Lucy confirmed that the ghost lure the victims to their deaths by using day dreams. The Skull beamed when Lucy mentioned the story of how he saved her. The last thing she remembered was waking up in the pool. Everyone went silent for a moment.
'Skull, did you feel any energy on her? like a grudge perhaps?' Lockwood asked.
'More than that. She reeks of revenge'. The skull answered. Lucy relay the message to Lockwood.
'Well, that's one way of putting it. We got ourselves a murder victim'. Kipps said.
'Luce, you mentioned that the ghost knew the girl Francesca. This means, the timeline of her murder might not stretch long before the Hugo Bridgerton had the mansion'. Said George.
'My sentiments exactly.' Lockwood pointed out. 'Holly, i need you and Ms. Sharma to go to town and ask around. Find us some leads.'
'On it.' Holly nodded.
As much as Lucy hated the fact that the Viscount pulled her out of the task, Lucy had no choice but to obey. In the mean time, Gregory and Edwina will continue lending Lockwood and Co their assistance.
'We need to question some of the family members and staff. I'd say Francesca's disappearance might connect with her murder'. Lockwood elaborated. 'Could you and George cover that too?'
'Yeah, sure'. Lucy said. George nodded in reply.
'Did the ghost said anything else about Francesca?' George asked.
'She said Francesca was the one that did that to her. Though, I don't think a mere little girl like Francesca is capable of killing someone. It doesn't make sense'. Lucy said.
'There might be a possibility Luce. Kids sometimes can be scary. Take Leopold for instance'. Lockwood said.
'She was missing at the age of five Lockwood. They never found her body. Just her little pink shoe near the river.' Lucy said.
'Where is that river?' Kipps asked.
'Its near to the mansion.' She said. 'One has to cross the woods to get there'.
With the emergence of the two death glows that Lockwood saw in the master bedroom he placed the task to George to find. Spending time at the library and interviewing the Bridgerton family was not on Lucy's list of things to do. Like she had any choice. Lockwood and Kipps had their own task to do.
'Cheer up. You're going to Aubrey Hall'. Kipps grinned at Lucy.
'Like that's ever going to make me feel better.' Lucy grumbled. Anthony Bridgerton was no boss of hers. 'Who's he to decide what i do?'
'Well, the Viscount is the one that's gonna pay us you know'. George replied which earn another soft grunt from Lucy. George and Lucy had their bags. Lucy insisted to bring the Skull along with her as she needed his knowledge on type three ghosts.
With crossed arms against her chest, Lucy was already glaring at Lockwood for not taking her side. Lockwood scratched a hand behind his head. Nonetheless, he was keeping her safe and Lucy cannot argue with that. Colin was waiting for them at the door. He accompanied Lucy and George to Aubrey Hall. The trio drove off to the said destination.
'Thank you for inviting us. Uh, will the Viscount be there?' George asked. He sat behind with the skull.
'My brother has business somewhere else. Kate is expecting us. She already made preparations for your research'. Said Colin. George thanked him. How are you feeling Ms. Carlye?'
Lucy turned to her right. 'I'm okay.' She said then proceed looking outside the car window.
Colin secretly looked at her once in a while. The hair, the face and even the stature, nothing about her was Bridgerton potential. His bother's words struck him last night. Hopefully, by bringing Lucy to Aubrey Hall might provide him with answers they seek.
****
The estate could not have been more beautiful. George had never seen such breathtaking mansion in his life and the Bridgertons certainly live up to that standards. Somehow, for the girl that was sitting in the front seat of the car could only gaze in wonder. Why does she feel as if she has been here before? Was it in one of her dreams? The distant memories she tried to remember? Lucy had no answer to that. As she stepped out of Colin's car she could see Kate at the entrance with a woman and child. The little girl came running to greet Colin.
'Daddy!' She ran for a hug. Colin lifted her in his arms. Lucy and George stood in silence.
'Hello sweetheart. Did you have fun playing with mummy? Said Colin.
'Mummy is teaching me to play cards'. Said the little one rather chirpy. This must be Jane, Lucy thought.
The red haired lady came down the stairs to greet them. Colin embraced his wife and placed a kiss on her head. Although there was a pleasant smile on her face, The lightly visible reddish colour in her eyes sent Lucy to a sympathetic motion. She must have been crying again. Penelope Bridgerton shook hands with Lucy.
'Come on in, you must be exhausted'. Kate gestured to her guests. George and Lucy walked with the Bridgertons into their humble abode.
'Wow, I feel like i'm being invited by the Queen for tea'. George said with excitement upon seeing the interior of the mansion.
'No kidding. Pity Lockwood didn't come with us'. Lucy chuckled at the thought of what it might look like if he did come with them here.
'This is Johnathan and he'll be assisting you at the library. If there's anything you need, you may call upon him'. Kate added. The handsome footmen bowed to the two guest. George blinked and leaned near to Lucy's ear.
'Is it me or to become servants of the Bridgerton household one has to meet a certain criteria? Damn, they're all good looking.' George complement. Lucy chose not to comment on that. Both of them followed Kate and Colin to the library. Penelope and Jane retired to the living room. They were not alone when they enter the library.
'Of all places, i cannot believe my brother does not have the recent copy of The Atlas of hauntings in Asia book in his library'. The girl said as she decent down the stairs.
'Ah, morning Eloise'. Colin greeted. Eloise walked to them and hugged her brother. She turned facing George and then to Lucy. Her eyes studied the girl in front of her. Her face reminded her of someone. Eloise shook her head at the thought.
'Hi. Sorry, I've made a bit of a mess in here. Trying to sort out some stuff. You must be the people my brother mentioned coming'. Eloise said. 'Feel free to look around'.
'Thank you'. George replied. Lucy merely nodded in reply.
The family except for Eloise left the two guests to start working. For the past hours on end George have been flipping through the pages on the history of Brunswick mansion. Lucy on the other hand could feel herself almost died of boredom by being relived of duty. Nonetheless, she helped George with what she could. Having had enough of walking down history lane, Lucy rested her eyes and walk about the library. She saw Eloise sorting through some of her family albums. Eloise smiled to Lucy.
'My mother's birthday is next week. We thought it would be fun to create a collage for her when she was little up till now.' She said.
'She's very pretty.' Lucy said upon laying eyes on a picture in Eloise's hand.
The smile of Lady Violet warms her heart and Lucy remembers what Mrs. Wilson said about the Dowager Vicountess. There was another picture Lucy saw that caught her attention. Eloise mentioned that her parents wedding was a grand affair.
'Even the Queen made an appearance. Her lady in waiting was mama's maid of honor'. Eloise said. The couple looked very happy in their younger years. Something Lucy thought hopefully her and Lockwood would be like one day. Another picture caught her eye. There were some of the children of the Bridgerton but one particular person stood out from the rest. Lucy snatched the picture on the table with wide eyes.
'George!' She cried out surprising both the boy and Eloise. George tilted his head and got uo walking to the girls. Lucy showed the picture to him.
'What is that?' George asked.
'Its her! Its the ghost.' Lucy said rather alarmingly.
'Do you know who she is?' Lucy asked Eloise.
'She's our former nanny'. Eloise said. 'I'm sorry, what do you mean ghost? As far as i know, my mother said Ms. Bunting left us to take care of her ailing father'. Eloise frowned. She did not understand what was going on. George and Lucy looked at one another and then to her.
'Ms. Bridgerton, may we have an audience you your mother? We would like to ask a few questions'. George said. Eloise cannot promise but she will try. She.and Johnathan walked out of the room leaving George and Lucy alone. 'Lucy, are you sure that's the woman you saw?' George asked again.
'Positive.' Lucy nodded. She pointed at the face of a tall and bony looking lady. 'She's the one that attacked me last night'. Lucy studied picture of the lady and the Bridgerton boys around her. George browsed the pictures on the table. His eyes did a double take and took one photograph of The late Viscount and a little girl by his side. Things are starting to get more confusing by the minute. George recalled Lucy showing him a picture of Mary and her when they were little. He stared at her and the to the picture again a few times. George's mouth fell open.
'What?' Lucy's brow furrowed.
'Um... this is going to sound crazy but i thought i saw you in this picture' He said. 'Probably someone with the same face though.' George held the picture to her. Lucy turned it over and saw something she never thought to see the image of the little girl's face.

Anthony paced left to right. Simon who was sitting down on the sofa of his office tried to read the expression on his brother in-law's face. He was a cascade full of mess ever since he came to his office. The man sitting opposite of him calmly enjoying his tea. The opened envelope and its contents scattered on the coffee table.
'Let me get the straight. Lucy Carlyle was indeed, adopted?'. Anthony voiced.
'Indeed. We traced back her origins as far as her hometown in Kent. According to sources, Mrs. Carlyle took her in when she was five of age.' He said.
'Kaz, you said the Carlyles had a different name before they changed it. What was the name?' Simon asked.
'Its in the papers Simon'. Kaz paused 'Inej didn't prepare those for me to say it all. Do have a look at it'. Kaz replied and then took a sip of his tea.
'Harrison... why dies that name sound so familiar?' Anthony frowned in thought.
'That's because he once worked as a caretaker at one of your family estate. Its now a spa and inn i presume?' Kaz said. That caught the Viscounts attention.
'Francesca inn and spa'. Simon said. He turned to the pale looking Anthony. The Viscount sat back on the sofa next to him.
'Your sister disappearance, Mr. Carlyle's resignation a week after... what do you think might happened?' Kaz poured in a thought for the two gentlemen.
'No way, he couldn't. I mean, but why?' Said Anthony.
'Waylan managed to track the doctor that treated Ms. Carlyle. He said the girl came in looking wet, disheviled, lost and confused.' Kaz added. 'In Short, she suffered memory loss'.
'Memory loss?' Anthony said in disbelief. Kaz nodded as he showed them the copy of Lucy's medical records.
'I've done some digging about that family. Horrible people i might add. The father was an abusive man and the mother is even worse'. Kaz paused for a moment. 'None of her family possess any talents except for Lucy. My theory is that the Carlyles might have kept her on a leash because she's their money maker. That is until the incident at Withburn Mill.'
'What happened there?' Anthony asked.
'I've heard about them. It was in the news once. No one survived except one agent'. Simon said.
Kaz told them about the incident in detail. Anthony's heart clenched at the thought of Lucy having to endure the harshness of the Carlyles and public scrutiny of the villagers. While he and his family were all living in bliss, the poor girl lived having to fend for herself just to survive another day. There were also records of Lucy being brought to series of clinics to treat her wounds due to injuries from the jobs she took but some shocked him even more. Anthony learned that Lucy was abused by both her parents and often times she ran to hide from them at a friends house. According to Kaz that friend of hers was worked with her at a company name Jacobs and was now ghost locked.
'She started working for Lockwood and Co two years ago. That's where thing starts to be a bit kind. She's lucky to have found a good associate. Can't imagine what else were to happen if she stayed at Jacobs or with her family'. Said Kaz. 'Inej found something you might want to see'.
Kaz turned to another page and showed anthony a picture that made the man almost lose his breath. The picture of a five year old Lucy Carlyle in a hospital gown. Her face was filled with bruises as if she had been punched. It ached his heart even more when he landed the look on her innocent young eyes. The eyes he knew belonged to his father. He took the picture from Kaz. There were pool of tears swelling in his eyes. He recognized the little girl.
'Simon... 'its her'. Anthony broke into a sob. 'She's my Frannie!'.
Chapter 6: Escape From Aubrey Hall
Summary:
'You're scared... ' The Skull felt her emotions. Lucy forgot to turn of his lever.
Her eyes met that of Anthony's own. Whether she has made an enemy of the Viscount and his family, Lucy really did not care. Judging by Anthony's weird courtesy to her and the other members of Lockwood and Co, in a short span of time, somehow they become wanted fugitives.

Chapter Text
Kipps wander about the backyard area of Brunswick mansion. The cold air made his skin tingle a bit. Lockwood made sure to make use of the daylight to investigate the mansion grounds since the energy emitting from the visitors during that time was weaker. For the time being, they did not enter the mansion itself only within the grounds. After that, Gregory led the two boys down the road that leads into the woods. The three of them decided to go to the river Lucy mentioned.
'Don't know much about Ms. Bunting really. I was still a baby when she left. Hyacinth was not born yet'. Gregory explained. 'I heard stories from Eloise that she was a peculiar nanny. She favoured the boys more than the girls but Francesca was an exceptional'.
