Chapter 1: baseball

Chapter Text

He threw the baseball, aiming towards the same spot he had been hitting since 2:38 am, yet this time he didn’t hear it hit the wall. And as he looked up, an odd person, if that’s what you would call it, looked back.

“It’s a little late isn’t it?”, they said while dropping the baseball to the ground yet not breaking eye contact.

“Maybe, I don’t know what time it is, do you?”, he asked innocently, looking up at the small figure in front of him. It was true, though. The last time he looked at the time was when he found his spot, and that could’ve been hours ago.

“Around 4. In the morning, a time where humans should be asleep.”, she said while walking over to sit next to him. The baseball was back in Steven's grasp. He looked at her.

“Yet you’re up, unless you’re not human, then it would be fine.”, he said with no emotion in his voice. He threw the baseball once more. And looked towards the thing who seemed human, yet with tinted skin. It was silent for a while, neither of them knowing what to say. “I’ll take that as a no. Are you an alien? Or one of those gems I've heard so much about.”, no response.

“Why are you out so late? Why aren’t you home under a blanket, asleep. Or out with friends, maybe a party.”, she said as she ignored the question, making Steven assume she was an alien, and just maybe a crystal gem.

“Don’t really have one. Of course there’s vidalias place, and my dads van, but i’m not really up to going to either. And I don’t really have any friends, none that are up right now at least. and no parties to go to. tho I do have the things for a party.”, he threw the ball again.

“You know Vidalia?”, she said while turning her head towards him. Steven nodded. He was a little disappointed that she didn’t care about whether he had a home, or friends, or somewhere to be, yet quickly erased that thought as he realized how attention seeking that seemed.

“Used to model for her. She’s an amazing artist. I wish I could see her again…Hey, what’s your name, anyway?”, she trailed off as she thought of her old friend.

“Steven Universe. Stupid formal first name, and an even stupider last name. Yours?”, he mocked his dad for giving him such a bully worthy name. I mean, really? Choosing your name cuz of a song?

“Amethyst. And too bad about your name. I think it’s cool though, it seems like a unique name, with a backstory from across the multiverse.”, she looked at the stars, then back at him. “About earlier, what did you mean you have stuff for a party? Does it mean you're high or drunk?”, she looked at him while he looked back.

“both…nah i’m messing, it’s just that i’ve got connections, you know?”, he said, trying to avoid the conversation. of course, he was high, he just didn’t want to admit it.

“okay..I’m gonna pick you up, take you to the temple. Have you sleep n stuff.”, she said standing up. He threw the ball again. She waited for him to get up, yet he never did. “Get up, broski”, she had gotten tired of waiting. He stayed still. Finally, she dared to struggle to pick him up, succeeding despite it. He didn't fight it, but didn't seem too happy about it, either.

“Yeah, I found him out by the amusement park, seemed lost, not literally.”, suddenly there were 3 figures staring down at him. He stared up at them, then closed his eyes as quickly as possible, not risking the chance of having to talk to the people, or things.

“We saw you.”, one of the ladies(?) said, monotonously. She was taller than the others, the one who looked the most human.

“Yeah okay. Who are you? And where am I?”, he slowly sat up, taking in his surroundings. He was in a room, on the top floor, only 3 walls, one for the bed, a tv, and a balcony type thing leading outside. The side with no wall was just the rest of the house, it was also a bit like a balcony.

“I’m Garnet, this is Pearl, and you’ve already met amethyst.”, She stayed still during her name, and pointed at the others when she said their name.

“Youre in the human part of the temple! Rose made it for…”,she, Pearl, trailed off, suddenly saddened by the girl she called rose.

"You passed out like halfway here. Made it even harder to carry you. Bet your dad's worried, probably wondering where you are.", Amethyst said looking at him, keeping extra close attention to him.

"maybe, maybe not. Anyway, I have to go, got a shift at the donut shop.", He stood up and left the place as soon as possible.

"Wait!", Garnet called out, yet he kept on walking. It was raining, foggy, too. But it didn't stop him.
