Chapter 1: The Road To Glory Is Endless
Jim's heart thud painfully in his chest as he cycled forward. He glanced back, smiling when he caught sight of Toby struggling to keep up.
Toby was here. Toby was alive. Toby was safe.
The metal trinket in his pocket felt heavier as he moved. He numbly shoved his hand in his pocket, tracing the sharp edges of his amulet with dread.
It wasn't supposed to be here.
He remembered waking with the seemingly endless happiness at the prospect of his plan working only to feel cold gripping fear at the amulet in his pocket. It wasn’t his original. No matter how much he missed it, he knew he’d never be able to get it back. The amulet that Douxie had spent so long fixing and Krel had added Akaridion tech to,seemed to be chasing him, unable to let go. He didn’t know why he had it. Or what it meant for the future but he had an inkling that this was a plan on Merlin’s part and all he could do was hope it wouldn’t cause any more death or destruction like Merlin’s past plans had tended to do.
The jarring sound of the bell rang in his ears as he peddled faster picking up his speed.
"The final bell!" Toby let out a panicked scream moving so he was at par with Jim. "God we're so late our children's children will have detention!"
It was odd to think that moments ago he sat next to Toby's lifeless body screaming with agony, wishing there was a way, any way to change the events that had transpired, only to be cycling next to him only feeling the crushing weight of relief and sadness when he remembered what he had to give up to come here.
He thought of Claire. The sweet kiss they had shared before he had left and the heart wrenching words she had spoken, knowing they'd never experience the same memories again. She had been hopeful. Determined that he would find her again and as Jim cycled in through the large school gates, he promised her once again he would.
It would be better this time. He knew it would.