'She cared more of her I suppose?' Lockwood asked. Gregory shrugged.
'My brother always mentioned that Frannie was different. She's the only girl in the family that possessed a talent. I guess that's why Ms. Bunting favoured her more'. Gregory replied. The trio walked deeper along the road in the woods. The wind around the area brushed softly against their skin. The cloudy sky above was enough to put anyone's mood off.
'What kind of talent she had? Did any of your family had talents too?' Lockwood question further. Somehow this peaked his interest.
'Anthony did. Before his talents fade, he had excellent listening skills. Frannie too. My father and Anthony were the only people who can calm her down whenever she got scared of listening to the noises from the visitors. One time, my father brought her to Lady Danbury's house. She got so scared and retaliate from coming in. My family couldn't stay long after that'. Gregory told him.
Kipps have heard about the story. It turns out that there was a ghost of an old lady lurking in the drawing room. The source was a small trinket and Fittes managed to secure it. They arrived at the river. The tall grass made it a bit hard for them to move forward to the edge but luckily, they had their rapiers so it was an easy cut. Lockwood scanned the area.
'Not much to find here.' Kipps added. The goggles strapped on his eyes showed no movement from the surroundings 'Hey, Tony. You see anything? He gestured to Lockwood but found that he was not next to him. His eyes then saw Lockwood standing on the docks. Kipps made his way toward him.
'Lockwood, i don't think there's anything suspicious here. We should search elsewhere.' Kipps said. The coldness of the weather was starting to get to his skin. Lockwood however did not budge. Kipps tapped him on the shoulder twice in which startled the boy.
'We really should go before it starts raining'. Kipps added. Lockwood did not want to leave just yet.
'Where's Gregory?' Lockwood asked.
They noticed the boy was not around the area. That alerted them. Kipps and Lockwood searched further in front. Suddenly, they herd noises and saw Gregory with his rapier at hand. He was standing underneath a large oak tree. Lockwood quickly rushed towards him with Kipps running not far behind. What he saw shocked him but it was not an unpleasant sight at all.
'I'm warning you. This is private property and you are traspassing!' Gregory said sternly. The young woman in front of him could only let out a smirk.
'Easy there posh kitty. Grow taller a few inches first, then we'll have a fight'. She said. Lockwood stood next to Gregory and smiled at the girl. Kipps gestured his hand up as a hello to her.
'Fancy seeing you here Flo'. Lockwood greeted her. Gregory turned to Lockwood and then to Flo.
'You know this creature?' He frowned.
'She's an acquaintance of Lockwood and Co so if you could just lower down your rapier that would be very much helpful'. He instructed.
'She stole something from the property. I caught her digging over there'. Gregory pointed out. Flo stood up .
'Hey Locky'. Flo greeted. 'I see you've got yourself a new pet.' Gregory almost growled.
'Excuse me, i happen to be an agent'. He hissed. His fistiness remind Flo of a certain person. Talk about deja vu. Flo let out a small chuckle. 'Huh, for a moment there i thought you hired another Carlyle'.
'What have you got there Flo?' Lockwood asked, trying to divert the tension between Gregory and Flo. She knew Lockwood would eventually find out so there was no point in hiding it from him anyway.
'O just a couple of good stuff. I sensed bad energy around this area so here I am looking for some relic for a living'. She added.
'Relic hunters cannot be trusted. You people only make things worse for us agents by stealing sources'. Gregory spat. Lockwood gestured to Kipps to bring the boy elsewhere. He did not fancy Gregory to insult his dear friend like that. Kipps took Gregory by the arm and the two walked off much to Gregory's protest.
'Sorry about that'. Lockwood apologized for Gregory's behavior.
'Nothing that i've never heard before. So, what brings you to this side of the country? Where's George? Flo asked. She kind of liked to see him.
'He's at Aubrey Hall with Lucy. We're doing some jobs at this property. The boy you met just now, his family owns this estate'. Lockwood replied.
'Huh, that explains'. Flo shrugged as her eyes darted towards Gregory.
She placed the items she dug into a bag made of iron thread which she stole from a long time ago. Lockwood cannot help but ask to see them. Flo showed him a few stuff. One familiar item caught his eye. Flo handed him the small toy teddy bear.
'Where did you found this?' Lockwood asked. Flo pointed to him the hole she dug a while ago.
Lockwood called onto Kipps and Gregory. The four of them stood in front of the hole that Flo had dug out. Lockwood needed Gregory's expertise since the boy's talent was sense of touch. Gregory also possessed the talents of a listener but his sense of touch was stronger. Gregory's expression showed that he disliked the idea but one has to do it. He bent lower and place his hand on the ground. He closed his eyes to hear the voices from the past.
'There's bad energy coming from this particular site'. He confirmed. Sensing nothing else, Gregory immediately got up and wiped his hands.
'What about this one?' Lockwood handed him the shabby looking teddy bear. The colour wared off and it was dirty with mud over the years.
'I'm not touching anymore dirt. That's filthy!' Gregory said. Kipps rolled his eyes.
'You can either touch it or we can stay here all day. Come on, you were once a Fittes agent. Don't make us former seniors look foolish just because you're afraid to touch dirty objects'. Kipps sounded. 'You'll face more bizzare things in the future so better start cracking Gregster'.
'Nice one Kippy'. Flo smiled amusingly at the given name Kipps gave to the young boy.
Gregory grunted. In the end he took the item from Lockwood. He closed his eyes and tapped into the the psychic hum he slowly felt coming. The psychic energy began to stir in his mind. Gregory felt his chest constricted and for a short moment he felt a strong pain behind his head.
'Ow... My head hurts so bad right now. Something happened to the owner of this item'. He paused for a moment. 'I think she was attacked from the back'. Gregory said while rubbing the throbbing pain behind his head.
Flo, i may need to keep this. This could serve as hard evidence.'. Lockwood said much to Flo's dismay. In the end, she agreed to let it go
'Shh, I can hear something...' Gregory gestured his hands for all of them to be quiet. Kipps took off his goggles. Faint voices rang about inside Gregory's ear.
'Stupid! Why did you hit her head? You could've simply pushed her over the balcony!' Said the voice that belonged to a woman.
'She saw us love. Can't let her get away. We'll keep her first. That listening talent of hers could be proven useful for us'. The man said. He grabbed a few stuff and placed it into the boat.
'What about Eustace? Did you get rid of his body?' The woman asked. Before the man could answer. there were sound of footsteps coming. The man turned around.
'Oh... Amelia. Darling, this isn't what it looks like'. The man said.
'You lying cheater!' The woman screamed.
The screaming voice emerged made Gregory flinched. There were slashing sounds in the background made the boy stumble a few steps backward. Gregory opened his eyes at the sharp stabbing he felt. Lockwood caught the boy before he could fall. The teddy bear fell off his hand and lay flat on the ground. Gregory's forehead covered with heavy sweat and hr went pale. Kipps offered some chocolates to help calm the young boy's nerves. Gregory shook his head to decline.
'That thing is not a source but it carries horrible memories'. He said rather depressed. 'They've killed someone Lockwood.... ' Gregory somehow cannot find the heart to finish his words. His crying was real and loud this time. 'I- I think these people are the ones who took my sister!'

Holly and Edwina managed to interview a handful of people in the village. There was an interesting information the two found. News once spread around town about a boy that died. His only living family resides at the house close to the village church. The pair walked toward the house mentioned by the locals. Edwina knocked at the door. Moments later they are greeted by an old lady. She had greyish white hair and a plump figure. Her apron was crisped and tidy.
'May i help you?' She asked. The lady noticed the rapiers around the girls belts. They must be agents. she thought. 'If you're looking for ghost, you won't find them here-' Her words were cut short.
'Mrs. Brown. I am Holly Munro from Lockwood and Co and this is Ms. Edwina Sharma. We would like to ask a few questions about your son.... uh, Eustace Brown'. Said Holly.
The old lady stared at the pair for a while and after much contemplation, she invited them in. Holly and Edwina looked at each other and then to the Mrs. Brown. She placed two mugs of tea for her guest. Holly's eyes landed on the pictures hanging by the wall. They were newspaper cut outs of one particular person. All pointed to one particular young man.
'Eustace was a special kind of boy. He have always been a dreamer'. Mrs. Brown spoke.
'How long did he worked for the Bridgertons?' Edwina asked. Holly was already writing down important notes.
'Oh, about a few years. He once worked as one of the sensitives and night watch kids before Ms. Bunting took him in'. She said. 'Between you and me i never fancy that woman. Eustace however worshiped her'.
'Do you know her?' Edwina asked.
'I don't give a damn about that horrid lady' She scowled. 'The last thing i heard is that she ran off with a married man. Nasty woman i say!' Mrs. Brown huffed. Holly and Edwina continued to listen.
Ms. Bunting landed Eustace a job as a caretaker's assistant. He helped the caretaker to take care of the current inn which was previously a summer house for the Bridgertons. Mrs. Brown always commented to her son that his infatuation for Mrs. Bunting was an unhealthy affair and feared that it could lead to his undoing. She often tossed her dislike and told Eustace that he could find a better women than Ms. Bunting. Eustace of course did not heed his her words and continue to shower his affection to the lady. Mrs. Brown recalled Eustace doing odd jobs as per instructed by Ms. Bunting. Edwina however had her own assumption.
'One day when Eustace returned from work, he looked so utterly depressed. He didn't eat and locked himself in his room. I knew there was something wrong. It turns out my boy was heartbroken'. She told them.
'Did she rejected his love?' Holly asked. She felt sorry for the young man.
'That i don't know but he did told me the news that his supervisor, Mr. Harrison & Ms. Bunting kissing at the grounds of Brunswick Mansion'. Mrs. Brown spat.
'He caught them cheating?' Edwina said looking rather appalled.
'Not really. It was the little misses that told him about it. The one Bridgerton child that went missing years ago. God rest her soul'. She said.
Holly and Edwina gathered the pieces together. So it was not only a lovers affair but a big conspiracy cover up and foul play. After a while, the pair thanked Mrs. Brown left the house. Eustace's death and Francesca's disappearance was no mere coincidence.
'Lover's jealousy you mean?' Edwina asked.
'That's variable number one. Eustace was madly in love with Mrs. Bunting. Learning of her affair, could get him result into killing. Mrs. Brown said so herself that her son was not of right mind'. Holly explained.
'Out of jealousy.' Edwina said. Holly nodded.
'What about Francesca? The ghost clearly said the girl did that to her' Edwina wondered. Holly stopped walking and turn toward Edwina. There was a ring to the truth in what she said. The little girl could not possibly commit the murder.
'The only theory i can cone up with is that she saw Ms.Bunting and Mr. Harrison affair. The pair might hushed her up just like Eustace'. Edwina nodded in understanding.
'We've got to tell the others. This might be huge'. The two continued making their was back to the inn. 'I hope the boys have something good for us. By the way, i've been meaning to ask'. Edwina said. 'Where did you buy that skirt? It look so beautiful'.
'Oh, i bought it at a thrift store'. Holly smiled. She then gave it a twirl.
'I love thrift stores. They always have a lot of good stuff. One time, my sister and I found a 1910's frock. It was a bargain and Kate of course did some DIY and designed a nice gown out of it'.Said Edwina
She insisted for Holly to show her the that place once the case is over in which Holly gladly obliged. Together the ladies headed back to the inn.

Violet set her tea aside and eyed on the two guest in front of her. Penelope and Kate sat on the opposite side of them. Lucy looked at the face of the lady in wonder. Her heart slightly thumping ever since she laid eyes on the Dowager Viscountess a while ago. Questions ran like fireworks bursting her mind.
Everything about her life so far has been such a mystery. Often times she wondered if any of her biological family was looking for her. As she grew older, she gave up over the thought of ever seeing them and Lucy then accepted her fate.
The Carlyles were not entirely horrid but Lucy knew what it felt to be an outsider. Mary on the other hand welcomed her like a true sister and she together with Norrie was Lucy's only coping mechanism. The coming of Lockwood and Co made all the difference and she was glad to call them her real family.
In a way, deep down she wondered what her biological family would be like. The portrait of Edmund Bridgerton and the other picture of him with the little girl George found at Aubrey Hall library was enough to make Lucy feeling scared at what she will find next. In her heart she wanted to know the truth behind her existence. In a way, Lucy needed answers and she thought Lady Violet might have more information to solve the mystery.
