Even Evan

Summary:

There once was a boy, who was brave and true,
Who was mighty and strong, and a good boy, too.
His name was Evan, and he came from afar,
And legend says that he was born to be a star.

Notes:

This is a bonus/deleted scene of sorts.

I created the storybook that Buck was named after in this verse, Even Evan, and then I actually sat down and wrote the entire story but I never found the right place for it to go in part 1. So, it's here in full, enjoy the parallels between the book and Buck's life and imagine Maddie reading it to Buck while he's in the hospital.

I've dedicated/gifted this to three of my biggest cheerleaders throughout the process of writing part 1, thank you for your constant support in the form of comments and Instagram messages!

Even Evan

 

There once was a boy, who was brave and true,

Who was mighty and strong, and a good boy, too.

His name was Evan, and he came from afar,

And legend said that he was born to be a star.

 

His planet was gone, reduced to ash,

The darkness overtook it, and it was gone in a flash.

So he came to earth, to find a new family,

To start a new life, free from uncertainty.

 

But what he discovered when his feet touched the ground,

Was a world full of chaos with no help to be found.

“Help us”, people cry “someone save us”, they plead,

“It’s a hero we want, it’s a hero we need”.

 

Evan answered their calls and he raised his head,

“I’ll help you”, he told them, “I can help you”, he said.

He took off his jacket and he rolled up his sleeves,

Then he shot into the air, weaving through the trees.

 

You see, Evan had powers, as did all of his kind,

He was fast, he could fly, he could move things with his mind.

Evan was the hero Earth desperately needed,

And with his help all evil would be defeated.

 

So Evan got to work, and he made things right,

He worked all through the day and all through the night.

He helped the weak, and he captured the bad,

But he was sad and lonely without a mom or a dad.

 

He missed his parents and he missed his brother,

He missed his sister, grandpa, and grandmother.

He had saved the world and made so many friends,

But nothing can replace the love a family extends.

 

Even superheroes need a family, to love and to hold,

Without it, their lives are so dark and so cold.

So he searched high and low to find a new home,

To find a family to love that he could call his own.

 

After years on his own Evan gave up wishing,

He gave up hope of finding what he was missing.

Until one day he saved a man’s life,

A man who has lost his children and wife.

 

“I’m alone”, the man said, “and I’m sad and blue,

I’m alone in this world and that just won’t do.

I don’t want to be here, just let me go”,

But Evan couldn't do it, so he told the man "no".

 

“You have to still fight, you have to stay strong,

You have to keep going, sir, you are wrong.

You can’t give up now, there is so much to see,

You have so much to live for, please, believe me.

 

I know what it’s like to feel so alone,

I know what it’s like to spend years on your own.

I know how much it hurts to lose the ones you love,

To feel as though the light no longer shines from above”.

 

“You are young”, said the man, “but are wise beyond your years,

The things that you say are music to my ears.

I will not give up, I will fight till the end,

With you by my side as my son and my friend”.

 

And that is how Evan once again saved the day,

Not just with his powers, which kept the evil at bay.

But with the strength of his heart which was a gift sent from heaven,

Because everyone deserves to be loved, even Evan.