'The only thing i can tell you is that Ms. Bunting left us in such a hurry saying she has to care for her ill family member'. Said Violet.
'With all due respect your Ladyship, I did a few research of my own about her'. George said. 'I rang some people back in the archives this morning to look onto Mrs. Bunting. It turns out she had no relatives and was orphaned ma'am'. Said George. 'She was in the care system up till the age of 16'.
'That's impossible. As far as i know Mrs. Bunting went back to care for her sister. Unless...' Violet paused for a moment. 'It can't be... surely'.
'What is it Violet?' Kate asked.
'Well, i heard rumors that she was involved in an affair with a married man. If she did ran away with him, back then Lady Whistledown would've gossip about it in her article'. Said Violet.
'I'm sorry, lady who?' George frowned. Violet showed him a copy of Lady Whisltedown's article.
He took them and turned to Lucy. It was a gossip column and something George knew Lockwood would enjoy reading. Lady Whistledown was a local town newspaper company. According to Violet, there has been three generations of journalist that carried her persona throughout the years. The current Lady Whistledown was unknown to all as she and her predecessors hid their identity well.
'You can trust her. She's a reliable source'. Violet added.
'I collect copies on some of her old articles. I can show them if you like'. Said Penelope. Lucy thanked her for it.
'There is another thing we'd like to ask you'. Lucy took out the photo of Edmund and the little girl next to him.
Violet's smile faded from her face. George thought Lucy might have overdone it this time but some questions needed answer. He too was curious. Violet held the photo in her hand.
she caressed the picture of her husband and daughter. Lucy asked her about the little girl.
'She's my little girl'. Violet answered. The sad tone coming from her made Lucy want to run to her and hug the Dowager Viscountess.
'Beautiful soul she was. Come to think of it, she might be around your age if she was alive'. Said Violet.
George eyed Lucy a look but chose to say nothing. Francesca's disappearance was a big blow for Edmund and Violet. It happened a three days after Ms. Bunting left the family. What shocked the others further was the discovery of her pink little shoe. They thought she fell into the river but the authorities never found her body. Violet nearly went mad. Anthony and his father continued the search.
'The last that anyone saw her she was with one of our workers. They never returned'. Said Violet.
'Who was it?' Lucy asked desperately.
'Eustace Brown'. Violet said. 'We thought he kidnapped her but shockingly, the police found his body hanging inside the master bedroom of Brunswick mansion. They said the boy committed suicide'. Violet trembled at the memory.
Lucy wanted to hold Lady Violet's hand to comfort her but she had to remain professional in her work. She till cannot see how Eustace's death was connected to the missing child.
The doors oof the living room burst open in which surprised all of them. Colin looked like he ran a mile. His eyes fixed on both George and Lucy.
'Colin dear, what is the matter? Violet startled.
'Uh, I need a moment with everyone except Ms. Carlyle and Mr. Karim. Johnathan, could you escort my mother and the ladies to the drawing room please?' Colin instructed. The footman did as he was told.
With questionable expression on their faces, all the Bridgerton ladies walked out from the living room leaving George and Lucy behind. George recalled back the pale look on Mr. Bridgerton's face. Lucy however wondered what could be that important Colin needed to talk to his family in private. She stared at the clock on the wall. It was almost nearing dinner time.
'What's taking them so long? We should be back at the inn by now'. Said George with his arms crossed against his chest. Lucy decided to go to the washroom but surprisingly, she found that the door of the living room was locked. Her brows furrowed as she stood in silence.
'When was this locked?' Lucy whispered to herself. 'George...' Lucy called out. George noticed and sprang on his feet and hurried toward her. He too gave it a try at the door but the same thing happened. They looked at each other and then toward the door.
'It's locked from the outside'. George said with a suspicious look. He turned to Lucy and then something in his mind clicked.
'What?' Lucy furrowed in confusion. George tried not to get ahead of himself. He has been trying to register his thoughts but clearly, there was something at play here.
'Lucy, Idon't like to say this.... I think we need to get out of this house'. George said. Lucy looked dumbfounded.
'Wha-why? George, we haven't even finish questioning her Ladyship yet-' Her words were cut short.
'Lucy listen. Don't you think that its odd the ghost said it knew you? and then you kept complaining to us that you try to remember a face you always saw in your dreams, which happens to be the late Viscount.' George explained. 'At first i thought that everything was just a coincidence or you developed another psychic connection or maybe healing from long term trauma but this...' He held the picture up. 'It means something Lucy. Does that ring a bell to you?'
Lucy's complexion turned pale. Impossible! she thought. 'George, do you know how crazy you sound right now? I know what you're thinking. I am not Francesca Bridgerton. I -i can't be. I am Lucy Carlyle for heaven sake'. Lucy argued. 'I'm... i'm nobody'.
George stayed silent though he knew Lucy's tone of voice starting to betray even herself. She heave a long sigh and place a hand on her forehead. Voices in her head screamed at her to get things done and over with. But now, she not quite sure.
'We came here so we can solve the case, not delve into my past'. Lucy said. George did not want to argue further.
'Look, if it makes you feel better let's go back and sort things out at the inn. We've been here too long. Lockwood and the others will be waiting for us'. George suggested.
'What about your research? We still need those Lady Wistledown's papers'. Said Lucy. George sigh corrected his glasses.
'If there's one thing i learned from our case at Comb Carey Hall, i don't fancy being trapped in big houses. Even the one lively as this.'
There was a clicking sound by the door. Their heads turned in unison and then to each other. She and george vibe the same thoughts and then nodded. Lucy quickly took a vase on the table and then stood against the wall next to the door. To hell with the expensive vase! She was ready to knock whichever Bridgerton that was coming in. George stayed to where he stand; his heart pounding. The door opened abruptly. George almost cussed out loud.
'Shit, Lockwood! You scared the hell out of me'. George cried out. Lucy's eyes widen as she saw his tall figure coming in. She cast the vase aside and ran into his arms. He was not alone apparently. George's eyes gleamed at the sight of someone familiar standing at the doorway. She flashed him a smile in which George happily returned it with his own.
'Hello gorgeous'. Flo waved to him. Lucy could have sworn she saw a bit of blush appearing from George's cheeks. She too climbed over.
'Flo! What are you doing here?' Lucy asked.
'Long story and no time to explain'. The relic girl said.
'How did you two get passed security?' George asked.
'We'll explain later. For now we to go. Holly and Kipps are waiting for us in the car. Come on'. George did not questioned furher and did as he was told. Lockwood took her hand in his. The four of them headed out.
'Wait, what car?' It dawned to her something she did not expect to say out loud. 'Surely, Kipps not the one driving? When did he even learn to drive?'
'I think what you should be asking who's car did he stole?' George commented.
'If you're wondering to whom it belongs, its the Viscount'. Lockwood gave the name. That left both George and Lucy's mouth fell open.
'Are you out of your mind? Oh we're so not gonna get paid'. George hissed. He was starting to feel scared at the prospect of being thrown behind bars by Anthony Bridgerton.
****
George saw Johnathan the footman from earlier lying unconscious on the floor. Flo reassured him that the man is still breathing. Lucy stopped on her tracks. She informed Lockwood that the Skull and their stuff was still in the library. Lockwood alerted George and Flo to stay at the living room while Lucy and him go fetch the skull. Lucy began to think that something might have happened at the inn. Although he desperately tries to hide it, Lockwood's expression tells Lucy he was hiding something. The pair arrived at the library. Lockwood assist her in packing the necessary stuff into the bags.
'Where have you been? ' The Skull said angrily. 'Did you know what those people are going to do to me? They're calling in DEPRAC'.
'What? No! That's not gonna happen' Lucy said shakily. The Skull scoffed.
'That Mr. Bridgerton was ransacking through your stuff and accidentally found me. Luckily he's too scared to pick me up. He's the one that told the footman to lock you up. Brother's orders he said, oh yes.' The Skull explained further.
'The Viscount did that?' She said looking rather dumbfounded. 'Okay, now its personal'. Lucy scowled. 'What else did he say?'
Before the skull could answer, suddenly Lockwood took Lucy by the arm. They quickly hide behind one of the sofas. The clacking sound of high heels coming into the library was enough to make the two of their hearts racing. Lucy's eyes never left Lockwood's gaze. His hand that was on her arm before slowly moved down and held Lucy's hand tightly. How are they going to escape now?
'I know you're in here.... Please, come out. I'm not going to let them harm you. I can guarantee for your friends safety too'. Said Violet.
Violet's voice echoed throughout the library. Lucy had half the mind to confront Violet Bridgerton but the other part of her was afraid that it could be a trap. Violet began to walk around much to Lucy and Lockwood's dismay. Slowly they crawl from hiding place to another to avoid being caught by the Dowager Viscountess.
'I should've recognized it was you'. There was a slight sob coming from Violet. 'Your eyes.... they're the same as my Edmund'.
Lucy's heart pounded like crazy. Somehow, she did not want to get involve anymore in this matter of finding Francesca or to deal with the visitor itself. Enough is enough, Lucy wanted to go back to Portland Row and be with her family... her real family. To be with Lockwood, George, Holly, Kipps and even Flo. The Viscount is clearly a dangerous man and if they cannot escape, heaven knows what he'll do to Lockwood and Co.
'You're scared... ' The Skull felt her emotions. Lucy forgot to turn of his lever.
'Shut up' Lucy mouthed to the Skull.
'Duh, you're the one with the feels. I'm just here to comment on it. Don't you want to find out the truth?. He eyed on her much to her chargin.
Lockwood saw an opening path to the doorway. He then signaled to Lucy. On his command the pair made a run for it. Violet turned around and then chased after them until they reached the lobby. George and Flo got out of the living room and ran to the pair. Violet called out Lucy's name.
'Lucy dear, stop. Don't go!' Violet cried her eyes out.
Lucy stopped running. Chest heaving, She turn around facing the middle aged women. Lockwood prevent her from stopping but Lucy let go of his hand. Skull's words ringing in her ear and for once, Lucy thought to herself...
Just once...
Violet and Lucy faced each other from afar along the hallway. The tears running from Lady Bridgerton's eyes, Lucy felt the need to wipe them but her feet glued to where she stood. Suddenly, running from the stairs along came Eloise and Penelope. Kate appeared from the other side of the hallway and them stood next to them.
'I have been hoping that somewhere you'd be alive. Its been so long... and now you're here back to us, your family'. Violet sobbed. Lucy felt her body trembled at her words.
'With all due respect Lady Bridgerton... I am not who you think i am. Heck, i don't even care anymore. To be honest, I used to search for my very existence and wondered if i have a family. I know now that its not worth it'. Lucy paused. 'I'm actually happy to be where I am.... and that's with Lockwood and Co. They gave me the understanding and love i so rarely experienced but most of all, they've accepted me for who i am. You may think that i'm your long lost daughter but i can assure you i am perfectly not'.
Though her words pierced Violet's heart, she did not take it to heart for she knows Lucy have the right to feel things. Everything was new to them.
'Violet, Anthony is coming. Its best that we all take it inside the living room'. Kate gestures to the living room.
'Why did you locked us in?' Lucy glared at her. Kate tried to state her reason as civil as possible in the hopes Lucy would understand.
'I'm so sorry for that. My husband can be unreasonable sometimes but he does mean well'. Kate said. She turned to Penelope and Eloise. 'Where did you two locked Colin?'
'In the wine cellar'. Eloise's fingers dangle the set of keys out from her pocket.
'Lucy... Francesca...please'. Violet pleaded.
Everyone stayed silent despite the tension. George noticed the look on Lockwood's face when Lucy mentioned her words. His eyes darted to the floor and the to Flo. With furrowed brows she shook her head to Lockwood as a sign to shut up. George who was watching the two of them and then toward Lady Violet.
'Oh my God... its true isn't it?' George said in astonishment. 'She's her!'
The front doors opened with a bang. It startled everyone at the lobby. Three men came in and to Lucy's horror, they dragged Holly and Kipps inside. Holly held Kipps for dear life. Lucy unleashed her rapier at the ready to rescue them.
'Simon, what the hell?' Said Eloise. Then it dawned to her. 'Oh shit, he's here'.
'Let go of them!' Lockwood yelled. He was was ready to fight. Suddenly, he felt a strong tug from coming from his right then an arm locking his head. Lockwood tried to release himself from the grip. All the members of Lockwood and Co went into a state of freeze upon seeing Inspector Barnes present there. His expression was serious and he glared at Lockwood.
'Seriously, haven't i taught you lots any manners?' Lockwood's movement stopped. Barnes scoffed and then released the boy. He threw Lockwood aside. Flo and George caught him. He walked further and then facing Lucy.
'Ms. Carlyle, please put the rapier down and-
'ENOUGH!' Lucy screamed before Barnes could finish his words. There were pool of tears in her eyes.
'Lucy...' Lockwood breathed out. She eyed at him and it dawned to her he knew. 'Calm down. Listen to Inspector Barnes'.
'You knew.... Why didn't you say anything?!' She cried out. Lockwood huffed.
'We're all shocked as much as you are and believe me. We wanted to fill both you and George in along the way but things change now'. Lockwood said.
'Francesca...' Anthony appeared.
'For the last time, I amn NOT Francesca'. Lucy scowled.
Anthony's eyes fixed on Lucy. No, this is not happening, she thought. Lucy backed a little. She pointed her rapier to the front. Everyone in the hall was afraid she would do something stupid. Barnes tried to reason with her again but the more he talked the further Lucy stepped back. The green light flicked in her bag.
'Lucy... if you need to escape, i can help you with that'. Said the Skull. 'You know what you have to do'. The Skull said rather darkly. Lucy hesitated for a moment. She knew if she opened the jar there is no guarantee anyone at the hall is safe. 'I promise you I won't hurt them'.
'Promise?' Lucy voiced.
Others looked at her in confusion. Lockwood immediately knew to who she was talking to. Lucy gulped and then her eyes was on Lockwood. Whatever she was about to do, he thought... he trusted her judgement. Lucy took off her bag and held it tight against her chest with rapier still in one hand. Her gaze met with that of Lady Violet's own.
'I'm sorry...' She uttered.
Within moments Lucy pull opened the lid of the Skull's jar. The massive windy force came out of the bag sent everyone in the hall almost flying backwards Lockwood ran over to Lucy and then caught her in time before she fell to the floor due to the force. The Skull roaring freely in the air. The Bridgerton ladies screamed and quickly huddled together. Anthony and Barnes flew backwards. Their backs hit the wall. Kipps could be seen fighting with the guy named Simon. Holly manged to free herself and pushed Simon to the other side before he could punch Kipps in the face. Kipps andbHolly took each other by the hand and together they ran towards the entrance. The skull really did a number on the lobby. Many items flew up in the air and then came smashing to the floor.
'Guys, come on!' Kipps shouted. George and Flo wasted no time and made their escape. Lucy and Lockwood follow suit. Before she made it out to the door, a man caught her by the wrist.
'Oww! Lucy squealed.
'Kaz, don't let her get away'. Anthony yelled. He was running towards him. Lockwood intervenes but before he could break Kaz's grip on Lucy, Kaz grabbed his hair. Lockwood send him the same gesture. Both men gritted their teeth due to the pain.
'Oi, you've got a death wish? Take your filthly hands off my hair!' Kaz bellowed. Lockwood tried handling his own pain even though he could feel the scalp of his head about to be ripped.
'You first! I could do this all day'. Lockwood spat. Lucy grunted and then bit Kaz's hand to break free. Kaz let out a loud yell. Suddenly, Anthony appeared then lounges at Lockwood from the left side. Lucy's free hand gripped onto his hair. The three men continued wrestling each other by their hair except for Lucy.
'Bloody hell, they'll be bleeding bald if they keep puling each other's hair like that'. George exclaimed. Kipps got the engines of the car running. The Skull flew out of the entrance to aid Lucy and Lockwood. Kaz felt a sharp pain brushing along his gloved hand that gripped Lucy's wrist. Lucy hissed at the contact for she felt the slightness of the ghost touch. He immediately released Lucy who in turn kicked Anthony at his private parts. The Viscount yelled in pain and slumped onto the floor.
'Oooh, that's gotta hurt'. Said Flo squinting her eyes. Lockwood and Lucy made it to the car.
'Step on it!' Lucy shouted to Kipps.
He pressed the pedal hard and quickly the group made their way out of the estate. Before Barnes or any of the people at the hall ran after them the Skull sent their cars tumbling side to side. It then stick out its tongue to the motley crew and disappeared into the night. As the car speed away, Lucy turned her head facing the back of the car window.

[Flashback: A few hours earlier....]
As Lockwood poured himself a spot of tea, Holly and Edwina arrived. Holly greeted Flo as soon as she saw her. Lockwood invited Flo to join them for lunch. Flo was not going to say no to good food so she accepted his offer.
'This Eustace Brown you say, how old was he when he died?' Kipps asked.
'Around 24 years old'. Said, Edwina.
'So it was his death glow we saw in the master bedroom. What I'm puzzled about is whose death glow the second one belonged to?' Lockwood put in a thought.
With the help of Mrs. Wilson, Holly requested one clean cloth to be put on the table as a makeshift thinking cloth. Based on George's research and findings the other night, Lockwood rounded up the number of people who died within the mansion.
'And that's a total of five deaths'. Kipps said.
'Not quite'. Holly added another name.
'My sister...' Gregory voiced low. Holly nodded.
'It's only a theory, Gregory'. Lockwood calmed him. 'Don't be upset. As far as I'm concerned, she seems to be the odd one out in this whole mess'.
'Wait, there's one more'. Gregory said to them.
'Who?' Edwina asked. Gregory wrote the name he heard during the time he tapped into the psychic hum from the teddy bear.
'Harisson's wife?' Kipps said with a nod.
'I bet you anything she's could also be a suspect.' Gregory said.
'Well, hopefully, George can crack it for us'. Lockwood said.
The team analyzed the names and their findings written on the thinking cloth. Mrs. Wilson came into the dining room and bought the members more tea when all of a sudden Lockwood called out to her.
'Mrs. Wilson, I need to ask you something if it's okay. He said. 'Are you familiar with a person named Mr. Harrison?' Lockwood questioned. Mrs. Wilson's face tensed at the mention of the name.
'Harrison?' She said. At first, Mrs. Wilson was reluctant to say anything but Gregory persuaded her to help them for her knowledge might help to uncover the truth.
'Well, he was the previous caretaker of this place'. Mrs. Wilson said. 'I don't particularly like him. The previous head maid of this inn used to complain to me about his behavior'. Said Mrs. Wilson. 'Between you and me, to some, he was quite the womanizer'. She told them. Holly and Kipps cringed at the thought.
'Is he married?' Lockwood asked. Mrs. Wilson nodded in reply.
She explained that Mr. Harrison was a man that had his way with women. His marriage and family were of a different kind of privacy he wish to keep tight. They of course lived on the other side of England.
'So it was something he doesn't want people to know then. His wife must've found out about the affair and probably confronted Ms. Bunting'. Said Holly.
'That's enough to be motive of murder'. Gregory said. Kipps nodded.
'Do you know where they are right now Mrs. Wilson? The Harrison'. Lockwood asked.
'I don't think you'll be able to meet him even if you tried'. She said. Lockwood let out a confused look. 'One of our staff met his wife a few years ago. He was on holiday. Turns out Mr. Harrison died. He fell off the train tracks during work or so I heard. His wife was left alone to care for their children. She said.
'I see...' Edwina said. She thought the man probably deserved it after what he had done. Mrs. Wilson made a face. She looked like she tried to remember something.
'Funny though... our gardener said the Harrison don't go by that surname anymore. Probably the wife remarried. Can't remember what it was. It happened many years ago.
Lockwood nodded in understanding. He needed George and Lucy to return as there was much for them to tell and he could use George's expertise to investigate further. Their little meeting was interrupted by the figure of someone storming into the dining room. Anthony's eyes searched desperately for Lucy. Gregory stood up from his seat.
'Brother, when did you arrive?' Gregory said.
'Where is she?' He asked. Gregory frowned. He did not know what his brother meant. The others stayed silent.
'Who?' Gregory replied. Anthony paced around the doorways.
'Lucy'. He said. 'Lucy Carlyle'.
'She's with George at Aubrey Hall'. Lockwood answered. Anthony stopped and turn to face him. All of a sudden he grabbed Lockwood by the collar shocking everyone in the room.
'Anthony!' Mrs. Wilson cried out. 'What are you doing?'
'Whoa, hey!' Kipps moved nearer trying to stop him. Holly and Edwina were too shocked to move.
'What the hell?' Lockwood gripped Anthony's hands to break free from his grasp. Anthony's eyes flared at the thought of his sister with the young man in front of him. How long have the two been together he did not care. The thought of Lockwood embracing Lucy was enough to make him want to punch his face.
'Anthony that's enough'. A loud voice echoed throughout the room. Simon took the liberty to separate both men. Kipps and Holly held on to Lockwood. Anthony let out a huff.
'Could someone please explain what the hell is going on?' Edwina said rather angrily.
'Mr. Lockwood, I must ask. How long have you known Ms. Carlyle?' Anthony asked. Lockwood did not say anything due to the confusion. 'Answer me!'
'Four years. What's it to you?' It was Lockwood's turn to voice out. The Viscount was getting on his nerves.
'You kept her from my family that long? I should have you burn for that!' Anthony yelled.
He sprang to his feet ready to punch Lockwood in the face but was held back by Simon. Lockwood and Kipps took a few steps back. They were surprised by the Viscount's behavior and let alone why he acted the way he is.
'Easy there Anthony. Judging by their faces, I don't think any of her colleagues know anything. Gregory, get your brother out of here.
'Simon!' Anthony said in disbelief.
'I mean it. You being a dickhead doesn't do anything good. Now GO!' Simon command.
Anthony fixed his suit and walked out of the room with his eyes glaring at the members of Lockwood and Co. Everyone turned their heads and looked at Simon.
'With all due respect sir, why is the Viscount acting like that?" Lockwood demanded an explanation.
He asked Simon what Lockwood and Co had done wrong but mostly, why the Viscount was desperately searching for Lucy. Simon took a seat and took out an envelope from his bag. He gestured to Lockwood to take a look at its contents. Lockwood hesitate at first but it was Holly that beat him to it. She took the envelope and let out the contents. A few seconds later Holly let out a gasp and her eyes went wide. Lockwood took the papers in her hand and read them. Kipps and Edwina hovered behind his shoulder.
'What's the meaning of this?!' Lockwood voiced out. The young man felt his breath stop at the sight of the information on the papers.
'Why don't you tell me from the beginning how you met Ms. Carlyle....' Simon said seriously.
****
[Present Day: Post escape from Aubrey Hall....]
'Lucy... are you okay?' Lockwood said to her. 'Please, say something'.
Lucy tucked her knees against her chest. The tears in her eyes did not stop flowing down her cheeks. Kipps looked in the rearview mirror at the two of them. Lockwood and Holly had just finished explaining to George and Lucy their part of the escape from Francesca Inn.
George's expression looked like he had gone through the worst task in his life and it did not even involve facing stinky relic men. Flo continued eating the snack in her hand as she watched the drama unfold in front of her. At least this was better than any televised drama she thought.
Simon interrogated them all. The Viscount however had a different approach. He wanted to put the members of Lockwood and Co under investigation. It shocked them all to learn about Lucy's origins. Lockwood and Anthony got into a heated argument which resulted in Holly, Kipps and him being placed under house arrest. It was Edwina and Gregory that helped them to escape the inn. Gregory knew how dangerous and stupid his brother can be and he did not want to see Lockwood and Co suffer from Anthony's wrath.
After getting to know the members of Lockwood and Co, Gregory knew how dear they are to Lucy. They are her friends and comrade. He knew that Lockwood and his friends are the only ones that can help her. For the Bridgertons to barge into Lucy's life without proper introduction or her consent, both Edwina and Gregory knew only Lockwood and Co can help her to open up to the family and it was essential for the team to do so.
Gregory managed to sneak the keys from Anthony's coat and signaled to Edwina and Mrs. Wilson to help the team escape. Luckily for the team, Kipps knew how to drive. And so, after the fiasco the three of them caused at the inn and Aubrey Hall, Lockwood, and Co found themselves becoming fugitives in the dark of the night. Lucy was too quiet and it scared Lockwood. He placed his arms around her. Lucy felt nothing. Numbness surrounded her body and mind.
All her life, she resented Mrs. Carlyle for the lesser affection she gave to her but now, it sparked into something bigger and painful. In the end, she was only useful to the Carlyles due to her talent. Such a curse her talents are now. The skull, who went back again into the jar could only sigh as heard her thoughts. Sarcasm was out of order he thought. He almost felt sorry for Lucy.
'We could always sue him'. Kipps said. George snorted.
'Oh yeah, that's rich Kipps. I don't fancy facing the Viscount in court. Who knows how many lawyers he could hire to beat the crap out of us'. He said.
'Look, we now know the truth. Mr. Harrison was in fact, Mr. Carlyle all along'. Holly paused. 'Lucy, can you remember anything about him?' She asked.
Lucy slowly released herself from Lockwood's embrace and straighten herself out. He gave her a few tissues to wipe away her tears. She thanked him as she took it.
'He's a piece of shit'. Lucy said. Everyone in the car stayed silent. 'Dad wasn't the best of fathers. Drunkard and large. He often had fights with Mum. If any of us kids annoy him, he beat the crap out of us'. She said. Lockwood took her hands in his and gently squeezed them. Her time with the Carlyle family had to be a dreadful memory indeed.
'Oh, Lucy... That's horrible!' Holly said with sympathy. George shook his head at the situation that Lucy had to go through while growing up.
'Crazy fellow then'. Flo added. 'The thing you lots should put to the question isn't him'.
'Meaning?' Kipps said while focusing on the road.
'He's a womanizer is he not? God knows who else fell into his trap. No offense though Carlyle.' Flo suggested. Lucy did not reply.
'Ah, of course!' George said. 'His wife is another potential suspect. Flo, you're a genius'.'
'Lucy's mum?' Holly paused. 'Ah, ha. She must've found out about Ms. Bunting and sought to kill her then' Holly said straightforwardly
'Not quite. We still have Eustace Brown'. Lockwood said. 'George, what's your take on this?'
George looked at Lucy in which whatever he may say after might be too uncomfortable for her to hear. Sensing his thoughts, Lucy gave a nod for him to continue.
'Lover's Jealousy. Eustace probably confronted Mr. Harrison and to shut him up, he killed him. Said George.
'Ms. Bunting could also be the one that killed him too don't forget.' Said Holly.
'Hey Locky, still have that toy with you? Why don't you let Carlyle have a go at it?' Flo said. Lockwood had almost forgotten about the item. Luckily Holly kept it safe. Slowly, she gave the teddy bear to Lucy to see.
Lucy let out a small gasp. It was as if something so distant became familiar. Her eyes found that of Lockwood's own. He gave her a reassuring smile.
'Don't worry. We're here for you. He said. Lucy nodded. She took the item and tapped into the psychic connection as she closed her eyes.
The smell of hyacinth lingers through her nose and the touch of silk from her face. He heard someone laughing and at the same time whispering sweet words. The girl in front of her was beautiful and her hair was adorned with a lovely ring of daisies. She placed another one on Lucy's head.
'There. Now you too can be the diamond of the first water'.
' She smiled happily. The other little girl gave herself a twirl which earn a clap from her big sister. Laughter can be heard all around.
'It's So pretty Daphne'. Said the little girl smiling with glee.
Lucy smiled at the happiness she felt with the girl. The others kept quiet and let her concentrate.
'She's so happy...' Lucy smiled. Lockwood held her hand.
'Francesca, what did I tell you to play only in an hour?' A voice came toward the two girls. They turned to the woman. Lucy stood up.
'I'm sorry Ms. Bunting. We're having so much fun. Said Francesca. Ms. Bunting placed both hands on her hips.
'You don't want to end up becoming stupid little girls, do you? Come now, get back to your lessons. The same goes for you too Daphne'. She said rather sternly.
Both Daphne and Francesca retreated inside the house. As Daphne walked on, Ms. Bunting pulled Francesca to the other side. She bent down at the same eye level as her. The little girl blinked. She took the daisies that Daphne made for Francesca off her head.
'Frannie, beauty is only for those who are truly worthy. It doesn't suit you dearie'. Ms. Bunting said. 'How can you be the diamond of the first water if you kept on wasting your time playing silly games? Your sisters are raised to be wives, you on the other hand are special. You have the talent my dear and should be proud of it. Focus on them and soon you'll be rich and powerful like Marissa Fittes Together, we'll be stars'.
Lucy felt her stomach churn at the thought of Ms. Bunting's words slowly poisoning the child. She felt her blood boiling at the thought. She was sly and slowly tries to corrupt Francesca to become one of her puppets. The scene changes and Lucy heard another voice.
'Stay here Miss Francesca. He said. the young man patted her head. 'I'm glad you told me about it. I promise I'll get your mama's necklace back from Ms. Bunting okay?'
'Eustace, I don't like here'. Said Francesca.
'You shouldn't have followed me. Still, don't worry. It'll be quick. Now stay inside this closet okay'. Said Eustace.
Moments later, Lucy heard punching sounds and then someone being choked. Lucy placed her left hand on her mouth after hearing what left of Eustace breath left his body. The scene changes and then she felt Francesca running for dear life at the sound of another person coming from behind.
'Come here you little rascal!' said the voice. Lucy suddenly then let out a loud shriek. Her hands held onto Lockwood hard as her body began to tremble. She knew to whom the voice belongs. That voice... Lucy thought. Why did it give her jitters? The scary feeling she once felt at the sound of Mrs. Carlyle's voice made her tremble. Slowly, Lucy began panting. The screams of Francesca ringing in her ears sounded exactly like her own.
'Lucy?' Lockwood called out. She did not hear him. Kipps then pulled to the other side of the road. He turned around facing them.
'Please.. don't kill me!' She spoke. Tears started to gather from her closed eyes. Holly and Kipps looked at each other and then at Lucy. Both their faces looked worried as their listener friend delved deeper into the voices from the past.
'Did you manage to snatch the diamond from Bunting?' She should be dead and, not to mention this rascal has seen too much. Said, Mrs. Carlyle.
'Relax, I've dealt with them'. Mr. Carlyle paused. He saw the little girl's eyes opening. 'Oh, awake are we?' Mr. Carlyle said. 'Well, why don't we take a little swim?'
Something in her mind clicked when she heard him say that. Memories crept into her mind and visions of both her parent's faces appeared in front of her. More to say, Mr. and Mrs. Carlyle drag her to the river.
'No, please stop. No!' Lucy sobbed harder. Lockwood placed both his hands on her arms trying to wake her.
'Lucy, Lucy wake up!'. Lockwood shook her body Lucy however did not listen to him. Holly and George called out her name as well.
She screamed after she felt a smack coming from the back of her head. Lucy almost fell from where she sat. The face in front of her started to become blurry. Mrs. Carlyle watched the little girl in front of her grovel and heave a sigh. Lucy pleaded for help. She felt her body weakened and her head throbbing with pain.
'She's a listener you say?' Mrs. Carlyle asked.
'Bunting herself said so. Pity she must die. Well, If we keep her she'll make us more money than what we earned'. Replied Mr. Carlyle. He grabbed the little girl by her neck. Lucy felt herself suffocating. Her little hands were too weak to move. She finally remembers. The trauma and the need to forget everything she felt, little Lucy suppressed from her mind. Slowly, her visions began to blur and then, drifted in total darkness.
'Stop...' Mrs. Carlyle said. Her husband frowned. Something else appeared in her eyes which led to a very wicked smile.
'Lucy!' Lockwood's voice awoke her from the horrible visions. Sweats formed on her forehead. She tried catching her breath. Holly could be seen opening a water bottle that belonged to the Viscount and passing it to her to drink. Lockwood cupped her face in his hands. Lucy's eyes met his own. She broke into a sob. Lockwood opened the door and took Lucy out of the car. He brought her to the further front. He did not care if the others looked, he held Lucy in his arms and comforted her. Lucy did not know how long she hold on to Lockwood as she cried her eyes out. The rest of the team stayed silent and decided to let the two of them be alone.
'This might take a while. Is anyone hungry? I've got treats'. Flo said. She waved the bar of chocolate in her hand. George's mouth gaped.
'Where did you get those?' George asked. He took a piece from her hand and then began eating.
'Perks of sitting at the back seat. You'll never know what you'll find'. Flo grinned. She took the gift basket from the back seat and shared the snacks with the others.
'Oh, there's a card here'. Holly said. Her eyes widened at the name of the owner. 'Well, i hope Queen Charlotte wouldn't mind if we eat them'. She tried to laugh it off.
George and Kipps stopped chewing.
***
Lucy stood still as she looked to her front where the long and dark road lies ahead. Lockwood hated the fact he could not do anything to make her feel better. He wanted to see her smile again. Lucy being sad does nothing to settle his nerves. He needed her to focus and stay calm. When he thought his life was worthless, here, the girl who never stopped being there for him... She looks so vulnerable and broken.
'They were monsters... all of them'. Lucy said in a low voice that only Lockwood could hear. The tears in her eyes have not dried out yet. ' wiped the tears away with his thumbs.
'They killed Eustace and I'm the reason both he and Ms. Bunting died'. Lucy cried.
'No, Lucy listen. You are not in the wrong'. Lockwood said to her. 'Those people, they are the ones who should be blamed. They let their greed and jealousy take over their hearts. Innocent life like yours and Eustace Brown became the victims of their silly drama'.
She cried at the thought of the young man who died for her sake. Lockwood saw that Lucy had more things to say but could not find the right words. Her mind was a mess. Lockwood tried his best to comfort Lucy in any way possible.
'Do you remember me telling you that I once woke up at the hospital when I was young?' Lucy sniffed. Lockwood recalled and nodded. 'The doctor said to mum that I suffered from amnesia'. Lucy turned her head to face him. From her eyes, Lockwood knew Lucy was not the same after all that has happened until now.
'That little girl...Francesca. I- I think I just wanted to forget the pain I felt back then. Heck, dead even seems to be a better option. Lucy cried thinking about her younger self. 'I guess I got my wish and suffering from memory loss certainly made everything less hurtful. Never thought that the people who adopted me turned out to be the real culprits'.
Lockwood held her hands tighter upon hearing Lucy's confession. To be living in a complete lie was too much for a girl like her to handle but he was glad she made it through. He felt his blood boil just thinking about what the Carlyle couple did to his beloved over the years. She deserved so much better.
'Sometimes, I prayed they would give an ounce of care or loved me even but now I know why they act like that toward me. My parents were nothing but a bunch of liars and my sisters...' Lucy let out a huff. 'Oh gosh, my sisters. I think none of them knew what our parents did. Mum and Dad might hide the secret pretty well. Sometimes, I wished my life was different but that all changed after I...' She paused. Lockwood frowned. Lucy bit her lower lip trying to shove her feelings aside but it was futile.
'After what Luce?' Somehow he was afraid of her answer but needed to know her heart.
'After I joined Lockwood and Co... and I met you'. She sighs. Lockwood held her close. His hand was on her hips.
'I'm glad you feel that way.' He chuckled. 'That's one way we can positively look at the current present'. Both of them let out a light laugh at the thought.
'I guess...' Lucy slowly smiled.
'Do you remember anything else?' Lockwood questioned. Lucy tried recalling her memories but the throbbing she felt in her head got the best of her.
'Just fragments. Lord Bridgerton and Lady Violet's faces, they're a bit clearer now. I remember them better now. Lucy answered. Lockwood let out a small smile.
'That's good... considering that they're your real family'. Lockwood said but the tone of his voice betrayed him. Somehow, Lucy dread at the thought of being with them. They were strangers to her as much as she to them. Will they be able to accept her? Will she be good enough for them or they to her? After what they experienced today, the Viscount wanted his sister back, not her. She was no Francesca Bridgerton but Lucy Carlyle and to have her going over to their family somehow she felt her heart clenching. As if he could read her mind Lockwood held her close.
'No matter what you choose Lucy, you have my support and everyone at Lockwood and Co'. He said.
'I don't need anybody else, Anthony'. She spoke and said his first name. Lucy would only use it when they are alone together. 'Lockwood and Co is my family... You're my world'.
Lucy wiped a tear streaming down from her cheek. How far they have come until this moment, She would not trade it any other way. Lockwood felt his breath stop for a moment when she spoke those words. For Lucy to consider him as her world and family oh how he wanted to let her know he too felt the same. Lockwood gave a reassuring smile and held her close. Lucy saw the glint in Lockwood's eyes and she knows, everything will be alright.
Without a moment to spare, Lockwood leaned in closer until his lips touches Lucy's own. Their kiss was filled with passion and hope. The connection they had was nothing compared to the average couple. He loved her and she loved him. Lucy wanted to be by Lockwood's side always. To hell with everything and everyone. he both of them could just run away together to the ends of the world and elope if that will stop Anthony and the Bridgerton family from taking her away from Lockwood and her friends. Maybe Flo know some people or any relic man who would agree to officiate a wedding ceremony on short notice, Lucy thought. The sudden sound of the endless honking from the stolen car startled the pair. They broke from the kiss and both heads turned to their left.
'Oi, some people rather see herons in the dark. Get a room if you're gonna be touchy feely'. George said rather loudly. That earned a whistle and wink from Flo. Nonetheless, Lockwood felt happy that Lucy was starting to feel okay.
'Don't mind me honking. I'm just stopping you guys from giving us nightmares if you two decide to do something more than kissing out here'. Kipps added.
'Oh my god, Quill. Hahahaha'. Holly was laughing her heart out at his words. Kipps joined in.
'Damn, i forgot we have company'. Lockwood buried his face in Lucy's neck. He started to giggle in her embrace.
Lucy laughed much to her embarrassment. She then hid her face in the palm of her hands while facing the other way. Lockwood smiled and pull her back in his arms. Together the two walk back into the car. Kipps continues driving on the road once more.
'There's something that bothers me though'. Holly said. 'The nanny that died. What's her connection in this?' George cleared his throat and flipped the pages of his notebook.
'I think she found something in the hidden room. My best bet is that she found the ghost's source'. George replied. Lucy's head shoots up.
'Of course...' Lucy snapped. The others turned to her. Her face went to a serious look.
'The necklace, that's her source. Diana must've found and kept the item!' Lucy concluded.
'I agree with you Lucy on that part. Hence, the ghost of Ms. Bunting came after her. She did help the two maids to clean the hidden room'. Said George. 'Lucy, do you remember anything about Ms. Bunting and how she usually fashions herself?'
Lucy recalled a vague memory she had of Ms. Bunting. Back then she was looking for her brothers. A the corner of her eye, Lucy accidentally saw Ms. Bunting going into her parent's room. It puzzled her so she went to see what Ms. Bunting was up to.
'Only bits of pieces. I did remember I caught her opening some box. She saw me at the door and pulled me inside'. Lucy recalled. Somehow she did not have the heart to say the next part.
'It's okay Luce. One at a time, when you're ready.' Lockwood said.
'She must've known I saw her took something. I remember she threatened me by saying if I tell my parents, everyone will think I'm a liar and everyone will hate me'. Lucy said. Her face looked sad. Lockwood and George exchange gazes and then to Lucy.
'That's horrid. How can someone like her do that to children? She's such a manipulative woman.' Holly said angrily.
'This necklace, how much of a bad vibe does it carry?' Flo suddenly asked. She has been silent throughout the whole ride. Flo pursed her lips as if contemplating whether or not she should say anything.
'Why do you ask?' Lucy questioned. Flo scratched her nose. 'Look, love, I don't mean to say this now but I heard rumors from the underground a couple of days ago that someone tipped about a woman being ghost touched in a wealthy haunted mansion. I reckon it's the very same Diana you're talking about. If it's true, then some relic people are gonna do some damage tonight'. She said. Lockwood turned around facing her.
'Ooohhh..... So that's why you're here. You're looking for the necklace too.' He said. Flo scoffed.
'I wouldn't deny it Locky but circumstances have changed now that I'm stuck with you lots'. Flo said. 'They're probably on their way there now'.
'We have to go back....' Lucy voiced. 'Kipps, turn the car around and get us back to Brunswick Mansion'. Everyone was surprised by her words. Holly and George's expression was as if someone dropped a bomb on the roof of 35 portland row.
'Are you out of your mind?' George suddenly panicked. 'It's a suicide, Lucy. Not to mention we don't have enough resources let alone half of our equipment'.
'In case you haven't lost all your memory yet Lucy, you said so yourself her ghost is a type three'. Kipps agreed with George. This was a bad enough idea. 'We can't compete with that'.
'The Skull. He can help us'. She Said. Upon the mention of his name, the jar next to her formed itself. He smirked.
'I don't mind getting in the danger. We should do this often'. He said.
Lucy urged the crew to go back to the mansion. If they cannot secure the source, other relic hunters will try to steal it. Not to mention Leopold has now taken over the auction business from his late father Julius Winkman. If the source falls into his hands, only God knows what the nasty little boy might do.
'Securing the source is our only option now. I don't fancy sneaking into the Winkman's warehouse to get it'. Lucy told them.
'Luce, it's too dangerous and your memory is still recovering'. Lockwood said rather worriedly.
'Lockwood, I'm fine. Really. I don't want to run away anymore'. Lucy determined.
'No, you're not. Are you even ready to face Ms. Bunting?' Lockwood spoke. There was truth in what he said as going back meant she has to face the ghost. Luckily, she has the Skull with her this time.
'Positive. I want to go there and finish the job. Lucy said firmly. Lockwood's head tilted down and then up again as he sigh.
'I'm game if you want to Carlyle'. Flo said. George could not believe she agreed to go with Lucy.
'I can't let you go there Luce. George is right. We don't have enough help to take on this job let alone we'll be putting our team's life at risk'.
'That's highly unlikely'. Kipps said. The others turned to him.
'Oh, why so?' Holly asked. She wondered what he has in mind. Kipps smiled.
He turned the car around and then drove to the nearest phone booth. He asked Lockwood to come with him. Everyone watched the two exchange a few words. Kipps then talked on the phone before handing it to Lockwood. Lucy wondered who were they talking on the phone. The smile on Lockwood's face indicates that the two young men were planning something. It is not always one gets to see Kipps and Lockwood agreeing with one another but for Lucy, she was glad the two sorted out their differences. It was still a long way for them but working as a team, at least Lucy hoped everyone stayed in one piece. A moment later, Kipps and Lockwood went back into the car. The excitement in Lockwood's eye scared George.
'Oh shit, don't tell me we're going to Brunswick Mansion'. He exclaimed.
'Yes! Yes we are George. This time we're not doing it alone. They'll meet us there shortly.' Lockwood said.
'Who's they?' Lucy asked.
'The help'. His mouth formed into a grin. Adrenaline on high. George shook his head.
'If we live through this, the Viscount better pay us a big fat check. Plus, I want weekend access to Aubrey Hall Library'. Said George.
Lucy nodded to Lockwood and the two held hands. Kipps positioned the steering wheel and then turned the other way. The motley fugitive crew drove to their destination where danger started to unfold.
Chapter 8: The Battle at Brunswick Mansion
Summary:
'You will die today' She spoke. Her vengeful eyes fixed upon Lucy and then turned to the one person Lucy dreaded she noticed. "I'll take your precious boyfriend first. I will enjoy watching you suffer'.
'No! Don't!" Lucy got up to her feet.' Take me. Take me instead. It's me the one you want to kill right. Let him be". Lucy begged.
'Oh how sweet... But not convincing enough Frannie. You've always been a thorn. Special but never beautiful enough'. Ms Bunting said.
'I will have my revenge on you Francesca Bridgerton and I will enjoy every bit of the moment as you watch them all die'. She said. Her hands up in the air ready to inflict pain on all the living souls in the house.
Notes:
Hey guys...
Wow. Its been quite a while since the last time I wrote something. I've been very, very busy and real life problems that have gotten more complex. First of all, I am sorry that it took this long to update the fic. I have pressing life responsibility that I need to focus more on. I love writing so much but lately I feel the joy and creativity is fading due to life problems that I have to endure and it made me questioned myself to choose the right path of which doing the writing that I love so much or to focus on the other field that I am currently on. Anyhow, I started this fic and I'm determined to see the story finish. Not because of getting likes or anything but because I love writing good stories for everyone to enjoy and learn. Dear readers, we have come to the last three chapters. I thank you for your support and love for this fan fic of mine. It really means a lot to me.
Anyway, here is the latest update and I hope you guys enjoy reading it as much as I have fun writing them.
Till then dear readers.
Chapter Text
'I'm feeling cold already'. George grumbled. He placed both hands in his pockets.
Kipps parked the car a little further from Brunswick Mansion. All six of them quietly crept their way towards the mansion. By the time they arrived, Lucy noticed the lock of the main gate has been tampered. There was definitely people present inside. Suddenly, they heard footsteps coming. Lockwood saw two figures coming from the other side of the road.
'Oh, good they made it'. He said with relief. Edwina and Gregory came to their aid much to the team's delight.
With the help from Mrs. Wilson, Edwina and Gregory manage to snuck out of the inn. It was not easy since her brother in law kept everyone under house arrest. The team of Lockwood and Co thanked Edwina and Gregory for helping them. Lucy's eyes met that of Gregory's own. The last time they met, they were strangers but now, since the information of her sharing the same blood as he, it made the meeting a little bit awkward. Gregory looked at Lucy as if he was having trouble deciding what to make of her. He reminded himself that he was looking at his sister, not some mere agent. Lockwood cleared his throat.
'Right, here's the plan. We'll split into groups'. He instructed. 'George you take Flo, Edwina and Holly and locate the source at the eastern wing. Lucy, Gregory, Kipps and I will cover the west wing'.
'Will do'. George nodded. He was ready as ever.
'Remember, any sign of sound or movement, you retreat to the nearest circle and prepare to fight. We're not only dealing with the dead but also the living. Best hope we don't come across with any relic men while searching for the source'. Lockwood said seriously.
'Lucy, where was the last you felt the visitor's presence?' Edwina asked.
'At the staircase. Its near to the master's bedroom'. Lucy replied. The greenish glow from her bag pack started to talk.
' You might want to wrap things quick because someone is coming'. The Skull warned. Lucy alerted the team of what the skull told her. Everyone ran through the gates and hid at the nearest bush. Lucy could hear their conversation.
'Valuable or not, i ain't venturing in there another second. Did you see what happened to Larry?' The relic man panted hard. He wiped his brows using his sleeve. 'The ghost got him!'
Holly shuddered upon hearing about the chaos ensued inside Brunswick Mansion. Suddenly they all heard a loud banging coming from inside the mansion. The windows shook and it felt as if the ground they stood was shaking. That alone was enough to make the two relic man running for their lives.
'We've got to seal the source before more damage is done to the house and the people stuck in there'. Lucy said.
'Although i don't fancy the idea of saving those relic hunters but you're right'. Kipps sighed.
'Alright everyone, let's catch this ghost'. Lockwood said. The whole crew made their way to the front door, or what was left of it.
'Oh God. These carvings existed since the 19th century. Bloody relic hunters'. Gregory gasped while looking at the half broken pieces of the door scattered on the floor. George shared the young boy's anger.
'Guys... look'. Lucy pointed.
There were at least six dead bodies scattered all over the hallway. Mostly died from ghost lock. Holly, George and Edwina immediately made a circle at the center of the main entrance. Kipps and Lockwood covered the bodies using silver nets. Lucy felt the presence of the dead and they are growing. Lucy released the skull from the Jar.
'We've got company. Get in the circle!' Lucy yelled.
Everyone took out their rapiers and did as they are told. something came flying from the west wing. It was not Mr. Bunting but a newly murdered ghost of a relic man. Lockwood threw salt bombs to keep them away. Suddenly, the ghost disappeared after a greenish blob of light attacked it. With a loud puff, the ghost was gone. Lucy blinked. Edwina and Holly quickly covered the remaining dead bodies on the floor with solver nets.
'I haven't had this much fun since the battle at Marissa Fittes's house blasted herself off'. The skull cracked a laugh. ' Well, get a move on. The ghost already knows you're here'.
'Lucy, we need to find the source quickly. I don't think Mrs. Wilson pack enough silver nets to cover the bodies'. Edwina said worriedly.
'C'mon, Its this way'. Lucy pointed. 'Its faint one but i can hear them'.
They quickly carry out the plan. Lucy turned her head over her shoulder only to find Lockwood speaking to Gregory. The boy's expression looked horrified but he did not say anything. After that, they head
'What's wrong?' Lucy asked. Ahead of them, Kipps made a quick circle.
'It's nothing'. Lockwood reassured her.
Kipps turned his head both sideways at the junction. He wanted to make sure that the both hallways of the east and west wing are clear of visitors and of any human beings.
'All clear... Let's go'. Kipps gestured. The team split from there on. Holly gave a nod and lightly squeezed Lucy's hand.
'Be safe, all of you'. Holly said.
'You too Hol'. Lucy answered. Her heart hammering. They smile to each other.
Long gone is the rivalry and insecure Lucy once felt for the girl in front of her. Bow, all she wanted after all of this is over was to see all her friends and colleagues safe return. Lucy followed Lockwood and the others to the east wing. The coldness of the surroundings made Lucy terrified knowing the ghost of Ms. Bunting can come up to them from anywhere. Lockwood sensing her distress held their hand together as they ran. Lucy dreaded at the thought of Lockwood being taken by Ms. Bunting. No! Silly girl, they will make it out alive. She will burn the whole house to the ground if she has to.
'Ooo... the room on your right. There's a strong presence in there'. The Skull said. Lucy halted in which made the others stopped running as well.
'Lucy... what is it?' Lockwood voiced.
'I hear something..' Lucy whispered.
'What room is this?' Lockwood asked Gregory. Gregory.
'Its the master bedroom. It used to belong to my parents'. Said Gregory. Lucy froze at the words. Inside here, all the answers are tucked in.
Gregory opened the door. Cold wind brush pass their faces. The view of the room is nothing like she had imagined. The four poster bed was the only thing that stood out not because it looked beautiful but it was tainted by another dead body. Lockwood quickly covered it with a silver net.
'You shouldn't be here... ' A shrill echo made Lucy almost jump. she took out her rapier. Lockwood and Gregory did the same. Kipps adjusted his goggles and found something he did not expect.
'Lucy, think I found our dead guy'. Said Kipps.
'Eustace Brown.... Eustace, Is it you? ' Lucy spoke.
A tiny bright ball of light slowly emerges. Lockwood and Gregory stood in front of me. The ghost manifest itself in front of us. Lucy saw the traces of blood around his neck. God, they tortured him, she thought.
'Little miss... she knows' It said.
'Eustace, where is her source?' Lucy asked desperately. The ghost hovered slightly and then disappear much to their horror.
'Where did he go?' Kipps said. He looked around the room.
'Lucy, what did it said to you just now?' Lockwood asked.
Lucy could not find the words as she focused on calling the ghost of Eustace Brown once more. Lucy called out his name a few more times. The others waited.
'Lucy, let's go. the longer we-' Lockwood's words was held short.
'There! by the door'. Gregory pointed. They turned their gaze toward the entrance.
' Go to him. He knows where the source is. ' Said the Skull.
'C'mon, I think we're close.' Said Lucy.
'Lucy wait. What if its a trap?' Kipps said. He feared that they are putting their trust wrongly on a ghost.
'We'll take the risk' Lockwood answered. He walked to the door and the others followed suit.
The four of them ran out of the room and follow the ball light. Lucy's heart leapt when she heard a scream. The stopped and Lockwood immediately held Lucy close to him. Kipps noted that it was probably another relic hunter being ghost touched.
'The sooner we find the source the better. This house has enough ghost as it is'. Gregory said. Kipps took out the chains from his bag and prepared another circle.'I don't fancy being ghost touched'.
'Get down!'Lockwood said. A ghost flew passed above them and stopped. His eyes met Gregory's own much to the boys horror. The four stayed quiet and did not make any noise. The skull came to their rescue. Kipps and Lockwood started throwing salt bombs at it.
'Damn, its another relic hunter!' Kipps swing his rapier towards it.
Lucy saw the ball of light going further until it reached the end of the corridor. Lucy saw the old looking door. The ball of light went straight inside. With the ghosts of relic hunters attacking them it was impossible for Lucy and the team to keep up with Eustace. Lucy made the decision. She knows what she has to do so she turned toward Lockwood.
'I'm sorry....' Lucy said. She made a dash out of the circle and chase after the ball of light.
'Lucy no, stop!' Lockwood yelled. The skull followed her from behind. Lucy quickly ran without looking at the back. Lockwood, Gregory and Kipps continued fighting the ghost before it can go after Lucy.
Before Lucy can reach to the handle, it burst opened. She stopped in her tracks. The room was pitch black and she cannot see anything beyond. There were many voices tonight coming from the living and the dead altogether. Lucy held her rapier close. Lockwood called out to her frantically. She and the Skull went inside.
'No, no, no. Lucy!' Lockwood ran to reach her. Suddenly, the door slammed shut. Kipps and Gregory managed to ward off the other ghosts. They ran toward Lockwood. He tried to opened the door but it was sealed shut.
'Oh God! LUCYYYY!!!' Lockwood banged the door several times.'Kipps, get me the crowbar. We're breaking this door.'
Lucy tried to open the door from the inside. The Skull hovering around was trying to make sense of the room. She could hear Lockwood's voice on the other side.
'Lockwood!' She said.
'Lucy, you've got company' The Skull warned her. Lucy stopped and look to her front. She felt her heart beats fast.
The ticking sound coming from the room added her uneasiness. She could hear Lockwood and the others trying to barge in. Slowly, the ball of light began to emerge. With her rapier at the ready, Lucy stood against the door. Oh why does she have to act rashly today? She regret her decision before but it was inevitable that they do not lose Eustace Brown. What if this was a trap?
The ghost of the young man appeared before her. She held her breath and saw the manifestation of Eustace Brown. The coldness of the room intensifies and Lucy could feel a chill running down her spine.
'Please, show me where her source is'. Lucy whisper. The ghost did not speak nor did it avert his gaze from hers. Lucy felt something slowly pulling her conscious out of focus. She felt trapped and her body froze. Oh no!
'Please... let me go!' Lucy said. She felt herself suffocating and cannot breath. Lucy fell onto the floor and held her chest tight. Suddenly, everything around her went black.
[Flashback]
'Little miss... you have to stay in here. Do not go anywhere. I will come back for you.' Said Eustace.
'Eustace, i'm afraid mummy will be angry. I want the necklace back. I shouldn't have given it to nanny'. Said little Francesca.
'I know little miss, i know. I will help you but just stay where you are okay?' He reassured her. Francesca nodded.,
'Where did they ran off to? Said a voice along the corridor. 'Come out you lots!'
Eustace closed the cupboard and slowly walked toward the door. He pressed his ears against it to hear whether the footsteps have gone. Whatever happens, he needed to get the little miss to safety and steal back the necklace from Mr. Harrison and Ms. Bunting.
All this time, he has been a fool for loving Ms. Bunting but he never realized that Mr. Harrison and her had already begun an affair. He wanted them to pay for their sins and sought to confront Mrs. Bunting about the necklace she stole from the Vicountess Bridgerton.
The door suddenly burst opened which resulting to Eustace falling backwards onto the floor. Mr. Harrison caught him by surprise. Eustace was not built like the man in front of him but he will not go down without a fight. The two men taught hard but it was proven that Mr. Harrison was more capable in combat. He managed to knocked Eustace off his feet and kicked his chest hard repeatedly. Eustace felt his chest hardened and it was getting harder to breath. He took another blow but managed to grab Mr. Harrison's foot and knock him off. The two struggled on the floor for dominance. Young Francesca watched the whole fight in horror. She wanted to get out and call for help. Mr. Harrison placed both his hands around Eustace's neck. The boy struggled to break free but slowly his face turned blue.
'Curse... You'. Eustace croaked. Slowly his limbs fell and then he became no more than a souless corpse. Mr. Harrison panted and kicked the dead body aside. His breath fastened and then he got out of the room.
The little girl's head tried to make sense of what happened before. Her body shook with fear. Eustace who spoke to her a few minutes ago, was dead. She needed to escape. The longer she stayed here, the dangerous it gets. She could feel her hands trembling. Francesca slowly walked out of the cupboard. She glanced from side to side fearing if Mr. Harrison could show up at any moment. As she crept out of the room. Francesca heard voices coming from a nearby room.
'You killed him? Well, he wasn't at all useful anyway. That aside, what are we to do with your wife?' Mrs. Bunting said.
'She'll be fine. I get to be with you after all' He pulled her close.
'Naughty.. I like it.' Ms. Bunting said and licked her upper lip. Soon the two retreated onto the vacant bed. The noises she heard next made her uncomfortable. Ms Bunting and Mr. Harrison was not being subtle about it either.
While the affair happened, she thought about where could they hide her mother's necklace. Her eyes fell onto the black luggage at the end of the corridor. She bet her chances and quietly tip toed over to it. Relief washed over her when she found a jewelry box hidden among Ms. Bunting's wardrobe. Slowly she opened it. The glittering jewel necklace was inches in front of her. She quickly took the item and placed it in her pocket. The front door of the house opened. Francesca jolted and made a run for it. She quickly hid behind the curtains. The sound of the footsteps coming up the stairs made her heart beating uncontrollably fast.
'No! You cannot do this? We had a deal. I'm the only woman remember?' A booming voice coming from inside the room startled her. Loud screams and struggling echoed the halls.
'Choke on this you cunning fox'. Another woman's voice could be heard from the room. The scared little girl need to make a run for it. This was her only chance to do so.
Suddenly, everything went quiet. Her trembling body cannot take it anymore so Francesca made a run for it and ran toward the staircase
'AAAAAHHHHH!' Francesca screamed when she saw the figure of Mr. Harrison appearing there. How did he got there so fast? The other woman who was pulling what happens to be a dead body of Ms. Bunting dropped it immediately.
'Going somewhere love? Naughty girls must be getting a good beating. Did you stole something in that bag? Give it up.' Mr. Harrison spoke.
The little girl turned around and ran for dear life. She hid herself in the music room. Francesca locked the doors and hid under the bed. She was truly trapped. Tears rolled from her eyes. Oh why did she had to come? The death of Eustace Brown was all her fault. The faces of her parents played in her eyes. She wanted to be saved by them so badly. She hid herself under the bed.
'Mamma, papa...' Francesca sniffed. The locked door continued being budged. It frightened her to no end. Francesca saw a loose floorboard from where she lay. Quickly she hid the item inside. If he searched her, they will not find a trace of the necklace there. She can plan her escape once the opportunity comes. The door burst opened and in came Mr. Harrison. The loud scream of his voice was the one thing that made little Francesca almost died from fear.
[End Flashback]
'Lucy!' Lockwood screamed her name. She felt a sting coming from the left side of her cheek.
'An..Anthony'. Tears welled up her eyes. She was back in reality. Lockwood hugged her. He could feel Lucy's body trembling. Lucy sobbed hard and place her arms around him. Gregory and Kipps threw salt bombs at the ghost. Immediately it disappear.
'God, you okay?' Kipps said looking alarmed. 'That thing almost got you'.
'I.. I know where the source is'. She said. Everyone in the room froze.
'Then let's finish this job. Once and for all'. Gregory said. The nightmare this whole case made his feelings all too exhausted. He wanted everything to end.
He stuck out his hand for Lucy to hold. His eyes filled with sadness but there was hope still. The young boy knew that nothing can change the past but now that Lucy... No, his sister Francesca is here... Gregory wanted to set the record straight.
'Better make it fast. I can see something coming'. Kipps warned. Lucy took Gregory's hand. She was up on her feet again but only this time, sandwiched between Lockwood and Gregory. The two men protected her from harm.
'Its here, the third one near the corridor. That's where I hid it...' Lucy said. Both boys turned to her.
'We'll cover you'. Lockwood nodded.
Suddenly, a loud bang was heard along the corridor. The four of them got out of the room only to be greeted by a sight of their comrades being targeted by four relic men ghosts. George threw two more sparks in order to distract them. Flo helped him to aim better. Holly and Edwina saw the others.
'We found more bodies but there weren't enough iron cloth to cover them all up. We ran here after securing the chains around the west hall doorway.' Edwina told them.
'Good job'. Lockwood praised.
'Anthony, its over there'. Lucy pointed out. The connection she felt grew stronger. Lucy quickly ran toward the room where Francesca once hide. All of a sudden, a tiny ball appeared out of no where. Slowly it took form and from there, Lucy's worst fear heighten.
The face of the woman who caused so much misery to her emerges. Her fiery eyes looking straight at Lucy was enough to make that little girl in her tremble. Lucy felt someone clutching her left hand tight. Lockwood was beside her and so did the others.
'My, my... I thought by now you should have learned your mistakes. But, I guess was wrong'. Said Ms. Bunting's in a whispery voice.
'You stole what belongs to Lady Violet. If there was anyone else to be blamed let that be your killer's. Lucy spat. She had enough of Ms. Bunting's threat.
'Oh, is this what I think it looks like? Little Franny talking back?' She laughed. The others cannot hear what the ghostly woman said but they perfectly well know that she hit Lucy's nerve. Lucy held out her sword to the front. Ms. Bunting saw this and sneered. Fool! As if you can outrun me. You will all die today! I'll save you for last Frannie dear and oh how I will enjoy spending eternity tormenting you'. She screeched.
'Not in a million lifetime. Now Kipps!' Lucy alerted. With that, Kipps released the ghost of the Skull from its Jar. The blast coming out from Lucy's bag was enough to startled Ms.Bunting.
'Ahhh... At last, another worthy opponent'. The young boy laughed. The skull flew in front of Ms. Bunting thus trapping her which gave Lockwood and Lucy enough time to get to the source.
' What foul creature are you? ' Ms. Bunting said looking quite confused.
' I'd like to give out introductions but we're all a bit of a tight schedule to kill you so yeah. Let's finish this. ' The skull made his attack. Ms. Bunting was a worthy opponent indeed. The two engaged in an intense fight. George was amazed as it was his first time seeing two type three head to head.
'Take cover!' Edwina yelled. Furnitures flew passed her head. Kipps and Holly hold on to the railings. The endless wind circulating the area was as if a tornado waiting to swallow all that come its way. Lucy made a run for it. Not far behind, Lockwood and Gregory followed.
Lucy opened the door and looked around the dusty room. She recalled back the flashback. An alarming thought occured to her. There was no longer a bed in the room and she did not know which floor board Francesca kept the source as the room was now a storage place where old furnitures are kept.
'Breath Luce...hear it'. Lockwood said. Lucy did as instructed. The power within her surge through her veins. Gregory closed the door immediately. Lucy walked three steps ahead and then four more to her left. There was just too many voices in the building.
'Concentrate'. Gregory placed his hand on her shoulder. 'You've come so far...' Lucy can hear faint noises coming from the left side. She reached out her hand and then walked forward. She came to halt and then slowly bent down.
'It's over there by the fire place...' She voiced. Her eyes watered. Lockwood and Gregory wasted no time and moved the furniture. The loose floorboard came to view and Lucy gasped. She hears the fighting between the Skull and Ms. Bunting getting closer. She was proven stronger than ever due to her rage. Lucy took out a silver box from her bag. All of a sudden, the door burst opened and a gush of wind filled the room. Lucy screamed whereas Lockwood and Gregory tumbled on the other side of the room.
'That is mine! ' Ms. Bunting boomed. Gregory covered his ears due to he screech emitted by the ghost.
'Skull!' Lucy yelled. ' Strangle her if you have to'.
'You think I didn't try?' The skull swooshed in and cornered the ghost from harming Lucy.
'You are no match for me boy! I'm filled with vengeance and that girl will die' Ms. Bunting attacked him. The Skull felt her hatred for Lucy and the living beings who made here that way. Its what fuels her powers. He needed to distract Ms. Bunting a bit longer.
'Technically we're both dead so no matter hard you try to fight me, I'll just reappear love'. The skull gave the lady a hard kick on the stomach.
One hard smash was all it took for the source to be taken. Lucy stood up and ran with all her might. Lockwood took out a salt bomb and threw it toward the ghost. Miss Bunting dodged them easily. Lucy took the crowbar on the floor and with one hard smash, the floorboard opened to reveal a magnificent diamond necklace surrounded by cobb webs. It was a thing of beauty itself given by her majesty Queen Charlotte to the newly married Bridgerton Vicountess as a token of their friendship. There it was... The cause of all their misery.
'Dieeee!!!' The ghost of Ms. Bunting flew toward her. Her hand stretch out to capture Lucy from behind.
"Lucy, watch out". Lockwood and Kipps made their way to her. Lucy turned around only to find Gregory shielded her by throwing a can of magnesium flares directly toward the ghost. The sudden blast sent everyone in the room backwards. Lockwood reached out to Lucy.
'Bloody hell" Kipps groaned. He can feel a sharp pain near his hip due to the blast. To his horror, the room is on fire. He saw Lockwood slowly getting up with Lucy carrying the unconscious Gregory.
'We have to get out of here". Said Lucy. 'Skull, where are you?. She called out. The skull was nowhere to be seen and Lucy was afraid that he got caught of the blast.
'Never mind him. He's a ghost. He can appear later. Just save his source'. Lockwood handed Gregory to Kipps. The necklace! Lucy's eyes darted everywhere on the floor when all of a sudden Lockwood placed his hand on her shoulder. He showed to her the iron cloth with something wrapped inside. Lucy cannot hear the source anymore.
"Oh, I love you". Lucy smiled and hugged him.
'Oi, if you fancy being burnt alive together the both of us will move out first' Kipps yelled at them.
'Sorry'. Lucy said trying to hide her embarrassment.
The three of them ran away from the corridor. Kipps commented that if they live through this, he will demand the Viscount to pay them double the amount. Thick smokes starts to cover their vision and Lockwood found it a bit hard to breath. They spotted the others at the foot of the second floor stairs.
'Tell me you didn't set another house on fire'. George cried out in horror.
'Seeing that we have other ghosts emerging other than Ms. Bunting to worry about, I don't see any other solution gonna fix it'. Lockwood added. 'The Bridgertons can build a new one later'.
'Good God. We are so not gonna get paid'. George shook his head.He turned to Kipps who carried Gregory behind his back. 'Shoot, is he dead?'
'We all - will if we don't get out- of here soon'. Kipps said in between coughs.
'Hurry up you lots. This place is burning down fast'. Flo shouted while covering half her face preventing herself from inhaling the smoke. Holly manage to save the Skull's source and placed it inside Lucy's bag.
The ran down the stairs to the first floor. By the time they reached the ground floor, the second floor was already in flames. The smoke grew heavier and they found it harder to breath. All of a sudden a big explosion erupted from the other side of the first floor staircase. It sent Lockwood, Flo and Kipps almost flying mid air. Lucy fell on the floor with a thud. The pain she felt near her right arm was excruciating. What felt like She turned to her right only to see Holly trying to help George up. Flo and Kipps remain unconscious. Where is Lockwood?
'Anthony?' Lucy said with a voice like whisper. She caught when she inhaled the fiery smoke. To her horror, she saw something glittering or more like a phantasm emerging from a distance. The ghost has escaped from the silver box and is now forming itself into Ms. Bunting once more.
'Please, spare my friends and take me instead". Lucy cried out. Holly and the now conscious George almost cannot believe their ears when they heard her say that.
'Are you mad? Don't do it Lucy! Don't Listen to her'. George yelled. They moved towards her only to have Ms. Bunting's ghost flew in front of them. Lucy shouted with all her might to prevent her from ghost touching the two. Ms. Bunting certainly enjoyed this.
'I will have my revenge on you Francesca Bridgerton and I will enjoy every bit of the moment as you watch them all die'. She said. Her hands up in the air ready to inflict pain on all the living souls in the house.
'Well put speech my lady but not quite the kick the dead such as myself can be proud of'. Said a voice appearing from the other side of the window. 'The only demise here and now will be yours'.
Lucy turned toward the window and saw the Skull along with an unexpected person. He had a vintage looking rapier in his hand and on his face lay fasten a similar item that Kipps is wearing. In his hand lay the diamond necklace and what a sight it was for Lucy to see Anthony Bridgerton appearance. The blaze grew ever bigger by the minute and the doors are shut. Ms. Bunting's ghost grew into an alarming frenzy and made her way toward the Viscount. Lucy immediately ran to Lockwood to wake him up.
'No way. The Bridgertons are in the Orpheus Society too?' George shouted. '
'Brother, we had to burn this place. Its the only way to end her'. Edwina explained. Anthony knows but now is not the time to argue about the damage for each minute pass, the flames slowly engulf every inch of the house.
'Get out of here. All of you!' Anthony shouted and gestured for the team to escape. He ran toward Lucy and the ghost. The temperature gets hotter and there was no time to lose.
'Brother no!' Edwina called out. Holly took her arm preventing her from going any further. Anthony used his rapier and rushed toward the ghost with the Skull aiding him from behind.
Having to revive consciousness, Lockwood immediately helped the others to get out. The window was their only exit as the main door was blocked by the newly crashed corridor coming from the top. Before Lucy could pull Lockwood out, he shut the window behind her. She screamed from the top of her lungs and shouted his name. Lockwood's gaze tells her everything that she knows he would do. He ran toward the Viscount to help him.
'LOCKWOOD NO!!!' Lucy screamed. Their friends shouted as well but can only see him and the Viscount fighting the ghost from a distance. George knocked his fist to the window as he watched Lockwood doing something reckless again. The top of the wall came crashing in completely blocking he window. George had to think of a way fast. Both Lockwood and the Viscount are stuck inside. He ran toward the front door. The others followed him.
'Come on. We need to create an exit for them'. George instructed.
'How? The exit is completely blocked'. Lucy said desperately.
'Which is why we need to blow it'. George replied. Kipps and Edwina looked at him as if he has grown two heads. Flo on the other hand agreed and will lend him a hand to do so.
"You're joking!" Holly said. 'What if the blast hits the Viscount and Lockwood?'
'With the right calculations, I can make it work' George added.
"Luckily I always carry a spare of magnesium flares. Stand back everyone, this might get messy". Flo warned them. Everyone stood a bit farther than the doorway.
Lucy felt her heart beating fast as she looked over the door. All she can hope is the safety of both men. The Skull thankfully kept Ms. Bunting away from hurting the Viscount before she can come even nearer. It was hard for Anthony to fight while trying to throw the item into the fire. The smoke and blaze rising around the house made his eyes teary. He saw Lockwood throwing salt bombs onto the ghost but she managed to block them easily.
'You!' Ms. Bunting seethes. 'Do you have a death wish boy?'
'Not me but that one does actually'. The Skull pointed towards Lockwood. 'Bit annoying at first but I suppose we're all used to it by now'.
'What on earth are you doing here? I told you to get out'. Anthony said angrily.
'You may have that goggles on sir but I can see where she strikes next. Get down!' Lockwood said. He pulled the Viscount to the other side before Ms. Bunting can get to her source.
Suddenly there was a loud bang coming from the door. The Viscount and Lockwood fell from the other side. Lucy came in and threw her rapier toward the ghost of Ms. Bunting. Seeing his que, Lockwood snatched the necklace from the floor and threw it into the nearest fire pit. The sound of screaming and unspeakable pain echoed throughout the mansion. Slowly, the essence of what tied Ms. Bunting to this world is slowly being destroyed. The Viscount got up and ran toward Lucy and Lockwood The three of them watched the figure of the vengeful ghost of Ms. bunting fading away.
'Francesca...' The whisper of that name stayed with Lucy for she knew the the horror of tonight opens up more problems for in the coming future.
The wind and earth shakes the foundation of the whole estate. The sound of the building starting to collapse from above made the three of them jumped and it was their que to go. They made it out of the property safely but the house was never the same. Police cars and rescue team can be seen coming from the gateway. Lucy was exhausted but nonetheless relieved that the nightmare is over. She felt a sharp pain coming from her side. She did not realize that there was a small piece of glass protruding. It must have been the blast from before. Strange that it did not hurt before but upon the realization, the pain attacked from all sides of her body. Lucy fell to the ground. That was enough to alert everyone around her.
'No, no, NO! she's bleeding'. Lockwood cursed under his breath. Holly and George came to their side. 'HELP, someone help'.
'Lockwood, stand back. The medic is here Lucy. Hold on'. Holy said with tears in her eyes. The Viscount kneel beside her desperately trying to keep Lucy to stay awake. He held her hand.
'Oh God... Please hold on sister'. Anthony cried out. Lucy's eyes looked at him and then to Lockwood.
'Anthony...' Lucy whisper in silence before succumb into unconscious. Lockwood saw her shut her eyes. He can feel the trauma haunting him back. He cannot lose her again. He lost everyone he loves and Lucy was the only thing that kept him going this far. Tears come running down his face. The Viscount kneel beside her desperately trying to keep Lucy to stay awake. He held her hand.
'Medic! We need medic. There's an agent injured over here'. George yelled to the grown ups.
The rescue team immediately came rushing to their aid. Lucy gritted her teeth and yelled in pain when they tended to her wounds. The Viscount instructed them to bring her immediately to the hospital. Lucy was brought into the ambulance with Lockwood and the Viscount never leaving her side. The others followed the Viscount in the other car.
As Lockwood saw the burning house behind them, he cared for nothing. Not the glory and fame after completing a case but only for the safety of the one he love most. He held her hand tight and prayed for that bright eyes of hers to open again.
